Unless of course you take your roll as a leader seriously! Listen, John has done it again with Leadership 101: What Every Leader Needs to Know. Will this man never cease to produce books of such excellent quality? I sure hope not! Rather than ranting and raving about the contents of this book, let me just say this: get it, read it, you'll love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Summary of Dr. Maxwell's Leadership Concepts
I was torn in deciding how to grade this book. Clearly, anyone who has already enjoyed most of Dr. Maxwell's outstanding leadership books would find this book to be a valuable, inexpensive and highly portable reminder of those many lessons. For that person, the book is clearly a five star value! Carry it around and draw sustenance from it!! My rating above reflects this perspective, since there are lots of people who do know his work well. When you face a leadership challenge, pull this book out to refocus you and your energies in the right direction!

What about the person who's new to leadership? I would have to grade the book much lower, probably a 2 or 3. Somewhere in the middle of the book (probably between chapters 5-7), most people new to leadership would lose the thread. It's just a little too condensed. In addition, I just didn't think that several of the examples worked for the point they attempted to make. For instance, Dr. Maxwell could have found more meaningful examples for me than Princess Diana and Roberto Goizueta if I were a new leader. I would nominate instead Barbara Bush for her caring and Frances Hesselbein for preparing successors.

Here are the book's structure and key examples for its 108 jam-packed pages:

Part I: The Development of a Leader

1. Why Should I Grow as a Leader? The McDonald brothers versus Ray Kroc in developing McDonalds.

2. How Can I Grow as a Leader? Teddy Roosevelt

Part II: The Traits of a Leader

3. How Can I Become Disciplined? Jerry Rice

4. How Should I Prioritize My Life? Paul Tsongas

5. How Do I Develop Trust? Billy Graham

6. How Can I Effectively Cast Vision? Walt Disney

Part III: The Impact of Leader

7. Why Is Influence Important? Princess Diana

8. How Does Influence Work? Robert Dilenschneider

9. How Can I Extend My Influence? His father

10. How Can I Make My Leadership Last? Roberto Goizueta

Finally, what's the best part of the book? For me, it was the repetition of the Law of the Lid: Your ability to accomplish things is circumscribed until you can energize others in the same purpose. There's a nice set of graphic displays to make this point.

As a technical note, some of the information in the examples seemed dated. I don't believe that Mr. Dilenschneider has been head of Hill & Knowlton for many years . . . yet that's the way he is described. Roberto Goizueta's hand-picked successor at Coca-Cola, Douglas Ivester, did not work out (although he is described as a great success here) and had to be replaced. Paul Tsongas later reentered politics to run for president rather than smelling the roses with his family (even though he had had a recurrence of the cancer that soon killed him). It's almost as though these examples were all written a number of years ago, and not revisited.

Draw inspiration from your vision of serving others . . . and get busy!

Book Description

This highly successful undergraduate corporate finance text is recognized for its tradition as the best corporate finance textbook at teaching finance. Block and Hirt's approach focuses on pedagogy and how students learn. With the Ninth edition, the authors' careful writing style and step-by-step explanations make the text easy to understand. They also have presented a strong real world emphasis throughout this new edition. Not only will students find real-world emphasis in text examples using "hot" companies recently mentioned in the business press, but there are also Finance-In-Action boxed readings that give an in-depth look at real business decisions, and consistent placement of real company logos in the text's margins. The Ninth edition continues to present a simple and understandable story of finance for students. All of these features come together to present a comprehensive story of finance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Foundations of Financial Management, 10th Edition
Delivery was terrific. I received the book 6 days after I ordered it and it's brand new!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Finance Starter
This book is very easy to follow and serves as a good reference for more advanced finance classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, But Not Excellent
As an undergrad taking his first finance class, I have have found this book to be quite useful. The concepts are explained in simplified, less-complicated ways and make reading each chapter less frustrating than perhaps some others (compared to some of the econ texts that I have had to use!).

It is well-written, concise, and employs some very straightforward, easy-to-follow graphs/diagrams. Also, both the formulas and the exercises at the end of each chapter are quite useful.

The only reason that I did not give it a 5-star rating is because some of the chapters did not use enough "real-world examples" or hypothetical situations in some of the more challenging lessons. This might better aid those students who are new to finance or simply need another angle to better grasp the idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive, well-written finance textbook
This text is characterized by its extreme simplicty in explanation and presentation of its material. The flow of presenting the contents of each chapter is so sequentially logical that it makes the reader grasp the financial concepts very fast and effectively. Colorful illustrative diagrams are employed extensively to facilitate a high level of understanding and help the learner develop the necessary conceptual links between inter-related topics and items. In addition, it is very comprehensive and intensely supported with a "luggage" of real-life cases .I recommend this excellent text to everyone who needs to take an introductory course in corporate finance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
When it comes to Principles of Finance textbooks, readers have many options from which to choose. I've read dozens of finance textbooks and have yet to find one that tops Block & Hirt. This book is written at a level that anyone can understand and still provides a depth of coverage sufficient for a complete understanding of the discipline at an "undergraduate" level. I particularly enjoy the "balance sheet" approach taken by the authors, which is a direct contrast to many of the competing textbooks. I also appreciate the consideration given to working capital issues; a topic frequently neglected or pushed aside by other textbooks.

The examples are easy to follow, and the authors provide extensive summary and practice problems for readers to test their understanding. I've taught from a number of textbooks and have found this book to be the one that students respond to best. As is true for many disciplines, those who are unwilling to actually "read" the book or put forth any effort will struggle mightly with this material. In such a case, the fault does not lie with this particular book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wit and Wisdom of Warren Buffett
If you are used to reading public company annual reports, including the (usually) short letters from company presidents, you know how shallow, self-congratulatory and sometimes even misleading these reports can be. On the (extreme) other hand, Warren Buffett's annual letters in his Berkshire Hathaway annual reports represent detailed, on-target, lively and highly readable masterpieces of valuable education, information, and wit. You can read Buffett's annual letters for free at Berkshire Hathaway's website, but it will take you a while, since there are many of them (back to 1977) and they run 20+ pages each. Further, Buffett's various letters weren't intended to serve as serial chapters of a book. Better, you can shell out the cost of Lawrence Cunningham's thematically organized collection (220 pages or so)of Buffett's essays and gain a better appreciation of the numerous important topics that Buffett addresses. These topics include, first and foremost, the critical impact of the quality of corporate governance--Buffett was years ahead of most investors in focusing on this area. Other topics include corporate finance (addressed with a clarity that is both unusual and revealing of Buffett's powers of insight), mergers and acquisitions, accounting (Buffett is the only person I know who can regularly make accounting seem positively interesting), taxes, junk bonds and much more.

Moreover, Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway is nearly unique in its intense commitment to shareholders. The opposite (a commitment to management entrenchment and exorbitant compensation) is the norm with so many companies today that it would be easy to forget how vital shareholder primacy should be. As you read Buffett's essays you will have a model to measure other companies against--which should come in handy the next time you exercise your voting rights as a shareholder.

Life is short. As an investor or a concerned citizen-shareholder, you can learn through your own experiences, of course. There's nothing wrong with that, but the process can be long and expensive. (Depending on one's experiences, it can be very expensive.) Alternately, you can learn via Warren Buffett's lifetime of experiences distilled into a very readable, lively, fascinating collection of his essays. Buy the book-I doubt that you'll regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom from the Heartland
This collection of essays by Warren E. Buffett, compiled by Lawrence A. Cunningham, is an excellent introduction to basic investment concepts that have proven successful for the 'Oracle of Omaha' and his loyal following. The reader will want to supplement these papers periodically with more timely updates from the annual letter Buffett writes to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway. Buffett's ideas have been widely reported so there are no surprises here. To be sure, Buffett is consistent. He pokes fun at the 'efficient market' school which confuses stock price with stock value. Early on we hear him calling for the expensing of stock options and urging more transparent, segmented financial reporting by large companies. For Buffett mechanically rebalancing portfolios to achieve diversification, back in fashion, may miss the point of holding-on to your best investments for superior returns. Distinguishing between Growth and Value styles of investing is unnecessary and misleading. If you have ever wondered why Berkshire Hathaway does not pay a dividend or why it doesn't split its high stock price, Buffett gives his reasoned explanations. It was Warren Buffett's fundamental school mentor Benjamin Graham who introduced the allegory of Mr. Market and the concept of 'margin of safety' both of which get satisfactory attention here. Most importantly, I think, Buffett reminds us continually that as stock market investors we are buying for the long-term parts of real businesses that produce measurable cash flows as evidence of their intrinsic value. Real businesses that produce real value are run by dedicated, competent leaders who know how to allocate capital. Hanging-on to such deceptively simple principles can get an investor through some very rough market cycles. Reading this collection is a lot like listening to the conversation of an avuncular and very experienced elder who with great patience, common sense, and wit explains what principles have guided his (investment) life. Indeed uncommon sense and integrity are hallmarks of Warren Buffett's writings. Humor too. In what other serious investment study will you get quotations from such luminaries as Woody Allen, Mae West, and Yogi Berra. Buffett loves aphorisms to make his point. I challenge anyone reading this book not to underline or commit to memory some of these gems. For a general introduction to the fundamental school view of investing this collection is required reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delayed in print and not "OUT OF PRINT"
I have been talking to Professor Cunningham and apparently, this book is not "out of print" as amazon states (Third party private sellers are selling the book for as much as $99) but rather, just delayed in printing. He will have the next shipment of books to amazon soon, and it will be retailing for US$25. This should appear on amazon very soon, so just keep checking back!

5-0 out of 5 stars Proper Business Practices
"The Essays of Warren Buffett" is a textbook on proper business practice used at Cardozo Law. Yeah, I know you can go to the Berkshire Hathaway website and get all of Buffett's letters to the shareholders (in fact those who truly want to know more can do this). But this book cuts to the chase. It is edited in such a way that the essays are grouped in a logical manner. Thus, you don't have to plow through all the letters ( which at times can be boring and redundant). This makes reading rather convenient and efficient. The parts of the book that are most useful for an individual investor are the sections on "corporate governance" (in which Buffett describes what makes a good CEO and Board) and on "corporate finance and investing" ( in which Buffett argues against the Efficient Market Theory and argues for the Graham-Dodd approach). I found the essays on "accounting and valuation" and "accounting policy and tax matters" a bit tedious (though the section on stock options was rather interesting).

4-0 out of 5 stars Abandoned his own principles in the late 1990s
Buffet is trenchant and smart but abandoned his own principles in the late 90s after run ups of KO, FRE, and other stocks he had the foresight to purchase in the 80s. He attempts to justify this in the 90s with inapt analogies, covering up his own failure to stay true to the principles he learned at the feet of Dodd and Graham. His stockholders paid, and he has since and recently recanted. Only this leaves him in the category of those investors who deserve the platinum medal of investing .... one of the all time greats. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars From a Marketing Student
One of my marketing classes is using this book. I have experienced so much PAIN reading this book that I have to give it a 3 star to release my frustration. The chapters are extremely long. The overall concept of the book is good. There are also interesting facts and exhibits, but sometimes the book keeps repeating itself. For example, in Chapter 16 Sales Promotion, the authors talk about consumer franchise-building promotions. The same concept appears later on in the chapter over and over as individual paragraphs. I understand that a lot of the marketing concepts are interrelated, but they can be expressed much more efficiently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive in theory but current and entertaining
This book is theoretical and full of examples of applied theories of advertising. It is presently being used at an AACSB accredited University in the Marketing department and students do enjoy it because of its current content and entertaining format.

Ask the successful CEOs of major corporations, entrepreneurs, top salespeople, and pastors what characteristic is most needed for success in leadership positions, and they’ll tell you—it’s the ability to work with people.

Some people are born with great relationship skills, but those who are not can learn to improve them. In Winning with People Maxwell has translated decades of experience into 25 People Principles that anyone can learn.

Maxwell has divided the People Principles in this book according to the questions we must ask ourselves if we want to win with people:

  • Readiness: Are we prepared for relationships?
  • Connection: Are we willing to focus on others?
  • Trust: Can we build mutual trust?
  • Investment: Are we willing to invest in others?
  • Synergy: Can we create a win-win relationship?

Each section contains guiding People Principles. Some are intuitive, such as The Lens Principle: Who We Are Determines How We See Others. Others may go against your instincts, such as The Confrontation Principle: Caring for People Should Precede Confronting People. All of them are 100 percent practical!

Book Description

You're either a Purple Cow or you're not. You're either remarkable or invisible. Make your choice.

What do Starbucks and JetBlue and KrispyKreme and Apple and DutchBoy and Kensington and Zespri and Hard Candy have that you don't? How do they continue to confound critics and achieve spectacular growth, leaving behind former tried-and true brands to gasp their last?

Face it, the checklist of tired 'P's marketers have used for decades to get their product noticed -Pricing, Promotion, Publicity, to name a few-aren't working anymore. There's an exceptionally important 'P' that has to be added to the list. It's Purple Cow.

Cows, after you've seen one, or two, or ten, are boring. A Purple Cow, though...now that would be something. Purple Cow describes something phenomenal, something counterintuitive and exciting and flat out unbelievable. Every day, consumers come face to face with a lot of boring stuff-a lot of brown cows-but you can bet they won't forget a Purple Cow. And it's not a marketing function that you can slap on to your product or service. Purple Cow is inherent. It's built right in, or it's not there. Period.

In Purple Cow, Seth Godin urges you to put a Purple Cow into everything you build, and everything you do, to create something truly noticeable. It's a manifesto for marketers who want to help create products that are worth marketing in the first place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Purple works...I've tried it!
Seth Godin is the most astute marketer of the last 10 years. His latest book, Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable arrives at just the right time to save the corporate world from ruin.

Hyperbole? Not at all.

As an adjunct professor in a nearby university, I have the privilege of teaching the principles of direct marketing and advertising to the next generation of adcats and DM pros. I base a lot of my class lectures on both personal experience (I've been a direct marketing guru for nearly 15 years) and cutting edge books -- especially those from Seth Godin.

What I like most about Seth Godin (in addition to his witty, insightful style of writing) is that he walks his talk...and doesn't bother to sugar coat what's going on in the world today. He tells it like it is. Or, more accurately, how it should be.

Seth is right: This is the most challenging time in history to be part of the American workforce.

Recent news reports reveal the unemployment rate (at 6.4%) to be the highest in nine years. But the fault doesn't lie with The White House.

Companies these days are actually more interested in playing it safe than in reaching for the stars. Ditto for employees. Remarkable ones aren't getting hired any more. Ones that "fit in" are. (Remarkable ones are routinely shown the door.)

The result is an endless parade of boring products, services, and employees.

And let's not overlook Hollywood. Or the whiney music industry.

Both churn out such bland tripe that they seem bent on drowning the world in a sea of mediocrity. So they have no one to blame but themselves if sales are down.

Enter the Purple Cow.

Seth's message is simple: BE REMARKABLE.

That's it. He calls on companies to be unique and exciting. He calls on employees to be extraordinary, to think big thoughts, to stand out.

Here's a personal example. I put the principles of Seth's book to work in my own advertising agency. When I started PurpleCrayon Direct earlier this year, I aimed for a target audience roughly the same as every other agency...and got literally zero reponse.

So I stepped back, rethought my strategy, and relaunched PurpleCrayon Direct to a completely new and unique audience: Artists. We now work with painters, musicians, actors, writers, sculptors, dancers, poets -- anyone who makes his or her living (or would like to) as an Artist with a capital "A."

And it worked. Big time. The buzz has been amazing.

So I know from observing society (and talking to friends out of work and looking for jobs) that America is in trouble. Forced sameness is crippling the human spirit and destroying hope.

But I know from personal experience what the answer is: BE REMARKABLE.

Thanks to Seth Godin's latest book, I'm more excited than ever before about my professional life. I may still go down in flames with my agency. But at least I'll go down giving it my best shot, being true to myself and to my clients.

I highly recommend Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable.

It worked for me. It'll work for you, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite simply you need this book - No question!!
This is without a doubt simply the most awesome book I have ever read on the subject of marketing.

Seth truly gets it and if you buy only one book this year to improve your business this is the one - the book is provoking, challenging and most importantly it will rock your world in the best way be cause if you read and get the message your company, business, job or life will change and change forever.

If you really want to connect with Seth read all his other books and make sure that you get the new ebook that came out on the same day as this book its called 99 Cows and it goes further with the Purple Cow strategy by giving you examples all with links.

But this book is the one and only marketing book the key to what Seth is saying is that business has to be remarkable if it is to cut through the static and make itself heard.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
I feel suckered. Godin must be a clever marketer to have swindled me out of $15. There is nothing in this book that is remarkable. It's common sense: in order to be successful, you need a remarkable product. Well, duh.

1-0 out of 5 stars I think I'm really, really dumb
There is nothing remarkable about Godin's book on being remarkable. All the info in this book is basic business sense. I am an artist.. how can I possibly sign my name to a painting that I do not feel is original or remarkable?? Anyone who starts a business knows the info in this book. If you didn't think your product was better than others why on earth would you have launched it? Unless you are like really, really dumb.

4-0 out of 5 stars You can apply these principles to anything
I read an excerpt from this book in Fast Company and had to buy this and the accompanying "99 Cows". This is a great, eye- opening read because of its simplicity and brilliance. You can apply these principles to many things - I have been telling people about the "purple cow" principle as much as possible. If you want to be remarkable, this book has some good ideas to get you started or get you thinking about ways to apply the principles to your own situation. It's a fun read and very refreshing for a business-related publication. I highly recommend reading this and "99 cows". ... Read more

Book Description

An in-depth how-to look at Forex trading using the methods, analysis, and insights of a renowned trader, Raghee Horner
As the fate of the dollar against foreign currency generates both anxiety and opportunities, currency trading has been drawing much interest and a growing following among traders in the United States. The Forex market is particularly attractive for investors because it trades with no gaps and has unlimited guaranteed stop-losses. The liquidity of the Forex market and worldwide participation makes for more reliable and longer lasting trends as well.
Raghee Horner has become legendary not only as a top Forex trader but as a master teacher of trading systems and techniques. Drawing on her winning tools and methods, including classic charting techniques, this book enables a trader or investor of any skill level to understand how the Forex operates and lays out a blueprint for getting starting in this little-understood but high-potential trading vehicle.
Raghee Horner (Pompano Beach, FL) is an accomplished trader with more than fifteen years in the markets. She is the cofounder and lead trader of the EZ2 Trade Institute and an educator teaching her style of technical analysis and charting strategies to students all over the world. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my trading.
I have read countless trading books, been to all the seminars, and tried alot of software. When the dust settled Raghee's book was still standing. Not to say that the other things did'nt help but this book simplified my trading. Now I know what to look for using the blueprint in the book. The pratical and tactical methods the book has taught me has increased my pip gain tremendously. It is not a magic box, you must be patient and work hard to apply the rules in the book.I still struggle at times, but with all things practice makes us better.Thank you Raghee for making a book that makes sense.Get the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic view of one trader's style.
Aside from the editorial errors and small charts...this book is a thought-provoking classic. I believe everyone would like to speak with a successful trader and see what he or she does to achieve that success.I have never come across a book quite like this one.The author thoughtfully teaches you how she trades and shows you exactly what she does to set up the two kinds of trades she watches for, swing and momentum. At first I frankly didn't see what the difference would be since I have not actively traded and actually was more interested in the longer term view. However, the way she explains it, even if you are a longer term trader or investor if you will, one must to learn how to read charts.I was also impressed by her method of approaching news. She shows you which reports move the forex market and how to deal with news which actually was something I used to get caught up in.I feel like I have a plan that tells me what to do and where to go with each trade.I also appreciate that I only have to focus on around four to five trading tools. One can easily get lost in trying to learn or use too many. This has simplified trading for me and also shown me how to find chart patterns in the correct manner. The way she identifies chart patterns is so simple that I think I must be doing it wrong. However, when the trade works I know that I got it right!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good skills sharpener
First the bad part: Ms. Horner needs a new editor!!!!This book is full every kind of writing error there is - grammer, spelling, syntax, sentence structure - you name it.But once I got over that, I found this book to be quite helpful. The book helped me to refocus on the basics of technical trading; namely, support and resistance, the mental processes involved in entering and exiting trades, and getting confirmation from other indicators before entering a trade. These are not new techniques, but they can be lost or forgotten in the daily grind of trading. The book did introduce me to a couple of new indicators, which I look forward to experimenting with.I am an experieced trader, and I'm not sure if a beginner would get enough out of this book to develop a comprehensive trading technique, but it would certainly help.It is user-friendly and easy to read.In short, it has had a positive effect on my trading.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of time
Apart from the fact that the editor of this book should be fired, I'm not convinced that the strategy will work. The author claims to be trading the forex markets, and her students can "smell a wannabe trader from a mile" but I'm not sure if she really is a wannabe trader or a real trader. There are no trading data or anything to back up the author's claims. The only reason I'm giving it 1 star is because it might be of some use to a novice trader.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome, deserves a read
I'm totally blown away by this book. It's going to be my trading bible. It has everything.A trading plan, a q&a with the author, psychology.I was afraid I may get another general book about Forex and market paticipants and the basic indicators.I was happy to find a complete trading plan that takes all the questions out of when to buy, when to sell, how to put in my orders, how to take profits.

The book is written like the author is talking to you and I finished it in 2 days, it's that good but I could have done without the many, many typos.

There's good info here.I know I will want to review some chapters like chapter 10 fibonacci levels and chapter 26 that talks about charting the US Dollar with other currencies.I liked the chapter on prep-work which makes finding trades very simple and fast using moving averages. She teaches how to trade from 5 time frames so I have the choice to play longer term with a daily chart or a short term chart like the 15 minute although she doesn't use anything smaller than the 30 minute chart.I found I could go to even the 10 minute with her Three Classic Tools to a Three Step Set Up.I think what was also helpful is that I thought I would have to get up early or stay up late to trade forex from what I had heard at other seminars I went to but she teaches market overlap and explains that you don't have to which was my biggest worry.

Look past the typos and you'll find good info.Worth a read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goes where few texts dare to go: the real-world
I recommend this to managers as much as students.

Sure, the price seems like a lot of cash to shell out at first. But trust me, it is worth it. I had to read it for a Management class, and it started of like a typical OB text, illustrating the history of management studies (Taylor to Maslow to Mayo to Likert to ...). Good stuff, but pretty dull. Then, Hersey et al went where most scholars, even the supposedly worldly MBA types, fear to tread: real-world application!

The text covers all of the material covered Blanchard's "One Minute Manager," "Putting the One Minute Manager to Work," and a shelf load of other books. It also does a great job introducing Blanchard and Hersey's Situational Leadership, where the manager matches leadership behavior to a report's ability level and motivation. This replaces "Leadership and the One Minute Manager," and delves much deeper into the topic.

Hersey et al also cover:
- Behavioral shaping, and positive and negative reinforcement quite nicely
- Communications skills necessary to lead reports
- Power building, and using effective power bases ...
- The list literally goes on and on.

I use the concepts I was first exposed to here day in and day out. They work. My OB professor told us that, if he would be limited to just one book on management, he would choose this one. And, five years later, I agree. I am very glad that I did not sell this book back to the campus bookstore. I consult the book at least once a week while pondering both thorny and maundane problems with my employees.

You see, Dr. Davis? Some of us do listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars All about Leadership!!! Must read!
This book is one of my favorites! It leads you first through a complete review of management and leadership theories, then introduces the authors' famous SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP model and theory. This book goes into great depth about the sit-lead model and theory, and is a great read. Want to be a better leader??? Read the book by the experts! ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Organized!
I was first introduced to Situational Leadership in the military quite a few years ago. This book did a great job of dusting off the cobwebs in the memory and proving that Situational Leadership is still a viable means of leading your people.

The book provides an overview of various management and human behavior theories, such as Maslow, Herzberg, Schein, Argyris, and McGregor. Then, fits them into a nice model deemed Situational Leadership. I must say that I've read the majority of the theories already and they do fit. Plus, if followed, the model is very effective in helping a leader in real world situations.

If you buy this book, you receive a host of valuable information. I think, besides involving you with the Situational Leadership model, the best attributes are the extensive lists of additional reading that are provided to you at the end of each chapter, and at the end of the book. If you're on a journey to better yourself as a manager and leader, the exhaustive list is well worth the price of the book. It saves you from buying the duds and "fadish" management/leadership books on-line without the ability to have them in your hands prior to purchase. Plus, the book gives you a good preview to the information contained in a book before you buy it.

All in all, if you're going to invest some time and money in a management/leadership book, definitely buy this book. You need to know this information and have it at your fingertips if you're going to survive in the organizational human behavior world as a leader.

4-0 out of 5 stars How it is all linked
(!! This comment is based on the 7th edition !!)
If you know your way around organisational theory, and if you were surprised by the straightforwardness of 'The One Minute Manager', than this may be your next best buy.
The authors not only bring together several theories, but they also explore how they are linked, and what they mean in practice (after all, they are behaviorists).

If you are looking for a more theoretical underpinning of 'why the story of The One Minute Manager is so true!', you may find the answers in this book. ... Read more

Book Description

In recent years, innovative texts in mathematics, science, foreign languages, and other fields have achieved dramatic pedagogical gains by abandoning the traditional encyclopedic approach in favor of attempting to teach a short list of core principles in depth. Two well-respected writers and researchers, Bob Frank and Ben Bernanke, have shown that the less-is-more approach affords similar gains in introductory economics.Although recent editions of a few other texts have paid lip service to this new approach, Frank/Bernanke is by far the best thought out and best executed principles text in this mold. Avoiding excessive reliance on formal mathematical derivations, it presents concepts intuitively through examples drawn from familiar contexts. The authors introduce a well-articulated short list of core principles and reinforcing them by illustrating and applying each in numerous contexts.Students are periodically asked to apply these principles to answer related questions, exercises, and problems.

The text also encourages students to become "Economic Naturalists," people who employ basic economic principles to understand and explain what they observe in the world around them.An economic naturalist understands, for example, that infant safety seats are required in cars but not in airplanes because the marginal cost of space to accommodate these seats is typically zero in cars but often hundreds of dollars in airplanes. Such examples engage student interest while teaching them to see each feature of their economic landscape as the reflection of an implicit or explicit cost-benefit calculation.

The Second Edition of Frank/Bernanke follows the successful First Edition with several pedagogical improvements. Based on reviewer feedback, this edition offers (1) even more streamlined coverage of the cost-benefit approach in the introductory chapter; (2) exercises that are more closely tied to the examples; (3) expanded narrative explanations of important principles, making them more accessible to average students; and (4) expanded coverage of several key topics [see below]. The result is a revision that is motivating to students, an effective text for teaching, and an exciting first course in Economics. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An Intuitive Approach
This book is elementary. It is intended for high-school and first year uni students who have never had to go near anything even resembling economics before. It seeks to achieve what most texts only say they attempt to do: (a) get you to THINK like an economist, and (b) CONVINCE you that this mode of thought actually makes 'good sense'. Using various stories, real and imaginary, it certainly points the student down path (a). As to whether it does the same with (b) is a trickier question - not least, paradoxically, because of the success of (a); that is, one suspects students might start to get the feeling that they are being hood-winked - "Surely it can't be THAT simple", one can hear them say doubtfully. ...Out of the mouths of babes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book
This comprehensive 600 page book showed me in detail how to set up, operate, and manage a restaurant business. The author covers everything there is to know about the very risky business of running a restaurant.

As a caterer looking to open a restaurant I also found the book very helpful. I didn't need recipes or help in sales - I needed help in running the financial aspects of my business. The chpater on computers was very helpful as well. The book is very easy to read and understand. Complicated accounting subjects are simplified, easy to understand and ( almost) fun to apply.

The books nineteen chapters cover the entire process of a restaurant start-up and ongoing management. The companion CD rom which contains all the forms is worth the modest price of the book alone. I would highly recomend this book to anyone in the industry now or who wants to get started with sound financial planning. Also the extensive resource guide in the back of the book helped me locate a manufacturer I needed a part from - I will use this book often.

In their 2002 bestseller, Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan identify why people don’t get results: they don’t execute. Bossidy and Charan are back with another stellar study on organizational behavior that shows how companies can succeed if they return to reality and examine every part of their business. Confronting Reality is based on a simple concept, but many companies approach strategy and execution in a surprisingly unreal manner and even the simplest of measurement methods, like the business model, are not applied correctly.

Cisco, 3M, KLM, Home Depot, and the Thomson Corporation are just a few of the companies that Bossidy and Charan examine. To demonstrate how to examine a business using the business model, Bossidy and Charan map out external variables, financial targets, internal activities, and an iteration stage (defined as a time to "make tradeoffs, apply and develop business savvy") to prove how a dynamically evolving business model will help improve performance.

"The version of the business model we have developed is a robust, reality-based process for thinking about the specifics of your business in a holistic way. It shows you how to tie together the financial targets you must meet, the external realities of your business and internal activities such as strategy development, operating tactics, and selection and development of people."

Larry Bossidy, retired chairman and CEO of Honeywell International and Ram Charan, author of What the CEO Wants You to Know and Profitable Growth Is Everyone's Business, have once again shed industrial-strength light on how to run a successful business. --E. Brooke Gilbert

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, practical, and brilliant!
I recently finished your book "Deal Terms" and found it extremely
helpful as we are looking into our first round of financing.

This book showed me numerous issues that I would have definitely overlooked or simply not thought of.

Thanks for writing Deal Terms. Definitely an invaluable
reference for anyone in business!

5-0 out of 5 stars Direct to the Deal Terms
This book has a few sample drafts of term sheets and other legal documents. That is not the primary focus of this book. You can hire that kind of talent (legal drafting) on a per hour basis. This book helps the owners make the BUSINESS decisions necessary to avoid hamstring their new venture during this difficult passage. Included is information about what to pay your independent directors, advisory board members and senior management. Also included is what percentage of the company the founders should expect to keep, how to avoid excessive dilution during an unfortunate down round and how to present your opportunity to potential investors. All of these BUSINESS decisions are beyond the discretion of attorneys in this area, they typically instruct the entrepreneur to reflect upon the topic and then the attorney will draft it to suit.

Wilmerding interviews individuals that are representative of players an entrepreneur will encounter in getting his business funded. These real world examples of how business (strategy) items are handled or viewed by third parties are the best part of his book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Reference Guide
As a corporate attorney specializing in the area of venture capital and private equity I just completed reading "Deal Terms." I found the book to be insightful and a good resource, particularly in areas that are outside of my traditional bailiwick as a lawyer. A recommend this book for those new to the venture capital area as well as experienced investors, entrepreneurs and professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Insightful...Read Before Your Next Deal
Mr. Wilmerding's book is a great reference for every venture capitalist, entrepreneur, and investment banker. I was very impressed with the analysis of actual deal sheets, and the recommendations on specific points within a deal.

Also of particular value is the focus on the preferred and convertible stocks. The in-depth analysis of both the simple and complex types of offerrings brings to light a lot on the topic, and what to watch out for with new laws and regulations regarding these documents.

This book is a must read for anyone doing financial deals of any type. Although I have been doing deals for over 20 years, there were a couple of points in particular that I took away from this book that I now use in all the deals I do. We also had one of our portfolio entrepreneurs read it, who took away a lot and now uses this book as their "standard" for the types of deals they do.

Want to know what venture capitalists really think about deals and how they structure them? It's in this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Passable guide, but certainly not a reference book
A very brief and concise view of venture capital structures, but also somewhat basic in content. Examples could use more details (e.g., the sample weighted average anti-dilution calculations).

Disappointed that the author does not address more complicated security structures other than common and straight convertible preferred. Also, I was surprised given the recent publication date that there was not a comparison on how deal terms have changed from the dot-com boom and bust.

Certainly not a must have book for my bookshelf.

Sahlman's Entrepreneurial Venture is a much better "reference" book and cheaper too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The guide for all
I first used this as a high school student then later at univerity doing engineering. Now I use it as an engineer. It's so worn it's due for replacement. Handy size, useful tools, practical.

5-0 out of 5 stars US Navy Leadership School
This US Navy uses this book in the Leadership School for PO1s/E-6s. It's a great hip pocket book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great customer service
Great customer service. Arrived within 3 days, no problems getting the product ordered. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A management book that's meant to be USED!!!
This little book omits all the BS and jargon of textbooks and compresses the actual TOOLS for planning, process improvement, and quality control into just the information that you need to select and implement the appropriate management tools. Keep it in a desk drawer where it's handy to use, instead of on a bookshelf! I bought it for a class (in Project Management), but I USE it at work!

It is NOT a book that will give you all the theory behind the methods, nor the history of how they were developed and have evolved. It SIMPLY (and that's the beauty of it) describes when, why, and how to use the variety of tools, and gives very helpful examples showing them in action.

This ... book is worth more to me than most of my $100 textbooks combined -- and it's one I'll keep and not resell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little book on CPI
This little book can go anywhere, and gives excellent examples of continuous process improvement tools. The explanations are straightforward, and you don't need to be an engineer or statistician to understand and apply the tools, techniques, and concepts presented. ... Read more

"The Sales Bible has directed my sales successes from Sales Manager, to Sales Director, to Area Sales Director, to my current position of Vice President of Sales. Thank you, Jeffrey, for leading me up ‘ the corporate ladder.’ "
–Bryan D. Moore, vp of Sales & Marketing, Targeted Golf Solutions

"I have read many different books about selling, but Jeffrey’s book is the only one I keep on my night stand. I can look at it every night–reading only a few sentences as a refresher or whole chapters to enhance my skills."

3-0 out of 5 stars Packed with tips, in a quite unorganized fashion
Being in search of basic sales knowledge, I figured the Sales Bible would do the trick.
This book IS packed with lots of techniques, "standard" lines and useful tricks. But the delivery is quite confusing. This book has little to no structure (completely lacks a sales process for example). Some tips are repeated from one chapter to another. It feels like an aggregate of unrelated publications. The style is enjoyable to really funny, when it is not for the abusive usage of bold, italic and oversized fonts which only add to the confusion.
However, it still deserves 3 stars for being a good reference on specific stages in the sale process. Gitomer knows his stuff and it does show in the content. You might want to check the Accidental Sales Person for a more structured approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the ultimate sales training boot camp in print.
I've read them all. And as a sales trainer and speaker myself, I can say that this is the ultimate book for sales people in any industry no matter what skill level you are currently at. Plus it is very easy to read and understand. If all salespeople were to read this book, there would be no reason for sales trainers like me. If you want to do yourself and your career a huge favor, buy this book and read it. Then use the information in it to soar. I recommend it to the people I've had the opportunity to train.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
as a memory development trainer and speaker myself, I can say that this is very good book for people interested in selling their knowledge. The most important is - that this book is easy to read and follow...
If you dream about success- this is book for you. Just follow all instructions.
Author knows what he is talking about.
Also I would suggest to look for some Robert B. Cialdini books to read them at the same time.
This is book for people who are seriously thinking about their career in selling. This is not important what you sell. If you know 'how to sell' you can sell everything!

1-0 out of 5 stars This book sucks "DON'T BUY IT"
This book sucks. I have not read many books on sales but I still say this book sucks. I can write this 300 page of crap in this review.
Step one make a to do list
Step two do what is on the to do list
Three be honest
Four be persistent
I would like to know who gave this piece a good review. I wasted $12 bucks on it. Buy a different book this one is worthless.
And another question; who would publish such a big pile of crap?

5-0 out of 5 stars Want it sooner that later? Read the Book!!!
I got this book on my Birthday and I have to say happy birthday to me. This is the definitive sales text. Others might have their favorite books about different genres of selling but when its time to put a text book on the desk of a new class of salesman, this better be the book! It will shorten the learning curve and soften the hard road and focus you on the criteria and techniques, used by Mr. Gitomer, to become one of the best there is and to help you elevate your game. It's a must read for anyone who sells and wants success! God Bless you all! ... Read more
