Book Description

The "Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH)" has been compiled every two years by the U.S. Department of Labor since the 1940s. This is a quality reprint with only one difference—it's much less expensive!

One reason for the "OOH's" continued popularity is that there is excellent labor market information throughout the book, plus extensive indexes.

For each job, the "OOH" discusses the nature of the work, working conditions, job outlook, training and education needed, earnings, related occupations, and additional information sources, including Web sites. The book is packed with practical, current information, and it is invaluable for anyone doing career research, writing resumes, preparing for interviews, or writing job descriptions. Additional features:

* Job descriptions are cross-referenced with the more specialized job titles in the O*NET.
* Includes interesting photos of workers on the job, plus charts and tables.
* Brief overview of trends for major industry and occupational groups.
* Organized by clusters of related jobs for easy research.
* Job opportunities forecast is based on Bureau of Labor Statistics projections through 2012. ... Read more

If you are searching for a job or job options you owe it to yourself to invest in this book. In my book, "How to find your dream job and make it a reality: solutions for a rewarding and meaningful career." I reference previous editions of this book.

In addition, most authors on the subject of job hunting and career use this information. The only problem is these references are not very comprehensive. If you want comprehensive information on the job out look this book is for. Book Description

Sure, some people enter preschool knowing what they want to be when they grow up. But most of us aren't so lucky, and we don't get much help. Some parents say things like, "It's your life, you decide." Other parents go to the other extreme, expecting you to follow in their footsteps. In high school, you take a career test, but many high school students laugh at their test results: the utterly useless, "You could pursue a wide range of careers."

This revised edition of Cool Careers For Dummies provides insight into landing a job for anyone who doesn't know where to look, doesn't have time to look, or doesn't want to suffer through a long back-to-school stint. It's designed for people of all walks of life to uncover rewarding, viable careers or get in on the ground floor of the next Big Things. What's more, this guide even offers tips to make even a humdrum job much better.

Clearly organized by specific topic areas, you can easily find the topics that appeal to you. You'll uncover information like

  • Finding the right career for you, whether you've never had a career before or want to dump your old career for a new and improved one
  • Getting smart about choosing, and making the most of, a career
  • Landing the job you want even if the thought of networking gives you the creeps and you don't have a 500-name Rolodex
  • Customizing your career to make any job better by tailoring it to your strengths and using wise approaches to your boss and co-workers

And, you'll find a fast yet substantive introduction to more than 500 good careers, including many unlikely suspects!

Despite taking career tests, plowing through fat career guides, and spending hours of reflecting, many people end up falling into their careers more by chance than by choice. Not a good way to ensure career happiness. There is a better way. Read all about it, in Cool Careers For Dummies. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A treasure chest of great ideas on how to choose a career.
This book gives you inside information on hundreds of careers, presented in an informative yet fun way. It shows you clever ways to learn more about a career. It shows you an easier way to write a great resume. It shows you how to use the Internet to land a job. It even shows you ways to get motivated to do your job search. I've never written a book review before but this book is very, very good!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book did change my life in more ways than one.
I first looked through the books' 404 pages and found many more options than I had thought. Then I answered the "20 most revealing questions" and learned useful information about whom I am. What makes the book really great is that it goes beyond insight - it helped me develop a step-by-step plan towards achieving my dreams. I did end up with a cool career. Who can ask for anything more?

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
Far too many of the suggested careers in this book are long shots, at best. Nemko makes it sound like if you're willing to get the necessary education or put some effort into getting some expreience, you can move into any of the niche areas he recommends in his book. If only that were true. Too many of his recommendations have long ago been discovered, or are simply areas in which your odds of being selected, even if you are a Harvard grad with impeccable credentials, are about the same as winning a state lottery.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad....But Not Great
I was somewhat disappointed with this book. Although it was organized very well, had a nice index, which made it easy to find things, and was written in a simple, right-to-the-point, easy to read way, the book was a little innacurate when it came to some job descriptions. For example there are many jobs which 5 years ago may not have required a college degree but due to the ultra-competitive world we live in now, they may now require a college degree. This was overlooked on a few of the careers listed. Take for instance becoming a foreign language/interpreting. This has become a highly competitive sought after job and the minimum requirement is not only being fluent in another language but to also have at least a Bachelor's Degree. Having lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, I know how cut throat the job market is so I was hoping that the author of this book was more aware of things like that. Even careers like becoming a police officer has changed quite a bit. Now many police departments require police recruits to have a college degrees, which was definitely NOT the case 5 or 10 years ago. But overall this book was fairly good. I recommend it just as long as you are aware that there may be a few flaws. I also think it depends on where you live. If you are from a super competitive urbanized part of the United States, like the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, or New York, remember that the standard for getting a decent jobs is completely different than anywhere else in the country. In fact I'm hoping oneday a book called "Cool Careers for People Living in California" will be published! Lol!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great summaries of various career opportunities!
I have been seriously considering changing my career at times and just happened to stumble upon Marty Nemko's website just the other day. I was impressed with many of the articles I read on his website and was eventually led to this book. The next day, I picked up this book at a local bookstore (I wanted it so bad, I couldn't wait to receive it from an online order!) I glanced through a number of books on interviewing, resume writing, cover letters, and so on, and found many excellent books focused specifically on those topics.

However, what really led me to purchase this book was Chapter 2 - "The Cool Careers Yellow Pages". The pages are yellow and obviously stand out purposely from the rest of the book. I have thoroughly read through these "yellow" pages more than half a dozen times (in one night), comparing different career options. I also read through the sections on cover letters and resumes, but they were a little too superficial. However, that's understandable as this is NOT a book about writing effective cover letters and resumes, and I was fine with that. It's not what I expected.

What I did expect from this book was to garner some important and key information about different career options, and that's exactly what I got. Chapter 2 makes this entire book worthwhile. I personally have never seen another book that categorizes and subcategorizes careers like this one. I found it a little difficult to find certain careers because I wasn't exactly sure how they would be categorized, but nevertheless, the categories are helpful. If you're a people person, this type of categorizing is what you need; if you're a numbers person -- the same. If you like a mix of both, the category is there. After reviewing all of the summary job types listed here, I now have a much better idea of "where I want to go" with my career. Many of the career listings point to very useful and helpful websites as well, which can give you more in-depth information.

If you're looking for a book about writing resumes or cover letters, this is NOT the book; again, it's too superficial for that purpose. If you're looking for a career (e.g., new college grad) or a career change or are looking to re-enter the workforce after being absent for some time, this IS the book you need to get started. Once you've narrowed down some career options, you can explore the Internet for much more detailed information. This book really helps narrow things down quite a bit - at least it did for me. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars was helpfull !!!!!
would recommend this book to everyone.I found it helpful.read this book before you read "case in point" by Marc P.Cosentino.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for non-MBAs
I'm not an MBA and found it confusing and overwhelming. They assume a certain level of knowledge and only offer cookie-cutter frameworks. I found the book Case in Point to be much clearer and more informative. It's Ivy Case Method makes thinking and structuring the cases much easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't do without it
I had a series with slightly less-than brilliant interviews with a couple of US consulting firms after completing my (part-time) MBA last year here (I am a liberal arts undergrad major form an European school). One of the intervievers referred me to the Vault site and this book particularly to help me correct my alleged "firehose" approach to business cases for... my next interviews. To my amazement, it worked. I gladly recommend it to anyone interested in getting into consulting.

5-0 out of 5 stars best case interview preparation in print
In my opinion, this Vault guide is the best guide available which prepares the reader to excel in a case interview. I suggest you at least flip throug it if you are serious about doing well during consulting firm interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent and essential guide
This guide contains numerous essential frameworks, case strategies, and actual case questions with model answers. There must have been more than 100 cases of various types in the guide. I highly recommend to anyone pursuing a consulting position, particularly with strategy consulting practice areas. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Text Book to Keep
I have taught from this book for almost five years now; it is in its seventh edition, has a CD Rom now that includes video clips. The book is comprehensive, and no single semester course can cover everything in it; but I think it is a great book to teach from. First, it is WELL WRITTEN. Next, it is organized well. Finally, the speeches it contains are great examples---both student speeches, and those from the public sector. I recommend to all my students NOT to sell it, but to keep it for reference later.

3-0 out of 5 stars Remind me to sell this one back
From the inauspiciously multicultural front cover to the very last page, this book definitely has not-so-subtle politically correct overtones; most notable is the section on avoiding overtly masculine language. Its political bent is unabashedly left-wing. As a speech book, however, there are actually some very helpful tips; I found the section on overcoming nervousness well-designed and thought out. The CD is little more than meretricious fluff. Overall, there is really little more than you could find in any serious speech book or even website; it is simply dumbed down for modern college students.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total garbage
I cannot stress the point that if this were not required for many college public speaking courses, Stephen E. Lucas would probably be writing greeting cards at best and at worst, the ingredient label on a tube of toothpaste!
The author uses examples of persuasive speeches (with a liberal agenda) to a receptive (liberal) audience as his evidence that a well written, well delivered speech will influence the audience to the speakers view. Total cr^p!

I wouldnt have bought this if it wasnt a required text and I am happy to be selling this liberal trash to some other poor unsuspecting student. I wonder if the college gets kickbacks from the publishing houses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Reference and Well Constructed
For both beginning and advanced speakers -- really, anyone seeking to persuade others -- this is a FINE reference. The work is loaded with URLs and reference sources for research purposes. You'll definitely want to keep this book on the shelf within handy reach. The chapter on "Speaking to Persuade" is especially useful for getting commitment from others. I recommend the work particularly to business professionals who want good, solid advice on how to construct and deliver effective communications. In addition, the author has provided exceptionally well-integrated support materials to ensure proper understanding of the concepts. Teachers and trainers will find the bank of test materials and workshop exercises extremely helpful. Also, the CD presents highlights from such outstanding speakers as Barbara Bush, John F. Kennedy, Elizabeth Dole and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Great information inside. I learned alot about writting as well as speaking! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important how-to book a coach can read.
Coaching is a peculiarly difficult service to market! You're marketing yourself, and all sorts of emotions get in the way of direct action -"I musn't boast", "I can't promote myself","Am I good enough", "I don't want to be seen as pushy" are examples I've heard. Questions of self-worth abound. Many coaches need major coaching in this area! In fact, if you don't market your coaching services regularly and aggressively, you'll sooner or later stop coaching! This book meets that need head-on, with sections on Deciding Who You Want To Coach, Creating a Program Your Target Audience Will Pay For, Creating a Marketing Strategy, and Learning How To Sell. In addition, the largest chapter, Creating a Marketing Strategy, lays out all the marketing options, and, coachlike, offers assignments to the reader to get him/her moving. I found the section on Working With The Press particularly interesting, and challenging. That alone is worth the price of the book. I run a coaching chapter in New York City, and I've invited the author to come and present her book to our membership. If you're a coach, or planning to be one, I highly recommend this book. It is a marketing seminar all by itself. It gives a very clear, well-organized and concise outline of the steps you can take to make coaching a delight - not only because of what you can contribute to others, but also because you can make a very nice living doing so!

5-0 out of 5 stars Four Steps To Building A Profitable Coaching Practice
I found Deborah's book to be straightforward, precise and probably the most useful of anything I have read for creating and marketing my coaching practice... and all in one resource! She breaks down each of four steps clearly and concisely for even the most beginner coach. An excellent and exciting resource for any coach at most any level.

4-0 out of 5 stars One Doable Step at a Time
This book has accomplished the twin goals of "taking action": It's comprehensive in the variety of ways a coach can advance their practice. And yet, it breaks down each choice in easily doable steps; taking away the mystique or intimidating notions a new coach may have about what they must do to build their business.

Additionally, it's packed from top to bottom with terrific resources for writing, web development, program/seminar development, and much more!

It's one terrific resource for the back pocket of any ambitious coach!

5-0 out of 5 stars Advice That Is To The Point
If you like to get information that is concise and to the point, you have found.

5-0 out of 5 stars 101 Best... has great tips in the back!
I bought this book based on the reivews in this site, and it is a really good one. The resumes have a wide variety of examples and are very high-powered/professional. But to my surpirse, there are 200 quick and lean job search tips in the back, and they're great. They helped out on interviewing, writing resumes and letters, working with headhunters and interviewing. This is a great value if you need a job search book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Resumes that match candidate skills with employer's needs
This book is very good for several reasons: It gives the best variety of resumes (the best from the Professional Association of Resume Writers, over 1000 members), just enough how-to without overkill and 200 tips bulleted off in the back that are very information rich (see back cover copy). The resumes focus on positioning the candidate's skills and matching them to the employer needs. The book also includes sample cover letters that are more action-oriented than the typical ones I saw in other books. I found several resumes that I could emulate and use, particularly those on pages 56 and 118.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Value
I found the book to be very helpful. It had some useful tips and sample resumes and cover letters. One of the best books of its type I've ever seen

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring and a waste of time!
I bought this book based on all of the favorable review's and was greatly disappointed. As a recent college graduate in the humanities, I found it to be a big waste of time and money! If you are not interested in finding a job, buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Pick
My wife got me this book for Christmas through Amazon.com to follow up with my New Year's resolution to look for new opportunities in healthcare. This book is pretty good - it has a lot of varying kinds of resumes and good tips for overall job search, interviewing, and networking. ... Read more

Book Description

A few years ago, buddies Mike, Brian, and nathan faced the end of college with the realization that, like many a college student, they had absolutely no idea what to do with their lives.Their solution: take a roadtrip and interview people from all walks of life to learn how they got where they are. Their mode of transporation: a clunky, 31-foot green motor home. Three months and 17,000 miles later, they'd met the CEO of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, the scientist who decoded the human genome, and the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic. They'd talked to bookstore owners, filmmakers, artists, and more than 70 others who had found their callings-their "open roads."

Mike, Brian, and Nathan had found their mission: to help others define their own paths based on passion, individuality, and nonconformity. They titled the project Roadtrip Nation, made a documentary, created a TV show, wrote a book, and now send teams of students on roadtrips each summer. FINDING THE OPEN ROAD shows how you too can create a roadtrip experience to discover whether you're traveling down the right course in life. Through a step-by-step guide to planning your trip, a roadtrip journal that offers the personal perspective, and more than 50 interviews that describe how others found their true roads, this inspirational handbook offers a nation's worth of wisdom for anyone trying to find their own authentic path. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Textbook for Pharmacy Technician Program
If you have never worked in a pharmacy before and want to pass the pharmacy technnician certification exam, then you need more than just a certification review book. You will also need a textbook that explains comprehensively pharmacy laws and the operating procedures of a typical pharmacy. Because it isn't a certification review, be aware that it doesn't have enough practice problems. Overall, it is an excellent textbook to use with a workbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars WOULDN'T BE BAD IF THEY COULD GET IT RIGHT
The information presented is fairly easy to understand, interesting, and seems to be thorough. So what's the problem? I have to say, I would absolutely love the textbook and its corresponding workbook if it wasn't for one truely frustrating aspect - there are way too many errors. It's incredible! Here's an example - a question regarding roman numeral conversions (pg 38 wkbk)- what is 14 in roman numerals? well, anybody who's gone through grade school could tell you it's XIV - the answer key tells you it's CIV (104!!). How about this one (pg 85 txt) - convert 1mg to g: ok, i'm thinking - DUH - .001g - correct answer, according to the answer key is .011g -- Now, this is not quite a big deal when it's very easy to tell the book is wrong (yet, again) - but then, when you get into more difficult calculations and you can't trust the answer key, it becomes very frustrating. When you take into account the fact that you've spent over $60 for the text and workbook and you can't count on the information to be correct it becomes enraging. There are also a plethora of idiotic typos to furthur insult you for sending these people your money. Example (pg 108 txt) convert 120 mcg to mg - answer according to the key: 120 mcg = 0.12 mcg - that's 0.12 MCG not MG. Or, how about his - convert 50% to a decimal. Answer according to the key: 50/100. Now, the last time I checked that was something called a fraction - a decimal looked more like this: .50 - This isn't even the tip of the iceberg. I just have one question for Morton Publishing Co...Do you guys happen to employ anyone there called an EDITOR? I just hope to God you all don't have anything to do with the answer keys the PTCB is holding in their possession. If you do, I quit now.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific resource!
OK. Where was this book when I was looking for my first job? It's practical, lively, and filled with helpful advice. I'd recommend it to any job-seeker!

5-0 out of 5 stars A well written textbook, resource and educational tool.
This book is a tool for job and career success. It is a classroom textbook or can be used alone as other books published in a self-help format. For the person that is willing to put the time into doing the exercises the rewards are great. This is especially true for those still in school/college without a lot of work experience.

The review that was placed with this book title is judging the book not as a text book that is part of a classroom setting. I am sure that any text book would get a poor review when quick/easy answers are wanted. But when true knowledge and a sure path is wanted, this textbook has more depth than a 50 page quick fix. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Combination of Information and How To
As interested in diversity management as I am, I find much of the written material a bit dry and academic. Perhaps writers compensate for the strong feelings that this work brings up by trying to create some sense of distance. In any case, there is a real lack of simple, down to earth texts that are both effective and easy to assimilate. "Voices of Diversity" is the exception to all of this. As the subtitle indicates, the material in the book is based on the content of interviews and discussions with many individuals, and the vitality of their expression permeates the entire work.

The book starts out with some generic introductory material and then starts to go through the interview findings in a straightforward, group by group fashion. There are seperate chapters on African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latinos, recent immigrants, workers with disabilities, younger and older workers, gays and lesbians, women, and white men. Two groups that were left out, which I feel should have been included are Jewish and Arab-American which are often, mistakenly lumped together with white male. Nor is much attention paid to religious or socio-economic diversity.

The chapters themselves start out with general discussion. They then go on to introduce the statements made by interviewees and discuss the stories behind them. Then several scenarios of workplace situations are introduced. After each scenario sections discuss what went wrong and what might have been done differently. I found this material very useful. Getting some insight into how the affected people felt and what they thought is tremendously useful in getting to the source of the real problem. The material on what should have been done provides good examples of simple, considerate and respectful behavior which could be the basis for finding common ground and resolving issues.

The book dates from 1994, but is still quite timely in 2001. Renee Blank and Sandra Slipp have a crisp, clear writing style that makes for easy reading. Not only is the book good reference material, but it would be a fine teaching tool for a discussion group. I would recommend "Voices of Diversity" for everyone's diversity reading list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Down-to-earth Manual.. Extremely well written
I am reading this book for a leadership program and have found a jewel. I am thoroughly enjoying the real-life examples of discrimination experienced by the various demographic groups. The book is written in layman's language, and without being blunt, its examples and how-to instructions are clear to the reader. I strongly suggest this to managers or staff members willing to learn more about diversity and how it fits into the workplace. ... Read more
