Viewing the evolving relationship between the Chinese Communist Party and private entrepreneurs, this book examines the implications of recruiting entrepreneurs into the communist party. It has given rise to the label of "red capitalists."Although many foreign observers expect economic change to lead inevitably to political change in China, this book reveals that China's entrepreneurs are willing partners with the state; not an autonomous force in opposition to the state. ... Being involved in international projects for years i have found many tips in here that are useful. There are checklists, good examples, and guidelines for handling competing demands for the same people, resource allocation, and headquarters-local office conflicts. Valuable for anyone involved in international projects of all types. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars should be a bestseller
This book isn't just for enforcement people. For someone like me who isn't a law officer and just wants to understand how terrorists and drug traffickers work, this book is great.

I always thought of terrorism and drugdealing in simplistic terms of what happens in the street. Now I understand how the system works and why our fight is so unsuccessful.

What I learned:
Our laws change slowly in response to rapid innovation by the traffickers and terrorists.

Horse-and-buggy standards for banks like "know your customer" are pointless in a modern world economy.

The worldwide supply of drugs is variegated and impossible to control. As a result, our approach to fighting drugs by cooperating with drug-producing countries is stupid. My guess is that a bread-and-butter approach of customs inspections and death penalty for dealers and launderers would work better. The mindset of modern law enforcement is dead wrong.

As icing on the cake, it was interesting to learn that the Afghanis, Arabs, and Iranians who attack America for our moral degeneration are number 1 in heroin production and smuggling.

A few disappointments:

Richards barely treated terrorists. If he had, his book would have had more mass appeal.

Some of the explanations would have been clearer with flow diagrams.

I still don't understand why layering is so effective. It sounds as if a simple computer trace would unpeel the layers.

This book is not light reading. But if you really want to know how the world works, it's worth the effort!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Deatiled and Highly Informative Work!
I became acquainted with James R. Richard's Transnational Criminal Organizations, Cybercrime, and Money Laundering : A Handbook for Law Enforcement Officers, Auditors, and Financial Investigators when it was used as a text in Utica College's Economic Crime Management Master of Science Degree program in the Advanced Economic Crime as well as the Legal Concepts of Criminal Fraud and Corporate Criminal Liability graduate courses. After quickly thumbing through it, I immediately recognized that it truly contains a bounty of useful, pertinent and relevant information.

Extremely well written, it is a well flowing, very easy read that is both highly informative and enlightening. The book provides a very extensive and detailed examination of organized criminal enterprises engaged in international financial crime. The book fully details the specific steps of the placement, layering, and integration stages of money laundering as well as fully itemizing the techniques and uses of non-financial institutions (casinos, securities et al.) in money laundering. The expanded international focus documents a very detailed and thorough examination of the scope of global financial crime. The book fully integrates an expanse of information on banking, money laundering and cybercrime basics, international criminal organizations - in both a national and international context - in a manner that is easily understood by the reader.

As a police officer, I would highly recommend this book as a "must have" for the reference shelf of federal, state, local or corporate based investigators engaged in financial crimes inquiries and analysis. For the non-professional who is interested in organized crime of a more cerebral nature, the book is more than worth the purchase price.

As a college instructor (Introduction to Economic Crime Investigation at Herkimer County Community College; Herkimer, NY), this book in invaluable to the both the instructor and the student engaged in a comprehensive review of money laundering actvities.

As a side note, Mr. Richards also gives an excellent presentation and lecture on the topics and subject matter covered in his book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good choice!
My father wrote this book. Even though I am only eleven years old I already want his job. I love to read and learn and I am very interested in this field. I read his book and I can finally understand what he's talking about at the dinner table! He now tells me about his cases in the car and I love hearing about them. This book helped me learn about things I wouldn't have learned about in college. It really opened my eyes to what was out there. Good work daddy! Book Description

This up-to-date synthesis of the basic tools and survey results in international trade theory is unique in giving factor mobility equal billing with goods trade, highlighting factor flows in the context of a mainstream approach to trade theory.

The importance of the international flow of factors has grown in recent decades, primarily because of increasing returns, imperfect competition, multinational corporations, and labor migration; theories of factor mobility and trade in goods can no longer be lumped together. Using sophisticated techniques, as well as simple economic intuitions and easy-to-follow diagrams, Kar-yiu Wong systematically presents within unified frameworks all the basic analytical techniques involved in the theories of international trade and factor mobility.

Wong also provides extensive coverage of such issues as interactions between international trade in goods and capital movement, external economies of scale, monopolistic competition and differentiated products, oligopoly, welfare economics of international trade, and policy analysis for various models, and he devotes two separate chapters to multinational corporations and international labor migration. New techniques and approaches to these issues are suggested, and new results obtained for many of them.

For instance, the discussion of intra-industry trade in the presence of positive transport cost and arbitrage is new, as is the systematic examination of the relationship between international trade in goods and factor mobility with external economies of scale, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly. Of particular importance to trade theorists, these issues serve as the link between neoclassical and imperfect-competition models.

Book Description

This is a *different* book on change management. Using commonsense and practical advice tested in their work with hundreds of organizations, the authors walk the reader through clear guidelines and checklists to implement change that works.
Readers will develop a change management strategy
that starts by diagnosing the current culture and organization, then prepares for change carefully, addresses resistance to change, develops the change strategy, measures results, builds momentum for further change, and prevents deterioration and reversion.
The authors then apply their framework to two areas that are major targets for change management: implementing new technology and systems and implementing successful e-business strategies. Included throughout are real-world examples from a number of industries and government.

* This method has been used successfully in over 70 organizations in over 20 countries.
* Commonsense and jargon-free approach focuses on the realities of implementing change in real world
* Most of the book deals with getting the change established, measurement, and practical ways to sustain the change long-term

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid path through a political minefield
Changing IT is akin to herding cats because as a whole there is a legacy mindset at one end of the spectrum, and lack of discipline at the other. This book provides a workable approach to changing the culture and effecting real change.

As in their other books the authors take a project-oriented approach to the goals and objectives. Where other books that attempt to address this subject are focused on solely human factors and considerations, this one does that, but gives a structured approach as well. The set milestones and wealth of associated checklists are what set this book apart from others, and are the means of systematically changing IT in an effective manner.

To be sure, human factors are taken into consideration - the authors show a keen understanding of, and give advice for dealing with, organizational dynamics, politics and resistance to change. This is an essential set of knowledge and skill factors without which change cannot be accomplished.

The keys to the approach given in this book, though, are in the chapters dealing with defining your goals and developing an overall strategy, then selecting the approach that is most suitable for your organization. The project-oriented aspects are covered in chapters dealing with characterizing "as-is" tasks, planning, and working towards the long-term objectives. The approach also includes a viable measurement strategy with which to ascertain results, and advice on how to build enthusiasm and support - instead of resistance - as the change initiative is being implemented. A key chapter is "Prevent Reversion and Fallback", which all too frequently happens in the real world. By recognizing this particular risk in change and addressing how to prevent it the authors provide sound advice to avoid a major pitfall.

Overall this is an excellent book by two authors who I hold in high regard. I also recommend reading "RoadMap: How to understand, diagnose, and fix your organization" (ISBN 0964163527) in conjunction with this book because it contains information that will help you select and develop an optimum overall strategy for an IT organization that is customer-focused and efficiently run. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Effective International Joint Venture Management
Effective International Joint Venture Management by Dr. Ronald Charles Wolf, an American attorney resident decades in Lisbon, Portugal, has received joint acclaim from the academic world and from corporate entrepreneurs. It is a practical guide to all the essential steps required in the formation and management of an international joint venture. This explicit and lucid textbook is for all members of the international business community, lawyers, teachers and students. It is written in non-technical language but reviews thoroughly complex commercial, financial and legal topics. It is an indispensable guide for the international executives responsible for cross-border mergers and acquisitions and their advisors. Typical comments are:

"There has been a large amount written in the strategic management literature about when to set up an international joint venture (IJV), how to choose a partner, and how to manage the new venture. However, the legal aspects have not commanded great attention. Ronald Wolf remedies this oversight. His book is exhaustively detailed and deals in a very readable fashion with everything you need to know if you are contemplating an IJV. An invaluable addition to the library of the international businessman, and one not likely to gather dust," David Faulkner, Tutorial Fellow, Christ Church College, Oxford University.

"A truly useful guide to establishing and managing IJVs...[Wolf's book] has certainly enlarged the boundaries of my thinking on the subject and enriched the breadth of practical legal insights needed for executives and students," Associate Prof. Yadong, College of Business Administration, University of Hawaii.

"...[A] comprehensive guide to the complex business and legal issues of forming, governing, and even dissolving international joint ventures...Wolf offers pragmatic solutions in business-manager terms, which can be easily grasped and effectively executed...This book is recommended as an excellent step-by-step conceptual guide for those embarking on their first [international joint venture], as well as a solid reference on specific issues for the more experienced venturer," Patrick Tolbert, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, LSG Sky Chefs, Inc.

"Effective International Joint Venture Management contains a wealth of practical information, highly pragmatic advice, and an easily followed road map. This book is an indispensable tool for the business executive who needs a concise guide to all matters affecting the formation and management of IJVs," Mark J. Bissell, President & CE0, Bissell, Inc.

Book Description

In a front-page story in the Wall Street Journal, Pat Buchanan named The Myth of Free Trades as one of the cornerstones of his protectionist economic policy. Written by Dr. Ravi Batra, bestselling economist and author of The Great Depression of 1990, The Myth of Free Trade throws down the gauntlet to economic orthodoxy and challenges the gospel of free trade. Dr. Batra states that "laissez-faire has wrecked U.S. industry and shattered the American dream."

As an anecdote to our economic ills -- the federal deficit, our reliance on foreign imports, widespread downsizing, environmental destruction -- Dr. Batra sets out a five-year plan for economic revival that includes raising tariffs on imports, banning mergers among giant firms, and encouraging domestic competition by splitting huge corporations into smaller units. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Myth of "Free" Trade now needs a follow-up
Batra has done a fine job of pointing out the problem. Some want more figures, but the key here is the concept of "averaging". For that, I wish Batra had given us a simple example like the one below:

With some 6 Billion People on the planet, 5 Billion earn less than $1,000 per year (say $5 Trillion) - only about 1 Billion earn around $25,000 or more ($25 Trillion) - with 300 Million those in the USA. So, if 6 Billion people "share" the $30 Trillion total World GDP, that means an "average" of $5,000 for each person.

While a peasant in China might be temporarily better off, it would mean the economic end of the USA, Japan and Europe, then total collapse for the West. If China's current goal is to conquer the West, they can do it without a shot fired - just keep exporting while we keep importing and closing factories.

I only hope that Batra writes a follow-up book quite soon and offers up an overview that all of us can internalize. My further hope is that he can present his comments on CSPAN, CNET and CNN before the US election in November.

2-0 out of 5 stars the myth of real wages
First let me say that this is a well-written book and does a fairly good job of representing the popular perception that trade can be harmful. Batra gets only two stars from me because of how vague he is on his real wages data. This is an artificial construction that removes skilled labor from calculating wages and then shows a drop in real wages. There is no questioning that a drop in US unskilled labor's wages is happening. This, however, is a meaningless construction because the skilled labor pool is growing, as is its wages. Those are real wages too. The other form of income that Batra ignores is investment income which is available to all Americans who choose to consume less than they earn. Batra knows that the worst consequence of limiting trade is inflation. He tries to present a competition policy that will compensate for the monopolies that a government will create by restricting trade. He presents this as a way to solve the inflation problem, but he ignores the need for greater economies of scale to keep unit costs down. If the coercive power of the state creates artificial competition with firms that are too small to keep costs down, then inflation will still be a problem. It is trade that keeps SKILLED labor's wages rising and trade that keeps inflation at bay.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well thought out
Well done. It's a shame however that Batra doesn't follow through on this topic in his later books, and gets side-tracked instead by other factors which at best have secondary impact on global economy and ecology. After suffering an entire generation (30 years) of decoupling of per capita productivity and per capita real wage, one wonders how much more stress the US economy can take before it collapses. Then again, what are the limits of human ingenuity and resiliency? Can these factors reverse the damage done by the Free Trade policy? Batra's addressing this factor would have been extremely helpful. ... Read more

From 1978 through the mid-1990s, China had the fastest-growing economy in the world, and it appeared poised to dominate Asia, and beyond, in the near future. But after focusing on facts rather than theory and looking at the conditions behind the spectacular numbers, Gordon Chang presents the People's Republic as a study in wasted potential: "Peer beneath the surface, and there is a weak China, one that is in long-term decline and even on the verge of collapse. The symptoms of decay are to be seen everywhere." For a nation that has always taken a long view of history, time is quickly running out. Chang believes China has about five years to get its economy in order before it suffers a crippling financial collapse--a timeline he seriously doubts can be met.

By failing to complete its reformation, China has maintained an illusion of progress, Chang explains, but in reality has caused more problems than opportunities for would-be entrepreneurs and foreign investors. Because reform has not been fast enough or comprehensive enough, China is unable to benefit from its modernization or keep up technologically with much of the world. The government's reluctance to get rid of state-owned enterprises has not only rendered China uncompetitive just as it prepares to join the World Trade Organization, but is causing the banks--which were forced to lend money to SOEs--to fail alongside them. Widespread unemployment, corruption within the Communist party, millions of resentful peasants, and a general lack of leadership further threaten stability. The Communist party "knows how to suppress but it no longer has the power to lead," Chang writes, arguing that the party is maintaining control only through the use of brute force and the people's instinct for obedience--popular support that could deteriorate as soon as the economy plunges. Simultaneously, societal ills such as gambling, drugs, and prostitution have become huge problems.

Stuck between Communism and capitalism, "China is drifting, unwilling to go forward as fast as it must and unable to turn back." It is uncertain what will be in the way when the giant finally falls. --Shawn Carkonen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised
Having heard negative reviews from others (who apparently didn't read the book but were put off by the title), I was pleasantly surprised by Gordon Chang's work. It's one of the best written books on China I have read and presents thought-provoking conclusions based on sound economic and political analysis, which is still relevant two years after the book's publication, and despite growing euphoria about China's role in the world.

Mr. Chang's insights on China's teetering financial system, its links to the state-owned enterprises, and political/ideological constraints to full reform are especially thought-provoking, particularly now that the WTO timetable for opening of China's markets means that competing foreign banks will soon have access to Chinese customers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and Beijing goverment actually responses...
Pick up the book in Hongkong on my way to Shanghai. The inside look at China's SOE and bank and how they would cause the problems with China's future. It's a good reading for someone like me who's getting started with business in China.

Though the book is banned in China, I found a interesting Chinese publication called China International Business ... whose issue 174 has a cover story called "Breaking the Iron Rice Bowl." The issue discussed the problems with SOE and Banks. The magazine makes a complementary reading for the book. Some of the things Chang predicted that won't happen does happen. Privitization of SOE with private enterprise acquire SOE, massive layoff in the state bank and others.

One thing bad about the book is that Chang seems to lump sum the Chinese leadership as a collective like Borg in Star Trak. In reality, Chinese leadership is in constant struggle and prograssive and conservitive all win and lose sometime. WTO entry is a victory for the prograssive.

Also, I think Chang use too much Western standard judging Chinese politics. There are no "Read my lip" politics in Chinese politics. There are always something that can be done but never be said.

1-0 out of 5 stars highly opinionated - few concrete facts
Motivated by a recent visit to China I have begun reading a few books on the subject. G. Chang's has disappointed not so much because it is very pessimistic (as I am certain there are many reasons to be) but rather because of the few facts he delivers. There is a lot of repetitive argument but little to substantiate. For example the accession of China to the WTO is mentioned every so often as an immense problem, yet there is no concrete mention of the sort of problems this will bring China.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gordon Chang Mea Culpa
Go to Jamestown.org to read Gordon Chang professing his complete and utter ignorance -- slight exageration. Like all China experts (economists more or less excluded), Gordon Chang was trying to paint a picture of the place by viewing it through a straw.

I shouldn't rag on him too much. When facts repudiate his early analysis, at least he is man enough to retract his more egregious assessments.

So Gordon Chang gets 3 stars for sucking it up and being a man... but his book still deserves 1 Star.

4-0 out of 5 stars open your eyes
To those 'China experts' who base their criticisms of this book on what they have seen in the tourist areas of Shanghai, Beijing, or Guangzhou, I would recommend that a healthy dose of reality is needed. When I flipped through this book when I was still in the West, I wrote the author off as being a pessimest with a chip of his shoulder, and only glanced through this book. But after wandering through the countryside and N.E of China, it became readily apparent that he was speaking in sooth. The facade of China that is presented to the outside world is scarily like the backgrounds used in the old Westerns- a strong gust of wind, and the whole thing will fall over. Perhaps time will prove the author wrong- I hope that it does. I will be sure to give this book a thorough reading when I get back home. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful overview of the global auto industry
Author Jonathan Mantle is a multinational, who "divides his time between New York, London, and the Far East."His book gives us a crisp overview of the global auto industry, but mostly covers post World War II developments to 1994.He focuses on several themes. One is the relationship between Nazi Germany and the later role of various participants in the auto industry. His story begins with the development of what became the Volkwagen.Dr. Porsche and Louis Renault were possible Nazi collaborators. Both Ford and General Motors continued to operate their plants in Germany during World War II and were major suppliers of trucks and half-tracks to the Third Reich.GM's Opel subsidiary also made engines for Messerschmidts including Germany's jet engine.

Another theme is the development of "people's cars," smaller, affordable automobiles for the masses-especially as Europe recovered from World War II.The VW Beetle was the most successful of these, but others include Fiat's Nuova Cinquecento, Citroen's Deux Chevaux (2CV), the Morris Mini Minor, Ford of Britain's Cortina, East Germany's Trabant, and Korea's Hyundai Pony.He mentions the Ford Pinto and the Chevy Vega, but generally covers only selected aspects of the US story.

A third theme is the introduction of auto manufacturing technology to developing countries. The story of Japan, Korea, and the Soviet Union are told in detail. There is some mention of efforts throughout the globe.

Finally, Mantle describes the labor struggles especially in Europe. The demise of the British auto industry was caused by strong unions and inflexible work rules.Similar stories are told of Italy.Successful efforts to reach workable union compromises in the US and Germany are also described.

Inevitably a complete chronology of industry sinks into details of various companies' marketing efforts. The latter half of the book tends to get bogged down, though the author makes a valiant effort to focus on major developments. But this leaves a story without a climax. The dialogue continues to 1994 and ends with a brief epilogue.

This is a useful overview of the global auto business with the history of major players. The author does a reasonable job of hitting the high points.References.Select bibliography.Index.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Great Potential, Nevertheless a Great Fall
I liked the book - a lot. But there were too mant questions left unaswered. Frankly, if Mr.Mantle published all the materials as a different book that he would have collected for writing this, that may answer a lot.In short, he cut too much out of a great length of fascinating and valuableinformation.

Please, do write it again, or revise this book fully. Iwill buy that. For the time being, this book is just a reference of chaos. And adamn good one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty poor stuff
Poor research, poor writing, poorly organised

1-0 out of 5 stars A book tainted with racists comments and research errors
His historical research is pretty poor when in the page 92 he wrote: "In 1967, President Salinas of Mexico had asked Volskwagenwerk to build the Mexican peoples' car".

In 1967, the mexican president was Díaz Ordaz, and Salinas took office until 1988.

And in the same page too, when talking about that the Volskwagen succeeded as a masses car in Africa and Latin-America he writes :

"...the Beetle had become the vehicle of freedom and mobility for races whom Hitler and Speer would have damned as Untermenschen (subhuman) and consigned to Nacht und Nebel (night and fog = gas chamber)"

What's the point of this comment Mr Mantle?

Through all the book the author seems to be interested in remarking the Nazi background of Henry Ford, the Ford Co. and GM as a way of celebrating them, it seems.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great potential, but poor follow through
I heard the author, Jonathon Mantle on a radio show and became quite excited by the prospect of reading his book. It seemed like an accessible yet critical analysis of the car industry from a decidely non-"Car and Driver" enthusiasts point of view.Unfortunately, it turns out the entire book is just a gloss, very short chapters that are almost contentless.I felt cheated.Important subjects are mentioned and then left, some longer chapters are on mundane issues such as industrial sabotage while really important issues such as the collusion of car and chemical industries to destroy public transportation are only briefly noted. The saving grace was a very good apendix and bibliography that should have been used more in the body of the book.I thought the whole thing a very weak effort. If I could I would return the book to Amazon for a refund. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is essential to appreciating the Chinese psyche...
Particularly impressive is the author's approach at presenting the Chinese thought process in such a manner that Westerners can not only understand the Chinese psyche, but respect and learn from it as well. This book was perhaps one of the most enlightening books I have read in a while. There is a a concerted effort to show business protocol and potential avenues of entry, but more importantly this book addresses the fundamental social concepts that need to be FULLY understood before attempting to grow in China.

5-0 out of 5 stars authorative and insightful
Of the vast number of books about China, this one is a very useful account of how successfully doing business in China. Western Managers at the forefront in China should read this book which brings together a lifetime of research and practice on China. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Corporate branding consultant promotes his view
Before buying this book it may help you to know that the writer is CEO of CoreBrand - Corporate Branding LLC, a smaller version of Roper Starch Worldwide, or Interbrand. As such it treads a thin line between general usefulness to the marketing manager and promotional material for CoreBrands own proprietary models such as their "brand power" ranking system. Although the book does not give away too many secrets about how CoreBrand's models actually work.

Whether the text will be of use to you depends largely on your needs. For a marketing manager the price of this book is a lot cheaper than a consultant's per diem. For an MSc or MBA in Marketing this book is not academically rigorous enough to be of much use to you. There are a wealth of academic texts that will give greater insight and hard case evidence into the pros and cons of globalizing brands. Author names to search under are Aaker, Keller, Usunier, Jeannet, Hollensen, Kashani among others. ... Read more
