1-0 out of 5 stars The worst among my phuchases
There are no explanations at all on the answers. The answers are only A.B.C.etc. They did not tell you "why". Besides, the CD sound quality is so bad, and you can not repeat the specific questions you want to listen. You have to repeat the whole section from the beginning, and it wasts my time.

    It can't even compare to Delta's Key to TOEFL(CD-ROM)(5*) and Barron's TOEFL 10th Edition(4*),

    Book Description

What do teachers need to know in order to teach well?  How important is the depth and quality of teachers' content knowledge as a critical aspect of their ability to teach?  How can teachers best be educated, and how can we assess their accomplishments as teachers? In what ways is the professional preparation of teachers comparable to the preparation of physicians and other members of learned professions?  What kinds of educational research can provide deeper understanding of teaching, learning, and the reform of education? These are just some of the many questions answered in this landmark collection of Lee Shulman's best work. A pioneer in the field of teaching and teacher research, Shulman's work and thinking have long influenced teachers and researchers. But while Shulman is one of the most widely cited scholars in education, his writings have been scattered among a variety of books and journals—until now.

The Wisdom of Practice at last makes Shulman's major works on K-12 education and teacher education available in one volume. His interests in teaching of all sorts—in K-12 schools, in teacher education, in graduate programs for educational researchers, in liberal education—have been diverse. The essays included touch on such wide-ranging topics as the psychology of school subjects, medical problem solving, teacher knowledge, performance assessment, teaching in higher education, the scholarship of teaching and learning, the characteristics and pedagogies of the professions, the role of cases in professional education and research, and the character of relevant and rigorous educational research. ... I have been using this book as a back up in teaching the basics. They are clearly presented and easy to grasp. Each chapter presents a concept with self tests to make sure you understand before you go on the the next idea. It is a great suppliment to our textbook and a good review for the GED test. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A first step guide to getting to know the TEA exam
This exam aid is a definite help if you are going to take the TEA exam. Though, as the previous reviewer said, the math is fairly simple as compared to the actual exam. It's a good start but it is highly advised that the reader look into more complex linear equations. This book is a good start for anyone who doesn't know any background on any of the Treasury Bureau's.

2-0 out of 5 stars It gives an idea
This study guide gives an idea of the type of questions that are on the TEA exam, but it does not give an accurate picture of the difficulty of the questions on the exam. This study guide makes you think that you are ready for the exam when you are not. I recommend getting ARCO's Special Agent Deputy U.S. Marshall study guide.

2-0 out of 5 stars Gives you a start
This book is to simple for the real TEA exam. If you are going to get a book to study get the ARCO Special Agent book. The questions in the ARCO book are more complex and do a better job of preparing you for the test. I just got done taking the test, and if I hadn't had the ARCO book I most probably would have failed the test. I gave it 2 stars because it does give you an idea and a start, but please don't waste your time with this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't rely on this book if you want to pass the TEA exam!
I just wish I had read all these reviews before purchasing this book. I just took the TEA and am in shock. This book in no way prepares you for the math and even the verbal reasoning doesn't match up to what is actually on the TEA exam. I hate to admit this, but because of relying on this study guide alone, I have probably blown my one and only chance to become an ATF Agent. Don't waste your time with this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money
If you plan on spending loads of money for airfare and a hotel in order to get to the TEA test location, save some of the money by not buying this book. The practice exams were fairly simple and the math section was completely unrealistic compared to the actual test. I am by no means a math wizard, but this book portrayed the math section as one of mostly very basic math. The actual test is 10x harder! Ill be buying ARCO's guide (US Marshal test book) for the next time. Several people told me after the exam Arco's math section closely resembled the actual test. ... Read more

"This is an exceptional book—well-researched, highly practical and very in touch with the everyday needs of today’s teacher. In the glut of teaching books out on the market, this one really stands out."
    Eric Jensen
Author of Teaching With the Brain in Mind

"The reader-friendly flow of this book is in the top 1% of all similar texts that I have read. It provides solid background information with appropriate vignettes to facilitate the personalization of the material—it was a delight to read!"
Shawn Van Etten, Ph.D., Director of Institutional Research

Practical strategies to integrate brain-based learning into your classroom as easily as clicking your heels!

Through the clever analogy of The Wizard of Oz, Marilee Sprenger provides invaluable information about cognitive research and shares simple tactics for implementing these ideas in the classroom. Learn proven tools for coping with "the Lion’s stress, the Tin Woodsman’s need for emotional intelligence, and the Scarecrow’s desire for higher level thinking."

This user-friendly guide effectively discusses expert findings about brain growth, structure, and functions to help teachers and administrators foster a love of learning in all students. By creating an enriched, brain-compatible environment as outlined in this book, educators can effectively counter such existing negative influences as stress, sleep deprivation, poor nutrition, and a genetic predisposition to disorders in order to cultivate successful lifelong learning.

    Key features include:

    • Straightforward discussion about memory pathways, learning styles, and multiple intelligences
    • Extensive examples from real school situations where brain research has been applied
    • Tactics for immediately putting brain-based information to work in the classroom
    • Concrete techniques for using music, teams, rapport building, and brain-state changes to stimulate student learning

    About the Author:

Marilee Sprenger has translated and applied brain-based research for the past thirteen years, and specializes in staff development training. As a classroom teacher, educational consultant, and adjunct professor at Aurora University, Sprenger has successfully integrated the most current brain research into all levels of education. She is a frequent speaker at national and state conferences and offers seminars internationally. A member of the American Academy of Neurology, she is the author of Learning and Memory: The Brain in Action, and co-author of Powerfully Simple Techniques and The Parent Connection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable to all teachers
This slender book is packed with insight into brain research and how to use it to make learning easier and a more pleasant experience for the students and teacher. Sprenger covers safety issues, learning styles and how to change your teaching address them, the effects of stress and how to lesson it, physical needs of the brain, the different kinds of intelligence, and much more. The information is more accessible because much of it is presented as stories from the author's own classrooms and life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative introduction to the field
The book is easy and interesting to read. So much current and practical material has been incorporated into this slim book, cleverly organized around the analogies of The Wizard of Oz. Marilee, as an experienced teacher who reads extensively, has the gift to select the essentials to provide an over-all introduction to "brain-based teaching". The Table of Contents will give a good idea of the scope of coverage: structure of the brain, dealing with stress, emotional growth, developmental cognitive skills, 5 kinds of memories, 8 intelligences, use of music, brain states, brain food, sleep, exercise, learning environment, learning styles, brain-based asesssment...

Once the appetite is aroused by the introduction here, readers can move on to Eric Jensen's books, esp. "Brain-based Learning", "Different Brains, Different Learners". Jensen's recent books all have much better visual format, more sketches and pictures.

(The "marshmallow experiments" on impulse control quoted by Goleman is also quoted here (p. 49). Various authors, e.g. John Gottman, have actually challenged the conclusions.) ... Read more

    Book Description

From the fall of 1999 to the spring of 2000, New York Times education reporter Jacques Steinberg was given unparalleled access to an entire admissions season at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. In that time, he discovered just how difficult it could be to winnow down a list of nearly seven thousand applicants to seven hundred freshmen for the class of 2004.

Steinberg follows an admissions officer and his eight counterparts through the daunting task of recruiting students nationwide, reading through each of their applications, and meeting behind closed doors for a week in March to finalize the incoming class.

He also recounts the personal experiences of a half dozen high school seniors of various ethnic and economic backgrounds as they struggle through the often byzantine selection process. Find out why:

    * high SATs and many extracurricular activities are not always critical
    * a student's "story" can either be helpful or detrimental
    * one student with a 1480 SAT score and high grades can face stiff competition from another three thousand miles away whose board score is 900 and who has a handful of Ds on her report card
    * an officer peering into the application pool is often most excited to see a reflection of him- or herself staring back

4-0 out of 5 stars The god's do play dice with the universe
I read this book and had a wide range of emotions. I will start by stating my views tend to be fiscally and politically moderate. So, I had to temper my frustration in reading a book on college admissions written by a writer for the New York Times (a decidedly liberal newspaper)and of a quite liberal East Coast University, Wesleyan. The choice of school and admission officer to shadow express a liberal bias that may not entirely reflect the view of all top Universities, but is probably true to the nature of Affirmative Action nation wide. Mr. Figueroa, the Admissions Officer, deserves accolades for the passion he expresses in his responsibilities.

That said, my analysis must be dispassionate since my oldest child is currently looking at colleges. So here it is:

    1. The Wesleyan pie is first divided this way, 30% African, Latino and Asian students. Many deserve admission, without question, no matter who you measure them against. These are the HP (high priority) minority students. Others are in the generally acceptable population range according to averages, courses taken, class rank, activities, leadership etc.. Some are at risk students, as are some in the other applicant cohorts. True, these students may be cut a little slack but, remember they still must pass courses to matriculate at the university. The U.S. News and World Report is watching and will note the number of non matriculating students. They will also note the number of students who are accepted and decide to go elsewhere. And so the games begin!

    2. Foreign students are given 3% of the pie. Diversity by ethnicity and country raised in and state of origin produce robustness. The rules for foreign students are very similar I suppose although the book does not go into great detail.

    3. 67% is carved out for those with European ancestry. My only beef here is that there are significant cultural diversity distinctions even amongst Europeans! We are not all rolled out of the same batch of flour or using the same cookie cutter, so to speak. But, alas I digress.

Of this group an expectation of SAT = 1340 or so is expected. This is the benchmark. Quality points are given for challenging AP courses as compared to your peers. The harder the competition at your High School and the more people apply to the same university the lower the probability you have to be picked over your classmates. Unless, of course, you are the one to apply early decision and have all the goods. Subjectivity always is a confounding variable. A wonderful essay read by an Admissions Officer at 3am on Saturday may work as well as the car built by the worst crew on the last Friday of the quota month. But chance does favor the prepared mind so make your essay special for you.

Activities count, clubs, organizations, etc., but being an officer or say President of the Student body counts more for showing Leadership. Life experiences expressed in a well written essay could tip the scale, as well.

Sports are important if you are "the one" who is needed for the team, but usually not without the other components mentioned. A much needed Oboist should get the nod, sometimes even if some deficiencies need to be overlooked.

Diversity by domestic geographic origin also is a consideration. Schools want to recruit and report diversity from all 50 states. Obviously, East coast schools will attract more people from the east and therefore you compete with other east coast students for a subset of the seats to a greater degree than you think!

So, keep the grades up, take the most challenging curriculum, be a leader in school organizations, express yourself in your essays, note any ethnicity that is accurate and listed (or not listed), take an SAT prep course, grind through old SAT exams, know the TEST and how to take it. Take it twice unless you have exceeded the requirements of the schools to which you have applied or you dialed 800 verbal and 800 math. Check out the requirements for financial aid, this sometimes requires persistence. Make a list of schools prioritize them as, dream schools, desirable schools and safe schools. Visit as many schools as possible to be sure they are a good fit for your academic major, that you like the culture of the school, the feel of the campus and that the location makes it easy to get home to see the family...

Roll the dice! Then it all becomes the mathematics of probabilities. Good luck! Remember, the harder you work the luckier you get! And you may find yourself thinking the refrain from an old song which stated in self proclamation, "My future's so bright I gotta wear shades!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Absoutely Fascinating...
I just finished reading "The Gatekeepers" after it was recommended by other mom in my daughter's senior's class. Since several of the schools my daughter is applying to are mentioned in the book it was definitely a must read for me. However, it is a must read for any parent whose child is applying to a selective college/university.

"The Gatekeepers" is written in a wonderfully thoughtful and fascinating manner that it reads like a novel you just can't put down. The insight it provides into the admissions process is invaluable not only in the useful information it provides but also in the "shot in the dark" aspect to applying to a selective school. I think it may help my daughter and myself to relax a bit during this whole thing since so much of it seems random, especially for white middle class kids with great grades and scores.

My daughter is off right now on college tours with my husband and I keep calling her with advice I've learned from the book--she may start blocking my calls. But if you want to know what goes on, read this book, you won't be sorry you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Behind-the-Scenes Information, you normally wouldn't get
About a week ago my English Teacher suggested us to purchase this book and read. She has been prepping us for the College process ever since September, and figured that the book would be a great way for us to understand what kind of thought that will be put into are applications. At first I was not excited about the book because I thought it would be dry and boring, but after reading the first couple pages, I could not put it down. Not only was the information very helpful, but the author really knows how to write a book, and he keeps you interested. I litterally could not wait to know what happens to the students protrayed in the book.

On the bad side though it did scare me a little, because I realized that different students are put on different pedistals. It really goes to show you that school are look for diversity and they will take some pretty major steps to get it (for example a minority student that attends a Prep School with a 3.2 GPA and a 1150 on the S.A.T.'s got excepted with a full ride with a non-minority student at the same prep school with a 3.9 GPA and a 1350 SAT did not).

The Other complant about the book is that it describes the admissions mostly for IVY or IVY-like schools (NOT STATE SCHOOLS), which for the first hundred pages make for confusing calculations (like when they say they like to see scores higher than 1350, for a state school that means 1000).

But all in all I am glad that I picked up the book and started to read, it was one in a long time that I could not put down, and one that I am happy that I have to put on my ever growing book shelf (Thanks Mrs. H!).

3-0 out of 5 stars One Word? - Disappointing
One word to sum-up The Gatekeepers? Disappointing....

    Disappointing because:

    1) the author's viewpoint is decidedly "East Coast" with a larger than life view of Eastern seaboard schools with scant appreciation for any institutions of higher learning beyond the Allegheny's, other than Stanford. The reputations of the holy trinity, Yale, Harvard, and Princeton, are undeniable, but the author's view of American College education seems to be confined to a very few hundred square miles.

    2) the author would use the lives of persons of honor vicariously to further his own career. The nobility, kindness, and charity which unfolded in the lives of Figueroa, Goldman, et al., is more a testament to the character of man than the author's ability to tell the admissions story at a "premier college."

    3) the story reads like a prospectus for Wesleyan University (notably, in the first half). In the author's school boy-ish tone, he gushes about the achievements of the college well beyond what one would hope for in an unbiased investigation by a New York Times reporter.

The tender lives of the student applicants involved in their search for the perfect college will wrench anyone's heart. Give it a try, but don't be surprised if you're disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Heartfelt, Great read for all especially parents
I found this true tale to be touching. I was empathetic to all those involved whether they were those selected from "merit" or "action". I was overjoyed for all the applicants and their growth (and mine) through their experiences. I applauded the thoughtful way applicants were reviewed and considered for admission. There are several views when discussing "merit" versus "action". I believe that in Wesleyan's case, at this snap shot in time, their process although flawed like all other schools does look at the merit of diversity. There action based merit is what eliminates strife with the knowledge we all gain of one another in a diverse environment where all share a common goal. Parents this is a exceptional book, look beyond reading this a purely a guide to admission into your college of choice but devourer these words and walk away with a growth that "will ad" to your life an the world as a whole. You are a "Kevin Bacon" relation to everyone you encounter or never encounter on this planet. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not great preparation
I bought this book with the hopes of increasing my verbal scores tremendously on the GRE. Well, it did no such thing. My score only raised 20 points from a practice test taken with no preparation. Don't bother memorizing the 200 Top Used GRE words because only 1 of them was on the test. Waste of valuable preparation time. Buy something else or read lots and lots of scientific journal articles.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must have
Getting a high score in GRE Vocabulary do not necessarily depend upon years of experience with the English Language. Kaplan's Verbal Workbook is a living testimony to this fact. It definitely increased my test taking ability. It is a must have book. You should be honest in doing all your exercises. The list of high frequency words at the end is not meant to be comprehensive, but a combination of the understanding of the word roots and a familiarity with this word list will carry you a long way. Good Luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but not an Encyclopedia of Verbal
I bought this book hoping to get some boosts in verbal section of GRE. Well, it did but not big enough. I got only 50 points of increase. Altough, 50 points is quite an achievement but not enough to pass my personal limit. For verbal section, the key is to memorize and eat up as many words as possible. This book do provide SOME words, but not enough. For words I would prefer to go with Barron's or use free vocabulary builder software, eg. guru's wordlist.

To ace verbal section will need alot of hardwork, especially for foreigners like me. This book will provide complementary assistant but surely not the bible for verbal section. One thing that I like about this book is it categorizes words according to it meaning, positive or negative, and typical meaning, such as there are many words have the same meaning, this book categorize them.

As always Kaplan has the simple strategy to overcome problems. I like the sentence completion stretegy to paraphrase and words elimination. All in all, if you have time (more than 3 months of preparation) I think this book will increase your score alot, then again maybe it's not because of this book, but because you have memorize so many words.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots to study, little to show
Though I have to admit my score was probably better on the verbal section having studied this book than if I hadn't, I must say it's a lot of work for such a pittance toward your score. For those who aren't applying to English related programs (or others that specifically require higher verbal scores) I'd highly recommend buying a more general book and understanding the methods for eliminating wrong answer choices. This, along with practicing the test format on the ETS software and other Kaplan software helped me much more than the HOURS and HOURS I spent memorizing a 2,500 word vocab list, only to get in the testing center and discover plenty of words I had never heard.

Though the book does include a list of root words and the top 200 words in context (used in sentences, synonyms, etc.) beyond that it simply ranks the remaining 2,300 as equally important. The lists included which group the words into synonymous categories such as "criticize" or "praise" are also too general to be effective if you're working on the harder questions the book is intended to get you to, simply because those questions invariably include multiple antonyms or analogies that could apply and that require you to know the exact nuances of the word. Probably a better idea is to buy flashcards, which are grouped into high, medium, and low frequency words, so you can buy how many ever sets you will have time to study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kaplan, Princeton Review, or Barron's?
I am currently studying for my GRE and an instructor in SAT classes. I agree with most reviewers here that test preparation can hardly be dependent on a single study aid. Kaplan's material always provides down-to-earth strategies, with aphoristic explanations and solid exercises. It is a means to an end; but so do all the other books available in the market. Princeton Review's material tends to be more verbose with less exercises. Their books that are commercially available do not really explain the philosophy behind their approach completely. Most candidates find it difficult to apply their strategies unless they have taken a course with them to teach the material itself. Once you have learned Princeton Review's strategies, their books then make perfect sense. Each question is designed with care to illustrate a particular strategy or method. Barron's adopts a very old school, albeit very consolidated approach to test preparation: building up from one's foundation. Their workbooks tend to have an abundant amount of exercises, which are generally much more difficult than those that would appear in the actual tests. The philosphy behind their approach is that candidates will perform well if they have encountered questions that are more advanced than the standard requirements. I find that Barron's is always a good foundational book if one has months to prepare. Princeton Review generally provides inspiring strategies if you have a chance to learn exactly what they want their instructors to teach as supposed to what they sell in our local bookstores. Kaplan is always a great choice if you have already had some foundation and insight into the test and would like a systematic approach to strengthen your testing skills. ... Read more

I ordered this book along with, "Police Officer, 14th Edition

It is the better of the two I ordered, and had more specific information tailored to the specifications of the california law enforcement exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helped me get the job I have today!
This was my first civil service exam, and I wanted to be prepared. I looked at more than six different books, and decided on this one. On test day, when I opened the test booklet...I knew I picked the right study guide. The test I took was EXACTLY the same format, just different words and situations. The practice tests and other study aids provided within this book made the exam a breeze. I scored the second highest in the group, and I was offered a job with every law enforcement agency I applied for. I'm almost done with the police academy, and I'm working for the agency I really wanted to work for.
It's a great feeling to be prepared, and I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in testing for law enforcement agencies in California. GOOD LUCK!!!

The CPOA (California Peace Officer's Association) has finally given their approval to one of the peace officer preparation books. Although there are many books, this is the first book to be written with California's Civil Service testing process in mind. Other states have different methods for application, but this book zeros in on the information needed for California. I recommend this book to any applicant for a California Peace Officer position. ... Read more

    Book Description

Since its original publication in 1970, this landmark book by William Perry has remained the cornerstone of much of the student development research that followed. Using research conducted with Harvard undergraduates over a fifteen-year period, Perry derived an Anduring framework for characterizing student development--a scheme so accurate that it still informs and advances investigations into student development across gAnders and cultures.

Drawing from firsthand accounts, Perry traces a path from students' adolescence into adulthood. His nine-stage model describes the steps that move students from a simplistic, categorical view of knowledge to a more complex, contextual view of the world and of themselves. Throughout this journey of cognitive development, Perry reveals that the most significant changes occur in forms in which people perceive their world rather than in the particulars of their attitudes and concerns. He shows ultimately that the nature of intellectual development is such that we should pay as much attention to the processes we use as to the content.

In a new introduction to this classic work, Lee Knefelkamp--a close colleague of Perry's and a leading expert on college student development--evaluates the book's place in the literature of higher education. Knefelkamp explains how the Perry scheme has shaped current thinking about student development and discusses the most significant research that has since evolved from Perry's groundbreaking effort.

Forms of Ethical and Intellectual Development in the College Years is a work that every current and future student services professional must have in their library.

2-0 out of 5 stars Snoozefest for a college student
Because I am getting certified to teach, I had to read Perry for a couple of college classes. While I recognize his importance to developmental theories (hence the 2 stars), I have to say that the book was dry, repetitious, sexist, and outright dull. I got no more from the book than I did from the handout my professor prepared, and the handout took less time to read. I'd say the worst part of reading Perry was the fact that he quoted verbatim what the students said, including every um, uh, ah, well, etc. Unless your looking to catch up on some sleep, find yourself a handout...

4-0 out of 5 stars Putting the Perry Scheme in historical perspective
If you already know the secondary literature on the Perry scheme, you know his model of undergraduate intellectual and moral development. Students move through Positions -- NOT "stages" -- as they mature, from a rigid dualistic view of knowledge ("right" vs. "wrong") through various forms of multiplicity -- there is no certainty & so all opinions have the same truth status -- until they reach relativism, in which Position they recognize that all knowledge is contextual. Moving beyond relativism, some become commited relativists, learning to live with competing & contradictory commitments. This is NOT a simple deterministic developmental scheme, as some students retreat from relativism, others deny or reject the implications of their positions, and the time spent in any one position is indeterminate.

What current users of the Perry scheme may not realize is how meticulous he was in constructing it. This book charts the origins of the project from his counseling of students at Harvard & Radcliffe in the early 1950s, through his creation of the Checklist of Educational Values in the mid-50s, to the semi-structured personal interviews with 109 students from the classes of '62 and '63. Although he never lost sight of his ultimate goal -- developing a tool to help people who counseled college students on their journey toward greater self-understanding -- he invested heavily in methodological innovations, creating valid and reliable measures toward that end. Working with a team of graduate assistants, he created interview & coding protocols that are a model of careful scholarly work.

Two other points about the book's value today: First, it contains extensive quotations from the actual recorded transcripts of the interviews, thus allowing us to see for ourselves the correspondence between the model's Position descriptions and the students' own words. Second, Perry's scheme was built on a very strong normative position. He firmly believed that intellectual and moral growth are desirable outcomes of a student's college years. He wrote of the courage students needed to assume the risks of forward movement toward higher Positions in his scheme.

In the last paragraphs, Perry called for a new model of education that would support students in their risk taking, and his call is just as relevant today as it was 30 years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb! A pleasure to see republished.
An excellent read for those interested in the literature of education and student development. The introduction, written by L. Lee Kenefelkamp, not only pays homage to Perry's work, but also places it's relevence in modern educational philosophies. A must have for anyone involved in education! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT the best bang for your buck.
I bought this book as a novice in the rental business hoping to find information that would get me started out on the right foot. I WAS QUITE DISAPPOINTED. I will not go as far as to say that this book is worthless; there are some useful tidbits of information that i found helpful, but there are other books out there that are so much better. I strongly suggest LANDLORDING, by Leigh Robinson (Ninth Edition or newer). It's available on amazon, of course.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Information For The USA
On reading this book no matter how much I tried to focus I found myself wondering whether the content actually related to my own situation in the Uk.

I purchased the book looking for straightforward advice on being a landlord covering aspects such as legal implications, inventory advice etc. However from the information I read on site it was not clear that this was very much a book for those in the USA. Once I started reading it soon became apparent when it spoke of the different laws for different "states", forms with "zip codes" etc. Whilst the general information was useful I felt that I couldn't rely on any document or legal advice as this might not hold for the UK.

A good read but I felt that it should have been highlighted on the site that it was for the USA

5-0 out of 5 stars I use this book in my Rental Property Management Class
As a landlord for over 30 years and teaching classes on the subject in two different schools, this is one book that I have found invaluable as a resource for wannabe and experienced landlords. Don't think you know it all no matter what you read, learn, experience... I'm still picking up tips and hints! Much of my curriculum was already covered in this book but still there was more to use and learning from each other is the way to go! Very happy to see this book on the market and in laymen's terms and with the prominent hints and smiles to make it easy reading.

    Book Description

Endorsed by the High/Scope Early Childhood Reading Institute, this book focuses on phonemic awareness—the ability to recognize the smallest sound units that make up words—identified by reading experts as an essential skill that prepares children for reading.

The 130 phonemic awareness activities included in the book are suitable for small-group learning in preschools, prekindergarten programs, Head Start programs, child care centers, and home-based programs.

The activities are based on the latest scientific evidence about what children need to become confident and successful readers and writers. They also reflect the research-based, classroom-tested, and internationally recognized teaching strategies of the High/Scope early childhood approach.

These brief, self-explanatory, and enjoyable activities require no special teacher training or materials beyond those usually available in active learning early childhood settings.

The activities fall into five content categories: identifying sounds, building rhyme awareness, building alliteration awareness, recognizing letters, and developing letter-sound awareness.

The book offers more than enough activities to meet the standard of 20 hours of phonemic awareness practice recommended for all preschool children by the National Reading Panel and endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education. ... Read more

Although I owned the 6th edition, I can say this book is a must have for everyone. Actually I was a silent person and everytime I wanted to talk, I was a bit trouble sometimes, and this book has help me communicating easier, whether it is business or general.

With this book, started with easy to understand short-theory, move into non-verbal communications, divided by step-by-step preparations, suggestions, how-to-practice, then into verbal communications with letters, from routine & persuasive messages into how to deliver bad news (one of the hardest task), how to create report, how to make visual aids, how to make presentations, and how to make a job letter.

One of greatest feature is it provides many sample letters include few other culture or other countries' style letters, and along with it, there's a reason why he or she write that. There's also some tips how to write in e-mail, or make recorded voice for telephone systems.

This is a must have for everyone, include those who never attended this lecture.

This is a fantastic book. It can be used for reference at home and at work. It helped me fine tune my job resume and also helps in communications between companies at work. Keep this book, you never know when you need a letter format or an outline for some other form of written communication.

This book is really good to help me understand my course. It was well developed and accounted for basic skills needed for people to develop their skills. It was full of useful, colourful illustrations and easy to comprehend. The exercises were excellent and it did make me really able to detect my mistakes. The book would be helpful for future references (example: attending interviews, writing letters). I wouldn't even trade this book with another since I found it will help me to improve my skills in communicating and writing.

If you buy only one book on ADD, make it this one.

It is huge, comprehensive, terrifically well organized and uniquely easy to use. Because it is presented in list form, you can turn to the topic you need and get more information in two or three pages than most books contain in a 25 page chapter that takes you much, much longer to read.

And if you are a parent of a child or teen with ADD, you simply do not have extra time. You will get what you need here and get it fast.

There are even sample forms (goals sheets, behavioral records, and charts) that are easy to copy and use.

This book will make your life easier!

Without a doubt, this is the most comprehensive and easy-to-read book on AD/HD I have ever read. This book would be an excellent reference for any classroom with AD/HD students. The list format makes finding what you're looking for a pleasant experience. Plus, I've been able to incorporate many of the strategies presented in this book, and I'm extremely pleased with the results.
