5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding insights from a former top assistant!
This book has helped so many people! It's perfectly brilliant.

I think it's insane that reviewers are commenting on publisher's type-o's instead of commenting on how significant this book really is. Obviously, Ms. Duncan proofed her own book and after meeting Ms. Duncan at an event, I mentioned the reviews about the errors in the book. Ms. Duncan and her staff has tried desperately for years to demand that the book be reprinted. Some things unfortunately are out of one's hands, and I recognize this after years of being a journalist. Look at the NY Times! And every other book on your shelf! They all have errors!

Ms. Duncan has been instrumental in the salary increases, and gaining recognition for this truly unique role! I recommend this book to anyone in the role or considering it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read
I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Duncan's book. I found it an easy read, packed with lots of excellent information.

As with the other reviewer I was extremely disappointed in the skills test in the back of the book. Missing questions, answers to questions that weren't printed.

I wonder if Ms. Duncan has read her own book? Did she review the skills test information in the back before it was published? If the fault lies with the publisher, I hope she got her money back. I also hope she'll do a re-print with the skill test corrected because I found it very helpful in identifying weak areas in my own skill set.

I've been an Executive Secretary/Assistant for the past ten years. Often a good assistant is taken for granted. I appreciated Ms. Duncan's affirmation that my job is more than a job, it's a career and that not just anyone can be a good assistant.

If you can get past all the problems with the skill test in the back of the book, I think you'll find the content extremely interesting, insightful, and motivating.

2-0 out of 5 stars Talk About Ironic!
I just finished reading this book about the "new executive assistant". Of course it emphasizes attention to detail, checking your work, accuracy, etc. Upon completing the extensive skills test in the back of book, I was horrified to find the following blatant errors: 1. In the vocabulary section, the questions skip from #56 to #61, yet in the answer section, these questions do appear. 2. The proofreading section fails to point out periods that are missing at the end of two sentences. Here's the kicker: 3. When I went to check my answers for the spelling section, I discovered that there were only two answers out of 110 questions. To top, there were answers for #110 - 122, which didn't exist in the first place.

OK, can anyone find a proofreader at McGraw Hill to catch these types of errors? How can anyone take this book seriously? The other person who reviewed this book obviously did not read the whole thing. What a disappointment! I do recommend another book that I read. It's called The Valuable Office Professional by Michelle Burke. She is right on the money. There are some more in-depth self-evaluation tests, which go much further than vocabulary and grammar skills. I also got some information about her consulting service, which I am trying to convince management our company needs. That's my summary of this book. Good luck with your administrative careers no matter who you are or where you live!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ms. Duncan has written a mentoring masterpiece!
"The New Executive Assistant" is a must-read for aspiring or seasoned executive assistants, their bosses, and everyone in between.

Ms. Duncan doesn't just advise you to develop a proactive rather than a reactive approach to your administrative career, she guides you to discovering both what you want out of life and what your career can provide. She covers all the important bases for surviving in today's fast-paced world: learning to adapt to change (technical and cultural); mastering the fundamentals of communicating what you really mean; tapping into your management and leadership potential; handling both yourself and others in conflict situations; promoting yourself, your boss, and your company; and regaining your spiritual "center". Most importantly, however, Ms. Duncan asks wether or not you are cut out to be an executive assistant. Life is too short to just have a job; whatever it may be, find a career that works for you, challenges you, and fits your personality.

Packed with objective insights, advice, and enjoyable witticisms, "The New Executive Assistant" delivers. I found in this one book what countless seminars and 50-minute training series have not been able to provide; I found truely usable, relevant insights and information. Ms. Duncan has created a mentoring master piece for executive assistants (and anyone who wants to understand them)! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars everything you ever wanted to know about being a tour guide
I recently took a college level course in a hospitality and tourism curriculum and this was the text used for the class. I was skeptical as to what a book could teach you about being an effective tour guide. During the class I had the opportunity to lead a group to London for a 9 day tour. I was amazed at the many tips the book gave that were helpful. He discusses the psychological aspects of "herding instincts" and how people can revert to childish behavior when they submit all decision making for a week or two to a tour guide. It includes tips on how to set up a tour package and how to get the best deals from hotels and airlines. He also discusses the different types of guide jobs including positive and negatives aspects of each. Very Helpful book! ... Read more

Great book gives you all the insider information that you need to get the job of your dreams. I am in the final interview process with the regional manager and couldn't be happier. I loved the book and used all of the knowledge from it to get by my first 5 interviews with a breeze. Great book, low price, can't beat it. Thanks Lisa for all the help!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book & Even Greater Service
Prior to reading this book I felt I had a very good idea of what landing a pharmaceutical job would take. After reading the book I quickly realized that I may have been giving myself a bit too much credit. The Manger Surveys, sample interview questions, brag book suggestions, and follow-up chapters are the one's I found most informative. This book definitely taught me techniques that will help me stand out from the crowd both before and after securing an interview.

The service provided by Lisa Alexander and her staff have also been excellent. I have e-mailed Lisa and her staff approximately four times since completing the book and have received a reply within 24 hours every time. The questions she has answered and tips she has offered me via e-mail alone are worth the $29.95 I paid for the book.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone that is serious about entering the Pharmaceutical Sales Industry.

After too many job rejections, I was about to give up- PharmRepSelect was recommended to me by the Manager that interviewed me but did not offer me the job- He knew it would help my interview performance. It did , every page is filled with practical, sound usable advice. The examples and stories are so clear that I was able to immediately see what I could do better on my next interview. I am now in the industry and recommend this book to anyone that is discouraged. PharmRepSelect will keep you from giving up and increase your chances tenfold of getting the job offer.

1-0 out of 5 stars no help at all
This book won't help you much at all. There's nothing in here you won't find in some of the other books that have much more to offer. I also bought the cd, it sounds like something a high school speech class put together.
When you buy the book and cd together, you're supposed to be able to e-mail questions to the author directly. I tried that and never heard back from her even once. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The FBI website doesn't even come close!
If you visit the FBI website you'll find only basic and carefully screened information. No surprise there. Although the internet and Ackerman's book both list requirements for the special agent position and other jobs (even though Ackerman's book has more), this is where the similarities end. For example, the FBI will never suggest ways to best describe your educational achievements, employment history, volunteer work, accomplishments, or other aspects of your background on the FD-140 application form or in KSA statements. Ackerman does, and if you've applied for an FBI job you know this can make or break your application because it's the first step in the screening process. The FBI also doesn't tell you how to prepare for and respond to specific types of questions you'll be asked during the structured interview. No surprise there, either. I can tell you from firsthand experience that Ackerman's characterization of the interviewing process is right on the money, and the same can be said for his guidance on the written exams. His description of the background investigation process, including the areas of emphasis that detrmine whether a security clearance is granted, is another example (of many) that you will not find on the FBI website. If basic and carefully screened information is all you need, stick with the internet and you'll be fine. If you want more than public relations material, this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for anyone considering a career with the FBI
This book has been an EXCELLENT resource as I progress through the FBI hiring process. Having read the book beforehand, I knew the answers to 90% of the questions that candidates asked while attending Phase I testing at the local field office.

Here's what I like about this book:

-It provides details for both special agent and professional support positions. It covers the hiring process in detail, tips and strategies to maximize your chances, 10 pages of salary and benefits information, an overview of the training process, and information on sub-specialties in each area.

-The book is well-organized, so I can use it as a handy reference to get answers to my questions quickly and easily as they arise, because you will never remember it all on the first read.

-The Special Agent Application and Selection Process flowchart demystifies this confusing and complicated process.

-In contrast to earlier reviews, I think the copies of the application forms in the appendices do serve a purpose in that they give potential applicants a sense of the time and effort that is required to complete the application process. You will need commitment!!

What I hope to see in the next edition:

-More information about testing that occurs between Phase I and Phase II for some candidates who possess "critical skills," such as foreign language skills.

-A list of places to look, both online and offline, for more information.

In short, I enthusiastically recommend Special Agent Ackerman's book. It is a rich source of data for people who are simply curious about whether or not the FBI is right for them, as well as for those who are actively passing through the hiring process.

-Justin L., Phoenix, AZ

5-0 out of 5 stars FBI application should question: Have you read this book?
Definitely more than what can be found on the net. Great way to prepare for FBI careers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book
I cannot imagine attempting to land a job with the FBI without reading Ackerman's phenomenal book first. Even though I thought I knew what to expect and how things worked, it turns out I was completely in the dark. Not any more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best out there, bar none.
The material in this book is highly informative, right to the point, and the advice is very helpful. It provides comprehensive all-encompassing coverage of the application phases from the initial application up to and including the background investigation and security clearance interview. Careers with the FBI also are covered extensively, including the qualifications, training, and assignments. Bottom line, if you are truly committed to a career with the FBI, this is the book that will get you there. It is absolutely the best book on the subject. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars maybe good for MBA
The book might be good for someone with MBA as a general review but definitelly not for someone preparing for quant job/interview.

For that purpose "Heard on the Street: Quantitative Questions from Wall Street Job Interviews" is at least 100 times better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you learned in your MBA but forgot!
This book is a great review for anyone who has taken finance courses yet may not have retained as much as they would like. I picked up this book after graduating from an MBA program, and found myself saying, "oh yeah, I forgot about that" on many occasions. Overall, it's a keeper that has earned a spot on my professional bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Broad review for Quant Interviews
If you're preparing for an interview for a job as a "quant," FI/MBS/options trader, or risk manager, then this book is a great review of the subject matter. The chapters review bond math, statistics, derivatives, fixed income, equities, currencies, and risk management. The book focuses exclusively on finance, and not on the structure of the financial industry, typical jobs, or interview skills. However, this isn't a drawback -- there are other Vault guides that cover these areas.

Overall, the book is certainly more technical & mathematical than most interview guides (except perhaps for "Heard on the Street" by Tim Crack at MIT), so be prepared to review the Black-Scholes partial differential equation. Despite the complexity of the subject matter, the author's explanations make the material accessible, and her explanations were pithy, clear, and often accompanied by helpful diagrams. My only complaints are that (1) the book doesn't include any review of accounting, which does come up in finance occasionally, and (2) there are just a few mistakes (but not too many). Overall, I found this book to be well worth the time & money I invested in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent preparation
an excellent preparation for advanced finance and quantitative interviews. covers a wide range of topics incl. fixed income, equities, statistics and risk management. starting with the very basics until pretty advanced (esp. in derivatives). a good prior knowledge of many subjects is needed, however, since many topcis are with no/little explanation. very readable with good questions (incl. answers). one might have added some quantitative and non-quantitative questions asked in investment banking interviews, but that's just a detail. Excellent book!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for any supervisor or mid level manager
This is by far and away the best book on supervision that I have ever read.I have used this book extensively to train first line supervisors and mid level managers in Eastern Europe to develop their management skills. The book effectively condenses the management courses I took during a 2 year MBA program into a well-organized manual. The book is easy to read, to the point, and replete with examples. It captures the essential concepts on the margins of each page and provides a review at the end of the chapter. Moreover, it offers case studies and self-assessment tests to reinforce concepts.

2-0 out of 5 stars Figure Templates for Fashion Illustration
This book promises more than it delivers. The basic templates are useful, but in all other aspects this book is lacking.
The written information is scant and repeated - very superfluous. Mr Ireland's style is very outdated and uninspiring for those hoping to make a career out of fashion - in any form. I would recommend this book only as a basic early tool for novices hoping to improve their figure construction.
For inspiration I recommend Laird Borelli's FASHION ILLUSTRATION NOW.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for copying
this isn't the 'how to draw the fashion model' book you wish taught you everything you ever needed to know. However, its good to have around when you just need to pump an idea out. It has women, men, and children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Figure Templates For Fashion Illustration
This book is an excellent resource at a resonable price. It is more than a primer. I'd recommend it to anyone, experienced or novice, who designs/illustrates fashion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Figure Templates for Fashion Illustration
Mr. Ireland has produced a helpful tool. I am a fashion designer and find the templates helpful when I need to do quick working sketches. I also teach Fashion Merchandising students, the templates are wonderful for the students with limited artistic abilities. It helps them in their presentation of professional storyboards. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginners, but watch out for the addl. info
It has excellent sentences and doesn't use a lot of big words to define other words, nor does it give circular definitions (defining cat as an animal and an animal as a cat) but it does go into grammatical terms and usage notes that might be confusing if not properly learned. It's the first dictionary (besides the Webster's New World Dictionary of Basic American English, which is absolutely invaluable) that allows me to get a full understanding of a word without making me chase through twenty other words. It'd be 5 stars if it just didn't go into grammatical terms, but even those have to be understood to know how to use the word. I highly highly recommend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I got a job thanks to this book!
I was always nervous during my interviews, I did not know what to expect on an interview. After reading this book I feel more confident; it gives you model answers to the questions, professional appearance tips, how to deal with different kind of interviewers, and many more.... I GOT A JOB!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I have always been terrified of interviews and found this book to be of GREAT help. Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining!
Just as entertaining as the other Dummies books I've read.
Substancial, informative, a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price of admission
This book's theme is that job interviewing is really performance art and how you can use it to get job offers. Throughout the book the case is made that the job interview should be approached much like an audition for a part in a play. Some of the most important traits needed to win the part are appearance, performance skills and confidence, and this book goes over them in an entertaining and easily readable fashion.

One thing I liked is the way each topic is covered and then tips are given to illustrate the ShowStopper way as well as the Show Flopper way, with breakout boxes discussing areas that are judgment calls in which the experts are divided and it's up to you to decide how one approach or another best fits your situation.

Doing your homework prior to the interview is stressed heavily, as is the obvious value of correcting any deficiencies you may have in your skill set or educational background. The ultimate answer to difficult questions about your qualifications or lack thereof is to either have those skills now or be working on getting them, so you can walk onstage with the confidence needed to land the part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope other applicants don't read this book!
Job Interviews for Dummies is loaded with all the inside scoop information you need to successfully land that dream job! (Provided you're qualified for it). In fact, about the only thing Job Interviews for Dummies cannot tell you, are those rapport building, ice breaking conversation topics for your particular interviewee...does he/she like golf, dogs, etc. You'll have to figure those out on your own!

Job Interviews for Dummies clearly spells out what you should expect, and how you should prepare in order to have a successful job interview.

I highly recommend it! ... Read more

Book Description

Human resources professionals are entrusted, perhaps more than any other corporate designates, with the well-being of their organization's population. They bridge the gaps between the individual and the collective, the person and the purpose. The most successful and effective HR professionals see their careers as a calling, and their work, though driven by corporate goals, is graced by a sense of purpose, a profound generosity, and a love for what they do and the constituencies they serve.

HR from the Heart is a book for HR practitioners who love their jobs -- or want to. Libby Sartain, one of the country's top human resources executives, reveals how HR professionals create a synergy between business objectives and the needs and wants of employees. This inspiring book is equal parts motivational message and how-to, confessional and career guide. Filled with stories from Sartain's considerable experience, HR from the Heart offers a first-hand perspective on forging relationships, selling HR to the company, taking diversity beyond "by the book," keeping policy in perspective, and more -- all while making the right career moves, staying engaged, and forwarding the strategic goals of the company. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and inspiring
Libby and Martha have written an excellent book reflecting the learnings of many years of HR Experience. For those with lots of experience and a caring heart, you will reflect on your HR career and say "hey, that's what I've learned in 20 years." There are good ideas on how to be a strategic and caring leader that will help you be more successful.

For those newer to HR, the book will provide insights that may prevent you from making the same mistakes that us older folks have made. There are also insights on managing your HR career.

I would also recommend the book to CEO and other high-level Execs that 1) want more from their HR department or 2) don't know what they want or what HR can be.

The book is well written and inspirational. Thanks to the authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational, Inspiring, Reinforcing
If you're employed in the human resources field, you'll get a lot out of this book. You'll enjoy a conversation about a wide range of relevant topics with someone who's become a sort of legend in the human resources (HR) field. If you're not in HR, thinking about going into HR, or related to someone in HR, this book will have less value for you.

That said, we must appreciate that a book written in one specialty field may also have value for professionals in another field. While many of the stories and perspectives won't be germane for marketing people, financial folks, or sales professionals, there are some cross-functional lessons to be learned. Although the book is obviously intended for an HR audience, it will have value for people in other professions in the corporate world.

Over the course of 44 chapters, Sartain, who gained fame as Vice President of People for Southwest Airlines, shares her experiences-and some advice-with readers. She shows how valuable HR can be to an organization and how meaningful a career HR can be. This volume will be powerfully reinforcing for people in the field, describing some of the ups and downs and lessons of the author's experience. Anyone contemplating entering the field-or debating about staying in HR-should read these pages.

Readers will gain a better understanding of what Sartain did to build her career, as well as where things didn't go so well. This is not a touchy-feely gushy book as the title might imply, but a realistic report that confronts a wide range of issues in the profession head-on. The chapters are full of advice, some presented directly and some inferred by the lessons learned by the author.

HR from the Heart is the kind of book that will be read thoughtfully by a senior or mid-level professional in the HR field, then passed around to colleagues. Thought-provoking, its reading will stimulate conversations that will raise sensitivities, intensify reality, offer balance, and probably hold some people in the profession that have given some thought to leaving. HR is a field in transition, in search of its rightful place in the corporate design. The contents of Sartain's book, assembled with the able assistance of the insightful professional writer, Martha Finney, comfortably address issues in a way that will aid in the growth of respect for HR and its influence on the corporate world.

2-0 out of 5 stars Chicken soup for the soul for people working in HRM
Touchy, feely, sentimental, nausia-inducing krud - If this is where HRM is going, its as good as dead. Any organisation that has the time and money to heed this stuff needs to critically re-think why the hell its in business. As an operational management analyst, I always had doubts about HRM, believing it to be a BY-product of organisational success NOT a driver. This book confirms this belief.

5-0 out of 5 stars An HR companion
Whether you starting out your HR career, transitioning to a new HR role or looking for an new HR twist, HR from the Heart will be a trusted companion. It's real, honest, informative and fun. I recommend it to all my collegues!

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book for those in the HR field
What an inspiring book. I couldn't put it down. Libby has had an amazing career and she is very forthright about it in her book. There is a lot to be learned from her. Thank you for making me see that I really can make a difference in HR. I think it is easy to become somewhat cynical in HR and you brought out the passion for me. THANKS, Libby! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A boring read...
These "tips" seem outdated and unrealistic. I would have loved to have seem some examples of what to do and what NOT to do, as far as posing, make-up, and meeting agents. It seems like it was written very fast, and sloppy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book!!
I beleive this book was the best book I have ever read on modeling. It was detailed, honest, and it gives you a step by step guide to starting your modeling career. If your interested in modeling and dont know where to start, get this book. I took Roshumba's advice and I am now with Ford modeling agency!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book and the Model are Fabulous!
I have over twenty years experience in the modeling business and worked with many models in my career. Roshumba Williams is not only one of the sweetest people you will ever meet she is also a wonderful role model for young women. She has always gone out of her way to help young people and give great advice to those interested in modeling. I think her book is articulate and insightful. I would definitely recommend "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Being a Model" to anyone thinking about a career in modeling. It's a great investment and could save thousands of dollars that most schools and agents might charge to those that have no knowledge of how to get started.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Beginners Guide
This book is excellent if you want to know more about the modeling industry, but I have probably learnt more from experience and from other models, than the book. If you don't have any connections, this book would be a very nice resource to have. It does give good advice. I like how everything is explained pretty well, but I do not think it takes a book for you to realize whether someone is trying to take your money. I think it is pretty simple to just go to a legitimate agency for their open calls, and if it leads somewhere, they should teach you everything you should know about the modeling industry anyway. This publication is a better modeling book than the other ones I have read before. I would suggest this book over other modeling books because the information is worth the price of the book, and it is told by a real sucessful model.

5-0 out of 5 stars This model wannabe is an idiot no more thanks to Roshumba!
My review of the Complete Idiot's Guide to Being a Model has to be prefaced. I, like everyone else, have always been fascinated with the world of modeling. When I was a kid, I told my mom that I wanted to take modeling lessons so that I could "stop slouching" and carry myslf better (things that she usually admonished me about). In reality, I just wanted to learn how to strut down the catwalk like Christie Brinkly and Nikki Taylor. As I started to learn more about the moves, I got curious about what it would really be like to be a model. Unfortunately, I never found out, but I always wondered. Then, I saw Roshumba's book at Barnes and Nobles. My childhood curiousity overcame me and I purchased the book on the spur of the moment. It was one of the smartest impulses I've given into in a long time. Rosumba wrote the book in such a way that I truly understand what I would have been in for if I'd pursued modeling. It's a straightforward book interlaced with lots of humor and some great illustrations! I now know what to do and what not to do; who to be wary of and who to trust; how to find the creme de la creme of support and how to avoid the scum, and more! I will probably never become a model (unless, of course, a 5'3" model becomes the in look), but Roshumba's book makes me feel that if the opportunity ever arises, I'll be ready. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing resource for anyone volunteering abroad
I just returned from a volunteering project to rural Kenya and I would not have been as prepared as I was without this book. This book is invaluable, it not only prepares you before you leave, it also helps you while you are abroad. The descriptions of the different organizations were very accurate. I defenitely recommend this book to anyone going abroad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
I am preparing to volunteer in Costa Rica and this book has been an amazing resource for me. It has encouraged me to write out my motivations and expectations for this trip. It has helped me think through how I can be an effective volunteer. Thanks to this book I feel more prepared mentally and emotionally and I feel more aware of what I am getting into.

Thanks for this excellent resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Treasure
This book is a treasure. It is a good book for anyone in the age group of about 18-75 of any ethnicity, religion and socio-economic background. It addresses safety, among other issues, for women travelers. This book includes more than information one could find on the Internet about particular opportunities and organizations in any region of the world. It includes in depth studies as well as information for the person considering volunteering overseas to examine his/her motivations and come up with criteria to apply to choosing an organization as well as a location. In addition, this book discusses issues surrounding language barriers and how to overcome the obstacles as well as use the volunteer opportunity to become fluent in another language. This book makes a wonderful gift.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really useful material for serving internationally
I take teams of people on international work projects every year. Presently I have a team going to Bosnia. The material presented in this book is insightful, accurate, practical and worth absorbing before working cross culturally. It is well written, very personal and engaging. Hats off to the contributors, authors, editors and publisher. It will get a lot of use. ... Read more

Job Hunting For Dummies is a remarkably versatile book. It holds your hand through the arduous and terrifying process of job-seeking, and offers valuable insights relating to résumés, interviews, and networking, effectively playing the roles of mother, pal, spouse, and guidance counselor, without ever losing its temper or asking when you're finally going to land a job.

Max Messmer is eminently qualified to instruct on all things job-related. He's chairman and CEO of Robert Half International Inc., the world's largest specialized staffing firm, and he's penned numerous articles, columns, and books (such asThe Fast Forward MBA in Hiring and Staffing Europe), so Messmer knows a thing or two about how to apply for a job effectively, and he has a few words to say on how not to blow it, too.

He knows, for instance, how overwhelming and intimidating the job hunt can be, and how useful it is to break the monster down into prioritized, bite-sized tasks. There are detailed chapters on organizing, setting targets, and scoping out the field, plus essential chapters on writing a résumé and cover letter that present you in the best light, pursuing job leads, and performing well in the interview spotlight.

Messmer's experience in the field makes his advice reliable. You know that when he suggests how to research a company before the interview so you are somewhat knowledgeable about what they do, and when he warns against pink résumés and sarcastic cover letters, he's offering the collective opinion of hundreds of staffing professionals. It's advice worth reading, no matter how qualified you already are to do the job once you get it. The only misleading aspect of Job Hunting for Dummies is the title, because no dummy would do something so smart as to increase his or her application advantage by reading Max Messmer's book. --Stephanie Gold ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, worth every penny
After several years of complete dedication to my career and to the company I was employed by, I experienced a layoff a few months back. Thus, I suddenly find myself back in the job market and felt ill-prepared to deal with it until I got this book.

I went on a few interviews but had been nervous about certain questions such as; do I tell them how much I was making at my last job? Do I write a "thank you for interviewing" me letter after the interview? etc, etc...

This book covers all the topics that you are nervous about. Examples; what to say in a cover letter, interviewing, salary negotiations + much more. Included are some useful sample resumés and cover letters in different formats.

After reading this book, I feel much more confident that I'm handling my job hunting in a more professional manner. I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a job, or even if you have a job but hate your boss and want another one.

In general, I like the For Dummies clear and concise and easy to read format. While there are some For Dummies books that have very little substance, this is not one of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars The New Job Hunter's "Bible"
"Job Hunting For Dummies" is an easy-to-read book that spells out the most effective ways to find a job and it does so in a clear and concise manner. Even in the best of times, the job market is an imbroglio that is difficult to navigate and that is why JHFD is a must-read for all job hunters.

Although job hunting is serious business, JHFD adeptly uses humor for comic relief as well as to emphasize a point. The section on actual resume' and job interview miscues is both funny and cautionary; readers would do well to take note.

Of all the job hunting books I've read, JHFD is clearly the best. While Richard Nelson Bolles' "What Color Is Your Parachute?" has been acclaimed as the job hunter's "bible," I know from experience that it is a tedious and often contradictory piece of work that has outlived its usefulness. Accordingly, job hunters should consider bypassing "Parachute" in favor of JHFD as it has more to offer its readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crystal clear, easy to read and INFORMATIVE
Max has written the final word on finding a job! It is put together very well - a quick yet informative and in depth read. Hey! This book even helped me get a job at Robert Half International - Max's company! Love ya, Messmer! ... Read more
