Book Description Why networking is the most effective marketing tool today. The characteristics of the most successful networkers. How the world's best networkers leverage and maintain their networks. How you can build a successful networking lifestyle through effective communication, long-term partnerships, and word-of-mouth marketing. Reviews (26)
I was about to give up on this book until I got to Chapter 9. There were some very helpful tips that pointed out what I was doing wrong and where I needed to improve. But as with anything, networking takes practice. I would check this out from the library before buying.
I also didn't like the books tendency to be repetitive to a fault. For example a lot of the articles tell you not to be a "bore." This is an important fact, but I am smart enough to get it the first twenty times. I enjoyed this book, but it didn't help me much....although it did allow me to write a review with a lot of buts. ... Read more

Book Description In this definitive guide, Forrest Mosten--an internationally recognized mediation expert--helps would-be mediators answer the critical question "Do I have the values, skills, personality, and commitment necessary to mediate?" Reviews (4)
I have known the author since 1970, when he was a law student working part time for me in the foreign student office at UCLA. Even then he was thinking about how he might incorporate his strong social conscience into the practice of law. Ten years later he found his answer when he committed himself to becoming a professional mediator. For Mosten, mediation is more than an efficient means of resolving disputes, it is a way to work as a peacemaker at the person-to-person level. It provides its practitioners who are attorneys with an alternative to the adversarial nature of the legal system, which weighs heavily on many lawyers. Of course it provides the same benefit for clients. He makes his point about mediation as a peace effort dramatically in chapter one, where he states "...don't jump into a growing but still uncertain field like mediation unless you eat, breath and dream about creating peace and resolving conflict and are willing to risk everything to make it happen". In addition to maintaining a highly successful mediation practice in Los Angeles, Mosten trains future mediators and he has established a nation-wide network of mediation centers. He also is the author of three previous books on mediation. The author's purpose in writing the book is stated in the first paragraph of the preface, where he says "It was an uphill climb to build my mediation practice. This book is my effort to help you avoid many of the costly mistakes I made along the way". The book is organized into three parts, each with several chapters, followed by nine appendices. In the first part, "Is Mediation right for You?", he covers the question of what it takes to be a mediator, such as being a good listener, patient, tolerant and neutral, flexible, and empathic, among other traits. In the chapter on "Education and Training", he discusses the question of non-lawyers as mediators. Mosten admits that lawyers have certain advantages, but he lists other fields which often provide a good background, such as therapists, business persons, teachers and clergy. Whether they come from the law or other fields, he states, extensive training in mediation will be required. Here Mosten goes into some depth on this subject which is dear to his heart because he wants "...mediation to be the first stop on the conflict resolution highway", which means having "...enough trained and experienced mediators available to meet this need". Part Two, "Building Your Career as a Mediator" deals with the creation of a mediation signature, which includes advice on writing vision and mission statements to distinguish your particular practice. He also advocates having a board of directors to help with these tasks and to provide a sounding board along the way which he had earlier described as an informal group of persons whose judgment you trust. (He might more accurately have called them a "board of advisors). Another chapter, "Creating a Mediation-Friendly Environment", gets down to reading materials and arrangement of the reception room. Most important, he introduces the idea of the client library, described as a consumer-friendly collection of books, video tapes and other resources which will help clients learn what they need to help solve their own problems. This concept is related to Mosten's preference for informed client consent, and he reports that his library is well used by his clients. Part Three is "The Nuts and Bolts of Private Practice", which covers topics such as finding a place to practice, naming your practice, forming strategic partnerships and networks. With respect to networks, he uses his own Mosten Mediation Centers as an illustrative model, in which he has established local mediators around the country as subcontractors. In the chapter entitled "Strategic Planning and Investing in Yourself", he gets very specific about the time and money required to establish a mediation practice, including a breakdown of out -of-pocket costs which add up to $57,000 over a five-year period. Even though he has stated his desire to see a great increase in the number of practicing mediators, Mosten in no way sugarcoats the obstacles and challenges facing anyone who plans to enter the field. His candor, at times, would almost seem to discourage, but at least anyone who has read the book would enter the field fully warned. More important they will have read a well integrated combination of philosophy and nuts and bolts, each supporting the other. This is a critical book for those contemplating a career in mediation, it is a useful book for anyone contemplating using the services of a mediator, and it is an interesting book for those who are attracted by the concept of mediation as a force for more peaceful interpersonal relations.
Mosten's book, Mediation Career Guide, is just the book I was looking for to strategically guide me through deciding whether to go into mediation as a profession. The book is well organized and can be read cover to cover or as a reference guide. Some of the key parts of the book are 1) Deciding if Mediation is Right for You and 2) Building Your Career as a Mediator. The chapter on deciding whether to get your law degree or not for mediation was an especially important chapter for me. I completed one year of law school and then decided to re-evaluate my J.D. path. I enrolled in SMU's Dispute Resolution program to help with my decision. Mosten's book is the only mediation book that directly dealt with the J.D. dilemma. The chapter did not tell me what to do or what Mosten thinks is best. Instead, the chapter asked certain questions about my background to see whether a J.D. is a good choice or not. Mosten's book is a MUST HAVE if you are deciding whether the mediation profession is right for you and how to build a mediation practice. Thank you Forrest (Woody) Mosten for this book and all of your contributions to the peace-making profession! Roseanne Pierre
Forrest "Woody" Mosten will be familiar to most readers of this page, so I'll just mention that he's been a professional mediator for more than two decades and has written other books on this subject. In the present volume, he provides something new: a thorough, beginning-to-end nuts-and-bolts overview of what's involved in making mediation your regular job. (So far as I know, the only book even remotely comparable is Mosten's own earlier "complete" volume on the practice of mediation.) And since that's exactly what I'm interested in doing, I'm pleased to say that less than twenty-four hours after receiving the book, I'm _already_ a thousand per cent better informed about what it takes to build a career in mediation. Mosten starts at the very beginning. After a short introduction explaining how he moved into mediation himself and found it more consonant with his core values than the ordinary practice of law, he puts his readers through a few chapters of self-analysis to help us determine whether mediation might be right for us, too. (And I'm happy to say that I'm now even more firmly convinced that I'm going into what is, for me, the right field.) Then there's plenty of good advice about how to prepare for such a career, including the all-important question: should you go to law school? All of Mosten's discussions are finely nuanced, with carefully balanced summaries of the factors weighing on each side; the one about law school is especially so. (I'm currently in an evening law school program myself, at the tender age of 38, and I would certainly caution would-be mediators to consider carefully whether such a rigorous program is necessary to their practice. I wish Mosten had also addressed the separate question of what factors tell in favor of and against actually taking the bar exam, but since I plan to take it anyway, it's not a burning issue for me personally.) There's also an excellent chapter on the sorts of job available to mediators -- in, e.g., government, nonprofit enterprises, and other areas. A private mediation practice is presented as one alternative among others, and Mosten doesn't pull any punches in his discussion of what's involved in running your own mediation business; he says to expect it to be tough for the first few years if you go that route. The rest of the book is devoted to developing and marketing oneself as a mediator. I won't even try to summarize this wideranging and thorough discussion (especially since, so far, I've only skimmed it myself!). I'll just remark that, in general, this is a wonderfully well-written and highly readable work of expository prose, packed with solid advice and plenty of information from one of the world's most experienced mediators. (The bibliographic references are also excellent, though I didn't notice any surprises; some, most, or all of them may already be in your home mediation library. But it's nice to have Mosten's specific recommendations, and he's caused me to shift some things around on my to-buy list.) If you're remotely interested in a career in mediation, or even in working in the field part-time, you'll find _lots_ of useful information in this book. I recommend that you add it to your own to-buy list -- _very_ near the top. I don't think anything like it has been published in this field before. ... Read more

Book Description Each essay includes questions for reflection to help readers apply the lessons learned to their own lives and careers. The book also offers suggestions for using the stories in training workshops and ideas for making more effective use of your own and others' stories in mentoring and leading. Reviews (4)
The book is divided into eight different categories, including what were in my opinion the most insightful; "Unlearning what you thought was so", "Pain is a great teacher", and "Seeing yourself as others do". What makes this such an interesting read is that all these short essays within the eight topic areas reflect very personal insights into the people themselves. What events helped them learn and grow, what successes, or failures, helped them become who they are today? We are given a rare glimpse into some very real personal experiences, in which we all can relate on some level. I was struck time and again at just how "normal" these leaders are, and behind the names, the publications, and the prestige of being well known and a leader in your field, are some remarkable stories of struggle and perseverance. Highly recommended, but not for the organizational wisdom or business tips, but rather for the humanity and depth of the personal testimonies. We can all benefit from the wisdom of others whose own lessons learned can be encouraging and timely regardless of where you may be on your own journey.

Book Description Recruiting on the Web is the most comprehensive and advanced guide to Internet recruiting available anywhere. It explains the best practices, creative ideas and recruiting tools used by the most forward-looking companies and professional recruiters to lower their recruiting costs, slash cycle time, and hire the very best candidates via the Web. Recruiting on the Web will help recruiters and Human Resources professionals plan a Web-based recruiting campaign to quickly fill a position with the right candidate. It will also help managers, executives, and small-business owners save thousands of dollars in advertising costs by taking charge of their own hiring process, using the power of the Web. Readers will learn to: Reviews (10)
I've been a recruiter and manager since 1994 and have been through every Web-recruiting class and book ever offered. AIRS was the first (I went through AIRS I and II in 1998) and is still by far the best training in this field. I read this book when it was published last year and have just purchased a dozen more for new recruiters we plan to hire soon. It is the most systematic, comprehensive "how to" guide for e-recruiting I've found.
Finding applicants through newspaper advertising will be with us for a while, for some jobs. Even some of those jobs are now offered through major job boards. For the positions beyond low-skilled welders, fast-food burger flippers, and convenience store clerks, employers will increasingly use the internet to recruit. This shift shatters the myth that hiring is local; the web is world-wide. Recruiting is global. OK, with this historical and future-focused concept in mind, how do we do this on-line recruiting? Foster's book tells us-step by step at a strategic level and at a tactical level. It is not a book for webmasters, recruiting site developers, or code programmers. This book delivers on the higher levels, providing company owners, executives, and managers a valuable insight into what needs to be done and why. Human resource executives will find this volume very helpful. Some HR managers will find it a great tool to open deeper discussion with their superiors; others will find it more valuable in their efforts to understand where their leaders are trying to go. The book begins, appropriately, with some of the "big picture" of recruiting, then turns to the use of the internet. In Chapter 1, there is a list of stages to the process of e-recruiting: recruit your friends, create or enhance your organization's recruiting web site, attract the best candidates, find passive candidates, and assess your applicants. The organization of the book is different, which may throw off a reader expecting an expansion of the five stages. Foster explores various aspects of the recruiting website in Part Two, but Part Three is titled Advertise Your Job Openings. Part Four is Searching for Passive Candidates, but there is not a separate section on assessing applicants-which will be an increasingly important aspect of e-recruiting. You'll find a tremendous amount of valuable insight in these pages. The book is seasoned with a wide range of resources, mostly presented (understandably) as website addresses. Some I recognized, others I'd heard of, and there were still some the author missed (like www.....com for recruiting communities); but, this is a rapidly-changing field. Many readers will find themselves a bit overwhelmed and confused as they read this book. So much information all at once! Yes, that's the reality; and it's a good lesson. Read the book cover to cover, then go back with a highlighter and a pad (or note-taking computer file) to design the right strategy for your company. You'll be reading about cutting-edge ideas and resources, so don't expect to grasp it all right away. Commentary on trends and processes is well interwoven with things to do. Expect to be inspired, stimulated, and fully-loaded with work to do.

The only shortcoming I find with the book is its focus on high level research. As a top scientist at a government lab, Feibelman directs his comments to those whose aspirations are similar to his. Not all of us who do research aspire to, or can, be tops in our field however. If you're looking for a book that tells you how to balance teaching and research or how to survive in different types of academic institutions, for example, a better choice would be Tomorrow's Professor by Richard Reis. Feibelman focuses only on the research side of the coin however. Still, the book is excellent and can be useful to anyone whose career includes scientific research. I only wish I had found it earlier!
Feibelman's suggestion that all research should tell a compelling story. This is advice that any academic -- even those in the humanities and social sciences - would be wise to follow. I am a professional counselor and coach to academics and this is the first book I advise for grad students and junior faculty in the hard sciences -- especially those who work in labs. My one complaint (and it is significant) is that Feiblelman is sexist. He presents 6 vignettes in the beginning of his book about career mistakes made by academics. Five of the stories are about men who make tactical career errors. One story is about a woman -- her mistakes are personal, psychological difficulties -- she tries too hard to please her father and ends up becoming a workaholic who doesn't have time to bear children.

I like this book, bit I wish it had some more specific exercises and came with some audio: a CD or records.
This book had some elementary basics on sound levels and accoustics, but clubs have people to do that while your setting up your band, so what's the point?
The book hits on a lot of key points and has an encouraging tone, balanced out by a bit of sarcastic humor. For instance, it notes the likely frustrations from trying a new technique (yes, everyone stinks in the beginning), but this just requires practice, practice, practice. The book has also been right on the mark about how most people in the field, from experienced DJs to record store operators, are quite helpful. Even when I pass the beginner stage, it will surely be a useful reference well into the future. ... Read more

Years ago, most of these new managers were thrown into the fray with little training or mentoring. Today, that seldom happens. Instead, training courses and mentoring are almost always available. Yet, despite having more help, many new engineering managers continue to fail. Lost and Found is aimed at providing additional perspective and information to help great engineers become great engineering managers. Yet many new engineering managers may not want to read a "fable" about doing their jobs better. I hope they will suspend their skepticism long enough to give this outstanding fable a chance to help them. Business fables usually don't work for engineering managers. First, they don't talk about working on technical projects. Second, they are often so simple as to seem insulting to an educated professional. It's like being asked to read Alice in Wonderland in order to manage better. Third, the situations don't provide any "aha's" based on general experiences. Fourth, the directions are often limited to one way to get the job done. Lost & Found overcomes all of those problems. Larry Parks has all of the best and worst characteristics of new engineering managers . . . and receives training, feedback and mentoring that just don't strike him as relevant. But as his project spins increasingly out of control and behind schedule, he realizes that something has to give. His family and his boss are both disappointed in him. As a result, he's given a chance to take time off to get his thinking sorted out. During that time off, he begins to experience the consequences of all the worst parts of his own management style . . . and tries out better ways to do things that allow him to enjoy better results. The lessons are summarized simply as a Leadership Credo of: "My Team Needs to KNOW 1. Do I have a clear view of the future I am trying to create, and does my team share that view? My Team Needs to GROW 2. Are my team members more valuable to each other, to the company, and to themselves today than they were a year ago? My Team Needs to OWN 3. Do the people on my team perform like hired hands or as if they're partners in business with me?" In the story, Larry comes back to the office and uses these principles to turn his project around and improve his career. While all of this is happening, Larry's mentor (who could be poster boy for how not to manage -- using Theory X) sees his career crash and burn. The lesson isn't lost of Larry. After the fable is over, the authors do a fine job of providing brief guidance on other methods of working with a team to apply these three principles. I would be surprised if I will ever read a business fable as good as this one for its intended audience. I recommend it without reservation. As I finished the book, I began to realize that most business books would be more helpful if the authors focused more narrowly on a particular type of reader . . . rather than trying to help everyone in the same way. I hope these authors will write more fables, and aim them at other specific audiences that need help making the transition into effective management.
Lost and Found is different. Its plot is multilayered and compelling, and its characters more than just one-dimensional mouthpieces for reader and writer. Like other Sussman/Deep offerings, Lost and Found has sound content, presented clearly and tightly. This book, written along with Alex Stiber, takes the Sussman/Deep canon in a fruitful new direction. I'll be recommending this book to clients.

Book Description In Life Without Limits, Bassett asks, "If you could have, do, and be anything right now, what would you ask for?" Eight out of ten people are unable to answer this simple question. How about you? Do you know how to get what you want? Do you even know what you want? What do you see when you look in the mirror? A self-confident, radiant person who is living life to the fullest? Or do you see a frustrated, insecure, dissatisfied person who doesn't know how to change things? Bassett says, "In my work, I am continually amazed at the number of people who are personally, professionally, and financially frustrated. But the worst part is, if they could change things, they aren't sure how, or even what they would change." People stop dreaming, settling for a life that is neither satisfying nor rewarding because their fears and insecurities prevent them from seeing what they want in life, and how to get it. Acquiring happiness, wealth, or success on any level is difficult when you aren't clear about what you want and you don't have a plan. Before you know it, years pass by, and you're looking back with regrets. "In my work over the past fourteen years, I have encountered two types of people. The first group is the "doers." They are the movers and the shakers. They plan their life and are strongly motivated. They are on a clear path, know exactly what they want, and they are willing to take the risks to get it. The second group is the "drifters." They drift through life with no real sense of direction, ending up frustrated. This can happen to people in the most prestigious occupations. The drifters have a hard time establishing a sense of true happiness, satisfaction, or security because they know they aren't where they "should be," but they don't know what to do about it. Life Without Limits helps you clarify what you want in every area of your life. By using Bassett's powerful techniques you will change, therefore your life will change. Your thoughts are magnets attracting everything from the type of people you meet to the types of opportunities that come your way. Your thinking must be clear, distinct, and sharply defined. Your focused thoughts elicit emotion; your emotions ignite your actions and have a tremendous effect on the universal energy that surrounds you. You control your life. You control your destiny. And only you can take steps to change it. Life Without Limits helps you take back your power. Life Without Limits is the complete guide to attaining abundance in every area of your life. It will help you to achieve satisfaction and fulfillment personally, professionally, and financially. Once you have defined what success means for you, you will clarify your dreams and start pursuing them. Opportunities will present themselves, new doors will open, and you will begin to live the life you were meant to live: a life without limits. "Begin now to change the person you are into the person you know you have the potential to become." -- Lucinda Bassett Reviews (11)
One would think that after having produced one of the most successful self-awareness and self-help programs of all time and having seen that program go on to be used by countless individuals, not to mention doctors and mental health organizations, Lucinda would rest on her laurels. But Lucinda hasn't - she never stops! She keeps growing and coming up with wonderful and inspiring ways to view life, difficult situations, and to cultivate self-esteem. Perhaps the most striking thing about this book is the revelation by Lucinda that she, whose programs, books, and seminars have been effectively utilized by many clinical institutions and major corporations is always guided by her intuition. This stuck me as interesting because so often intuition is thought of as untrustworthy, irrational, and unreliable; yet Lucinda's work is consistent, rational, effective, and well respected by many established and reputable persons and institutions. Lucinda tells the reader that when you become more respectful of your intuition, or "gut feelings," you can often bring into your life a sense of synchronicity that you can then utilize to help gain your heart's desire - whether it be inner peace, a new car, a new job, or a more understanding relationship with family members. Thus, this book adds deeper insight and dimension to a topic that has always been present in Lucinda's work - spirituality. Authors and speakers who are as knowledgeable as Lucinda can sometimes come across as being a little patronizing, a little better-than-though, but Lucinda almost comes across as being a friend. The information in this book can and does stand on its own, but Lucinda has a wonderful way of presenting the information. She's just one of those people who has a gift to make you feel like you know her. She comes across as very down-to-earth, humble, and caring. I really like this book! Andrew Parodi

Although almost everyone admires Napoleon Hill's work on the requirements for being successful, most will agree that he was always somewhat opaque in describing what he had learned. His later books are clearer, but not crystal clear. For that reason, I'm always pleased when someone connects the dots better on the same subject. The Twelve Universal Laws of Success is such a book. I am very glad I read it. Mr. Herbert Harris does quite a remarkable job of combining the perspectives of physical science, psychology and different religions to provide a very clear view of how to lead a life directed towards worthy goals that you achieve. Those who are Christians will find strength in his use of many Biblical quotations. As I read the twelve laws, I sometimes felt like I was being taken on a tour around a statue. By seeing more perspectives, I could understand the holism of the statue much better . . . or in this case, what is required for success. So don't be surprised at what will seem like a little redundancy in the rules. Some of them are really axioms of other rules . . . but ones that you might not have figured out on your own. For example, the law of change is an axiom of the law of thought. The material is well organized. The book begins with much helpful background information, including how to study any new subject or book. Now, that's getting down to brass tacks! Each law then has its own chapter, and you will find chapter summaries and study guides at the end of each. If you apply yourself to the study guides, you benefit from the book will be enormous. That's one of the many improvements over Napoleon Hill in the book. I also liked the way that Mr. Harris was careful to explain what his words and concepts mean. Success is "the continuous realization of the outcomes or results you desire." He also carefully describes the conscious, subconscious and superconscious minds. The laws themselves are ones that most people will recognize from their own experiences and religious studies. Here are a few examples of the laws summarized (see pages 181-183 for the whole list): The Universal Law of Thought ("You become what you think about most of the time.") The Universal Law of Change ("You change your life by changing your thinking.") The Universal Law of Relationships ("Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."). I especially liked his advice for how to end your day. Ask yourself, "Did I do everything I could do today to make tomorrow the way I want it to be?" He encourages you to live each day so that you can earnestly answer, "Yes, I did everything I could, with all I had to do it with!" Mr. Herbert suggests that this book will be of most help to those who are having fairly good results in their own lives . . . but need to fine-tune what they are doing. He also suggests the book for those who are just starting out on their own as young adults. Although he does not mention it, I also think this book could be a life saver for those whose lives have crashed and burned in some fundamental way . . . and want to clean up their act. As I finished the book, I was again reminded of the value of setting and pursuing worthwhile goals for ourselves. We can each do great things . . . if only we focus on doing so!

Seriously, there is no useful information in this book about option trading. There is no strategy that you can apply. I would give my book to charity but whats the point
