5-0 out of 5 stars I'M IMPRESSED!
Suze Orman definitely knows her stuff. When it comes to financial awareness, I have slept through 40 years, and made countless mistakes, as have untold millions of Americans. I completely agree with Suze when she states that it truly does take "Courage to Be Rich". It requires planning, budgeting, understanding, and total willingness to change from living from paycheck to paycheck, wondering when everything's going to get better. But, it won't get better, unless you and I make a change, and improve our lives. The middle of this book got a little dry when it got into the meat of the issue, eg. stocks, bonds, mutual funds, IRAs, Roth IRAs, etc., however, she explained those various investments very well. I'm just beginning to make up for a lot of wasted time, and this book was very enlightening to me. If any other books explain the subject as good or better than this one, please let me know. One inherent problem with a book like this is that after a few years some of the concepts will have changed, but the basics will always apply.

5-0 out of 5 stars DEVELOP THE COURAGE, MOVE YOUR STALLS ASIDE!
This latest book by Suze Orman continues her wonderful advice combining how to feel positive about making and collecting lots of money with simple "how to" investment advice about things like the common mortgage and retirement plan. This book is especially good for people who have unique problems and need basic financial advice. Her greatest contribution is to make people realize that on an emotional level, it is okay to want to be rich and her exercises help us develop THE COURAGE TO BE RICH. It is not as easy as it sounds. The psychological side of us keeps putting up "stalls" to succeeding. We need to ask ourselves some tough questions to deal with how we feel, what needs to be done and to develop solutions that make us and everyone else better off. I recommend THE 2,000 PERCENT SOLUTION if you are interested in identifying your own "stalls" and want to start asking some of the tough questions. You will start to succeed in many new ways and at a much faster rate. Read both books to become so much more effective and develop the courage to accept the good things that come your way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner by Suze!
When it comes to personal finance, no one is better than Suze Orman.

This book goes a lot deeper into personal finance tha her previous books.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very, very, very good book. Thanks Suze
I have read several other books by female financial authors. And found those 1,000 page fluff filled books about as useful for financial knowledge as a used piece of toilet paper.

Suze is the best. She is passionate about personal finance and goes beyond just offering financial advice. Not just marketing, although her books and other products certaintly outsell that NY female magazine writer by about 1000 to 1. Suze's books sell only because she has something to say.

The Courage To Be Rich is by far one of Suze's best works to date. She really get's down and deep into the mental aspects of money and why your attitude directly affects your financial situation.

Some of what Suze writes here is similiar to 9 Steps to Financial Freedom, Suze's best book in my opinion and I like The Courage To Be Rich better than The Road to Wealth which is also excellent and probably appeals more to those analytical types who enjoy that NY female writer with the 1,000 page book full of fluff. The Road to wealth, is not fluff...it is powerful information.

None the less, I still like The Courage To Be Rich even better. More hard hitting. More results oriented.

Great book Suze. We love ya!

1-0 out of 5 stars The Courage To Be Rich
I found this book very annoying. I wanted a financial help book and got a religious discussion of everything. I do wish that business and religion could be kept separate. If I wanted religion I would look for a religious book. She would be more helpful if she kept to the financial facts and let the reader deal with their own spirituality. I am sorry I wasted money on it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Plan for Miracles
The 40-day Prosperity Plan has completely changed my life. I am now on my 4th round and I am constantly experiencing miraculous abundant changes and events in my life. When I started this program in February of 2004, I was skeptical. However, I persevered, and just before the first round 40-day period ended, I got a new job that is extremely creative and pays well. During the second round, I contracted to build a house, which, before I began this program, I'm sure would never have been impossible. It was as if the pieces of the puzzle all fell into place....as if the universe was orchestrating everything to perfectly arrange for this to occur.During my third round, I got a refund for a used car that was a lemon-- one that I purchased from a dishonest car dealer 8 months ago. This was truly miraculous because, at first, the owner of the dealership lied and told me he would refund my money, only to deny that he had said that. I meditated on the Source within for several days and eventually I was effortlessly led to people who advocated on my behalf. Finally he relented, refunded me all of the money I put down on the car and all of the payments I had made over the past 8 months. Then I turned around and purchased a new car for less money down and a lower monthly payment. So,once again, the universe orchestrated all of the "details" effortlessly. The most important lesson that I have learned doing this plan, is perhaps that not only can I acquire material things, but that by constantly acknowledging the Power within to solve my problems, I can have true peace of mind. I highly recommend this plan for anyone who is disciplined and committed to changing his or her life and realizing a powerful relationship with God. It REALLY works.

5-0 out of 5 stars STREAMS OF BLESSINGS
This tape deserves 7 stars because it is so very effective. The first part consists of John Price talking about money and your attitude to it, explaining some basic concepts and blowing away the error-thought one often has about money and prosperity in general. He then explains how to use the statements that follow over a 40-day period: there are 10 statements to be used in succession and repeated for four 10-day periods, in other words, one statement per day. This statement for the day can be written down, repeated and meditated upon. The gist of it is that God/The Infinite Spirit IS abundance and wishes to express itself as abundance through the individual. If one has no metaphysical knowledge, the statements might appear strange at first but there's no denying that they work. Following the statements there is a meditation that incorporates the complete message of the statements and finally some more points to ease the flow of abundance into your life (e.g. by cultivating an attitude of giving). Price has a very engaging and reassuring voice that ensures a very pleasant listening experience every time. If you experience any type of lack in your life, follow this program and you'll be amazed by the results. Do not allow your own doubt, worry or cynicism to dismiss this great blessing -- whether you believe it or not, it will work. Sooner or later, depending on the state of your consciousness when you start the program. And best of all, the result is not restricted to money but encompasses abundance in all areas of your life. I sincerely wish that all people who currently experience lack may discover this tape and reap the rich harvest of blessings. God bless you all.

Book Description

Let's face it: You don't know half as much as you let on. Sure, you were able to skate through college based on a decent work ethic and the ability to use words like "postmodernity" in appropriate situations. Also, you had good hair. And maybe you're still afloat after a couple years on the job, despite having just recently discovered that a 401(k) is not quite the same as the 4-1-1, yo. But now life is catching up with you. You're realizing that last night's pizza is probably not the healthiest breakfast food. That romantic relationships are hard. And that credit cards can be trouble.

So basically you've got two choices. Option A: You ride this seat-of-your-pants thing as long as possible until you lose your pants altogether. Good luck with that. Wear clean underwear.

Or Option B: Buy this book. It's helpfully titled Things You Should Know by Now: A Mini-Life Manual for the Quarterly Aged. Inside you'll find a collection of tips, suggestions, step-by-step outlines and self-important asides from twentysomething author Jason Boyett, all intended to help you navigate the choppy waters of love, work, money and healthy living. It's entertaining! It's occasionally insightful! And there's a chapter on How to Cook Eggs! Things You Should Know by Now is, in fact, the instruction manual on how to live and actually enjoy life, and that's not just back-of-the-book boasting. OK, it is, but still... you need to read this. 2-0 out of 5 stars NOT the best bang for your buck.
I bought this book as a novice in the rental business hoping to find information that would get me started out on the right foot. I WAS QUITE DISAPPOINTED. I will not go as far as to say that this book is worthless; there are some useful tidbits of information that i found helpful, but there are other books out there that are so much better. I strongly suggest LANDLORDING, by Leigh Robinson (Ninth Edition or newer). It's available on amazon, of course.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Information For The USA
On reading this book no matter how much I tried to focus I found myself wondering whether the content actually related to my own situation in the Uk.

I purchased the book looking for straightforward advice on being a landlord covering aspects such as legal implications, inventory advice etc. However from the information I read on site it was not clear that this was very much a book for those in the USA. Once I started reading it soon became apparent when it spoke of the different laws for different "states", forms with "zip codes" etc. Whilst the general information was useful I felt that I couldn't rely on any document or legal advice as this might not hold for the UK.

A good read but I felt that it should have been highlighted on the site that it was for the USA

5-0 out of 5 stars I use this book in my Rental Property Management Class
As a landlord for over 30 years and teaching classes on the subject in two different schools, this is one book that I have found invaluable as a resource for wannabe and experienced landlords. Don't think you know it all no matter what you read, learn, experience... I'm still picking up tips and hints! Much of my curriculum was already covered in this book but still there was more to use and learning from each other is the way to go! Very happy to see this book on the market and in laymen's terms and with the prominent hints and smiles to make it easy reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A-Z Information on how to manage rental property
This book is a must read if you plan to manage rental units.

4-0 out of 5 stars I once was lost, but now am found...
There was a point in my life that I was lost as to what to do or, more importantly, not to do, but with this book under my belt, I know feel like Super Landlord. Book Description

Advance praise for this groundbreaking look at Security Analysis on Wall Street

"Mr. Hooke does an admirable job of stripping away the wrapping paper to reveal the fundamentals of analyzing companies and their stocks and bonds that are traded in the public marketplace." —Samuel L. Hayes III Jacob H. Schiff Professor of Investment Banking Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration

"Jeffrey Hooke has provided a comprehensive and readable explanation of the issues involved in determining company valuations. This book should become required reading for analysts and investment managers." —Steven W. Golann Director Mercury Asset Management International Ltd.

"One of the toughest issues facing an investment professional is valuation. Jeffrey Hooke in his book Security Analysis on Wall Street deals with this issue in a comprehensive manner by providing not only a framework to evaluate the dynamics that determine value, but also tools that can be put to practical use. I consider this book a serious contribution to the art of valuation." —George Konomos Investment Manager Cambridge Capital Fund, LP Praise for M & A: A practical Guide to Doing the Deal

"Jeffrey Hooke has done a fine job of explaining the 'ins and outs' of a very complex business. He knows what he's talking about." —John C. Whitehead former co-Chairman Goldman, Sachs & Co.

The principles of investing have always been simple: buy low, sell high. The investor who can find the right stocks to buy at the right time will reap the rewards, but the information needed to make these potentially lucrative decisions is often difficult to come by, then hard to decipher, and rely on.

This authoritative new book shows that rational, rigorous analysis is still the most successful way to evaluate securities. It picks up where Graham and Dodd's bestselling Security Analysis —for decades considered the definitive word on the subject —leaves off. Providing a practical, up-to-the-minute view, Security Analysis on Wall Street shows how the values of common stocks are really determined in today's marketplace.

Proper stock valuation is one of the most challenging tasks in finance, and it has been the subject of continual discussion and debate over the years. As Hooke points out, "Theories abound on the appropriate methodology for establishing valuation, ranging from the quasi-scientific discipline of the 'intrinsic value' believer to the emotional ravings of the anticipation investor. . . . The market price of any stock thus represents a jumble of contradictory expectations and hypotheses, influenced constantly by investors processing new data and evaluating changing circumstances."

Rising above the "jumble," security analysis dictates that the selection of specific stocks for purchase or sale should be based on a rational analysis of investment values. Applied over the long term, in a disciplined manner, this method can produce superior results. Security Analysis on Wall Street takes a revealing look at the complete security evaluation process and its complex inner workings, as well as the major valuation techniques currently being used by Wall Street professionals.

Beginning with an overview of the environment in which stocks are issued, researched, bought, and sold, Hooke examines the roles of the various players, the rules of the markets, and the activities surrounding initial public offerings. He then probes the intricacies of analyzing and reporting on securities with proven methods for evaluating the merits of a stock. This sophisticated yet straightforward system enables the investor to assess profitable firms, as well as marginal performers, leveraged buyouts, and corporate takeovers, and —most importantly —to break down different analyses and get the big answers: Is the security fairly valued, and if not, should it be a "buy" or a "sell"?

Incorporating dozens of real-world examples, and spotlighting special analysis cases —including cash flow stocks, unusual industries, and distressed securities —this comprehensive resource delivers all the answers to your questions about security analysis on Wall Street. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooke's book is a good practical guide
Hooke's book was a fine overall review of how Wall Street pros evaluate common stocks. He showed many examples of actual firms, and he supplies a lot of anecdotes. The book reads pretty well, and it covers a good variety of industries, including hi-tech, distressed companies and emerging markets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific summary of how to value a stock!
The book is a terrific summary of how to value a stock. It gives a step by step outline of the process for a variety of stock categories. For example, you can value a manufacturing company with one technique, while savings and loans stocks and hi tech stocks , for example, require other methods. The book explains how all these different industries are handled.

The first five chapters really gave me the insiders view of how Wall Street operates, and how it prices IPO's, for example. The author, Jeffrey Hooke, worked on Wall Street a lot, and he doesn't pull any punches. Many things that go on are only semi-honest and he isn't afraid to reveal the dark underbelly of the securities business. I really liked the way he showed how many firms exaggerate their sales and earnings per share. You nevre see this sort of thing in other books.

Just by following his advice on pricing stocks on a relative value basis saved me about $3,000 on a recent trade. I recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very resourceful from a broad persperctive
I would recommend this book to someone who wants a broad exposure of "Security Analysis on Wall Street." Mr. Hooke gives a great overview of the many facets of securities analysis. The drawback of this book is that it lacks specifics. For example, I was interested in getting a deeper analysis of valuation methodologies, however, what I found was a general overview of this section--the author then jumped right on to the next section. This example relates to all of the topic areas. Going deeper into topic areas so that more educated and experienced readers could get insight was not available for the most part. Nevertheless, I rate this book 4 stars because it does a great job of giving a strong overview of security analysis. I would recommend this book, especially for beginners and intermediate students and practitioners.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For The Serious Investor
This book is the best I've ever read on stock valuation. It has helped me understand the fundamentals behind valuation. It is an easy read for those who have some background in finance but not impossible for the layman to understand.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good in a broad sense, not very in depth
My opinion, this book is good in a broad sense, but certainly not thatin depth. Comparing it to Graham and Doddville is streching. Sorry, I disagree. Of course, this is my opinion and other might have different opinion. ... Read more

The Energy of Money: A Spiritual Guide to Financial and Personal Fulfillment, by Maria Nemeth, Ph.D., outlines a distinctly unique approach to one of the most dominant yet forbidden topics in modern society: money, and how we deal with it. A clinical psychologist who once lost $35,000 in a fraudulent investment scheme, Nemeth learned from that ordeal (and similar experiences of friends and associates) how most of us develop relationships with money, and the ways in which we subsequently can bring these in line with our actual dreams and realities. She initially used this knowledge to start a workshop called You and Money, which eventually attracted more than 4,500 participants and led to the development of concepts now delineated in this book. Quoting relevant wisdom espoused by those ranging from Joseph Campbell and Ram Dass to Mark Twain and Dorothy Parker, Nemeth sets out "12 principles for personal fulfillment" designed to help readers "uncover the hidden landscape of beliefs, behavior patterns, and habits that underlie and sometimes subvert how you use money and other forms of energy." The result is a refreshing, useful, and surprisingly accessible mixture of universal financial advice and the much rarer--but no less important--ethereal side of fiscal self-management. --Howard Rothman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mind and soul approach to wealth
The Energy of Money is a brilliant explanation of the intuition and intellect behind wealth, prosperity, and abundance. If you believe that money represents energy, want a grounded approach, this book is for you. Knowing how to raise one's energy frequency to attract greater flows of money is easier said than done. Nemeth helps guide you to the process to increase flow. Try it and see if it works. If anything, you'll learn something new that you can use.

5-0 out of 5 stars compassionate, guilt-free approach
I am a millionaire, and every time I read a book about money, I feel guilty.I *know* I'm supposed to pay attention to money, but I don't, so I feel guilty when I'm reminded of what I "should" do and end up doing nothing. In contrast, this book opened with the author opening her heart. She is compassionate and understanding of the guilt.Somehow, just feeling accepted by her, I was moved after the first 15 pages to get up and take care of some money issues.I have continued to read the book and continue to take positive action.I also find her insights applicable to other "congealed energy," such as issues with food. This book is life-changing!

Taking a wholistic approach to shifting beliefs and outcomes around ones financial fulfillment, The Energy of Money differs from many other Spiritual Money guides because of the wealth of exercises and the completeness of its coverage.

Nemeth doesn't see money as a "stand alone" issue, she sees it as being a part of one's life intention and integrity.

Another feature that works is her taking the obstacles and problem areas and meeting them head-on rather than denying they exist. Its more of the "Name it and claim it" approach which works very well.... when the claiming involves taking congruent action, about which Nemeth also offers instruction.

Its an all around powerful read, one which I repeat and refer to frequently both for my own learning and for my life coaching clients as well since this is oftentimes a challenging area.

If you read it and put the information to use, you will definitely have a positive return on your investment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Get the book, not the audio program...
First, I ought to say that I purchased both the audio book (as a download) and the written book, hoping to find more material and exercises in the audio program and also with the desire to to be able to review the contents of the program at ease. This was not the case.As another reviewer commented, the presentation is VERY difficult to listen to as it is very monotone and downbeat.I don't think I could listen to the entire program again and I would definately NOT recommend buying the tapes or download.

That said, I found the contents of the book to be quite comprehensive and there are numerous practical exercises throughout the book to complete. The book has its foundations in a number of metaphysical (ie. money as energy), 'spiritual' (i.e. your life purpose and Buddhist concepts of 'structures of knowing' and 'monkey mind' among others) and psychological perspectives (including beliefs systems and blocks). In particular, it is about taking the hero's journey (ie. Joseph Campbell's work), that is, about creating the kind of life that you want and assisting you to clear the blocks in order to achieve this.It aims to get the reader look at themselves, what they really want in life and the internal changes they need to make in order to do this.

The book doesn't contain 'practical' money management strategies - that's not it's focus, it's focus is on the important inner dimension of success and fulfilment. The book is a worthwhile read and I think it's much, much better than many others on the market. The practical exercizes are also useful in enhancing self awareness and in that sense is worth the price of the book - I would definately purchase it again, I just wouldn't buy the audio version, unless you are having problems sleeping!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Material But Boring Speaker
I purchased "The Energy of Money: A Spiritual Guide to Financial Freedom and Personal Fulfillment", as an audio book. I was extremely excited to go over the material as I have done pretty extensive reading on spirituality as it relates to money and abundance and am always fascinated with any new twist I pick up on the subject. In that respect the book did give me what I was hoping for.

Especially interesting was the concept of "unfinished money business". The program really stops and makes you think about just how many money related issues may be hanging over your head. Issues like... are your insurance policies adequate? Do you prepare and follow a monthly budget? Is your car maintenance up to date? Is your checkbook balanced to the penny? The list is extensive and it really makes you want to get busy at doing those things you've been putting off.

The program is designed to make you look at your lifelong relationship with money... how you spend it, use it, abuse it and how you feel about it. Several guided exercises are designed to help you discover your deepest thoughts relating to money and how you can use that information to establish new, more meaningfulgoals.

My main problem with this program was the presentation. It is read by the author, Maria Nemeth, and I found her voice and reading of the material to be too slow, bland and boring. The quality of the material presented was the only thing that kept me awake! ... Read more

Book Description

A New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller!

Are you tired of the way you're living? Are you fed up with everyone trying to take your most valuable possessions--your money and assets--away? Are you sick of having creditors, the IRS, or a vindictive ex-spouse nipping at your heels? If only you could disappear without a trace...if only you could resurface in some exotic foreign place with a whole new identity and a brand-spanking new life.

And on the other side, how would you like to track down that ex (and his assets) who owes you money? Want to know his tricks?

For most people, this is just a fantasy. But it doesn't have to be. In Hide Your Assets and Disappear, one of the nation's top-ten-rated private investigators, Edmund J. Pankau, reveals all the tricks of his trade to show you how to hide it all or find someone who has. An experienced tracker who has worked for the government to recover missing assets, Pankau explains step-by-step how to successfully get away or find someone who has.

Filled with vivid real-life stories of both successes and failures as well as an Internet research guide, this invaluable guide outlines exactly what you should know before you go, including the ever-increasing difficulties you will face as the world becomes more tightly linked through electronic networks. Pankau shows you how to pay attention to prevent slip-ups that can give you away, from birthday phone calls to magazine subscriptions to an off-the-cuff comment to a stranger. He prepares you logistically and psychologically to successfully make the transition to your new life and new self in a new world, and gives you the best information on how to go, where to go, how to live, how to behave, and even who to become once you get there.

Should I keep my assets here or move them abroad? How do I create a new identity? How do I stay lost? Can I ever go back? How can I avoid anyone who might be looking for me? And how can I find someone who's disappeared on me? How do people fake their own deaths? What can the government do to catch a concealer? Pankau has the answer for all these questions and many more, and provides the tiny, often overlooked details that can make the difference between lounging on a tropical beach or ending up on the wrong side of the law.

Whether you're in search of a new life or someone who has hidden their assets and disappeared and left you in the lurch, listen to Edmund J. Pankau. With his unique, entertaining, eye-opening guide, he shows you how to go from victim to victor.

Thinking of disappearing without a trace? Want to find someone who has? Consider these questions...

Which is the better place to go, New Zealand or Panama?

How much cash you can legally take out of the country?

What are the hot spots the Customs Department targets as suspicious entrance points?

What is FinCEN and how can it ruin your plans?

Where is it better to keep money, the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, or Switzerland?

Should you seek out the expatriates in your new country or lay low?

What should you do if someone recognizes you in your new home?

What happens if you get sick abroad? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For What it's Worth
Pankau's book presents an overview on the subject of asset protection. It's not his mission to tell you every detail of how something is done. That's up to you to figure out. Overall it's a fun read and informative. The Offshore centers he discussed have changed over the years but the facts stand. You CAN protect your assets offshore IF you know how. It's not that difficult. Why so many readers seem to have it in for Mr. Pankau I can only guess. Perhaps it was his appearances on the Art Bell radio show or his confidence in himself as a private investigator. I don't know. But I do know his book is a decent introduction for those seeking answers. It will certainly start you thinking and doing some of your own investigation into the subject of asset protection. Read it and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don,t judge a book by its cover
This book has a much broader range of appeal to the comman person than the title indicates. Everyone is affected by the privacy issues discussed in the book. The terms "hide" and "disappear" should'nt scare anyone off. Mr.Pankau lays out invaluable information in the context of someone "vanishing without a trace", but most of it relates directly to all of us. After reading his book I'm much more aware of the value of my privacy, and the steps to take to protect it in the future. The section on "the best places disappear to" is valuable to anyone thinking of retiring in a foreign country, regardless of "criminal" issues. Numerous countries and areas are rated for livability followed by recommendations and warnings.Mr Pankau's credentials are solid. He is highly respected internationally as an author(two bestsellers), speaker and most impressively, one of the top private investigators in the country. This is a man who has built a solid business and reputation. I trust the advice in this book because I have considered the source. Enough said.

1-0 out of 5 stars CONTRADICTION
The Book Review at the top of the main page states that "Pankau explains step-by-step how to successfully get away or find someone who has." So . . . he does?

How oblivious does one have to be in order to miss the inherent contradiction here? If Pankau can instruct a person or entity in how to find someone who has "successfully" gotten away, then he has failed to show the other person how to successfully "get away." He cannot have it BOTH ways.

He cannot teach one person how to "successfully" find another person who has been taught how to "successfully" hide himself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Witty and thought provoking.............
This is not a how to book. I'm not sure there is enough time or paper to write a concise how to book on this subject. Just from my read I thought it far more complicated to sever all ties and disappear.

It was beyond informative on the intricacy of our goverments financial prowess and technical abilities to track each and everyone of us through the almighty dollar. It was pure scary.
It really brought home to me how much power our government has and how we the people have lost control of the goverment.

The book was filled with stories of hide out drop outs and stupid things criminals do. Very entertaining even if you get no help on your goal to disapear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
If you ever wondered leaving your home country and living in a new country, this book is for you. The author shows the most common pitfalls in trying to "disapear". If you are facing a big law suit from your ex-wife or whatever reason you may want to hide your assets and disapear, this book is for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" before you walk into a model home!
Our new house is nearly complete and we used the book to guide us through the entire process. The book is laid out logically and very well mirrored our experience. The most helpful information came from the chapters informing us of the missteps that can be made before construction even begins, especially from a legal standpoint. Even though we used a reputable builder, we still had several occasions where our sales person and the construction supervisor tried to pull "fast ones" on us.

You can tell the author knows his stuff. The real life examples of other people's mistakes clearly reinforce the reasoning behind the advice he offers.

The only thing lacking was illustrations, but they weren't really necessary. I thought the book served its purpose well and kept our builder honest. ... Read more

Book Description

From America's most trusted financial advisor comes a comprehensive guide to a new and utterly sane financial choice. In Die Broke, you'll learn that life is a game where the loser gives his money to Uncle Sam at the end. There are four steps to the process:

Quit Today

No, don't tell your boss to shove it...at least not out loud. But in your head accept that from this day on you're a free agent whose number one workplace priority is your personal bottom line.

Pay Cash

You should be as conscious of spending as you are of saving. Credit should be a rarely used tool for those few times (buying homes and cars) when paying cash is impossible.

Don't Retire

Your work life should be a journey up and down hills, rather than a climb up a sheer cliff that ends with a jump into the abyss.

Die Broke

It sounds terrifying, the one intolerable outcome to your financial life. And yet, in truth, dying broke might be your best option for a life without fear: fear of failure and privation now, fear of impoverishment in the long run. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Advice; Solid Financial Game Plan
"Die Broke" is far superior to many much more popular personal finance books. Author Pollan is pragmatic in steering individuals to avoid the "wage slave" trap the vast majority of us bungle our way into. Among many noteworthy observations, Pollan wisely points out how home ownership is not the near-guaranteed money maker it once was. This book is a perfect gift for the college graduate or someone in their mid-20s. Following Pollan's advice empowers someone to be responsive to the real world of declining living standards for most of us and practically no job security. I do feel one is better buying a 3-5 year old Japanese car and keeping it 10 years while Pollan recommends continously leasing new cars. This book is an overlooked gem that deserves the occasional re-reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book first before you read any other
Die Broke is an excellent book. Author Stephen M. Pollan takes a philosophical look at our concept of retirement--a concept created for another generation based on a different value system. The idea that we must retire at the age of 65, build wealth until we die, and leave a big inheritance for our children is one founded upon the needs of society during the industrial age. Pollan's idea is that now that we are in the information age, there is no need to retire until we want to. We also needn't wait until we die to help our children (long past their most needful times). By setting up proper cash-flow investments, we can live a good life, help our children, and keep ourselves financially secure until we die.

Many people, including myself, worry continually about how to raise the money needed to survive for thirty years after retirement. Pollan's ideas help us to break out of the outdated concepts that give us these feelings so that we can feel better about ourselves and our current financial state.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Bankruptcy Recovery
As baby boomers that lost it all and is in the process of rebuilding our life, we found this book to be very helpful. In addition, it points out the hardest lesson that we've learned - your employer is not loyal to you and you can't count on them to take care of you.

This book isn't going to make you wealthy, and that is not its intent. This information in this book, paired with info from Suze Orman, are powerful tools for protecting yourself from future crises.

It isn't always right on the money, but it offers food for thought and practical advice. You won't find any book that has all the answers - if that were true, we'd all be rich.

5-0 out of 5 stars Money talks...but all mine ever says is good-bye
"Die Broke" was an interesting read although not what I was looking for.

I got the broke part down years ago with out much effort. Now I just need to decide on how to best achieve the rest of the formula.

4-0 out of 5 stars Maybe more pertinent now than when published
When this book was first published about six years ago, many reviewers on Amazon.com really ripped it up. I'd be curious to see their opinions now that their impressive "retirement" portfolios are worth next to nothing and they're looking for work--that they can't find.

It's a fine philosophy, but it depends on who the reader is. Pollan isn't right about everything. For example, he claims that non-cash gifts aren't subject to gift tax. Not exactly. And his ideas about getting to know the manager of your bank branch personally are quaint at best. In my experience, bank branch managers last a few months at best. I also don't understand his recommendation to lease instead of buy cars; leases are generally design to rip people off.

But, that said, the idea of not retiring, of working so you can have a life, is right on. I suspect after the upheavals of the last few years, more people are likely to agree with him and see validity in his ideas.

HOWEVER, like so many of these books, it's essentially an interesting ten-page essay expanded into a book. If you think you're going to work at a job for 40 years, then spend a few years shuffling around the golf course waiting for death, buy it and read it. If that scenario strikes you as a dead-end fantasy, you're probably already with the program. ... Read more

Book Description

The #1 New York Times bestseller that started the phenomenal series is now available in this special Spanish language edition. While growing up, personal-finance author and lecturer Robert T. Kiyosaki had two paternal role models: one, his father, a well educated but fiscally poor man; and two, his best friend's father, an eighth-grade dropout who became a self-made multimillionaire. The lifelong monetary problems experienced by his "poor dad" pounded home the counterpoint communicated by his "rich dad," and Kiyosaki developed a unique economic perspective. In RICH DAD POOR DAD, he lays out his philosophy behind his relationship with money, sharing the secrets that allowed him to retire at 47. Among them, he addresses the myth that earning a high income is necessary to be rich, challenges the belief that a house is an asset, and explains what kids need to know about money for their future financial success. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Incorporating? If so, this is a wonderful text!
My annual salary grew steadily each year since graduating from college in 1994. However, there was hardly any money to pay off my credit card bills and forget about nice vacations or investing! I'd had enough. I heard of IT jobs that paid $50/hr. (or more). One day I had a conversation with an IT contractor with 7 years experience. This man had incorporated his own business and suggested that I did for the tax benefits. However, he was not very articulate as to EXACTLY what benefits there were to incorporating. I had to know. So I purchased Marty Kaplan's 3rd edition in late 1997. On May 20, 1998 I paid a law firm $300 to formally incorporate my very own company. I was instanly a President!(I still get a kick out of my title!) I have been contracting ever since. I think that I would have been contracting whether I purchased this book or not. However, Marty Kaplan's book provided a detailed comparsion between the different types of businesses. (i.e. sole proprietorship, partnership, Limited Liability Company, C-Corporations, & S-Corporations) Marty explained the financial realities, that precious few people understand. These truths showed me the pros and cons to each business model. All the financial decisions that I made were based on the information I gleened from this book. I assure you that I am infintely better off today than I would be if I were still at my 1998 job. But, what's more is that I'm better off today than I would be if I had contracted as a "W2 employee." (which is much easier in the beginning!) It was Marty's text that enlightened me! Also, Marty speaks plainly about being audited - "...it may happen and don't panic." Marty is completely ethical. His text simply shows readers how to prevent raising red flags.
