Book Description

Kreitner and Kinicki's Organizational Behavior, 6th Edition, continues its tradition of being up-to-date, relevant and user-driven.Kreitner and Kinicki's approach to organizational behavior is based on the authors' belief that reading a comprehensive textbook is hard work, but that the process should be interesting (and sometimes fun). Thus, they consistently attempt to find a way to make complex ideas understandable through explanations, contemporary examples, and/or learning exercises.

The cover again depicts the well known visual brand of Wolves. This remains a central theme because Kreitner and Kinicki see wolves as an instructive and inspiring metaphor for modern Organizational Behavior.Wolves are dedicated team players, great communicators, and adaptable. These are key success attributes in today's workplace. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Common sense in a bound volume
This book discusses a topic that is a grab bag of different disciplines and has nice illustrations but i dont know if it is worth close to $100. Anyone who has significant work history intuitively knows a bulk of the material in this book. The book could be condensed to include the hard data and scientific findings and leave out much of the intuitively obvious commentary. This book is no worse than scores of similar textbooks on 'soft'topics but with the way prices are going many students are captive buyers, forced to buy textbooks at the teacher's request for perhaps questions used in the book for grading purposes while the general info can readily be found in college libraries.

3-0 out of 5 stars Scholar's choice
The book may be a good choice for a scholar of OB. If you are a graduate student like I am, you may find it difficult to follow and overloaded with scientific terms. To my mind, the simpler the better, which this book is not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST firefighting books out
Im just starting out with my FF1 classes and the book is a lot better then the third editon, more picture, deeper explenations, and most important more topics, the state requres the Essentials of Firefighting 3rd or 4th edition The fourth edition is by far the best, it covers allmost everything you MIGHT encounter on a scene......This is a breat Firefighter book, although it doesnt cover any medical ops it just as good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Essentials of Firefighting is one of the books that will make a firefighter's career easier. So much is covered in depth. The chapter's are larger and in greater depth than IFSTA's 3rd edition. New Chapter's including building insrtuction make this book easy to follow. All grassroots firefighing is covered very well.

Every fire service that I know of uses this book as the core to its training program. This book contains the Firefighter 1 & 2 level knowledge. For those that are more advanced in their careers, you will need to go to IFSTA's job specific books. This book is the "core values" of the fire service that every firefighter needs to know. Even paramedics should at least own this book to understand what firefighters do because they work so close together. IFSTA has really done a quality job with this book. I've used this book along side its companion study guide and student applications. As of this point in time IFSTA has no plans to produce a 5th Edition so this book will be the leading text in the fire service for at least a few more years.

If you want to be a firefighter, you need this book. If you are a paramedic or police officer it would be good to know some of the information in this book because at a scene we all work so closely anyway. We need to understand the roles that each of us has and the capabilities of the people we work with. You cannot be in emergency services and not own this book. The information is too valuable. This is the best single firefighting book available. Delmar published its own version of this book but it can't come close to what IFSTA has been doing for so many years.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book.
I am currently attending DOD Fireschool at Goodfellow AFb, TX. It is THE best Fireschool in the nation. This is the book we use. Good info, some a little outdated, good pics, good diagrams.

truly helped me through the six months probationary period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!
This is a must have for anyone who aspires to being a firefighter. Vivid descriptions, Helpful tips, How-to Skill Sheets, and Clear illustrations help the student master otherwise difficult material. Book Description

In the last four years, the United States has lost 2.3 million jobs—the most in any four-year period since Herbert Hoover and the Great Depression. Currently, millions of workers are unemployed both in the United States and worldwide and the problem isn’t likely to abate anytime soon. In the 2005 edition of his legendary job-hunting book, WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE? Richard Bolles presents a detailed plan for facing this societal problem head-on, declaring that we must each begin by mastering this new world for ourselves and then, once empowered, share our knowledge with others to empower the world.

In PARACHUTE 2005, Bolles offers a completely new book for this uncertain job market, laying out a simple, step-by-step plan for finding meaningful work and mission despite our economy’s jobless recovery. Featuring fresh explanations of old concepts and the introduction of new ideas, Bolles defines the distinctions between "resume jobs" and "grapevine jobs," between "passive job-hunting" and "active job-hunting," between "weak ties" and "strong ties," and much more. These are not normal times. And this is not your normal PARACHUTE.It faces squarely the "workquake" that is shaking up the job market around the world, and gives not only simple steps but steady hope. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent for learning
This book is very good. It is best suited for a student who is willing to put a good amount of time into his/her studying. The reason I say this is because it is very detailed, the diffenitions are very thorough and at times confusing, and there is a wide range of topics covered. It probably would not be good for a first year student unless they really want to learn the material which is a little dry at times. I thought that the opening cases in each chapter was a good way to tie the material to real life situations. Overall, this is a great tool for learning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Organizational Behavior
We used this book as our textbook for Organizational Behavior this semester, and I found it to be extremely helpful. The writing is clear and concise, and the chapters are divided into four parts that make the distinction between individual and group study clear. There are plenty of graphs, tables, and diagrams, which illustrate the theories and statistics clearly. Most helpful, however, were the vocabulary definitions and the chapter summaries, which alleviated some of the pre-test stress.

4-0 out of 5 stars Org. Beh. review from Kate Sirko in Harlaxton, ENGLAND
The book, Organizational Behavior: Foundations, Realities, and Challenges by Debra Nelson and James Quick is a good source for anyone interested in learning about the behavior in organizations. It involves everything from the general concepts of organizational behavior to the detailed structure and processes within an organization. The graphs and charts help the visual learners, such as myself to better understand important concepts and theories. After each chapter, the authors displays summaries for the learner to review important key terms and concepts before reading on to the next chapter.Unfortunately, the defintions of the majority of the terms throughout the book can be described in a simple, easy to understand way, but the authors fail to do so. On the other hand, various case studies fill the book for students to get involved in class discussions and debates.Overall, this book is a good source for professors and teachers to utilize in their classrooms.

3-0 out of 5 stars Evan's Insight
This book provides a very clear, simple difinition of Organizational Behavior. The subheadings and bold words make it easy to understand what is necessary for comprehension. Also the current issues and up to date examples make it easy for the reader to engage in the material at hand. However, the books multiple use of models can be somewhat confusing.I also feel that the author uses over-detailed deffinitions of words that could be much easier defined. The chapters are somewhat lengthy and need to be more concise. The review sessions at the end of each chapter were very helpful and porvided good key's to what was neccessary for retention. If anyone doesn't know what Organizational Behavior is they should definaltely check out this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Ways to use special interests for people with ASD/AS!
I have read all three of Temple Grandin's books. Each offers a different look at what it is like to experience Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). In "Developing Talents" Grandin provides the readers with insight into how parents and educators can assist people with High Functioning Autism/Asperger Syndrome (HFA/AS)achieve success.

Presented in an easy to read format, this book focuses on using one's strengths, natural talents, and special interests to gain
employment and lead successful lives. This book offers helpful strategies to promote such things as addressing sensory needs in the workplace as well as creating a portfolio to showcase one's talents.

In today's society, having marketable job skills is a must. This book gives a proactive look at some of the challenges faced by people with HFA/AS. It is important for parents and educators to introduce the concepts of the book early in the educational careers of these students as the skills are life skills in addition to career skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Breed
I have read extensively on negotiation, including everything written by folks affiliated with the Harvard Negotiation Project. I think that _Getting Past No_ is the best of all the books.

Its conciseness is deceptive. The concepts expressed are profound. For example, I cannot count the number of clients to whom I have explained the concept of BATNA (best alternative to a negotiated agreement, i.e. what you do if the negotiations fail) before we head into a session of mediation or other negotiation. I have reread this book several times at widely spaced intervals and have found it better than I remembered each time.

I think this particular book is also much more helpful to those who participate in negotiations that are less structured than labor or arms negotiations that are highly choreographed than was _Getting to Yes_, which at times seemed to assume that all players in the negotiation would be using the same text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impasse Blockbusting
In his superb book, William Ury builds on the pricipals first put forth in his first book with Roger Fisher, "Getting To Yes." In "Getting Past No" Ury discusses the nuances and niceties of negotiating using a joint problem solving approach which is "interest based" rather than being "rights based" or "power based." Ury explains that the challenge is to convert a confrontational situation to a cooperative creative problem solving process, that integrates the parties in a negotiation into a cooperative mode, that results in the best long term agreements.

The specific wonder of this book, is its focus on what to do, when you don't know how to get past a problem. Ury calls his method the "Breakthrough Strategy" and is virtually totally as applicable for mediators as it is for negotiators. In fact, several times, Ury mentions that a mediator may assist the process.

Simply put, Ury contends that there are basically 5 things that one needs to do to preserve smooth negotiations and to break through an impasse if it occurs. He calls these 'steps' by the following designations: "Go To The Balcony", "Step To Their Side", "Reframe", "Build Them A Golden Bridge" and "Use Power To Educate." These simple concepts are extremely useful tools for negotiators and mediators alike.

There is no disappointment in this book. The approach and the writing style are just superb. Once again, the Harvard Group, especially William Ury, have produced a book that anyone can gain from and is almost a must for those in dispute resolution and negotiation on a day to day basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
This is probably the most useful book I've ever read. I'm kicking myself for not reading it sooner. 1000 thanks to Dr. Ury. This is one title you will never regret buying.

3-0 out of 5 stars 2.9 stars ~ possibly useful for you
This book is a well-written and highly accessible introduction to the Meyer-Brigg's 16 personality type system.

As an INFP type, it was a relief to read in print a reflection of my own sentiments I've expressed to others about my own views (in lieu of my personality): how I can't get a job doing just ANYthing that's "hot"; that I have to feel I'm fueling something I believe is truly meaningful; etc. So, this book can help with issues like self-acceptance through this validation. But, I am another INFP among many that is a bit tired of being portrayed as the Human Resources type or that social occupations are generally a best fit.

This is may help you identify some of your general needs from your career. But, if you truly have a problem with vocational guidance then you will probably need a heck of a lot more than this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars I waste of my time
The first few chapters (1-4) of the book kept me intrested. Once, I started reading Chapter 5-20, the information became confusing to me: Dominant function, Auxiliary function and 3rd and 4th functions, etc..
The author repeats alot of the info. over and over again on all the chapters. I truly didn't find this book helpful at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful approach
I have long been a follower of MBTI, I have applied it in several ways - personal relationships, professional relationships, etc.. but in recent months I have really been questioning if my job is "right" for me.. This book sheds tremendous light on the concept of type as it pertains to career happiness. It is a MUST read for those who are already intrigued by MBTI studies and a DEFINITE read for those who are unhappy in the workplace and just starting to put a plan of action together.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Guide to MBTI Types
This is a great book for those who are trying to figure out their Myers-Briggs type. It has very detailed descriptions for each type complete with workplace examples, and wisely instructs the reader to read each type's description before deciding which one they fit. This is much more accurate and interesting than if the book just had the MBTI test. The book also goes in-depth, explaining to the reader which functions of the type are most dominant and how this makes a difference in problem-solving in an occupation. However, the book does have quite a lot of reading just to get to the career information (about half of which I skimmed). The career information is not very in-depth, but with only 16 types this is understandable. The reader should know that other things factor into choosing a career, which will help in narrowing down the large listing of career possibilities under their type.

3-0 out of 5 stars Doubts about Validity
I was VERY disappointed with the "occupations" selection according to type in this book. My type, if I remember correctly, is Introverted Judging Sensing Whatever... and the list of recommended occupations was lacking in the extreme. I didn't find any one job that appealed to me, that said "this is you." In fact, I've tried many of the careers listed for my type (high school teacher, counselor, social worker) and I [wasn't good at] those jobs. And I reviewed the Type questionnaire and still obtained the same answer. So...

..I'd like to re-iterate this to all career counselors: just because a person is introverted and compassionate does NOT make that person a people-person! This kind of stereo typing drives me crazy. I might be in touch with my feelings, but that doesn't make me want to touch someone else's!

Enough about me. This book is well written, but overall I strongly doubt the soundness of personality-typing. I know that psychological testing has found the tests valid, but as with all psych testing, the outcomes are very subjective.

My recommendation: If you want to know more about the type of work that would be ideal for you, check out anything written in the vein of Holland's RIASEC typology. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful at all
As an attorney, I read a lot of publications about creating nonprofits -- here's what you need to know about this book:

1) No clear instructions on how to incorporate or how to fill out (very complicated) IRS forms necessary to obtain tax exempt status.

2) Covers a lot of topics only lightly, skipping important details.

3) No detailed info on state laws, which is extremely important to every nonprofit corporation.

If you really don't want to visit an attorney, Nolo's book "How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation" is the best one available, and addresses everything this Dummies book doesn't.

2-0 out of 5 stars Be careful!!!
OK this book makes you feel like incorporating is as easy as bying the book ...

But it is way too vague, and omits to tell you what you get yourself into !

After reading this book, I incorporated and for additional info I bought Nolo's How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation in California by Anthony Mancuso (or How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation if you don't live in california) and I got really scared.
This nonprofit kit is really for dummies, it doesn't even talk about applying for state tax exemption which is as important as federal tax exemption, or your responsibilities and duties as a director or officer.

I would really advise you to buy Nolo's book ( The author is much more responsible, he clearly tells you that you should prepare your bylaws, your federal and state tax exemption application BEFORE submitting you articles of incorporation ...

Plus, this nonprofit kit for dummies is making some huge mistakes! It tells you that the Board of Directors is composed of the president, vice president, secretary and CFO ... which is totally untrue, they are officers
The board of directors is composed of guess what ... directors.

5-0 out of 5 stars all-in-one resource
This book puts it all together, with very savvy advice on not just what to do to launch and sustain a non-profit, but how to do it well, with realistic goals. My favorite sections are the ones on writing: how to develop a mission statement and a grant proposal. But all the nuts & bolts information about budgeting and raising money is excellent, too. The advice also is very flexible, so it can apply to nonprofits that are social service-oriented, arts-oriented, etc. A good starting point for all of us who want to turn dreams into realities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I don't feel so dumb!
Great book for someone starting at ground zero!

Before I found this book, I was struggling with my fear of overlooking some important aspect while starting a non-profit, the Financial Literacy Infusion Project (FLIP). My intrepidation was actually putting some of FLIP's potential funding in jeopardy. When I looked at the scope of topics in the table of contents, I breathed a sigh of relief. I was on my way to filling in some important "holes" I had overlooked and feeling confident that I was developing a strong foundation for FLIP.

Hutton & Phillips cover the gamut of starting and running a non-profit in a reader-friendly format. NP for Dummies is also loaded with references and resources for more information on any subject covered. The CD is also a definite, easy to use PLUS! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for job seekers and career changers
If you're like me and hate what you do for a living but are floundering, Julie Jansen's book, "I Don't Know What I Want, But I Know It's Not This," is a godsend. I've heard Jansen speak. She's smart, dynamic and refreshingly down to earth. Her book is the same. Reading it is like having a private career coach or a supportive, no-nonsense friend who is always there to give you [boost] you need to stop whining about work and do something about it! It's written in Jansen's warm, straightforward style and packed with practical information (e.g., websites for finding a job, dealing with job stress, getting a free critique of your resume), self-assessment tools and action plans that are actually fun and easy to use. All of this is extremely helpful for organizing your thoughts, honing in on the real reasons you're unhappy, and discovering valuable clues about who you are and what you really want to be when you grow up. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is ready to get serious about finding work they can feel good about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful exercises...easy read...very useful.
This title provides effective exercises for would-be career changers and entreprenuers. After spending 10 years in the corporate world and making a couple unsuccessful attempts at small business, I found myself thinking "I don't know what I want, but this isn't it." Locked into a career that pays well, but has little else to recommend it, I've been having a hard time finding a vocation that offers fulfillment, but doesn't involve going broke in the process. The exercises in this book helped me clarify what I want (and do not want) from my work-life and helped me to develop a plan to acheive it. I recommend using this book in conjunction with "Do What You Are" by Tieger.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'll Know It When I See It
I liked the book. Good suggestions on how to analyze your interests, experiences and skills. Very helpful for displaced workers. But, I liked a book called Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life by JoAnna Carey even better. Rat Race Relaxer showed me how analyze my interests then took it a step further so I could discover new ways of seeing and changing my current situation. For those of us with family or financial obligations that limit our ability to change jobs (or wait for the "right" job when downsized), Rat Race Relaxer is a better choice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Still Don't Know What I Want
I found out a little more about myself as far as attitudes and personality (not much I didn't already know; just a litte reaffirming I guess to have gone over the exercises), but I still don't know what I want.

The book may help you, or maybe not, place yourself into one of the six categories the author describes on why you want to change jobs. The book may also help you itemize your values, attitudes, change readiness, personality preferences, interests and skills into neat categories. The book does nothing in helping push you to finding gratifying work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless aggregation of standard self-help information
I found the information and exercises in this book to be a simple aggregation of the standard self-help/self-improvement informaton that you'd get from an ineffective career counselor, HR manager, or a corporate management consultant. Many of the excercises are wandering and unfocused, and not very helpful in determining goals and action plans for change. I'd like my money back, but more importantly, I'd like the time I spent reading the first few chapters back. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good information.
I bought this book prior to interviewing for my current job. The book contains some good information but to be honest I wasn't asked the questions contained in the book. Of course this isn't the books fault. However, the book did help me prepare myself mentally in the event the questions did come up and it helped me to learn how to collect my thoughts and answer confidently. Recommended if you have interview anxiety at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it's weight in gold
This book is a must for anyone who is either looking for a job now or possibly will be in the future, which is just about all of us nowadays. It is a no-nonsense reference guide to the kinds of questions to expect during the interview and what the both weak and strong responses are to them, as well as how to respond to inappropriate or illegal questions without totally killing your chances at getting the job.

I especially like the list of questions right at the start for use as a quick index when filling out employment questionnaires. Strong responses to such questions as what aspects of your current job do you like best, or least, are quickly found with a discussion of the reasoning behind the answers.

This book is concise and to the point, and well worth the price even if you don't expect to need it in the near future, if just for the self-confidence and self-examination opportunity it gives you.

I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Well written, but...
An entire book of ONLY interview questions is just too much of a good thing, IMHO. There are several books which have a chapter on interview questions, and list only the ones which are you really likely to encounter, which I have found much more useful.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you can buy it cheap then it may be worth looking into.
The beginning chapters are just fluff & common sense. However, it will at least get you thinking about what you may incounter during an interview. I wouldn't rule this book out completley. The biggest problem I had with this book was that, unless you have tons of time to practice and study each question, it is simply impractical to expect to cover all the material. My advice would be to prepare more general areas for the interview. Focusing on particular questions is almost a waste of time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
Maybe I'm just nit picky but although there are some informative tidbits, I feel this book is poorly written. There are other, better Job Interview books on the market. If you're going to plunk down some hard-earned money for this, you're making a mistake. Buy it used. That said, the follow up to this book, something like More Answers to 250 questions (or something like that) is a much better buy. ... Read more

In the words of Fortune magazine, this is "the gold standard of career guides".Here's why:

•PARACHUTE is always current and up to date.•It discusses what has changed about the job-market, and the new attitudes that are required in order to survive therein.

•It aids career-changers, as well as job-hunters, and has a detailed step-by-step plan for identifying a new career, as well as more detailed strategies for locating just the job you want in the geographical area of your choice.

•It has a detailed description of interview questions, and what kinds of answers the employer is looking for, plus step-by-step salary negotiation strategies.

I am a career coach with eight years of experience working with people wanting a new career - a better fit with their talents, more meaningful, a better work environment. If you want to choose a career that will be very fulfilling as well as something you will be successful at, forget about "Parachute". It just doesn't have the depth and wisdom it takes to coach you through this most important life decision.

Another career counselor who reviewed "Parachute" recommended that you get two other books instead. I agree. They are "The Pathfinder: How to Choose or Change Your Career for a Lifetime of Satisfaction and Success" by Lore, and "Do What You Are" by Tieger. "The Pathfinder" is the best career decision book ever, the seminal text, the masterpiece on the subject - this is, if you are serious about having a great life and unwilling to put up with less. I also agree with the other reviewer that "Parachute" is a great job hunting book, but only if you know exactly what job you are looking for. Reading "Parachute" takes some of the fear and uncertainty out of job hunting. But if you are trying to decide what to do with your life, forget about "Parachute".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for all ages!
This book is great for people of all ages! It really helps you find your niche in life by doing a little soul searching. I was able to identify my strengths and use them to get a job I love! This book should be a part of all high school and college graduates itinerary before going into the 'real' world. Thank you Mr. Bolles!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Job Search Book
Bolle's book is still timeless for job seekers of all kinds. I feel that his book updated each year to meet the current trends in society is critical. He needs to address those issues, like the web, downturn in the economy and the like.

The most critical part of the book is the self evaluation section. This is a very structured process that can be used intutitively as well. Bolles asks you to write a few stories about yourself, then, what did you like and dislike about those stories? What did you do well, where did you fail or feel challenged beyond your abilities? These are the critical areas of the book that take time to get through, yet you can evaluate yourself and understand what you like, it is what you do best, usually.

We excel what we are good at, according to Bolles, this method will help us discover what we are best at.

I have recommended this book to many over the years, and still do. Whether someone is in college, or someone is going through a long term transition after being in a job for a long time or moms returning to the work place, this book will be very instructive for you.

One of his processes is very simple asking you to compare who you would most like to talk with or groups of people you would rather relate with. This is a standard set of tests for some very expensive career consulting, he gives it to you for the price of his book and the time to self evaluate yourself. Then, he breaks down the possible job areas and skill sets related to these groups.

Again, a worthwhile journey for anyone not wanting to wander any longer in the world of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unemployed no more!
Yesterday, I nervously dialed the phone number to my job interviewer. It was Tuesday and he had promised he'd let me know about the job by last Friday.

I had followed the book, "What Color Is My Parachute," to the letter. I had a perfect resume and cover letter. I dressed up for the interview, prepared my list of questions to ask during the interview, memorized all the tips, and most importantly, emailed a thank you note afterwards.

Despite all this, I was still nervous about getting the job. I haven't even graduated with my undergraduate degree yet, meaning I have no experience. If I got the job, it was going to be my first job after college.

To my surprise, he said, "I emailed you about the job. Can you start May 11th?"

"That," I replied, "would be awesome."

Based on that experience, I heartily recommend the book on the interviewing techniques alone. However, that's not all I got from this book. I got a great system that determines what job I'd like to be in. Not only does the book ask about career interests, but on the part of the country I want to live in and the working conditions I prefer, which are two categories I never even considered. I recommend this book to everyone who needs to get a job these days and wants an edge on the competition. Because of this book, I am happily on the start of a long career.

1-0 out of 5 stars Would you buy a Taurus because it gets good reviews?
This book is fine for the commoner who accounts for 80% of the population. The other 20% will find this a total waste of time. Of course, the 20% of the population with brains would never even pick up this book. Every counselor I ever knew would tell me to read this book back when I was unsure of my future toward the end of my college career 15 years ago. I didn't have the money for the book, so I basically read through it at B. Dalton Booksellers in Denton, TX. What an incredible waste this book is. Instead, stop lining the pockets of this preacher and say no to this book. Anything that is a best seller in the United States must be flawed, because like I said before, 80% of the population are idiots. People need to start thinking for themselves and stop buying this garbage. If you are in the 80% idiot group, you will disagree with this review and probably buy it out of spite. Well, go ahead moron. The other 20% will know where I'm coming from, but most of you would never be enough of a loser to be reading a review on this book and even contemplating buying it. The only reason I've spent the time on this is to possibly persuade one person that this book is a scam and maybe they'll spread the word and this book will eventually go away. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book my Cosmetology School uses (2000 edition)
I bought the 1996 version of this book in June of 2000 and within one month I was signed up for cosmetology school. Then I got to school and they used the 2000 edition so I was already prepared. For those who think this book doesn't go into detail please realize that this is a textbook and it is part of a series of books for teaching. There are 2 workbooks that go along with this book. One for Theory and one for Practical. I was given a 1990 edition of this book as well by a friend of mine. The most noticable change between the 3 editions is that the 2000 edition has more actual photographs and fewer illustrations. If you are using this book for school study then I do recommend you buy the state board exam review booklet. Then when you have free time you can quiz yourself. Just remember that this book is meant to be used along with an instructor. If you are looking for a haircutting book only then I don't think you want this one. It only has about 12 pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Detailed
When I was taking Cosmetology back in the 2000-01 school year, they recommended to purchase this version of Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology. They were only available new in Canada and cost [money], and came with the theory book as well. Our teacher also had the old 1996 version of this textbook for sale, used. However, this is a better purchase. There are more pictures and colors, its not as drab as the previous version. I have to disagree with reviewers who said this is not a detailed book, I found it to be quite detailed and informative in its information. The book meant to be used in a classroom setting, where an instructor teachers and elaborates from this book. You cannot read this book and automatically cut hair, that is where the practical aspect of cosmetology comes in, when you are doing it hands on instead of reading. But this is a helpful tool for aspiring apprentices or students in cosmetology, whether you want to learn about Coloring, Perms, whatever the case, this is definately a worthwhile tool to have.

John Lucht, an executive recruiter during the past three decades for some of America's top corporations, knows what it takes to snag a new six-figure job. Rites of Passage at $100,000 to $1 Million+ is his newly revised guide to the ins and outs of a search for a job that ends in success. It promises a "comprehensive cram course in accelerating your career"--a contemporary corporate equivalent of the traditional initiation into adulthood from which it takes its title--updated for the cyber-age. And it delivers, with Lucht offering inside tips on the basic routes to a new executive-level position: personal contacts (i.e., "ask for a reference instead of a job"); networking ("never fail to get into the office of anyone whose name is mentioned to you, never depart with less than three new names"); executive recruiters ("understand their hidden financial arrangements"); direct mail ("write to the CEO or a person two levels above your target job"); and the Internet ("insert plenty of the right 'keywords' so that the computer will find your resume"). Extensive online references are also included throughout, and the material is presented in a way that's easy to understand and implement. --Howard Rothman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard
John's book is the gold standard of executive job-changing.
I just purchased my fourth copy of Rites and plan to use it to land a fourth terrific job. I discovered the Rites of Passage during my first career transition in 1989 and have followed its patented formula to multiple offers everytime. John's writing style and his thorough understanding of the transition process will make you feel as if you are sitting down and talking to an old wise friend. Thanks to John and his landmark book, my family and I have always lived a comfortable lifesyle. The Rites of Passage are a must buy for any serious executive considering a job change.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insider's view on Recruiters
The book covers the essentials of job change at the upper end of the job market. It deals with all aspects of job change, however, the unique contribution is that it provides essential reading for anybody who changes jobs through 'recruiters'. - independent of what the salary is. The value of the book lies precisely in the detailed and authoritative explanation of what is going on behind the scene, i.e. in the recruiter's mind. The author - being a recruiter himself walks the reader in detail through the potential pitfalls of dealing with a recruiter. The different ways of working with a 'retained' versus a 'contingency' recruiter are in essential knowledge for you if you ever receive a phone call.
The writing is easy going but competent, suggestions on what to do are given ranging from your first thoughts on job change to negotiating the contract.
A particular highlight for me was the Appendix: ' Behind the Scenes with the Retainer Executive Recruiter' which walks you through a fictitious recruiting process from the recruiter's standpoint.
Shortfall of book: The book could have benefitted from a more marked breakdown in major parts, rather than going directly into 20 chapters. I highly recommend the book based on its insights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great insights and great advice
I bought this book based upon the recommendations I read in one of the executive recruiting sites. The book is not only a good read, but it is full in great information for both the employed and unemployed professionals everywhere. John Lucht does a great job of explaining a great deal of recruiting behavior in a simple, easy to comprehend manner. Reading this book should help you wherever you are in your career. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars On-line Rites
John Lucht has been a recruiter for 30 years and has been writing executive guides for nearly as long. You need to get this edition as he has thoroughly updated his material to explain rules, procedures, and protocols for job-hunting on the Internet.

I was an unemployed executive for nearly a year before landing my current position and Lucht's book is the roadmap for any similar journey. He has insightful sections on resumes, cover letters, severance negotiations, outplacement, networking, references, as well as the better known how-to-guide for dealing with all stripes of recruiters.

Don't get hung-up on the title. While Lucht is most familiar with recruiting at the C-level, most of this applies equally well for managers, directors, and experienced professionals. The only criticism I have is that Lucht is focused on job-hunting in strong markets, and needs more analysis of today's humbling markets. He is fairly critical of the typical outplacement service that considers it a success when they place laid-off software executives as owner-operators of ice cream parlors and coffee shops and franchisees of muffler and transmission repair stores.

Lucht also thoughtfully debunks a lot of media myths about finding work without a resume or a network. His promotion of direct mail as a marketing tool sounds old-fashioned but it works if you understand that less than 1% of your mail will yield leads, but these are likely leads that would not have been otherwise obtained. Lucht also has built a useful website and avoids the high fees and endless cross-promotions that his competitors favor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book Lead to Fantastic Job
I can't say enough about how Rites of Passage has helped me. Mr. Lucht's approach is certainly different from the usual run-of-the-mill 'read my book and get a wonderful job' book. His thinking is RIGHT ON TARGET.

I read and reread Rites of Passage, and then worked my way through his Executive Job Changing Workbook.

Was it a lot of work on my part? Yes.

Did I get the job I wanted? No -- I got a BETTER JOB than I had originally hoped for!

Thank you, Mr. Lucht! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for basics, too general for experienced marketers
I should preface this review by saying that I am probably not the typical reader the author had in mind when writing this book. As a marketing consultant, I was recently was engaged to develop retail feasibility study and project plan for an Internet retailer planning their first bricks and mortar store. Although I have retail marketing experience, I bought this book to make sure that I had all bases covered and to get some fresh ideas on visual merchandising, retail POS systems and operations for small retailers.

This book is a great tool for a would-be entrepreneur thinking about starting their first retail business. It covers all the basics needed to plan, set up and manage a retail business, from writing the business plan to making the business a reality. The author makes good use of case studies which illustrate some of the retail successes and failures that he has observed. Another feature I found particularly useful are the tips on all aspects of retailing that could take years of trial and error to learn on your own. Last but not least the CD contains a wealth of useful forms and checklists.

Some areas that I would like to see developed in future editions are:

• Visual merchandising and store layout - more on principles and examples of floor plans
• Software suggestions - small business retail POS systems, planogram and merchandising design software

To summarize, an excellent book on retail basics and if Rick Segel writes an "Advanced Retailing for Dummies" book, I will be the first customer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for retailing entrepreneurs!
I'm a CPA in Redmond, WA with a heavy retail clientale. (I'm also the author of QuickBooks for Dummies and Quicken for Dummies.)

This is a great book for people looking to start successful retail stops. Tons of great ideas. It's also a great book for established retailers looking to improve their profitability.

My one gripe with the book is that the tax advice and information is wrong. But your accountant or attorney can and should provide that information to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to serve customers the RIGHT way
The most interesting parts of this book were the ones about customer service. Generally I HATE shopping, because salespeople are either all over you the minute you walk in the door, or else they ignore you. (I bet everyone has experienced the
you're-inconveniencing-me-while-I-gab-with-my-friend-on-the-phone syndrome!) It makes you want to buy everything from the Internet-hey....

Sorry I'm being so negative, I just feel that too many stores have forgotten that they exist TO SERVE THE CUSTOMER! Okay, I've vented and I feel better now! My point is that Retail Business Kit For Dummies HASN'T forgotten that. The author (Rick Segel) is adamant that retailers should wow their customers and be appreciative of them. I especially like the chapter on soft suggestive selling-no, it has nothing to do with sex, it's all about offering hassle-free, non-pushy service.

In closing, I think every store owner and manager should read this book. It would make the retail world a much more pleasant place for customers-which would, in turn, make the stores more profitable. Obviously, that's the bottom line.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know About Retail Businesses
Hi, shoppers. I would like to say a few words about Retail Business Kit For Dummies. I work in the retail industry, and I was drawn to this book because I heard Rick Segel speak several years ago. He was so funny and inspirational, and I really enjoyed his presentation, unlike some speeches I've heard that put me to sleep. So, I was curious about this book. Let me say that I was not disappointed. I felt that Rick's personality really came across, which made the material very fun to read. (IMHO, it doesn't matter how valuable the information is if it's written in a dry and boring style.) I think the little anecdotes and true stories that he scatters throughout are a great way to illustrate the points he makes. For example, I really liked a story he told about a jewelry store owner who sent out a very elaborate (read, expensive!) invitation to a private sale to his best 78 customers. Almost 50 of them came to the event and spent money, results that totally blew away the response he had gotten to the thousands of cheap postcards he sent out in past promotions. The moral? It pays to focus on your very best customers, even if you have to spend a little more.
Basically, I learned a lot of tips and tricks of the trade that I can share with my colleagues. What a great book! To anyone who's reading this review, check it out! It gives you a ton of great insights you'll appreciate.
Thanks for listening (well, reading!) and have a great day!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is priceless!
I loved this book! Actually, I've read several of the Dummies books and liked them all; they really do put complex information in "plain English." Retail Business Kit For Dummies is no exception. After reading it I feel that I could run right out and open up a successful store! I'm not ready to quit my day job just yet. But someday . . . ! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This will give you the lead you need !
I am a new real estate agent. Like most new agent I was VERY lost (i'm sher you know the feeling). I had no one telling me the "how to's", the "when to's", and most importantly the "why to's" of the business. Is that what I signed up for, i asked!? I was overwhelmed and nervous. I invested in books and tapes of the highest level in relation to real estate (they where very good) BUT they never gave me the BOTTOM LINE (starting for the moment you recieve |THE CERTIFICATE|to actualy thinking of making 100 000+/year)!The best investment I made was the book "YOUR FIRST YEAR IN REAL ESTATE". If you are new in the business and are looking for a mentor !? read the book. You dont know where to start !? Read the book. You want to build a solid foundation for your carreer !? Read the book. Dont be fooled by it's simingly "basic" cover, this is the book you want. Dirk Zeller's philosophy is fantastic. It is possible to work 4 days a week and still make alot of $ and have time for your family...

5-0 out of 5 stars Answered just about all of my questions, and MORE
I bought this book and one other as I was doing research to enter a new career in Real Estate Sales (from something totally different). It started out with how to "interview" potential brokers, questions to ask, and things to look for. This book was exactly what I needed to help me get my foot in the door and ask the right questions.
Also, this book talks about making and maintaining relationships with all of the different constituencies in the business in a positive, upbeat, "you can do it" tone. Not to say that you don't get the real scoop on the drawbacks as well, but overall, the tone the book is written in gives you the added push if you are at all hesitant about the industry.
I'm sure I will go back to this book time and time again.
(As of 7/2002) Three months later, I have started my career in Real Estate, and know more than at my review's first writing that Mr. Zeller speaks nothing but the truth. His plan for organizing your day, and working with only clients that will bring you business and results are DEAD ON. Also see his website for more GREAT real estate commentary and suggestions...

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand and follow
I purchased this book just prior to taking my real estate test and beginning my new career. It has helped tremendously and everything I have tried that was recommended has worked! The information is well laid out and presented in a format that is easy to follow and understand. Now, after being in this business for 6 months I have re-read the book and have picked up even more. I have recommended this book to others just starting out in their career and recommend it to anyone interested in beginning a career in real estate.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets.....
I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is considering a career in Real Estate. Dirk Zeller is a down to earth, straight shooter and has a 100% grip on how to succeed or fail in Real Estate - starting from Day-1.

After reading the book I had a chance to personally meet Dirk. His attitude and demeanor reflect his success. His book helped me to make the choice to get into Real Estate, I am following his recommendations and am having great success - and I have been at it only 3-months. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Your 1st Year in Real Estate
This is an excellent book for anyone thinking about real estate as a career. It really breaks down the basic ideas of what it takes to get started and succeed as a realtor. Choosing a company is one of the hardest decisions and Dirk leads you right thru it. I recommend this book to all new agents or agents who have been in the business for any amount of time. ... Book Description

Technical Communication represents the works of five highly respected authors, all writing in their areas of expertise. Scientific examples and assignments within a social context are used for a realistic view of communication issues. This is the only text to extensively address argument, including reasoning, credibility, persuasion, decision making, problem solving, and critical thinking. The topic of audience is also addressed more thoroughly than in any other text. The book covers the traditional parts of the technical communication course but has been updated greatly to respond to the demands that the computer places on communicating. ... Read more
