5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, easy to use resource
This book is awesome. I am a professional speaker and trainer and it has helped me immensely. Whenever I sit down to write a new seminar, I refer back to its tips to guide me. The best suggestion in the book is to give the audience a selfish reason to listen to you within the first two minutes. David Peoples also suggests writing your closing first so you know where you are headed. All of the tips are easy to understand and relevant. There is quite a bit of discussion about overhead transparencies and I think most people use Powerpoint presentations these days, but most of those concepts for creating effective slides apply to Powerpoint also.

It also gave me a lot of confidence since I knew I had covered all my bases by using this book to prepare. I highly recommend it for those who speak to groups for a living or make presentations as part of their jobs. I am also going to add it to my website as part of my suggested reading list. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best overall reference for speaking and presentations.
If you could only have one book on speaking and presentations, this should be the one! I've taken numerous speaking and presentations courses, won speaking contests, and I still learned many things from this book. It covers everything from controlling nervousness to why presentation skills are important.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Tool for any Business or even Students.
I have checked my University's library and find that there's very few book about this topic. I find Mr. Peoples' book full of experience and advices. I almost want to rate this book (paper back version) 10 marks, but I found the charts as well as the page layouts are sometimes just demonstrate the down sides of good presentations. Hope the next revised edition can look into this and use some more "updated" cliparts as well. the printing and paper used are also need improve. Brian Wong, Hong Kong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining book on improving presentation skills
There are very few books on presentation skills that cover the subject in such sweeping detail. Supported by excellent research findings and every day commentary, this book provides the novice to experience communicator with valuable presentation techniques, tips and tools. A very good read and an excellent resource! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed...
This book is helping me tremendously at work and in my personal life. I had no idea how weak my language was. I was afraid to say what I thought and ask for what I want. I was always concerned that I would disapoint people out inconvenience them. This book helped me to learn how to communicate effectively while continuing to be a really nice person that gives and gets respect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful!
I love it! It's immediately practical and useful. I learned how to respond to my critical boss, assertively address a backstabber, and most importantly, convey my anger and disappointment without blamin the other person. That lesson alone was worth way more than the price of the book. What a value! I'm using what I learned in this book every day.

4-0 out of 5 stars The basics of good communication skills
Although the title might lead you to think this is a book on creating the correct powerful phrases to improve your writing that is not what the book is about. This is a book about oral communication and how to express yourself in a manner that is non-confrontational and yet lets the other person know what you think. Meryl Runion discusses phrases that kill and cause the recipient to lose respect for you and your message as well as positive phrases to express yourself. She devotes a chapter each to various situations where power phrases could be used. Examples of some of those situations include using them to perfect a connection, to say what you think, to say what you feel, to make powerful requests, to refuse what you don't want, to get people to open up, to apologize without groveling, to respond to unkind criticism, to handle angry persons, to express anger, to handle disagreements, and to address issues. "How to Use Power Phrases" is a book on verbal communication and responding appropriately to various situations and is a recommended read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
Meryl Runion has crafted an excellent resource that has relevance for every person who picks it up. She has a gift for finding the rights words for all those difficult, touchy or uncomforatable situations we find ourselevs in on a dialy basis. The book shows you how to change your approach to actually accomplish your goal - not to make thing worse. She points out that we are pre-programmed to utter responses that can be confrontational, defensive and often counterproductive. Best yet, she illustrates actual situations and shows the right and wrong things to say to make the point and get results. It's written in a very conversational tone and is remarkably inexpensive. This is a great book to by your bedside and read a few chapters each night. Use a highlighter! It's really great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and highly recommended!
For anyone who has ever searched for words, or came up with the "right" thing to say fifteen minutes too late, this book is for you. The author, Meryl Runion, gives excellent advice that can be used with a variety of situations. I have tried the "Power Phrases" and they work! It is amazing what kind of results you can get when you know how to get your point across and our confident in your ability to communicate. That is exactly what this book teaches you. I think the book is particularly important for anyone who wants to learn how to be more effective and assertive. This book promises what it delivers - that you'll learn how to say what you mean, mean what you say, and get what you want - and then some. Highly recommended reading! The book would also make a wonderful and highly useful gift. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic and helpfull
Don't expect any grand revelations here but do expect some good advice. I refer to the section on presentations and visual aids all the time when I have to give a talk at work. I think the book could use a little stepping up in the pace of the information. It was a litte bit basic for me. Book Description

"You'll not only break the ice, you'll melt it away with your new skills." -- Larry King

"The lost art of verbal communication may be revitalized by Leil Lowndes." -- Harvey McKay, author of “How to Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive”

What is that magic quality makes some people instantly loved and respected?Everyone wants to be their friend (or, if single, their lover!) In business, they rise swiftly to the top of the corporate ladder. What is their "Midas touch?"

What it boils down to is a more skillful way of dealing with people.

The author has spent her career teaching people how to communicate for success. In her book How to Talk to Anyone (Contemporary Books, October 2003) Lowndes offers 92 easy and effective sure-fire success techniques-- she takes the reader from first meeting all the way up to sophisticated techniques used by the big winners in life. In this information-packed book you’ll find:

  • 9 ways to make a dynamite first impression
  • 14 ways to master small talk, "big talk," and body language
  • 14 ways to walk and talk like a VIP or celebrity
  • 6 ways to sound like an insider in any crowd
  • 7 ways to establish deep subliminal rapport with anyone
  • 9 ways to feed someone's ego (and know when NOT to!)
  • 11 ways to make your phone a powerful communications tool
  • 15 ways to work a party like a politician works a room
  • 7 ways to talk with tigers and not get eaten alive

In her trademark entertaining and straight-shooting style, Leil gives the techniques catchy names so you'll remember them when you really need them, including: "Rubberneck the Room," "Be a Copyclass," "Come Hither Hands," “Bare Their Hot Button,” “The Great Scorecard in the Sky," and "Play the Tombstone Game,” for big success in your social life, romance, and business.

How to Talk to Anyone, which is an update of her popular book, Talking the Winner's Way (see the 5-star reviews of the latter)is based on solid research about techniques that work!

By the way, don't confuse How to Talk to Anyone with one of Leil's previous books, How to Talk to Anybody About Anything. This one is completely different!

For guys this book is ideal way to learm more techniques when picking up and talking with women.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leil is # 1..... I love this book
Leil's book has changed my life!

I'm so glad I stumbled across this book. "How to Talk to Anyone" is filled with wonderful gems of knowledge. And, as someone who works in pharmaceutical clinical research, I appreciate how she backs up her techniques with research studies and statistics (this book is based on science, not fluff!). Leil's witty and straight-forward writing style truly makes her book come to life. My friends and I often go to the park and read her pearls of wisdom out loud...her tell-it-like-it-is New York attitude is so refreshing! I've read this book several times- each time serves as a nice refresher course. It's quite fun to try out her tips, and to see the amazing response that they have (in social settings, at work, with family members, etc). Many people have commented on how my communication skills have improved (and all I did was follow Leil's simple rules). I've seen that Leil's courses (through Verbal Advantage cost $2000+), so to only pay around $15-20 for this book is a total bargain. I also recommend her other books "How to Be a People Magnet" and "Updating".

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly simple and instantly effective -a truly great book
After reading just the first chapter of "How to Talk to Anyone," I was astounded!! I have been researching this field (I am 24 years old, and a developmental trainer) for almost 7 years and I have never seen, heard or read such stuff. Leil's technique about the "Flooding Smile" is in itself worth the price of the whole book, many times over. I feel a sense of excitement on having discovered her material that I felt when I first read about NLP - which was a life-changing experience for me. Really, Leil's book is AWESOME!! and if I could, I would shout it out and jump up and down and tell everyone about it in the voice of a kid who just found out where his favorite toy was all this while, after all! I can't wait to start living these techniques and scream these techniques out in my training sessions.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book really works!!!
I have developed a fascination with personal relationships and want to become a master communicator and master friend to others. I want to learn how to be totally charismatic and attract people to me like a magnet. I want to learn how I can get others to like me, because they can sense and know I like them by focusing on THEM, not me. I want to learn special words and grammar and what to say to others for them to feel attracted to me, even on a subconscious level.

And now Leil Lowndes has told me exactly how to do it. Her book is FANTASTIC. I've started using some of her techniques and notice how people are responding to me more positively already. Now I'm going to order all her books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth It
You will enjoy this book. I bought it on clearance at a book store and hoped it would be worth it for the plane ride. It has proved to be fantastic. I have never prided myself on being good at small talk or at introductions, but Lowndes gives you numerous practical tips which can be easily and immediately applied. Although many of these tactics are specifically meant for introductions and first impressions, they can also be used for daily contact with acquaintances and friends as well. (It also feels good to come across some of the tricks and know that you already have been doing that). Unless you live in a cave, you're conversations with others will be more valuable to you than money you use to get this book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Security Officers must have book
Once again Dr. Kovacich has excelled. He has produced an updated version of already 'must have' book for any information security officer. It is the sort of book that is useful to both the experienced information security officer and to the person who is new to the area. The book is written in a format that makes it very readable and also that you can easily find that piece of information that you can remember seeing but can't exactly recall where..

I wish that he had been writing this type of book when I first started out in the Infosec field. If you only buy one information security book - make sure it is this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practitioner's perspective
Dr. Kovacich has updated one of the classic management works for the people who are responsible for the overal design, development and delivery of a comprehensive, enterprise-wide protection program. There are lots of books out there that will assist those who have technical responsibilities for security in doing a better job. There are very few that help develop the manager's who must harmonize people, processes and technology to address the rapidly increasing range of risks that can impact organizations that are all becoming ever more dependent on information technology to accomplish their objectives. If you are now or aspire to be a manager or director of information security for an organization this is an essential guidebook that will advise and assist you in meeting the challenges inherent in that role.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guidebook for Information Security Professionals
Another excellent book from a knowledgeable authority. Insightful and well written, Dr. Kovacich provides some excellent advice for the ISSO and anyone involved in Information Security. The practical approach to implementing and managing an effective Information Security (INFOSEC) program is applicable to both US private sector and governmental organizations. This book is a must read for both the novice and seasoned professional and anyone interested in Information Security. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun book to read... and you'll learn something, too!
All those in advertising and in business can benefit from the kind of inspiration Roy Williams delivers in "Secret Formulas". The advertising media is so often held hostage for instant success for the ad dollars spent, as if ten magic words all spoken together will instantly remove a business from bankruptcy. Williams gives the reader a real-world view of what businesses should expect from their advertising, and gives several blueprints for success. Be prepared, however; there's no magic potion, no 'eye of newt' that, when added, will turn your business around. It's hard work to create good marketing and advertising, but Williams takes on the complexities of advertising in a way that offers a bounty of food for thought. Those in media sales, especially Radio, ought to have this stuff down cold if they truly want to jet-propel their careers-- and help their clients succeed beyond their wildest dreams. Our Radio clients will all receive a copy of this book for Christmas.

(P.S. I've had the privelege of meeting and talking at length with the author. He's as genuine as they come.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Brand Dominance 101!
In a conversation with a retailer discussing the buying habits of the public, he told me, "I follow Roy Williams." The name sounded somewhat familiar. The merchant then said, "want to read his book; I have it in the back?" As soon as I saw the book, I remembered that I had already read "The Wizard of Ads."

Roy H. Williams takes advertising and turns it upside down, right-side up, and inside out. You see what works, what doesn't, and how to walk the narrow path that gives you the best return on your advertising investment dollars.

Most important, Bard Press and Williams make it a great read, good-looking book with substantial pages, big print, no extra verbiage, lots of white space, and new and exciting concepts:

1. Huebner Fifth Rule of Mountaineering: Never look where you don't want to go. 2. Six Tugs of War 3. Calculating your APE 4. Hamp Baker's advertising genius 5. Nitroglycerin 6. The Secret Path to Miraculous Ads 7. Find out the real story of how we got our Statue of Liberty 8. The Buying Public is Your Dog 9. The Three Sacred Cows of Advertising

Williams' concepts are intelligent: better to focus your advertising to reach 10% of your market 100% than throw money at 100% of your market to reach 10%.

Advertising is a complicated art and Williams boils the concepts down to make them user-friendly for you. What more could you want to make you curious about his wisdom?

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful words from the Wizard!
Roy Williams and his series of books were introduced to me by a radio station that I advertize with. The information contained within these pages have been nothing less that inspirational! I have never been in a better position to assist my dealers in making marketing decisions and develop local ads. I can't wait for the day that I can afford to visit the Wizard Acadamy and learn as much as I can!

5-0 out of 5 stars The formula works!!!
What is branding? How do people really remember you? How do you build your brand? This book gets back to the basics. There really is a magical formula. For you. For your company.

I bought this book because it was different. It disagreed with everything I had previously learned. This book can change the way you think. Forever. My mind turns in a completely new direction. Seeing things from a complete new angle. How can anybody pass up such an opportunity?

5-0 out of 5 stars A look not just at what works, but why it works
Some people like those straight forward 12-steps to business success books. I happen to be one of them. They are very focused and industry specific. But what those books lack is a deeper look at why people make the decisions they do.

This book doesn't just talk about what works, it talks about why it works.

In Secret Formulas, Roy Williams deconstructs successful businesses, people, and advertising. Sure, some people may say "what does brain function have to do with advertising"? Here's the thing....EVERYTHING has to do with advertising....how people think, how they make decisions, how their memory works, what their personality type is. History, art, poetry....it's all a part of understanding what makes people tick, what makes them successful.

Want to really be a successful advertiser? Want to build a succesful business? You need to know more than 12 steps. Take a deeper look. Study different people in different industries. These secrets aren't new. They're proven to work. Apply them to your life and business. It's made a huge difference in mine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Tons of Great Information
This book is written for those who are looking to right to the bottom line, something a busy manager can appreciate. It has offered me several tips on how to make a great presentation. The only problem I have with the book is that there are quite a lot of typos which can detract from its credibility. Other than that the information is right on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of both worlds
Presentation Skills for Managers by Jennifer and Mike Rotondo is the ideal book for busy presenters who need a thorough grounding in the art and science of presentation skills. The book is small but very complete, covering everything from planning to execution. Checklists and reviews at the end of each chapter keep you focused and organized.

I was very impressed with the wisdom of the two authors. This book doesn't gloss over its topic but rather provides very important information in a readable format. It starts by explaining how you should prepare from the outset and then explains the process of converting your research and outline into a PowerPoint presentation.

While this book does not cover PowerPoint in detail, it does explain the necessary steps for using PowerPoint to create a presentation. This combination of theory and practice is unique and very useful because the actual process involves both the conceptualization of the presentation's structure and the execution in PowerPoint. (Microsoft PowerPoint owns about 90% of the market for presentation software.) Clear steps for designing a presentation in terms of layout, consistency, and color guide you through the creation process.

Finally, Presentation Skills for Manager explains in detail how to deliver your great presentation, including a guide to dealing with questions, your own nervousness, technical disasters, and much more. After you read this book once, you'll refer to it again and again, whenever you need to create and deliver an important presentation. And hey, aren't all your presentations important?

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide for presenters at any level
You can tell Rotondo really knows what she is talking
about. This book is a great guide on how to get your
point across effectively. She mixes good knowledge on
various items from PowerPoint design, room set-up,
effective delivery tips, and content structuring. I
have attended seminars before on how to give good
presentations, but they just focused on public
speaking. This book covers everything from the
creation process all the way to the 'Question &
Answer' session at the end of a presentation. The easy
layout of every chapter with icons and helpful hints
ensures that the reading is short and concise. I have
found this is a great "go-to" book whenever I start a
new presentation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 101 Best... has great tips in the back!
I bought this book based on the reivews in this site, and it is a really good one. The resumes have a wide variety of examples and are very high-powered/professional. But to my surpirse, there are 200 quick and lean job search tips in the back, and they're great. They helped out on interviewing, writing resumes and letters, working with headhunters and interviewing. This is a great value if you need a job search book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Resumes that match candidate skills with employer's needs
This book is very good for several reasons: It gives the best variety of resumes (the best from the Professional Association of Resume Writers, over 1000 members), just enough how-to without overkill and 200 tips bulleted off in the back that are very information rich (see back cover copy). The resumes focus on positioning the candidate's skills and matching them to the employer needs. The book also includes sample cover letters that are more action-oriented than the typical ones I saw in other books. I found several resumes that I could emulate and use, particularly those on pages 56 and 118.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Value
I found the book to be very helpful. It had some useful tips and sample resumes and cover letters. One of the best books of its type I've ever seen

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring and a waste of time!
I bought this book based on all of the favorable review's and was greatly disappointed. As a recent college graduate in the humanities, I found it to be a big waste of time and money! If you are not interested in finding a job, buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Pick

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend this book!
This book is phenomenal and the best I have read on the subject. Very few people have the experience Tim does, as both a psychologist and successful businessman, so he has great credibility. His system/process makes dealing with conflict a breeze. And I love his humor. I feel connected with him and trust his advice. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
A must read for anyone who tends to avoid conflict for the sake of keeping the peace. Dr. Ursiny meshes practical steps to overcome fear of conflict with engaging stories, while encouraging the reader to be true to self. I have recommended this book to clients and it is being used by small group discussion leaders with great results.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Tool
The Coward's Guide to Conflict is a great tool for every day life in the workplace and at home. Utilizing everyday people and situations Dr. Ursiny explains why we behave in the manner that we do and then gives tools to help change those behaviors to lead to more positive results and a better understanding of ourselves and others. It takes the fear out of conflict. It should be in every household and office.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on Point!
Ursiny uses examples to illustrate his points so well - one example looked like it came right out of my work environment - as if he was a fly on the wall! No one likes to face conflict and we are all pretty good at avoidance. This book helps one understand conflict and, most inmportantly, how to face and resolve it in an honest, respectful and EFFECTIVE way. FIVE STARS!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete guide for the non-confrontational
There's nothing Dr. Ursiny has left out of this easy to read and follow book. Since more than 80% of all people are non-confrontational this guide helps everyone understand others and prepares them for any difficult conversation. As a business coach I have used and recommended the book to all of my clients who struggle with getting their point across and being heard in a contentious/confrontational situation.
The book is complete and is a guide deserving to be utilized by everyone.

This text is appropriate for those courses with an emphasis on e-commerce and the Internet, as well as short courses or MBA/IS courses that want a modern approach. Networking has changed dramatically over the past ten years. Most texts have focused on network layers and their concepts and then on how the different technologies are implemented; however with the number of viable technologies shrinking, it makes less sense to focus on concepts first and technologies second. 2-0 out of 5 stars In Need of Editing
A very technical, academic-style text, apparently thrown together hastily with little concern for clarity. Many chapters are riddled with typographical errors, some of which (particularly in the diagrams) outright mislead the student.

As a student, reading this book regularly put me to sleep, but that may say as much about my interest in the material as it does about the author's presentation of it. Or perhaps the author just likes putting people to sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing for a beginner
I'm a Crystal Reports beginner. This book is not useful at all. You can easily create a simple report by following the steps described in first two chapters. However, after that, I was totally lost. The book describes a lot of things available in Crystal Reports without following samples. There are samples available for each chapter on the web. However, there was no connection between the samples and the book. I don't how the sample reports were produced and I just couldn't learn how to create reports by just reading the book. I'm very disappointed at the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing for the Non-Beginner
Here are the good points:
. the examples do follow through many of the features of Crystal Reports 9

Here are the bad points:
. there is a lot of unnecessary verbiage which pads out the size of the book; the verbiage is intended to make the text friendly, but for someone trying to determine how a feature works, it is highly obstructive and irritating
. the typeface in which the book is set is quite difficult to read
. the examples do not pass on understanding of the principles of each feature; the attempt to grasp a general concept gets drowned in the details
. many features (too numerous to mention) are glossed-over, including advanced features needed by the enterprise programmer
. the index includes references which are totally useless (e.g. McLuhan, Marshall who has absolutely nothing to do with the topic) and lacks completely necessary references
. while not a "1,200 page tome" (see another review) it is a 639 page tome

While the title includes the word "Master", this book is really for the programming beginner. For example, veterans do not need another tedious review of object-oriented programming, or SQL, or Basic language syntax, and so on. Seeing as there are entire libraries on these topics, the reviews are necessarily inadequate anyhow.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to learn Crystal Reports 9 and this was excellent
Already a SQL, VB, and .NET programmer, I wanted o add CR to the repetoire. I picked this book up from Amazon and was pleasantly surprised with the depth and descriptions. If you're looking for a book that gives you the low down on CR, pick this one up.

I also travel as a consultant often and this book is not a 1,200 page tome either (which I appreciate).

Enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars has to be the worst
This has to be the worst title I have picked up in a while. The author rambles on and on and on about things that have nothing to do with Crystal Reports. Endless filler material here with sample code that looks like it came straight from the Crystal web site. In terms of report design and use, Crystal: The Complete Reference (Peck) is a much better book and I wish I could swap this one for it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best & Comprehensive
This is one of the best and most content rich of all the Crystal Reports books.
Contains everything from the most basic usage to the more complex reports, formulas, SQL and programming issues.
If you are an instructor and need a book to use teaching CR this is the book for you. ... Read more
