Book Description Material can be located several ways: The IMPRESS Table of Contents locates the chapter in which a particular pronouncement is discussed. The Index provides quick, accurate reference to needed information. The 2000 Miller GAAP Guide is written in clear, understandable language. Each pronouncement is discussed in a comprehensive format that makes it easy to understand and apply. Practical illustrations and examples demonstrate and clarify specific accounting principles. The Practice Pointers throughout this edition do just that: They point out in plain English how to apply the standards just discussed. Observations enrich the discussion by presenting interesting aspects of GAAP, such as conflicts with the authoritative literature. Although no attempt is made to resolve apparent errors and conflicts in the promulgated pronouncements, these items are brought to your attention. To facilitate research, the 2000 Miller GAAP Guide includes extensive codification references to pertinent paragraphs of the original pronouncements. The Disclosures Index contains many of the required and recommended disclosures currently in use. It was designed to assist the preparer, reviewer, or auditor of financial statements in determining whether the necessary and most current disclosures have been made. The Self-Study CPE Program divides the material in the 2000 Miller GAAP Guide into four separate modules for efficient and thorough study. Reviews (2)

This book is the best available complement to the free HTML documentation (which is available online, or on CD in many books, including this one). I like the latest version of the Welch book, with its vastly improved index, but I find the explanations to be a bit sparse. For example, I am an experienced programmer in several languages, but I still had a lot of questions about local scoping vis-a-vis namespaces after reading Welch and the docs. Flynt made this topic transparent, with diagrams and examples. I also liked his example of building a tree data structure, which demonstrated to me better than anything that Tcl is simply the wrong language for building trees. That brings me to what I dislike about this book. The code examples are sometimes too long. In my opinion, long code should be only on the CD, to save paper space. And as the book is shorter than Welch's latest, I think the space should not have been wasted. About 1/3 of the book is devoted to Tk, similar to Welch. I have no interest in Tk anymore, so that is all a waste for me. (If you ARE interested in Tk, Effective Tcl/Tk programming is a great source.) There is a fair amount of info on the C library, but I think that Ousterhout's old book is still the best place for that. However, Flynt provides great advice on practical ways of interfacing with C/C++ (SWIG, Starkits, Starpacks). He also details the pro and cons of various Tcl tools, some free. This sort of information goes out of date quickly. For example, the author already mentioned privately to a friend that "nagelfar" is now his own favorite syntax checker. But at the moment, most of his info is current. In short, this is the best book for Tcl developers. But please consider Lua as an alternative interfacing language.

The author had honestly and successfully delivered what one could grasp from the title: profiting by contrarion opinion (to be precise, bullish/bearish consensus) in futures markets. He explained why the futures market is a money game, why the minority always win, why conventional market wisdom (yeah, your analysts included) always fail...He did that so well. That's all I wanna say. ...

Book Description After 10 years with Procter & Gamble Co., where he became that company's first "master marketing inventor," he now runs the Eureka Ranch, a work-hard, play-hard haven where he helps companies create breakthrough ideas for new products and services. This work, in combination with his years of consulting and researching, led directly to Jump Start Your Business Brain, the best piece of good news for business owners to appear in the last ten years. Jump Start Your Business Brain is must-have information for business people everywhere, especially small business owners. Why? Because author Doug Hall is on a personal quest--a Robin Hood-like mission to translate the wisdom he's discovered researching top corporations into no-fail, practical tactics for small and medium sized businesses. Jump Start Your Business Brain is packed with hard-won insight as to what truly works in the marketplace. To make it accessible to all, Doug transforms this real-life market intelligence into six scientific laws that, when applied with diligence, can make any business overflow with good fortune. Readers will learn how to: * Increase sales by 10 to 50% by sharpening customer communications--not by spending additional money What makes this business book different from all the rest? Its laws of success are developed on scientific data and original research drawn from over 4,000 new products and services and over 6,000 front-line development groups. Even better, the purchase of this book also entitles the reader to conduct a Merwyn simulated test market on the probability of success for their own business plan/idea.Merwyn, the computer "brain trust" for all Doug's data and research, will run an Idea Scan (via a single-use password protected within the book--a $500 value) which will allow crucial analysis for their business. Finally, the promise of these scientific laws spring to life for the reader in dozens of small business success stories, including Village Pottery, Mo Hotta Mo Betta, College of Piping, Woolly Ware, Island Winds, Cavendish Figurines, Seasons in Thyme and Island Pewter. Every copy of Jump Start Your Business Brain provides customers with access to one FREE Merwin Idea Scan--a $500 value! Merwyn is a simulated test marketing system for business ideas. It allows test marketing of a new business, product, service or advertising idea before investing time and money in its execution. Marketplace data indicates that ideas selected to go to market are successful only 25% of the time.An 845-case validation found Merwyn to have a 70% to 90% accuracy picking winners--thus dramatically reducing business risk. Merwyn's accuracy comes from: 1) Modeling what customers "do" as opposed to what they "say," Reviews (33)
You're not a big-shot executive of a major well-funded corporation? Not a problem. Hall's specialty is helping small companies (97 percent of American companies earn less than $1 million in revenue in a year) achieve greatness. Yes, he works with large clients like Mattel, AT&T, Johnson & Johnson, Pepsi-Cola, Tyson Food Service, and John Hancock Insurance. The learning he gleans from them is then shared with smaller companies as Hall enjoys his role as a modern-day corporate Robin Hood. His readers are the beneficiaries of his knowledge, insight, and experience. If you've read marketing books, some of Hall's urgings will sound familiar. He's a self- admitted follower of marketing guru David Ogilvy. But, that's just the beginning. Hall will take you to the next level. Before I even finished the book, I was re-writing my firm's marketing messages. In the first part of the book, Hall delves into what he calls the Three Laws of Marketing Physics. You'll learn about Overt Benefit, Reason to Believe, and Dramatic Difference. The concepts presented will awaken your thinking and fuel your idea generator. This section is valuable for readers who need to understand the principles that underlie what Hall prescribes. The second section jumps into the nitty-gritty, exploring the Three Laws of Capitalist Creativity: Explore Stimuli, Leverage Diversity, and Face Fears. In addition to the inspiring flow of material in the chapters themselves, you'll find value in the frequently asked questions sections, the bibliography, and the index-which you'll probably use liberally as you convert the book from a good read to a powerful tool. Think you know a lot of this stuff already? Take the Quick Quiz at the start of the book and you'll discover there's more to learn. Doug Hall will be your teacher.
Did you buy one of the original Apple Ipods? All the PR and reviews got your expectations up - only to find out that they went cheap on the battery. It lasts about 3-minutes. Big disappointment. It was capable of so much more. Same with this book. I LOVED Hall's first book. Great breakthrough stuff. So when this one was released I got in the pre-publication line. I saved the book for a Saturday cross-country plane ride ready to savor. Had the highlighter all ready and - bummer. Couldn't believe it. It's the equivlant of "Eat plenty of vegetables, get plenty of sleep and brush your teeth every day." Mundane, sophormoric stuff to be associated with the name Doug Hall. Not at all in the same league as his first book - a masterpiece. This guy is so much better than this cute little book of lists. I'll buy his next one, pay money to go see him - but this isn't the Doug Hall of the first book.
So what's with all the glib five star reviews this book has received? Was I missing the point, was I reading a different book, or were there a few reviews planted by the publisher?

Book Description The Artist-Gallery Partnership provides artists and dealers with guidelines for sound business negotiations as well as ideas for resolving disputes. The revised edition contains a new chapter on state consignment legislation, and includes a sample of the Standard Art Consignment Agreement, an inventory sheet/receipt for artworks on consignment, and the texts of the art consignment laws enacted in more than thirty states. Reviews (2)
Let's face it: art is a business and if you are an artist or a gallery owner, you can't afford to be without this information. I use this book to maintain records; I check paperwork against it before visiting my accountant; I use its sample forms and agreements every time I get the place ready for a new exhibit; and I follow this book's advice with every sale and display we make. This book should be required reading for everyone who has anything to do with art consignment...
Most of the book focuses on reciting the state statutes. I would have liked more "juice" on navigating the minefield that can occur in artist/dealer relations. Of course, a contract should allow an artist to avoid such messes, but more examples of things going wrong even with contracts would have been useful. It is a good reference book if you are past the point of no return and need to know the legalities of your particular state so you can proceed accordingly. I found Tad Crawfords other books more useful. ... Read more | |

This manual is a valuable reference, which helps the reader to grasp an understanding of supply chain strategies using a how-to guide. The instructive chapters walk you through all the important aspects of successful management. Contains actual studies, which can be viewed as educational tools and how to apply them to achieve the best possible results. Overall, I highly recommend this book and I have already applied it in the optimization of our processes. Christopher Kutyla
As an executive with supply chain experience at Dell and in the global automotive industry, I was impressed with the comprehensive nature of this book. Especially insightful and helpful are the sections on designing supply chains for strategic advantage, the importance and impact of different financial costing methods, and a methodologies section which walks the reader through the supply chain improvement process from the prestudy/assessment phase through to implementation. Overall, if a supply chain practitioner is looking for one book on Supply Chain Mangement, this is the one.

While supervisors and low level manages are working better, the Sr. Staff is utilizing the author's tools in a micromanagement-fest. For example, the review process has become a long drawn out process that requires several hours a week for the employee to revise their personal "assignment sheet". At the end of every three months you then have the employee summarize all their previous tasks for time, issues, schedule, etc. The quarterly review takes about 2 weeks with several cycles of review and rewriting with Sr. Staff members. Every detail is gone over and over. It is not uncommon to loose a week of productivity. Read the book but maintain some common sense about how you apply the information.
I wish I had bought this book 2 years ago, when it first came out -- I could have avoided a lot of headaches.
There's a tremendous amount of information, and I find myself going back to review the material often, especially when a meeting or conversation goes badly. There is nothing here you can't find in other books, but it's all collected neatly under one cover, and the author presents the material in interesting ways that make it easier to absorb and put into practice. Definitely a worthwhile read!

Book Description "A how-to guide for corporate executives who want to get at the unrealized shareholder values trapped in public companies." New York Times THE #1 GUIDE TO CORPORATE VALUATION IS NOW BETTER THAN EVER! "The books clarity and comprehensive coverage make it one ofthe best practitioners guides to valuation." Financial Times "Should serve very well the professional manager who wants to do some serious thinking about what really does contribute value to his or her firm and why." The Journal of Finance "Valuation is like a Swiss army knife . . . you will be prepared for just about any contingency." Martin H. Dubilier, Chairman of the Board, Clayton & Dubilier, Inc. "This book on valuation represents fresh new thinking. The writing is clear and direct, combining the best academic principles with actual experience to arrive at value-increasing solutions." J. Fred Weston, cordner Professor of Money and Financial Markets, Graduate School of Management, UCLA Reviews (38)
The second two parts, which deal with actual valuation techniques, are very verbose, but lacking in organization and depth. This half assumes that you are already familiar with concepts such as WACC, Free Cash Flows, and other accounting and valuation terms. Although several valuation techniques are indeed discussed, by no means is the list comprehensive. Furthermore, no systematic approach to deriving or explaining the formulas is available, and often, terms not introduced earlier are used. On the positive side, however, the book makes easy reading and focuses on a more practical, rather than academic or theoretical, discussion of valuation. This book may not provide much value to a serious student of valuation. Furthermore, I do not believe it will make an ideal reference for the experienced professional either. At best, it will make a good second reference for a graduate level course in valuation.
In light of recent corporate shenanigans with off-balance sheet products, it is unforgiveable that this book doesn't address how lack of value can be disguised using off-balance sheet products. Total return swaps, an off-balance sheet financing tool, isn't discussed, and credit derivatives, another off-balance sheet tool aren't even discussed. For coverage of these topics and offshore vehicles, read "Credit Derivatives" by Tavakoli.
This book was the prescribed & provided reference in the Corporate Finance department I worked in but most of my colleagues and I purchased our own copies of Damodaran's text "Investment Valuation, Wiley, Aswath Damodaran", which is superior in breadth as well as logical description of valuation processes. ... Amazon.com Like the rest of the Fast Forward series, this book is designed to let the reader extract maximum information in minimum time. There is a strong use of graphics with tables, charts cross-heads, and bullet points. Important passages are flagged in bold and/or emblazoned with the words key concept. When you read it, you realize that there is nothing magical about project management, just the application of careful common sense. The book covers all the basic stuff like planning, time-tabling, quantity and price estimation, resource allocation, and scheduling. But it also acknowledges that there is inevitably a political dimension to every project, no matter how small. So it has important sections on how to ensure that all the stakeholders in the project are kept "on board" and the importance of communication. As Verzuh states in his introduction, "Every project participant from part-time team member to executive sponsor, becomes more effective once he or she understands the basics of project management." Really, this is a book about management that every manager should read, whether he or she has a project or not. --Alex Benady Reviews (36)
ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT THIS BOOK IS A GOD-SEND. Well-written, concise, easy to follow, with excellent practical examples. I've learned (and successfully applied) something from every paragraph!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in improving their grasp of project management concepts and the application of them. It is also a quick and easy read, with good graphic elements in the book.
This one by Verzuh described core project managment procedures but lacked many real-world examples of these procedures in action, other than cursory remarks about how some process helped some company. The book by Lewis was much more practical and seemed to be written from a person who had actually done lots of PM work rather than learned the theory and then wrote a book on it.

The sidebars that you will see throughout the book 'Words from the Wise' and 'Project Lingo' are extremely useful to read and get upto speed on the definitions and the tricks of the trade. The only limitation that I found is that the treatment on some of the topics isn't very complete. That is completely understandable as this isn't aimed at teaching advanced tricks of the trade to the seasoned project manager. For that, you need to refer to an advanced book like Harold Kerzner's 'Project Management - A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling, and Controlling'. Or keep up with the latest by attending seminars and workshops at your local chapter of the PMI (Project Management Institute...). Finally, keep in mind that there are situations in project management that are specific to the industry you are in and sometimes there is no right answer. But most other times, the knowledge in this book is extremely helpful. Overcome the fear of being caught with a book that has the word 'Idiot' in the title and exploit the knowledge that the book provides!
