4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Companion Book
This book is a nice companion to the more comprehensive "International Job Finder: Where the Jobs are Worldwide." While "International Job Finder" provides everything you could want to know about where to find jobs around the globe via the Internet and in print, the value of "International Jobs" rests in the in-depth information it provides about hundreds of international employers. "International Job Finder" is a lot more candid about how to stay safe overseas these days while "International Jobs" pretty much glosses over the risks in overseas work. But between them, the two books cover just about everything you need to know for a successful international job search. ... Read more

Book Description

After decades of seemingly unsurpassable growth and prosperity, Japan's economy declined in the 1990s.The reversal stunned observers: How could the economy have reversed itself so abruptly? Bai Gao's illuminating analysis of Japan's economic story demonstrates how the same economic institutions could produce both remarkable successes and a prolonged slump. In Japan's Economic Dilemma, Gao describes tensions within the Japanese economic system that created a bubble in the 1980s, yet became unsustainable and led to a stagnant domestic economy in the 1990s. Those who have been following the lively debate over "What became of the Japanese Miracle?" will appreciate Gao's historical perspective and multilayered analysis.Bai Gao is an associate professor in the department of sociology at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He was a visiting scholar at Tokyo University and taught at Hitotsubashi University and Yokohama National University. 4-0 out of 5 stars Finally a readable book on international marketing
After ploughing through too many dry, long texts its really refreshing to find a book that is not only useful and informative but really easy to read - when you as busy as most of us are it is of paramount importance to get some real value and memorable tips and tricks QUICKLY!

4-0 out of 5 stars an essential perspective
As a student of marketing at the University of NSW in Sydney where co-author Dr Chris Styles lectures I was fortunate enough to get a first hand insight into the ideas behind this most worthwhile text. I remember asking Dr Styles if his course was one through which I might pass but ultimately take nothing from like so many other "theoretical" subjects. He recommmended I read the book and needless to say, I enrolled after reading the first few chapters. It is always a great challenge to find a book that synthesises well researched argument with those gems of practical advice that make a difference over and over again in 'real life'. Definitely one for the library of perspectives that you will refer to in your head on countless occasions in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Silk Road to International Marketing
The authors claim that business success comes, in part, from getting the human side right: emotions, relationships etc. When doing business across borders and cultures, whether directly with consumers or with business partners, this becomes all the more important. Those who have lived it (like me), will immediately understand - those who haven't, should read this book before they do.

But the bottom line is that the authors seem to get it. And they explain this with examples, as well as analysis, and also give out some practical tools which should help pretty much anyone involved in international marketing.

The book also has a few novel ways of thinking about issues - whether one precisely agrees with them or not, they are very thought provoking (and in my view) at least generally correct and insightful. The concepts of "social learning" (where the SILK acronym in the title comes from) and of the "impact of biology" on marketing are quite intriguing.

..... leaves you with a new (and better) perspective on international marketing issues.

A great read for a dull flight ! And the people who should really read this book, probably fly a lot. ... Read more

China has the world's most rapidly changing large economy, and according to Ted Fishman, it is forcing the world to change along with it. "No country has ever before made a better run at climbing every step of economic development all at once," he writes, in China, Inc.: How the Rise of the Next Superpower Challenges America and the World. China is currently the largest maker of toys, clothing, and consumer electronics, and is swiftly moving up the ladder in car production, computer manufacturing, biotechnology, aerospace, telecommunications, and other sectors thanks to low-cost, high-tech factories. China is also where the world is investing. In 2004, for instance, the city of Shanghai alone attracted over $12 billion in direct foreign investment, roughly the same amount as all of Indonesia and Mexico received. In tracing China's ascendancy over the past 30 years (with annual growth of an astonishing 9.5 percent), Fishman presents a flood of facts, figures, forecasts, and anecdotes and examines the implications of this unprecedented growth for China, the U.S., and the rest of the world.

Calling China's huge population "arguably the greatest natural resource on the planet," Fishman details how hundreds of millions of peasants have migrated from rural to urban areas to find manufacturing jobs, providing an unlimited, low-wage workforce to power China's economy. In the process, this shift has changed both Chinese culture and the global business climate in significant ways. Simply put, American companies can't compete with wages as low as 25 cents an hour and lack of regulation and oversight, so are forced to move their operations to China or completely change the focus of their business. And it's not just a problem for the U.S.--even Mexico is outsourcing to China. Though it remains to be seen whether this will truly be the "Chinese Century" as Fishman asserts, China, Inc. is a brisk and informative look at why so many American corporations, and American jobs, are heading to China. --Shawn Carkonen ... 1-0 out of 5 stars is he on the China Inc pay roll?
Most disappointing read I've experienced in a long time.Fishman's viewpoint speaks to some kind of Chinese Confucian exceptionalism that the Chinese themselves cherish--but it doesn't wash.Rather than look at the flip side of each of the economic advances, Fishman doggedly marches us thru anecdote after anecdote about China's inexorable rise to the top.His viewpoint is Clintonesque pragmatism that is more in love with a Euro social democratism than American entrepeneurialism. His dismissal of Taiwan as a "psuedo nation" is especially damning.Tianamen is the white elephant in the book-- he hardly ever comes near it.His tacit approval of China's intellectual piracy is disturbing. All in all, his take seems to be that the big super power threat in question is that the Chicoms are treating their slaves better these days and eeking out more from their pathetically cheap manual labour.

If anything, I was less impressed with what China has supposedly achieved after reading China Inc than I had been previously.

If Fishman is on the payrool, he has done his employer no favours with this bit of see-thru propaganda...

4-0 out of 5 stars China's Economic Viability Is All in Its Numbers
China's impending takeover of the global economy is not news, but author Ted C. Fishman lends a welcome and provocative perspective to this inevitable development. He informs us that in 1949, the Chinese Communists broke centuries of feudalism to mold the country's now 1.5 billion inhabitants into a disciplined workforce. Thirty years later, the economic reforms set in motion by Deng Xiaoping subsequently unleashed the pent-up entrepreneurial spirit of the Chinese people, producing workers that have become irresistible to the world's manufacturers. Concurrently, on the political front, the Communists who run China have actually reversed the social dynamic set forth by Karl Marx, who said that capitalism is the final stage of human development before communism. In China, communism has instead become the final stage before the full fruition of capitalism.

Fishman contends that China is well poised for success by wielding a competitive advantage Japan, the last global entrant, could never provide, an endless and cheap supply of workers. Lots of statistics fortify the strength in China's numbers - there are more workers there than people in this country, there are more Chinese who have studied English there than people who speak English here, and the state owns all the factories and machinery over there versus the capital that has to be invested privately here. Couple this data with an authoritarian government that can manage industrial policy without the distractions of public opinion or politicians running for re-election, and one can see China's preferred position pretty clearly from Fishman's perspective. However, the author is almost too preoccupied with the data and not enough on the culture itself. Unlike Japan, China is a country divided into haves and have-nots ruled by a heartless regime that crushes all dissidents. While millions in the cities are benefiting from economic development, hundreds of millions more are missing out on the boom because they remain trapped in the countryside or have lost their jobs in obsolete factories leftover from the Cultural Revolution. The other side of an authoritarian government, which Fishman only gives passing mention, is that the one-party rule runs deep in China. The absence of free elections and a free press creates an environment where the truth becomes arbitrary, and obviously that would make any potential investment decision that much riskier.

What Fishman does argue convincingly though is that the developed world has to take some accountability for China's outsized economic growth. U.S. investment in China has reached passed $700 billion, a figure that highlights the startling co-dependency between China and the U.S. The Yuan is tied to the dollar, and if China were to use its leverage and dump the dollar entirely (a feasible option in our terror-stricken world), markets would crash and threaten global economic stability. And one can argue, as Fishman does, that China has taken a less myopic view of its economic survival than its western counterparts, as we continue to focus on short-term gains to alleviate our own downturn. It is this very leverage that has broken apart the heretofore tripartite world between the U.S., Europe and Japan (which is in potential danger of making a slow fade from this trio). This book could have provided more value if he could have delved deeper into how the Chinese entrepreneurial spirit and continuing economic reforms have been shaped by its existing culture and what impact the economic growth may have on their culture going forward, in particular, China's continuing violation of human rights. But what Fishman does offer is a valuable wake-up call to recognize the impact of China's burgeoning economy now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
So far, one of the most disapointing book I've ever read about China. Check also the review from Mr Chiang.

The book is essentially about how Chinese are killing our jobs, lowering prices, how they are going to dominate the world, etc. What about the 16 millions manufacturing jobs lost in China between 1995 and 2002 ? They were inefficient. So were the american jobs.

Authors also underlines that China relies on the biggest foreign direct investment (FDI) in the world ? Sure, so they take all our money and knowledge. Or may be they take money from Hong Kong and Taiwan, which represents 40% of China's FDI or from the Virgin Islands (10% of FDI), or may be this money is Chinese after all(through "round tripping").

China bought 7% of the world's oil, scary, huh ? What is more scary to me is that 5% of the population consumed 22% of the world's oil, if we include Europe, 12.5% of the world's population consumed 41%. It seems also that Gubei is a city in the city ? I live 10 minutes form Gubei, never noticed...

China needs a low yuan, otherwise they would lose their cost advantage ? Even if the yuan goes up 25%, what would it change, really ? India's labor force is already a lot cheaper than China. China is not only cheap labor, not anymore.

In this book, all facts are true but they are presented just to prove one thing : China is going to rule the world thanks to its manufacturing power. Really ?

They may be will, but certainly not because of their cheap labor cost, but mainly because China will be driven by its domestic market, one of the fastest growing in the world. So the question is : Is China really a big threat (as mentioned in this book) or is it one of the biggest opportunity for western companies ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book from a Chinese student point
The author of this book had a very good observation and reasonable argument. Actually, I believe that is the strength of America. Information flows so fast and I can get this book from library for free. After solving the basic problem of living, China has to go the America way to stimulate creativity and gracious.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Superpower Cannot Be Afraid Of Its People's Creativity
This book is disappointing. No world power - let alone a superpower - has risen simply from the largesse of rich countries' exporting surplus capital and using low-wages to drive profits back home.
If Mexico had a billion people, need anyone have gone to China ? More than Japan Inc., China is basically a very large version of the 1990s "miracles" in southeast Asia, while China Inc. may just turn out to be an Enron.
China's greatest weakness is the sheer hollowness of its insides. There is no free press to provide early warnings or correctives to the country's wild transformation.
China is still officially Communist - whatever that means. But there are ticking time bombs in the form of the 3Ts - Tibet, Taiwan and the legacy of Tienanmen.
As in Tienanmen (which was the first round), democracy will stir up people, as they become richer and more aware, in spite of continued censorship of even the Internet. Visitors to the Potemkin cities on the south rarely bother to understand what is going on in China's teeming countrysides.
I think that if there is a potential superpower, it lies just south of China. India has moved slower, but is beginning to close the gap steadily, and do this without the quick fix of foreign investment. Whether in the highest ends of technology, or fashion, cinema, the media and music, the difference between India and China is simple: democratic India is harnessing the creativity of Indians. China's system cannot permit this, or it will implode.
For the sake of balance, I recommend readers to also consider another book 'Rising Elephant' - from which I have drawn my arguments. This is a far more profound analysis with a similar subtitle to China, Inc. - about India's challenge to "America and the World."

Book Description

The 1990s began with fears of a "great sucking sound" of jobs lost due to the North American Free Trade Agreement and ended with opponents of the World Trade Organization taking to the streets in the "Battle of Seattle." Why has global trade become so controversial? Does free trade deserve its bad reputation? In Free Trade under Fire, Douglas Irwin sweeps aside the misconceptions that litter the debate over trade and gives the reader a clear understanding of the issues involved.

Putting the findings of an extensive body of economic research at the disposal of the general public, Irwin examines the positions of the proponents and critics of free trade--and makes plain the stakes involved in their disagreement, particularly for the United States. He explains the economic benefits of trade, not just for corporations but for people and the environment. He illustrates how protectionist policies damage the economy and fail to save jobs. Examining U.S. trade policy, he shows how "fair trade" measures are arbitrary, unfair, and often harmful. He then demystifies the World Trade Organization and sets the record straight about its controversial rulings on trade and the environment. Irwin does not hold up free trade as a panacea but demonstrates why it is our best alternative.

In a debate where assertions often masquerade as arguments, Irwin's analysis is firmly evidence-based--rooted in empirical research and relying on specific examples and illustrations. Finely argued, Free Trade under Fire makes a vast body of economic learning accessible to nonspecialists. It is an essential primer for anyone who wants to understand one of the most burning controversies of our time. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of ahistorical assertions and disingenuous arguments
In this book the author argues for the "economic benefits of trade, not just for corporations but for people and the environment. He illustrates how protectionist policies damage the economy and fail to save jobs. Examining U.S. trade policy, he shows how "fair trade" measures are arbitrary, unfair, and often harmful"

Yet this author makes slight of America's long history of protectionist policies when it served its interest. In fact the history of America's industrial development was protecting her rising industries. So now that Americas industries are strong and known world wide; its labor force is a problem because it wants decent wages and health benefits. What is the solution? Free trade! Or free trade in cheap labor and dealing with counties that have no labor unions, no regulations that get in the way of business and officials that are easy to bribe.
This book is for those who have no critical facilities what so ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars The case for free trade
Irwin's book, together with Bhagwati's Free Trade today,
makes a strong case for free trade. The argument is clear and
the book is easy to read and full of evidence supporting
free trade. Among other topics, the author discusses
the harmful effects of protection on developing/
developed economies, trade and the environment
and the role of WTO. Irwin's book is non-technical
and more historical than Bhagwati's. The latter
is more theoretical, at least in some parts, but also
a great read. For arguments against free trade using
economic theory see "trade warriors" by Marc Busch or " global Trade and Conflicting National Interests"
by Ralph E. Gomory, William J. Baumol

5-0 out of 5 stars Necessity to arguing
Doesnt it always seem that your friends subscribe to the wrong views, and you to the right one? Well, at least for me it is. Whether your pals are from the anarchist wing or the Pat Buchanan camp, or even deviate just a little from your (correct) free trade stance, you should read this book. And even if you believe in the unholy stance of skepticism of free trade , you should read it too, for "The Economist" said that if this book doesnt convince anti-free traders, nothing will; so go ahead and test your faithfulness.

I am not an economist, and I hate reading economics text books filled with useless jargon. Before reading some great books, economics was as complicated as chemistry, physics or calculas to me. But after reading a few books, "Lexus and the Olive Tree", "Mystery of Capital" and "Peddling Prosperty", I realized that it isn't that complicated, its just the economists who create this aura of an esoteric subject.

This book is written in simple language, but when it does use phrases that regular people don't understand, he does something rare - he explains their meaning.

This is an excellent book, but only after reading The Lexus and the Olive Tree. Tom Friedman's book is the main weapon in my debating arsenal, and "Free Trade Under Fire" book gives me a large cache of ammunition, as do Peddling Prospery (or anything else by Paul Krugman like Pop Internationalism, another MUST read), and Henrando de Soto's masterpiece "The Mystery of Capital"(dont even look at his "Other Path", it is simplified and better argued in this "Mystery").

Highly Recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading This Book Will Make You Smarter
I have had the honor of having the author of this book as a professor in college. Not surprisingly he teaches classes dealing with international trade. All I can say is that he is an economist of the highest order and that he is capable of taking some extrodinarily difficult concepts and explaining them with a level of clarity that make them seem obvious. He takes this teaching approach to his book, making it both intelligent and approachable. If you ever actually wanted to know anything about international trade and even be able to discuss in a relevant manner the points at hand, read this book. You will be smarter for having done so. ... The Global Business Series is designed to ease the process of doing business abroad. Though each book concerns a different country, they all follow the same general format by describing how climates and geography shape unique cultures, which are perpetuated through insidious, subconscious imprinting of children by the family and school. Cultural conditioning is so powerful that it defines thought, determines behavior, and limits expression. If you understand your counterpart's cultural conditioning, you will have a great advantage. An understanding of how foreign cultures dominate and permeate foreign economies, politics, and business is vital for negotiating and managing abroad.

The books in the Global Business Series do more than show how to make business use of an understanding of foreign cultures. They serve as springboards to international business by providing information on sources for help, travel tips, living conditions, and ways to overcome cultural shock and enjoy your foreign assignment.

Note: Other books in this series pertain to Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Thailand and Mexico respectively. ... Read more

Book Description

Over a Barrel: A Simple Guide to the Oil Shortage is meant as a concise summary of the urgent oil shortage issue, written to be read by everyone of high school age or older. It provides a balanced and factual picture of the medium-to-long range role of oil in supplying the world’s energy needs, as well as an understanding of the many technical and social implications of the alternatives to oil.

A foundation in understanding energy is provided by the early chapters on energy concepts, history, uses, and sources.Emphasis is given to the special energy requirements of the transportation industries that are 97% dependent on oil-based fuels.

Then, the focus shifts to understanding oil.World supply and demand for oil is carefully explained, showing that we have used about half the oil that nature took over 100 million years to create and that oil production will begin to decline soon. These chapters show that the rising world demand will create a permanent and increasing shortage of oil and that the Middle East has over 60% of the oil reserves.

Oil alternatives are reviewed with the alarming conclusion that we don’t know which of them can overcome their many technical and social issues to fill some of the gap that will be created by declining oil production. The case for more and better organized research and development of alternatives to oil is made.

The book explores life in a world with declining oil and no alternatives – an unpleasant life.Suggestions are then given for actions to be taken by the reader to support R&D efforts and for fuel conservation to extend the time we have to accomplish the identification and building of industries for alternatives to oil. ... Book Description

After fifteen long years of dialogue and heated debate, China has at last gained entry to the World Trade Organization. It will take its place among the other member states at the end of 2001. This unique and important book analyses the implications for world trade of this momentous event, as seen by the next WTO's Director-General.

The key sections of the book discuss:

  • the effect that accession will have on China as it struggles to meet all the requirements of the WTO
  • the future role of the WTO and its current shortcomings
  • WTO, Globalization and its Critics - Battle in Seattle, Davos etc
  • Implications for the USA, Asia and Europe - the strains that will be placed on the existing order
  • shift in the balance of global power as China overtakes Japan and matches the economic power of the US
China's economic growth and its role in the WTO will be in the news for years to come. This book, from the man who will help shape the future of global trade, will be widely reviewed by the global media as Dr Supachai is the first director-general from a developing nation to hold this key position.

China's entry to the WTO is a landmark event in the 21st century. It is a clear signal that China is ready to take its place amongst the global economic powerhouses and that it is prepared to play by its rules. This book, by the next Head of the WTO, explains the importance of this event and its implications for the future of world trade. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
This book is a bit unfocused, but even its tangents are interesting. You get a few pages here on Chinese history, a few pages there of polemic about rich nations' unfair trading practices, here a digression, there a ramble. It's not completely about China and it's not completely about the WTO, though those bases are covered, and the other subjects it touches upon - including Asian regional economics - add to its value. The authors put both sides of the debate over trade in reasonably fair focus. We confirm that what they say about China, while not new, merits mulling over by anyone affected by globalization.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Good read But Somewhat Slanted
This book does an excellent job of covering the issues of China & the WTO during globalization. However, it lacks coverage of what this will all mean for Western countries and the jobs that will inevitably be lost here. The previous reviewer contradicted himself by saying:

"The phenomenal success of recent economic growth is attributed to high savings rates, *protective laws* and strong and effective government policies."

"Protective laws" and Globalization oppose each other. Proponents of globalization say that protectionism and globalization cannot work together. The WTO purports to impose "free trade" on all its member countries. Yet while the west, especially the U.S. is opening its markets, its economies are nosediving. At the same time, China, who as the last reviewer admits practices protectionism is thriving. It's no coincidence. In an Animal Farm kind of way, the last reviewer is kind of saying "Some WTO countries are more equal than others". We either have free trade and all WTO members have to play by the same rules, or else we don't.

Why are U.S. markets forced wide open under WTO rules and countries like China are allowed to continue to practice protectionism? The book does not address any of these seeming contradictions in the argument for 'globalization'.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book for any business student
I'm a Vietnamese international student in Boston-USA, I have been haunted by the quest of knowing more of the impacts on the southeast asia region once China entered the WTO. I hoped to predict what would happen in Vietnam once it enters the WTO because VN is likely to follow China's track and how she would deal with it. And this book says it all, it helps me so much in looking for the near future of VN, and what sector of VN needs to be fortified to be ready for the economic fight in the globalization process.

This is a well-written book with illustrations and proofs of points. The authors are well-respected in the economics community, as one of them will be the WTO Director General in Sep, 2002, and the other is the Regional Editor for BusinessWeek.

The economic impact of China accession is so profound that the book shouldn't be overlooked. This book will help you see the conflicting aspects of state-owned and private-held enterprises in China and the prospect of continuing administrative and economic reforms through the binding of WTO trade laws.

I gave the book 5 stars because it deserves to be the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exellent Report on China and the WTO.
In December 2001, China agreed to join the World Trade Organization. According to projections, economic reforms undertaken since 1978 will help China to increase its GDP to $2.2 trillion by 2010, standing behind the United States, Japan and Germany. This progress raises many serious questions for its internal transformation and her role in the global economy.
The book considers carefully the economic, social and political consequences of this event. The phenomenal success of recent economic growth is attributed to high savings rates, protective laws and strong and effective government policies. However, the great challenges facing China to become a truly modern state are institutional reforms for sustained economic growth.
Based on the World Bank's projections, China would become the world's second largest economy in 2020 with 8% of global output, trailing the United States with a 19% share. If this happens, China's skilled workers would also see the world's highest wage gains, nearly a double increase! Consequently, the great challenge China's government and the World Trade Organization will face is to make sure that all levels of society receive a fair share of its economic growth.
Supachai Panitchpakdi and Mark Clifford correctly believe that globalization and trade promoted by the WTO for all nations, many of which are small, are equally important for China as well. Numerous studies indicate that there is a strong correlation between free trade and growth. Finally, it should be recognized, that China's entry into the WTO will dramatically raise the stakes for its Asian neighbors and rivals. It would attract more foreign investment followed by a higher sustained rate of growth and in turn would increase international trade and development and help other countries to develop their economies as well. ... Book Description

This book cuts through the daunting technicalities of one of the most important of the WTO (World Trade Organization) agreements, that dealing with Intellectual Property Rights (hitherto primarily the preserve of national patent legislation) and their treatment as internationally tradeable commodities. Professor Correa makes comprehensible the TRIPS Agreement and explains its main provisions.

He is particularly concerned to explore the Agreement's massive implications for developing countries. These relate to the future of local R & D, their access to advanced technology (here he focuses on information technologies -- computer software, multimedia products, integrated circuits and digital information), commercial exploitation of natural resources and possible welfare effects. Pressure is mounting on Third World governments to implement the Agreement through national legislation. Professor Correa indicates concrete options available to implement the provisions in a manner consistent with these countries' development objectives and public policy concerns.

This book is an essential introduction to TRIPS and provides elements to develop policies and laws on intellectual property from a developing country perspective.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT MUCH USE IN THE REAL WORLD
I'm a professional resume writer who works globally. I found this book to be filled with outdated and simplistic templates rather than intelligent ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars HERE IS WHAT EXPERTS SAY ABOUT THE BOOK....
Hi.

I came to know of this book when I was reading thru a few magazines and browsing the net for some book like this. Its so great that I thought it would be more helpful if I let people know what experts in the filed had to say...

"What can I say about THE GLOBAL RESUME AND CV GUIDE but WOW! There is so little information about regarding the international job search and we are fortunate to now have such a great resource available!"

REVIEW BY: Margaret Riley Dikel Editor of The Riley Guide and Author of THE GUIDE TO INTERNET JOB SEARCHING

********************************************************************************************

"THE GLOBAL RESUME AND CV GUIDE is the new bible for wanna-be globe trotters. This resource should be the starting point for international job seekers and will help give you the leg-up when looking for work abroad. Thompson's guide works because it uses local experts to explain the key steps in a job search. I recommend this book as a must buy...

2-0 out of 5 stars Thick on coverage, thin on details
Imagine a single reference that describes in detail how to craft the perfect resume for employers around the world. This guide would explain the expectations of far-flung employers relative to the standard practices of your home country, indicating how to map your existing resume to the each target country's culture. This is not that book. Not that "The Global Resume and CV Guide" doesn't try -- and occasionally succeed, at least where certain countries are concerned. Ultimately, what is touted as one of the book's greatest strengths proves to be a disappointing weakness: each country section is written by a "local expert", meaning that the guide effectively has many authors. The first downside of this approach is that the information on any given country is not typically framed in terms that make sense to the reader, because the author is not necessarily familiar with the resume practices of the reader's country. A second downside of this approach is that there is significant variation in the quality and level of detail between country sections. For example, the section on the United States spans 18 pages, including two sample resumes. The section on the United Kingdom, in contrast, includes a mere 5 pages and no sample resumes. The UK section also leaves unanswered basic questions like whether "CV" or "resume" is the preferred term. Ultimately, though, the biggest disappointment is the lack of detail, understandable in a guide that attempts to cover nearly 40 countries in less than 300 pages. If you're looking for a high-level overview of the requirements of many different countries, you'll likely find this guide useful. But if you're looking for details and lots of sample resumes, you're probably better off purchasing a guide specific to your country of interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
This is a great resource - especially for career centers! Very helpful - if you need to write or read a resume for or from another country, this is the book you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Tool for International Jobs
I'm looking for a job overseas right now, and Thompson's book has already been a tremendous help! It is so complete - with addresses, phone an fax numbers, Internet sites -- all kinds of information, and all up-to-date. I graduated in June and I just wish I had this book earlier. ... Read more

Book Description

Market-defining since it was first introduced, International Business, 4e by Charles W. L. Hill, continues to set the standard for international business textbooks. Charles Hill’s reputation as a leading thinker and actor in the international arena precede him, and he is regularly asked to explain world economic events on National Public Radio. His expertise lends itself to a book that is thorough and up-to-date. Because many issues in international business are complex, they necessitate exploration of pros and cons of economic theories, government policies, business strategies, organizational structures, etc. The author challenges the often shallow explanations that other books offer, while maintaining a tight integrated flow between the chapters. Hill’s book is practical in nature, focusing on managerial implications of each topic on the actual practice of international business. The author’s passion and enthusiasm for the international business arena is apparent on every page as he strives to make important theories interesting, informative, and accessible to all students. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook on Globalization of Business
Dr. Charles Hill has the rare combination of excellent subject matter expertise and writing skill. I purchased this textbook for an MBA course on Global Business and have been extremely impressed with Dr. Hill's work. It is organized, easy to read, the introduction and sidebars augment the text exceptionally, and the case studies are thorough and applicable. Unlike another reviewer, I found the depth of coverage to be appropriate for an MBA program and especially enjoyed the treatment of monetary systems and the weaving of economic theory throughout most chapters. This book is a keeper.

1-0 out of 5 stars this book did NOT include the CD nor the map as stated
I ordered this book for a 6 weeks class I am taking and only ordered this one because it included the CD and the MAP that I needed. I could have ordered just the book for around $40, but I choose to pay the extra (almost to $90) because it this one SAID that it included the CD and the MAP - well guess what it didn't I was RIPPED off - the class is over a very short time period thus I have no time to return the book and get another
BUYER BEWARE!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars WARNING
This is a third edition Book. Most classes that are now in session are looking for the fourth edition - I found this out the hard way. So watch out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in-depth introduction
I found this book to be a well organized and stimulating. I have taken a course in Int Business as part of my undergraduate business degree. I discovered this book offered as part of an Int Business degree program at another institution and decided to purchase it. I found it to be so much better than the first go around that It was like I never learned Int business to begin with. Well written; I am very skeptical of typos and could only find one which was very minor. This book is a real eye opener and you will never want to stop reading it. It is one of my favorite text books! Thanks Charles Hill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most useful handbook
As a prescribed book for our MBA course (University of South Africa) I found this publication most enlightening. It is current and up to date, and addresses diverse topics which exert influences on business. Themes include national and cultural differences, global trade, politics and investment, the global monetary system, foreign exchange and capital market, strategic issues, and business operations.

I could find nothing wrong with the writer's style. References are copious and the text is fairly easy to understand. Although it could be argued that postgraduate students will grasp the contents easier, even an undergraduate friend of mine found the book fascinating and well written.

Whether for formal studies or personal interest I can highly recommend this volume. ... Read more
