5-0 out of 5 stars A Resource of Great Value, Short and Long Term
For more than a decade, referral marketing has been a strong part of my business. I've done alot of reading on the topic and found Masters of Networking to be a great collection of real life experiences. It reinforced my commitment to word-of-mouth marketing and presented many new ideas. I applaud the work of Dr. Misner and Mr. Morgan, as they have put in a single document a wealth of information, in addition to the contributions they made to the book. Without question, Masters of Networking is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Wisdom for Personal and Business Success
Ivan Misner and his Business Network International organization first alerted me to the power of networking, and I have benefited greatly by using the principles outlined in his previous book "The World's Best Known Marketing Secret." Now "Masters of Networking," to which I'm proud to have been a contributor, gives you both the motivation and the how-to for becoming a master networker yourself. Read this book and use the principles that have made so many of its contributors so successful and you'll find yourself achieving your most important goals. If you have children about to head off for college or the working world, it would be hard to imagine a more helpful and practical gift!

2-0 out of 5 stars More like 2.5 Stars
I was a little surprised that most of the chapters were about how successful networking has been for people. I already agreed that networking would be helpful, so why try to convince me? The essays were helpful to illustrate some points, but the book could have been more concise. After a while the essays became annoying as you could have substituted any name and any profession. And, if there was one more reference to BNI, I would have...

I was about to give up on this book until I got to Chapter 9. There were some very helpful tips that pointed out what I was doing wrong and where I needed to improve. But as with anything, networking takes practice. I would check this out from the library before buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a great book to have
This is one of the must have book on your bookshelf. It is the first book that i haven't been able to close it and go to bed until i read it cover to cover. Although i had to refer to it again and again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?
Masters of Networking offers some warm and inspirational stories, but fails to serve up meatier content. I found many stories about the greatness of networking, but few articles that offered effective strategies.

I also didn't like the books tendency to be repetitive to a fault. For example a lot of the articles tell you not to be a "bore." This is an important fact, but I am smart enough to get it the first twenty times.

I enjoyed this book, but it didn't help me much....although it did allow me to write a review with a lot of buts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
This book is one of the most helpful and insightful books that I have read. If you are thinking of, or already are, a mediator, this book is full of great information, ideas, and helpful hints.
This book is an easy read, you could read it in one evening and then be on your way to implement the things that you have learned.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book on Mediation
Forrest Mosten has written what must be the definitive book for those who are considering or might consider a career in mediation.

I have known the author since 1970, when he was a law student working part time for me in the foreign student office at UCLA. Even then he was thinking about how he might incorporate his strong social conscience into the practice of law. Ten years later he found his answer when he committed himself to becoming a professional mediator. For Mosten, mediation is more than an efficient means of resolving disputes, it is a way to work as a peacemaker at the person-to-person level. It provides its practitioners who are attorneys with an alternative to the adversarial nature of the legal system, which weighs heavily on many lawyers. Of course it provides the same benefit for clients. He makes his point about mediation as a peace effort dramatically in chapter one, where he states "...don't jump into a growing but still uncertain field like mediation unless you eat, breath and dream about creating peace and resolving conflict and are willing to risk everything to make it happen".

In addition to maintaining a highly successful mediation practice in Los Angeles, Mosten trains future mediators and he has established a nation-wide network of mediation centers. He also is the author of three previous books on mediation.

The author's purpose in writing the book is stated in the first paragraph of the preface, where he says "It was an uphill climb to build my mediation practice. This book is my effort to help you avoid many of the costly mistakes I made along the way".

The book is organized into three parts, each with several chapters, followed by nine appendices. In the first part, "Is Mediation right for You?", he covers the question of what it takes to be a mediator, such as being a good listener, patient, tolerant and neutral, flexible, and empathic, among other traits. In the chapter on "Education and Training", he discusses the question of non-lawyers as mediators. Mosten admits that lawyers have certain advantages, but he lists other fields which often provide a good background, such as therapists, business persons, teachers and clergy. Whether they come from the law or other fields, he states, extensive training in mediation will be required. Here Mosten goes into some depth on this subject which is dear to his heart because he wants "...mediation to be the first stop on the conflict resolution highway", which means having "...enough trained and experienced mediators available to meet this need".

Part Two, "Building Your Career as a Mediator" deals with the creation of a mediation signature, which includes advice on writing vision and mission statements to distinguish your particular practice. He also advocates having a board of directors to help with these tasks and to provide a sounding board along the way which he had earlier described as an informal group of persons whose judgment you trust. (He might more accurately have called them a "board of advisors). Another chapter, "Creating a Mediation-Friendly Environment", gets down to reading materials and arrangement of the reception room. Most important, he introduces the idea of the client library, described as a consumer-friendly collection of books, video tapes and other resources which will help clients learn what they need to help solve their own problems. This concept is related to Mosten's preference for informed client consent, and he reports that his library is well used by his clients.

Part Three is "The Nuts and Bolts of Private Practice", which covers topics such as finding a place to practice, naming your practice, forming strategic partnerships and networks. With respect to networks, he uses his own Mosten Mediation Centers as an illustrative model, in which he has established local mediators around the country as subcontractors. In the chapter entitled "Strategic Planning and Investing in Yourself", he gets very specific about the time and money required to establish a mediation practice, including a breakdown of out -of-pocket costs which add up to $57,000 over a five-year period.

Even though he has stated his desire to see a great increase in the number of practicing mediators, Mosten in no way sugarcoats the obstacles and challenges facing anyone who plans to enter the field. His candor, at times, would almost seem to discourage, but at least anyone who has read the book would enter the field fully warned. More important they will have read a well integrated combination of philosophy and nuts and bolts, each supporting the other.

This is a critical book for those contemplating a career in mediation, it is a useful book for anyone contemplating using the services of a mediator, and it is an interesting book for those who are attracted by the concept of mediation as a force for more peaceful interpersonal relations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE book for all Mediators!
Dear fellow mediators or anyone looking into the mediation profession:

Mosten's book, Mediation Career Guide, is just the book I was looking for to strategically guide me through deciding whether to go into mediation as a profession. The book is well organized and can be read cover to cover or as a reference guide. Some of the key parts of the book are 1) Deciding if Mediation is Right for You and 2) Building Your Career as a Mediator.

The chapter on deciding whether to get your law degree or not for mediation was an especially important chapter for me. I completed one year of law school and then decided to re-evaluate my J.D. path. I enrolled in SMU's Dispute Resolution program to help with my decision. Mosten's book is the only mediation book that directly dealt with the J.D. dilemma. The chapter did not tell me what to do or what Mosten thinks is best. Instead, the chapter asked certain questions about my background to see whether a J.D. is a good choice or not.

Mosten's book is a MUST HAVE if you are deciding whether the mediation profession is right for you and how to build a mediation practice.

Thank you Forrest (Woody) Mosten for this book and all of your contributions to the peace-making profession!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just got this yesterday; already love it
I usually wait a little longer than this to write a review of a book, but I'm thoroughly pleased and excited by this one.

Forrest "Woody" Mosten will be familiar to most readers of this page, so I'll just mention that he's been a professional mediator for more than two decades and has written other books on this subject. In the present volume, he provides something new: a thorough, beginning-to-end nuts-and-bolts overview of what's involved in making mediation your regular job. (So far as I know, the only book even remotely comparable is Mosten's own earlier "complete" volume on the practice of mediation.)

And since that's exactly what I'm interested in doing, I'm pleased to say that less than twenty-four hours after receiving the book, I'm _already_ a thousand per cent better informed about what it takes to build a career in mediation.

Mosten starts at the very beginning. After a short introduction explaining how he moved into mediation himself and found it more consonant with his core values than the ordinary practice of law, he puts his readers through a few chapters of self-analysis to help us determine whether mediation might be right for us, too. (And I'm happy to say that I'm now even more firmly convinced that I'm going into what is, for me, the right field.)

Then there's plenty of good advice about how to prepare for such a career, including the all-important question: should you go to law school? All of Mosten's discussions are finely nuanced, with carefully balanced summaries of the factors weighing on each side; the one about law school is especially so. (I'm currently in an evening law school program myself, at the tender age of 38, and I would certainly caution would-be mediators to consider carefully whether such a rigorous program is necessary to their practice. I wish Mosten had also addressed the separate question of what factors tell in favor of and against actually taking the bar exam, but since I plan to take it anyway, it's not a burning issue for me personally.)

There's also an excellent chapter on the sorts of job available to mediators -- in, e.g., government, nonprofit enterprises, and other areas. A private mediation practice is presented as one alternative among others, and Mosten doesn't pull any punches in his discussion of what's involved in running your own mediation business; he says to expect it to be tough for the first few years if you go that route.

The rest of the book is devoted to developing and marketing oneself as a mediator. I won't even try to summarize this wideranging and thorough discussion (especially since, so far, I've only skimmed it myself!). I'll just remark that, in general, this is a wonderfully well-written and highly readable work of expository prose, packed with solid advice and plenty of information from one of the world's most experienced mediators.

(The bibliographic references are also excellent, though I didn't notice any surprises; some, most, or all of them may already be in your home mediation library. But it's nice to have Mosten's specific recommendations, and he's caused me to shift some things around on my to-buy list.)

If you're remotely interested in a career in mediation, or even in working in the field part-time, you'll find _lots_ of useful information in this book. I recommend that you add it to your own to-buy list -- _very_ near the top. I don't think anything like it has been published in this field before. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief glimpses into the motivations of great leaders
This is a wonderful book to read, and can be picked up and read through in a sitting or taken in small sections. The book contains 37 two to three page essays by some of the best and most well known of human resources and organizational leaders and pioneers. From Stephen Cover to Dave Ulrich, from Marshall Goldsmith to Robert Eichenger, these individuals have done much to shape current thought in the areas of organizational development and leadership.

The book is divided into eight different categories, including what were in my opinion the most insightful; "Unlearning what you thought was so", "Pain is a great teacher", and "Seeing yourself as others do". What makes this such an interesting read is that all these short essays within the eight topic areas reflect very personal insights into the people themselves. What events helped them learn and grow, what successes, or failures, helped them become who they are today?

We are given a rare glimpse into some very real personal experiences, in which we all can relate on some level. I was struck time and again at just how "normal" these leaders are, and behind the names, the publications, and the prestige of being well known and a leader in your field, are some remarkable stories of struggle and perseverance.

Highly recommended, but not for the organizational wisdom or business tips, but rather for the humanity and depth of the personal testimonies. We can all benefit from the wisdom of others whose own lessons learned can be encouraging and timely regardless of where you may be on your own journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Leaders REALLY Need to Know
As an internal consultant in a very large organization, I was thrilled to find this book and could not put it down until I finished it. Senior leaders are expected to be the fount of all knowledge, work in a high-pressure environment, never lose composure and NEVER let them see you sweat! It is, of course, rare to devote any part of a business day to asking the kinds of questions posed in this book. We are using it as a pilot program for leaders to discuss and discover who they are, rather than just what they do.It has given us an opportunity to talk about the very personal issues that a leader must address, and they have taken to it with great enthusiasm. Finishing this book, you are not left so much with the impression of the "guru's wisdom" as you are left to reflect upon your own wisdom. Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Journeys: Top Management Experts Share Hard-Earned
This book is wonderful! It reminds me of "Chicken Soup for the Soul". It touches your heart and inspires at the same time. You get to see "turning points" in the lives of real people. But not just any real people, these people are among the most successful people in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A saturday afternoon read
Learning Journeys is such a pleasant book to read. This book is personal. It¹s personal essays by some of the great management and business leaders in the world. In the book, these leaders reveal the life-changing events of their lives. There are some sad stories, some funny stories, and some spiritual stories: some of the stories are business-related and some are totally personal. What struck me so much about this book is that it reveals the human side of business, something that is so often forgotten. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Treasure
This book is a treasure. It is a good book for anyone in the age group of about 18-75 of any ethnicity, religion and socio-economic background. It addresses safety, among other issues, for women travelers. This book includes more than information one could find on the Internet about particular opportunities and organizations in any region of the world. It includes in depth studies as well as information for the person considering volunteering overseas to examine his/her motivations and come up with criteria to apply to choosing an organization as well as a location. In addition, this book discusses issues surrounding language barriers and how to overcome the obstacles as well as use the volunteer opportunity to become fluent in another language. This book makes a wonderful gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recruiter's Web Bible
This book is terrific. Even with years of recruiting experience and a strong capability using the Web, I benefited from this systematic, comprehensive, detailed and up-to-date review of how to use the Web for attracting and finding the right candidates. It is easy to read, yet packed with great information that is well-organized and easy to access for reference. I highly recommend this book for company recruiters as well as outside recruiting firms and researchers.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the definitive book on e-recruiting
This is a great, well organized book. It takes you through e-recruitment top to bottom, from setting up an online employee network, to building your Website, working with job boards, and then to Flipping and X-raying sites to find passiove candidates.

I've been a recruiter and manager since 1994 and have been through every Web-recruiting class and book ever offered. AIRS was the first (I went through AIRS I and II in 1998) and is still by far the best training in this field. I read this book when it was published last year and have just purchased a dozen more for new recruiters we plan to hire soon. It is the most systematic, comprehensive "how to" guide for e-recruiting I've found.

1-0 out of 5 stars Give me a break!
Sorry everyone but I have been recruiting for over 8 years and this book is literally NOTHING NEW!!!! Please save your money on the training and the book. SORRY! You would be better off investing in a years worth of service from a company that has a really good search engine that really does about the same thing. Plus, now adays you can't get into the sites like you used to anyway so 1/2 of this stuff is totally out dated! I feel totally ripped off. If you know just the basics of the web you can still figure the stuff out in this book on your own on some free recruiting sites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Thought-Provoking Resource
Recruiting top talent has always been an important objective for employers. Over the past few years, we have not seen the competitive intensity in recruiting that we saw in the go-go years of the late 1990s because of the slowed economy. This quieter period has given technologists and strategists a chance to catch up, to develop new approaches, to refine new systems. The new designs for attracting preferred candidates were not even available a few years ago; now they will be essential for employers desiring to find, attract, and hire the best talent to achieve their objectives.

Finding applicants through newspaper advertising will be with us for a while, for some jobs. Even some of those jobs are now offered through major job boards. For the positions beyond low-skilled welders, fast-food burger flippers, and convenience store clerks, employers will increasingly use the internet to recruit. This shift shatters the myth that hiring is local; the web is world-wide. Recruiting is global.

OK, with this historical and future-focused concept in mind, how do we do this on-line recruiting? Foster's book tells us-step by step at a strategic level and at a tactical level. It is not a book for webmasters, recruiting site developers, or code programmers. This book delivers on the higher levels, providing company owners, executives, and managers a valuable insight into what needs to be done and why. Human resource executives will find this volume very helpful. Some HR managers will find it a great tool to open deeper discussion with their superiors; others will find it more valuable in their efforts to understand where their leaders are trying to go.

The book begins, appropriately, with some of the "big picture" of recruiting, then turns to the use of the internet. In Chapter 1, there is a list of stages to the process of e-recruiting: recruit your friends, create or enhance your organization's recruiting web site, attract the best candidates, find passive candidates, and assess your applicants. The organization of the book is different, which may throw off a reader expecting an expansion of the five stages. Foster explores various aspects of the recruiting website in Part Two, but Part Three is titled Advertise Your Job Openings. Part Four is Searching for Passive Candidates, but there is not a separate section on assessing applicants-which will be an increasingly important aspect of e-recruiting. You'll find a tremendous amount of valuable insight in these pages.

The book is seasoned with a wide range of resources, mostly presented (understandably) as website addresses. Some I recognized, others I'd heard of, and there were still some the author missed (like www.....com for recruiting communities); but, this is a rapidly-changing field. Many readers will find themselves a bit overwhelmed and confused as they read this book. So much information all at once! Yes, that's the reality; and it's a good lesson. Read the book cover to cover, then go back with a highlighter and a pad (or note-taking computer file) to design the right strategy for your company. You'll be reading about cutting-edge ideas and resources, so don't expect to grasp it all right away. Commentary on trends and processes is well interwoven with things to do. Expect to be inspired, stimulated, and fully-loaded with work to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great new ideas in this book
I attended AIRS classes several years ago and they changed the way I recruit and how I use the Internet. This book covers even more territory than the classes I attended, and has opened my eyes in new ways again. My company uses newspapers, job boards and job fairs to recruit, but there's no question we get the best candidates when we use AIRS techniques. AIRS is definitely the leader in this field, and seems to keep coming back with fresh new ideas. Highly recommended for anyone in recruiting or HR. ... Read more

Feibelman has done a great service for future scientists in writing this book. Although a quick read, it's dense with good advice for budding scientists, whether they be at the grad student, postdoc, or assistant professor stage of their careers. For example, he advises against showing an outline at the beginning of a talk because it is as superfluous as it is ubiquitous. (See the review by Gregory McMahan for more specifics.)

The only shortcoming I find with the book is its focus on high level research. As a top scientist at a government lab, Feibelman directs his comments to those whose aspirations are similar to his. Not all of us who do research aspire to, or can, be tops in our field however. If you're looking for a book that tells you how to balance teaching and research or how to survive in different types of academic institutions, for example, a better choice would be Tomorrow's Professor by Richard Reis. Feibelman focuses only on the research side of the coin however.

Still, the book is excellent and can be useful to anyone whose career includes scientific research. I only wish I had found it earlier!

5-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining read with superb advice
This is a succinct, pleasurable read that will help academics in the sciences pick an advisor, choose a research project, give excellent presentations, land a post-doc position, decide whether to go into industry or academia, and eventually get tenure. Wow!
Feibelman packs a career's-worth of tips and tactics in his slim volume and makes it entertaining at the same time.

Feibelman's suggestion that all research should tell a compelling story. This is advice that any academic -- even those in the humanities and social sciences - would be wise to follow.

I am a professional counselor and coach to academics and this is the first book I advise for grad students and junior faculty in the hard sciences -- especially those who work in labs.
My professor husband is a microbiologist and epidemiologist at the University of North Carolina, and after reading the first section of the first chapter of this book, I ran to my husband and insisted that he buy a copy for every student who comes near his lab.

My one complaint (and it is significant) is that Feiblelman is sexist. He presents 6 vignettes in the beginning of his book about career mistakes made by academics. Five of the stories are about men who make tactical career errors. One story is about a woman -- her mistakes are personal, psychological difficulties -- she tries too hard to please her father and ends up becoming a workaholic who doesn't have time to bear children.
Men are allocated work difficulties while the sole woman's problems are emotional in nature. I find this to be an inexcusible example of stereotyping from an otherwise saavy and helpful sage. Shame on you, Feibelman.

3-0 out of 5 stars Obviously...
Most of the pages in this brief book are devoted to statements of the obvious that anyone worthy of a Ph.D. should be able to discern on his or her own. There are some useful points on presentations and communication. The author points out the excessive burdens of being an assistant professor and suggests that the candidate establish a reputation in industry or government, then seek a (presumably tenured) academic post. Though I agree that one should avoid being an assistant professor at all costs, I cannot think of a single professor in my discipline (Organic Chemistry) who has obtained a tenured position without moving up through the assistant professor rank.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This is a great book for absolutely anyone working on his/her PhD or looking for career advice at the end of their PhD. In fact, it will be a great help even to those who are long finished with their PhD's especially if they are currently advising their own students.
The writing style is very friendly and straightforward, as if the author is talking to you, sitting across from you. More importantly, the advise is very practical and comes from someone who has a lot of experience in academia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even if you think you know all this...
You'll find a lot of valuable advice in this book even if you think you already know all these things. I was at first skeptical that something new for me would emerge from this tiny book (especially after having attended many seminars on topics discussed in the book), yet in many cases I felt that what I read did strengthen my understanding of the processes and tradeoffs involved in selecting an advisor/mentor, making a career choice (industry vs. academia), writing a grant proposal, etc.
If you are on the verge of such an important step in your professional life and decide to save yourself the $10 or so that the book costs, you are truly shortchanging yourself.
If nothing else, read the book at the library -- it would take you 2-3 hours, but the results will be a lifetime's worth! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just an okay book
Nothing exciting about this book. May be a good bed time reader if you are in the process of looking for jobs [aren't we all??? :-)]. Some common sense topics restated. But neatly written book. No complaints on that.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
My sister-in-law, who interviews people for a living, took a look at this book when it came in, and pronounced it excellent. For many of us who have been in a position for a number of years, interview skills are something that most definitely does *not* come naturally. This book helps bring people like myself over the hump to feel more at home in basic interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas!
This was a great book for preparing to ace the interview. I especially liked the section on persistence. Another fantastic book I found that not only covered the interview but also gave an entire road map for the job hunt was "10 Insider Secrets To Job Hunting Success!" by Todd Bermont.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good interview prep
I would highly recommend this book for job interviewing preparation. Also recommended for job interview preparation are the job interview guides published by Vault.com, including the Vault Guide to the Case Interview and the Vault Guide to Finance Interviews. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best
Ok, so you're looking for a book on interviews - well, look no further. This book does not only give you practise questions and answers but it covers many important topics like 'globalisation', how your MBTI profile can help you and NLP. I think this book will be especially helpfull if you're aiming at higher profile jobs (or moving into). Ofcourse you need to do your own homework (maybe get your MBTI profile done i.e. know yourself, read more on other topics etc), but the book puts you on the right track. The only book I will ever need to use or refer back to. Indespensable!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful book for all working women
The first point that is interesting about this book is the acceptance of the differences between the attitudes of men and women regarding their obligations at home and at work. Realising how we have been brought up, in a way that makes networking, taking risks or finding mentors much easier for men, is an important step towards changing our own attitudes that stand on our way to achieving our goals. One more point of interest is that the book addresses women not only in the corporate sector, but its concepts can be easily applied to all areas of emloyment. The book is highly readable, with many examples and success stories. For those of us using vision aids, note that the book's lettering is well thought of, not large print but comfortable, which makes reading less complicated than the usual overcrowded format used in business books. ... Book Description

DJs have gone from being underpaid live jukeboxes to becoming premier entertainers, producers, businessmen, and musicians capable of commanding admiration from thousands and earning serious money. Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton's Last Night a DJ Saved My Life was the definitive history of the DJ. Now they gather their mastery of the artistic and technical aspects of being a DJ into a clear, accessible, and entertaining guide. How to DJ is the perfect guide -- from the most basic keys to establishing a music collection and a distinctive sound, to elementary record-spinning, to the complex skills of scratching, hot-mixing, and beat-juggling, as well as the inimitable art of creating an evening of sound that is perfectly timed, balanced, and unforgettable. Diagrams throughout illustrate phrases, beat timing, and song structure with no reliance on music theory, and resource lists recommend everything from which songs are best (and most fun) to learn with, to good sources for building a library of disks, CDs, and MP3s. For those who want to turn pro, the authors give sage advice on the vagaries of the club and music business. Short quotes, anecdotes, and photos of famous DJs such as Grandmaster Flash and Derrick Carter are featured. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Compiled internet reading
This is a fun book, well written. Most of the stuff in it I already learned from doing google searches. Many of the quotes from this book are pulled off of web pages, many of the resources they send you to are web-pages (a few of which are now dead links). In England this book is called "How To DJ Properly", and it does have a bit of a chip on it's shoulder, as if the Brits invented DJing and are the ones who do it "right".

I like this book, bit I wish it had some more specific exercises and came with some audio: a CD or records.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn & then play....
This book is just one of those good buys that you have to do in life. I have researched the web ,try videos ,and some other books to "culturize" my self about what and how djs do it and this piece of information is just simple the best one. Plus comes with lots of web addresses where you can expand what they are taking about. Easy to understand, light reading, and the best of it; it goes to the point NO BS. After reading it you dont only will expand your knowledge u will find that some of the things u were doing were just not enough. 5 stars for this book. It will teach you how to fall in love again with the music and what you can do with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best DJ Book EVER!
Simply the BEST. If you're a DJ and don't own this book, you're probably a terrible DJ. BUY THYIS BOOK!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ha ha ha ha ha!!!
All I can say is that this is so ridiculous. I read this book at the library and I couldn't stop laughing. So DJs have talant? It takes years to master the 'art' of playing a record? Listen to me and listen well, you want respect, girls, and money? Let the losers be DJs. Musicians with talant do just that, make music, with instruments. Go buy a guitar.

This book had some elementary basics on sound levels and accoustics, but clubs have people to do that while your setting up your band, so what's the point?

5-0 out of 5 stars This book rocks!
I just recently started taking DJ classes, and this book has been tremendous help. Historically, the barriers to entry have been a bit high in the DJ field, often leaving beginners like myself wondering where to start: what equipment do I need? what are the fundamentals I have to work on? The book fills this gap, providing a comprehensive guide on equipment, techniques, online resources and the general nature of the industry in a very clear format. I've browsed through other books on this subject (a rather limited selection) and none of them come close in terms of breadth and quality.

The book hits on a lot of key points and has an encouraging tone, balanced out by a bit of sarcastic humor. For instance, it notes the likely frustrations from trying a new technique (yes, everyone stinks in the beginning), but this just requires practice, practice, practice. The book has also been right on the mark about how most people in the field, from experienced DJs to record store operators, are quite helpful. Even when I pass the beginner stage, it will surely be a useful reference well into the future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Fable on Leadership for New Technical Managers
Everyone who has worked with engineers has noticed how hard it is for people who are very good at this work to become effective managers. It's almost as though the skills that make a good engineer can get in the way of becoming a good manager. But when a company is ready to select a new engineering manager, who do they pick? Why, an outstanding engineer, of course!

Years ago, most of these new managers were thrown into the fray with little training or mentoring. Today, that seldom happens. Instead, training courses and mentoring are almost always available. Yet, despite having more help, many new engineering managers continue to fail.

Lost and Found is aimed at providing additional perspective and information to help great engineers become great engineering managers.

Yet many new engineering managers may not want to read a "fable" about doing their jobs better. I hope they will suspend their skepticism long enough to give this outstanding fable a chance to help them.

Business fables usually don't work for engineering managers. First, they don't talk about working on technical projects. Second, they are often so simple as to seem insulting to an educated professional. It's like being asked to read Alice in Wonderland in order to manage better. Third, the situations don't provide any "aha's" based on general experiences. Fourth, the directions are often limited to one way to get the job done.

Lost & Found overcomes all of those problems.

Larry Parks has all of the best and worst characteristics of new engineering managers . . . and receives training, feedback and mentoring that just don't strike him as relevant. But as his project spins increasingly out of control and behind schedule, he realizes that something has to give. His family and his boss are both disappointed in him. As a result, he's given a chance to take time off to get his thinking sorted out. During that time off, he begins to experience the consequences of all the worst parts of his own management style . . . and tries out better ways to do things that allow him to enjoy better results.

The lessons are summarized simply as a Leadership Credo of:

"My Team Needs to KNOW

1. Do I have a clear view of the future I am trying to create, and does my team share that view?

My Team Needs to GROW

2. Are my team members more valuable to each other, to the company, and to themselves today than they were a year ago?

My Team Needs to OWN

3. Do the people on my team perform like hired hands or as if they're partners in business with me?"

In the story, Larry comes back to the office and uses these principles to turn his project around and improve his career.

While all of this is happening, Larry's mentor (who could be poster boy for how not to manage -- using Theory X) sees his career crash and burn. The lesson isn't lost of Larry.

After the fable is over, the authors do a fine job of providing brief guidance on other methods of working with a team to apply these three principles.

I would be surprised if I will ever read a business fable as good as this one for its intended audience. I recommend it without reservation.

As I finished the book, I began to realize that most business books would be more helpful if the authors focused more narrowly on a particular type of reader . . . rather than trying to help everyone in the same way. I hope these authors will write more fables, and aim them at other specific audiences that need help making the transition into effective management.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Theory / Good Practice / Good Story
Since One-Minute Manager in 1983, embedding business advice into fictional narrative has become a pervasive formula. Unfortunately, the "plot" of such books too often consists only of a young protoge (surrogate for the reader) getting advice rom a wise mentor (surrogate for the writer).

Lost and Found is different. Its plot is multilayered and compelling, and its characters more than just one-dimensional mouthpieces for reader and writer. Like other Sussman/Deep offerings, Lost and Found has sound content, presented clearly and tightly. This book, written along with Alex Stiber, takes the Sussman/Deep canon in a fruitful new direction. I'll be recommending this book to clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost & Found
I very much enjoyed this book. Written in a "story" form, Lost & Found clearly illustrates core leadership values. From the beginning chapter, 'Why Me?' to the final entitled, 'Out of the Woods', the book's primary character, Larry Parks embarks upon a journey that many of us have either witnessed in others or have taken ourselves. Dr. Sussman and his co-authors have composed a classic that should be read by every individual in a position of leadership or who aspires to be a leader. I have purchased copies of Lost & Found for 12 others in my organization and have had rave reviews from everyone. Please do yourselves a favor and puchase this book; better yet purchase additional copies and give to your friends and colleagues.

5-0 out of 5 stars you can learn more

Book Description

In Life Without Limits, Bassett asks, "If you could have, do, and be anything right now, what would you ask for?" Eight out of ten people are unable to answer this simple question.

How about you? Do you know how to get what you want? Do you even know what you want? What do you see when you look in the mirror? A self-confident, radiant person who is living life to the fullest? Or do you see a frustrated, insecure, dissatisfied person who doesn't know how to change things? Bassett says, "In my work, I am continually amazed at the number of people who are personally, professionally, and financially frustrated. But the worst part is, if they could change things, they aren't sure how, or even what they would change." People stop dreaming, settling for a life that is neither satisfying nor rewarding because their fears and insecurities prevent them from seeing what they want in life, and how to get it. Acquiring happiness, wealth, or success on any level is difficult when you aren't clear about what you want and you don't have a plan. Before you know it, years pass by, and you're looking back with regrets.

"In my work over the past fourteen years, I have encountered two types of people. The first group is the "doers." They are the movers and the shakers. They plan their life and are strongly motivated. They are on a clear path, know exactly what they want, and they are willing to take the risks to get it. The second group is the "drifters." They drift through life with no real sense of direction, ending up frustrated. This can happen to people in the most prestigious occupations. The drifters have a hard time establishing a sense of true happiness, satisfaction, or security because they know they aren't where they "should be," but they don't know what to do about it.

Life Without Limits helps you clarify what you want in every area of your life. By using Bassett's powerful techniques you will change, therefore your life will change. Your thoughts are magnets attracting everything from the type of people you meet to the types of opportunities that come your way. Your thinking must be clear, distinct, and sharply defined. Your focused thoughts elicit emotion; your emotions ignite your actions and have a tremendous effect on the universal energy that surrounds you. You control your life. You control your destiny. And only you can take steps to change it. Life Without Limits helps you take back your power.

Life Without Limits is the complete guide to attaining abundance in every area of your life. It will help you to achieve satisfaction and fulfillment personally, professionally, and financially. Once you have defined what success means for you, you will clarify your dreams and start pursuing them. Opportunities will present themselves, new doors will open, and you will begin to live the life you were meant to live: a life without limits.

"Begin now to change the person you are into the person you know you have the potential to become." -- Lucinda Bassett

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucinda Bassett continues to amaze me!
I first saw Lucinda Bassett on Oprah about 10 years ago, when I was 18, and my life hasn't been the same since. Lucinda's techniques for dealing with daily life and stress have become second nature to me, so much so that I have difficulty remembering a time when Lucinda's insight wasn't a part of my life.

One would think that after having produced one of the most successful self-awareness and self-help programs of all time and having seen that program go on to be used by countless individuals, not to mention doctors and mental health organizations, Lucinda would rest on her laurels. But Lucinda hasn't - she never stops! She keeps growing and coming up with wonderful and inspiring ways to view life, difficult situations, and to cultivate self-esteem.

Perhaps the most striking thing about this book is the revelation by Lucinda that she, whose programs, books, and seminars have been effectively utilized by many clinical institutions and major corporations is always guided by her intuition. This stuck me as interesting because so often intuition is thought of as untrustworthy, irrational, and unreliable; yet Lucinda's work is consistent, rational, effective, and well respected by many established and reputable persons and institutions. Lucinda tells the reader that when you become more respectful of your intuition, or "gut feelings," you can often bring into your life a sense of synchronicity that you can then utilize to help gain your heart's desire - whether it be inner peace, a new car, a new job, or a more understanding relationship with family members. Thus, this book adds deeper insight and dimension to a topic that has always been present in Lucinda's work - spirituality.

Authors and speakers who are as knowledgeable as Lucinda can sometimes come across as being a little patronizing, a little better-than-though, but Lucinda almost comes across as being a friend. The information in this book can and does stand on its own, but Lucinda has a wonderful way of presenting the information. She's just one of those people who has a gift to make you feel like you know her. She comes across as very down-to-earth, humble, and caring.

I really like this book!

Perhaps the most striking thing about this book is the revelation by Lucinda that she, whose programs, books, and seminars have been effectively utilized by many clinical institutions and major corporations (McDonalds, Chrysler, AT&T), is always guided by her intuition. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a life saver!
This book has helped me to gain hope and courage to cope with all my fears and worries. Lucinda writes with such a great understanding and compassion. She herself had problems with panic and worry. Her positive thinking tips are easy to follow, I don't get lost in alot of psycho babble. It's as if she's holding your hand sitting right beside you cheering you on! I believe I can do anything I set my mind to after reading this book. I plan to buy copies for all my friends. God bless Lucinda for writing this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Has some great tips and amazing personal stories!
Ms. Bassett has some great advice for anyone who is really interested in over-coming an anxiety disorder and/or depression. She's a true believer in the idea that these disorders can be cured, or managed even with some good guidance and coaching in facing your fears and achieving your goals. The chapter on listening to your intuition is astounding! Read this book purly for that chapter. I have applied those techniques and they work so fabulously well, I'm truly amazed. Her own intuition is always in overdrive, so be prepared to be wowed by her. I would consider her to be the expert in following your "God" voice, as she describes it. She has saved peoples lives and her own business from total ruination by listening to her intuition, so she's a proven expert on that subject. Also, her real-life stories will bring you to tears and teach you a thing or two about how to handle life situations. I recommend further reading of Rhonda Britten's books to really tackle all the issues of fear and living out your dreams. But, Lucinda's book is a must-read!

Last Friday, I went on a six hour trip on a train in search of some answers to this question, ¡°How should I live my life?¡± During the six hours with this book I went though a most amazing experience; after the trip I realized that this book had given me clear goals and dreams and the courage to conquer my fears; I was no longer afraid of trivial things, and I stated to believe in myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Restatement of Napoleon Hill's Work on Success
The Twelve Universal Laws of Success is not explicitly derived from Napoleon Hill's popular works . . . but it is clearly an intellectual heir of that work. If you liked Mr. Hill's work, you will probably enjoy this book very much. If you do not know Mr. Hill's work, you could do worse than to begin with this book instead of Mr. Hill's books.

Although almost everyone admires Napoleon Hill's work on the requirements for being successful, most will agree that he was always somewhat opaque in describing what he had learned. His later books are clearer, but not crystal clear. For that reason, I'm always pleased when someone connects the dots better on the same subject. The Twelve Universal Laws of Success is such a book. I am very glad I read it. Mr. Herbert Harris does quite a remarkable job of combining the perspectives of physical science, psychology and different religions to provide a very clear view of how to lead a life directed towards worthy goals that you achieve. Those who are Christians will find strength in his use of many Biblical quotations.

As I read the twelve laws, I sometimes felt like I was being taken on a tour around a statue. By seeing more perspectives, I could understand the holism of the statue much better . . . or in this case, what is required for success. So don't be surprised at what will seem like a little redundancy in the rules. Some of them are really axioms of other rules . . . but ones that you might not have figured out on your own. For example, the law of change is an axiom of the law of thought.

The material is well organized. The book begins with much helpful background information, including how to study any new subject or book. Now, that's getting down to brass tacks! Each law then has its own chapter, and you will find chapter summaries and study guides at the end of each. If you apply yourself to the study guides, you benefit from the book will be enormous. That's one of the many improvements over Napoleon Hill in the book.

I also liked the way that Mr. Harris was careful to explain what his words and concepts mean. Success is "the continuous realization of the outcomes or results you desire." He also carefully describes the conscious, subconscious and superconscious minds.

The laws themselves are ones that most people will recognize from their own experiences and religious studies. Here are a few examples of the laws summarized (see pages 181-183 for the whole list):

The Universal Law of Thought ("You become what you think about most of the time.")

The Universal Law of Change ("You change your life by changing your thinking.")

The Universal Law of Relationships ("Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.").

I especially liked his advice for how to end your day. Ask yourself, "Did I do everything I could do today to make tomorrow the way I want it to be?" He encourages you to live each day so that you can earnestly answer, "Yes, I did everything I could, with all I had to do it with!"

Mr. Herbert suggests that this book will be of most help to those who are having fairly good results in their own lives . . . but need to fine-tune what they are doing. He also suggests the book for those who are just starting out on their own as young adults. Although he does not mention it, I also think this book could be a life saver for those whose lives have crashed and burned in some fundamental way . . . and want to clean up their act.

As I finished the book, I was again reminded of the value of setting and pursuing worthwhile goals for ourselves. We can each do great things . . . if only we focus on doing so!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is a systematic presentation of the principles/laws of success based upon the Bible. I have read most of the well known 'success' books available and this book is truly up there with the best. This book is highly underated. No where else will you find such a straight forward explanation of the laws of success.

4-0 out of 5 stars Engaging, book on finding and living your purpose.
This book is a 4 star find that people should add to their collection of motivational treasures. The author uses spiritual references that tie to each principal that is discussed. I especially found the sections on vision, purpose and goals useful. I would recommend it to anyone but I believe parents with children who are making decisions about their future education and careers will find the book invaluable because of the concepts, principals and strategies it gives for being successful not just for the short term on a material level but for the spiritual long run. Reading the chapters, following the action sections at the end of each chapter makes the book a hands-on resource for working one's plan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entrepreneurs Foundation Block
There are many books produced each year to assist those who have chosen to go their own way. The how to's of being in business for yourself are well documented. However it seems that the actual understanding of the laws that one "must" know to be successful are not as clearly defined. This book outlines those laws. Just as there are differences in the laws of the universe so are there in the laws of success. Mr. Harris has captured the essence of what one must know about themselves and their world to succeed

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for anyone serious about success.
This book is a well written book that gives anyone interested in learning about how to succeed a positive "track to run on". It is concise with no wasted words. Each sentence builds upon another, each paragraph draws you along to another truth. The National Black Business Trade Association has selected this as "Book of the Year" and required readingfor its membership of over 15,000 African American entrepreneurs and business owners. Anyone seeking to succeed in business or life should readthis book! Lee Green, Executive Director, National Black Business TradeAssociation. ... Read more

Did you hear about when Amazon accidentally uncovered the identities of some of the reviewers and it was discovered that a lot of Authors were giving their own books numerous 5 stars reviews? This book in my opinion is a classical example of that, the book has no structure,no organisation. The author blows his trumpet a lot about his farcical NFL career (who cares). It is truly an awful book on options and I would be willing to give my copy away for free.I would give it 0 stars if Amazon would have given me that option, buyer beware.

1-0 out of 5 stars Love me please .... honestly I am great
This book was a disappointment. Talk about an ego. All full of himself when he carried the water bucket for the Chicago Bears.

Seriously, there is no useful information in this book about option trading. There is no strategy that you can apply. I would give my book to charity but whats the point
