5-0 out of 5 stars Classic!
This book is a classic. A "must read" for anybody in management. This wisdom is timeless!

Dr. Michael Beitler
Author of "Strategic Organizational Change"

5-0 out of 5 stars You have to "hear" it from the horse's mouth.
If you're journeying through management literature of the present day, you're bound to come across the two theories proposed by Douglas McGregor back in the '50s and early '60's: Theory X and Theory Y. In fact, you'll probably find that some of the more modern theories and human behavior models are based on this work by McGregor.

This is what makes reading this book so valuable. Reading the attributes and studies about Theory X and Theory Y management styles in McGregor's own words, instead of a one or two line sentence concerning his theories in another book, is well worth the price of this book.

The book was compelling because many of the attributes of today's managers, and organizations in general, can STILL be applied to either Theory X or Theory Y management types! In fact, much of the literature today suggests that companies with a Theory Y mindset are surviving better today than Theory X companies. The supporting information McGregor provides to each theory suggests, again even today, that these two themes will be prevalent in society for years to come.

Having this book in your professional library will provide you with some good insight and historical reference to modern day theories. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars True management classic which will remain influential
This book, written in 1960, is one of the true management classics, one of the greatest and most influential management books of the past century. McGregor describes Theory X and Theory Y, two fundamentally different ways managers view their employees. McGregor describes Theory X as the dominant view: people ar seem as lazy, not very capable, unwilling to work (unless you make them work), opportunistic and prepared to deceive (providing they think they won't be caught). Theory Y views people in a much more positive way: they are seen as intrinsically motivated, willing to work and basically honest. Now the essential point: the way you view people determines the way you treat them and the way you interpret their behavior, which determines the way they will respond to you, which in turn will reinforce the way you view(ed) them. In other words: both Theory X and Theory Y are true because they create their own reality! They are self-fulfilling prophecies. If you have a choice, what do you choose? This book, written many years ago, is still an interesting read and I think you can still read it in 2060 and find it relevant and interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Work Of Genius, Idealism
McGregor really elevates management to a higher plane: this book is at least as good and important as James McGregor Burns' "Leadership." The book is a treatise against traditional command and control management: it is an optimistic book, buoyant with ideas on how even non-management is capable of creativity and self-direction (I refer here to the influence of Abraham Maslow's ideas on his work). I couldn't help but be wowed by McGregor's faith in common workers (one of his ideas is that employees should evaluate themselves, for instance, instead of getting evaluated by superiors). In essence the book is summed up in his sentence: "The distintive potential contribution of the human being . . . at every level of the organization, stems from his capacity to think, to plan, to exercise judgement, to be creative, to direct and control his own behavior" (114). Is every worker like this? Probably not, but it was refreshing to read someone who thought so. Those who enjoyed this book would also like John Gardner's "On Leadership."

5-0 out of 5 stars Let people find reward in their work without gimmickry.
This book changed my life. I assumed I was lazy because I didn't like my work. McGregor helped me to see that I wasn't simply mercenary in my attitude toward work. He posits that each person can discover an almost hidden potential for satisfaction at work that will drive the individual to heights of achievement that are as intrinsically satisfying and remunerative to him/her as they are, of course, to the employer. I used to preserve a status quo and just mouth agreement to get along. I was unhappy because work didn't satisfy latent higher order achievement goals which I think I had subjugated through fear. Regardless of this personal scenario, what I think McGregor provides are key clues and methods for creating an environment in which the fear of offering ideas goes away. There are key pychological/environmental conditions which give rise to people who begin offering ideas and personal investment that they previously could never believe were possible. Read this book if you are hungry to have your people discover their strengths and begin to use them. Read this book if you are wondering what its going to take for you personally to buy into what your company is doing. I would rather be the janitor at NASA who believes his efforts are putting a man on the moon than an executive who has lost vision for what his company is doing. ... Read more

Book Description

"Mitford's funny and unforgiving book is the best memento mori we are likely to get.It should be updated and reissued each decade for our spiritual health."--The New York Review of Books

Only the scathing wit and searching intelligence of Jessica Mitford could turn an exposé of the American funeral industry into a book that is at once deadly serious and side-splittingly funny. When first published in 1963 this landmark of investigative journalism became a runaway bestseller and resulted in legislation to protect grieving families from the unscrupulous sales practices of those in "the dismal trade."

Just before her death in 1996, Mitford thoroughly revised and updated her classic study. The American Way of Death Revisited confronts new trends, including the success of the profession's lobbyists in Washington, inflated cremation costs, the telemarketing of pay-in-advance graves, and the effects of monopolies in a death-care industry now dominated by multinational corporations. With its hard-nosed consumer activism and a satiric vision out of Evelyn Waugh's novel The Loved One, The American Way of Death Revisited will not fail to inform, delight, and disturb.

"Brilliant--hilarious--A must-read for anyone planning to throw a funeral in their lifetime."--New York Post

"Witty and penetrating--it speaks the truth."--The Washington Post

5-0 out of 5 stars How can death be sooo funny?
Leave it to Jessica Mitford, who died in 1996, to make the subject of death and the American funeral industry so hilarious. First published to huge acclaim in 1963, The American Way of Death was revised and updated by Mitford, who nearly finished it by the time she died. Her lawyer husband, Robert Treuhaft, completed it with the help of some research assistants. Even a quick and cursory read of this book will make you take out a membership in the Neptune Society as a preemptive strike against high-pressure tactics of funeral home directors to get people (caught as their weakest as they are grieving over someone's death) to spend, spend, spend "to honor the memory of your dearly departed."
Mitford was known as the Original Muckraker for her habit of always speaking the truth, calling a spade a spade, and for probing into the cozy relationship between politicians, morticians, monopolistic ownership policies, the FTC, and federal lobbyists.
Interesting, updated, still drop dead (pun intended) funny, endlessly informative, witty and well-written with refreshing bluntness, The American Way of Death once again deserves to be read by everyone. And there's a terrific and informative appendix at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for All of Us!
Having lived half my life in the US and half in the UK, I was aware of fundamental differences in practices surrounding death and funeral rituals. Mitford's book provides a useful historical context with a biting criticism of the funeral industry's emotional and financial exploitation of the American public. It's baffling that such a consumer-wise nation could have such a huge blind spot when it comes to the one service which we will ALL use at some time. Depressingly, the mega funeral corporations are making their moves into the British and other world wide funeral markets -- with seemingly little opposition. In any case, I just hope I don't expire during my next visit to the US!

"The American Way of Death Revisited" provides a wealth of information, presented in a tactful and witty manner, to prepare anyone for "battle" with the funeral industry in the event of a loved one's death. It is clear and thorough without being ghoulish or flippant.

Read it now before you need it!

1-0 out of 5 stars nothing but anti-business propaganda
While Mitford claims that funeral directors prey on and profit from the grief of survivors, she, like most so-called muckrakers, preyed on and profited from the fears of ignorant consumers who would believe anything in print. She was an anti-business communist and proud of it. I have no issue with that. I have issue, however, with the fact that she employed her own political and economic beliefs in the service of scandalizing and vilifying an entire industry, which by and large is populated with good, hard-working individuals who provide a service that very few would be willing to provide. Her anti-business rhetoric (in this "revisited" version as well as in the original) works only because death itself is a sensitive subject. So, naturally, to make a living providing a funeral service is considered taking advantage of greiving people. Interesting. Do your local grocers -- let alone the supermarkets that are owned by large multinational corporations -- take advantage of you when they make their living from your basic need to eat? Aren't they exploiting the needs of those who would otherwise starve? See this for what it is: Communist, anti-business rhetoric built into a muckraking style of journalism that can only be seen as the predecessor of our ridiculous nightly news and their scare tactics: "Next on your local news . . . Ten things in your kitchen that can kill you!" If you have to read this flippant, unfunny, fairly scatterbrained book, do so with the same skepticism with which it was supposedly written.

1-0 out of 5 stars Revisited??
This book is incredibly biased. So many things have changed in the funeral industry since the sixties, why did Mrs. Mitford fail to recognize this in her revisited edition? Do not believe everything you read, the funeral industry is not evil. Also, when Mrs. Mitford expired she ironically had an enormus funeral! I would not suggest reading this book, it was a waste of my time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The American Way of Death Revisited
Comprehensive and realistic look at an industry that will never go out of business as long as people die. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Review after using Risk Analysis and the Security Survey
I bought the book to use as a reference while doing my very first risk analysis. It helped me a lot with my project. I found it easy to read and use as a reference. I used the format in the book as a guide when writing up the risk analysis I did.

If you haven't done one before and are looking for a good reference guide, this is a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars clear direction on putting together a security survey
I have prepared several security surveys throughout the last couple of years and have always found that they were missing something. Once I started looking through this book I was given clear direction on the useful information required when conducting a security survey.
This book describes all the main sections required for a security review: Scoop of the project, organization assesment and requirements, physical security, internal controls, data system and records, emergency planning, and proprietary information, business impact analysis, survey questionary, etc.
This book goes into details on planning and analysis but does not give detailed techniques on aquireing information or what an effective security system looks like. It assumes the reader has a strong security background and is able to handle the details of investigation, interviewing, testing and evaluation. This book only touches on these topics. ... In a dry fashion, Packard tells the true story of the mighty Hewlett-Packard Company: Twocollege buddies begin a partnership by producing an audio oscillator in a Palo Alto garage in 1938 andwind up 60 years later with a $25-billion-dollar electronics company on their hands. He wraps the book uptidily with a timeline of the company's development milestones. Packard chalks up success to many things, including government contracts during wartime, but mostly to the company's management outlook ("TheHP Way"), which champions openness, honesty, and flexibility throughout the organization. Entrepreneursand technologists alike will be interested in this journey of an American giant. Packard's tone sometimesveers toward the self-congratulatory, but in this case, it somehow seems justified. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Very Simple: The HP Way
Considering that an electrial engineer like David Packard could have written a, boring, detailed account of how he and Bill Hewlett pieced together their very first piece of equipment in the now famous Pal Alto, California garage. This book surprises you with its simple down to earth account of how it all began and how they built this tiny garage shop into the multi billion dollar company that it is today. They did it not only with a strong belief in new and innovative products, but in the people that helped build the company. This simple belief built the foundation into the HP way of corporate greatness.

The book was simply written, but it is this style that allowed me to understand the friendship between David Packard and Bill Hewlett and the corporate culture that they developed at HP. I would recommend this book to anyone that is a manager or executive to benchmark the corporate culture that HP established or applaud yourself if you have already embraced the HP Way. I trully believe, as David Packard and Bill Hewlett did, that you need a strong belief in people to make a company succeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bill and Davids Excellent Adventure
If you thought that companies become admired by magic then think again - or better still, read the book.

Bill Hewlett and David Packard created one of the worlds most admired companies and it has never stopped going from strength to strength, now with the likes of Carly Fiorina who has taken HP forward into the new millenium by going back to HPs roots.

This book describes the start-up HP company and some of the aspects of its rapid growth and global expansion. There's not too much detail in this book but it does make for interesting reading - although the style is rather dry - for someone who holds up HP as a benchmark against which other companies can and should be measured. If you like me, like HP, then buy the book.

Carly Fiorina has been quoted as saying "in this new world we must always remember that technology is only as valuable as the use to which it is put. In the end, technology is ultimately about people." - that, in a nutshell, is the HP Way. Regards,

5-0 out of 5 stars The proper way to manage a company
All major computing companies have a set of myths, legends and facts that collectively form a unique mystique, but that of Hewlitt-Packard(HP) is truly different from the rest. Some of the unusual aspects of that mystique came to the forefront when the merger between HP and Compaq was reaching the final stages. One of the children of a founder launched a lawsuit against the merger because, among other things, it would lead to large number of layoffs, and that was "not the HP way." Good corporate citizenship and care for the workers are fundamental principles laid down and practiced by Bill Hewlitt and David Packard as they grew from a garage to a multi-billion dollar company.
This book is the story of that growth in the words of one of the founders. It is a tale of challenges, management strategies that were and still are unusual, corporate honesty (imagine that as a management strategy), opportunities seen and tenaciously pursued, occasional mistakes, but always remaining focused on success. The strategy of management by walking around is still one of the most successful tactics that can be used to manage people. Even a few minutes spent observing and conversing with an employee can show you more than any above the fray approach could possibly do and is an incredible morale booster for the entire staff.
Over the years, I have heard many of the stories associated with HP, and after a time, began relegating some of them into the area of company "myth." However, after reading this book, I came away even more impressed with Bill Hewlitt and David Packard. Books on how to manage companies are far too numerous to mention and many are thick enough to be of use to a bodybuilder. Small enough to be lifted by a toddler, this book contains more practical knowledge about how to start and manage a company than the majority of the heavyweights.

5-0 out of 5 stars American Dream In Action
Bill Hewlett and David Packard created one of the worlds most admired companies in the world. Today Hewlett-Packard is also well known company in Russia. More than twelve years ago I wrote my first books on the HP Vectra PC/AT compatible machine.

This book is a good overview. Its interesting to read how Hewlett Packard has grown from the little garage workshop (like Apple Computer was created a little later) to the large corporation it is today. This book is a simple, yet profound, guide to cultivating a healthy corporate culture. Extraordinary story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Very good history of HP and what made its success in the early days. David Packard and Bill Hewlett have build a truly amazing organization basically from scratch; this book will outline the major steps that led to this success. A more recent edition with comments on current issues and technological challenges would be very valuable. ... Read more

Book Description

Although some trillion dollars worth of restorative activity is going on in the world annually, it isn’t presently perceived as an industry, or as any kind of whole. Until that happens, it can’t develop and mature as an industry, nor can research be properly focused.

For instance, those who restore streams seldom perceive that they are part of an overall restoration of the watershed, and those who restore watersheds don’t see any connection between themselves and those who restore historic buildings. They don’t consider that they both share the title of "restorationist." On the other hand, those who clear-cut forests feel a connection with those who build new buildings: They both know they are "developers."

The Restoration Economy exposes the previously undocumented trillion dollar global industries that are revitalizing our natural and built environments. A deeply researched, entertaining blend of business, science, and economics, it documents the historic shift from new development to restorative development that defines 21st Century commerce and government. It is written for a broad rage of people, including strategists, community planners, architects, engineers, ecologists, and investors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Restoration Economy will help put a focus on your future
The Restoration Economy, the Greatest New Growth Frontier by Storm Cunningham is a book that bridges the gap between business/ development and conservation/landscape management. Those with a business bent will find that it brings into focus what most of us have seen over the last few decades, a shift is taking place from new development being primary to redevelopment and restoration being primary. It explains a lot about the trends in redevelopment and gives great insights into where business might concentrate as more and more oportunities present themselves to restore the built environment we all live in. Making brownfields and industrial sites more livable; rehabilitating highways and bridges; upgrading water and waste water facilities; rebuilding after wars and natural disasters; and recreating historic sites and structures are all actions of the restoration economy. Cunningham does a superb job of showing how these activities are all pointing us in one direction: making our built environment more livable. But the story does not end there. As a society we are now also heavily involved in the restoration of forests, prairies, farms, wetlands, fisheries, etc, etc, etc. This is because humans have now been everywhere on earth, and almost everywhere that humans have been, we have left a mess that needs to be cleaned up. This provides literally thousands of oportunities for businesses, large and small, to get involved in clean up and restoration. By reading this book, one not only gets a sense of where business will be going in the future, one also gets the sense that as a society it is time to intergrate the management of built and natural environments into one comprehensive whole. This book helps us all understand more completely that the disparate sectors of our economy that have been involved in various phases of restoration now are feeling the pressure of a coming together. The more there is a coming together, the more effective will be the process of making landscapes livable throughout the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Restoration Economy is a Worthwhile Read
Storm Cunningham's The Restoration Economy: The Greatest New Growth Frontier: Immediate & Emerging Opportunities for Businesses, Communities & Investors is a worthwhile read for all. Businesses, unions, economic development leaders, and conservationists will truly find that this book is an exciting introduction to thinking outside the box when it comes to restoration. At last, a strong argument has been made that clearly articulates that restoration is not a "donation" to be given back to society. Indeed, restoration of both built and natural environments can be seen as fee for service and a strong source of economic vitality across the board. As the author points out, not only do communities and the natural environment benefit from restoration, but restoration can provide a strong platform for successful businesses and cutting edge economic development. In a style not unlike that of Paul Hawkin, Storm Cunningham has gifted us with a visionary yet pragmatic perspective of a bureoning Restoration Economy across multiple sectors of our current economy. It is likely that many currently unfamiliar to the promise of restoration such as bussiness, unions, and economic development leaders will find the book a useful tool in providing baseline arguements and understanding. For those already versed in the potential of restoration, this book will only strengthen and further legitimize your own efforts to advance restoration. ... Read more

As a security professional and attorney with more than 30 years of experience, I have used this text in my graduate courses on security case law and security management for more than eight years with more than 400 students at two universities. The clarity of the author's text and the case-based format makes it an ideal text.

However, without a recent update or new edition, the example cases are now sadly out of date. In addition, newer topics in the area of cyber-security and updated laws on the regulation and powers of private security personnel are not addressed in the text.

Use of this text now requires considerable work by the professor to bring in new materials and update nearly twenty years of case law decisions. In fairness to the author, however, I am not aware of any text on this topic that is more useful -- even in today's classrooms.

5-0 out of 5 stars K-Mart Law (i.e. The Rentacop's Bible)
According to editor David A. Maxwell, the role of subsidized law enforcement is becoming increasingly supplanted by private security personnel (primarily as a result of municipal tax dollars spreading too thin, but also as a buffer to litigation from citizens injured and/or victimized on private property), and as a result, the criminal justice system will be forced to engineer new legal paradigms to control these corporate spaces, what with our "public" environments becoming increasingly privatized (shopping malls, apartment buildings, condominiums, retail outlets, hotels, bars, restaurants, casinos, health care institutions), a postmodern Main Street, fragmented and decentralized. What the industry needs (and what Maxwell provides) are a series of discourses that explore these new legal dangers and issues of accountability, providing a code of ethics for underpaid, underrespected "rentacops" who nevertheless find themselves bearing the brunt of municipal police functionality, badge-wearing "civilians" with limited arrest and investigatory powers.

Maxwell provides a brilliantly edited anthology of case studies designed for the security manager, but generally used as a supplemental text in university courses on security administration.Recently, however, many professors have realized that merely technical excurses on the security industry tend mainly to put their students to sleep, while oversimplifying the civic answerability issues (i.e. a litigation-happy American society) which haunt every rentacop comptroller (not to mention the citizens who are routinely victimized by poor training, negligent hiring, and cost-cutting managerial tactics).Maxwell's book (and others like it) are rapidly becoming the required text in progressive courses on the subject, useful not only for those working in the industry, but also the network of lawyers, policeman, magistrates, and even potential litigants who routinely come into contact with security officers.

It is perhaps no accident that Maxwell's selected cases are often highly entertaining in their own right, exploring the legal vicissitudes of some truly bizarre and, at times, unbelievable scenarios.Granted, most of the cases involve the usual synopses of simple negligence, intentional torts, vicarious liability, contract law, false arrest, illegal detention, invasion of privacy, entrapment, et al.But beneath it all, Maxwell's editorial sense of humor keeps a devilish grin on the reader's face, many of the cases giving off that whiff of seedy, voyeuristic pleasure we usually associate with "reality" shows on the Fox network.

Remember Butterfly McQueen, the Oscar-nominated actress who played Scarlett O'Hara's squeaky-voiced handmaid back in 1939?Well, in her elderly years she had a disastrous run-in a pair of overzealous security guards, who literally *karate-chopped* her to the floor of a Greyhound bus terminal because they "thought she was stealing" (Int. Sec. Corp. of Virginia v. McQueen, pgs. 185-7).Or how about a K-Mart shopper whose colostomy-bag is mistaken for shoplifted merchandise, and unceremoniously ripped out of his colon by a non-English-speaking store detective (Canty v. Wackenhut, pgs. 188-9)?Or a peckish youth who is caught pleasuring himself by a parking-lot security-camera, the tape maliciously circulated amongst the employees of his father's workplace (Turner v. General Motors, pgs. 208-11)?

I hate to sensationalize what is, in the end, a dead-serious range of issues. There are of course plenty of weighty, somber, tragic scenarios included here as well, where shots are fired, tempers flare out of control, and citizens and rentacops alike end up terrorized, humiliated, beaten or killed.Yet even the most banal of case-studies convey that self-surveillant chill of civic instability, tapping into our personal histories of resentment and humiliation in the midst of public embarrassment and misunderstanding, the abuse of authority, the sense of subtle victimization and entanglement many of us feel in a highly regulated, obsessively policed and hyper-litigious society.Roughly 95% of the cases here involve lawsuits where something goes *wrong* with the security apparatus, and there's nothing that gets the bile flowing faster in our culture than the looming threat of litigation, the gut-churning anxiety of trying to get compensated through the system for the routine abasements of living in a corporatized environment.

In the end, Maxwell's book has as much sociological as legalistic value. The rentacop, underpaid and disrespected, is becoming an important player in the high-stakes game of public safety and civil liability. But respect and higher wages will only come with a complete overhaul of the industry, both in its ethical precepts and legal safeguards. If Maxwell's book has the influence I hope it will have, then many of us will be able to live in a safer, happier, less persecutory public (private?) environment, with less hatred for the badge, and more confidence in the propensity of private citizens to look out for one another. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must read book for security and law enforcment professionals
The "Information System Security Officer's Guide" was a gem which offered the readers sound basic fundamentals on establishing and managing an information protection program. The follow-up "I-Way Robbery" is an equally excellent, easy to read and understandable treatise on a very complicated, challenging, and sophisticated theme of Internet crime and security. The authors have provided numerous examples of illegal intrusion of the of the Internet and have cited recommended solutions to prevent and avoid unauthorized and costly attacks by hackers, phreakers, crackers, and even foreign commercial and government agencies traveling on the I-Way which they analgously compared it to the modern Superhighways. This book is an excellent companion to the ISSO Guide and should be included as a reference book for security and law enforcement professions. It is also a must read book for executives, managers and supervisors to understand their responsiblities for effective management and operation of their connections to the Internet as we head into the new millennium. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Did Yogi Raman know Dr. Stephen Covey and the Monk?
Robin Sharma does a masterful job of expanding on Dr.Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People with his 8 Rituals of Visionary Leaders. As a certified Seven Habits Facillitator for the past 12 years, I found the book very stimulating and reinforcing to my Seven Habits practices and Principled Leadership. For example, Yogi Raman's Time Model for Visionary Leadership requiring Time leadership closely parallels Dr.Covey's Time Management Matrix focusing on the important/not urgent in leading a Quadrant II life style. The Yogi also recommends weekly planning around prioritized roles and goals. Again, I applaud Mr. Sharma for providing additional insights into my personal quest for achieving my Mission and Purpose in life. He also provides interesting perspectives that are helpful to me in my own "emotional intelligence" work as I advocate and teach Dr.Goleman's Five competencies of Emotional
Intelligence-Self awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. I am recommending this work to all my friends and students who share the quest for a "life of service and purpose to make a difference"-"leave a legacy".

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for personal change!
One of the best books I have read recently! It helps you put back in perpective what are the most valuable and important things in life and how to find peace armony and beauty where it really lies!
Reading this book has inspired me greatly to love and take care of myself and therefore I have decided and implemented to quit smoking that was a self harming habit!
I hope it will impress and inspire you too!
Other books I recommend are the four agreements by Minquel Ruiz and Recapitulation by Victor Sanchez!
Enjoy your reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story You Can't Stop Reading.
What's going to happen next rages through your mind as you tell yourself it's too late in the evening to start the next chapter...but you do! This is an insightful look into the techniques for excellence in leadership, and a thought provoking look into your own personal life. Much more than a book on leadership, you will find yourself looking in the mirror with a desire for a fresher looking face, and, thankfully, some ideas of where to start.

This was a joy to read. Everyone I have passed it on to has told me it is one of the best books they have read in a long time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, fast paced, yet thorough
The author's expertise in science, finance, management strategy, and journalism all pay off in this very well written book. It's both lively and fact-packed, with quite a few tables covering dozens or hundreds of IPOs in the biotech industry. It gives a spectrum of biotech probably much broader than what any one reader would be familiar with. In a few places, I would have liked a bit more detail: for example, in the IPO chapter, a paragraph about exactly what the investment bank "does", how it "does" it, what its risks are in taking on an IPO, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars making sense out of chaos
dr. robbins-roth's book is the best example i've seen of a text which makes sense of the short yet tangled history of the biotech business. from it's beginning, the biotech business has attracted the dreamers, the -don't-know-how-we'll-get- there-but-we-must-get-there types, and the scientific whiz-kids. this book not only charts the progress of the companies and the products, it also delves into the science and personalities behind the scene. this book is written at a level accessible to the layman, but is complex enough that professionals in the biological sciences will not find it too pedestrian. this is one of the most interesting, hardest-to-put-down science books i've read in many years.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Overview
This is a great overview of the world of biotech. The author explains the science with clarity and enthusiasm and the introduction this book provides to the corporate side of biotech is also very interesting and well written.

2-0 out of 5 stars bad writing
I read the first 20 pages of this book and quit. It was too painful to keep going. The author's wording in convoluted, tangential, and just plain annoying. She throws out dozens of names from the industry, so many you can't keep them straight. There is poor flow to the writing, so you cannot understand why she is telling you things from one line to the next. The topics of each paragraph jump from one subject to another with abrupt, confusing transitions. I returned the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and non hyped intro into biotech
I'll be starting a biomedical engineering Ph.D. program in the fall and have read recently a few books on the biotech subject. This one gave the clearest picture of the biotech industries, the companies in them, how to manage and finance them, as well as how to recognize solid biotech companies for investing purposes. A quick and entertaining read for anyone interested in the business behind biotechnology. ... Read more

If you're like many entrepreneurs, being in business means working with one or more co-owners. But what will happen to your company if a co-owner:

*wants out of the business?
*wants to retire?
*goes through personal bankruptcy?
*wants to sell his shares to someone else?
*goes through a divorce?
*passes away?

To make sure there's a smooth transition following someone's departure, it's essential that you create a sort of "premarital agreement" for your business with a buy-sell agreement. This legal document clarifies when co-owners can sell their interest, the circumstances when someone must sell, who can buy into the business and what price will be paid.

Buy-Sell Agreement Handbook walks you through creating your own buy-sell agreement, which is included on CD-ROM and as a tear-out. It provides all the tax and legal information you need at every step.

The 2nd edition, completely revised and updated, covers the latest estate-tax changes and how your agreement can affect your estate taxes. ... Read more

Book Description

Entrepreneurs, managers, and policy makers must make decisions about a future that is inherently uncertain. Since the only rational guide for the future is the past, analysis of previous episodes in industrial development can shape informed decisions about what the future will hold. Historical scholarship that seeks to uncover systematically the causal processes transforming industries is thus of vital importance to the executives and managers shaping business policy today. With this in mind, Johann Peter Murmann compares the development of the synthetic dye industry in Great Britain, Germany, and the United States through the lenses of evolutionary theory. The rise of this industry constitutes an important chapter in business, economic, and technological history because synthetic dyes, invented in 1856, were the first scientific discovery quickly to give rise to a new industry. Just as with contemporary high tech industries, the synthetic dye business faced considerable uncertainty that led to many surprises for the agents involved. After the discovery of synthetic dyes,British firmsled the industry for the first eight years, but German firms came to dominate the industry for decades; American firms, in contrast, played only a minor role in this important development. Murmann identifies differences in educational institutions and patent laws as the key reasons for German leadership in the industry. Successful firms developed strong ties to the centers of organic chemistry knowledge. As Murmann demonstrates, a complex coevolutionary process linking firms, technology, and national institutions resulted in very different degrees of industrial success among the dye firms in the three countries. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Limited interest for US readers
10 years is a long time in high technology, and alarms sytems are based on high technology. So this book is now of mainly historical interest and for background reading.

Compounding this issue for non-UK residents, is the fact that the book was written in the UK, by a UK engineer about UK alarm sytems. These differ quite significantly from those used in the USA. There are different regulatory standards and quite different customs and practices.

When published, the book was an exceptionally useful volume and it highlighted for me the mystery of why there was no equivalent in the USA, nor is there today. Mr. Cumming should update his book and someone in the US should take it as a model for a book about US alarm systems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it. Read it. Do it.
Alan Weiss is a Prophet to speaking and consulting professionals. With a fresh, no nonsense style, Alan gives the answers to the right questions: how to establish fees, build relationships, and say no to business that's all wrong. The speaking industry is filled with hot air. Weiss knows this and delivers insights that will cut your learning curve in half. If you could buy ONLY one book about how to be a successful speaker, this is the one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for Speakers!
I am a corporate entertainer - comedy magician - and have found this to be one of the best business books I have ever read. From selling, to marketing, to establishing fees, to finding your ideal client this book is terrific. I recomend it to anyone that is in a business that has anything to do with getting up in front of an audience; magician, comedian, musician, singer, speaker, trainer, consultant...I have just purchased "Million Dollar Consulting" and am enjoying that as much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Nuts-and-Bolts Advice for New and Experienced Speakers
Alan Weiss doesn't pull any punches. "Money Talks" is loaded with solid, specific advice you won't find elsewhere. From platform skills to marketing to leveraging your knowledge to create passive income and make yourself a star, he covers what you need to know to make it as a professional speaker.

The only thing lacking in this book is information about marketing yourself on the Internet. I'm hoping that if there is a second edition there will be a chapter included on the Internet. Even without it, this book belongs in the library of every speaker.

The best time to get this book is when you are just thinking about launching a speaking career, but it will benefit anyone who speaks professionally or hopes to one day.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Are Seroius About Making Money As a Speaker
Read this book first. Then, read it a second and third time. Over the past three years I have read approximately twenty books on both public and paid speaking. None have been as clear, focused, interesting, truthful, funny, encouraging, and helpful as Money Talks. My goal has been to build a consistent, high paying professional speaking business, but I have had trouble finding a clear direction. That is no longer the case. The authors down to earth, no nonsense business approach that focuses on customer outcomes instead of speakers egos makes it possible for most anyone with a sincere desire to succeed in the world of paid speaking. As a result of reading this book I have "tweaked" several aspects of my business. This has led to more effective speeches, more bookings, developing relationships with current and future buyers, and more enjoyment for myself and my customers. If results are what you are after, read Money talks!! A good companion book on structuring a speech is, "Powerspeak", by Dorothy Leeds. ... Read more
