Book Description

"I have always found Elliott Wave difficult to understand and more difficult to apply, but finally Steve Poser has written a book that makes sense and is born from real experience. This is not Elliott made easy but Elliott that makes sense. Hats off to Poser for creating the book the marketplace has needed for so long."
–Bruce M. Kamich, CMT
Adjunct Professor of Finance at Baruch College and Rutgers University
Past President of the Market Technicians Association

"Steve Poser is one of the few people I’ve met who can integrate Elliott Wave analysis into a normal conversation on the markets and make sense."
–Michael Kahn
Editor, Quick Takes Pro technical newsletter
Technical Analysis Columnist, Barron’s Online

Numerous books have tried to capture the essence of Elliott Wave theory, but they either made Elliott more complicated than it needed to be, or, in an effort to overcome the perceived complexity of analysis using Elliott, oversimplified the process.

In Applying Elliott Wave Theory Profitably, author and Elliott Wave expert Steven Poser takes a fresh approach to this proven trading strategy, giving you the most well-rounded and straightforward lesson on how to make money using Elliott Wave theory. Drawing from his many years of Elliott Wave experience, Poser:

  • Explores how and why technical analysis works, and shows you where Elliott Wave theory fits into that picture
  • Reveals each of the basic and advanced patterns that the market might trace out and discusses the market conditions that typically produce these patterns
  • Outlines how to build an efficient trading plan
  • Illustrates how to continuously update your plan in real time as the market provides you with further information by way of a constant stream of prices, volume, and news
  • Examines how to review the market from multiple time frames, so you know what degree of price retracements to expect, as well as what your risks and rewards may be

Written in a clear, easy-to-understand manner, Applying Elliott Wave Theory Profitably is a thorough and essential resource for any trader looking to better understand a proven trading strategy and boost their bottom line. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Understand the market for the first time
Before reading this book I was a struggling with the question of technical analysis vs fundamentals.I was losing money and I felt true fear for the unpredictable market.I am in forex and I just could not get it right. As soon as I could draw a trendline it was violated , I felt the prey of the market and I felt that I did not know where I was and where I was going.

By reading Mr Poser's book and learning the basic as well as the more advanced concept of elliott my whole trading life flashed in front of my eyes - how many times has technical analysis faltered me because of basic elliott patterns - I understood why technical analysis had failed me and how I could use elliott to fill the gaps and the shortcomings I had experienced . I can honestly say that this book and Mr Poser's approach as depicted in this book has turned me from struggling trader to an excelling trader. For novice to expert I would highly recommend this book ( If I were a dictator I would force it on the people )because by using this book you are unlocking the secrets of the market forever.

The way Mr Poser takes you through the trading plans and adds more and more evidence enables the average man to unlock his destiny and outperform many a portfolio manager!

Thanks Mr Poser for this book , it has had a huge effect on the destiny of my trading career as well enriching my whole life

After this book I know where I am in the market , why I am there in the market , where I am going in the market and believe it or not - even how long it will take me to get to where I am going in the market.A must read for every every trader.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly edited, complicated, save your $$
The Author speaks only about himself, with this book you won't go anywhere, this book poorly written simply forget the reader, and makes Elliott 's waves even more difficult.
the best are "Prechter books".
Don't listen to the other reviews they must be made up.
Sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A logical approach for discretionary traders...
Most of the literature on technical analysis focuses on easily compuerized techniques, such as moving averages, momentum divergences, volume/price comparisons, etc.

The authors of these books advocate a mechanical approach to technical analysis, and stress the benefits of objective rules to reduce emotional errors. These techniques have become quite sophisticated, from examining the effect of various money management algorithms, to using out of sample data to test the ability of the system to trade in different conditions.

I do not dispute that these techniques have substantial value for some traders. Yet, for all of this sophistication, I think most of this research is of limitted utility, for the simple reason that past performance has NO RELATION to future results. If a clearly definable system is discovered by a significant number of people, the markets inevitably change to render that system useless.

Then, once the system is deemed useless by the majority, it's likely they will turn profitable again.

Even system traders need to understand market psychology and logic in order to develop robust systems. This book will help them do it.

Mechanical systems neglect the underlying psychology of market participants. In an environment where the only constant is change, a successful trader needs an underlying philosophy to guide him on what is likely to lead to profits NOW, as opposed to what has happened before. This is where Mr. Poser's book comes in.

Poser teaches you that technical analysis is about understanding CURRENT market psychology. He does this through the framework of Elliott Wave theory. He also stresses the importance of other factors--including classical technical tools, computerized techniques, fundamentals, and intermarket relationships relate and enhance the interpretation of Elliot wave theory.

He describes how to develop detailed trading plans that take into account these various factors. As someone who focuses heavily on price patterns and momentum indicators, this is a method that I had sort of stumbled upon independently, as I have gained experience trading the markets.

It isn't mechanical, but it is clearly a logical and flexible framework for those up to the challenge of discretionarly trading.

4-0 out of 5 stars a concise and practical guide to using elliot wave
this book is well written and laid out beautifully. the author first explaining what each chapter is about; he slowly guides you along on the subject at hand -- how to use elliot wave theory profitably.

he starts off by discussing how we should read the waves. the basics of each wave. these are discussed in a clear and concise manner.he constantly emphasises on the need to combine various factors like the economy, using indicators, reading crowd psychology etc, into reading the waves. the intersting thing about this author is that he is trying to teach how the reader should be 'street smart' in wall street...

the next few chapters would see the author sharing some of his analysis to show you how to apply elliot wave theory profitably. this so that you can see how to apply what you've just learnt.

in the final chapter, he tries his hands at doing some predictions using what he just wrote on the dow jones, the US$ and the nikkei.

i'm giving only 4 out of 5 stars because i find some discrepencies in chart references. a few charts are not labelled as the writer referred to. causing some minor confusions. however, the content and presentation of this book is excellent. the best book on eliiot wave i've read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Elliott Wave book so far
Poser has put together a very good book. He shows you how to use Elliott Wave without turning it into some sort of mystical religion. He does not say that there are times that you cannot trade with Elliott, but he does tell you what to look for when the patterns start to get sloppy. He also shows you how to do your research (and turn it into a trading or investing strategy) and very importantly shows the link between market psychology and the wave patterns. The book also explains how to use Elliott along with technical indicators and classic chart patterns.

No book is perfect, and although Poser does give you detailed trading plans, and also presents some trading tips, I wish he would have made the tips a more consistent feature throughout the book. His clear writing style and clear depth of knowledge makes this an excellent choice for somebody who want to learn how to use Elliott Wave and why it actually works.

In the end, the book is aimed at showing you how to use Elliott to trade, which is why this book is a buy for anybody interested in learning how to use the Elliott Wave Principle in their trading. ... Read more

Book Description

THE BUSINESSWEEK, USA TODAY, AND WALL STREET JOURNAL BUSINESS BESTSELLER!

The bestselling guide to buying stocks, from the founder of Investor's Business Dailynow completely revised and updated

When it was first published, How to Make Money in Stocks hit the investing world like a jolt, providing readers with the first in-depth explanation of William J. O'Neil's innovative CAN SLIM investing method. Five years later, O'Neil, founder for the industry icon Investor's Business Daily, revised his classic text and provided readers with a newer glimpse on how the average investor can make money in the equities market.

This third edition of How to Make Money in Stocks has been revised and updated with new chapters designed to help investors increase their performance. New discussions include:

  • Greater clarification of the key CAN SLIM investment strategy
  • Expanded analysis of the general market from the top of year 2000 to the market bottom of 2001
  • New models of the greatest stock market winners that provide more basis for the ongoing effectiveness and superior performance of the CAN SLIM strategy
  • Fresh stock charts featured in two colors for easier analysis of trends
  • And an invaluable guide on how to maximize both Investor's Business Daily and www.investors.com to find winning stocks

Like his international bestselling 24 Essential Lessons for Investment Success, which stayed on international business bestseller lists for close to 6 months in 2000, How to Make Money in Stocks is the best reference for the individual investor in how to stay afloat and ahead in the rocky and volatile equities markets of the 21st century.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the beginner to moderate investor.
This is an excellent book for someone starting out in investing. It teaches you WJ O'Neil's CANSLIM method of picking stocks.

What's CANSLIM you ask? CANSLIM is a method of picking stocks developed by William J. O'Neil. He's taken his years of investing knowledge and developed a system of picking stocks that has repeatedly proven to be successful.

The book takes you through each part of this method from quarterly earnings through annual earnings, when to buy, trading volume, stock leaders, institutional support and market direction.

He also teaches you when to sell a stock even in a bad market. He'll show you how to cut your losses and why it's important to sell at the right time to prevent major losses on a stock.

Finally he takes you through some of the best stocks in recent history and shows you how to read the signs that they put out. This will teach you how to recognize today's stocks that are ready to burst from the pack and soar to new highs.

This book pushes WJ O'Neil's newspaper, Investor Business Daily, as it has much of the information needed to use the CANSLIM method. But even without his paper this book teaches you the methods needed to make money in the stock market.

All in all I think this is a great book for investors.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Book I Started Trading With...
Ten years ago, this book probably launched tens of thousands of eager investors on a journey towards riches. Two years ago, it probably ruined thousands more. I'm not saying that O'Neil's methodology doesn't work. In fact, I have great respect for O'Neil and this book because it launched me on my journey into the markets just a few years ago. The only drawback is that this methodology works best in a bull market environment. When you hit a persistent bear market like we've seen for nearly 2 years now, you are basically sitting in cash spending endless hours looking for that perfect stock to break out of a long-term consolidation. If you don't have the time to search chart-after-chart every night for the perfect setup then you should try a great investment book I just heard about called the 401(k) MarketBuster. The 401(k) MarketBuster will probably find you the same, or better, account returns in the long-run that you'd find with intermediate-term trading; at a fraction of the research time (literally minutes a year). If you are like me and have the time and inclination to learn more about the markets so you can find that elusive "perfect" setup to trade (Lord help you), then you might want to take a look at Dave Landry's book on swing trading. It will offer you more opportunities more often.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best you'll find.
This is the best system you'll find anywhere. I originally worked as a broker for a firm that followed the Bill O'Neil philosophy and that firm made $$ for their clients consistently. Now I follow this system and trade for my own accounts with even better results. My last stock, TASR, was up roughly 100% (much more on margin) in one month and I found this stock by using the fundamental & technical analysis that I've learned through Investors Business Daily along with dailygraphs (www.dailygraphs.com). His strategy of cutting losses quick and letting winners ride is necessary to preserve capital and maximize gains. AAII (American Association of Individual Investors) rated this as the best performing strategy over several years period.

4-0 out of 5 stars sparse on some concepts, but relevant in bull markets
First, I would have to comment that the criticism about IBD as a normal newspaper is unfair. Its analysis and opinions are encapsulated in the numbers, systematically compiled for any common stocks worth considering as investments. Any individual investor would see that at one dollar, IBD is a bargain. "How to Make Money in Stocks" is the guide to understanding the ratings of IBD, as well as a clear introduction to O'Neill's investing philosophy. The prevailing market conditions are very important to the success of CANSLIM, and reviews of the book written in the depths of the 2000-2002 stock funk may be colored indeed.

I, too, had some questions about "pivot points," etc. that seem sparsely described. This is because you are supposed to look at the charts. If this isn't enough, look at more charts (the book has plenty). "Pivot points" and "accumulation" are not exact concepts, so one has to practice looking at the chart and acquire an understanding of these concepts. "How to Make Money in Stocks" is one of those rare books that relies on the graphical presentation of data as much as copy writing to communicate its sometimes fuzzy ideas.

This book is superb at describing the CANSLIM method on analysis, which can be done these days with free internet sources. An excellent description for novices of investing research.

My advice would be to pick up this book, read it, buy a copy of IBD, and keep track of ten or so stocks for 60 days or so. If the market goes up and these stocks don't, look for a better method. If you need more comforting words in the newspaper to guide your money decisions, drop this stuff and hire some investment professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invest comfortably
I have been investing in the stock market since 1998. I've made my share and lost my share. However, it was always a chaotic affair. I wasn't investing based on anything solid, it was just going with the market. Besides who could lose in the 90's? Then came 2000 and 2001.
Lucky for me I ran into this book and let me tell you something, it has made me comfortable with the way I invest. I don't need to keep up with the market every minute and I don't stress as much. I also understand better how to read graphs and how to interpret market activities. A book well worth it.
It does mention the Investors Business Daily paper a lot because they publish it but it's a worthy paper also so I don't see anything wrong with that. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, useful, multidimensional, immediate use
Just finished reading this...and then immediately went into work and changed my 401(k) contribution to the maximum. Also am looking for a money market account and will begin managing my own IRA stuff...now that I feel more comfortable doing it. Plan to lend the book to friends, and called my parents to tell them to get a copy and start getting things in order...such as getting a trust instead of a will, getting LTC insurance, etc. I liked her straightforward writing style; she has a knack for explaining the "mysterious" world of investing and finance in a way you can quickly and easily understand. She makes you feel more confident...that you can indeed manage your money. In today's often confusing world, it was very helpful to hear that you can trust your intuition and you don't have to "fall prey" to financial advisors. Also, from personal experience, I know that her advice about "good brings good" and "respect of money will bring you more money" is true. My husband got in a serious accident a year ago and at the time we were in a bad bad financial position--no emergency funds, high credit card debt, prospects of little or no income. This "kick in the pants" helped me to take control of my money and now a year later our credit cards are paid off, we have 4 months of bills in the bank, and I am maxing out my 401(k). Suze Orman's book came to me just when I was ready for the next step, and I am putting it to good use. I highly recommend!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Financial Serenity
While this author describes 9 steps towards "Financial Freedom," I kept asking myself, "But what about ...?"

For those of who want a great primer into recreating your financial identity, this is an excellent beginning.

Suze Orman started out with a degree in Sociology (And she was attacked in the financial world for having "too much psychobabble").

Two events that compelled her to learn about and to be an expert on money:
1. When her father's store caught on fire, he desperately ran
into the store to grab his cash register. This caused him to
be badly burned. And it taught Suze Orman to learn about
investments, savings and related topics.
2. After college, she was a stock broker for Merrill Lynch.
This is where she learned the difference between what was
being told to the public, and what the truth about money is.

Through these events she discovered her life's work is telling people the truth about money.

Within this book Orman talks a lot about uncovering your money memories, and seeing where those money memories have led you to have the relationship to money that you now have.

She also covers many fundamental topics about retirement and investing in this book. But she does not take readers through the journey of earning a dollar, to growing that dollar into several millions - or to allowing that money to work for you.

I'd suggest that you read these seven books, after reading "Nine Steps to Financial Freedom":
1. "More Wealth Without Risk," by Charles Givens
2. "Financial Self-Defense," by Charles Givens
3. "The Millionaire Next Door," by Thomas J. Stanley, Ph.D., &
William D. Danko, Ph.D.
4. "Simple Abundance," by Sarah Ban Breathnach
5. "Creating Money," by Sanaya Roman & Duane Packer
6. "Girl, Get Your Money Straight!" by Glinda Bridgforth
7. "Open Your Mind to Prosperity," by Catherine Ponder

Where most financial books assume that you have money, and that you are not only ready to allow that money to work harder than you work, they also assume that you will be at peace with this.

Read "Nine Steps to Financial Freedom," to face your past, and to practice, for the sake of practicing to be a peace with your control over money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful bits
I found this book to be sowewhat educational with a some good ideas here and there. With books like this, I try the philosophy "absorb what is useful". Some things are very helpful and some are just conceit in my opinion. I wouldn't pay too much for it, but every little bit of simple info helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book Suze
The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom is OUTSTANDING in presentation and content. Suze is indeed the Queen of personal finance and the most widely read financial author today.

In addition to this great book, I also recommend More Wealth Without Risk and Financial Self Defense by Charles Givens. Two books that gives even more OUTSTANDING advice that you won't find anywhere else.

Great books. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite personal finance book
Although Suze has written newer material, 9 Steps is still my favorite personal finance book. I believe it is the best personal finance book bar none.

These fans of Quinn need to get a life. If Quinn is so great, how come her book doesn't sell and those that bought it [myself included] were vastly dissappointed with it.

Besides, Quinn has her own place to write reviews. Why come over here unless it is a desperate attempt to drum up interest in her pathetic book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, easy to read introduction for managing finances.
Chilton's book is a must read for anyone over the age of 10.

Written as a novel, Roy the Barber takes clients through easy steps to create wealth. He discusses everything from the new Roth IRAs to home buying, mutual funds, compounding intereset, investment strategies and how to save money necessary for achieving financial wealth. His advice is practical, sound, and realistic.

Unlike most financial books, The Wealthy Barber is free from technical jargon, and encourages readers to take action now to be smarter about money issues.

Even seasoned financial wizards benefit by discovering better ways to explain finances to others.

Read it, and pass it on to your spouse, family, children and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Rich Slowly, Steady, and with Sure Success
There are a lot of books on how to manage your money. Most are too thick, few leave a lasting impression and almost none of them are fun to read. One of the first exception is "The Wealthy Barber" by David Chilton. It is really fun. You read this book like a novel with a trouble putting it down. But by combining the common sense and humor this "novel" in its dialog style shows that sound financial planning is pretty simple stuff. And it actually makes personal money management understandable and attainable.

I believe, plenty of years from now "The Wealthy Barber" could be remembered by readers. And they could remember Mr. David Chilton not as best-selling author, but as the guy who inspired hundreds of thousands of people to save their way to prosperity. In fact, for many readers, "The Wealthy Barber" is possibly the only book they need. If ever a financial planning was written for those without any financial backgrounds, this is it - "The Wealthy Barber".

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-balanced advice
If you cannot decide whether you should own or rent a place to live in, the barber discusses this issue very thoughtfully, and this discussion will help you make the better decision.

The barber does believe that it is possible to make money in stocks. If you have discipline and courage, he thinks you can actually buy low and sell high. The barber tells you to buy undervalued stocks and then sell them later for a higher price when the real value of the stock is recognized by the market. The author does warn you that you do have to be able to tell the difference between an undervalued stock and one that is unhealthy. This is tough to do. So it is not the barber's fault if you lose money because he leaves it there for you to figure out.

What about buying low and selling high in real estate? On page 178 Mr. Chilton writes that sometimes it is possible to "buy it [real estate] at any price, sell higher." But in other parts of the book he writes that real estate prices won't always keep going up.

The 10% solution is not enough, it won't get the job done for many readers. There are signs that inflation, after a long absence, is on the way back. It should be a 15% solution.

I deduct one star because the book does not have an index. I think an index is very useful, and adds value to a book. However, on page 44, after discussing all the pros and cons of owning versus renting, the author says that buying the condo was a good idea. I became so happy that the barber put the new condo owner on the right track, I gave him back the star.

3-0 out of 5 stars All I have to say is get on with it!
I almost didn't make it through the first part of the book.
The first two chapters are a waste of time unless you are a Detroit sports fan. (And I live in Detroit)
The next two chapters talk about wills and life insurance and have some useful information if you don't know anything about either of these two areas.
Start on Chapter 6 for retirement
If you are already a home owner, invest in a 401k or some other type of IRA, and have some idea of what you do with your disposable income then skip this book.

IF YOU ARE JUST STARTING OUT, I must say this book has much more "real" concrete financial advice than a book like Rich Dad Poor Dad. If you had to pick between the two, select this one

4-0 out of 5 stars The Wordy Barber
There are true gems in this book and even though they are buried in a lot of irrelevant drivel, they are there! Do not let the silly modern 'reader friendly' fad of making any topic "easier", ' idiot proof' and 'for dummies' by the use of a conversation that is utterly off putting and idiotic, stop you from gathering the gems of knowledge in this book. Rise beyond that and get the BENEFITS!

Unlike some recent popular drivel that masquerades as ' a road to financial freedom' etc, after you have read this book you have a detailed blue print that you can follow immediately and get yourself on tract to a secure financial future.

As I said.. wordy, so 4 stars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for starters!!! Great job....Gallagher
This is an excellent book for those who want to delve into finance. It is equivalent to 2nd year material. Finance, most often offered in 3rd year here in Canada, requires knowledge of statistics (i.e. stats, econometrics...etc Intermediate level; 2nd year) when reviewing certain budgeting options; you won't need this for the book. Don't be dismaid, your not missing key information by using this 2nd year stuff (you get all of the math too at an easier to comprehend level).
The disk included with mine helps to build your financial knowledge through a website connection and with practice, but this is not mandatory and is designed for the hardcore finance junkies like myself.
It is only a 4-star because I want more challenging material, but being a 2nd year course I have to wait until 3rd year. ... Read more

Overall, I found the book pricey given the quality... The layout is also not as user friendly as other textbooks in the field. Not to mention the fact that there is almost one error in every larger example. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK FOR ALL INVESTORS
I am the type of guy that buys all the books on investing that may give me at least one simple idea that might make me extra thousands of dollars. I am recommending this book as one that all investors may gain great investment ideas from. Other books that fit in this same catagory include: (1) Making Dollars With Pennies: How The Small Investor Can Beat The Wizards On Wall Street by R. Max Bowser, and (2) Guaranteed Profits With Small Stocks by R. Max Bowser. Both of these books are available on Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must!!
I purchased this book along with the Stock market course workbook for my husband and he loves it. Being a novice on the workings of the stock market we both wanted to be prepared before investing any money into the market either with an online or a traditional broker. This book has such a wealth of inforamation in it that I suggest if you are interested in investing you need to check out this book along with its wookbook. It is money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're looking for a pace to start...
I would highly recommend this book to anyone seriously looking for a good book on how the market and its many facets work. The book is correctly named, it reads like a textbook from a 101 college course and it even has a companion book (sold separatly) to "test" your knowlege of what you read in the textbook.
Bottom line - easy to understand, thorough, informative. Will provide good general understanding of the stockmarket.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for a beginner
Easy explanations of most of the things a trader should know. There are some typos and errors, but overall the book is packed with useful information. The material does not require any previous economics or business knowledge, but will be useful for pros as well. I recommend it to everyone

5-0 out of 5 stars elliott wave principle :key to market behavior
This book is a must for anyone who believes that there is method to the stock market madness.I am a pharmacist with a scientific and mathematical background. This book explains the stock market in terms of elliott waves,in a similar way that writing is explainned by the alphabet. In essence it explains the relationship between the everyday variations and its relation to what is happenning today. It explains why the DOW is 10750 today and what the most likely scenario is for the next week, month, year.I like to get into it in a complicated way ,but it is not necessary to do so.Learning the alphabet(elliott wave pattern) is enough to allow anyone who can read and write to note whre the market is today and where it is likely to go.While the most obvious use is for stock market investing the education perhaps is even more important. The elliott wave theory says that all moves consist of 8 waves given symbols 1,2,3,4,5,a,b,c,.In a bull market 1,3,5 and b are moves upward and 2 4 a & c are downward moves. Therefore if you can workout which wave your stock is in you can predict its next move. Each 8 wave move is followed by another 8 wave move and every move is interelated. The dow appears to be in the start of wave a with a long and sharp decline in the near future. I have read the book twice and I need to read it again as it makes more sense each time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written Book On A Controversial Subject
After reading this book I've decided to study Elliot Waves very carefully. While the book is fairly short the job of constructing degrees and understanding the rules/guidelines will take time to master. The reason I feel it's worth the time is that only Elliot Wave provided a structured way to understand short and long term cycles. The stacking and governance by degree provide meaningful insight into predicting future price movement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Elliott from his editor
Either you are a so-called Elliottician or simply curious about one of the most discussed market histyory, this book is a must have.
Robert Pretcher is from far the best author I have read on Elliott wave theory. The book is clear and contains all the tenets you need to get a firm, sound graph of the Elliott Theory.
Do not expect trading systems or magic formulas, but at least a good, well written, concise but still complete analysis of the key Elliott's principles.
Suggested read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Intense!
If it is possible to predict what any financial market will do way in advance or even an hour from now, this might be the book to get you on your journey of discovering what it is. Predicated on the hypothesis that there are only 13 possible patterns for any financial market to unfold in, within any given time frame, this is both an intrigueing art and science.I myself am a professional stock investor and I was awed by Prechters knowledge. I went so far as to have him and his services be the first affliliate on my site called:momsonlinestocks.com That said, this book is so in depth and intense, it caused me to have to re-read many of the pages several times. Not the easiest read. My only complaint is he gave us "too" much detail!

This is the first place to start, to "understand" wave theory. I ended the book with the eagerness of feeling "Wow, if I can just decipher not all of the Elliot patterns, but just one that is forming that signals a huge market reversal, and if I can do it just one time, all the reading and research will be worth it." DEFINITELY WILL REQUIRE SERIOUS STUDY TO UNDERSTAND! To understand what your options are about what to "do" with your money, buy his other book "Conquor the Crash." Better yet, get them both. Once I read his book, I was hooked on spending my remaining years searching and uncovering all I can about E.W. theory. It's addicting! -) I would love to hear from anyone who has read his book or any of the fascinating Elliot material out there. We should form a club on Elliot Wave theory!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Foundation

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a decent book...
I agree with the previous reviewer who mentioned the text was very disorganized. Much of the information provided is very redundant, hence the book could have been much shorter (and less expensive).

Synopsis: National cultures and laws affect accounting standards used by different countries. The book discusses the major differences of accounting in great detail. There is a push by the International Accounting Standards Board to harmonize accounting standards so that international financial statements will be more comparable. Will they succeed? Read this book and then decide for yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best in giving full information and food for thought
I have used the book while working on my Final Thesis. I found it very informative and at the same time it is not overwhelmed with extensive discussions not relating to the main topic. It is clear and logical.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs extensive editing and reorganization.
This text suffers from its haphazard organization and lack of clarity in presentation. Textual material could be simplified if presented in tabular form. Text also suffers from lack of precision in references to accompanying tables. Material and citations tend to be a hodgepodge of older and, in some cases, obsolete studies done by other academicians. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book hurt my head!
I read this book ... I was thoroughly impressed.

I had read Schwager Market Wizards books after I had read this Technical books on trading. And although I liked it, I found many of the charts and graphs quite tedious. On the other hand was thoroughly impressed at level of information that was being presented. This book is a permanent part of my collection solely because it reads more like a college text book than a commercial investment book. He really delves deep and makes you think about what futures really are and what it takes to decipher their movements. I am looking forward to his comments on single stock futures.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Technical Analysis books
I thought Schwager did an excellent job with this book. I have read a ton of books on technical analysis and can say that this is definitely one of the best ones out there. I really liked the book, the real world chart analysis was excellent as was the section on trading systems. I recommend this book without hesitation whenever someone asks about a good technical analysis book. It is probably the best book on technical analysis I have read it does an excellent job showing how a trader actually uses and interprets charts and indicators. It ranks in the top 10 books on trading that I have and it has paid for itself many times over.

4-0 out of 5 stars There is a Cheaper Version of This Book
I first read his book in paperback "Getting Started in Tech Analysis." Both books cover the same info, except the above reviewed book has more details on trading systems and has a lot more graphs and examples, which I felt I did not need. I would recommend the less costly paperback version - it is EXCELLENT!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Guide to Technical Analysis
Now don't get me wrong by the title, there are more methods of Technical Analysis than Schwager covers in this book...However, his many years of actually trading against analytical methods has given him great insight and time to study, characterize and rate the value of many of the most common analytical methods. He is quick to point out in several places in the book that these are "Western" analytical methods, practiced in the Euro-American world of futures trading.

The beginning of the book is a laborious and elementary but complete description of basic technical techniques. The later chapters talk about building trading systems using combinations of the techniques discussed in the beginning. There is a fair amount of history lesson given as to how the methods were 'discovered' or derived. In general, although ponderous to get through, I think that this detailed analysis allows the reader to believe in the method, the author, and the application of the method.

I highly recommend this book as the single basic reference that a technical trader cannot ignore.

3-0 out of 5 stars A REASONABLY GOOD BOOK ON TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
Tis book is very complete in all the basic technical patterns such as flags, channels, head & shoulders etc. and would be a complete technical analysis course for beginners, but may prove less useful to professional traders. The second section is helpful in that you read about a trade based on a particular pattern and then turn the page to see the chart move out in time and how the trade would have worked. Its a sort of real-time trading practice. As we have often heard, these basic patterns are about 50-50 accurate and Jack seems to imply that when he said on p. 142 that "Trading success is not dependent upon been right more than half the time, or for that matter even half the time."

I think that any furthur edition of the book should get some charts that have dates below. These charts show the month and a few spikes in between to suppose dates but they are difficult to co-relate with a calendar and so it makes it a bit difficult to know on what day of the week or if it is a weekend that a particular move took place.

In Chapter 18 it states: "The systems detailed in this chapter are throwaway systems, that is systems far inferior..... to other systems I have developed to bother using.". Maybe, the ad. for this book should tell us that purchasers will get rejected systems which the author does not use! In this way one can make a more precise purchase decision. The final chapter of this book which contain 82 trading rules is to me the best part of it all. This chapter are excerpts from his market wizard books.

I must admit that I had read Jack's "Market Wizards" and his "New Market Wizards" books and I had been very pleased with them. I had written excellent reviews for both these books and would always recommend them to anyone. However, I cannot be too sure to say the same for this one on technical analysis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The main idea behind all books like this is that you MUST start some kind of business (part time, at home, whatever) to take advantage of some amazing tax laws. Making that first move is probably the hardest step for most people. Don't expect a motivational pep talk here. Think of it like this: What would you give for a 10% raise? 20%? 30%? You can save that much in taxes if you take the small step of creating a business.

Once you are ready to take that step, this book is wonderful. Other books talk about the same stuff, but this one is easy to read, well organized, and best of all, the author cites everything to the IRS code or case law. That is important since many financial gurus (think Rich Dad series) give advice that is plainly wrong or sometimes even illegal. This book is 100% legit.

I was concerned when I heard the author was associated with Tony Robbins, but Mr. Botkin makes no attempt to sell or promote any product in this book.

Read this book, save lots of money. Good luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book with a very different approach
I would have given it 4 and 1/2 stars but that wasn't an option. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars was that the book deals with small and home bases business issues and for real estate owners and investors. I am retired and thus, could only benefit from the real estate discussion. However, I did have a business before retirement.

I got this book after reading a great review in the Orlando Sentinal. This book would have saved me a bundle had I known about this information many years ago. It is cleverly written and has a lot of good information that I myself never heard from my accountant. I especially liked all the examples and tips that I found really useful in understanding the tax planning sections I also liked the elaborations, which provided some nice insights into why Congress passed various laws or on what to do about certain laws, with a great deal of clarity and specificity.

One very unsual feature that I found in this book that I never read in any other book was all the information that was provided on how to "audit proof" each and every tax planning strategy. I have used the J.K. Lasser guide in preparing my taxes, and I have never seen as much specific information on how to IRS bullet proof each deduction as Mr. Botkin provides.

Many financial books I read are rather shallow and lack a lot of the details necessary to implement what they are suggesting. Also, there seems to be a trend in financial and real estate books to serve as a giant advertisement for consulting services or for other books. This was NOT the problem in this book, which was frankly very refreshing.

Even as a retired person, I did, however, find the real estate section to be very useful. It will save me a bundle on some real estate mistakes that I didn't know about all these years.

Some reviewer noted that this book doesn't show you how to plan for the various tax laws. He must not have read the same book that I read because this book has a lot of specificity on what to do with each applicable law.

In short: I have given a copy of this book to my son and daughter. That should tell you what I think of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars You MUST read this book to get all you can for your family!
We all work too hard for our money to let ignorance of available tax reduction strategies keep us from our money. I thought this book would be boring and dry as most tax books are, but I was blown away by Mr. Botkin's style and delivery. The material is laid out extremely well and everything is immediately "actionable" to let you begin taking advantage of existing laws and structure. There are loads of provisions to your advantage in the tax codes, but it is your responsibility to take off the blinders of ignorance.

I have purchased a copy of this book for my lawyers and accountants and my key team as an invaluable resource. I recommend this book over every other tax strategy and tax saving book I have ever read!

5-0 out of 5 stars To all bogus reviewers such as "Be Careful"
To the person who reviewed my book as "Be careful" I don't know if you are a person with a competing book, have some sort of "ax to grind" or just dumb; however, NO WHERE in my book do I advocate setting up a home based business solely for tax benefits. The book is designed for people who specifically have a bona fide small business operated with an honest expectation of profit. In fact, had you taken the time to read my book, you would have seen that I get into this in great detail in Chapter 8, "How to Shield Yourself From The IRS Weapon of Classifying Your Business As a Hobby." See pages 109- through 130 and specifically mentioning what you note on the top three paragraphs of page 122. Also, just for the record, over the years, I have had numerous attorneys, accountants and even IRS agents comment on the depth of my business vs. hobby discussion.

I normally don't respond to reviews since I don't mind criticism of my book. In fact, I encourage it if it is fair so that I can make changes to future editions. However, you are way off the mark, and I, therefore, felt that you this needed a response.! I should note that I am always trying to give the best information in my material. If mistakes occur or if you feel that I can present it in a better manner, please send your suggestions to my email at trisem@aol.com. Send it to the attention of Sandy Botkin

5-0 out of 5 stars Buying another one!
I bought this book based on the reviews and they were right. I loved it - it's straightforward, easy to read, and really has great advice! To note - this book is all about lowering your taxes by having your own business. If you're not interested in this option, this book isn't for you. My mom liked it so much I gave her my copy and I'm online to buy myself another. Highly recommend! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars High Level View of Credit Derivatives
This book provides an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of credit derivatives. Tavakoli provides an excellent resource for credit risk managers who specialize in one area of credit risk management, professionals who are new to the field, or for experienced professionals who need the definitive reference of credit derivatives products.
This book is not about is the mathematical and statistical details in credit risk/portfolio modeling, but Tavakoli does a good job of highlighting various aspects of modeling (such as data availability, limitations of different approaches, etc.). For example, Tavakoli's explanation of first-to-default baskets provides a quantitative explanation of boundary conditions and a qualitative explanation of the products.

The clear, qualitative, conceptual explanations are supported by explanations that show a deep understanding of the underlying mathematics. Numerically minded readers will grasp this, but even those who are a bit numbers shy will find the quantitative examples easy to follow. Tavakoli's book enabled me to discuss the assessment and deployment of quantitative models on an even footing with professional risk managers and the rocket scientists developing these models.

I also recommend Phillip Schonbucher's book on credit derivatives for people who need to model credit derivatives. Unfortunately, the resource doesn't exist that can solve the tough problem of estimating correlation between defaults.

5-0 out of 5 stars State of the Art
Tavakoli has beautifully written a cutting-edge book on how to think about credit derivatives in the context of the global markets. One doesn't need a Ph.D. in math to understand the concepts presented here, because they are competently explained. Tavakoli evidences a deep understanding of the topic in her ability to make complicated mathematical concepts clear, and explaining how to apply credit derivatives in practice.

I noticed the reader below couldn't be bothered to actually read this book, but seems to have views on what is and isn't appropriate in a finance book. I happen to be Jewish, and thought the review smacked of anti-Semitism. Tavakoli's remarkable explanation of the development of international banking was particularly appropriate in the explanation of sovereign risk and why it occurs (mismatch of cultures and ethics among other reasons). I believe most professionals will agree there is more to credit risk than equations especially in light of recent developments in the international markets.

Tavakoli's ability to integrate multiple business and finance disciplines is one of the reasons I find this book the best product book on the market for credit derivatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Derivatives Sales view:
POSITIVE POINTS: Best indepth book on Credit Derivatives. Very readable. Explains very nicely why this derivatives are so important for banks. Non technical.

NEGATIVE POINTS: Focus on banks with only a little chapter on Credit Derivatives as investment products. No explanation how those derivatives are priced (but hey, there are loads of technical books)

5-0 out of 5 stars Credit Derivatives for the Capital Markets
Tavakoli gives a very clear description of terminology used in the international derivatives marketplace. Jargon doesn't often travel well across borders, so this is especially valuable. It is difficult enough dealing with ISDA language and foreign languages. The peculiarities of high finance add another complicating spin that Tavakoli does an excellent job of clearing up.

The coverage of leverage and total return swaps is especially valuable to asset managers and hedge funds. The use of off-balance sheet financing and upfront collateral is especially useful to those new to total return swap trading. Although Tavakoli gives examples of hubris and humor, this is a serious finance book, and although Schonbucher gives more details on the mathematics in his book "Credit Derivatives pricing, this book is not easy.

Tavakoli demonstrates a strong command of the topic and great skill in explaining a complex topic without glossing over theory. This is an excellent reference book. Credit default swaps and all of the terminology, both standard and non-standard are thoroughly explained.

The graphics are very clear, and there are lots of practical examples with straightforward explanations based on depth of experience and straightforward math. If you are new to finance, this book is not the place to start. If you have a background in bonds or other areas of the capital markets, you can tackle this book. Tavakoli assumes the reader has some experience and draws on this to make credit derivatives a part of the tool kit. You will be able to understand both the theory and real world applications of credit derivatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Credit Derivatives
Very clear explanation of credit derivatives and their diverse applications. Tavakoli explains how credit derivatives can actually be oversold on a given reference obligation creatig potential physical delivery problems in the event of default. She also explains the pros and cons of the various types of delivery, specifying various credit events, other triggers.

The explanation of the various terms of the documentation and the reasons for each is very extensive.

The section on total return swaps is particularly good. ... Read more
