5-0 out of 5 stars Good Comprehensive Guide
Has your portfolio taken a butt-kicking lately?

Obviously, it's a fact that millions of Americans currently own and will continue to purchase mutual funds. Today many are realizing they didn't monitor, change, or properly allocate some of their funds. Obviously, many will depend on them in the future. 401Ks
are also mutual funds, as well as the traditional and Roth IRA, the 403b among others. Since so many are participating and people will continue to pour billions of dollars into them, the beginning individual mutual fund holder should have this book.

It will primarily benefit those who are new to mutual funds or those who want to increase their general knowledge. Simple, precise explanations. Explanations on proper and true diversification, rates and risk of return, asset allocation, and appropriate risk based upon one's attitude, age, and stomach. It tells one how to look at how a particular fund operates and what it's invested in. Terms such as diversification, dollar-cost averaging, and the fact that past performance is no guarantee of future results are usually known to those who've followed mutual funds already. It is good to understand and calculate the true "cost" of a fund. Declining backend loaded funds are o.k. in solid performing funds that an individual will hold for a period of 5 yeas or more. But does one know if they are gong to be in a fund for five years? When a new fun manager takes over the operations and asset allocation of a fund, it is important to note how and where there may be changes. Know the difference between a micro, small, medium, and large cap index fund. How is a cap defined? Know the difference between a balance, value, international, emerging market, index, and global fund. Global fund? That means most of the investment allocation is overseas right? Nope. Often, most of the fund's holdings are in domestic (American) companies which means the global fund may have the same holdings as your U.S. blue chip, or more domestically oriented funds. Owning more mutual funds, and even funds in different families, means the more diversification correct? No. One can achieve the same diversification with 7 funds as 17. Even moreso. In addition to this book check out Bob Brinker on the radio.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good mutual fund book for beginners
That is THE book I am looking for!!! It is very easy to read and follow for beginners like me. It provides an overall review about the whole industry, major players, popular funds, and basic strategies. It emphasizes a lot on the importance of diversifying the portofolio and how to do that. The book serves well to prevent beginners from making BIG investment mistakes.
Of course, it is a MORNINGSTAR book. It is all about Morningstar methods and tools. And I discovered that most of advanced tools recommended by authors are NOT free.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good discussion of Mutual Fund investing from the experts
Morningstar is the recognized name in evaluating mutual funds. This book shares some of their insight. The advice is fairly straightforward and not earth-shaking: set your goals, pick an assett allocation in line with your goals and risk tolerance, diversify. From there they go into picking funds addressing such things as evaluating fund manager, looking at costs, judging past performance etc. I found the book helpful, but I am more philosophically aligned with the advice in Bogle's book (Common Sense on Mutual Funds : New Imperatives for the Intelligent Investor by John C. Bogle) that emphasizes index funds. I thinking chasing hot funds can almost be as bad as chasing hot stocks. Finally, the book deals strictly with mutual funds. Probably need a second reference to fully deal with you investment life (insurance, etc).

1-0 out of 5 stars Seriously misleading
Morningstar has tremendous market power and reputation, and this book builds off that. But academic work, often published on the Internet and summarized at sites like ABetterWayToInvest, show that Morningstar ratings have no predictive value whatsoever. Doesn't that undermine this sort of book?

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I find investing with confidence to be a fairly overwhelming task and have found this book to be very helpful. It explains the concepts in a straightforward way and summarizes the main points of each chapter with bullet points at the end of the chapter. If you are already a whiz in this subject, you may not find the book helpful, but if you want an orientation to how mutual funds work and want to feel more empowered in your investing decisions, this book can help. ... Book Description

Why do so many otherwise smart people make foolish financial choices? Why do investors sell stocks just before they skyrocket -- and cling to others as they plummer? Why do shoppers overspend when using credit cards rather than cash? What do our habits of tipping or buying lottery tickets indicate about our relationship with money?

In this fascinating investigation of the ways we spend, invest, save, borrow, and waste money, Gary Belsky and Thomas Gilovich reveal the psychological causes -- the patterns of thinking and decision making -- of irrational behavior. Most important, they focus on the decisions we make every day and, using entertaining examples, provide invaluable tips on avoiding the financial faux pas that can cost thousands of dollars each year. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars BAD THINKING HABITS "STALL" YOUR ECONOMIC PROGRESS
WHY SMART PEOPLE MAKE BIG MONEY MISTAKES is full of examples of decisions you might have to make. You get to choose an option, and then the authors tell you what you should have chosen. This is a great learning technique to bring home the lessons of this superb book. The authors point out several biases that most people have about money (such as it's okay to blow certain money, but not other money -- all money is really the same), themselves (people always overrate their abilities and get taken as a result), and circumstances (even people who got an A in statistics will usually misanalyze the risks they take). Since money is ultimately about math, a lot of your lifetime income and earning potential is lost in the process of following these biases. This book could make or save you a million dollars. You cannot afford not to read it. I was reminded of a parallel book on the same sorts of problems about bad thinking habits as they apply to work situations called "The 2,000 Percent Solution" which you should also read. If you use the lessons of both books, you will be enormously better off financially in your lifetime. It'll be like owning the casino, instead of losing money in it. Good luck!

3-0 out of 5 stars It answers some of the whys but does not tell how
This book is quite a smart blending of economics, financial management and trading psychology that targets at the average investors who are supposed to be not knowlegable in the above aspects.

In 203 pages and 7+2 chapters, the authors tell 1) how mental accounting can help you save or cost you money 2) how loss aversion and the sunk cost fallacy lead you to throw good money after bad 3) how the status quo bias (resistance to change) and the endowment effect make financial choices difficult 4) how ignorance about math and probabilities can hurt you 5) why important decisions are based on unimportant information 6) how costly it can be of overconfidence 7) how dangerous it is to rely on tips and the financial moves of others.

The authors on the average spend 3/4 or even 4/5 of each chapter to tell a problem, and the rest to give a summary and several points on the means of correction, which I believe those to be far from helpful. (I always have the opinion that for improvement in behavioral psychology, a systematic approach that guide the readers step by step and in great detail is a must).

To echo on my review, I would like to quote what's written on the first sentence of the conclusion chapter. -----"Life would be a lot simpler if we could summarize the ideas presented in this book with a set of prescriptive nuggest - "The top ten mental moneys secret" or "The seven habits of financially effective people." Unfortunately, there are no easy fixes for many of the issues we've touched upon. Change is often hard won..----My dear authors, you intended to make it happen in this book, but you failed. I am afraid that you had made your readers worse off by reading your book, coz you had already led them into the status quo bias and anchoring you described in chapter 3 and 5.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid start to understanding behavioral finance
Belsky does a very good job introducing many of the crazy things people do with their money, a good beginning to explain why markets are not efficient and an important fact to understand.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overated Book
While some of the book is interesting it is more geared for the beginner in investing. A lot of the issues brought up are nothing more than common sense. I read it in a couple of days and felt let down by the simplistic approach to investing problems and the suggested solutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
It leaves you begging for more. The problem is that at times they talk down to the reader --a little journalistic, more than warranted by the topic.
Still the more readable work on behavioral economics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Learning
This book will educate you from ignorance to near-expert levels by simply following along with the step-by-step sytem outlined so simple in its pages. It is every bit as powerful and effective for its subject-matter as Tom Leonardi's "Secrets of Sensual Lovemaking" and Clint Arthur's video guide "New Sex Now". I would highly recommend that readers get this book if they are serious about mastering their personal finances, and get the other two if they are desiring improvement in their personal relationship with a loved-one. These are all very great products which are e-z to use, simple to learn, and very effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for those who need a simple, clear financial plan
If you already read financial books, this isn't for you (you'll already know everything in this book) But for the rest of us, this is perfect- a clear, easy and, most importantly, personalized plan for achieving financial goals and staying out of debt, achieving economic security and retiring comfortably. Bach's examples are inspiring and he has tips for controlling expenses - from waiting 48 hours before buying anything that costs $100.00 or more to showing how saving as little as 3.33 a day can add up to significant savings over time. His graphs and tables are very easy to follow and his worksheets are equally simple.
Perfect for anyone wanting to save more, from students just out of college to families in a budget crunch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Balancing YOUR values and money management
We gave this book to each of our 7 children. Within a week, one child had reported back that their family had discovered how they could save $1500 a year using the principles found in the latte factor.
This book teaches money management skills that are based on one's personal values. It takes one through excercises designed to help one identify what values are important, and then based on those values develop financial goals. For example, if missionary work is an important goal, this book will help one develop a plan for saving towards that goal. Mr. Bach emphasizes that YOUR values should drive your financial planning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Your Hands Dirty To Enrich Your Finances & Your Life!
The reason I like David Bach so much is he doesn't give dry advice. He coaches and cajoles you into figuring out what your values and goals are, and then helps you examine how your finances can get you there. I love his books Smart Women Finish Rich and Smart Couples Finish Rich, and hoped this work book would be a valuable addition.

It is very helpful, and just the coaching/figuring life values part is worth far more than the purchase price. I am confused, though, as to whether this is supposed to be a companion guide to his "Finish Rich" books, or if it's a stand alone book. It does seem to contain much of the information from his books, without as many anecdotes (which I personally enjoy - they make the material come alive) - so there is overlap, but not completely.

My advice to you is to but this AS WELL AS the Smart Women (or Couples) Finish Rich book. Read the main book so you get the wonderful personal flavor that Bach imparts, but use the workbook to do the exercises. It's a little more expensive since you're buying two books, but for my husband & I, it's been worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Just What I Needed!!
I just started doing the exercises in the workbook, and this is hands down the best book on personal finance I may have ever picked up. The presentation of the material is very straight-forward, and really allows the reader to get a firm grasp on their financial situation. I look forward to reading more books by Mr. Bach in the very near future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for ALL Households
After using the third edition of The Budget Kit, I anxiously awaited the 4th edition and was not disappointed! The Budget Kit is a fantastic resource for helping to get your finances in order. It's a great way to track where your money is going or has gone in the past so that you can stay on top of your financial situation. Of course, this means stepping out of your comfort zone and facing your financial situation in the face. However, The Budget Kit is the best way I've found to do just that without leaving you discouraged at the end of the process. In fact, once you've gone through the relevant pages in this book you will be in control of your finances, not controlled by them. The handy perforated sheets make it easy to put what you need together and the Mvelopes program is a perfect companion to the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple tool that can make a tremendous difference.
Careful budgeting can be a crucial tool for managing your money and getting out of debt -- and this easy-to-use workbook can help you gain control of your spending and organize your records once and for all! The comprehensive worksheets and charts allow you to set financial goals, plan and monitor your spending. It even helps you organize for tax time. Inspiring stories from people who have used The Budget Kit to change their financial lives for the better will keep you motivated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Budgeting
I am a veteran Certified Financial Planner professional and personal finance author. I've looked for years to find a practical and useful budgeting book to recommend to clients and consumers. Judy Lawrence wrote the best book on budgeting I've seen by far. Most similar products are painfully boring. This book is worth the money and implementing this workbook is absolutely worth your time! It's all about cash flow. Know where you are. Begin managing your cash flow with this workbook and you'll get where you want to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A first-rate household tool
Ms. Lawrence has compiled a simple, no-nonsense approach to understanding and managing one's financial life. Her recommendations and examples are superb, and she communicates the "big picture" effectively. The book is a complete kit by itself, and the associated website offers more outstanding advice and useful tools. Largely due to this book, my wife and I finally understand our household's cash flow, and, more importantly, each other's perspective of money management. I am recommending this book to friends, family, and associates.

5-0 out of 5 stars I got myself out of debt with this book
When I first tried to make a budget using this book I spent a week crying. How could I possibly accomplish my goal to get out of debt and have any kind of fun? Once I actually starting living with the budget I found it very freeing.

The first year that the holiday season came around and my money for gifts and travel was sitting there waiting for me I was thrilled.

3 years later I am out of debt and that initially "impossible" amount of money that was going into credit card payments is now going into savings account :-)

Last year I REALLY wanted a photo printer mid year. Did I pull out a credit card and buy it? Nope. I went to my handy 12 month plan of occasional expensesm and thought about it. Did I really want the printer more than a hair cut, my next clothing allowance and a bit off of vaction budget? Yup. There was the money for my printer. No guilt. No credit cards.

This book is a great tool to get rid of that awful out of control feeling and come up with a plan. My book for year number 4 is going into my shoping cart now. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for people who want to learn how to crunch some numbers.
If you are looking for a book that actually gives you good examples that will teach you to crunch some numbers on your own and prepare accounting statements and such, then this is NOT the book for you. It has a lot of writing about the different areas of accounting, but it did little for me. I was looking for a book that gave me real life examples that could help me understand how to do minimal accounting for my smal business. Some of the other introduction to accounting books are much better in this regard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good book for Financial and Mangerial Accounting
This is a great book for a person to use to suplment what is learned and practiced in Both entry level college accounting classes. It really will help you get a better grade in the class by reinforcing and explainations that are different then your typical college textbook. I highly reccomend this book for any college student that will be taking accounting, it is well worth it's price and I believe if read during the semester along with the practice in your class you will get a better grade. I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars this seems to be another great success by the dummies series
I have not read the book but I am familiar with the series. To me it seems to be a very good book. My advice: do not listen to those who give this book a low rating

2-0 out of 5 stars not so exciting
This book is quite disappointing, and I (someone with no accounting background) find it boring and too easy--the manual for an accounting software seems more exciting than this. I feel there is little about accounting in this book; rather, I find a huge section praising what accountants do. I think if numbers give you a headache and you abhor math, you may consider laboring through this book. Otherwise, try something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for you if your looking for a bookkeeping treatise.
This book is great (I mean great) if you need to understand what is profit, whats in a balance sheet, how to understand it, whats in an income statement. What are assets, etc, etc. This book will open your eyes. Like others have said its not about double entry bookkeeping, or how to prepare your balance sheet. Find that elsewhere. This book addresses what the numbers mean and how to follow them to come to conclusions and how to use that information.

Let me put it this way. If you have a small business, or are put into a position where you need to manage money for a business, or need to buy a business. This book will help you if your not accountant savy.

Its a great book, and is very well written. Another five star success for the dummies series. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, needs more instruction
I happen to have Victor Hallman's class at the Wharton School, and we use this as the text. As a result, I have had the unfortunate task of committing to memory large portions of this book. In general, I find the book to be thoroughly comprehensive in describing financial products and planning techniques. Hallman and Rosenbloom are conservative, and they incorporate a sophisticated knowledge of both tax law and financial theory. This volume, however, is somewhat outdated in that it does not include the 2001 tax relief act that phases out the estate tax and lowers the highest federal income tax bracket. In addition, I think that the book lacks instruction. Specifically, there should be more hypothetical scenarios of individuals in certain financial scenarios and suggestions about what tools they can use to improve their situation. That would make it more accessible to the average reader instead of simply the professional planner.

5-0 out of 5 stars When can we expect the sixth edition?
In the preface to the fifth edition (1993) references are made to the tax law changes of the late 80's up to and inclusive of 1990. Since we are into 1999 and there have been interim tax law changes is a sixth edition in the works?

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive survey of planning strategies
In 1975, the first edition of this book pointed out that personal financial planning is an extension of consumerism. Planning with objectives in mind helps consumers analyze the different financial products individually and in coordination with each other.

The process has gotten so complex that few families can do it without help anymore. This edition has been updated and expanded to include more description of insurance, mutual funds, investment strategies, and retirement and estate issues. The authors' main bias is in favor of the planning process per se, not any one particular approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical;no nonsense
I read this book when it was still in its 3rd edition. I was just beginning to learn about investing but I didn't know WHO to ask and I didn't trust alot of the hype that was out there. This was pre-1987 plunge. I found this to be a no nonsense book; particularly helpful for "first-timers". I appreciate that it didn't endorse any particular investment entity or product. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Retire on Less Than You Think by Fred Brock
This work focuses your attention on the amount of money needed
during retirement-taking into consideration the
best places to retire and control of unnecessary expenditures.
Bellington, Washington, Iowa City and Sarasota, Florida are
cited as preferred retirement communities. Strategies to retire
slightly later can yield significant benefits in the size of
the monthly income resulting from social security. In some cases,
a delay of even 3-4 years in retirement can result in getting
a 50% increase in the monthly allotment. The author recommends
to simplify life in order to maximize the benefit from your
monthly income. This book is an excellent supplemental reference
for your retirement planning. As such, it is well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars New perspective on retirement!
This book is truly a new perspective than the one you hear from the financial community. Fred Brock debunks the myths that it takes millions of dollars to retire. Every financial website has a calculator to tell you how much you have to save and invest to have millions to retire. This just isn't practical for most people. He shows that if you own a home with a 30-yr. mortgage, by the time you retire it should be paid off. So, there is no longer a mortgage payment which is usually your greatest expense. Also, if you move to a city that is one of the best places to retire (he gives the web address to find these cities), the money you have will go much further while maintaining the same or better standard of living. Also, healthcare is a concern for retirees. He directs you to ehealthinsurance.com to compare rates. I did this and changed my insurance plan and am saving $50/month. This book is an eye-opener for anyone planning to retire but after reading the book you should feel relieved that you can really can retire on less than you think.

1-0 out of 5 stars Political NOT practical
If you can get past the author's jaded political views on the Canadian healthcare system and his rose colored view of Social Security's viability, you'll find not much more than a simple worksheet by which to calculate your post-retirement needs.
The practical suggestions (there are some) are limited and at times obvious.....ie: Ignore Wall Street's rules of thumb on how much you'll need to live on. The rest is NY Times op-ed filler. What a shame.....he had the right idea...just didn't follow through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Advice
What a useful book! So many of the magazine articles and books I read about retirement these days seem to spit out the same old stuff, again and again. But this book is a surprise. From the moment I opened it, I was delighted to find that someone has finally brought some fresh eyes to the subject of retirement. I'm probably like many other people in believing the same myths about retirement that this book debunks. Most of the time it seems that the so-called experts enjoy just making us afraid of what we won't have when we retire. I'm happy to say this book shows us what we can have and just how we can get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
What a refreshing take on retirement! Instead of retirement plans that make life wonderful for Wall Street brokers and mutual fund companies, Mr. Brock, gasp, has some serious ideas here for potential retirees. He shows how you don't need as much to retire as the fund companies would like you to think you need. And why would they like you to think that? Because they make money off of your investments. This book also puts the so-called Social Security crisis in perspective, showing how there really isn't a crisis at all. The system is rock solid for years to come. (Who would gain from privatizing Social Security? Wall Street.) One of the amazing things about this book, with all these "radical" notions, is that it is written by a columnist for the establishment - The New York Times. Buy this book and learn how to get out of the rat race a little bit earlier. ... Read more

Book Description

Based on a people-tested and time-tested system, this book gives you detailed strategies to show you how to master your money by budgeting effectively, reducing debt, and investing wisely. It examines the reasons why we struggle with spending, borrowing, and saving, and how to get these habits under control. The book is based on 10 step-by-step principles that build upon each other, culminating in an entire system that gets to the heart of: why we spend, and how to track and control spending; the factors that keep people perpetually in debt, and how you can eliminate debt completely (including mortgage) in nine years or less; why you may not be saving as much as you'd like, and how you can velocitize your money for future wealth. Also included is a section on tax reduction which dispels the myths surrounding taxation that keep people paying more than the law actually requires. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but the authors want to sell you more than the book.
This book is full of valuable financial information, but then, so are many books. What sets this one apart from others is that, in addition to the standard good advice, it approaches money from the point of view of emotion.

The book starts out by having the reader examine how s/he feels when spending money. E.g., does it give one a bit of a thrill, or does it leave one feeling guilty? It then proceeds to a more traditional exposition of the lessons of finance, but the "emotional" approach permeates the book and allows one to see money issues in a new light.

The downside to this book, and the primary reason that I'm giving it four stars and not five, is that the authors use it, at times, as a catalog for their financial and estate-planning products. If you can ignore having overpriced "estate planning kits" marketed to you by those who are otherwise trying to help your finances, then it's worthwhile to read this book... even for those who have read more than their fair share of personal-finance books. It felt a little unseemly (to me anyway) to be reading how important it is not to spend money unnecessarily, and then in the next chapter read about how one needed their estate-planning kit that almost certainly provides, but at a much higher cost, no more information than the Dummies book on the same topic.

All things considered though--taken with a grain of salt--the book is very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Stuff!! Dare You To Implement It And Stick To IT!
This book is great. I will read it over and over for the rest of my life. Its entertaining and yet dense enough to be used as reference material well after you finish it. Amazingly organized. The subject matter progresses just as it should and the real life examples really bring the lessons to life. Empower yourself and think about your future and that of your children. Plan and never be in want. Not a strain to implement. Good for any situation. Go!!! That you folks at Money Mastery!!! I am now aware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kept Financial Secret In America.
WOW: As a working mom, I like to read finsncial books to help my family. This is clearly the best financial and tax planning book that I have ever read, as the other reviewers have also noted. It is clear, concise, simply written, and chuck full of financial and tax planning strategies. There is an especially good tax section by an IRS attorney that was immensely helpful for my small business and for people who are thinking of starting a small business. For example, I didn't know that I could deduct all my dry cleaning and laundry expenses after a business trip. The discussion on deducting my entertainment and golf was particularly interesting.

I have read many financial books including the Rich Dad/ Poor Dad series and "The Millionaire Next Door" by Stanley, and this book blows them all out of the water.

Trust me: This book is one of the better kept financial secrets. Its too bad these authors don't promote it more because it is fabulous. If there is any one financial book that you should read and give to your children, this one is it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding advice

Book Description

Blind Faith takes head on the unquestioned financial dogma of modern times: that stocks are the best long-term investment you will ever make. But, as Ed Winslow ably reveals, the way we’ve been counseled to "play the market" amounts to little more than gambling, not investing. The time-honored means for controlling risk: asset allocation, diversification and having a long-term time horizon are inadequate. Blind Faith offers a new and easily understood means of investment risk management that will cause investment professionals to reexamine the underlying assumptions and foundation of Modern Portfolio Theory. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars JP from Oregon
Finally someone willing to write an honest analysis of the self-serving behavior of the financial industry. Anyone invested in the market who reads this book will strongly reexamine their beliefs with regard to investing. Undoubtably many in the financial services industry will hope that this book does not get read. I for one, hope that it becomes a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, some answers!
This book is one of a kind! It is the first book I've read that speaks the truth about the perils of investing in the stock market. The suggestions are clear, sensible and a must for anyone who isn't buying into the old worn out advice that no longer works in todays environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is another way...
Finally, a book that speaks to concerns that I've had about investing since I read my first investment book but that no one seems to talk about.

The author covers topics that are taboo in most investment texts, such as how the investment industry is rigged against the individual investor (corporate structure, taxes, investment banks, government regulation, etc.), and what you can do to protect yourself from market risk. Diversification doesn't help when the whole market collapses after a catastrophic event like 9-11 or in a deep recession.

If you want to take advantage of up markets and hold onto your gains in down markets, then read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cutting edge, no-holds-barred financial guide
Knowledgeably written by Edward Winslow (the Founder and Manager of First American Financial Cooperative), Blind Faith: Our Misplaced Trust In The Stock Market And Smarter, Safer Ways To Invest denounces "playing the stock market" as being little better than gambling, and presents wiser, safer, more effective means to invest and put money to work. From why ordinary Americans should steer clear of stocks; to intelligent risk management strategies; to protected investments and means geared for retirement, and more, Blind Faith a cutting edge, no-holds-barred financial guide which is especially relevant in light of recent economic pitfalls, Wall Street volatility, and dramatic stock-related corporate scandals.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Proof is in the Pudding
The proof is in the pudding. How many of us (the small investor) have actually made returns equal to the SP 500 index in up markets, and haven't lost their shirts in the down markets? In this book you'll learn why, and how the financial industry encourages us to be blind sheep. Mr. Winslow explodes the conventional investing dogma and shows us a better way. ... Read more

The information in How to File for Bankruptcy is so complete that a person can file virtually on his own, without needing to hire a lawyer. All of the necessary forms are included, complete with explicit directions. Like all Nolo Press titles, this is a straightforward, no-nonsense book of useful advice and specific guidance, written in clear, easy-to-understand language. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better
- only 16 states allow residents to use Federal exemptions (including Michigan) so they only provide a few measly examples for state exemptions, so if you live in one of the 16 states that allow residents to use Federal exemptions don't expect much from this book
- book repeats instructions already on forms over and over; could have eliminated 100 pages at least if they just said follow instructions on forms
- if you've read forms, read "Bankruptcy Basics" flyer at Federal website and gotten few few consultations you can skip this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good but look closely.
A useful guide, as far as I can tell, professional and concise.A possible caution however. The most recent edition as of Nov. '04 is the 11th edition, 2004. I would suggest that you not buy a used copy unless the seller specifies the edition or the publication date. This may not matter very much. Note that the most recent Gilbert bankruptcy law guide and the most recent Nutshell bankruptcy law guide are both 2002 (as far as I can tell). If you're serious about looking into this, you might as well have the sharpest tools you can find.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved me attorney's fees! Worth its weight in gold
I can't say enough wonderful things about this book!

6 months ago I was contemplating bankruptcy.I searched for a book to help me and decided to buy this one.Honestly, I figured I'd read it, be more confused than ever and have to hire an attorney.

That's NOT what happened.I took a weekend and studied every page of this book and took notes.I filled out and filed my bankruptcy petition on my own.Today, I attended my creditor's meeting. Now, in just 2 months, I'll receive my discharge. All WITHOUT a lawyer!

Filing bankruptcy without a lawyer is more time consuming, but the money saved is worth it.Just take your time and study this book and you'll be fine.

Thank you, Nolo.Buying this book was the best thing I've done this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Follow Big Money Saver
I recently filed for bankruptcy using the book How to File a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. It told me where to file, what schedules to file, how to fill them out, what fees I would have to pay. By doing this, I saved myself over a $1000 that a lawyer quoted me if he were going to do it for me. Though meticulous and a bit detailed, the book is not hard to read. So, if you too want to file your bankruptcy yourself and save yourself a $1000, buy this book! I filed, paid my fees, attended the 5 minute bankruptcy hearing myself--all without any problem. It was a breeze!

4-0 out of 5 stars Watch out for mathematical errors
Great book on investing. The book covers information you would normally have to search in many places for.
There are errors in the perpetuity formula on page 150 and the multiple used for discounting on page 144 should be 1.1449 no 1.449.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
The best investing principles, as clearly reiterated here, are stable and evergreen. As an investor, you'll welcome author Pat Dorsey's unambiguous, straightforward presentation of the always valid wisdom of the markets. This conveniently organized book offers several chapters of general relevance to investors in all markets and industries, including an industry-by-industry examination of the determinants of value. The title is cute, but the content isn't about the title's rules - it is about learning and obeying the basics of stock investing. We recommend the author's long term perspective. Many of the directions he sets for potential investments could still be valid years hence.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handles an intimidating subject artfully
There are many books on financial statement analysis, and I've bought most of them...being a liberal arts major who is working toward an MBA in Finance, I've found mastering ratios and concepts related to reading company annual reports frustrating and challeging: my brain seemed not to be wired to be competent in this subject matter. However, I find Pat Dorsey's treatment effective in that he uses the concepts in a less intimidating context than other books might, without watering down the content. Can someone read this book and decipher GE's annual statement to the last footnote? Not hardly. It is often said that it's knowing the essential 20% of a subject that is responsible for 80% of one's success, and this book fills this role in understanding that 20%. Further, the chapters breaking out how to modify analyis of different sectors and industries in the market is also helpful to avoid comparing apples to oranges when evaluating stocks and companies. Beyond this book, the next step up from this would be "Analysis for Financial Management" by Higgins.

4-0 out of 5 stars WHY allow book reviews by those who don't read the book?!
I was utterly appalled by the sheer stupidity of the book review submitted by 'amodeus1791 from New York City'(28Jan04) - who claims he never read the book, but then he submits a self-admitted ignorant review of this book. I was even more appalled that Amazon allows "non-review" book reviews to be submitted!! Evidently, 'amodeus1791 from New York City' is a terribly un-read, unsophiticated, myopic, arrogant person who is abundantly ignorant of history also. Clearly, 'amodeus1791 from New York City' is the epitome of an example for that insightful maxim "Living is easy with eyes closed - it's understanding all you see."

So-called amateurs have made incredible contributions to knowledge in a variety of technologies and sciences in the ecourse of human history. And so-called amateurs have also made incredible millions in the stock market too. It is precisely the discerning amateur eye that has broken ill-fated innummerable mindsets throughout history time and time again. Why? Simply because so-called 'amateurs' aren't afflicted with myopic blinders - or blindfolds as in the case of 'amodeus1791 from New York City'. (You also have to question whether or not a respected research company such as Morningstar would really publish a true & pure 'amateur' on such a subject?)

My first recommendation is that all Amazon readers trash ignorant garbage that is spewed off so indiscriminately like that from 'amodeus1791 from New York City'. I also recommend that Amazon refuse to allow "non-review" book reviews to be published on Amazon!!

Actually, if you are looking for a variety of perspectives on a very complicated subject that is part science, part gambling, part intuition, and part art - then this book is as good as any other "random walk" before graduating on to the Benjamin Grahams and John Murphys of the world. It is well written, well researched, well organized, and well thought out -- unlike 'amodeus1791 from New York City'.

And for that matter - don't place any faith in my review either -just read the book if you are a semi-serious student of the subject. Because if you are a semi-serious student of the subject you'll want a variety of input - and you'll know how to make up your own mind as to what market perspectives suit your style of investing.

And by reading the book - you'll know infinitely more about it than 'amodeus1791 from New York City' does!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Source of Sector Accounting
This book does two things well. First, Mr. Dorsey spends time to walk the reader though the "firm value concept" of intrinsic valuation methodolgy. What is important is his summation points that there is no such thing as an exactly correct discounting rate. So, based on that comment, you should begin to question the whole process. I have wrestled with this question for decades and I can attest that just because "I" think the equity is worth x$ there is no way that the market has to agree with me, or Mr. Dorsey. The math exercise is good to learn and understand but it is not a guaranteed way to stock market riches. A point of contention, Mr. Dorsey's methodology elects not to reduce his equity valuation by the amount of long-term debt per share. Many others do, so, leave yourself a big margin of safety.

The other value of this book is its second half which is devoted to better understanding the various accounting differences among industry sectors. I welcomed the discussion on operating lease commitments as an off-balance sheet debt obligation. I think what you will find when you crunch the numbers is, most companies are very indebted. The concept of "Enterprise Value" and "Cash Return" is also useful but, it also won't make the market move your way.

In summary, a good read with something to teach but certainly it does not make this market speculation look like "investment". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Content, but Overlong
I have no criticism over the content of this brilliant book. It is a book that should be read in conjunction with Wallace D Wattles book, The Science of Getting Rich, and The Silva Method. The 3 books complement each other brilliantly.

The book is a blue print, of how to use and what to say to your subconcious mind, to bring wealth into your life. The book is littered with real life examples of people using the authors affirmation techniques to great effect, counterbalancing any skepticism about affirmation techniques.

Maybe a better title, that sums this book up more succinctly could be, How to use the Power of Your Subconcious Mind To Create Riches.

So the book is about mental focus and how to use affirmations to materialise wealth by creating a prosperity conciousness. This is done by remodelling the content of the subconcious mind.

The only criticism I have of this book is that after 4 chapters the reader has got the idea, behind the concept, but the author keeps going for another 11 chapters. I am not saying that the other 11 chapters are a waste of time, they are not, but I feel the content could have been condensed into less space.

It does get a little boring towards the end. This can be forgiven, because it is the results that will come from reading this book, that are important thing to bear in mind.

If the reader applies the content of this book, with the faith that The Science of Getting Rich will instill, and the conceptual nature of subconcious mind control as covered in The Silva Method, the reader will reap incredible results from this mini course in getting rich.

Recomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Are Powerful
After I read The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by this author, I realized that I had gotten ahold of something worthwhile. Murphy expresses principles of believing in yourself in a way that most people can grasp and use. He does not talk in circles or make anything mysterious. His book Your Infinite Power to be Rich is fairly short and very specific to people who are struggling financially. Even highly productive people can face financial problems. I'm sure you've heard that your attitude can make a big difference in your life, but so can your imagination. Readers who think Murphy is advocating thought alone do not understand that your thoughts can lead you to specific, intelligent actions. We are all much more intelligent than we think we are, and Murphy helps us realize this. Everything in this book will enrich and enhance your life. You, the reader, have the power to recognize this and use your mind. 5-0 out of 5 stars Bless Anyone Who Has Wronged You
Because "Think Yourself Rich," another book by this author, doesn't have an option to review, I'm using this other book, to express how powerful Joseph Murphy's lessons are.

On the first page, he say's, "You are here to express the fullness of life every day." This is a very powerful statement. And one that leads all readers to say, "Okay, that's true. And how do I do that?"

In asking your subconscious mind how to do this, you will create a mental movie of yourself expressing the fullness of your life. And you will find yourself, as I have found myself focused upon possibilities, instead of what I call, "brain freeze."

Reading Joseph Murphy's books will lead you to develop yourself on 5 levels: financially, socially, intellectually, spiritually, and mentally. You can't help but to become more prosperous.

A small example of how I have benefited from the lessons in this book was something that I experienced, just last week.

I had been commissioned by a family who had inherited a ranch, to write an article for the local papers, which would not only benefit the family who inherited this ranch, but also the people who I interviewed.

At first, I went into brain freeze, telling myself, "Boy! This really isn't journalism. It's major sucking up."

Then, the night before it was due in to be presented to my clients, as I read more from "Think Yourself Rich," I decided to "sleep on all that I could write, for the benefit of everyone."

I woke up writing a story that has touched everyone's life, while everyone involved has already prospered, in every sense of the meaning.

Read Joseph Murphy's books, because, your life is a gift to you. "You are here to express life and to release your hidden talents to the world."

2-0 out of 5 stars If these "think and grow rich"..
If these authors really believed that you could "think" and grow rich, they would include a money back guarantee on the sale of their book. Even better, they could give the book out free and have you pay only if their techniques worked. Murphy has written a few good "new Thought" books, but this is silly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read book
I have read the book and have benefited from it. At first I was skeptical but I have been diligently doing what the author recommends and my finances have improved tremendously. Having been the first book Iv read by Joseph Murphy, I was surprised by the author's approach (I was not aware of his background.) With that being said I encourage everyone to read this book and I look forward to reading his other titles. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OWN YOUR OWN CORPORATION by GARRETT SUTTON
As a owner of various companies, I look for books that will provide insight on limiting liabilities while maximizing profits. The author has suceeded with this book because it's written with a straight forward approach that breaks down difficult corporate terms into terms that anyone can understand. This was achieved by showing examples of certain situations and unknown facts that can happen to any individual or company.

I really like how the book explains all aspects of different types of corporations to establish depending on each individuals goal to keep their company private or go public. At the same time, the book teaches you various ways to protect your personal assets from your business assets. Just this section alone will eventually save you thousands in personal asset protection.

Most importantly, I've read hundreds of books about corporations, asset protection, public or private, etc. with the majority being very boring with fancy terms that's hard to understand. This book was so enjoyable with simple terms and exciting case situations, I read the entire book without putting it down. I'm now re-reading it and underlining many facts that will be shared with my corporate paid professionals on various situations that my company needs to be protected against. I had no idea but thanks to your book, I do now.

Finally, This book is a "MUST" read for anyone starting a corporation and a "MANDATORY" read for any owner of an existing corporation.

Thanks to the author, Garrett Sutton, I'm now working smarter, counting more net profit and sleeping comfortably in my personally protected home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for those in the B-Quadrant (or want to be)
Having a business without being incorporated is like driving a car without insurance. I was confused about corporations, which kind and didn't want to go to a "expert" untill I understood how the process works. This book did just that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Groovy Corporate Info
Easy to read. I formed a C corporation with Mr. Sutton's firm after reading this book. They took care of all that legal mumbo jumbo so I could focus on building my business.

I was trapped in big corporations for 20 years - this book helped me understand how to get started...and the "right way" to protect my assets as an entrepreneur.

I only have time to read 2-3 business books a year. I'm glad this was one of them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Definitely NOT for the laypers
