5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding and Facilitating Adult Learning
A thoroughly researched and extensively documented book which efficiently outlines 20 years of studies on adult learning. Effective adulte learning practices are explained in from six categories, voluntary engagement, respect among participants, collaboration and negaotiation of needs, relective praxis, critical appreciation of diversity, and student empowerment of self improvement. Aside from the institutional mode of learning, external authority, set objectives, set teaching roles, prescribed evaluation, adult learning seeks to empower self directed learners with critical thinking modes. This latter kind of learning is not without risk. The risks of dillusion, professional incompetence, and the perils of playing close to a kind of classroom therapy. Nonetheless, adult students bring a wealth of experience (good and bad), maturity, problem posing, problem solving, and task focus to adult learning. Finally, adult learning will invariably be restricted by institutional contexts, evalution criteria, and contextual business norms. ... Read more

The ongoing education and training of adults has become a necessity in many professional areas. Yet the staff who set up and administer these programs often lack skills for the very task that is so critical to the success of their efforts--the planning of the programs themselves.

This popular guide contains information on every area of program planning for adult learners, from understanding the purpose of educational programs to obtaining suitable facilities.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for all the details
If you are looking for a book to teach you how to teach, this ain't it. But if you are looking for something comprehensive that discusses all the many aspects one must consider to plan and execute a quality program, this is a gem. If you do much sponsoring of programs and events, you know it is the little things that can ruin your day: the air conditioner is not working, you did not adequately budget for the materials needed, you did not anticipate the needs of the participants, etc. This helps prevent geting blindsided. I refer to this frequently when preparing workshops and programs, and recommend it to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Adult Education Coordinators
This book covers all the aspects of adult education program planning. Though, most of the information seems common sense, it is this straight-forward writing that makes this book such a fantastic reference. I continually refer back to the book when developing my adult ed programs to make sure I'm not missing anything. The information covered in each chapter is a great overview and provides insight to program development. I recommend for more specific information on a particular chapter to seek out other resources that go more in depth. Overall, it is a great guide to successful program planning.

1-0 out of 5 stars Has very limited value

5-0 out of 5 stars Fosters Community Among Educators And Their Students!
Growing numbers of K-12 schools, colleges, universities, and businesses have begun offering online instruction, taking advantage of computer and Internet technologies to deliver instruction once confined to the realm of physical classrooms. Indeed, the Internet, so-to-speak, has become a virtual classroom and community where all kinds of instruction can take place - anytime day or night, anywhere around the world.

Lessons from the Cyberspace Classroom offers readers a broad treatment of the issues involved in planning, creating, and carrying out distance education via the Internet. In a concise manner the book introduces the issues, raises many serious questions, and provides many solutions to help meet the educational goals of instructors, their learning institutions, and their students.

The real beauty of the book lies in its effort to motivate instructors and learning institutions to think through the issues for themselves - to evaluate the unique circumstances they face and to encourage them to seek more effective ways of accomplishing their goals. Because each virtual learning experience will be unique, a number of important considerations should be weighed to determine course structure, content, and delivery, such as:

What technologies should be used?
Who will create the course?
Who will own the course material(s)?
How will the course be delivered?
How will assignments, projects, and exams be administered?
How will instructors and students be prepared?
How will student participation be controlled?
How will student behavior be controlled?

Lessons from the Cyberspace Classroom does a superb job of fostering community among educators and their students. The authors express the importance of creating learning communities were serious dialogue takes place - dialogue that enhances the learning process and leads to achieving specific educational goals. This book is must reading for online educational course development.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Reality Check for Distance Learning
If "the devil is in the details" of online learning, Paloff and Pratt have done an excellent job exploring the promise and pitfalls of distance learning programs. Anyone in the process of designing online courses or programs in higher education should read both this book and their earlier book before they launch a new course or program. Personally, this book helped me avoid several mistakes I otherwise would have made in my first distance learning adventure.

The book looks at both teacher and administrator perpsectives, and understands that both insitutional support and instructor skill are key elements for success. While the authors are genuine advocates for the medium, they understand that interactivity does not equal mouse clicks, and that building learning communities takes skill, practice, and structures. The book is full of very helpful examples, learning constructs, and realistic assessments of distance learning successes and failures. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Theory Light
I applaud the authors' attempt to provide an accessible, easy to understand synthesis of student development theory, but they have sacrificed depth for breadth and left the reader with a text that, like over-processed food, provides some nutrition but ultimately fails to satisfy. The book is below the level of most master's degree students and practitioners in student affairs, though it might provide a useful introduction to theory for undergraduates or a useful reference book for administrators who don't have time to read original sources.

Book Description

1999 Critics' Choice Selection of the American Educational Studies Association

In this guide to planning, conducting, and evaluating lively discussions, authors Stephen Brookfield and Stephen Preskill offer a variety ofpractical ideas, tools, and techniques for creating democratic classrooms. They suggest exercises to get discussion started, strategies for maintaining its momentum, ways to elicit a diversity of views and voices, ideas for creative groupings and formats, and processes to encourage student participation. In exploring the role of the teacher in discussion, they address the tensions and possibilities arising from ethnic, cultural, social class, and gAnder differences. Throughout the book, the authors emphasize how discussion fosters democratic participation and enhances learning. Additionally, they review how to balance the voices of students and teachers, while still preserving the moral, political, and pedagogic integrity of discussion.

From the early stages of preparing students to participate in discussion to the final stages of evaluating its meaning and effects, the authors provide a comprehensive guide to realizing the promises--and avoiding the pitfalls--of this way of teaching. Each chapter contains numerous techniques, suggestions, and applications that can be adapted to a wide range of discussion settings. Sample exercises and formats are provided throughout, including case studies of successful practices. Discussion as a Way of Teaching is an accessible, practical resource for teachers, trainers, faculty, administrators, professional developers, facilitators, and other educational leaders. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for new teachers
I have been teaching for 10 years and have had lots of opportunity to put these techniques into practice. Many of the times discussions did not go well -- and the book describes why. Many times the discussions went well -- and the book describes why. In short, the book reflects the good and bad experiences I have had and so seems true to my experience. I wish I had a book of this sort when I was first starting out. Since discussion is encouraged today as it enables more action in class, but it can be very daunting encouraging students to get started and keep a discussion productive, fair, and equally engaging for all students. So a guide like this can be a great help. Some of the suggestions are very practical and easy to use and make a big difference in the class.

3-0 out of 5 stars I am not a teacher
I am not a teacher, so I read this book looking for ways to better facilitate discussions/dialogues in democratic settings outside of the classroom. There are so many good ideas. My favorite is the Circle of Voices- 5 people stand in a circle, each speaking uninterrupted for 3 minutes. When you go back to the full group, you are only supposed to report the ideas of the others who were in your circle, so that everyone's opinion is heard, even if they are not a forceful speaker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book!
I've been teaching at the college level for over ten years, and I'm always searching for new ideas to use in the classroom. When I ordered this book, I wasn't sure what to expect since the reviews were mixed; however, I was very pleased with this book.

The authors give some really useful and interesting ideas of different techniques and strategies that can be used to promote insightful, prolonged discussions. While I've run across some of the authors' suggestions before (such as using buzz groups or the jigsaw method), most of the suggestions were new and I can certainly see myself using most of the techniques in the classroom in the coming weeks. It is an expensive book, but worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good ideas I could use
I've used discussion a lot over the years and often been frustrated by my students who seemed to be bored with it so I'm always on the look out for something that would help me.I had to read this book for a course I took and so was forced to check it out and I'd say it definitely helped.I liked that it was full of techniques and things for me to try and that it didn't just go into what to do in class but also spoke about how to set up discussions, get students ready for them etc.I can see now that a lot of what I tried before didn't work because my students weren't really ready for them.I'd say I've used about 50 % of the things I read about (some didn't really transfer for my classes) and mostly they worked pretty well. Along with getting students ready for discussion I liked the bits on making sure everyone has a chance to speak and on different types of questioning. The price is a bit high but if you're a teacher who uses discussion a lot and hasn't checked this out it's really worth looking at.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read
For people who want to become more effective in using discussion in teaching, especially with adults, this book is an excellent choice. It explains clearly and honestly the value and the limits of using discussion in teaching. From the opening chapter, in which dispositions of discussion are introduced, to chapters on preparing for discussion, sparking discussion, and keeping discussion going, the book remains engaging, practical, and genuinely helpful to those of us striving to become better facilitators of discussion. ... Book Description

The Power of Guidance: Teaching Social-Emotional Skills In the Early Childhood Classroom gives readers valuable insight into using guidance in the early childhood setting through a collection of popular writings on this timely topic. Taking into consideration the social and emotional development in young children, the book examines such areas as understanding why children behave the way they do and how to use the guidance approach to succeed in teaching acceptable social behaviors. The material discusses the differences between such important concepts as patience and understanding and between misbehavior and mistaken behavior. These concepts provide insight into the importance of developing an encouraging classroom and how that leads to non-punitive strategies for managing the classroom setting. The popular guidance concept of this book attracted the attention of the NAEYC, which has made it a comprehensive member benefit for 2003. Benefits:• Patience and understanding are differentiated, which is the key to using guidance. • Misbehavior and mistaken behavior are differentiated, helping teachers understand children’s behavior. • Discipline versus guidance is discussed, giving teachers a new vocabulary for actions many already use. • Management strategies for an encouraging classroom give teachers non-punitive strategies for classroom management. • Intervention strategies with boys address commonly asked questions. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great review
I haven't taken the test yet; however, I have already received my bachelor's degree in psychology. This book sums up the four years of psych. classes I took. It does miss some things, but it would be impossible to cover everything you learn in college. It is a great review nonetheless. I would not recommend it for anyone who has not already had all of the main subjects in psychology. It is simply a review, not a learning tool. There are mini tests after each section, which are nice. It is a lot of reading, so be prepared to start studying a couple of months before the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE
After reading all the amazon reviews of psych GRE books I decided on two: Kaplan and Princeton Review. Although I had plenty of time to study (over 3 months), I focused 90% of my time studying Princeton Review, mainly because of its less intimidating size. BIG MISTAKE. By the time I got to read through Kaplan, I realized just how much important material I had missed. However, by then it was too late to read through the whole book, as the test was only a couple weeks week away. Although I had memorized theorists and definitions galore from Princeton Review, I did not do well on the test. Practice GREs scored me in the 99th percentile, so of course I thought I was on the right track. Wrong! I only scored a 600 on the exam and was truly disappointed. I was even more disappointed when I realized everything I needed to do well on the exam was right in front of me with Kaplan. In fact, if I had not studied at least some of Kaplan, I don't think I would have even hit 600! All the material that I did go over from Kaplan was on the test, while the massive definitions and theorists Princeton Review provided did nothing to help me answer the more in-depth type of questions that the GRE calls for. Kaplan is a great book because it actually goes into great detail about the material you need to know! I was extremely disappointed in Princeton Review and in myself for wasting my time. If I take the exam again I will study this book throughly and stay far, far away from Princeton Review. Not only is this book extremely thorough and allows for a very clear understanding of the material...it is actually very interesting to read! Why memorize 2-sentence blurbs that don't really make sense and doesn't really teach you anything, when you can actually LEARN and UNDERSTAND the material. The size might be a little nerve-wracking, but if you're really invested in doing well on this exam I highly suggest this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars so far so good
I haven't taken the test, yet, so I can't say for sure how applicable this book is to the actual test, but I am finding the Kaplan to be very well written. It appears to go into the right level of depth without overwhelming you. I find the examples very helpful.

I also have the ARCO (difficult to find as it is out of print) which came highly recommended. The Arco book is more concise than Kaplan (about half the pages), but for unfamiliar material it feels like a memorization fest. The Arco, however, may be more on track with what is actually tested by the GRE (or so I hear). So the combination of the two books is what I hope works.

I have leafed through the Princeton Review, and it seems even more concise than the Arco. Doesn't work for me, but I don't have a full major in Psychology. If this is all just review for you, PR might be fine.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Stuff, Lots of Errors
I am disappointed at the amount of errors in the text and in figures here. If I didn't have a basic understanding of most of this, I would be incredibly frustrated. Proper names are misspelled, somehow the word "Conservation" got switched to "conversation," and figures, meant to teach are out and out wrong. I didn't look at the Princeton book, but if I had the time, I would.

4-0 out of 5 stars Depth: yes. Width: go w/ the Princeton Review
The practice tests are nice: Two full length ones, and scattered mini tests, for sections.(With explanations.) ... Read more
