Book Description

There is no universally accepted definition of a currency crisis, but most would agree that they all involve one key element: investors fleeing a currency en masse out of fear that it might be devalued, in turn fueling the very devaluation they anticipated. Although such crises--the Latin American debt crisis of the 1980s, the speculations on European currencies in the early 1990s, and the ensuing Mexican, South American, and Asian crises--have played a central role in world affairs and continue to occur at an alarming rate, many questions about their causes and effects remain to be answered. In this wide-ranging volume, some of the best minds in economics focus on the historical and theoretical aspects of currency crises to investigate three fundamental issues: What drives currency crises? How should government behavior be modeled? And what are the actual consequences to the real economy?

Reflecting the latest thinking on the subject, this offering from the NBER will serve as a useful basis for further debate on the theory and practice of speculative attacks, as well as a valuable resource as new crises loom.

Book Description

Rudiger Dornbusch's articles on exchange rates and open economy macroeconomics are among the most frequently cited in the field of international economics. Collected for the first time in Exchange Rates and Inflation, these articles, written over the past fifteen years, cover a wide range of issues while providing unique insights into the research style of a major economist. During this period the economics profession has shifted from global monetarism to the new classical economics, and Dornbusch's own interests, and some of his beliefs, have changed as well.

Twenty two articles are gathered in four parts: Exchange Rate Theory; Special Topics in Exchange Rate Economics; Equilibrium Real Exchange Rates, and Inflation and Stabilization. Each part includes an introduction that discusses the essays and places them in context.

Rudiger Dornbusch is Ford International Professor of Economics at MIT

Book Description

Widely considered the crowning achievement in the history of international monetary relations, the classical gold standard (1880- 1914) has long been treated like a holy relic. Its veneration, however, has done more to obscure than to reveal the actual nature of the era's monetary system. In The Anatomy of an International Monetary Regime, Giulio M. Gallarotti addresses the nature of the classical gold standard in its international context, offering the first comprehensive and systematic treatment of the subject.

Three fundamental questions are essential to the discussion: How did the regime originate? How did it work? Why did it persist? Gallarotti uses an interdisciplinary approach that draws upon politics, economics, and ideology to explain the answers. He challenges traditional assumptions about the period, arguing that cooperation among nations or central banks was not a principal factor in either the origin or stability of the system, and that neither the British state nor the Bank of England were the leaders or managers of the gold standard. Rather, a decentralized process involving the status of gold, industrialization and economic development, the politics of gold, and liberal economic ideology provided converging incentives for starting and maintaining the system.

Gallarotti's study presents the most comprehensive and interdisciplinary examination available of the nature of monetary relations in the four decades before World War I. His important, revisionist view will alter the way we think about a crucial period in the growth of the international monetary system. It will be essential reading for scholars and students of economic history and policy. ... Read more

Book Description

Global Business Today has become an established text in the International Business market for its excellent, but concise coverage of the key global issues including the cultural context for global business, cross-border trade and investment, the global monetary system and competition in the global environment. GBT’s concise chapters give a general introduction to international business – emphasizing the environmental factors, with less coverage of operations.

Charles Hill is renowned for his attention to research trends and that is evident in GBT through a variety of real world examples and cases from small, medium, and large companies throughout the world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good inexpensive text for International Business
I use this as a text for an undergrad capstone course in International Business Strategy. Hill is co-author of a fine Strategic Management text, and much of the treatment in that text is evident here.

The underlying economic arguments for firm behavior in their international and global activities are well presented. I ask my students to look over the concepts presented in this text, and then apply them to HBS case studies we discuss together in class.

Compared to alternative texts on interntional/global strategy from George Yip (Global Strategy 2/E), or either of two from Bartlett and Ghoshal (Managing across Borders, 2/E, or Multinational Management), this one is more digestible for undergrads (vs. the MBA or other grad level courses these other texts appear to be targeting). It also makes a nice text for Intro to International Business undergrad courses.

If you can order the text without the CD-ROM (unless you want to assign an international business plan, of course), all the better.

For an overview of IB with grounding in the economics/strategy vein, there are few better texts. This one is also better value for the money than most out there, which your students will thank you for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lack of recent data
The book covers nearly all subjects under globalization. In the first part, it describes the environment of global enterprise. In the second part, it discusses about strategies. The examples given in the book are good and specific for the subject. However they are not the recent ones. In such a fast growing business environment, the examples should be much more recent. The most recent ones are from 1994. For example it only covers Asian crisis in the postscript. Therefore I would recommend a book which has recent data and examples in it. ... Read more

Book Description

This volume explores the consumer perspectives of the introduction of the Euro. In 1996, the European Commission set up a Euro Working Group, which brought together all the families of consumers' associations and is responsible for providing the Commission with reasoned opinions on consumer policies and measures. In 1997, they were joined by a team of psychologists, sociologists and experts in people's attitudes to money, of various nationalities. Their task was to take a closer look at all the psychosociological issues related to the Euro and, wherever possible, to draw practical conclusions about the measures to be taken in order to facilititate the changover to the Euro for the various population groups. The task had to be organised in such a way as to answer three questions: 1. What is the changeover to the euro? 2. What is a currency? 3. What is a consumer? The inter-disciplinary group of experts tackled this whole gamut of problems and issues. Their work, in cooperation with the commission's departments (the Directorate-General for Consumer Policy, DGXXIV) and the Euro Working Group of the Consumer Committee, considerably influenced the decisions of the Community authorities. The dossier presented here is an edited selection of the reports prepared by members of this group, covering the reports on an extremely wide range of questions. All these reports are available from DGXXIV. Furthermore, this book contains the main sections of the report prepared by the Euro Working Group of the Consumer Committee, which served as an important point of departure for the experts' work and is repeatedly referred to in their articles. ... Book Description

With the persistent instability of international financial markets, emerging economies are exploring new ways to reduce exposure to capital flow volatility. Some analysts argue that financially open economies are best served by more flexible regimes, while others argue in favor of extreme exchange rate regimes that have a strong commitment to a fixed parity or dispense with an independent currency. The successful launch of the euro has made more realistic the prospect of replacing a national currency with a strong foreign one. Recent examples include the adoption of the US dollar by Ecuador and El Salvador.

The introduction of a foreign currency as sole legal tender, termed full (de jure) dollarization, has been the center of much political and academic debate. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the issues from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. The topics discussed include the role of balance sheet effects, the linkage between currency risk and country risk, the impact of dollarization on trade, financial integration and credibility, the implications of dollarization for the lender of last resort, and the institutional and political economy aspects of dollarization.

5-0 out of 5 stars good and unbiased intro to a much politicized topic
As opposed to most of the literature on the topic (de jure/formal/full dollarization Salvadorean style; NOT de facto financial dollarization that characterizes many developing countries), this volume succeeds in presenting a balanced compendium of papers that summarizes the main issues, informing the reader without trying to sell a particular option. The Primer is particularly helpful for dollarization curious policy makers and economist without an emerging market orientation. While briefing on the contents of the different chapters of the volume, it tackles a number of diverse and related topics, ranging from old-style optimum currency area criteria to modern-style developing-coutries-cannot-manage-their-own-currency type of arguments (the so called monetary credibility argument), to non-economical political considerations, always avoiding easy simplifications of generalizations. For that reason, it may read as a little derivative sometimes, but a second reading and a long reference list provides a fairly comprehensive unbiased introduction that is difficult to find elsewhere. For those whose want more, the chapters elaborate on particular themes discussed in the introductory primer. The language is as diverse as the authors of the papers, going from an analytical presentation of the credibility-flexibility tradeoff by Chang and Velasco to a down-to-earth step by step guide for a prospective dollarizer by Gruber and co-authors, to a descriptive account of the political aspects by Frieden. All in all, a nice introduction for the lay and an up to date reference book for the initiated. (True, papers can be downloaded, some even in the final version, from the Internet. But this happens to be the rule rather than the exception in these days. At least, MIT Press has done an unexpectedly creative job with the cover.)

Table of content:
1. Dollarization: A premier
2. Dollarization: Analytical issues
3. Using balance sheet data to identify sovereign default and devaluation risk
4. Dollarization and the lender of last resort
5. Measuring costs and benefits of dollarization: An application of Central Americana and Caribbean countries
6. Dollarization: The link between devaluation and default risk
7. Implementation guidelines for dollarization and monetary unions
8. The political economy of dollarization: Domestic and international factors

Most of these old papers (from the academic time line) can be downloaded from Internet for free by searching from google.com, for example. These days Economics books by MIT Press tend to collect old papers and keep the table of content secret. What a good strategy. ... Read more
