5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading! Do not miss!
As a beginning grad student who has been away from academia for several years, I found this book not only a kick to read but full of refreshingly straightforward information. I plan to follow Ms. Mentor's advice to the letter. But this isn't just a guidebook for academia. Any woman (or man!) who wants succeed -- and survive -- as a professional should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is one of those "I wish I had known that" books
I came across this book while looking for something else and picked it up because it looked interesting. It is not only interesting but very readable. It is full of excellent insight into topics from Graduate School and the job hunt to "Slouching toward Tenure," etc. As a graduate student in a technical area I was totally clueless about the politics of academia. I wish I had run across this book then. As I read through it, I had many "aha!" moments: "Aha! so _that_ is what was going on in such-and-such a situation!" Even men in academia could profit from much of the insight in this book, which is funny and well-written. Much of the advice about finding one's way through the tenure maze, for example, applies to anyone in that situation. The book contains some left-wing politics and some fairly extreme feminism. Those who enjoy that sort of thing will find it here. Those who don't will not find enough to obviate the other excellent features of this book. If you are in that political jungle called academia, and particularly if you're just starting out in it, you will find it worthwhile to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars You are what you read?
This book is a fantastic collection of scenarios and questions from the world of academia. The writer does an excellent job of bringing humor and advice to some "true to life" and some "not so true to life" stories. For those that take the book too seriously... I don't think it was intended to be the fourth source in your dissertation, but rather an extremely entertaining book to read to relieve some stress between chapters (smile)... I highly reccomend this book to anyone that works in academia.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ouch-total dissapointment
As I read this book, the mental star rating I had pictured went lower and lower. As a PhD student, this book is not useful. Mostly, because, for me...I know the difference between sexual harrasment and normal male and female interaction and do not need to read 400 letters addressing what to do if someone makes me star at their crotch or drops olives down my shirt at a holiday party. Another problem with this book is that the author flat out insults midwesterners AND people in the dept of education....so there you go....pretty hard for a gal from Chicago studying chemistry education to respect her opinions very much. According to Ms. Mentor I am boring and stupid. Thanks. I think Ms. Mentor needs to climb out of her ivory tower for 1 second and realize that the gen xers currently making their way out of grad school and academia are NOT introverted former NHS nerds who are interested in male-bashing she seems to be writing for. She presents a narrow sliver of academic life that may have been relevant in the 1970's but comes across as totally alien today.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Impeccable
Along with a group of tenured female colleagues, I take issue with MOST of the advice in this book--it's embedded with all manner of weird prejudice (fat people are better than thin people; men are always dangerous; Emily Toth is God). The book espouses feminism but violates the basic precepts of feminism--taking risks, being humane, celebrating self and others. Why does she so rarely answer questions constructively? A bunch of us suspect that she makes up the letters herself, by the way--which makes the answers even more ludicrous.

All in all, this book is a curiously defensive, gutless approach to surviving academic life--not creative or provocative or even useful in terms of practical advice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Career development expert Ron Fry focuses on how to prepare for a job interview and how to conduct yourself during the interview. While he covers some of the same ground he's covered in some of his other books and as well as the territory in other career books, such as What Color Is Your Parachute, Fry focuses helpfully on a critical job-finding skill - asking the right questions during your job interview. He tells you how to respond when the interviewer asks you, "Do you have any questions?", because your response indicates your level of interest in the job. Besides listing questions to ask or to modify to meet your own circumstances, Fry provides helpful preparatory questions you should ask yourself to clarify what kind of job you really want. We recommend this book to job seekers at the middle or lower management level. By the time you get to the executive suite, you'll know what else to ask.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not your answers, but your questions
This book does a great job of helping you ask the questions that will get you a job. As a training manager, who trains managers and executives on how to interview, I feel I am qualified to say this book works.

I know we look for people who can ask the right question. This book is a wonderful resource once you get the interview. This leaves us with the question, "How do you get an interview?" Simple, know the type of job you want and pursue it, if you do not know what type of job you want you may want to read the classic, "How to find your dream job and make it a reality." By Jason McClure.

Read this book, and learn how to ask questions for your job interview. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but...
I quickly grew tired with the author's leftist political views, which she felt compelled to insert in nearly every chapter. And unions? She's all for them, and doesn't seem to understand that there are those that want nothing to do with them. Also, she completely negates those with ASN nursing degrees, relagating them to being slightly above NA's on the nursing food chain. No mention of LPN's at all.

Which is disappointing, since I am enrolled in an LPN program, with a goal of becoming a PRN - the care I received at two Spokane hospitals (during the birth of my children) was the turning point of my interest in nursing.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book for those thinking about nursing
This book was great reading material. I've already made up my mind to become a nurse. The book is directed to those who are considering a career in nursing. However, I enjoyed reading it just the same and the ideas presented reinforced my commitment to nursing.

One interesting point is that Janet Katz drives home the need for leadership within nursing and how nursing can be as versatile as you want it to be. This really helped me because I now realize how I can make nursing fit in my life.

One captivating chapter is named "You don't have to like blood to be a nurse" or something like that. For a brief moment, I thought that not liking blood would be detrimental to my nursing career. In her book, Janet demonstrates why this doesn't have to be the case.

Another point covered is a comparison of associate's, diploma and BSN programs and Janet does a good job doing this. She also describes education beyond the RN degree which opened up my mind to countless possibilities. I read it in a day!

5-0 out of 5 stars Majoring in Nursing
An excellent book for anyone looking into a nurisng career. Very informative and easy to read. Ms. Katz works hard to give her readers an accurate description of the profession.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Information Source
Majoring in Nursing helped me with deciding the steps to take to see if nursing would be a good career for me. I am currently trying to decide if I should change careers and the book covers nursing as a second career and the advantages and disadvantages to starting nursing at an older age. It also discusses steps to take before putting in all the time on a degree (such as volunteer work) to see if nursing is the kind of job you thought it would be. Details of the different educational paths to an RN are clearly discussed as well as the various types of jobs available in nursing and of course the many problems (insurance, etc).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview For Career Research
This book is great for those considering nursing as a career. It gives an overview of many aspects of the profession from school requirements to dealing with problems. The best part of the book is the appendix which contains references to books and organizations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for legal job hunt!
Law students and lawyers need to look no further than this book to get a clear picture of the best places to work with a law degree. The author has found the best firms and other institutions and explains why these employers have risen to the ranks of the premier places to pursue a legal career. She includes large and small firms in cities around the country. This book will help anyone looking for their first job and those thinking about making a move.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good resource
I read this book before I went to law school and during my recruiting season, and found it to be a very helpful and comprehensive resource. The book discusses many different employers, ranging from law firms, companies, clerkships, government jobs (including some agencies that people may not be aware of), small firms, public interest jobs, trade associations and law school administration jobs. Most of the companies/firms, etc. listed contain a brief factual description of the workplace, comments by lawyers and a description of the workplace environment. There is also advice on how to obtain some of the more unusual positions.

Although I usually do not like to comment on reviews written by other people, there are a few things written about this book that I believe are unfair to the author. First of all, yes some of the salary numbers and hiring numbers are out of date - this is to be expected when these numbers change yearly. That information is easily found on the internet. Second, please do not let people's political agendas distract you from a wonderful resource. The DOJ is still a great place to work in terms of legal jobs - any lawyer who wants a job where they only take on cases they fully support will probably be disappointed in the profession. Next, Ms. Walton made a strong effort to find firms all around the country to profile - she explicitly says that she could not find many NYC firms that fit her criteria (and to the person who complained about the ethics of Texas firms - you might want to check out the ethics of NYC firms!). Finally, Ms. Walton's point about the foreign service is not that it is the "best job" for lawyers wanting to work internationally, but rather one that many law students don't consider. She specifically recognizes the fact that American law students can work outside the U.S. in law firms, but mentions the Foreign Service as another excellent option (and it is absolutely true that many students who say they want to practice "international law" discover that they don't really like "international business law" in a firm). Finally, having worked at CEELI just two summers ago, I can verify that their expansion into nations other than Eastern Europe and the NIS states is very recent and therefore could not have been published in the book when it went to press. Again, the book was meant to be used as a resource and jumping-off point, and updated information can easily be found on the internet.

I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking of entering law school, in law school, or practicing law. It is an excellent career resource and may open your eyes to possibilities you did not realize were out there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware . . . .
I actually worked at one of the places she suggests (a government agency), and it was the worst place I have ever worked. It had a very high turnover rate, especially for a non-firm employer. I got the impression that the recruiter was a friend of Kimm's. Employers can simply schmooze the author into putting them into her book--this how many attorneys get on those "Best attorneys under 40" type lists.

1-0 out of 5 stars The view from the West
I agree with the reviewer from Il that this is not a helpful book, and that it was written in such a way that it would become outdated quickly. Culling information from "administrators" is all fine and good, but the book would greatly benefit from having been authored by a lawyer who had been in the trenches in more ways than as a mere summer associate--Ms. Walton's experience with practicing law. I am thinking, for example, of D. Aron's classic book on alternatives to practicing law, a book which benefits greatly from the author's experience of having practiced law. Such a perspective would allow one to more carefully explore firm politics and how a new associate might deal with them, for example. I also agree with the other reviewer's underscoring the impact of regionalism. In California, for example, we routinely hire prospects from California law schools that are not highly ranked. This is because we know that such schools turn out fine lawyers by having come against them or worked beside them. (I'd like to think it is not because we feel inferior to applicants from better ranked schools elsewhere, a problem the other reviewer hinted at as far as his experience in the South.)

1-0 out of 5 stars The View From a West Coast Litigator
I agree with the reviewer from Il. who criticized the book as out of date and not helpful. There definitely is a middle America bias to the book. It is not for someone who seriously wants to explore 'radical' public interest careers, for example. It is also not, like Aron's classic book, about a wide variety of things one can do with a law degree besides practicing law. Sure, there are some examples, but not many. There is regionalism all over the country, as the other reviewer pointed out, not just in the South. (His example.) In California, for example, California schools--even those that are not high pedigree--win out over higher ranked schools from other areas of the country besides legal employers tend to choose people whom they can identify with in terms of education and other things. Ms. Walton's book might have been more helpful if she had ever practiced law besides in the capacity of a summer associate. Asking "adminitrators" for data is a good start, but they often can't advise in terms of firm politics etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well-Written, Clear Guide for Executive Resumes
This book clearly, quickly, and concisely, takes you through how to develop an executive resume and cover letter. It outlines the purpose of various resume elements, and explains why the elements of an executive resume are different than the resume format you learned when you graduated from college.

Well over half of this 300+ page book is sample resumes, and they are really outstanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ FOR SENIOR EXECS/FUTURE EXECS/MGRS/PROFESSIONALS
As a somewhat cynical New Yorker jaded by the mediocrity of most career and job search books, I was pleasantly surprised at the excellence of William Montag's CareerJournal.com Resume Guide for $100,000+ Executive Jobs. The book was deservedly named "Editor's Choice" for September 2002 through December 2002 by the Editor in Chief and General Manager of CareerJournal from The Wall Street Journal. The book, done in partnership with The Wall Street Journal, is based on Mr. Montag's firsthand experience as a professional writer and outplacement counselor to the 50 real-life clients featured in the book. I particularly like the fact that each of the sample resume/letter packages featured throughout the book represents a real-life client that Mr. Montag has served and helped over the past decades. Unlike the majority of career books that include sample resumes and letters written by people other than the author, each and every letter/resume package in this book was originally researched and prepared by Mr. Montag himself. The bottom line is that I followed the book because every recommended step in this text was personally market-tested and proven by the author himself. He backs up every word with firsthand case history experience. The power packaging in Part I of the book is followed by quality chapters featuring the author's reality-based Expansionist Theory--an on target formula for executing an aggressive job search--and the 24/7 Online Job Search Directory featuring the best of the best career and job search Web sites on the Internet. The author also delineates a step-by-step process for registering with CareerJournal.com, the Wall Street Journal's official career Web site. Add this book to your library today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A priceless book going for 12 bucks!
This really is everything I had hoped for and most likely everything you're hoping for too if you're reading this. Basically the book consists of various interviews with some of the comic industries best and brightest. You've got everyone from Neil Gaiman and Frank Miller (living legends) to Joe Kelly and Devin Grayson (upcoming stars). The tips and stories revealed herein are both touching and fascinating. If you're an aspiring comic writer or even just a fan of some of the listed writers this is really a must-have, that deserves a place right up there on your comic wrack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent round-up of top-notch talents
If you're looking for information about how to write comic book scripts, this book should be tops on your list. Through interviews with several bright stars on the comics scene, we are treated to a fairly in-depth treatment of how they work, how they got started, some of the problems they've faced, and more. Of particular interest are the answers to the questions about the "method" used by each of these writers to actually get their scripts down on paper. The discussion isn't limited to mere "plot-style" vs. "full-script style". The writers provided a detailed view of how they sit down and begin the task of writing stories in comic-book format -- from outlining, to thumbnail sketches, to actual scripting, the discussion on these and other topics is invaluable.

I admit that I haven't heard of some of the folks interviewed here, but I read every one, and can honestly say that there's something of value in every single interview. Interesting and insightful -- you won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-rounded collection
Despite the abscence of any writers of color and the inclusion of a single female, this is a well-rounded collection of in-depth interviews with fascinating insights into process, inspiration, motivation, philosophy and, in some cases, barely contained egomania. A must-have for aspiring writers and fanboys alike. ... Read more

Book Description

Tom Peters--brilliant, original, and perhaps the most inspiring and listened-to business thinker of our time--has a lot on his mind these days. And he wants to share it in The Circle of Innovation.

The world of business is in a permanent state of flux, he argues, a state of chaos in which constant innovation is the only survival strategy--for the individual and for the organization. And he presents here a lifesaving handbook--both provocative and practical--designed to turn any organization into a perpetual innovation machine.

In 400 seminars in 47 states and 22 countries in the last five years, Peters has reexamined, refined, and reinvented his views on innovation. Now he brings those seminars--and his passion--to the reader in a landmark book. It is meant, he writes, to both "terrify" and "enlighten." These are "times of matchless peril for those who fail to grasp the nettle...and times of matchless opportunity for those who do."

To keep us alert, limber, and ready for action, he provokes and cajoles in chapter after chapter. Among his institutions and revelations:

  • We Are All Michelangelos. He shows how to transform every "jobholder" into a full-fledged businessperson.
  • All Value Comes from the Professional Services. How to convert sluggish staff units into Vital Centers of Intellectual Capital Accumulation.
  • The System is the Solution. How to build great systems--which go far beyond nuts and bolts.
  • Create Waves of Lust. Quality is not the automatic advantage it recently was. There is a pressing need to reverse the rising tide of product and service "commoditization."
  • Tommy Hilfiger Knows. In a crowded marketplace, branding is far more important than ever before.
  • It's a Woman's World. How to capitalize on the fact that women purchase/are purchasing agents for well over half of U.S. commercial and consumer goods.
  • Little Things Are the Only Things. As the Blight of Sameness encroaches on market after market, design is often the best tool in services or manufacturing for sustainable differentiation.
  • We're Here to Live Life Out Loud. Why transformational leaders of the future must have laser-like focus, tell the truth, and live on the lunatic fringe.

The hallmarks of Tom Peters legend are an insatiable curiosity, an agile intellect, a pragmatic perspective, and an uncanny ability to gauge the global zeitgeist. These qualities are all brought to bear as Peters sets out to engage, enrage, and ultimately empower his readers, amid forces that are reshaping not only business but every aspect of human experience. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of P. T. Barum pizazz, breaking all book 'rules'.
Peters zeros in on innovation as the touchstone for success, along with a passionate presentation of fifteen other related ideas such as: distance is dead; destruction is cool; we are all Michelangelos; welcome to the white - collar revolution; the intermediary is doomed; and the system is the solution. The book's visual layout model's its theme which is - It is the end of the world as we know it, so whatever made you successful in the past won't in the future. What, then, can you do? The answer is...innovation! This is another WOW book, exuding the excitement and novelty that makes Tom Peters, himself, a living example of what he passionately and entertainingly writes about. Peters delivers content in a form that breaks all book 'rules,' using a plethora of P. T. Barnum pizazz. Among business books, that's innovative! I don't think Peters expects or wants you to read this book, but to experience it. It is a bit more like a roller-coaster than a book, with zigs and zag! s and lots of zip. Still, for all its flare, this is not a ground-breaking work, falling short of Peters' Liberation Management.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Innovate the Tom Peters Way
Be warned that if you like unusual formats, you'll find this book refreshing. If you hate anything unusual, you may not like this book.

The Circle of Innovation is written in slide book form. This is the form that consultants use for seminars. Each exhibit that the seminar attendees will see is included, along with a page of script that covers the content of the exhibit. The result is highly enjoyable, as you vicariously imagine being in the room with Tom Peters, the world's most sought-after business speaker.

The exhibits are wonderfully funny and evocative, and use all kinds of visual tricks to get and keep your attention. I had people all over the plane looking over my shoulder to see them, as I read the book on a recent flight.

Tom Peters also walks his talk, and really lives with passion -- which strongly comes through in this book. His interpretations of the world are almost always tied to quotes from important thinkers and business leaders, which gives the book a relevance and immediacy that a more intellectual book would have lacked.

I found this book to be very satisfying to read. It affected me at a very fundamental level, so I could tell that I was "getting" the message. The result is a most impressive example of a way to communicate through books. The principles seem to be sound in most cases (although not all markets are dominated by women purchasers -- such as boxing gloves, football tickets, Viagra, etc. -- but many are, such as cars), and they should stimulate your thinking to expand the scope of the innovations you think about.

The book could have been improved with a consideration of processes that work better than others for getting the innovation work done. For that assistance, you will have to look elsewhere. In the meantime, do read, think about, enjoy, and apply the lessons of The Circle of Innovation.

Another good book on innovation is Peter Drucker's Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent reading
Don't be overwhelmed by the size of this book. You can go through it rather quickly since most of the pages have graphical text - big fonts and just like PPT presentations. If you are not used to or don't like graphics and presentations, you may have a hard time with this book (as you can see from other reviews). But it is kind of a breakthough book in terms of the style.
Most of the ideas are very useful, most of the examples are very genuine in how it relates to the theory.

For those who may be annoyed with the style of this book, my only request is, look beyond the style for the content or the gist.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good and original
This book is both good and original. The part that is good is not original, and the part that is original is not good.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!
"The Circle" was recommended to me by a colleauge just a few short weeks ago and I must say it has changed my life in a way I would not have thought possible. It has changed the way I look at my job, my customers, people in other service industries and life in general. I firmly believe that you would be hard pressed to not find some sort of nugget in this book that would make each and every one of you say "WOW!!! I never thought of this like that!?!?!" It is an awesome guide to business and to life, the only warning I have is to be careful if you decide to pick it up because it holds the power to forever change the way you do business or live life and if you aren't ready for the changes that will come they could be mindboggling. To all who choose to grab this and embrace it - I wish you Good Luck and hope it affects you in the same ways it has me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good book for students
This book is a good overview of what it means to be a graphic designer. It goes through the different areas of design, and different job positions.
Everything you need to know about the design world is in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat vexing, but a nice casual browse nonetheless
There is a lot of good to be said for this book. But the thing that jumps out and slaps me in the face, right off, maybe because I have dealt with new design students and new professionals for the past several years, is a few dumb comments such as "If you are going to be a good designer, fine. If you aren't don't bother. The field is full of mediocre talents as it is."

And how, pray tell, does one know whether one is going to "be good" during the first year of ones study? --Or even during the first few years of ones professional practice, when sweeping out the place may be included in your job description, and hands-on real world work may come your way slowly and in small discreet bits? And doesn't every creative person at one point or another question the worth and validity of what he or she is doing, EVEN after recognition has started rolling in and they understand that their work is generally perceived by their peers as good? Further, I would ask whether everyone HAS to be a Saul Bass or a Neville Brody. Isn't design a broad enough field to encompass the work of those with less Olympian ambition? Comments such as the one above are relatively few and far between, to be certain. But where on earth was the editor when pompous uninsightful stuff like this flew in under the radar? Although the sheer snideness of the comment may make many jaded pros cheer, I have to wonder what useable information this kind of comment contains for the neophyte at whom the book is supposedly aimed? --To show that a lot of jaded pros have a really bad attitude?

I do not favor the Pollyanna view whether we are talking art or careers. But I believe it is impossible to know how you will fare at something before you have been doing it a while. Thinking otherwise --for example, that a teacher in a design 101 class can tell you whether you are "any good" (and I have seen or heard about many students asking this very question)-- just intimidates and discourages people from being brave enough to give the life that they would see for themselves a try. To me, that is way too limiting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Overview for a career in graphic design
I am a recent college graduate looking to get into a graphic design career and I found this guide to be excellent. At first I was a bit skeptical because it is heavy on interviews from practitioners but the later sections really delve into the business climate, how design companies grow and develop, and what career trajectories are like. Really, I do recommend this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wide range. Good read. Heavy on interviews
The good part was its breadth covering more than just 2D design (which is what I thought graphic design was before reading the book!). There are interviews with designers from each field that they talk about. A bit too many interviews in my opinion which is the weak point about the book. Nevertheless, looking at the other books available, it's worth getting to some degree.

This book rocks! Once you read it you'll know WAAAAAZZZZZUP! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent For What It's Designed To Do
THE MANAGER'S BOOK OF QUESTIONS is an invaluable resource for developing an in-depth, probing but fair, job interview. It provides questions in a variety of categories designed to assist the employer/manager/supervisor to identify the most qualified applicant and the "best fit" for the position. Questions are organized into sections for the purpose of determining a variety of employee characteristics and attributes. For example, some of the sections help identify motivation, the applicant's concept of teamwork, their ability to handle stress, and to think quickly. Other questions explore background, past work history, and salary expectations.

I recently was given a very short timeline to interview applicants for three different positions without having any previous questions available. I used THE MANAGER'S BOOK OF QUESTIONS as the basis for interviews for each of the three positions. There was enough variety in the questions so each interview was customized to fit the needs of each position. It gave me confidence to ask professional and relevant questions and some of the interviewees even commented about how tough but fair the questions were.

After using THE MANAGER'S BOOK OF QUESTIONS and experiencing success first-hand, I highly recommend it for anyone serious about conducting quality job interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars When it's your turn to ask the questions
If you liked the Manager's Book of Questions, you might want to check out a sequel: 201 Best Questions to Ask on Your Interview. At some point in the interview, the interviewer will ask you if you have any questions. If you don't, you may as well kiss the job goodbye. Interviewers these days evaluate you as much by the questions you ask as the answers you give. So this book provides some of the proven questions that you can ask to show that you are rady to add value to the company from Day One.

2-0 out of 5 stars A simple guideline book!
I was dispointed for this book. A lot of interview questions, but only very few analysis.I don't recommend this book to anyone.
