5-0 out of 5 stars The Professor Says:
Having read his sixth edition, I was impressed enough with the 10th edition that I use it for the college class I teach. Unlike most books in this area, Dr. Helfert's book is easy to read and VERY practitioner oriented. I truly believe that if you have an interest in financial analysis, either as an investor or from the perspective of running your own organization, this is the single most valuable resource you could own. If I didn't believe that was true, I'd have my students using a different book. ... Read more

One of the best F&A books written for general managers I have read. Detailed enough to give the reader an excellent grasp of the subject, but doesn't require calculus to understand. 3-0 out of 5 stars One of the better books available
This publication provides a thorough and comprehensive review of almost every important aspect of accounting, financial analytics and reporting. A useful tool for a person new to finance or someone needing a refresh or review of important topics. A solutions manual would have been helpful, but the book is a valuable buy nonetheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good for understanding the subject
The book provides very clear explanations about different aspects of financial statement analysis. The only drawbacks are that the book is a little simplistic and that problem solutions are sorely needed. However, I am sure you are not going to use oit for self-study- you would be using it as a textbook in a financial statement analysis class. The professor, would be able to provide you with solutions (as in my case- thanks Dr. Church!) and will also help you out with some of the tougher stuff. Whatever, the book does an excellent job in explaining the basic stuff- much better than the Sondhi book.

2-0 out of 5 stars agree with others - needs solutions manual - useless without
I agree with those that say this book would be more useful if it came with solutions. Right off in the first chapter, hypothetical situations are presented without any background information in the text. If you haven't had some experience in Accounting, you are going to be left scratching your head. The instructor in my class says that it causes you to think. Hard to think if you have never come close to experiencing anything that is being discussed. Some guidance would be helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless without a Solutions Manual
I'm studying for the CPA. I bought the book because it's required for a course in school. But to actually learn for the CPA exam, I'll toss this one aside for one that provides a solutions manual. Authors who withold the manual for the instructors benefit miss a fundamental point about economics - who the customer is. It's the student that the book is written for and it is the student who pays for the course. Breffni University of Chicago

3-0 out of 5 stars Unavailable Support Book
"Financial Reporting and Analysis" by Revsine, Collins, and Johnson is a well written book, but in my opinion, because of Prentice Hall's unwillingness to publish the Student's Solutions Manual, I cannot recommend this book to those who want to learn, or relearn, on their own, the subject that it teaches.

Part of a student's learning process lies in doing the exercises, problems, and cases at the end of each chapter, but how will a student know if he is solving the problems correctly if there are no means with which to compare his answers to? I have visited the publisher's web site, to see if the Student's Solutions Manual is available, and it is not available.

When I learned introductory managerial accounting, I used "Financial and Managerial Accounting", published by South-Western College (http://www.swcollege.com/front.html), and it contained answers to some of the problems within the textbook. I had to learn managerial accounting on my own without a teacher, and this book made that possible. I still have this book, and I use it for reference purposes.

There is no way I can fully learn intermediate accounting on my own with "Financial Reporting and Analysis" because the Student's Solutions Manual is not available. It is similar to shooting with a rifle at a target and not knowing where your bullets are hitting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wade's best book to date!
Red Light Green Light aka Wall Street Money Machine volume 6 is probably Wade's best book to date. You will learn how to play quarterly earnings and announcements.

With Red Light Green Light you will learn how to take back control of your stock trading from retail stock brokers who simply do not know about the quarterly "newsy-go-around"

Red Light Green Light shows you how, why and when to trade for the best profits using this reporting cycle.

You will learn and benefit from the following topics:

Why No News is bad news

Making Better Trades

Strategies and Attitudes for Succe$$

Increasing Your Powers of Observation

Strategies for Red Light Green Light Periods

Using Red Light Green Light for Cash Flow

Compelling reasons for making trades

Recession Proof investing

and so much more.

I like this book better than Wall Street Vol 1-5 (HINT: I really enjoyed those books as well) This is must reading for all serious investors who are tired of losing money following conventional methods.

Thank you Wade and welcome back.

5-0 out of 5 stars 25%= 1 day return! Thanks Wade....
Using the advice in Red Light Green Light and Wall Street Money Machine #1, I enjoyed a nice 25.91% 1 day return on NTE on a joint post stock split and earnings announcement.

I know that some of Wade's detractors will criticize this review and say this is after the fact. Sorry, I don't have a crystal ball so I can't post trades that I haven't made yet. Besides, no merchant has even refused my business from profits that I have made by trading using Wade's strategies nor has anyone ever refused my credit card, check or cash when then found out how I made a living.

And no one has ever critized my success by saying "it's after the fact."

The reality is that Wade's advice is right on. It works if you follow it.

I highly recommend Red Light Green Light, Wall Street Money Machine #1 and any book writen by Mr. Cook. The advice actually works.

Try it. You'll like it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn how to play earnings profitably
The booki s the best how to book on playing earnings and annoncements. Other than stocks splits, I cannot think of a more predictable or duplicatable way to make money in the markets than during earnings.

You won't find this information anywhere else. Great book Wade. Thanks for sharing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doubled my money in 1 day! Thanks WADE!
Following WADE's advice from his new MUST website, I bought calls on HPQ prior to expected news that Wade had predicted and came true and doubled my money in 1 day! Thanks WADE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best "How-To" Venture Capital Handbook Available
I read and used the first edition of this book in 1983 and since then have used it in raising $27 MM in equity financing for four companies. In addition, it has served as the basis for a short term course in "Raising Equity Capital" for start-up companies. One of the business plans based on this book was regarded as "one of the best seen" by VC companies around the country. I highly recommend it for the novice and the professional.

3-0 out of 5 stars Plain-English primer for Main Street audience
Rather than Silicon Valley technopreneurs, this plain-English book is oriented toward Main Street small business operators. Within those confines, the author actually does a diligent job of demystifying the interaction with potential investors, explaining the fundamental process, and breaking down the deal documents into understandable components.

Is this the right book for you? Judge for yourself, from the following excerpts:

- Number 2 on the list of Ten Things Not To Say to a venture capitalist: "Some friends and I ... purchased the franchise to a doughnut operation. I am putting $25,000 of my money into the deal through a second mortage on my house, and my wife and I are going to help operate the doughnut shop."

- Put the financial history in columnar format.

Readers who find such caliber of advice instructive, are taught to negotiate and structure collateralized loans with equity kickers, typically denominated in the hundreds of thousands.

If your needs lie on a different plane, obviously you should look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.
I returned this book for a refund. It contains no more information about the VC business or getting VC funding that can be found on the Internet. It lacks the details about valuations, company structure, business plans, financing and other processes that one needs to understand before starting a company and going for funding. The advice given is so obvious, that one might think the process is easy. Most VC companies provide advice and information on their web sites and this book provides no additional value to what is already present.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic for Entrepreneurs, since 1988...
Not long ago, venture capital was a cottage industry and little information was available for entrepreneurs to get prepared prior to raising capital from VC firms. Gladstone was among the first authors to demystify Venture Capital and explain the process step by step, in plain English.

Although sometimes superficial, this book is a classic (which justifies the 4th star). Since 1988, it has been a good introduction to the venture capital process written for entrepreneurs. Over the years, many venture capital colleagues borrowed it from my bookshelves too.

Whether your are an entrepreneur in the US or in Europe, the process it describes is fundamentally what you are going to face.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Book -- One of the best when you need to raise VC
This one of the best VC books you can own. If you are serious about raising money, this book has to be in your library.

The author is obviously the real thing, and not someone that decided to jump on the bandwagon of writing a book on a hot subject.

The advice is great, and to the point. I especially like the part on "brokers". I know too many people that have been burned by these "experts". The book flows nicely, and gets you to really start thinking about your business. Even if you don't follow the format for you final plan, his outline will make you examine parts of your business you might not otherwise have thought about.

If you are serious about approaching Venture Capitalist, I would recommend hitting the "add to cart" button. You won't be disapointed.

If you find most accounting guides as complex as accounting itself, you'lllove this itty-bitty guide, full of practical techniques that show you how to analyze financial statements, interpret financial data, and measurebusiness performance. On every page, clear text and illustrations cover eachaspect of accounting principles and practices, while simple checklists enableyou to calculate ratios, identify creative accounting, and make soundfinancial decisions. And throughout, accessible charts and diagrams explore different options for financial planning and forecasting. Granted, if you're looking forspecific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do just fine.

It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisherDorling-Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty books onbusiness and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, anddecision-making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies series' talent forbreaking down a lot of information into bite-sized bits and sidebars withDorling-Kindersley's signature, crisp graphics on agleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of businessthinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective.

Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-readpages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracialcast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of theday, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last fewpages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they'reperfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute, and look so smart in a neat little stack or row, thatyou'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire department or staff. --Timothy Murphy ... Book Description

Although introductions to courses in finance exist for a variety of fields, Robert W. Kaps provides the first text to address the subject from an aviation viewpoint. Relying on his vast experience-twenty-plus years in the airline industry and more than thirty years in aviation-Kaps seeks not only to prepare students for careers in the aviation field but also to evoke in these students an excitement about the business. Specifically, he shows students how airlines, airports, and aviation are financed. Each chapter contains examples and illustrations and ends with suggested readings and references.

Following his discussion of financial management and accounting procedures, Kaps turns to financial management and sources of financial information. Here he discusses types of business organizations, corporate goals, business ethics, maximizing share price, and sources of financial information.

Kaps also covers debt markets, financial statements, air transport sector revenue generation, and air transport operating cost management, including cost administration and labor costs, fuel, and landing fees and rentals. He describes in depth air transport yield management systems and airport financing, including revenues, ownership, operations, revenue generation, funding, allocation of Air Improvement Program funds, bonds, and passenger facility charges.

Kaps concludes with a discussion of the preparation of a business plan, which includes advice about starting and running a business. He also provides two typical business plan outlines. While the elements of fiscal management in aviation follow generally accepted accounting principles, many nuances are germane only to the airline industry. Kaps provides a basic understanding of the principles that are applicable throughout the airline industry. ... Read more

"I found the format and delivery very clean and straightforward. This is a wonderful blend of factual information interwoven with savory, practical commentary. This book should be sold with post-it notes, highlighters, and a red pen because any reader/user will want to go back often to utilize the content. It may be more appropriate to refer to this publication as a map or a tool because it guides the user to completion of a task that is usually more like a journey or a project."

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Every starting researcher in accounting
In eleven chapter and 241 pages, Malcolm Smith aims to provide an insider's view of the research process, by focusing on actual choices made in the conduct of accounting research projects, together with a realistic perception of what might go wrong, even with careful planning. The overall aim of the book is to facilitate the conduct of applied research studies in accounting. It takes a practical approach which takes the reader from initiating of the research idea, over developing the conceptual model, identifying theory and literature, developing a specification of hypotheses and collecting and analyzing to the ultimately publishing of the research findings.

The clearly defined structure and smooth writing style help to convey the message. It is furthermore very accessible due to its broad perspective and practical approach. The reader gets a clear overview of the sequence of steps that need to be undertaken to come to a successful publication. Throughout the book, he is made aware of potential pitfalls that he may encounter, and to some extent how to solve them. Practical examples illustrate the theory, making the whole more understandable. The main contribution the book makes to the reader is that it shows how to identify and define research problems and prepare strategies for their solution, how to review existing research and how to offer critiques of articles. In addition, ethical constraints on the conduct of accounting research are discussed.

There are however some drawbacks. A choice had to be made between a broad, extensive perspective and a detailed, intensive perspective. The author discusses for example the most frequently used statistical techniques, without really discussing solutions to statistical problems that may occur. Hence, the book may serve as a guideline to (starting) researchers, clarifying the several steps that need to be undertaken. Other, more specific, literature will however be needed to solve problem to concrete problems.
