3-0 out of 5 stars Common Sense? or merely perceptive?
This book is a decent introduction to body language. It is basic, and really won't shatter any of your preconceptions of how to read body language.

If you consider yourself to be perceptive, or if you have studied other books on body language, you probably will not find anything earth-shattering or new here, but for a newbie, trying to pick up basics, this is a quick intro.

3-0 out of 5 stars Basic
This is a very good book for beginners on how to understand body language ... but the division of the chapters, and some examples make this book very basic.
very easy and fast to read

1-0 out of 5 stars Too basic
My impression was that this tape contained the most basic ideas that author's in this subject matter have ever presented. For eg., "People crossing hands in front of their chest means that they aren't accepting what you are telling them." That is the most typical statement I have ever heard, and this tape is full of them. There is nothing enlightening, nothing that makes you glad that you bought and listened to the tape. I felt it was not good use of time or money. For

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Beginning Book
This is a great beginner's book to body language. It provides clearly-written descriptions and illustrations about how our actions and movements as humans can speak more loudly than our words can. This knowledge can be used to help determine if someone is being honest with you, agrees with you, is interested in purchasing your products, is attracted to you, etc. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Leader is Born!
A leader is always Born and as far as the belief goes 'Leos are Born Leaders' - However, the concept of this Book by John Maxwell is Developing a Leader within. This requires a motivation, a vision and an influence as the writer shares the principles of management through real life anecdotes, charts and graphs. A truly inspiring book that reveals wiz ways to excel and be a Leader. Interesting strips portray Leadership qualities with real life examples and sure, this becomes a quick 'glance read' chirping the zeal in to strife for successive climb. I've always recommended Management Quotes book of Pramod Batra and so is this Book on top of my Charts. Influence always make a big difference and this book implies the influential tricks to scale high to be a leader. Maxwell's techniques prove to be genuine stuff and anyways, the picked topics speak wide :

1. Influence - Defining Leadership qualities
2. Attitude - It really makes a big difference
3. Positive Change - foster integrity and self-discipline
4. Priorities - Defining goals
5. Integrity & People - Developing ties

Becoming a person of Influence is another Book of Maxwell that is thought-provoking and a Leadership technique of 'Influence' pays big dividends in longer run. A worthwhile life lesson to boost up self confidence and keep on high spirits with 'Developing the Leadership qualities' by John Maxwell. A sure fire way to adopt the techniques and surface the best in you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring inspiration for aspiring leaders
Developing the Leader Within You was a first rate book with an outstanding amount of useful and applicable knowledge. Dr. Maxwell guides the reader through the steps they need to become a leader such as solving problems effectively, learning to appreciate people, developing the right attitude and improving your leadership abilities and various other categories. One of the aspects I found useful was small activities interspersed within the chapters. These proved to be a way to gauge your progress at developing skills and also a nice break from reading the book. One of the most useful sections, to me, was the one on developing people. Dr. Maxwell provided specific ways in which leaders can motivate people and also tactics to avoid because they can de-motivate people. One of the traps I noticed myself falling into was thinking that success was based on luck, not planning. After reading this book I now realize that I do not have to wait around for a lucky break, but I can take action to make success happen. The book was easy to read and stayed away from text book like content. Dr. Maxwell interjected numerous quotes and stories which helped to keep my interest. He chose quotes from Charlie Brown to President Eisenhower to everyday people he encountered. Not only was the content helpful, but discovering fun bits of trivia was exciting. The only fault I found with this book was that Dr. Maxwell was sometimes a little vague in his descriptions on how to address certain issues. But as I read the book and understood his message more fully, I realized that he wants the readers to figure out the solutions for themselves. He provides the framework for us to become better leaders but each of us has to chose the best way for our personal styles. If you want to enhance your leadership ability, become better at working with people, or just improve yourself in general, I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars everything you wanted to know about becoming a better leader
Whether you are an established leader or just getting started, there is something in here that will benefit you. By clearly defining leadership and its five levels, Maxwell starts you off with a strong understanding of the type of leader you can become, and how close you currently are to achieving it.

He then brings clarity to the obstacles that may be in your path and shows you how to clear them out of the way. He helps you to set your priorities, check your integrity, learn how to initiate positive change, and become a problem solver. He stresses the importance of attitude, people, vision and self-discipline. In the end, he shows you not only how to develop your own leadership ability, but how to start developing others as well.

Though sometimes choppy in its presentation, with maybe a few too many quotes and cliches, the content here is top notch. If you are a Maxwell reader, you will see repeats of this material in his other books. But then, some things are worth repeating.

Larry Hehn, author of Get the Prize: Nine Keys for a Life of Victory

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Waste Your Money
This book is a bore and contains no useful information.
The book has so many quotes of others that it seems the author couldn't develop an original thought were he paid to.
Save your money or spend it on something worthwhile - this isn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and enjoyable
"Developing the Leader within You" by John C. Maxwell was a very enlightening book to read. It is designed to advise you how to be a leader and where to begin. I also found the book to be a good reminder of things that I should be doing in everyday life when interacting with people. I think sometimes we need to be reminded how important it is to have a positive attitude, integrity, and get to know those with whom you interact; people skills can go a long way. Mr. Maxwell made the book enjoyable by relating the topics to situations and people that he knew.
I enjoyed the research facts of how many people with terminal illnesses were still living due to a positive attitude compared to those who have a negative attitude. It wasn't like some books that try to dictate to you. He also used a mix of Charlie Brown from the Peanuts comic strip and other well-known individuals like Abraham Lincoln to help illustrate his points.
I'm not currently a leader within my company but this gives me a place to start and to practice some of the topics mentioned before I have to. Throughout the book you notice a few topics mentioned over and over showing their importance such as influence, people, and how the leader develops before his followers. I think something else John C. Maxwell does that is great is he has exercises for you to participate in while going through the book. So you're doing more than reading you're interacting. The one thing that is going to stick in my mind is "We are responsible for our attitudes". I sometimes forget its something I do have control over. I was reading this for a class but I would recommend this book to anyone to read, not just for those in the leadership world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding tool that gets results!
As a coach to both individuals and groups, I see the very costly problems in the workplace that result from the important conversations that are not occurring because they are too hard or scary. The cost includes harm to relationships, careers and the bottom line. Both executives and high performance teams have been derailed by not addressing the dead elephants in the room. Crucial Conversations is absolutely the best book on the subject of difficult and critical communication. The book is very well organized, presenting clear steps to create an environment in which the hard conversation can happen. There are so many tools in this book that if it were not so well organized and presented in stages, the reader would be overwhelmed. The authors handle this very well - you can tell there was experience and expertise in adult learning informing the structure of the book. Why my clients and I become so excited about the book is its immediate results. You can start using the concepts and skills before you have finished the book! The foundations of making the environment safe - even for someone you may not like or respect is particularly effective. I have been very pleased with the results I have experienced - as well as my clients. Every leader should have this book on their bookshelf!

A bonus to readers is the continued support from the authors on their website described in the book. There is a wealth of additional information, interactive reviews, assessments and even video vignettes that illustrate the learning points with relevance and humor. For those truly smitten, there are training courses available to assist in obtaining personal mastery or even to teach the material if desired. I recommend this book and Primal Leadership to top-level executives in the federal government and private sector. I, and they, have never been disappointed at the difference it has made. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Crucial Conversations - Crucial Results
I have read Crucial Conversations cover to cover 4 times now. The results in my business and my marriage have been amazing. The book is well written and easy to understand. It teaches step by step skills to help you master the content. Before reading this book, I thought influential people possessed a natural ability to effectively handle conflict. After reading the book, I now realize that there are specific skill sets that anyone can learn (and master) to effectively deal with these "High Stake," "Strong Emotions," and "Opposing Opinion" conversations.

My confidence and productivity has increased in every area of my life (My business has increased by 30%-50% since I read the book the first time) and I am now effectively handling conversations with my wife that once caused constant upset.

I would recommend this book for anyone 1) wanting increased results and 2) willing to have a profound breakthrough in how they communicate. It has made a profound difference for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!
Wanna argue? Nope. Then you need Kerry Patterson and his co-writers, who describe techniques for effective negotiation and conflict resolution in the context of important, potentially life-changing conversations. Examples include talking yourself into a promotion, bringing up important information at meetings and working out problems with your spouse. Some tips will sound familiar, such as knowing what you really want and being open to alternatives. However, the book also highlights some themes that are often forgotten in negotiations, such as making it safe for others to express their true feelings and desires. The authors explain how to avoid getting forced into false either-or choices and tell you how to remain alert for unstated alternatives or possibilities. This lively book includes many examples drawn from business and personal relationships. We recommend it in particular to those are new to negotiations and conflict resolution, though it teaches solid skills that any manager - or any marriage partner, for that matter - could benefit from mastering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent content, illustrated with clear diagrams
I bought this book after I heard Dr. Glickman, the author of Optimal Thinking-How To Be Your Best Self, recommend it during an Optimal Thinking seminar. When I read that Dr. Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, recommended this book too I knew that this was going to be a life-changing book for me. I was right. This book has given me a formula for handling myself and others correctly during tough interactions. I am embarrassed to admit that I sometimes yelled and degraded people when I did not get what I wanted from them. Now I use optimal thinking to put my best self in charge, start with heart, look for safety problems, make it safe, retrace my path, and take the other steps recommended in this book. The steps are simple and clear. I am not perfect at them yet, and might never be, but I have already come a long way. You can't go wrong with this book, so press the "Buy" button right now, and if you want to optimize your effectiveness in all areas of life, buy the other books I mentioned.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very basic common sense!
I was lead to believe there would be some ground beaking information in this book but it's really just common sense. I think everyone knows, when they're thinking straight, that just being true to yourself, honest, and respectfull of other people while holding to your point of view is the only way to truly get things done. And this is basically all this book says. ... Read more

Book Description

When Rick Pitino became the coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, he took them from NCAA probation to four spectacular Final Four appearances, including the championship in 1996 and an incredible return to the NCAA Finals in 1997. Under Pitino's leadership, the Wildcats garnered a 70 percent winning record. Now the head coach of the Boston Celtics, Pitino has clearly become a master at molding great players and great teams. What's his secret to success?

Pitino's method--and the reason he's both a peerless basketball coach and one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in the country--is built on a strategy of overachievement. He simply doesn't believe in shortcuts.

Success Is a Choice draws on Pitino's 17 years as a college and professional coach. In a friendly, one-on-one style, using anecdotes from his superstar career to drive home his message, Pitino presents a concrete, 10-point program for achieving success in every aspect of life, including:

  • How to make winning seem inevitable
  • How to achieve things that even you don't think are possible
  • How to subordinate your own ego and individual agenda for the common good
  • How to get people to work as a team
  • How to thrive on pressure
  • How to feel better about yourself--and improve the way you relate to others

Pitino's winning techniques appeal to everyone from corporate managers to educators to parents. Based on the same proven methods that have earned him and his teams legendary status, Pitino's plan of attack will help anyone become a winner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional ideology for motivating yourself and others.
The age old ideology that our success and happiness ultimately depends on what we think, while obviously nothing that we haven't heard before, is masterfully explained by Coach Pitino in this highly motivational book. The book is full of sound principles that can be used in any walk of life. While the underlying theme that success is a choice is simplistic and easily understandable, actually choosing a positive attitude in your everyday life is one of those things that is easier said than done, and the inspirational stories that Pitino tells from his experiences in the book are fuel for anyone's motivational fire and help make choosing and maintaining the positive attitude that is necessary for success an easier choice to make. I would rate this book right up there with the best self-help books of all time like those by Dale Carnegie and Stephen Covey.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some Good Advice but Not Too Deep
This book is a very fast read and Pitino hammers home some key points such as setting realistic short term goals. Also he emphasizes the importance of maintaining focused and keeping a positive attitude. He gives some examples from his coaching experiences. Some stories stand out more than others.

However, many parts of this book seem to repeat itself. Pitino does not distinguish each chapter enough. Somehow Pat Riley's The Winner Within offers better examples that are more special. None the less there is more good than bad and and any sports fan will appreciate Pitino's basic candor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hogwash!
There is nothing here that hasn't been written elsewhere, and better. But the biggest problem is the titular idea that "success is a choice." Hogwash! If success is a choice, why didn't Mr Pitino "choose" to succeed as coach of the Boston Celtics instead of failing miserably? It's abjectly self-serving to win a college championship and then write a huge pat on your own back congratulating yourself on having "chosen" to win. Where is the book after the Celtics fiasco? In point of fact, most of our successes or failures in life are determined by forces completely out of our control. In the words of the old adage, people like Pitino are born on third base and spend their lives thinking they hit a triple. Worse, such an attitude allows the haves to blame the have-nots for their own plight, instead of recognizing the systemic obstacles standing in the way of universal socio-economic enfranchisement.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is a Choice
Whether you are a basketball fan or not, this is a great book for those who are searching for the leader in themself. Rick Pitino has some very interesting stories of his past that makes this book. It is a well organized outline of how to develop yourself to be a better person. If you are searching, read it... if you are not, look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now everyone can have Pitino as coach!
At first glance, the book "Success is a Choice" seems to be just another informative guide to success. To a degree, this is true, but reading the book in this way does not reveal its true potential: The real power of the book is not as a passive informative piece of literature, but as an active companion which guides and motivates you through your projects.

Putting it simply: "Success is a Choice" is a coach. It is full of motivation talk as well as constructive criticism that Coach Pitino gave to his players in real situations. It also lists and analyzes quite a few Pitino's own mistakes and fumbles, and this gives you the feeling of candid nonpatronizing approach. In short - this book is the next best thing to having Coach Pitino himself by your side, coaching you to success... and the guy sure is a great coach!

The only bad thing I can say about this book, is that it doesn't look like a coaching book at first glance. As stated in the beginning of this review, the book seems to be just another "success guide", and I suspect this prevents many readers to realize its full potential.

Overall, a highly recommended book for anyone who wants to get gain more control over their lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great before an interview!!!!
I purchased and read this book a couple of years ago, only a few days before interviewing for a promotion at work. It caught my attention from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. During the interviewing process I answered many of the questions from info. that I had read out of (Becoming a Person of Influence.) I feel it was a major part of my getting the promotion. There were two others being interviewed that already had titles above mine and later ended up working for me. I have since purchased a number of copies of this book. I give one out to every new employee I hire, in which I'm putting in a supervisory role. It is an inspirational book along with educatinal. I would recommend it to anyone in a leadership role, work or otherwise. It is also a good rescource to go back & review now and then. It helps you stay on track as a supervisor or manager in business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life time guidance on how to influence people effectively
I bought this book about 3 weeks ago. Once I started reading this book, I know I can't stop reading it until I reach the final page.

In this book, John taught me on how to relate myself to others effectively. It is like I am going through a self-discovery session on some very basic elemments in human relations.

In this book John has challenged us on how to achieve Pareto Optimality in forming human relationship with one another. He doesn't leave us just as that. He has underlined the principles for all of us to refer to as at when the situation requires us to do so.

John's principles must be put into practise as the benefits are enormous not only to the practitioners but the recipients as well. I am convinced regardless of what field a person is in, this book will be a useful guidance.

2-0 out of 5 stars Look for his other books, don't buy this one
Please consider my suggestion before you decide to buy this book.
I recommend you consider buying his other two books instead of this one.
"The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership"
"The 21 Most Powerful Minutes In A Leader's Day"

|-POSITIVE-|
I can't say anything positive about this book, I was shocked to see this author repeat same information written in other Maxwell books.

|-NEGATIVE-|
I read 5 of his books on leadership, and they all share very similar information. If you read his other books, you will not find any new ideas here. This book badly repeats what's in his other books, and its written by some guy Jim. The writing style of his other books are much better as well. I advice that you don't buy it, just look into his other books I mentioned above.

4-0 out of 5 stars Irresistibe Approach!
Maxwell's Book is a no doubt a unique approach towards creating an irresistible personality empowering impact on others through Influence. The author offers ready reckoner tips with simple ways to influence others through positive interaction and attitude to boost up the image. Worksheets at the end of the book are great insights to put theory into practice. It sure has leadership tactics of nurturing others and having faith in people who are on the roll. Understanding is the key towards healthy relations and developing leaders. Listenening method has a proven effect of influencing others. The author suggests serving sub-ordinates and impressing them with influence to get the better results and become a person of integrity. Influencing is an art and no wonder, this comes with a positive attitude and a positive approach, anyways. A good pick.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read, Would Like to Have Seen More Biblical Examples
Maxwell's book is filled with many excellent suggestions, including how to:

1. Nurture others
2. Understand others
3. Reproduce leaders
4. Developing leaders
5. Become a person of integrity
6. Mentor others
7. Listen to others and actually increase your influence.

Maxwell clearly states that integrity is the key to leadership. He also spends time on how true leaders are to spend time positively impacting others instead of clamoring for attention and personal power over others (if you want to be a true leader, learn to serve others).

However, I must honestly say that I would have liked to have seen more examples of biblical characters in leadership roles mentioned. As a Christian, I like to see see how relevant the Bible is to everyday living (including leadership). Since Maxwell is a pastor, he is well qualified to share from the Bible and his own ministerial experiences on principles of leadership.

All in all, a good read with many good summaries of improving leadership qualities. However, if you are looking for a book with more mention of biblical examples (Moses, Noah, Abraham, David, etc.), I suggest Henry and Richard Blackaby's "Spiritual Leadership". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book puts it all together
For a business or proprietership this book definitely categorizes the guerilla marketing techniques so that you can make the best use of each weapon. It helped me put it all together so that I didn't put the cart before the horse. I don't have a marketing background but trying to start a business on a shoestring the 50 free weapons was a god send. His other books are great but very detailed. I couldn't see the forest for the trees. Using this book I made a marketing plan where I will be using 36 of the weapons in 30 days. Now, I understand why the mini cooper was such a huge success without a large advertising budget, using the tactics described in this book.
Thanks Jay!

1-0 out of 5 stars Repackaged information.
It seems to me like Levinson barely put any effort into this book at all. There really is nothing new or groundbreaking in this book. To me, this was just a quick way for him to capitalize on his "Guerrilla Brand Name" to make an extra buck with recycled information. The concepts in this book were so basic, they were almost insulting. Maybe if you are 14 years old and have no prior entrepreneurial experience this is the book for you. I felt ripped off. I actually ended up throwing it away... Catchy title, but it does not deliver at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Of The Guerrilla Series....
In other reviews I've classified this book as the "Greatest Hits" collection. Although this is the lowest cost book in the series, it condenses most (if not all) of the suggestions that have made the Guerrilla Series so popular. Since this book has been written primarily for small and medium sized business owners, much of what it contains may be basic for experienced advertising and marketing professionals. However, for the rest of us (business owners), the Series is a welcomed business partner. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars kinda blah
This book is good but it isn't good enough. While the techniques and methods are relevant and work, they just aren't agressive enough for today's competitve market. Times are a-changin. Guerilla PR Wired is the book to read nowadays. Check it out; it's well worth the thirty dollars.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREATEST ADVERTISING AND MARKETING BOOK EVER WRITTEN
As a small business owner, I have read dozens of books on advertising and marketing. Most deal with theory and few with real world solutions. This book gives you 100 ideas that you can use to improve sales. Many with low cost. Truly an amazing work!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth reading - it'll make success more enjoyable
I love the way Rich Fettke throws out the old rule book that focuses on "working hard" to succeed. EXTREME SUCCESS gave me a new outlook on how to achieve my goals and enjoy life's journey with a lot less struggle and much more fun! This book is not just about success; it's about developing a great attitude/perspective on life. It's filled with practical, do-able, ideas and inspirations that make it a book I will grab and apply to my life on a regular basis.

Fettke's use of the term "extreme" makes perfect sense. He shares wild stories from his extreme sports background as metaphors (like bungee jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge and skydiving form 14,000 feet) that lead into many great ideas he's learned from his clients on how to take your life to the highest level - to the "extreme" if you will.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gain Without Pain
This warmly and clearly written book is an excellent guide to personal success. It contains self management skills that are transferable to any area of life. Calling on his personal experiences, his training and experience as a Life Coach, and his participation in extreme sports, Rich Fettke lights the way toward success with less struggle. He uses metaphor, powerful questions, inspirational quotes, and strategic steps to motivate and educate. The book is full of valuable tools and strategies, such as "Creating your own luck", "Working with a partner", "Applying your strengths to your weak areas", "Dancing with your fear", and "Staying in the challenge Zone." As a Life Coach, I can highly recommend EXTREME SUCCESS, sure to help each reader create a life of success, joy, and balance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Success
As a professional personal coach I found Rich Fettke's "Extreme Success" an excellent resource for tips and techniques for use with my clients (not to mention myself!). My favorite is his idea of dealing wtih fears that inhibit us from doing the things we need to do to move forward in our lives. Called "dancing with your protector," it's an imaginative and powerful way to reframe the obstacles in our lives in a way that can actually propel us forward with a greater liklihood of success.

I host a radio program in Seattle called "The Working Life!(tm)" and have interviewed Rich about his book. I found him to be engaging and sincerely interested in helping all of us to make the most of what we've been given in this life. If we can do that--really do that--then our success will not only be extreme, but sweet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Perscription for Struggle Free Success
Far too many people imply that success has to be a struggle.
Rich accesses that success can be fun and easy. It's all
about knowing what you want, putting fear aside, and
just going for it!

With a warm and friendly style, Rich shares strategies on
how to conquer fear, craft a vision of your success, create
balance, build momentum, and take action to achieve your dreams!
Grab a pen, because he's packed lots of great coaching
tools right in the book.

My favorite "aha's" came from the balance wheel and visiting
your future self. Get it and fasten your seat belt,
because it will put you on the fast track to success!

5-0 out of 5 stars How far can you get by going it alone?
Many small business people and managers I work with hold on so tightly to the notion that self-reliance and hard work is what allowed them to achieve their success. That may be true to some extent. It's also a big reason why they sought out a professional personal coach. Somehow, they realized that something was holding them back. Fettke shows us what they've been missing -- the ability to create powerful partnering relationships and collaborate. Fettke shows us how to develop key alliances and leverage the help of other people. He gets you thinking about who and how others might give you what you need to achieve more with less effort. There are many people who can help, certainly not just coaches. Almost all great things, and great people, are built with the help of others. The quicker one discovers this simple idea, the faster and farther one will fly. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some nice tricks
This book is somewhat over-rated. Some of the chapters are just common sense. But there are also some tricks in 'sales'. The book emphasizes on silence and importance of the silence in negotiation.

1-0 out of 5 stars WASTE OF MONEY
This is a story book!I usually give books the benefit of the doubt but this book flat out sux.All this guy talks about is how he is some hot shot sports agent and the lessons he supposedly learned through the years.Let me tell you something, this book got old after the 2nd chapter.Every F'in paragraph has to do with one of his golf clients and bla bla bla.Its ridiculous. The title is true, they dont teach this at Harvard because they're stories of an individuals life which completely put me to sleep. But im not going to leave without giving some positives, like saying you should check out Automatic millionaire and the 12 critical factors books. Those are worth reading.Peace in the middle east!

2-0 out of 5 stars What is bigger, national debt or author's EGO??
The book is full of nonsense that should be simple common sense to anyone that has worked in the business world.Mostly this book is a chance for the author to talk of his many "high level" meetings and for him to boast about all of the execs and sports figures that he knows. This book is rather entertaining, but you will not gain much from it in the way of business or management knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give Yourself a Psychological Edge Over Others
This means reading people from the moment that you see or hear them, while you slow down, and place yourself fully in the moment, as you anticipate the future.

To do this you must have a good grip on who you are, and be more than okay with that.

While you have that, it's important to know the players involved in your business interaction - those present, and those not present. So, do your homework.

My favorite message, from this book, which I have used as a quote in published articles is, "If you alienate your peeers, you won't have to worry about corporate enemies."

Read this book to balance being yourself, and being a person amongst business people.

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't exactly set me on fire..
Mr. McCromick is indeed a great motivational writer/ speaker, but in this book, there is no new information that one doesn't already have by using common sense. No disrespect to Mark but they probably don't teach common-sense at Harvard Business School because there is a great possibility that the guys who make it to HBS already possess enough of it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brian Tracy is the best
Selling is so much more than fast talking and the gift of gab. To truly selling, you need to understand the mental game: of yourself, the buyer, and the prospect. Brian delves into all aspects to produce a program that is rock solid. The Psychology of Selling covers all the basis from prospecting to closing to overcoming objections. Adhering to the sales philosophy of kiss (keep it simple silly), this is a quick listen for anyone looking to boost their sales.

Todd Natenberg, Author of the book, "I just got a job in sales. Now what?" A Playbook for Skyrocketing Your Commissions

5-0 out of 5 stars Tracy is top notch
Some people might look for inconsistencies to Tracy's advice, however, this series has helped me improve my sell's skills more than any other sale's instruction that I have listened to or read. If you you are looking for an academic approach to psychology and selling this book will not include a large amount of quoted research. However, if you are looking for some ideas and skills to apply to interacting with clients or prospects this series is a wealth of practical information. I have yet to find a self help book free of inconsistencies or unsubstantiated data. Psychology of Selling is not an exception but it has too much practical benefits to pass up the knowledge out of a lofty sense of academic integrity.

5-0 out of 5 stars The modern way to sell
Brn Tracy's approach to selling may be a turn off to car salespeople and telemarketers, but is a breath of fresh air to all real salespeople.Tracy takes a consultative approach to selling. He teaches you how to ask questions, not merely read a script. He shows you how to build rapport and trust. And most importortly, he shows you how to create win/win situations with your clients.I also recommend Advanced Selling Strategies by Tracy and the unabridged audio tape program from Nightingale-Conant The Psychology of Selling and Advanced Selling Techniques.Your sales will soar and you will create happy customer relationships.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
Brian Tracy has been a favorite for about 15 years. His approach to sales is direct and to the point. He discusses the importance of relationships, of having the customer know you care, of good listening and question asking. He speaks about solution selling and consultative selling. Brian has taken more than 20 years of his experience, successes and mistakes, to come up with this incredible program. I prefer the unabridged version, but this abridged version provides you with some very valuable information, strategies and techniques.

For those who found Brian Tracy's work lacking, I wonder if they really listened to the program? I also wonder if they are nearly as successful, in career, personally and financially as Brian Tracy? I detect a note of sour grapes, probably due to the ego destroying way in which Brian nets out his simple program. Heck, as with most things, if the information is not applied or acted on, then the information is useless.

This is great stuff, and it has been proven to stand the test of time. New to sales or a seasoned vet? Give this a listen. I'll bet you find some things that you stopped doing or maybe a few new things to reignite your career. Listen, take notes, and take action on this material.

I also recommend the "The Accidental Salesperson". Great stuff, that works!

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be called "The Art of Deceit and Manipulation"
I picked up this book as a primer on selling, as I had heard good things about Brian Tracy's previous works. While it did provide an overview of selling techniques, what I heard was a review of selling techniques that I thought (perhaps hoped) had gone out of vogue many, many years ago.

For example, in order to "sell better" he suggests that confidence is key. And in order to shore up confidence, he recommends saying "I like myself, I like myself, I like myself..." over and over to oneself. Then he describes multiple ways to deceive and manipulate prospects so that they will buy your products.

Here's a radical concept: instead of this approach, what if salespeople increased their knowledge of their products, worked to understand their prospects' business and business problems, then worked collaboratively with them to solve their problems? Thereby increasing the salesperson's success, maintaining their integrity and thus building a basis for authentic self-confidence?

Nah, I guess that would take too much work.

There is absolutely nothing new here. In fact, the techniques it espouses are exactly the stereotypical "sales techniques" that have led this profession to be viewed with such disdain among the public at large. Very interesting, given that Mr. Tracy opens his talk with an assertion that the sales profession is a noble one (a view that I share, overall) and has somehow just gotten a bad rap. I'd suggest that books like this are a part of that problem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eliminate Stalled Marketing Thinking -- Become Irresistible
7 Stars *******

I am a big Faith Popcorn fan. That led me to go into reading this book with high expectations. What a great deal it was to have those expectations well exceeded!

Tom Peters first raised the theme of this book in his book, The Circle of Innovation. The vast bulk of most consumer purchases are either made or strongly influenced by women. Stop marketing generally, and be sure you marketing is gender friendly in the broadest sense. But Tom, as a man, could only take that point so far.

Faith Popcorn has really explained it very well. She has identified 8 key principles:

(1) Women link (the marketer's job is to make that easier for women -- witness the success of women-only Web sites)

(2) Serve all of a woman's needs, not just the ones she has part of the day (if she needs convenient ordering, be sure to offer everything she wants to buy conveniently -- take-out foods for all meals)

(3) Women want their needs anticipated (if she has to tell you what she wants, it's all over -- lots of work, stress, home responsibilities and money mean that home spas are doing well)

(4) Use the indirect approach (women prefer to notice things on their own and apply them, rather than getting a direct, hard sell -- women notice institutional appliances in great restaurants and put them into their own kitchens)

(5) Go to her and make it easy (witness the success of at-home direct selling)

(6) Sell one generation of women, and you get the next as well (see how children now dress like adults at a very young age, because Mom and daughter want to look like each other)

(7) Take on a role as a trustworthy adult to help women, and they will link with your brand (GE Financial Assurance provides a mentor role for women entrepreneurs)

(8) All the details matter (organic foods are taking off because they are healthier, even though very expensive).

As interesting as these points are, Faith Popcorn also deserves praise for the superb way she explains her ideas. In the beginning of the book, she has one example of each concept. Then there is a chapter on each principle. The chapter has many examples, and finalizes with one thorough one drawn from her consulting experience. Then, to be sure you've got the point, she takes well-known brands in each chapter and points out what they are NOT doing that they should be.

The crowning glory is a chapter on all of the things that Ron Perelman and Revlon are doing wrong, and compares it with how the brand was run originally. Faith couldn't find much of anything she likes about the Revlon approach. As a matter of fact, the company has done poorly.

But, at a broader level, this book is also about marketing in the 21st century. Although the focus of the book is women, those who market to men will often benefit from following the same advice. Saturn, a role model she describes, is not just appealing to women. Men like to be treated like people, too, when they buy a car. As a loyal Saturn owner, I know the approach worked well with me.

I can hardly wait for her next book! Have a great time as marketers begin to apply these principles, providing a better consumer experience for customers and more business success for their companies.

One trend she did not explicitly address are the many consumer goods companies that are converting to having mostly women in product design and marketing. That should help, too.

This book deserves more than five stars!

One trend she did not explicitly address are the many consumer goods companies that are converting to having mostly women in product design and marketing. That should help, too.

I suggest that you also think about what trends may emerge for women in the future, and begin to serve the needs that those trends create. For example, families are getting smaller. How can you make your products and services fit the one child family better?

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Truths Amid the Fluff and Arrogance
Faith Popcorn's EVEolution lays out some very important, practical principles (she calls them truths) for effectively marketing to women. How one would deliver on the truths of connecting women to each other, marketing to all of her lives, making sure she doesn't have to ask, marketing to her peripheral vision, etc. will be very different for a personal care brand versus money management brand. Nevertheless, if appropriately applied, these truths can make a brand more successful. I have seen results first hand.

The key to getting through this book is keeping the above in mind while wading through what in the end should be considered several minor flaws, even though they tend to dominate the pages of the book.

Notwithstanding several good case examples (e.g., Saturn), the book is filled with an array of very loosely thought out ideas that are so easy to poke holes into, they may leave the reader questioning whether or not following the truths really works.

Faith also, based on my marketing experience, correctly claims that "women don't bond with brands that market to them in an overly aggressive way. A full frontal attack isn't the way to turn a woman on." However, the entire book is presented via an "in your face" approach, which will likely turn off some women (and some men for that matter).

And finally, Faith attempts to make the case that women are superior to men... on all levels. I would agree that women are superior in many aspects, but they are neither superior nor inferior overall. This approach tends to diminish her credibility.

Nevertheless, Faith has keen insight into the way women think and operate. It's really true that "women don't buy brands, they join brands." Therefore, we must do all we can to join our brands in every way possible. Faith's 8 Essential Truths provide unique insight on how to achieve this. Creative, appropriate application of these principles to your band or business is up to you. It actually takes hard work, but as I said before, it will deliver results. For this reason alone, the book is well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favourite author because of his messages.
My most favourite author is Og Mandino. I read only non-fiction books. I have read all of Og's books(12). I have read over 500 books since 1986(thanks to Brian Tracy). In my opinion anybody who has had a setback should read "A Better Way of Life."

Og went from riches to poverty to riches. Read: A Better Way of Life. His story - how he went from a successful salesman to an alcoholic and "lost" his wife and daughter and lost his job. He was going to kill himself and a book that accidentally "fell in his hands" turned his life completely around. He later became editor of Success Magazine in the U.S. and wrote many books.
I suggest you read "A Better Way of Life" on how he went from success to failure and then back to even greater success.

However the best chapter in any all the books I have read is: Chapter XVIII in Mission Success. It is so good that I committed the whole chapter to my mind and I now recite it from time to time.

This is another great book by Og. I read this book and made several "notes" while doing so. Since I first began to read Mandino's books- I have found it extremely helpful to refer to specific things on a regular basis. I have typed the "Seeds Of Success" and read it at least once a day to help me keep these ideas and mottos fresh in my mind. This book has brought me hope where there was little to none before. One thing that this book helped me to realize is that each individual has his or her own conception of success... I am the only one who can determine that for myself. It also reminds me to "let go" of past situations; it can't be changed any way. Today, I will be the best I can and will not be included in that group of people who have regrets, yet do not take any action to make things otherwise. To merely survive in life and to just "exist" is not enough anymore. I want to truely live life to the fullest and Og gives me the "seeds of success" to do that.

Teachers of writing will tell you to write what you know. This book, centered around a bombadier's experiences in WWII, was written by a man whoserved as a bombadier in WWII, Og Mandino. It is designed to help you tolearn from the experiences of people "in high places" who havegone before...some of the greatest philosophers, self-help teachers, andreligious leaders. It is written in an unassuming method that will demandyour attention, and can be read by almost anyone in just a few hours' time, but will deliver information and ideas that will take you a lifetime tofully realize how important they are.

In 1999, I read this book 3 times, during what I still say had to have been the worst possible time in my life. It was a time of profound family betrayal, or acceptance of what I didn't want to believe about who my family really is, what they had expected of me for my 43 years of life, and the role that I blindly held. This book was a painfully compelling book for me to read, yet one that had supported me through my crisis, and led me to convert my family history into becoming a public speaker, a gender-based self-esteem coach, and a journalist. Last week, I decided to read this again, as I noticed that I am being invited to events that signal to me that I have made giant steps since reading this book in 1999. I am so excited about writing and presenting tailored t
