With such unrelenting change blurring the view, corporate leaders need the benefit of the best thinking in order to focus on the right global strategies.World View offers just such thinking, featuring examples of strategies and best practices used by successful companies worldwide in moving toward global markets. In his introduction to this collection of Harvard Business Review articles, editor Jeffrey Garten pinpoints five emerging themes:

Operating in a global market requires CEOs to rethink every aspect of their strategies. The best strategies require that organizations gather massive amounts of information and process it effectively.Companies that succeed on a global scale are constant innovators, learning and implementing simultaneously.Great global companies create cultures conducive to extensive internal and external collaboration and networking. Radical change brings unprecedented opportunity to capture markets and enhance shareholder value. Seeing globalization through the eyes of leading thinkers and executives who have mastered its challenges, World View presents forward-thinking insights for corporate leaders determined to succeed in the always-new and uncertain global economy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons of Globalization!
I am impressed on Garten's and his contributor writers telling MNCs past lessons trying to penetrate into Asia's markets in India and China. I find it interesting especially local companies tried to sort strategies since there are no longer consider as monopoly to counter-attack before they enter the market! This will give local producers to be much more competitive than before. Eventually, they repaired their reputation and efficient production and service than before!MNCs need to worry much especially they don't understand the Asian culture and taste! It may be a suicide mission if MNCs don't study the culture and the background of the country! Although the population in India and China approxed 2.2 billion doesn't mean that it is a 100% peneteration! These may find on Part 1: Emerging Markets and Part 2: Europe and Asia This book is highly recommended to Asian Small-Medium Entrepreneurship and asian big corporate companies as it is important to know how much competitive market as the world trade tariff walls declined! It is undoubtfully an excellent book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique and Abundant Insights
Many organizations are now struggling to formulate global strategies for the New Economy. Garten has assembled sixteen different essays in which various experts identify a number of different strategies to consider and then suggest how such strategies could be implemented. The material is organized within four Parts:

Emerging Markets [eg Prahalad and Lieberthal on "The End of Corporate Imperialism"]

Europe and Asia [eg Williamson on "Asia's New Competitive Game"]

Corporate Strategies [eg Porter on "Clusters and the New Economics of Competition]

Leadership [three interviews: Victor Fung, Robert B. Shapiro, and John Browne]

Garten then provides Executive Summaries and About the Contributors, both sections giving the reader a frame-of-reference within which to evaluate the specific essays and their respective authors. Garten is eminently well-qualified. You are urged to check out another of his books, The Mind of the C.E.O., in which he shares what he learned from interviews with 40 CEOs of major global corporations.

In the Introduction, Garten identifies several "common themes" revealed throughout the sixteen essays: operating in a global market requires CEOs to rethink everything about their strategies -- even what strategy means in an environment which is changing so fast and is so brutally competitive; the best strategies require organizations that are set up for gathering massive amounts of information and processing it effectively; companies that succeed on a global scale are constant innovators; great global companies create a culture conducive to extensive internal and external collaboration; and finally, virtually all of the authors agree that change is brining unprecedented opportunity to capture markets and enhance shareholder value.

Who will derive the greatest benefit from this superb anthology of separate but inter-related essays? Obviously, the governing board members and other senior executives of global organizations (which include but are not limited to for-profits) as well as CEOs of companies which include one or more of the global organizations among their own clients. Also, business students at the undergraduate and graduate levels who seek a single-volume source of information and insight concerning global strategies for the New Economy. (Have you checked out the price of textbooks lately?) For those in need of additional sources, Garten provides an abundance of them in the "About the Contributors" section.

Those who share my high regard for this book should also check out Dun & Bradstreet's Guide to Doing Business Around the World (Morrison et al) and also, if relevant, Doing Business in Asia (Dunung) and/or The New Silk Road (Stuttard's observations on doing business in China). Having accurate and sufficient information is obviously very important but without an appropriate strategy, information cannot be effectively leveraged. Hence the importance of the diverse and abundant wisdom which is so readily available in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars What we are about to live
In this world of changes we must know our next future. This book brings us these informations. Garten handles a torchlight to the future of the world and organizations. It is surprising how he connects the wires and alll we have to do is just follow the line of the words. Undoubtfully is a great book. ... Read more

Book Description

In the post-Cold War world, trade is the new arena for competition-between nations, between groups, between ethical and theoretical ideas. In this revised and updated second edition of Dilemmas of International Trade political economist Bruce Moon puts contemporary trade events--NAFTA, United States-Japan controversies, the Uruguay Round of GATT, China's Most Favored Nation status, the founding of the World Trade Organization--into historical and theoretical perspective with the British Corn Laws, the Great Depression, the Bretton Woods system, and the origins of the European Union. Economic theory, terms, and concepts are clearly explained and contextualized with those from international relations.

Throughout the book, three central dilemmas are examined: the unequal distribution of income and wealth created by international trade, the tradeoff among competing values that trade requires, and the difficult interrelationship between economic and foreign policy goals within and among trading nations. Though internationally framed, each dilemma has ramifications at a variety of levels all the way down to the individual's role in the global economy-as a consumer, as a citizen, and ultimately as a moral agent. ... Book Description

The financial sector is a critical component of a nation’s economy: it not only contributes directly to output and employment but also provides an essential infrastructure for the functioning of the entire economy. International trade in financial services—together with enhanced prudential regulation and supervision and other basic structural reforms—can play an important role in helping countries build financial systems that are more competitive and efficient, and therefore more stable.

In this study, Sydney J. Key analyzes the role of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the liberalization and regulation of the financial services sector. What makes her analysis unique is that it integrates the very different perspectives of trade policy and financial regulatory policy. Throughout, she emphasizes the complementary and mutually reinforcing relationship between efforts to open markets under the GATS and the intensive ongoing international work on strengthening domestic financial systems, including prudential regulation and supervision.

Key’s study identifies six broad goals for the financial services negotiations in the Doha round. Four of the goals involve what she terms "first-pillar liberalization," aimed at achieving national treatment and market access. These include "binding" existing and ongoing liberalization; removing remaining barriers to national treatment and market access and then binding the resulting liberalization; narrowing or withdrawing broad most-favored-nation (MFN) exemptions; and an incremental approach to cross-border services. The final two goals involve "second-pillar liberalization," aimed at removing nonquantitative and nondiscriminatory structural barriers—namely, developing stronger GATS disciplines on regulatory transparency; and removing barriers that serve primarily to deny to "effective market access" and then binding the resulting liberalization.

Key emphasizes that success in achieving the goals discussed in this study depends significantly on factors beyond the scope of the Doha round negotiations, but concludes that the negotiations can play an important role in helping to accelerate the process of liberalization of trade in financial services as well as solidifying its results in the form of binding commitments subject to the WTO dispute settlement mechanism. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, clearly outlines the issues for the V.C. search.
An outstanding read! Clearly written, I devoured this book in three nights, have since re-read it twice and constantly refer to it for reference.

I also bought the book as a gift for the CEO of an Internet Security startup firm. Interestingly, he left it on a plane by mistake and promptly bought a new copy so as not to go without!

Golis outlines the key elements for structuring the V.C. business plan, which takes a bit of effort to get straight but is well worth incorporating his elements in a formal Business Plan.

As a reality check for other buyers, I used this book as a constant reference source in building a submission for Stage 1&2 V.C. raising (which has now successfully been accepted and is in the 'heads of agreement stage' for $500,000 in funds placement).

The book does not present company management issues. Its focus is on the Entrepreneur and Venture Capital raising issues. ... Read more

Book Description

The debate about the pros and cons of globalization has become increasingly polarized and yet the voices of the rural poor are seldom heard. This book rises above the fray to examine what is happening at the interface between globalization and producers in the South.

Based on extensive fieldwork from the sweeping grasslands of Patagonia to the coffee farms of Ecuador, the authors illustrate the practical obstacles that farmers face in accessing markets, above all, the difficulties of meeting market demands for large quantities of high quality produce in continuous supply. By focusing on eight different products- bananas, coffee, potatoes, coca, wine, sheep, forestry and the Andean grain quinoa- the impact of the global market developments upon smallholder farmers is richly described.

The authors draw lessons from both the success stories and the farmers' frustrated attempts to benefit from market opportunities. They point the way to the changes in policies and markets that are needed, and to practical interventions where development professionals can have a real impact. This book complements existing texts on the macro level of globalization to provide an accessible southern perspective on the debate. ... Book Description

It is widely believed that globalization has proceeded to thepoint where international economic linkages are as strong as thosewithin nations. Struck by research suggesting that this perception isdramatically mistaken, John Helliwell spent three years assessing theevidence. The results are reported in this book, the latest inBrookings' Integrating National Economies series. It provides the mostsystematic measurements yet available of the relative importance ofglobal and national economic ties. The original finding, based ona gravity model of trade flows, was that 1988 trade linkages betweenCanadian provinces were twenty times as dense as those between Canadianprovinces and U.S. states of similar size and distance. A much longerand more detailed body of data is used to expand and explain thesefindings. Data for trade within and among OECD and some developingcountries are used to show that the Canadian-U.S. results areapplicable to other countries. Helliwell then surveys and extends theevidence relating to price linkages, capital mobility, migration, andknowledge spillovers, finding in all cases very large border effects. The evidence offers a challenge to economists, policymakers, andcitizens to explain why national economies have so much staying power, and to consider whether this is a good or bad thing. Helliwell arguesthat since large and small industrial economies have similar levels ofincome, there are likely to be diminishing returns from increases inglobalization beyond levels sufficient to permit the ready exploitationof comparative advantages in trade, and relatively easy access toknowledge developed elsewhere. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Which type is to become a global manager?
Recently I wrote a book about multinational management published in 1968. After finishing this book, I realized that the conflicts between multicultural and multinational difference are stands still under the similar managerial circumstance, though we are living in the digital-dominated world. So I studied this book compared with its' phenomenon as described in "International Management". Keeping a flexible communication skill in multinational-cultural is the key factor to achieve meaningful outcome. For this, the open-minded, instructive and far-sighted personality required first. When they acknowledged difference not wrong each other, they can start to talk about what they want for negotiation, next proceed to persuade or yield a little. This means the more internationalized people there as a matchmaker, the more the company benefited from them. Then how to get Mr. Right for global manager? They all born naturally? Or trained? Both are all right. Person who has got global brain with digital management skill (as Mr. Bill Gatz called) must appeal to adapt extreme change and more action to cope with international risky problem. They could continue to get or lose by trial and error and learned what's the best, step by step and case by case. There are no standard learning system to teach them. That's not the lost rather than investment for human resources for each company ultimately. If you are would-be-global manager or second-rate reginal manager or have a dream of international manager, read this book and write down and analyze what's your strong/weak point more carefully. Then take into action to the first-rate global manager. If anyone who is in a top-management read, they can set effective multinational goal to come and get. How about students or average person? Of course, they will be fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable guide to building a successful worldwide company.
This book should be on the desk of every marketing and human resources manager involved in foreign trade. It is not only for larger companies that have already built a global sales network. It is also for beginners who should consider these cross-cultural factors BEFORE they start selling their goods and services in overseas markets. John R. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Diplomacy on the brinkmanship
Chuck Downes has written exellent book. The history diplomatic contacts United States with North Korea was begin in 1951. Military Armistice Comissionn in Panmunjom was to 1993 only one channel diplomatic contacts. Chuck Downs described north korean diplomatic behaviour. Tis diplomacy on the brinkmanship. This continue now by Kim Chong-il. Spreading nuclear programme after withdrawal from nonproliferation regime. Book is detailed description events in history this contact. Murders axes from Panmujom accident , Pueblo warship case, Submarine commando strikers are only leading examles this activity. This book is needed for all diplomats, scholars , journalists try understand korean issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vindication
I read this book when it first came out. Anyone who did is unsurprised about the past several months' developments -- except by the fact that some in the free world still want to reward North Korea for doing what it is already obligated to do.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doctrinaire View of the North
When you consider that Mr. Downs does not speak Korean, and has never spoken directly with North Koreans, either on a friendly basis nor in an adversarial sense across the bargaining table, all you are getting here is a second-hand rehash reflecting of the stand-off at Panmunjom. A serious mirror study of U.S. negotiating tactics there would not be too complimentary. This book is more about conservative U.S. opinion of the Clinton administration than anything else. Read Scot Snyder instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
This book is suspiciously loaded with one-sided story. This book emphasizes
north Korea as unpredictble and crazy while there is no mention
about US negotiating strategy, which I suspect is part of the problem.
I give a low mark just because there is not much opposing views or alternate
objective presentation. Judging from the authors, I can't but suspect
that book is not well balanced.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you know something about Korea it would be interesting
I would like to have either more on the actual negotiating or more on the history but the book seems to jump back and forwards between the two leaving me the reader a bit confused. So someone like myself who knows little about US and North Korea relations got little from this book.

Disappointingly it does not include that much about how other goverments (in particular South Korea) reacted and played in these talks.

However if you want to know about how the North Korean goverment have behaved with the US this is a very good book. I was stunned to read the sort of documents the US has had to sign in dealing with the North Koreans.

It shows the limitation that the US faces even in a region that it is the major power. ... Read more

The increasing international mobility of capital, firms and consumers affects tax policies in most OECD countries, playing a major role in reforming national tax systems.
