4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for CCIE Security Lab Exam
After searching for resources for the CCIE security exam, I found this book (CCIE Practical Studies: Security, ISBN: 1-58705-110-9) from Cisco Press website. Even though the title is ¡§Practical Studies: Security¡¨, it should contain more practical studies on security part of the lab exam. ¡§CCIE Practical Studies: Security¡¨ is useful for experienced Networkers to practice the security lab exams by deploying case studies and sample labs before the exam.
An advance feature of this book is it provides a lot of case scenarios. Throughout the book, readers can learn Cisco¡¦s security implementations by step-by-step configurations. Other useful features also include: Review questions and FQAs at the end of all chapters (except Chapter 26: Sample Lab Scenarios) which help readers to get solid idea of security principles and impermanent. The solutions of the 8 complete lab scenarios from the companion CD-ROM also illustrate the complexity of the CCIE Security lab exam.
However, I only give this book four out of five stars since some of the topics listed on the CCIE security written exam blueprint are missing from the book. Two of them are Cisco Secure Policy Manager and Cisco Secure Scanner. CCIE Candidates might not need to configure those Cisco Applications during the lab exam, however, every CCIE should know how to run those applications and how they work. I would love to see those topics will be covered in the next edition of this book. And, If you want to know the principal of Committed Access Rate (CAR), details on Intrusion Detection and specification on Security in General, you should read ¡§CCIE Professional Development Network Security Principle and Practices¡¨ by Saadat Malik (ISBN 1-58705-025-0) first.
Another problem of the book is it uses 42% of its 1000 pages on Routing and Switching, those chapters should be leaved to other books suggested by Cisco Systems (Routing TCP/IP by Doyle and Cisco LAN Switching by Clark and Hamilton). This is book should focus on security part of the exam only. It should mention more on Intrusion detection and Network-Based Application Recognition (NBAR). In my opinion, the first three chapters should also be summarized into a small chapter. CCIE candidate should know how to ¡§formulate a study plan¡¨ or ¡§take regular breaks while studying¡¨. People who don¡¦t know those ¡§study habits¡¨ should take a learning assistance class in a junior college. CCIE exam is one of the toughest professional exams for network administrator and network security engineer. So, if you don¡¦t know how to deal with problems, such as ¡§There¡¦s too much to remember¡¨, don¡¦t take the exam.
Poor Cisco IOS commands organization is also a reason that this book has only four stars. For example in Chapter 17: IP services (page 558), under section ¡§Monitor the MNLB Forwarding Agent¡¨
The book said
¡§To display the status of affinities, or connection information, use the following command:
R2#show ip casa affinities
To display the operational status of the Forwarding Agent, use the following command:
R2#show ip case oper
To display ¡K.¡¨
The section can be rewrote like this
¡§To monitor the status of the MNLB Forwarding Agent.
R2#show ip casa [options]
Options
affinities the status of affinities, or connection information
oper the operational status
stats the statistical information
wildcard information about wildcard blocks¡¨

This is much clear, easy to read and save time if you need to look up the command real quick. Other Cisco press books used the similar format, but I don¡¦t know why this book didn¡¦t follow it.
As the writer wrote in the book ¡§No single source ¡V including this book ¡V can or should claim to be a one-stop solution for the CCIE lab preparation.¡¨ (page 901), readers who are preparing for the exam should also consider buying other books from Cisco Press or searching more information on Cisco Security Applications from Cisco Connection Online. I would recommend this book to CCIE Security candidates who need lab practices and configuration examples. Although you can find plenty of examples from Cisco.com, the book is worth to buy for lab practices before the Armageddon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to prepare for CCIE Security Lab Exam
I would like to congratulate Dmitry and his team and cisco press for putting together this title. This book covers all the topics in good details with examples. It covers 12.2(15)T IOS features which are not easily found elsewhere. Amount of information and labs contained in this book will take anyone hundreds of hours to go through these labs and will certainly prepare them for THE CCIE lab. I am sure Concentrator and IDS chapters will be added in due time.

Full scale labs are very well laid out. If you are prepping for this test, you must go through these labs couple of times.

Great job Dmitry and crew! way to go!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible work by the authors!!!!
Incredible work by the authors. I like the way this book is laid out. The neat thing about it is the way it combines material which could be split into several books. My own CCIE study was not funded by an employer. I had to pay my own way (like most people), so having been able to save money on courses and books was a great benefit to me. The CCIE Security lab requires having a strong background in routing and switching and this book is a great bundle of information that reduces your search and study to the areas on which you are most likely to be tested. I don't have R&S CCIE, so seeing real examples of how routing & switching provides basis for security helped me pass the lab. I failed my first attempt because in my studies I assumed that it was going to be only security based, not realizing that I would be tested on the R&S background as well. I bought this book after I failed, and after completing all the practice labs in the book, I was able to get my CCIE after the second attempt. This book does not go into detail on IDS and VPN Concentrator, but I didn't have them on my test (maybe it was added afterwards).

I disagree with previous reviewer's comments. It seems like the author recommends taking 2 classes worth about $3200 each and buying several books which do not provide applicable lab scenarios instead of a $70-some investment into this book. Whatever topics are not listed in this book (and they can't, otherwise the book would need a forklift to pick it up) can be easily found on CCO for free. It's funny that the reviewer is admitting that somebody with a different background from theirs would give it 5 stars. Well, it seems that my background is different and I do give it 5 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should have covered the Security Topics only.....
I ordered this book in the hope that it would help me study for the CCIE Security Lab exam. I already have Soli's Practical Studies (both volumes). The beginning chapters in the book are related to Ethernet, ISDN, Routing Protocols etc. Don't expect the same level of detail for these topics here that you would find in Soli's book or in Jeff Doyle's book. Use those books to cover these topics. The security Practices (Part IV) of the book is why you bought this book.
Being an instructor for almost all cisco security courses, I was disappointed by the level of detail in Chapters 14 through 17. But then, the book might be covering just what you need for your exam. In my opinion, you need Saadat Malik's book Network Security Principles and Practices. I would give that book 5 stars!.
For me, the only chapters worth anything were Advanced VPNs (Chapter 20) and Chapter 26 (Sample Lab Scenarios -- which has eight scenarios).
The VPN Concentrator, which now appears on the lab is nowhere to be seen in this book. This is a big MINUS for this book.
Depending on your background with network security, you might want to give a better rating to this book as to the depth of the material covered. If you already have Doyle + Soli's books, get Sadat Malik's book + IOS Network Security documentation and attend the CSVPN course and CSIDS courses (if you can). This book does not cover the IDS Sensor at all. It only covers the limited IDS of the PIX and routers.
I would have liked it better if the routing/switching topics would have been left off totally from this book and the focus would have been entirely on the Security stuff (read VPN Concentrator and the IDS Sensor etc). People would tell you that you can get them off the Documentation CD. Well, if so, the stuff that the book has is also on the doc. cd :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars The only real guide for your once in a lifetime lab
Having passed your CCIE Security Qualification Exam, you'll need to spend some time preparing for the lab - no easy task, and with so little information around, you'll need all the help you can get.

I bought this book on its release in July and have just passed the CCIE Security lab in Brussels. The lab was very difficult - and not to be underestimated. This book is close to the real thing and was an invaluable guide, and (with LOTS of practice) helped me to my goal. Above all, it helped me realise how under prepaired I would have been. I'm pretty sure that without this book, I would have failed the lab.

The book has twenty-five chapters of background, followed by eight "Labs" for you to try for yourself. If you can master those in the time given, you'll be in a good position to tackle the real thing. There's the odd typo here and there, but is generally sound and well written, but should of course be suplimented by other material aswell.

Good luck! ... Read more

The Leader's Guide to Standards is a landmark book— written by Douglas Reeves, an expert in academic standards, performance assessment, and accountability— that shows school principals, assistant principals, teachers, and district-level administrators how to build a comprehensive accountability system for standards-based reform that focuses on leadership skills. Reeves offers practical recommendations for assessing and nurturing teacher performance, setting up balanced assessment and accountability policies, and making the case for standards to the public. 5-0 out of 5 stars Teachers are Pivotal for Learner-Centeredness to Occur
Finally... I found an author and educator who states the obvious. In order to be a successful teacher, one has to first understand oneself as a person - the positive and negative aspects of our personality and identity that impact our instruction. Only by understanding these issues are teachersfreed to "move the learner to the center".

Borich does anoutstanding job utilizing a friendly, conversational manner of writing thateasily engages the reader.Research seems to be placed in a better contextwhen Borich "keeps it real" for the reader.

I especiallyappreciate his chapter on questioning strategies, a blatent area ofweakness for many beginning and veteran teachers alike. He even extendsquestions techniques into promoting thinking and problem solving.

Finally, Borich successfully articulates the value of groupcollaboration often overlooked by teachers hooked on cooperative learning. One cannot exist without the other or student accountablily will drop andstudent frustration will prevail.

This is a must read book for anyteacher trainer in search of research to support effective teachingmethods. ... Read more

Book Description

"Reading this wonderful book is like having Jane Vella at your side. She gives us the courage to risk changing our established habits of teaching."
--Clifford Baden, director of programs for professional education, Harvard University

"By marrying theory and practice, Vella has shown how to design learning that takes hold of the learner--mind, heart, and muscles."
--Jack McCall, professor, Principals' Executive Program, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

"You'll feel as though you've found the keys to creating profound and powerfully effective learning experiences. Anyone responsible for engaging a group of adults in learning will find this book invaluable!"
--Rod Brooks, vice president for administration, EXPLORIS

Known for her work in popular education and her worldwide teaching experience, Jane Vella has significantly changed the way we view adult learning. In her three bestselling books--Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach, Training Through Dialogue, and How Do They Know They Know?--she writes with one basic assumption: that learning is most effective when teachers involve their students in the learning process.

In Taking Learning to Task, Vella shifts the spotlight from teaching tasks to learning tasks. Unlike traditional teaching methods, learning tasks are open questions leading to open dialogue between teacher and learner. To illustrate this unique approach, Vella provides seven steps to planning learning-centered courses, four types of learning tasks, a checklist of principles and practices, critical questions for instructional design, key components for evaluation, and other tools. She also shares real-world examples of successful learning programs, including online and distance-learning courses. Taking Learning to Task is a hands-on, practical guide to designing effective learning tasks for diverse learners and diverse content. Teachers, trainers, and all types of instructors will find a wealth of advice for refining their day-to-day practice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for new educators
When you are teaching a class of adults, do you find yourself wondering if the class is getting the information? Do you wonder if you are talking too much? These are questions for all adult educators, and this book is a good first start. It teaches the use of learning tasks rather than lectures.

Jane Vella is a trainer and an adjunct professor. She has written past works on adult training and, at times, refers to them in this book. The cultures and educational backgrounds of students she has taught are many, and she uses that experience. These techniques will help educators work with that.

The book is a short piece that has an easy tone. The beginning educator can easily access this without being caught up in theoretical discourse. This is designed for use rather than reflection. Likewise, Vella gives plenty of examples to walk you through the different steps in planning learning tasks. In one example, she discusses an online history course. Rather than have the student read the test and answer questions (basically enforcing rote memorization), the example asks the student to investigate how the US president gets power through the Constitution. The question is more of an open question that invites exploration rather than a closed question that asks for a parroting of the answer.

Unfortunately, not all of the steps are explained clearly. In some places, there is no example to illustrate the point. In one instance, she mentions there needs to be critical feeling in the lesson. This sounds like a great idea and probably the point that requires the most explanation, but there is no example to make sure the reader follows the writer.

There is also, in my opinion, a bit of bombast. Towards the beginning, Vella mentions graduate students she works with who have trouble with their dissertations. She proposes that they would have no trouble at all if they had learning tasks since preschool. Why is this in the book? If students were lectured on dissertations since preschool, I think they would have success in writing a dissertation in graduate school, too. Because this statement is in the beginning, it makes me wonder if she believes she has a system or idea that will sell itself.

Nonetheless, Vella's book is good for the new instructor or the instructor who feels there must be a better way than lecturing; in contrast, the book may not be a good investment...

4-0 out of 5 stars an important book for all training professionals
I think this book is a must for all people working in the field of adult education. Jane Vella has a unique way to give new life to old concepts, and to make us rediscover the basic principles to be used when designing and leading trainings. New insights into creating willing and motivated teachers—from the teachers’ point of view!

Joseph and Jo Blase provide a unique opportunity for principals to learn what really works in empowering teachers to be their best. Based on interviews with over 800 teachers who describe in detail what their principals do on a daily basis to influence and empower them, the authors show the transformative effects principals can have on teachers’ work both in the classroom and in the wider school setting. And now, an expanded and updated edition makes this critically acclaimed book more valuable than ever.

In this considerably expanded second edition, the Blases have added—

  • Recent data and insights from research, literature, and national reports
  • New figures, models, tips, and reading lists
  • New emphasis on instructional leadership as it relates to facilitative-democratic leadership

Learn what successful principals do—

The authors present descriptions of what successful principals do—from teachers’ actual experiences—that leads to such impacts as improved self-esteem, confidence, commitment, innovation, autonomy, and reflection. Relevant concepts, models, and strategies from the literature help practitioners think through their approach to implementing shared governance.

For both the practicing and prospective principal who want to construct meaningful ways of working with teachers—this book offers critical reflection about leadership using a relevant knowledge base—the teachers themselves.

The strategies the principals used affected the "threedimensions of teacher empowerment" to improve learning: · "Theaffective dimension: teacher satisfaction, motivation, esteem, confidence, security, sense of inclusion, identification with the group and its work(sense of "we") · The classroom dimension: innovation, creativity, reflection, autonomy, individualization of instruction, professional growth, classroom efficacy. · The schoolwide dimension:expression, ownership, commitment, sense of team, and schoolwideefficacy" Empowering Teachers could be utilized as a reference toolthroughout a principal's career because it provides essential strategiesfor success. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Technology in Schools Issues
The editors have brought together a series of articles and studies on the deployment and integration of technology in our schools. The book approaches its subject from several perspectives: curriculum development, professional development, and policy and administration. It provides a good, high level survey of these issues, and its thorough and careful documentation provides anyone wishing to dive more deeply in any given area excellent direction for further investigation. It was a quick, interesting, and entertaining read.

This book should not be the first choice for those looking for specific and tactical hints on technology integration into curriculum. But it provides an excellent overview of the wide range of issues technology raises for education, and as such would be valuable for administrators and policy makers seeking to broaden their perspective in this area. ...
