Book Description

Hands-on guidance to help nonprofits through the tax filing maze

Forms 990 provide a wealth of financial and programmatic information to enable government regulators, funders, journalists, and the interested public to measure a nonprofit’s performance. A copy of the forms must be provided to anyone who asks; charities’ forms are now posted for public view on the Internet courtesy of Guidestar.org. These forms are the most widely used tools for evaluating tax-exempt organizations. Schools, health and welfare organizations, business leagues, civic associations, museums, parent groups, garden clubs, private foundations, and the myriad of other nonprofit organizations recognized under section 501 of the federal tax code must file this form annually. Clear, correct, and concise preparation of Forms 990-EZ, 990, 990-PF, and 990-T is important, not only as financial documents, but also as a means of communicating an organization’s mission and accomplishment to the public.

Demystifying the Forms 990 for financial professionals and nonprofessionals alike, this user-friendly handbook walks you through the federal tax compliance process to assure maintenance of tax-exempt status. Blazek is widely recognized for her ability to translate complicated concepts into understandable language and explain the why and how Forms 990 should be prepared. In this book, readers will find:

  • Comprehensive, fill-in forms with line-by-line instructions including a synopsis of applicable tax issues
  • Explanation of consequences of answers that can have several consequences
  • Suggestions for dealing with the IRS as an organization grows and changes
  • Ways to maximize deductions in calculating tax due on unrelated business income
  • Tips for successful navigation of the interactive parts of Form 990-PF and reducing excise tax

4-0 out of 5 stars It's boring, but then, so is air and water
It's hardly the most sexy book I've reviewed, but it may be among the most useful if you are involved with a US nonprofit organization, or know someone who is. 990 Handbook is a line-by-line approach to the annual IRS Form 990.

Written by Jody Blazek, the book is a self-contained soup-to-nuts guide to completing these annual forms correctly.

Blazek accomplishes what she set out to do, as stated in the book's Preface: "My goal for this handbook is to demystify the Forms 990 for financial professionals and nonprofessionals alike - to make it easy for a nonprofit organization to achieve the best possible presentation of their financial activity and mission accomplishments for all to see."

As a lawyer who focuses on the law of tax-exempt organizations, one of my least favorite tasks is to prepare these annual forms. This handbook just made my life easier, and likely will result in a better result for my clients. ... Read more

Book Description

A great deal of economics is about law - the functioning of markets, property rights and their enforcement, financial obligations, and so forth - yet these legal aspects are almost never addressed in the academic study of economics. Conversely, the study and practice of law entails a significant understanding of economics, yet the drafting and administration of laws often ignore economic principle.

The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law is uniquely placed by the quality, breadth and depth of its coverage to address this need for building bridges. Drawn from the ranks of academics, professional lawyers, and economists in eight countries, the 340 contributors include world experts in their fields. Among them are Nobel laureates in economics and eminent legal scholars.

First published in 1998 and now available in paperback for the first time, The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law has established itself as a classic reference work in this important field.

4-0 out of 5 stars New Patterns
Interesting new patterns to add to your trading arsenal. The workbook runs thru examples for you to calculate and set up to learn the details of the method. Unfortunately, the stocks don't always behave as simple patterns, so it is still a risk. If you trade counter-trend, this has specific tricks for you.

Can't say methodology has made significant profits to justify the workbook, book, data feed, computer and analysis, but this is a work in progress. OTOH I would continue the data feed, computer and analysis anyway to look for my favorite spot plays anyway, so really this is still undergoing test trials.

Book Description

Customer satisfaction is the single most important issue affecting organizational survival. Despite this fact, most companies have no clue what their customers really think. They operate in a state of ignorant bliss, believing that if their customers were anything less than 100-percent satisfied they'd hear about it. Then they are shocked when their customer base erodes and their existence is threatened.

The key to competitive advantage is proactively gauging customer perceptions and aggressively acting on the findings. The techniques for doing this don't have to be difficult, they just have to be timely and effective. This book explores a range of practical techniques for probing your customers' true level of satisfaction. Tools and specific instructions for use are described in detail, enabling the organization to get started immediately. The tools range from very basic to highly sophisticated, providing a path for organizations to follow as they progressively become more familiar with the unique drivers of customer satisfaction. This is the perfect reference for organizations that want to continually improve and outpace their competition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Will rapidly translate to an improved bottom line
Strongly recommended reading, Customer Satisfaction: Tools, Techniques, And Formulas For Success by Craig Cochran (Project Manager, Center for International Standards & Quality, Georgia Tech Economic Development Institute) is a slim, 93-page compilation of observations, advice, and techniques for proactively gauging customer perceptions and then aggressively acting on the findings thereby acquiring a competitive advantage in today crowded and rapidly evolving markets. Tools and specific instructions are laid out in a thoroughly "user friendly" manner and range from the very basic to the rather sophisticated. Informed and informative, Customer Satisfaction is one of those easily assimilated compilations that will rapidly translate to an improved bottom line regardless of the nature of a businesses products or services.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth getting
There were three things I really liked about this book: 1) Every page had something of value on it. There's no filler. I never found myself turning a page and asking, 'what the heck did I just read?' 2) The customer satisfaction concepts were presented in the most simple manner possible. Anybody at any level of a company can understand and use the book. Right now, my V.P. of Operations and one of my 18 year old co-op students are reading it, and they're both getting some good ideas. 3) The book includes a wide range of tools, along with instructions on how to use and how not to use each one.

In summary, this is a good, practical book you can start using before you're even done reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very practical guide to improving customer satisfaction
If you're looking for a bunch of heavy, theoretical philosophizing on customer satisfaction, then you'll hate this book. If you're looking for practical, common-sense methods for understanding what customers think and doing something about it, then you'll love it. I found this book to be the most clear and concise guide yet for actually doing something to improve customer satisfaction. My company has already begun using two of the methods, with very good results. Highly recommended. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good basics, but needs updating
This book does a good job covering the many basics of making an effective presentation, including dealing with anxiety, personal appearance, planning and preparation. However, it needs to be updated to reflect the many changes in presentation technology (and technology in general) since 1993 that are available to the presenter.

For example, to quote from page 55, "CD-ROM Players--These 'read only' players (you can't record onto them from your own computer, yet!) can hold a gigantic amount of information. Some disks contain an entire encyclopedia. These devices can store color photographs, video clips, sound clips, huge data bases and other types of information that require a lot of memory. There is new technology available that will allow you to take a photograph, have it transferred to a CD-ROM disk and then bring it up on your computer screen." What next, phones without wires? Overall a good book on the subject of preparing for and delivering presentations as long as you're not looking for any tips on PowerPoint or technology-based presentations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise and to the point, good for a beginner
I would say if you never put a presentation together, or looking for few ideas in putting a presentation together, this book is for you. The material is concise and gives good backgound on how to put a professional presentation together. I recommend it to a beginning managers and executives that want to evalute their presentation mode. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kaizen- the strategies for future success
Kaizen, a Japanese word means improvement. How can Japanese enterprise success is the main topic in this book. Actually, Japan has been under economic recession for nearly 10 years. But the Japanese enterprise can still survive, and some enterprises are under the list of Fortune 500. There must be some secret behind.

This first version of this book is written in 1986, Japan at that moment still maintain a high growth, and Japanese enterprise takes a major role in the global business environment. The author found that the major reasons are due to their modification rather than innovation. And these management concepts were learned by foreign companies and used as a framework to develop their management structure. From this book, you will learn lots of the Japanese culture and Japanese management style.

Moreover, you also understand the history of management development. Most of the management concepts used in foreign countries are based on Japanese firm. Like the TQM, process oriented management, and strategies in R&D. So, after reading the book, you will learn the difference between western working culture and Japanese one.

Before writing this book, the author has done lots of primary research, and he try to summary all the findings and success factor of major Japanese enterprise, like Toyota, NTT. And all these companies now become the Global 100 companies. After reading this book, you will learn more about the success story of these enterprises, and you will also know that their history and culture as well.

But, there is some limitation, because the book has been written nearly twenty years before, the business environment is totally changed, the competition and the consumer behaviour have been changed, therefore some of the strategies are not applicable. Also, the failures of some Japanese enterprises during the economic recession also prove that some strategies mentioned here are not worked.

Kaizen is a good book for you to understand more about the Asia culture especially the Japanese firm culture. If you want to do business with Japanese partner, this book is a must to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Historical
Most American businesses no longer worry so much about the Japanese miracle. International focus has moved from Japan to China and back to Europe. Many Japanese companies are now looking to the US for recapitalization and management assistance.

So why is a book on Japanese management techniques still so relevant?

First of all, continuous improvement and lean manufacturing have become universal management tools, not strictly limited to one country. This book presents as good an introduction to the subject as any. With today's focus on execution, this topic are becoming even more current. (Dare I say topical?)

Additionally, understanding continuous improvement is still important in the context of broader corporate change. What are the strength and limitations of incremental changes versus more radical corporate moves? Read the book and learn more.

This book certainly won't turn a mediocre manager into a great leader, but Kaizen is a useful addition to the toolbox of any manager.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sound basis for working out an implementation strategy
This book covers the relevant aspects of Kaizen and its implementation. Don't expect this book to give you a step-by-step implementation plan for your company. It does something better than that: it gives you the understanding to design your own implementation plan. It is a good basis for discussion. I often reference it while lecturing about Kaizen and TPM and take a few sentences from the book to challenge the audience.
Everyone who pioneers in Kaizen in his/her company needs this understanding (and a set of brains to translate the concept to the everday reality, but that's why they pay you the big bucks, I hope).
Although it's a very good book, you will find yourself stimulated to read other material on this topic because it creates an "eager want" to know more and to see the puzzle come together. In the end, no author will do that; finalizing the puzzle is your job...

To be concrete, this book is definately recommended. You'll never understand it all by just reading one book (or by just reading, period). It will give you a quantum leap in your understanding and all concepts will be there. Only action and involvement can do more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very famous book, but academic content is not excellent
The book Kaizen is very famous and it is often cited. Only because of it's fame, it is worth reading already. Imai shows how production is organized in Japan, and he shows the enormous attention given in Japan to continuous improvement. However, he is rather simplistic about the differences between Japan and the West. However, the book gives a good introduction is some major themes in the field of continuous improvement and it is the origin of many ideas later cited by other. Thus: worth reading if you want to get to know a basic book about continuous improvements in production processes. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Middle of the road...
I didn't find any new, earth-shattering insights into the resume process, but it did layout the fundamentals nicely. I learned a few new things, and it gave me a good outline to put together a resume.
The section that describes how to pull the resume information together, would have been presented better had it been in some sort of a chart or list format. The way it is set up - it is wrtten in long sentences that stretch over a couple pages. I had to keep flipping back and forth to remember what step to do next.
There was a lot of redundant information, and I thought the examples didn't help me much.
But in the end, it did prompt me to put together a new, more concise, and tailored resume. Although the description of how to edit the final resume was a bit broad.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too General and Elementary
Book offers too simplistic and barely entry-level formatting and ideas. The styles were all basic and not varied enough, and the jobs were all low level.I am a marketing director and the upper level resumes they had were still so basic they were not useful as examples.Might be good for high school students, though.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Top-notch advice
This book is as good as it gets.Put the time into following setp-by-step and you will have a dramatically different view of your own skills.Plus, you'll end-up with a fantastic resume.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your book is great
I learnerd so much from this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is your resume ready for the world?
As a Host of the Employability and Career Planning sites, and an Interactive Resume workshop ... I like to have all kinds of Resume books and examples to refer to.No two resumes should be the same--this book gives great ideas on how to make YOUR experience stand out, not only in its wording, but also in the visual appeal.

The onlydrawback I found is that some of the sample resumes are a bit simplistic and if taken at face value, people may try to keep it so short that they don't consider all their skills.Remember, your resume is the first step to selling yourself.

Valuable reference to have around. ... Read more

The history of Barneys is the history of America itself in the 20th century. Barney Pressman was a hard-working nobody who sold mostly second-hand clothing in a nowhere neighborhood in Manhattan. From those humble beginnings rose a store that became famous for the sheer volume of its suits, and the discount prices for which they were sold. But Barney Pressman's son, Fred, had a different vision. He wanted his store to be more upscale, even if it couldn't be uptown, like Bloomingdale's. He pulled that off, but his sons--Barney's grandsons--wanted even more. They envisioned a plush uptown store, franchised around the world, with no expenses spared. And so they spent $267 million on their Madison Avenue store--$600,000 alone for a hand-assembled marble-chip floor--sinking the three-generation family business in a mere 10 years.

Levine shapes this story less as a tragedy than a lesson in hubris--and in business. All of Barney and Fred Pressman's business savvy corrupted into snobbery when Fred's sons took over. Barneys became "too New Yorky for most New Yorkers." There's an old saying that no one goes broke underestimating the taste of Americans. The converse is that fortunes are easily lost going the opposite direction. Barneys may be the most fascinating proof of that adage in American history. --Lou Schuler ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be read by anyone with a FAMILY business
Don't be put off by what may appear to be a look at one business and one family's way of doing business. This book actually explores far deeper subjects and questions such as : Why is it that so many successful family businesses fail when passed on to heirs? Why do so many solid companies with loyal customers, proven merchandise and a promising future just fall by the wayside? To those who don't know Barneys, it was started by Barney Pressman, a smart, ambitious man who built his business into a thriving industry, selling more suits than anyone in the world by the 1960's.But what makes the book interesting is what happened to his business when his sons came into the picture and the intrigue, scandal and greed that tore apart the company. I can't help wondering: Why don't the patriarchs (or matriarchs) of family businesses teach their children to run the companies just as well? Is it possible to mix family and business and do it well? The Barney's sage, of course, is not yet over and the store is still in existence. So the end of this story remains to be seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
A very enjoyable book. You pull for the Pressmans when the snobs snubthem in the beginning. You jeer at them when their position goes to theirheads and they behave very, very badly. But the really interesting part ofthe book concerns how fashion and retailing REALLY work. They appear to bejust an elaborate hoax on the consumer. This book should be read inconjunction with Teri Agin's "The End of Fashion" which shows thecomsumers are getting more and more skeptical and dissects the publicofferings of fashion stock (if you're fond of your money and want to keepit, don't buy).Hooray.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why businesses don't succeed when passed to kids
A fascinating case study on the history of a well known American business. The behind the scenes look shows the evolution through 3 generations.Looking deeper, it says a lot about the values of each of the generationswhich explains some of the troubles in America today.Maybe we've becometoo soft.

I can't recommend this book enough if you enjoy shopping orbusiness books.I continue to shop occasionally at NY and Beverly Hills. You can't go into the stores without better appreciating the history of thestore.BUY THIS BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cautionary Tale for Expansionist Managements
It seems everyone talks to Levine because as Barney Pressman once told Fred, "The Pressmans have no friends."What emerges is not only a morality play but also a case study on how not to raise your children andhow not to expand your business.Hubris is a horrible thing.Time andagain though during this decade, with Wall Street money plentiful, retailmanagements successful in one locale expand their businesses to places thatdon't want them.A concept that works in NY doesn't seem to play inPeoria, or with Barneys, in Texas. While with public companies, it's onlymoney; with Barneys, privately held, it's family and lives.Maybe that'swhat makes the Barneys' tragedy a fascinating read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Business Book
The author makes some interesting points about the rise and fall of businesses. He also presents some good character studies, and provides the necessary contrasts between those involved. However, the chronology can bedifficult to follow, and the author has to occasionally provide some fillerto beef up the book.Overall, the book is a fun, light read, with athought-provoking moment every now and then. ... Book Description

Finally, a dictionary that unravels the insider jargon of investing and trading in wordsand pictureswe can all understand. In place of cryptic definitions that are often more intimidating than the words themselves, the Dictionary of Financial Terms provides truly helpful explanations of over 700 of the most commonly used, and most commonly misunderstood financial terms, using examples, illustrations, and complementary graphics to make the words meaningful as well as memorable.

Filled with helpful cross references that link related terms and concepts, the dictionary also lists the most important terms to know for online trading, investing in stocks and mutual funds, and analyzing investment performance. Special sections also clarify the differences between frequently confused terms: what is the difference between NASD, Nasdaq and OTC, anyway?

With dramatic changes in the financial markets occurring each day, it's getting more and more difficult to read the news, let alone the business sections of daily papers, without a handy guide to financial terms by your side. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential guide for economic writing.
Not only for the young economist, I would consider this is an essential guide for those preparing economic papers to submit to academic presses. Thomson's style is warm, clear and engaging, and his advice sound. Anyone who has ever gotten a headache working through the notation of a working economic theory paper will be tempted to buy the author a copy of this book. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide for the Young Economist
This excellent book contains many humorous annecdotes, which ease the reading of a semi-technical book. Any academic student looking to write a paper can read this and gain helpful tips to make their paper a sucess. Again, this section of the book is for anyone, and is understandable to the non-economist, although examples are sometimes economically related. The second part of the book focuses on giving talks, and how to get your messsage across in the best way possible. Again, this is for any one looking to enhance their abilities to give a talk in front of people. William gives advice as how to better your communication skills and how to talk to large audiences. The third part of his book, writing referee reports, is more catered to the economist, or the types of people who need to write referee reports. Aagin, he gives helpful tips in a humorous fasion, making it an enjoyable read. If you are looking to enhance your abilities to write papers,(any high school, college, or graduate student), give talk, or write referee reports, this is an excellent source to turn to. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Newbies
As a new person to the world of financial consulting, I was searching for a way to make sense of all the different certifications available, how to go about getting them, which would be the right certification for me, etc. This book gave me 100% of what I was looking for and more. In addition to certification information, the author discusses, in a highly readable manner, other nuts-and-bolts beginner's topics, such as legal/regulatory issues, marketing, and different services one could offer a client. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting out in the field, or to someone just wanting to explore whether financial planning might be for them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff but bad writing style
Instead of filtering information and writing it appropriately, the author keeps quoting financial planners and their opinions about different topics. These opinions are often not well fundamented, repetitive, biased by self-experience or contradicting each other, in a way that it makes reading very difficult and boaring. It took me weeks to finish the book. It has useful (although basic) information for people thinking of starting in financial planning, but contend could be condensed in 20% of the pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
Great overview of the industry and how to enter into the Financial Planning profession. Highly recommended this book for those who want an insight into the job functions and roles of a typical FP.

4-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive information to someone in the practice.
Being a CPA and Financial Consultant in Hong Kong, I still find this book provides a lot of usefull information about the industry in far East. It gave me a more solid theory backup and marketing idea from US in my practice in Asia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete, concise and very helpful to those considering FC.
Getting Started in Financial Consulting by Edward J. Stone is a well written description of what you need to do for a career in Financial Counseling. It is well organized, complete and provides inside information on what it takes to get started, run a business, and be a successful Finanacial Counselor. The review of the various certification programs is quite extensive. This book can be considered the bible in not only in getting started in Financial Counseling, but in making it a career. It is also helpful for present Financial Counselors to use as a benchmark to measure up to Mr. Stone's high standards that are essentially required in this profession. Follow his guidelines and you will be successful over the long term. A must read if you are considering going into Financial Counseling. ... Read more
