Book Description In this repackaged bestseller John Maxwell examines the differences between leadership styles, outlines principles for inspiring, motivating, and influencing others. These principles can be used in any organization to foster integrity and self-discipline and bring a positive change. Developing the Leader Within You also allows readers to examine how to be effective in the highest calling of leadership by understanding the five characteristics that set leader managers apart from run-of-the-mill managers. In this John Maxwell classic, he shows readers how to develop the vision, value, influence, and motivation required of successful leaders. Reviews (31)
1. Influence - Defining Leadership qualities Becoming a person of Influence is another Book of Maxwell that is thought-provoking and a Leadership technique of 'Influence' pays big dividends in longer run. A worthwhile life lesson to boost up self confidence and keep on high spirits with 'Developing the Leadership qualities' by John Maxwell. A sure fire way to adopt the techniques and surface the best in you.
He then brings clarity to the obstacles that may be in your path and shows you how to clear them out of the way. He helps you to set your priorities, check your integrity, learn how to initiate positive change, and become a problem solver. He stresses the importance of attitude, people, vision and self-discipline. In the end, he shows you not only how to develop your own leadership ability, but how to start developing others as well. Though sometimes choppy in its presentation, with maybe a few too many quotes and cliches, the content here is top notch. If you are a Maxwell reader, you will see repeats of this material in his other books. But then, some things are worth repeating. Larry Hehn, author of Get the Prize: Nine Keys for a Life of Victory

Based on the authors' highly popular DialogueSmart training seminars, the techniques are geared toward getting people to lower their defenses, creating mutual respect and understanding, increasing emotional safety, and encouraging freedom of expression. Reviews (48)
A bonus to readers is the continued support from the authors on their website described in the book. There is a wealth of additional information, interactive reviews, assessments and even video vignettes that illustrate the learning points with relevance and humor. For those truly smitten, there are training courses available to assist in obtaining personal mastery or even to teach the material if desired. I recommend this book and Primal Leadership to top-level executives in the federal government and private sector. I, and they, have never been disappointed at the difference it has made. Enjoy!
My confidence and productivity has increased in every area of my life (My business has increased by 30%-50% since I read the book the first time) and I am now effectively handling conversations with my wife that once caused constant upset. I would recommend this book for anyone 1) wanting increased results and 2) willing to have a profound breakthrough in how they communicate. It has made a profound difference for me.

Book Description Pitino's method--and the reason he's both a peerless basketball coach and one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in the country--is built on a strategy of overachievement. He simply doesn't believe in shortcuts. Success Is a Choice draws on Pitino's 17 years as a college and professional coach. In a friendly, one-on-one style, using anecdotes from his superstar career to drive home his message, Pitino presents a concrete, 10-point program for achieving success in every aspect of life, including: Pitino's winning techniques appeal to everyone from corporate managers to educators to parents. Based on the same proven methods that have earned him and his teams legendary status, Pitino's plan of attack will help anyone become a winner. Reviews (51)
However, many parts of this book seem to repeat itself. Pitino does not distinguish each chapter enough. Somehow Pat Riley's The Winner Within offers better examples that are more special. None the less there is more good than bad and and any sports fan will appreciate Pitino's basic candor.
Putting it simply: "Success is a Choice" is a coach. It is full of motivation talk as well as constructive criticism that Coach Pitino gave to his players in real situations. It also lists and analyzes quite a few Pitino's own mistakes and fumbles, and this gives you the feeling of candid nonpatronizing approach. In short - this book is the next best thing to having Coach Pitino himself by your side, coaching you to success... and the guy sure is a great coach! The only bad thing I can say about this book, is that it doesn't look like a coaching book at first glance. As stated in the beginning of this review, the book seems to be just another "success guide", and I suspect this prevents many readers to realize its full potential. Overall, a highly recommended book for anyone who wants to get gain more control over their lives. ... Read more

In this book, John taught me on how to relate myself to others effectively. It is like I am going through a self-discovery session on some very basic elemments in human relations. In this book John has challenged us on how to achieve Pareto Optimality in forming human relationship with one another. He doesn't leave us just as that. He has underlined the principles for all of us to refer to as at when the situation requires us to do so. John's principles must be put into practise as the benefits are enormous not only to the practitioners but the recipients as well. I am convinced regardless of what field a person is in, this book will be a useful guidance.

1. Nurture others Maxwell clearly states that integrity is the key to leadership. He also spends time on how true leaders are to spend time positively impacting others instead of clamoring for attention and personal power over others (if you want to be a true leader, learn to serve others). However, I must honestly say that I would have liked to have seen more examples of biblical characters in leadership roles mentioned. As a Christian, I like to see see how relevant the Bible is to everyday living (including leadership). Since Maxwell is a pastor, he is well qualified to share from the Bible and his own ministerial experiences on principles of leadership. All in all, a good read with many good summaries of improving leadership qualities. However, if you are looking for a book with more mention of biblical examples (Moses, Noah, Abraham, David, etc.), I suggest Henry and Richard Blackaby's "Spiritual Leadership". ... Read more

McCormack shares his experience, technique and wisdom, his street smart insights and skills, in a practical, how-to manner. Business will never be the same! Reviews (20)
To do this you must have a good grip on who you are, and be more than okay with that. While you have that, it's important to know the players involved in your business interaction - those present, and those not present. So, do your homework. My favorite message, from this book, which I have used as a quote in published articles is, "If you alienate your peeers, you won't have to worry about corporate enemies." Read this book to balance being yourself, and being a person amongst business people.

Book Description Success Can Be Yours With Brian Tracy's The Psychology of Selling! The world's foremost producer of personal development and motivational audio programs now offers an expanded version of Brian Tracy's sales classic. The Unsuccessful Salesperson says, "The other guy has the best territory." The Successful Salesperson says, "Every territory is the best one." The Unsuccessful Salesperson says, "That company will never buy." The Successful Salesperson says, "I can make that company buy." Confidence and self-esteem are just two of the factors that separate the successful salesperson from the unsuccessful one. In this comprehensive program, Brian Tracy, an expert sales trainer, shares more than 50 practical, day-to-day techniques for increasing your confidence in your sales abilities and boosting sales profits, including: Brian Tracy will help you master the art of closing the deal. Todd Natenberg, Author of the book, "I just got a job in sales. Now what?" A Playbook for Skyrocketing Your Commissions
For those who found Brian Tracy's work lacking, I wonder if they really listened to the program? I also wonder if they are nearly as successful, in career, personally and financially as Brian Tracy? I detect a note of sour grapes, probably due to the ego destroying way in which Brian nets out his simple program. Heck, as with most things, if the information is not applied or acted on, then the information is useless. This is great stuff, and it has been proven to stand the test of time. New to sales or a seasoned vet? Give this a listen. I'll bet you find some things that you stopped doing or maybe a few new things to reignite your career. Listen, take notes, and take action on this material. I also recommend the "The Accidental Salesperson". Great stuff, that works!
For example, in order to "sell better" he suggests that confidence is key. And in order to shore up confidence, he recommends saying "I like myself, I like myself, I like myself..." over and over to oneself. Then he describes multiple ways to deceive and manipulate prospects so that they will buy your products. Here's a radical concept: instead of this approach, what if salespeople increased their knowledge of their products, worked to understand their prospects' business and business problems, then worked collaboratively with them to solve their problems? Thereby increasing the salesperson's success, maintaining their integrity and thus building a basis for authentic self-confidence? Nah, I guess that would take too much work. There is absolutely nothing new here. In fact, the techniques it espouses are exactly the stereotypical "sales techniques" that have led this profession to be viewed with such disdain among the public at large. Very interesting, given that Mr. Tracy opens his talk with an assertion that the sales profession is a noble one (a view that I share, overall) and has somehow just gotten a bad rap. I'd suggest that books like this are a part of that problem. ... Read more

Book Description Reviews (34)
I am a big Faith Popcorn fan. That led me to go into reading this book with high expectations. What a great deal it was to have those expectations well exceeded! Tom Peters first raised the theme of this book in his book, The Circle of Innovation. The vast bulk of most consumer purchases are either made or strongly influenced by women. Stop marketing generally, and be sure you marketing is gender friendly in the broadest sense. But Tom, as a man, could only take that point so far. Faith Popcorn has really explained it very well. She has identified 8 key principles: (1) Women link (the marketer's job is to make that easier for women -- witness the success of women-only Web sites) (2) Serve all of a woman's needs, not just the ones she has part of the day (if she needs convenient ordering, be sure to offer everything she wants to buy conveniently -- take-out foods for all meals) (3) Women want their needs anticipated (if she has to tell you what she wants, it's all over -- lots of work, stress, home responsibilities and money mean that home spas are doing well) (4) Use the indirect approach (women prefer to notice things on their own and apply them, rather than getting a direct, hard sell -- women notice institutional appliances in great restaurants and put them into their own kitchens) (5) Go to her and make it easy (witness the success of at-home direct selling) (6) Sell one generation of women, and you get the next as well (see how children now dress like adults at a very young age, because Mom and daughter want to look like each other) (7) Take on a role as a trustworthy adult to help women, and they will link with your brand (GE Financial Assurance provides a mentor role for women entrepreneurs) (8) All the details matter (organic foods are taking off because they are healthier, even though very expensive). As interesting as these points are, Faith Popcorn also deserves praise for the superb way she explains her ideas. In the beginning of the book, she has one example of each concept. Then there is a chapter on each principle. The chapter has many examples, and finalizes with one thorough one drawn from her consulting experience. Then, to be sure you've got the point, she takes well-known brands in each chapter and points out what they are NOT doing that they should be. The crowning glory is a chapter on all of the things that Ron Perelman and Revlon are doing wrong, and compares it with how the brand was run originally. Faith couldn't find much of anything she likes about the Revlon approach. As a matter of fact, the company has done poorly. But, at a broader level, this book is also about marketing in the 21st century. Although the focus of the book is women, those who market to men will often benefit from following the same advice. Saturn, a role model she describes, is not just appealing to women. Men like to be treated like people, too, when they buy a car. As a loyal Saturn owner, I know the approach worked well with me. I can hardly wait for her next book! Have a great time as marketers begin to apply these principles, providing a better consumer experience for customers and more business success for their companies. One trend she did not explicitly address are the many consumer goods companies that are converting to having mostly women in product design and marketing. That should help, too.

One trend she did not explicitly address are the many consumer goods companies that are converting to having mostly women in product design and marketing. That should help, too. I suggest that you also think about what trends may emerge for women in the future, and begin to serve the needs that those trends create. For example, families are getting smaller. How can you make your products and services fit the one child family better?
The key to getting through this book is keeping the above in mind while wading through what in the end should be considered several minor flaws, even though they tend to dominate the pages of the book. Notwithstanding several good case examples (e.g., Saturn), the book is filled with an array of very loosely thought out ideas that are so easy to poke holes into, they may leave the reader questioning whether or not following the truths really works. Faith also, based on my marketing experience, correctly claims that "women don't bond with brands that market to them in an overly aggressive way. A full frontal attack isn't the way to turn a woman on." However, the entire book is presented via an "in your face" approach, which will likely turn off some women (and some men for that matter). And finally, Faith attempts to make the case that women are superior to men... on all levels. I would agree that women are superior in many aspects, but they are neither superior nor inferior overall. This approach tends to diminish her credibility. Nevertheless, Faith has keen insight into the way women think and operate. It's really true that "women don't buy brands, they join brands." Therefore, we must do all we can to join our brands in every way possible. Faith's 8 Essential Truths provide unique insight on how to achieve this. Creative, appropriate application of these principles to your band or business is up to you. It actually takes hard work, but as I said before, it will deliver results. For this reason alone, the book is well worth reading.

Og went from riches to poverty to riches. Read: A Better Way of Life. His story - how he went from a successful salesman to an alcoholic and "lost" his wife and daughter and lost his job. He was going to kill himself and a book that accidentally "fell in his hands" turned his life completely around. He later became editor of Success Magazine in the U.S. and wrote many books. However the best chapter in any all the books I have read is: Chapter XVIII in Mission Success. It is so good that I committed the whole chapter to my mind and I now recite it from time to time.
