Book Description

Women make up almost half of today's labor force, but in corporate America they don't share half of the power. Only four of the Fortune 500 company CEOs are women, and it's only been in the last few years that even half of the Fortune 500 companies have more than one female officer.

A major reason for this? Most women were never taught how to play the game of business.

Throughout her career in the supercompetitive, male-dominated media industry, Gail Evans, one of the country's most powerful executives, has met innumerable women who tell her that they feel lost in the workplace, almost as if they were playing a game without knowing the directions.

She tells them that's exactly the case: Business is indeed a game, and like any game, there are rules to playing well. For the most part, Gail has discovered, women don't know them.

Men know these rules because they wrote them, but women often feel shut out of the process because they don't know when to speak up, when to ask for responsibility, what to say at an interview, and a lot of other key moves that can make or break a career.

Now, in her book Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman, Gail Evans reveals the secrets to the playbook of success and teaches women at all levels of the organization--from assistant to vice president--how to play the game of business to their advantage.

Sharing with humor and candor her years of lessons from corporate life, Gail Evans gives readers practical tools for making the right decisions at work.Among the rules you will learn are:

• How to Keep Score at Work
• When to Take a Risk
• How to Deal with the Imposter Syndrome
• Ten Vocabulary Words That Mean Different Things to Men and Women
• Why Men Can be Ugly, and You Can't
• When to Quit Your Job

Evans is not saying that every woman has to play exactly by men's rules--not at all. Women bring many inherent traits to the workplace that can provide them with a potential advantage over men, such as a woman's ability to form relationships, or her intuition. But women do need to know the basic rules so that they can understand the full consequences of their every action and how it makes an impact on their career.

An honest and practical handbook that reveals important insights into relationships between men and women and work, Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman, is a must-read for every woman who wants to leverage her power in the workplace.

Could be subtitled; How Not To Shoot Yourself in the Foot. I'd like to join in with the positive reviews of this book. I'm a business school student and I read this book on the recommendation of a visiting female executive. I've since lent it out to my classmates and have watched it be passes around from woman to woman. We love it! Evans offers simple, easy to relate to examples of behavior women adopt in the workplace that can be "career limiting." She openly challenges the reader to see which of her observations fit and which don't to each woman's unique situation. A well balanced, honest set of suggestions and observations that will benefit any woman seeking to advance in her career.

5-0 out of 5 stars EVERY DAUGHTER SHOULD GIVE THIS BOOK TO HER MOTHER
If you are a woman and have ever needed a reason to stop taking everything everybody says or does personally, this book says it. This is the guidebook to business that baby-boomer-females-in-the-businessplace never had. Gail Evans has lived what she preaches and speaks in a language women can understand. I was shaking my head "yes" throughout the book, as I recognized my own situation and frustrations in workplace. I knew it had something to do with my gender, but other than pointing the finger of blame at all men, I could not pinpoint what was happening in this male-created domain. I guess I thought I was the only person (read woman) who couldn't figure out the rules for success in the workplace. I also needed to hear the words from a very successful woman who learned by doing. I learned that I can still be a woman, but succeed in the male-created, male-dominated business world, and not feel like an imposter...which is exactly what one of her chapters deals with. You don't have to be a sell-out, but quit taking everything so damn personal....this is business. This is not a book written by a man who thinks he knows what women are thinking. And, it is not a book written by a woman who is so well-connected, or glamorous and beautiful, that you would wonder how she could not be a success in the businessplace. This is a book written by "one of us", and concentrates on exactly why many women struggle so hard to succeed in her job, no matter what that job is. If you are a manager, or a clerk, or anything in between, this book will help you as a female. I am giving a copy of this book to every working woman that I know...with a few exceptions; those who have already figured out the rules. Now I know why they are so successful, and it has nothing to do with their luck and my unluckiness. I feel so much better and unburdened after reading this book. I am going to keep it at my bedside and use it as my affirmation support..."I will not personalize workplace issues...I will not.....".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
As a computer professional without a college degree, I found that I had learned some of the rules already by watching other men and then evaluating their responses to my behavior. I moved up the ladder by expecting more of myself and acting more like the men around me. The one thing I learned is if you want to be treated as an equal, you must ACT like an equal. Too many women whine and grouse about how they don't get what they think they deserve, when that is exactly what they are getting because while they're moving their lips, they're not DOING anything. My mother always told me that a closed mouth gathers no foot. Read the book, learn the basic rules, and then PRACTICE them whether you like it or not -- that is, if you really want to get ahead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome and inspirational book
It seems only logically that girls and boys are brought up differently throughout their lives but most women seem to forget this too easily. This books brings the reader step-by-step through the "whys" behind female actions in the professional or personal arenas. It is not wrong for a woman to act a certain way but knowing what drives this action and how it is looked upon by the public is a window into the professional soul of a majority of women. It may not give women step-by-step instructions on how to get into the CEO chair but it will help women evaluate on a more sincere level why they do certain things or act certain ways and how they can change these actions to work for them instead of against them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Raters with "how this relates to MY life" as the criteria:
In contrary to what a lot of negative response I've read on here, that had denoted the book's values due to the fact that it carries sexist qualities, shows no sympathy to a woman's choice of lifestyle, and that the book is not written for a generalized community in a last-generation point of view: This book is not meant to be a pat on your back to make you feel better about your womanhood. If you want that, there are soap opera magazines out there teaching you how to raise your children. There are also other great books out there that are targetted towards the younger generation.

Gail Evan did not once say "this book is targetted for everyone". She's talking to the women who wants to succeed in the business sense, in a man's style. It represents her insights from her long travel, and it is her belief from experience that these are the issues that held women back from achieving the status they want. This book is for the women out there who is willing to make a change in life so to reach to a higher level in the game. It's not for sulking women who wants to juggle the 12098723 priorities of family and friends before business. (In that case, the book for you is "the 7 habits of highly effective people) Women who decides to rate this book should first put themselves in a mindset that this is not Oprah. As the title reinforces Gail Evan's standpoint: PLAY LIKE A MAN. Most men who play in the field don't COMPLAIN that they want to stay home 8 hours a day for their children, and they don't relate themselves to their bar buddies' private life in every conversation.

The book simply gives you the unspoken jargons men made up and Gail's interpretation of the terms. It doesn't tell you "THIS, is the lifestyle that'll be your ULTIMATE LIFE-LOVING experience." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Coherent and Accessible
A friend of mine recommended this book as a solid introduction to graphic design. The author, Lisa Graham, covers the principles of design effectively and even throws in some unexpectedly funny explanations that really make the point. For example, the beginning of the Balance chapter is hilarious and made me realize that a page really can make a person feel weird, if it isn't designed using the design principles. Once I read that balance chapter, I realized that many of her illustrations also were surprisingly humerous, and reveals what must be a delightful sense of humor.

If you buy this book, keep in mind that the humor is used to support the points Graham makes, and is not the sole focus of the book. This is after all a design book and makes some serious and informative points.

Perhaps what is most effective about this book is the thorough explanations she gives on why a design works and why it doesn't work. This is a refreshing change from many other introductory design books that I looked at where the primary focus of the text seemed to be to show off pretty pictures. Pretty pictures are nice, but WHY do the designs work? WHY don't they work. Basics of Design tells you why, and in such a wonderfully understandable way that you remember, and easily apply what Graham teaches.

Good job Lisa. When are you going to write more books on graphic design? I'll be sure to keep an eye out for more of your work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Beginners
Having wasted much time looking through a number of other books supposedly covering the same subject, this book is a welcome relief.

This book covers in adequate detail the essentials and the basic principles of design, including emphasis, contrast, balance, alignment, repetition, flow, the use of images, color, typography, etc. It gives enough explanation with examples for one to get a good grounding on the subject, without getting too technical, keeping the book highly readable. A part of the book also focuses on specific design situations, including logos, flyers, newsletters, resumes, etc.

Perfect for anyone with no formal training in design, but would like to improve his/her understanding of design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful
I am a complete dunce at design (or at least I was). Whatever the optical equivalent to a "tin ear" is, I have it. In this book Ms. Graham gives step-by-step simple and yet logical and practical instruction on how to make one's designs both attractive and effective. Her writing style often made me feel as if I were being given advice by a "friend in the design business." I began using the principles that she teaches in my web pages and flyer designs before I was even half-way through the book. The improvements that I saw in my abilities were amazing.

This book has (the basics of) everything: typography, contrast, color, flow, emphasis, etc. Most of the books I had examined prior to finding this little gem were nothing more than over-sized "picture books" with writing in the margins, I couldn't bring myself to spend the money on so little information (but they sure were pretty). This book, on the other hand, is mostly text with small, well-selected illustrations, and at the end of every chapter the author gives several "case-studies" of the current topic and walks the reader through each one.

I cannot imagine a better book for someone new to design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand
This book makes it easy to understand typography and layout. The author gives the reader a good grounding in typography and the basic principles of design, making it easy to improve your own designs and pages. Her explanations makes it a lot easier to pick the right type to go with the image and the topic. My designs have improved after reading this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
This book claims to be the follow-up to Solution Selling, by Bosworth.

There is a great deal of discussion about which book is better. In my mind, they are simply for different audiences if you want to compare them as simply 'sales books'.

Selling with Integrity is by far my #1 recommendation to someone who is not, or does not want to be, a professional salesperson. It is much more simple than Solution Selling and easy to remember in front of customers.

I own an agency for OD/HR consulting and have read HUNDREDS of books, manuals, etc on selling. I am especially interested in books about selling high dollar intangibles (HR consulting is incredibly intagible).

I am paid by a number of my consultants to provide marketing and 'sales' coaching and this is the book I recommend. If you want to go deeper and have more structure to your sales, this is not necessarily your book. Look to Selling Solutions.

However, Selling With Integrity resonates deeply with the solid principles at it's core and a new mentality of looking at sales - helping the buyer buy, or becoming a 'Buying Facilitator'.

I consider myself a professional sales person and when I need a quick boost and/or self pep talk on sales, I pick up Selling with Integrity and remember why I like it so much.

My personal litmus test is 'Would I buy the book again after I have read it, but pay double the price?'

The answer is absolutely, no question, YES!! Buy the book. For almost any price, it is an absolute bargain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book! It's full of "uncommon sense" about selling
Sharon Drew Morgen cuts through the myths and b.s. about business and selling in a powerful, clear, stimulating book that should be "must reading" for anyone who sells for a living.

She gets at the real thinking/emotional process at the heart of the buying decision better than anyone else I've read - then translates these insights into a breakthrough sales approach that is genuinely "win/win." What a powerful alternative to the rat race of manipulation and resistance most of us were taught selling had to be! The real challenge would be for executives and sales managers to read this book and then allow its principles to govern how salespeople are compensated and "motivated."

A compelling book from an author of deep spirituality and years of success as a business person.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the approach of a true consultant.
I loved the book so much that I spent my own money to take her weekend long course. It was not cheap. But you get what you pay for. The concepts here are invaluable. The hard part is putting it into practice.

The key is letting go of your "sales" agenda and actually adopting or discovering the customers agenda... while maintaining total objectivity. Really getting to the point of wanting a prospect to make their best decision is hard. If their issues can be solved without using your products or services, that's their best decision. So if they can solve thier problems with the resources they currently have in place (and don't need you) so be it. You have to walk away... or ask for referrals to someone else who might benefit from going through the process.

If you have prior sales training of any sort, you have to unlearn first and empty your cup. Repition is the mother of all learning, so be prepared to practice, practice, practice. It's been very difficult for me. But buying this book was one of the best decisions in my sales career.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's the best sales book?
As you might guess, I've thought about this for quite a while. As a sales coach, I need to be able to work with a variety of clients trained in a variety of sales paradigms. And just when I think I've found the final answer, something new comes along. That's why you see so many books listed on my web page; they all have value and each has a piece of the overall puzzle.

For my personal selling and marketing, though, there's one book that stands out above all the rest. That book is Sharon Drew Morgen's Selling With Integrity. As I've noted elsewhere, I think 2003 will be known as the Year of the Sales Professional, and I can't think of a better way to start it off than to get this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Colorful Pathway to Success
An exceptional work that is a delightful "read". In a very friendly yet literate style, Ms. Kalil lays an easy foundation for finding harmony with our career focus and personality. The included card set is an amazingly simple way to find your direction and learn about your "True Colors". The book is truly informative, and very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Magic of Follow Your True Colors in Career Planning
My most recent college career planning class was instructed to purchase the book Follow Your True Colors to the Work You Love as well as the workbook. The students were given weekly homework reading assignments from the book. During class they completed individual and group exercises from the workbook. The book provided a framework for understanding the career planning process based on an individual's true color personality profile. The workbook provided an opportunity for the students to apply the principles learned from reading the book. In conjunction, the two books complimented one another and increased the students' understanding and application of the concepts.

During the course, several students approached me independently and commented on how much they enjoyed the readings and exercises they were assigned. Some individuals felt that the author was speaking directly to them and their circumstances. Other students were amazed by the author's uncanny ability to pinpoint their personality traits and characteristics.

However, I had no idea until I read the finals submitted by the students at the end of the class how universally these two books had impacted people. Even students who were initially skeptical about the usefullness of this class and its approach to career planning were quite pleased with the insight and information they had learned about themselves. Overall, students benefited greatly from reading and using these exercises for self discovery and understanding presented in the book and workbook Follow Your True Colors to the Work You Love. These two books will definetly be required reading for my future students!

5-0 out of 5 stars I am a green
Thank you. Your book has truly changed my life. Family and friends have always stated "you think to much", "Don't analyze me", and "You have a hard time getting in touch with your emotions". I have always been a perfectionist at work and have been hard on myself. I have to be competent in what I do and I love a challenge. Once I was able to recognize my true colors I was able to understand me!

When I read Chapter 6 on Green Personality - Knowledge is Power- I saw myself. My true color. What I represent in actual writing. Reading that chapter helped me to understand who I am. Something I often question. I have to accept I am green to full accept myself and that is deep. I have to realize my strengths and weaknesses.

I see how my weaknessness have caused problems in my work, family, and relationships. I have to work on these weaknesses to have inner peace.

Your book has helped me to realize a lot about myself. Your book gives me the guidance to explore my life and see what I am missing. I realize I have been missing a lot. I have always been hard on myself. I push and push myself. Everything I do has to be perfect.... I am so quickly to judge things around me that may not be perfect. I did not realize I have prided my 30 years on being perfect and having an answer for every question. Sometimes in life there ar no answers. I have been searching my inner soul and realize I must change to be truly happy. I realize I have let my critical self hurt me.

I want to thank you Carolyn Kalil for coming into my life. Your book has let me see where I need to go instead of where I am. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kalil's Book Is Super-Fantastic!
After reading "True Colors", I immediately surveyed roughly 100 people (some family members included). The results were astonishing. Nearly everyone's personality paralleled Carolyn's "colors inventory" with sure exactness. Many folk spend their valuable time making careers out of occupations that are simply perpendicular to their major purpose in life. This book, I found to be intelligent, realistic and a page-turner. It's quite enjoyable. Ms. Kalil's work is the nicest piece since Myers-Briggs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Using temperament you can find the work best suited to you.
Book Review by Jack Falt. Kalil, Carolyn, Follow Your True Colors to the Work You Love: The Popular Method for Matching Your Personality to Your Career, BookPartners, Inc., Wilsonville, 1998, 200 pp.

As far as I know, this is the first book published that is based on Don Lowry's True Colors™ personality system. And Carolyn Kalil's book is an excellent one to become acquainted with this system. An additional bonus is that her book contains the four temperament cards and the word cluster ranking system used to determine one's true colours. The scoring produces a hierarchy of colours for each person from one's strongest to weakest colour. (The weakest colour is like the Inferior Function in MBTI.)

The developer of True Colors was Don Lowry, an entrepreneur and student of David Keirsey. He used Keirsey's four temperaments as the basis of the True Colors system. By using four colourful cards depicting clowns performing colour related activities, Lowry developed a system that can be used with all ages from kindergarten children to multinational company executives. The four colours are: Orange - Sensing Perceiving, Gold - Sensing Judging, Blue - Intuitive Feeling, and Green - Intuitive Thinking.

Kalil's book is written in a very personal style with lots of anecdotal material. She describes her own life and how her first True Colors workshop with Lowry was so tremendously helpful in understanding herself and enhancing her own self-esteem. As an educator she has used the system extensively, and has utilized this experience as the basis of her book.

Kalil concept of career education is based on the theory that you can't know what you want to do until you know who you are. She describes each of the four colours in separate chapters, looking at basic colour personality, goals and ideals, and how men, women, and children of that colour behave. An added feature is how each colour acts when one is out-of-esteem (or what MBTI calls being-in- the-grip).

Having described the four colours, Kalil then applies this to the world of work. She looks at the basic needs of each colour and describes the path to best satisfy these needs. She also looks at the values, natural gifts and talents, and most suitable career choices for each colour. She urges the reader to tie it all together in a mission statement, and has a exercise to help you to do this. These careers are just suggestions and she does not imply that anyone is limited in any way.

Recognizing how our upbringing can be a negative influence, Kalil has a chapter on facing the past and being aware of our negative programming. She includes an exercise on how to rewrite your life script. She also concludes the book with a chapter on harmonizing the four colours in our world. Each of the four colours has a useful function to perform.

I found the book an interesting book to read, and felt it would be useful for late high school age to adult, and wish I had had it available for my Grade 11 Personality Development and Career Planning course when I was teaching. People unaware of MBTI or Temperament will find it easy to understand and will likely discover it gives them a boost to their self-esteem. No matter what stage of life you are at, this book could be an eye-opener in your career quest. For some, it may give them the courage to make needed changes in their lives, and for others, help them explain why they chose the career they did.

    5-0 out of 5 stars This book's a winner!
LYNN O'SHAUGHNESSY is a terrific wirter who has written a book that combines remarkable readability with comprehensive coverage of financial aspects of retirement. As in her prior book THE UNOFFICIAL GUIDE TO INVESTING and her most recent book THE INVESTING BIBLE, she puts her journalist's skills to good use having thoroughly researched this subject and written for a spectrum of readers ranging from those first approaching the subject to those already quite sophisticated.

While lots of others have written about calculating how much you need to have (or to save) for retiremeent and about stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, she covers these beautifully but also covers oft neglected topics: finding the right financial experts, investing and spending strategies during retirement, a nice introduction to estate planning and trusts, managing the family dynamics of inheritance, and the role of charitable giving in retirement income and estate planning. She has also included a thorough and well researched "resource guide" listing by topics the best of names, addresses, phone numbers, and website addresses for further help and study.

Just how good is this book? Good enough that we've given it as a present to good friends who also hope to one day retire comfortably.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a winner!
I just love this book. Other books on retirement just seem so shallow. This one is truly comprehensive, and it is written in a way that I understand! The part that sold me was in the acknowledgements, when the author jokes that this book is big enough to be a lethal weapon. The Retirement Bible is the perfect resource for anybody who dreams about retiring someday, which should cover just about everybody. And Lynn O'Shaughnessy certainly has a way with words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lives Up to the High Standards of Its Namesake
Introduction. Aiming to be a one-stop source for all things retirement related, the Retirement Bible largely succeeds in accomplishing its goal. Presenting sound and authoritative advice in a well-organized package, the book is appropriate for anyone at any age who is interested in planning for that important yet often neglected milestone in life: retirement.

Traditional retirement plans. The book begins by covering the media-ignored pair consisting of Social Security and pension plans. Despite the chapter title of "Gambling on Social Security," the author takes an overall optimistic perspective on the matter, arguing that the system will still be around a century from now due to political forces. That being said, the recommendation is wisely made that the rising generation's "best strategy is to plan for less." On the subject of pensions, the author chastises the media for rarely mentioning the topic, even though almost half of private-sector workers still have them.

Finding expert advice. The book next presents--in rather excruciating detail--a full three chapters on locating and using financial experts of various kinds. While the information is essentially useful, I felt the subject could have been covered in a single, pithy chapter. However, the author presented a well-formulated case for taking advantage of the experts. For most services, the author's apparent bias is toward the CFP designation, and fee-only planners are recommended.

Common retirement vehicles. With a solid foundation to build upon, the retirement vehicles themselves are introduced, starting with 401(k)s. I particularly enjoyed the section titled "The Six Worst 401(k) Mistakes." It presented in no uncertain terms the landmines that can explode in one's face when dealing with this common retirement plan. Additionally, a great review was provided of the standards that a high quality 401(k) should meet.

When it came to IRAs, I felt the author assumed too much foreknowledge on the part of her readers. She talked a great deal about IRAs but never quite said what they are. Likewise, the explanation of IRA rollovers was given too early and was confusing. I also found the separate chapter solely devoted to inherited IRAs to be unnecessary, overly specialized, and ultimately fruitless.

Stocks and mutual funds. The Retirement Bible beautifully explains stock picking and its related jargon. It is mildly conservative and declares that market timing is a waste of time. In short, the advice is to "Buy and Hold and Hold and Hold." In one of the author's shining moments, she gives the best explanation I have ever read of how economic factors like interest rates and inflation affect the stock market. She further acknowledges that individual stock investing is not for everyone; nevertheless, thoughtful advice is provided on creating a balanced portfolio this way.

As one thus might guess, the author raves about mutual funds. In particular, she expounds upon the virtues of index funds many times throughout the book. Mutual funds and other investments with high expense ratios are her greatest enemy, it seems, and on their heels are unnecessary taxes.

Bonds. This area has always confused me, and the Retirement Bible was perfect on this point. It began at the ground level, stating that "a bond is an IOU." The book pointed out that guessing interest rate movements is essentially pointless and recommended laddering bonds. Rather than being content to leave bonds as the only fixed-income investment to choose from, the author also wisely discussed alternatives.

Withdrawal tactics. In a smart move, the author sets up realistic expectations for her readers in saying that many assumptions must be made in planning for cashing in one's retirement funds. Unfortunately, to mitigate the uncertainty of retirement planning she goes overboard in repeatedly extolling the virtues of Monte Carlo simulations at least three times throughout the book.

General comments. As alluded to above, the author's overall approach to investing is to be risk averse without being overly constrained. "Trying to outsmart the market is futile," she proclaims. While the subject is certainly debatable, I for one concur with her feelings. Likewise, I agree with the constant touting of index funds as the major core of a person's portfolio; I will follow this advice.

Despite the reality that the author does "take sides" in certain instances, one of the Retirement Bible's strongest points is its simple and unbiased approach. In fact, the constant barrage of "Advantages of..." and "Disadvantages of..." sections almost becomes a cliché as one nears the book's end.

As also mentioned earlier, the author sometimes assumes too much foreknowledge of her readers. In the chapter called "A Primer on Trusts," for example, the fundamental definition of the term trust is never provided. Additionally, some terminology is simply used in a confusing manner. The terms bond and fixed-income investment are frequently used as synonyms even after the author has just finished explaining how utilities, convertible securities, preferred stock, and REITs are types of fixed-income investments.

Another interesting quirk I noticed about the book is a slight but noticeable bias toward recommending certain companies over and over. Specifically, these were Vanguard, Fidelity, and T. Rowe Price. While the ostensible reason for this practice is that these institutions are low-cost leaders in their field, I still found myself getting the feeling at times that other companies out there had to be offering some useful services, as well.

Finally, the most major suggestion I would make to the author is to include a chapter that "ties things together," so to speak. At times, one feels as if stocks, funds, bonds, IRAs, 401(k)s, and the like are being discussed within a vacuum. I would have greatly enjoyed a chapter that brought the concepts together in a more meaningful manner than what is already provided.

Conclusion. Though not a perfect book, the Retirement Bible for the most part lives up to its name. It covers a wide range of subjects while presenting simple, easy-to-follow advice that likely fits well with the risk profile of the average investor. It is, therefore, a fitting bible for retirement planning.

    5-0 out of 5 stars O'Shaughnessy Bibles are Must-Haves
Lynn O'Shaughnessy has written two books, 'The Investing Bible' and 'The Retirement Bible,' that complement each other and provide the reader with all of the vital information necessary for making sound financial decisions. The books are written with such clarity and consistency that I have discarded five others on similar subjects because they could not compare with these. I've given copies of both books to my daughter who has joined a surgery practice and needs to become more financially astute. I hope the author will update these two superb texts periodically.

5-0 out of 5 stars Re-Review of my original rating of this book
I may have erred in my previous commentary about exchange traded funds. They may, in fact, be "open-ended" funds, meaning that they trade at the net asset value at any instant in time during a trading day, rather than at at a premium or discount as closed end funds do. If I have erred, MEA CULPA! Since I have no proof that my original comment is valid, I've upped my rating on this "bible" to 5 stars. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new....
First things first: I am happy with my job, and not looking for another... But I read the book thoroughly, and I kind of liked it. But it's not the first book in this field I read, and I hardly did find anything new.
If someone asked for my advice, I'd say: look in your local library, and read it.
But don't spend your precious money on buying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any serious IT pro
Matthew Moran's The IT Career Builder's Toolkit could also have been reviewed in our 'business' section for job-seekers, but is featured here because so many IT employees are seeking work, and so many college students aspire to enter the field. This is career prep with no holds barred: Matthew Moran profiles solid, market-based skills and proven methods to advance an IT career or reach a goal. Newcomers in particular receive explicit advice on how to present technical skills value in a tough job market, how to become an essential commodity in an overwhelmed market, and how to gain meaningful professional contacts. A 'must' for any serious IT pro.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toolkit for Building Many Other Careers as Well
The IT Career Builder's Toolkit by Matthew Moran (Cisco Press, 2005) is actually a useful toolkit for building a career in many other fields as well. The author has taken the trouble to uncover a great many universal truths about the relationship between employee and employer, the bottom-line mentality of human resource management in business, and the effects of the current economy on new entrants to the job market. It was really unusual to see a business book that didn't seem to just echo the platitudes of every other business book on the market, but which instead, by reflecting on the state of affairs in one particular vocation, and focusing on the specific problem of starting out as an entry level candidate, repeatedly illustrated techniques that people can apply in any stage of their career, and in may different professions.

This is because so many of the players in everyone's career are aptly introduced, with numerous tips on how to deal with the ones who may have forgotten to take their medication this morning, or who may have more of an influence on your future than you think. The numerous personas of interviewers, bosses, coworkers, and the people you are ultimately helping-your users-are drawn up so that you can recognize them when you see them, and handle a variety of situations as a professional. For instance, even if a scrap of criticism is too harsh, is there a grain of truth in it? And if you are concerned about a pending performance review or how your supervisor views your progress, you may want to assign a self-evaluation and report the results to your supervisor. The author gives a vivid account of how well that worked for him.

But of course the focus is on helping the young entrant to the IT job market. To this end, he presents the concept of a toolkit, or a complete set of tips and tactics that can be applied at many different stages of a career: the point is to choose the right tool for the situation. The other analogy is that the book is for career building, not just putting together a succession of jobs. The would-be IT professional is encouraged to consider exactly what skills should be honed, what relationships should be developed, what approach should be taken to building a satisfying work life. It is very tempting to plow ahead and get the next hot certification, or to hop to the next job that pays a few bucks more or touches on the trendiest technology. It is useful to be reminded that-even in the post-bubble chill with salaries down from their happy heights and jobs for which you have to compete rather than step into-you can build a more satisfying career by deliberately designing and planning it instead of just adding jobs to the pile.

Still, the author realizes that there are not a lot of choices at first, and so a lot of care is put into describing how to make the most of any job. It compares and contrasts a number of possible situations the new employee might wind up in-enterprise versus SMB, IT department versus a branch of the business-and describes how someone might make themselves invaluable in any of these environments. There is a pragmatic and reassuring sense that by building the foundation of your career, you can then construct the house you want to live in.

There are many other basics covered in the areas of cover letters, resumes, networking, interviewing skills, searching for jobs, seeking promotions-the nuts and bolts of making your way into the market. And among the different options covered are the pursuits of salaried positions as opposed to consulting, and choosing the attributes for which job to take if you get multiple offers (it's not always about the money). The section of negotiating skills, and defining what constitutes an effective negotiation, is an eye opener for anyone who doesn't have those natural poker-playing skills.

The CD has a lot career management tools such as resumes, self-assessment forms, contact tracking forms, and others. There are also sections on consulting tools and financial management tools. There were some broken links but I'm not sure if this had to do with my browser (I was using Mozilla). In any case, you can browse the contents under Windows explorer without needing to use the menus.

For a very carefully written effort to help aspiring applications to the IT market, I'd give this one five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A manutal for your IT Career
Today, I have finished The IT Career Builder's Toolkit, and I an honestly say that I have added it to my recommended reading material.I feel it is a must read for those starting out in life, and to those who have found their lifelong career path. For those starting out, The IT Career Builder's Toolkit serves as a manual for career building.Matt sets expectations for those new to the field, and he helps that on a path to success. For those who are in the field, Matt reminds the seasoned IT Pro to reflect were they current are in their profession, and he urges them to rise to the top of their field.Throughout the book, Matt provides tools, guidance, and experience that can be added to your own career toolkit. I could hear him asking me, "Are you planning on being an average professional?"The IT Career Builder's Toolkit is a must read for anyone in the professional workplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soft Technology
Like a runner benefits from an hour in the weight room after 40 miles on the track,so the IT technician will do well to spend some time reading the IT Career Builder's Toolkit by Matthew Moran. You do not have to be technical at all to read this book.It is full of good common sense advice from an information technology perspective. It is the first Cisco Press book that has caught the eye of my non-technical friends.
Moran emphasizes the development of the soft skills that are so necessary to really succeed in any career. He explains that we must become agnostic about which technology or process we use and more cognizant of the big picture of how technology can accomplish business needs and profitability.Concerning this focus he asks the reader, "Are you a pure technologist or a systems analyst?"
There are 3 helpful sections on the CD.Career Management Tools has examples such as resumes, cover letters, opportunity tracker, self assessment form, and status reports.Consulting Tools has tips on sales presentations, case studies, and solution selling.Financial Tools, includes budget and cash flow planning and sample spreadsheets.
The book is divided into short easy to read chapters.I particularly enjoyed Moran's writing style which consists of well organized paragraphs consisting of tight punchy sentences. The book is the result of the author's years of experience of applying solutions for his employers and customers through managing his own and others IT skills. Before you read one more technical manual, I recommend you read the IT Career Builder's Toolkit!

I found this booklet to be of extreme value compared to similar products. I used to buy a whole text to give to my clients before this came along. It contains some of the best material I have seen on the Myers-Briggs types. The fact that it has so many great contributors is a value-add. I would recommend this booklet to anyone using Myers-Briggs types in a professional setting. The booklet covers multiple topics including leadership, career development, creativity, stress, problem-solving, personal development, and learning. At first I was overwhelmed with the page count for the types, but after reading the content I was pleasantly excited and couldn't wait to show them to my customers. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great career guide
I picked it up and I couldn't put it down. It's got the right tools and advice for a person that career minded. It also made me realize that I can get the brio that I want out of my career, just where I am.This is a great read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Practical
I've read alot of career and self help books about success in organizational settings....they all primarily prescribe a formula for actions and behaviours that if magically applied somehow will lead to a better work life. Although some of these have helped me, non have really focused on the fundamental principle of success which is You.

This book is powerful because it recognizes and starts with the premise that change must happen from within first....it is not about an organizations gifts or limitations but rather yours.

The other powerful thing which I encountered was that it was simple and practical and led me through a few focused exercises that helped me reframe the things I love to do, what an organization is and is not, and then how to apply what I love in an organization successfuly resulting ultimately in a career that will flourish.

This book is refreshing, simple, real, and enduring. It does not rehash all the old business and career advice but rather creates a practical approach to making You and your career work for you.

Finally the evidence is in that career and organization hopping is a fad of the 90's...but not a requisite in the 21st century.

I highly recommend this book...it has helped me deeply and it's effects will be long lasting.

If you are adventurous in your travel or are interested in knowing more than what is found in travel brochures, this book makes for interesting reading. It gives a basic geographic overview of the world and each major geographic region, providing insights about the geographic character of specific regions to show how it establishes a setting for tourism. All regions or countries have a brief overview of the cultural, physical, and tourism characteristics of the region or country. The cultural characteristics are in the form of cultural capsules pertaining to the people and some tips as to personal actions that are acceptable and others to be avoided. Following the analysis of the geographic character the text discusses the tourist attractions in each of the regions, focusing on the geographic features that are important for creating a desire to visit that region. The authors highlight the most significant attractions, which combine with the geographic facts of the region to form the uniqueness of the area for visitors. In some cases there are differences of opinions concerning which are the major attractions, but those presented in the text provide an overview of the character of each specific tourist destination region.Tourists themselves also create geography. An area with few tourists is different in character from an area with large numbers of visitors. The origin of tourists also affects the environment; as for example visitors from Great Britain create a different environment than those from France because of their differing expectations and resultant services. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Bed and Breakfast (with Cat's Hairs in the Fried Egg)
I recently spent New Year's Eve on top of a gale- and rain-swept volcano in the southern Philippines. Compared to that wet, muddy night, this text comes in a distant second. It never ceases to amaze me that almost any truly fascinating subject, when moulded into a textbook, can be made to appear overwhelming tedious. Many geographers (including the present reviewer way back in 1969) have tried to get their heads round what appears to be the obvious relevance of their discipline to the world's biggest industry - tourism; all have failed - at least to make what they have to say about the connection interesting. This, I regret to say, doesn't make a much better job of the task than its predecessors. I suspect that the reason is that geographers, on the whole, have not taken on board the concept of 'relative geography' - a geography in which distance is measured not in kilometres and miles but in dollars. Once that is accepted then it becomes evident that distances vary depending on the disposable income available to one and the map of the world becomes radically transformed generating quite new insights into how humans use space. To be fair to the authors, this book is probably the best available so far - it is far ranging in its coverage; has a good writing style; is well illustrated; and is as up-to-date as any non-electronic publication can be (though that's not saying a great deal). But exactly who will buy it? Tourism students really don't need to - tourism is not at all about geography but marketing and human/personnel skills. And the general reader isn't going to find too much inspiration here - unless they are stuck on top of a galeswept mountain in Mindanao ... Read more

Well the results are in! I far exceeded the needed score. This book was very helpful. It will train you to think along the right pathway. Are the questions exact? No. Remeber this is a study guide, you are not buying test answers. Study nutrition and developmental stages in a health book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I took the Dantes test today.
There were 101 questions and this book came close in about 10.
    What a surprise I experienced.
It would have been nice if most of the book material had been close to what was in the test.
It was if someone put the book together just guessing what the questions might be.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even close
This is the second book I have purchased from the Jack Rudman Dante series and the second time that I have found absolutely none of the questions on the test! This was a total waste of money and time. The test is fairly easy without too much effort but the study guide was useless!

1-0 out of 5 stars The book did not cover anything that was on the actual test.
This was the worst test preparation booklet I ever used. The booklet included extremely technical terminology and questions. The test was straightforward and contained mostly common sense questions. There may have been one question from the booklet on the test. The questions and answers included in this booklet in no way resembled those asked on the test. Luckily, I decided to go to my college and there I studied from a guide that was completely aligned to the actual Dantes Here's To Your Health exam. I do not recommend this book for test preparation. ... Read more

Could you please let me know if they come written in Japanese by any chance. I am looking to find out if the book "Milady's Art & Science of Nail Technology" is printed in other languages. My cousin Bobie is the director of a local Beauty College here in Maryland and they have quite a few Vietnamese, Spanish and French students. Please respond. Thanks so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well written and for only me! (the nail tech)
This book was excellent! It was written as if the author was writing directly to me. There is a lot out there directed to the nails industry. Some, if not most of it, is garbage. Produced by those wanting to cash in on a good thing. However, this book is great. It really covers, without going into volumns, more accurate and useful information than I have seen in one place. I am truly amazed!! ... Read more

This book illustrates how to land a top job with advanced preparation. The authors emphasize the importance of training and
high skill attainment. There are benefits in free agency and entrepreneurship. It is critical to define yourself accurately and to maintain a network grid whether or not you have a job.
