Book Description

June Walker tackles the most vexing problems facing the self-employed: bad recordkeeping and tax ignorance. Her solutions are simple, quick and audit proof: a recordkeeping method that works and a guide through the tax maze that ends with more money in the indie's pocket and less money going to Uncle Sam.

The self-employed operate under various names -- sole proprietors, freelancers, subcontractors, free agents, independent professionals - but the IRS and other taxing authorities require all of them to follow the same rules. If self-employed people don't understand tax and recordkeeping fundamentals, they will eventually gum up the works, and the remedy will be expensive, time-consuming, worrisome, and possibly fatal to their businesses - no matter how talented, motivated and entrepreneurial they are.

The author creates characters such as wedding photographer Billy Bridesnapper and the clueless CPA Sammy Segar to illustrate situations based on the real experiences of her clients. Through these examples told in clear, crisp and simple prose she explains the complete range of tax and recordkeeping basics - like how to prove to the IRS that the endeavor is a business not a hobby, how start-up costs differ from other deductions, how to go snorkeling and still deduct travel expenses, why a gift to mom can be a legitimate business deduction, why solos needn't worry about the difference between income and a reimbursement, how to make estimated tax payments, the structure and advantages of sole proprietorship, and hundreds of vital details about taxes, finances, and recordkeeping.

Armed with June's unique copyrighted worksheets designed just for the indie, her system takes only a few hours a year to implement, and saves time, anxiety and stress. Even the beginner who has never kept business records can easily learn it. Self Employed Tax Solutions explains how not to miss one single business deduction, how to pay the least tax legitimately possible and how to keep records so that accounting and tax preparer fees are reduced.

Self-Employed Tax Solutions is not written for dummies but for bright, intelligent people who don't understand the business side of their solo ventures. It's the one indispensable book that self-employed people need to survive and to succeed in a business environment where the tax laws and regulations are structured not for them but for corporations and employees.

5-0 out of 5 stars CFROI explains stock prices better than P/E ratios
Best finance book I have read in years!

The book is a quick read and does a terrific job of explaining the investment framework employed by institutional portfolio managers world-wide. CFROI brings the concept of return on invested capital to a more robust level by providing the investor with a greater understanding of stock price movement and valuation.

This book is a must read if you expect to outperform the market. The increased complexity of accounting rules over the last decade has forced investors to apply an analysis process focused on a company's future cash flows. The accuracy of the CFROI valuation framework places traditional analysis and EVA at the bottom of the investor's toolbox. CFROI can help you avoid value trap stocks and step up to high PE stocks who are expected to create wealth for their shareholders.

5-0 out of 5 stars The millenium stock selection model
Madden's text substitutes empirical fact for academic claptrap, clearing away the underbrush of neat-though-erroneous theories like CAPM and EVA, giving the conscientious professional and serious amateur a meticulous roadmap to superior understanding and investment returns. Or in Madden's words, "The employment of CAPM/beta and related procedures has become a ritual due not to empirical usefulness, but to its mathematical elegance - the touchstone of mainstream academic corporate finance." The justification for CFROIs demanding discipline is demonstrated early in the text in an example, wherein the past real record of a hypothetical firm with a stable 6.5 % ROI is converted into GAAP accounting numbers from which an ROI series is calculated. In re the accounting-based return history, Madden asks, "Who referring to (the chart) would not be misled about a firm's performance relying on the (ROI gyrating between + 24% and -10%) while the economic performance did not vary?" In short, if you don't know the facts, you can't solve the mystery. The predictive and interpretive powers of the system's valuation metric is the result of plain hard work, not the magical properties of some lazy man's statistical dowsing rod like Earnings Momentum. Last widely employed during the Tulip Craze of an earlier century, Earnings Momentum is based on the dubious concept that as long as accounting earnings, surreal and manipulable though they be, go up, the stock should go up as fast as it does go up, unless earnings don't go up as fast as expected, in which case we've been disappointed, so it's not worth anything until the bookies can reestablish the odds. Had we all expended the necessary effort on CFROI, we might have anticipated or at least understood to our financial benefit and peace of mind: IBM problems in the mid-80s to mid-90s that led to a restructuring; Wal-Mart's staggering gait beginning in the late 80's that produced unsatisfactory price action in the early 90's; Hewlett Packard's defiance of gravity in maintaining an exceptional internal rate of return; ditto Abbot Labs, Hershey and Wrigley's outperforming the market; the rebound of Analog Devices and the volatility of Advanced Micro Devices; and so on and on. The CFROI knowledge system dissects the firm and the value creation process, meticulously separating the past and present from the nebulous future, thereby establishing a mathematical basis for professional investment decision making. The CFROI valuation model applies dividend discount technique to inflation-adjusted cash flow growth projections, using a firm-specific risk premium plus the market-required rate of return to determine the firms warranted value and the equity's warranted price. CFROI resolves two fundamental equity valuation issues: the recognized fallibility of the Capital Asset Pricing Model and the inherent inconstancy of accounting data. The former supplying a counter-intuitive cost of capital or required rate of return; the other concealing the real prospects of the firm's wealth creating efforts. As the lengthy flow charts detailing the process required to turn accounting hash into economic reality attest, CFROI is not a black box of unexplained miracles. It's a sweatshop equipped with empirically-proven, high tech tools which give the driven amateur and dedicated professional the means to outrun the herd. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Payroll Resource
I think this is a good beginner-to-intermediate level book about payroll. While I doubt this book can serve as your only source to setting up a payroll system (a claim never made by the author), it can serve as a valuable guide to implementing or reviewing your current payroll internal controls, best practices and payroll policy manual. It may also help you analyze whether you are paying too much money or spending too much time on your job costing system. If you like examples, the author uses many short case studies to clarify his main points.

He keeps the book up-to-date by discussing topics such as payroll information technology, current payment alternatives and Internet references. He discusses other issues in detail, such as fringe benefits, vacation pay, minimum wage laws, payroll calculations, retirement plans, and stock option plans.

Given the popularity of outsourcing the payroll function, I think the book could have went into more detail about how to select the right payroll outsource vendor and how to ensure that the outsource vendor maintains proper internal controls (e.g. obtaining an annual SAS 70 Type II). Also, I felt I could have skipped the payroll tax portion and read IRS publication 15, 15a and 15b and my state's corresponding payroll tax publication. Finally, to help improve the books longevity, the author could have either left out the current year tax rates and limitations altogether or listed Internet references where the current and future rates and limitations could be referenced.

Nevertheless, overall I think this is a good book that I will use from time to time to brush up on my payroll process knowledge. Therefore, I think the book is worth buying, reading and referencing. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I can't wait to re-sell this book
This book is not for beginners! The exercises in the textbook are difficult to follow because they don't provide much examples in the chapters. Also, important topics are briefly discussed. However, I enjoyed reading the case studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful
I used this study guide and received a 3.9 out of 4.0 in this class. This is a great study guide and I would recommend getting one as it will definitely improve your grades in a very important class.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT A GOOD BOOK FOR INTRO TO FINANCIAL ACCT !
The book's preface indicates "We assume the students has had no prior exposure to accounting and financial statements, and has had little exposure to the business world". Hah! As I read through this book, I honestly believe these authors (professional CPAs) had completely forgot who their target audiences were.

If this is a required textbook for your class, I highly suggest looking into a good supplemental book. Good luck.

3-0 out of 5 stars average
i realize that a review of a textbook is somewhat of a moot point. after all, you have to buy the book that the professor tells you to buy. but, here it is anyway:

the book was average in every sense of the word. the one thing i did not like about it was that it did not highlight every new word or phrase and define it. only about half of the new words or phrases were highlighted in a text box next to the paragraph. this means that if you were searching for a word or phrase, if it was not noted in the margin, then it was very difficult to find it. this is fairly typical of textbooks, so i figured it was average.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This book is really great. A must have for those interested in Accounting. I own the book and had classes with Professor Libby. He really knows what he's talking about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A gold mine of new information
I've been a trader for about ten years and have spent thousands of dollars on trading books - most of which have proven to have little or no useful content. That's certainly not the case with this book of Connie Brown's which provides alot of new thinking about indicators/oscillators and how we view and actually use them. More importantly the reader is challenged to think about what their favorite indicator is actually telling them at any point in time. Her discussion of the information a plain vanilla 14 period RSI can actually divulge is, in itself, well worth the price. The work on price projection and targets is extremely useful and has had a major positive impact on my trading. As an added bonus, the author shares some new indicators of her own creation and provides the reader with the "easy language" code for TradeStation.

There's an awful lot of information in this book and it does take some time to digest. I've found something new and worthwhile every time I pick it up. You will definitely not find a re-hash of the same old stuff. Highly recommended!

2-0 out of 5 stars A Teaser Not a Pleaser
This book promises to take you into the Promised Land of traderdom but leaves you in the desert. It's up to you to find the water. The author may give you some pointers as to where you might find it but you may easily die of thirst trying to get there.

At best, this an introduction to the author's trading methodology. It broadly covers her different techniques: Elliot Wave used in conjunction with oscillators, Fibonacci price projections and retracements, Gann time and price analysis, reverse engineering of indicators to project price. Sounds good doesn't it? Well don't hold your breath. The author keeps the secret of the Holy Grail to herself. If you want the answers, you will have to take her seminars or subscribe to her service.

Just to give you a sense of what I mean: One chapter is entitled "Price Projections by Reverse-Engineering Indicators". You get four pages of excruciating detail on how to export into excel, but when it comes to how she actually reverse engineers the indicator she writes, "Just know that some reverse-engineering projections require you to know the indicator formula and to have Excel generate the results, rather than just plugging in the indicator values from Trade station." How does she do it? She hired professional programmers to do it for her. Yes, that's all very well but then what do we need the book for and why are we paying her? Then there is the infamous Composite Index indicator so essential to her system. It has been repeatedly commented on in the other reviews here. She repeatedly promises to discuss the formula in various parts of the book and a whole chapter is devoted to it. The author writes, "By now you are probably trying to find the formula for the Composite Index". No such luck. Instead, you get, "Forgive my inconveniencing you, but look toward the Aerodynamic Investments Web site... for the outcome of this sticky dilemma." What a tease!

And those aren't the only secret keys she keeps. In the chapter on Gann you find that all the wisdom of Gann is useless for trading indexes unless you possess certain secret conversion factors unknown by the general public, but which were revealed in some letters of Gann possessed by a friend of the Author. These documents were mysteriously destroyed upon his death. "All my attempts to acquire them or to have them preserved failed.," she writes. At any rate she's not revealing the conversion factors.

Later she writes, "While the revelation that a conversion factor is used will understandably discourage some of you from going further and tempt you to skip the remaining chapter..." and then tries to lure you in with "So hang in there as this discussion has only scratched the surface. Besides, aren't you curious about the fourth dimension within the pyramid that I passed over so quickly in the beginning of this chapter? Good. Thought that might work. Onward." But all the reader gets on the pyramid is three scanty sentences in a paragraph in which the author states that there are three dimensions in a Pyramid. But hold your horses, there is also a fourth dimension: time. "It is Gann's Master Calculator or Square of 52," the author states. This fourth dimension can be derived from the Pyramid, but here the author leaves you ruminating once again this time about how to divine the mystical qualities of the Pyramid. You will never know.

Ah, but isn't that why we bought the book in the first place, to find out what we will never know? Don't think to transgress the portals of the Temple of Giseh.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure for Traders
Hands down, this is my best trading literature VALUE. Just one chapter supported a significant increase in my trading.

Its deep, but so was the first 2 calculus courses in engineering school. If its too advanced for you now, better buy it while its still available. The better trading books seem to go out of print quickly (?).

Constance reveals more of her successful trading than most authors that show how to trade from the middle of the chart. I also appreciate the most robust trading software ever made was used with coding examples, TS2000i.

Thanks Connie!

5-0 out of 5 stars For the serious trader only
I have been trading for the past 5 years. I am always looking for new ways to look at the market and hone my technical skills. This book is designed to help you think outside the box and look at what the market is telling us in new ways. She disects the RSI & Stochastics like noone else. Shows the reader how to produce fibonacci price projection and retracement clusters and how to use both RSI and Stochastics to do this also. The Elliott Wave Chapter is a real time day-by-day analysis over the summer of '98 using RSI & Stoch oscillators. She introduces the reader to Gann. And talks about cycles. I could go on. Just get the book if you're serious about trading.

A thousand extra words were used for each "concept". I was suckered into trying out her service after being deferred to her website for all the "good stuff". I paid [$$$] for a quarter for what I now see is false advertising and I honestly have never seen someone make so many bad observations and be so wrong over any 3 month time frame. I've seen amateurs make more consistent calls at yahoo.

A total shame that she holds back all the stuff that she claims works best, but clearly can't even analyze the markets in real time. A pitiful fleecing of the public with outrageous claims in the book and at her site. ... Read more

Book Description

"The authors have provided an interesting and helpful resource to understand and manage the nonprofit organization's investments. I believe that this book should be in the library of all nonprofit practitioners that are concerned about prudent stewardship."
-Jim Croft, PhD, Vice President, Finance and Administration The Field Museum (Chicago, Illinois)
"This book is a straightforward, well-written guide to the strategies and administration of investment assets of nonprofit institutions. It relies on the principles of modern portfolio theory in emphasizing asset diversification, performance measurement, and careful manager selection. It debunks much of what passes for 'investment advice' in the popular media. To their credit, the authors describe the challenges, factors, and actors in the investment industry, from the perspective of the individuals and committees charged by nonprofit institutions swith investment oversight responsibility."
-John E. Allerson, Senior Vice President, Finance and Operations and Chief Financial Officer, Roosevelt University (Chicago, Illinois)
"I would consider this book 'Investments 101' for anyone who deals with overseeing investments of a company, whether it is a profit or nonprofit. Yet, at the same time, it would help all investors, small or large, in dealing with their own individual portfolios. DiMeo, Schneider, Benoit, et al. have organized the book in such a way that each chapter deals with the very essence of how to structure an investment portfolio and how to look at the complex environment in an easy way."
-Kevin Higdon, Vice President of Finance Elkhart General Hospital (Elkhart, Indiana)
"From modern portfolio theory to the role of the fiduciary, The Practical Guide to Managing Nonprofit Assets provides trustees of nonprofit funds with a chapter-by-chapter explanation of what they should know to carry out their responsibilities. For the uninitiated, it creates a foundation for understanding investing in a difficult environment. For the experienced, it serves as a checklist of issues to be considered in exercising appropriate investment oversight."

Book Description

'Shareholder Value' presents a powerful and useful toolkit of market-based perspectives, analytic approaches, valuation techniques, and specific financial metrics for use in everyday business life.

The author helps a broad spectrum of professionals understand the salient points and real world implications of a 'value management' movement which has taken hold in many corporations in the United States and around the world. This movement is being supported by some of the major institutional investors who influence financial markets.

The main goal of 'Shareholder Value' is to help working professionals grasp the concept of value 'creators' and 'destroyers', along with the implications. He also provides tools to measure the success (or failure) of major strategic and operational initiatives and enables corporate managers to understand how shareholder value is created, and then directs behaviour toward 'value-based' planning and action.

Although mainly aimed at the professional market, 'Shareholder Value' will also be of use to students of business and finance as it is intended to provide a comprehensive foundation for important elements of business strategy and acquisition valuation, corporate financial analysis, capital investments, corporate financing and economic value based metrics.

AUTHOR'S REVIEW:

When developing this book, I strived to achieve the following:

* Provide the finance professional and student of finance with a comprehensive template of shareholder value concepts and techniques - geared toward use in a corporate setting.
* Give the non-financial professional an understanding of the underpinnings and behavioural aspects of economic value management.
* Outline and provide details of an effective process for implementing a value-based financial performance system within a corporation.
* ...And, combine learning with enjoyable reading by presenting technical material through a story.

The "story" and "characters" are unique features of Shareholder Value - A Business Experience. The reader can get an appreciation of the environment surrounding value-based management, along with challenges that arise when transitioning from traditional "accounting" performance (where earnings and earnings per share reign supreme) to "economic" performance (where cash flow and return on investment are emphasized).Characters occupying operating and staff roles have been created to represent people that those working inside companies (large, medium and small) may encounter and, also, to invoke some humour.Insights into how to function in different corporate roles can be gained by following the characters through the story.

Presents a combination of analysis and case study in which a strong technical treatment is blended with a fictional case study to offer clarity and explanation
A practical and effective implementation process for a comprehensive financial performance system
Offers a perspective of the role of different corporate and business unit functions in the implementation of value-based financial performance within a company
