5-0 out of 5 stars The Foundation of Time Management
Mr. Lakein's book provides the foundational premise for anyone to locate their true purpose as well as the method in which to achieve what they desire. I've been reading books for many years on how to manage time and finally found the one all the others had taken concepts from and tried to improvise and improve upon, but they just managed to make it more difficult. This is the one to read if you desire to gain control of your life and define what you want to do with your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read, and down to the point.
This book was my first time management book. I've picked up "The Time Trap" by Alec Mackenzie after this reading, and in comparison, this book is much more thorough. The best part about this book I think is the simple idea of prioritizing your to do list. I have started to do this and found myself to be able to get more important things done. It also helps greatly with your concentration for the current task by stating to yourself that this is the most important task to do at the moment. Anyhow, great time management book for newbies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still using these principles 22 years later!
I first read Alan Lakein's book in 1982. I picked it up 10 years later and was amazed to see how many of the principles had become so much a part of my life I. I was living the book and hadn't even realized it until I picked it up again.

One of my favorite principles is to start working on something that's important to you, even if it's 15 minutes at a time. I've done this. Scheduled something I didn't think I had time to do for 15 minutes a week. I certainly could do that. Well, when it's something that I really want, I find the momentum builds and I end up finding the time to do what I need and being really happy that I did.

This book has helped me get in touch with what's really important to me and has helped me live a life I truly value.

Thank you Alan Lakein!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Plan & priortize.
This book heavily emphasizes planning and prioritizing and also offers tips on how to stave off procrastination. There are a few anecdotes about business managers and housewives that, for me, just fill pages, but overall, this is a clearly-written, useful book that offers effective techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up
Good because Lakein makes accommodation for human nature, and works with it and around it, vs. some such books that assume everyone has the self-discipline of a navy seal. He helps procrastinators and the lazy, as well as those who aren't these things but want to improve. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and fun to read -- don't miss this one
I've always been a little skeptical of the Dummies books but when I received Etiquette for Dummies as a gift I couldn't help but get caught up in it immediately. The author takes a refreshing look at how we all get along in society (the good, the bad AND the ugly!) and gives us insightful yet friendly advice on communicating better with each other on a daily basis. This is a must read for everyone, even if you think your etiquette is already up to snuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Gift
This book is great! I was given a copy as a gift - I had never read a "Dummies" book and wasn't sure what it was all about. After reading it, I gave copies of it to all five of my children, age 19 - 27, for Christmas. The information is timely, appropriate, and presented in a "non-preachy" manner. Anyone who meets with clients, has interviews or wants to feel comfortable in social situations needs to read "Etiquette for Dummies".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference volume
I found this book both a useful tool and an easy read.

I originally purchased this book to resolve some light hearted family disagreements regarding such items as; the correct "title" of a married woman in the 21st century or the correct method of setting the formal table for Thanksgiving dinner. I ended up reading the book cover to cover. The author has done an excellent job of making this potentially dry topic, fun and enjoyable.

I particularly enjoyed the chapters on etiquette as it relates to new technology such as; cell phones, call waiting, and e-mail. None of these things were around when I originally learned "Manners 101". It was useful to review the "do's and don'ts" of modern technology.

An excellent purchase and I would recommend it to others.

2-0 out of 5 stars Female biased, old fashioned "reference guide"
I bought this book because I experienced a form of arrested development while growing up in an over-zealous fundamentalist Christian family that basically made me believe it to be a sin to have any non-Christian friends--therefore, I had no friends and I lived in my bedroom, and as a result I developed no social skills until I became an adult. I had a lot of catching up to do, and I had hoped this book would provide some common sense to an ignorant fool like myself.

I was disappointed in the book. The book delves into many categories of social activity and specifies in an ordered, classroom textbook fashion what should/shouldn't be done, as opposed to describing the why's and the varying perspectives of given scenarios.

As founder and owner of Etiquette Survival, Inc., Fox has a lot of wisdom to share, but unfortunately a lot of it is rather old-fashioned and sometimes biased toward the female perspective. For example, I did not appreciate the fact that there were 19 points on how to be a gentleman and only three or four points for how to be a lady, including very detailed instructions for women to "allow men to be gentlemen", as though there was no other responsibility for women in the 21st century for women to be ladies. Obviously I am not a woman and do not need advice on being a lady, I was nonetheless offended by such bias. I came across this section and shut the book permanently ever since.

I believe any book on etiquitte should be authored/edited by at least two men and women (not all men or all women).

4-0 out of 5 stars Never Get Caught Doing The Wrong Thing!
I picked up this book prepared to learn nothing new. Boy was I surprised! This is a well written, concise primer that can be read straight through (as I did, again to my surprise) or dipped into as specific needs arise. Getting what you want out of business dinners, greeting new business acquaintances, dressing for 'semi-casual' events, picking up the right knife and fork at a formal dinner. All the unspoken signals that say you know what you're doing - they're all here! ... Read more

By melding love, science, and religion into a primer on personalgrowth, M. Scott Peck launched his highly successful writing and lecturing career withthis book. Even to this day, Peck remains at the forefront of spiritualpsychology as a result of The Road Less Traveled. In the era of I'm OK, You're OK, Peck was courageousenough to suggest that "life is difficult"and personal growth is a "complex, arduous and lifelong task." His willingnessto expose his own life stories as well as to share the intimate stories of hisanonymous therapy clients creates a compelling and heartfelt narrative. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible for modern living
I am writing this review 15 years after reading the book, and living my way through it. This book is a gem, i would not call it self help or even psychology - it is a 'from the heart' message from the author on love, responsibility and life. I felt the message when i read it first and vowed to 'avoid' all the mistakes with regards to love and discipline that the author describes. But there is no shortcut, really. This book has to be lived through, not understood. One or two things for the author (or anyone plannign to write on these lines) - your writing reaches all over, i know people in India who have loved this book and learnt from it (despite the fact that very little psycho therapy is available there), also know therapists who have 'read' it and done nothing else. So it pays to pay attention to the global nature of the audience. Secondly, while Peck does exalt people who have dared to explore themselves in therapy he does mention a line that self esteem, if not realized in childhood is an upward journey, often 'unsuccesful'. He might have meant it in a bigger context (statistical, perhaps) but the comment is highly discouraging to those of us who take the 'upward journey' and yes, we are successful sometimes.

5-0 out of 5 stars An answer for the problems of today.
Ever wonder why, when you think you are in the greatest relationship of your life, it suddenly ends? Or how about the reason you can't seem to get your work done and your falling behind in all aspects of your life. "The Road Less Traveled; A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth" by M. Scott Peck, M.D. could be the answer for you. M. Scott Peck wrote a book using the experiences of his patients and some of his own and tried to relate them to the problems of everyday people in the real world. In the first section of his book he talks about discipline, self-gratification, character disorders, responsibility, and depression. He explains that all of these are healthy and the only way to get beyond them so they do not become a problem is to admit that you have a problem. Because if we ignore them they will only cause more pain and suffering. In section number two, Peck talks about love, falling in love, and falling out of love. He teaches us how to recognize true compatibility, how to distinguish dependency from love, and how to become one's own person while in a relationship. This book is one that should be read by anyone who has questions about their life. It can show you how to take control of your life so that you can experience it to the fullest. No more sitting and wondering why things are happening to you. It is like having your own psychaitrist in the palm of your hand, just a whole lot cheaper!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good ending
I could have done without the first section of this book (about the first 90 pages). The author essentially informs the reader that his/her lack of proper and appropriate parenting is the root of any and all of is/her adult troubles. The other thing that I dislike is the author's arrogance. At one point he even says that according to his definition he is practicing psychotherapy all the time and therefore feels it ok to bend and break ethical guidelines. Professionals are supposed to follow a code of ethics...that is what separates professions from other jobs. Another annoyance is the author's apparent need to show off his extensive vocabulary. Yeah, that's great that you went to school for 8 years but how gives a f*ck if you know words that are not commonly used.

Having said that...The latter parts of this book are amazing!! I especially like the ending dealing with the subject of grace. The author presents practical knowledge, with examples, of how grace can work in everyday living. I also enjoyed the section on love, in which the author points to the illusion of romantic love and explains how 'falling in love' is nothing more than a fantasy that inevitably fades away. The structure of the book is perfect, an English professor would love it. Mr. Peck states and supports his opinions very clearly and for the most part, he presents opposing points of view as well.

If you can get past the wordiness and the first 90 pages, then you will find some very useful and encouraging information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charting a path...
I first read M. Scott Peck's 'The Road Less Travelled' over 20 years ago, but it is a text to which I return again and again, as Peck's insights and observations remain a constant source of inspiration and guidance in my life. It still finds a ready home in the hands of therapists, counselors, ministers, teachers, career planners, and others as part of their resources, and is not out of place in the home of anyone who cares about the directions of her or his life.

Peck is a clinical psychiatrist - the material for this book came largely from his experiences with clients and others, seeing what worked and what didn't, what was missing and what was mis-understood. Often cases involved psychotherapy (talk therapy), but the processes here are not confined to therapists' offices. The same kinds of problem solving, processing and relationship building that takes place in psychotherapy can be used as life-long tools.

Peck resists labels such as Freudian and Jungian; he doesn't look for, nor does he offer, quick fixes or the psychotherapeutic variety of the get-rich-quick schemes. This book is not a therapy manual, but rather a guide to spiritual growth that incorporates therapeutic and psychological principles. Peck echoes the sentiments of many spiritual directors and leaders through the millennia that spiritual and personal growth are long journeys, not short leaps. It involves dedication and intention, and a willingness to accept risk and change.

Perhaps it is ironic that, given this, the first topic Peck focuses upon is Discipline. However, without discipline, change can go unchecked and uncharted, growth can become problematic, and the human soul becomes susceptible to a host of difficulties. Dedication and application to problem-solving and long-term building (whether it be of retirement funds or of one's own spirit) requires a disciplined approach that recognises that life is difficulty (the first of Buddha's Four Noble Truths, cited by Peck), gratification sometimes needs to be delayed for greater goods, and reality needs to be approached and dealt with responsibly.

Peck calls here for a life to be totally dedicated to the truth. This is hard, because we as human beings are so accustomed to rationalisation and reinterpretation. This kind of dedication also requires a balance in life, and an ability to be flexible as the truths of our lives change - few of us are in possession of timeless and eternal truths governing every aspect of our lives, and often those who feel they are end up disappointed in the end. The continuing creativity of God in our lives requires flexibility, but this is best achieved in a disciplined and balanced context.

Peck then turns to love, a mysterious thing even in the best of times. He identifies some of the myths of 'falling in love' and romantic love that our culture through various means idealises, leading to great dissatisfaction when we do not achieve the desired feelings or situations. Peck makes the assertion that love is not really a feeling, but rather an action or activity, that involves a lot of risk-taking (Peck talks about risks of independence, of commitment, of confrontation, and of loss). True love requires discipline and recognition of the needs of the self and others.

The final two sections of the text deal with aspects of religion on the spiritual and psychological development of persons. The first section looks at religion and growth processes. He does a short survey of some attitudes toward religions and denominations, as well as a look at how the modern scientific mindset colours the worldview of modern people, particularly with ideas of verification and skepticism. Some psychologists and theorists have wondered if religion were mass delusions, mass psychosis, or some other kind of sickness. Peck uses interesting extended case studies here to examine the role of various aspects of religion in the developmental lives of several people. Peck asks the question, 'Is belief in God a psychopathology?' In some aspects, and for some people, the way they approach and 'use' religion, the answer may well be yes. However, Peck also takes the psychotherapeutic community to task for often being too narrow or too dismissive of the value of religious sentiment and institutions in the lives of their charges.

The final section looks at the role of grace in the spiritual growth process. Grace is another mysterious force, like love, that is difficult to pin down and explain. It is also something uncontrollable. Why do some with artistic talent end up being successful and celebrated, and others not? Why do some use their talent, when others don't? In cases of ultimate despair, Peck makes the observation that while it is often clear why some people commit suicide, it is not often clear why others in the same situations don't. Some of this has to do with the unconscious mind that guides us, and some of it has to do with the miracle of serendipity, as Peck describes it.

Peck describes in some detail his concept of what grace is and how it works, in very general terms that relate to no denomination or religion in particular, but has wide applicability. He talks both about resistance to grace and the welcoming of grace. Grace is not easy, and often comes with responsibilities (Bonhoeffer talks about cheap grace; the requirements of grace are noted through scriptures of many religions). Welcoming grace welcomes often more than we bargained for, but also often more than we hoped.

In his afterword, Peck discusses the difficulties of writing in an organised and linear fashion about something so fundamentally disorganised as spiritual growth and therapeutic processes. He also talks about the need for finding competent help when required - ability is not measured by degrees, he states (something true in many professions). This is useful for those seeking a first therapeutic relationship, or needing a change.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true classic that stands the test of time!
When I first read this book ten years ago, I was too young, immature, and inexperienced with life that I did not think much of it and didn't understand why so many people liked it. I reread this book a couple of weeks ago and it finally hit me! I finally see the many things going on around me much clearer. I then read "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato and things became even more clear (especially things about my relationships). I highly recommend both of these books to people who have reached a certain maturity level in mid-late adulthood. If you encounter them at he right stage, they might initiate a major transformation in your emotional and spiritual growth process. Happy reading! ... Read more

Book Description

Who is Heraclitus, and what is he whacking, you ask? Heraclitus was an ancient Greek philosopher, widely considered the world's first creativity teacher. The deck has 32 cards, each containing a "whack," or eye-opening exercise based on the epigrams of Heraclitus. They will spur creative thinking and allow you to look at a problem from a fresh perspective. Created by Roger von Oech, author of the best-selling book, A Whack on the Side of the Head and the Creative Whack Pack. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, It's True...You Really Can be More Creative
This book should be read in combination with A Kick in the Seat of the Pants...and preferably read first. Just a suggestion. Von Oech demonstrates in his thinking and in his writing the same principles he advocates so eloquently. In Whack, first published in 1983, he identifies ten "locks" which limit (if not preclude) creative thinking:

The Right Answer

That's Not Logical

Follow the Rules

Be Practical

Play Is Frivolous

That's Not My Area

Avoid Ambiguity

Don't Be Foolish

To Err Is Wrong

I'm Not Creative

How does each limit (if not preclude) creative thinking? How can each be "unlocked"? To what extent are these barriers interdependent? Von Oech devotes a separate chapter to each of the ten, answering these and other questions while providing various exercises in support of his explanations.

Whack will be immensely valuable to executives in any organization which needs a culture within which to generate and then nourish fresh ideas and new perspectives. The same is true of all self-employed people (especially independent consultants) whose customers or clients expect them to address the same need. Finally, I think that school, college, and university classroom teachers can devise all manner of appropriate applications of von Oech's ideas. When you listen to Richard Feyman's lectures on physics (now available on audio cassettes), you suspect that he has read all of von Oech's books. He probably didn't. Nonetheless, he and von Oech are kindred spirits.

In addition to von Oech's A Kick in the Seat of the Pants, there are other excellent books also worthy of your consideration. They include those written by Edward de Bono, Guy Claxton, Michael Michalko, and Joey Reiman.

4-0 out of 5 stars Who Moved My Cheese Before Who Moved My Cheese
Roger von Oech takes a very creative look at the 10 mental locks that keep us from being creative. Using a highly entertaining style, fun illustrations, anecdotes, quotations and puzzles, he tries to open the 10 mental locks:

1. The Right Answer
2. That's Not Logical
3. Follow the Rules
4. Be Practical
5. Avoid Ambiguity
6. To Err is Wrong
7. Play is Frivolous
8. That's Not My Area
9. Don't Be Foolish
10. I'm Not Creative

I also recommend his sequel - A Kick in the Seat of the Pants.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
After reading the rave reviews, I expected a much better book. It's okay, but, basically, goes over the same old stuff other books do. Nothing new. It's kinda of read one you've read them all.

4-0 out of 5 stars a healthy dose of creativity
There are some self-help books which are enjoyable to read, but may not be entirely beneficial. A Whack on the Side of the Head falls close to this. What it offers isn't really groundbreaking. Heck, I can sum it up like this: "do something different when faced with a problem." But sometimes we need to be reminded of what seems obvious because we, as society, have come to ignore the obvious. So this 150 page reassurance isn't a bad thing to look through. Like I said, it was enjoyable to read because of the way it was written. It had a lot of spelling errors, though, and the author doesn't exactly treat other's quotes right. Not to mention a plethora of pictures so wacky, they're disturbing. But for those who are struggling with ideas as of late, give it a whirl.

5-0 out of 5 stars It opened my mind in a big way
My thinking had become stale in the past six months, and I was unable to think of fresh approaches to some pressing work problems. I mentioned this to my sister, and she lent me her dog-earred copy of Whack. I loved the author's breezy style and practical ideas. I have since bought two more copies, one for myself and another for a friend at work. I recommend Whack as a good way to open your thinking. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Read It Now, Make It Happen.
Write It Down, Make It Happen is a beautiful book about the power of writing. I have been a journal writer from the time I was eight years old. It is amazing to me to realize how that writing was really training me for my current profession. My ability to express myself completely and articulately has opened up many doors to both professional and personal fulfillment. Professionally I know that I get invited to speak at events and work on projects that require clean, crisp thought.

Personally, writing has enabled me to process challenges and learn from my experiences and mistakes. Until last year, I wrote about the present: what's going on, how I feel in the past-present. Last year, under much divine intervention, I began writing present-future. I began actually visualizing the life that I wanted on paper. Rather than writing current facts and states of mind-I articulated a vision of what I wanted and how I wanted to feel. Write It Down, Make It Happen may be a wonderful tool for you to begin this same process. Writing works for me. It may not work for you. I invite you to experiment with it and discover new aspects of "who you are." This book can help you do this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed!
I've read quite a few self-improvement books and none of them really gave me what I was looking for. This one is very interactive and makes sense in a simple way. There are many writing exercises from goal-setting to writing short stories that tap into your subconscious mind, revealing your true heart's desires. I find her techniques not only brilliant but quite effective. After running the gamut with self-help books, this one is quite refreshing, helpful, and it works! If you're looking for change and you're not able to make it happen, you should read this book and participate in all the exercises. You'll be amazed at how powerful her seemingly simple techniques really are!

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking Matters Into your Own Hands
Are you telling me that writing down positive thoughts, aspirations, expectations and dreams will magically make them come true? To tell you the truth, this business of turning dreams into realities by such effortless an act like writing them down, certainly appeals to me.

Her system consists in clearing goals, thus helping to overcome pessimism, negativity, fears, doubts, and low self esteem. Such negative states of mind will prevent the person from takings risks, going for it, and/or reaching his/her more cherished dreams. The idea is to write down, sometimes in detail, what you want to accomplish, what you need, and what you would like to achieve.

The fact that we make our own reality, as Seth declares through Jane Roberts, has been proved by Klauser in this book with real life success stories of lives turned around by the simple fact of thinking positive, optimistically, expecting the best and then writing it down, and explaining why.

The mind is a powerful thing; actually Mind is the only universal power. All our human experiences are just the externalization of our conscious and subconscious ideas, likes, dislikes and beliefs. Once we increase our confidence by believing something good and pleasant is going to happen to us we set in motion a commanding mental drive toward that potential beneficial reality.

The idea is to claim your rights in every situation, to understand you have the right to the best, and to keep from listening to negativity, pessimism, low self esteem and/or bad expectations. In many instances what seems impossible happens after the individual refuses to give up his/her positive drive based on a written list of almost unattainable dreams.

The good thing regarding this system is that it works. It has been proved by many people that positive thinking and good expectations when put down in paper and ink have the power of sooner or later becoming a real thing.

The author also, according to what she implies, hastens the crystallization of her dreams, by applying visualizations and mental imagery to her list. I, for instance, have for many years been a practitioner of constructive thinking, however with these techniques I feel like a kid in a candy store.

2-0 out of 5 stars Uncertain of what it wants it wants to say...
I must say that this book was, at times, an engaging read. But it was also all over the map, and frequently contradictory. I agree with Klausner that: a journal can be a great place to "park one's worries;" writing down one's fears could help someone acknowledge and face them; that writing about the outcomes you want can help you stay focused, etc. Then she goes and ruins it by saying all sorts of fluffy, ridiculous things, and recounting stories that I consider happy coincidences rather than direct results of writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Writing Goals and Getting What You Want--It Really Works!
I couldn't put this book down. From cover to cover in two sessions-- I read, did the written exercises, and visualized the outcome. Yes, Henriette's method works without question and I love the way she writes. She's amazing. The author takes what other famous writers like Napoleon Hill, Claude M. Bristol, and Barbara Sher have written and brings it to the next level with illustrations from real people who have experienced wonderful outcomes from goals and intentions they have written. She knows her stuff and delivers in a clear, concise format. I can't wait to read her latest book, With Pen In Hand. ... Read more

Hardball, first published in 1988, is like a modern version of Machiavelli's The Prince, only much more richly illustrated, with anecdotes drawn from talk-show host Chris Matthews's stint as a congressional staffer (where he worked for, among others, renowned Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill). Discussing such basic principles as "It's not who you know; it's who you get to know" and "Don't get mad, don't get even--get ahead," Matthews not only dishes out choice Washington insider info, he has over the years inspired many readers to apply his principles for political success to their own professional lives. ... What a book! I wasn't crazy about Chris Matthews before reading the book, but now who cares? I think it would be hard to find another book so packed with meaningful tips on how to play the political game and excellent examples of people using those strategies in brilliant ways. But this is definitely not a book only for those into politics. Although nearly all the examples are political in nature, the point is well made that this is information we can all use in our daily interactions with people. Read this more than once, highlight it, cherish it. Share it with your friends, but keep it from your enemies! What a book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars How To Win Friends and Influence People - - Hardball style !
This book has often been described as Machiavelli for the '90s and beyond. One might even joke the cynical side of Dale Carnegie's "How To Win Friend's and Influence People" - - A brilliant story teller, Chris Matthews has written a book that to this day if actually read transcends his controversial personality and is an indepth study of how people get ahead... its not just a book for politicians - - everyone should read it - - whether viewed as a study of greed, or a guide to how to get ahead in life, Matthews makes some brilliant observations - - learned from a wide variety of political personae on all sides of the ideological coin, and proving the one thing that every political ideologue in Washington has in common - - a modus of operendi relating to their success based on their ability to pull people's strings. - - In essence, Hardball is a study of just this - - the art of pulling people's strings by understanding what makes them tick, incuring favor, indebting them to you (often by having *them* do *you* favor !) and playing by certain rules. - - People politics are key to the game of life in any field (whether or not you like the game.)

On his TV show, Chris Matthews comes across as a cranky anti-intellectual motor mouth - - one who can have 7 guests, and not a single one will get a word in likewise... The myth of Chris Matthews is best characterized by SNL's Darell Hammond's routine where he's always cutting people off with that hillarious, "Yeah... yeah... yeah... yeah.. shut up !"
In fact, it was through SNL that I actually began tuning into Chris's show - - and I actually took a liking to him... Rather than finding him to be "anti-intellectual", I found him "anti-rhetoric" - - On the surface it sounds like he's hostile, rude and won't let his guests get in a word likewise, but if you listen in closely, what he does is not allow his guests (who are ALL in the P.R. game some way or another) to lay on their carefully rehearsed soundbits... He listens when they shoot straight, but all hell breaks lose when they start to launch into the same diatribe that they delivered on "Meet The Press" - - when he questions them, rather than eliciting the rhetoric talk show hosts are expected to do, he often lays their own rhetoric on them and cuts them off when they go for their carefully rehearsed speeches. - - After reading this book, it seems clear that Chris Matthews isn't Darell Hammond's cranky old big mouth... the truth is, he knows the game and is having fun throwing side pitches - - in reality, few will fluster or break down and cry (most simply resort to doing little other than repeating themselves over an over), but I think being able to outmouth any powerhouse with a big ceeeeeeegar is somewhat of a fete in itself.

Incidentally, despite the rumors, its hillarious to find out that he was actuall Tip O'Neil's right hand man, and practically learned the game from the old Democratic sage of Capitol Hill ! ! !

Long after Chris's stint as a popular cable TV show talk show host is forgotten, this book will be mandatory reading at high schools, colleges and in the game of life (of course, played hardball style !)

5-0 out of 5 stars Political Must Have
I was given this when I moved to Washington to work for a U.S. Senator by a friend who had worked in Washington for a few years. It is a must read if you have any interest in politics, even if you don't this is a good read and good knowledge for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars How politics is really played
In his book Hardball author Chris Matthews explains the basics of how politics is played in America. Chris Matthews goes through each principal or technique explains it and gives some examples of how it was used. Matthews uses examples of LBJ, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter and others. The book is a quick and easy read yet is one the best books I have ever read about practical politics. Hardball is broken up into four sections each dealing with a specific theme in which certain principals and techniques are discussed and demonstrated.
The first section of the book is called 'Alliances.' In alliances are the first four chapters of the book. Matthews explains the four concepts of this section of the book using examples of LBJ, Tip O'Neil, Ronald Reagan and others. This chapter examines how to develop alliances, how to keep alliances, who alliances should be made with, and the benefits of alliances with the right people.
The second section of the book is called 'Enemies.' Three chapters are in this section of the book. Matthews uses a number of people from this section to illustrate his points. Matthews uses a very interesting story about revenge to illustrate one of his points. This section of the book explains the technique and importance of incorporating some of your enemies into your team, why it is a waste of time to try to get even with those who wrong you, and an important lesson of how people really react to negative campaigning.
The third section of the book is called 'Deals.' There are two chapters in this section of the book. One of Matthews's key points is illustrated with an interesting story about Winston Churchill. This section of the book shows the importance of keeping quite sometimes and how you can get what you want if you agree with the principal of your opponent's argument.
The forth and last section of the book is called 'Reputations.' There are five chapters in this section. Matthews shows the how to establish and keep a reputation. This section shows that looking directly at your own problem will often make that problem go away, how things are defined often decides who is hurt and who isn't, you must always be wary of members of the media, how to use peoples reputations against them and how to cultivate a reputation most helpful to yourself, and how to position yourself in the most advantages position.
This book is a very good and quick read. This makes it easy for people who don't follow politics to understand what really is happening in Washington and when candidates hit the campaign trail.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Hardball' is an updated version of 'The Prince'
Whether you want to apply the techniques in this book to business, the bedroom, or the boardroom really doesn't matter. The soundness of them makes them applicable across all of life's battlefields. Like Machiavelli 500 years before him, Mathews reveals through examples like Ronald Reagan, Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy how to get, keep and wield power. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend
The truths in this book seem so obvious when you read it, yet it's the opposite of what's been taught and praciticed for so many years. Don't waste time trying to perfect what you don't do well, you'll never make a weakness into a strength. Find out what you do well and become so good at it that what you don't do well won't matter. Unfortunately, I recognized all too well all of the clues that indicate operating in a weakness rather than a strength. The good news is that I can stop trying to perfect my weaknesses and start enjoying my strengths. A must read for managers, coaches, career counselors and especially young people trying to figure out what it is they want to do with their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide for success
Donald Clifton and Paula Nelson tap an important principle: Focus on strength and manage weakness. They offer a step by step process to identify personal and corporate strengths and discuss how doing more of what you do well launches you into super achievement mode. This is a quick and excellent read for anyone interested in personal or business success.

Another book that takes a more analytical approach to the principles outlined in this book is "The 80/20 Principle" by Richard Koch. Reading both books together will convince you beyond any doubt that there is power and purpose to the success foundations found in these pages.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Soar" Bores
A coemployee recommended this book, because quite frankly, I am a heavy-handed manager who sqaushes my employees' strengths like cockroaches, while demanding they get better at what they are incompentent at. As simple as it is, I have always thought "The Little Engine That Could" taught the essence of success. Now, after reading "Soar With Your Strengths", I'm sure 'Little Engine' teaches the essence of success. Yeah, let's just blame everyone else for what we stink at and make ourselves feel better by only doing the couple things we're good at. This does happen to be real life, and the losers will be the commune hippies who toke doob and tell each other just how strong they are. Well, you weaklings just keep on talking to yourself in the mirror, as the rest of the world passes you by.

3-0 out of 5 stars An early effort on Strengths-based organizations...
Donald O. Clifton is more recently the co-author of "Now Discover your Strengths." Soar with your strengths is obviously an earlier version of that book without the web-based testing or defined "themes". "Soar" has the stories and suggestions behind the data found in "Now Discover". Nothing new here, but the stories may help those who struggle with the concepts in "Now Discover". I particularly liked the rabbit story at the beginning (which I empathized with) and the suggestions at the end of the book about imagining your goals and dreams.

Again, nothing new here, but some really nice illustrations of material found in other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humanistic
This book has revolutionized my coaching practice and career counseling. The authors' theory of concentrating on your strengths and what you were meant to do makes perfect sense, now that they've said it. It's one of those books where you'll read it and say, "I knew that!" An obvious no-brainer for the young adult starting a career, I've found it exceptionally helpful for people in mid-life transition. Yes, it would've been good to have read it earlier, but at mid-life you've discovered through experience what does and doesn't work for you. This motivates change, and the changes you'll make after having read this, can be drastic. I find many mid-life clients unsatisfied with their work, yet unsure what to do about it, because they've come to know only their weaknesses. They yearn to do what they love, but aren't sure how to shape that. This book and the StrengthFinder (tm) profile jump-start the quest. I call this "humanistic," because once you know your strengths and are living them (and this applies to personal life as well as professional life), you soar. It's "deeply soul-satisfying," "a relief," and "the best thing I ever did," to quote some of my clients. ... Read more

    Book Description

    Booklist

In this era of entrepreneurialism, Atlanta freelancer Peter Bowerman shows those timid (but talented) souls how almost anyone can forge ahead as an independent writer. His advice is good, couched in brassy prose that is easy to read. He anticipates every conceivable question and issue, including typical charges, marketing oneself, types of available work, and dealing with deadbeats. There are great common-sense tips, too, in the psychology of handling clients who think they’re writers, those with limited budgets, and others demanding creativity. Personal anecdotes make the life of the freelancer real; the author includes samples of cold-calling scripts, thank-you notes, and a story or three about starting a writers’ group and partnering with other professionals.

    Book Description

Dream of being a well-paid freelance writer? Long to carve out an enviable lifestyle with plenty of freedom, flexibility AND healthy income? But wait a minute…aren’t the words "starving" and "writer" forever joined at the hip? Not anymore.

How about a writing direction with plenty of work, strong and growing demand for good writers, hourly rates of $50-100+ ($60-75 average) and where all time is billed? No flat fees with vast, open-ended commitments of time. Translation? Less time working to pay bills and more time pursuing your writing passions.

We’re talking about freelance commercial writing – writing for business entities, large and small – the subject of The Well-Fed Writer, and quite possibly the answer for all aspiring writers who want to turn their love of writing into their living. The book was a triple-book-club-selection (Book-of-the-Month, Quality Paperback Book and Writer’s Digest) and earned several prestigious awards in 2001:

    1) Second place in the ForeWord magazine Book of the Year Awards (Career Category)

    2) Honorable Mention in the Writer’s Digest magazine National Self-Published Book Awards

    3) Finalist in the Publisher’s Marketing Association Ben Franklin Awards (Best First Book).

Why commercial writing? In the past decade, two huge trends have sculpted the corporate American landscape: downsizing and outsourcing. Corporations are doing more with less: fewer people, less resources and smaller budgets. The workload is growing – especially with the exploding Internet – and many organizations rely heavily on freelancers to help them handle it.

Why do corporations hire freelancers? For good solid economic and creative reasons. With a freelancer, corporations don’t have to pay salary, benefits, and vacation time. But they will pay a freelancer $60-80 (average) for their time. In addition, they pay only what they need when they need it. And with a network of freelancers, they get a broad spectrum of fresh talent (hard to get with in-house staff writers used to writing about the same topics day after day) which they can form-fit to their specific writing needs.

What’s "commercial writing"? Marketing brochures, ad copy, newsletters, direct mail campaigns, video/CD-ROM scripting, speeches, sales sheets, proposals, web content, and so much more.

Veteran commercial freelancer Bob Bly, known as the freelance writing "guru" for his 35+ writing titles, says of commercial freelancing: "I know of no other arena of writing so lucrative yet so easy to get started in."

The Well-Fed Writer will take you step-by-detailed-step through, indeed, everything you need to know to quickly get your share of this exciting and highly lucrative arena of freelancing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete and informative
In "The Well-Fed Writer" Peter Bowerman discloses the techniques of breaking into freelance commercial writing. Why would this interest you if you plan to be the next star on the fiction novel scene? Because it would be nice to eat while you are writing that novel. On the other hand, if you just want to change occupations, want a writer's lifestyle or just want to make some money doing something you love, then this is still a viable direction to take.

This is one of the most thorough books on writing for corporate America that I have ever seen. It includes such practical information as what type of writing you can get, approximate price ranges, how to go about locating companies that need writing outsourced, marketing scripts, etc. It is a complete step-by-step guide that takes you through a repeatable process to becoming recognized as a commercial writer and on your way to a career in writing.

While established writers may gain some additional valuable insights, this book is strongly focused on the new writer trying to get established. A highly recommended book for anyone wanting to start making a living in freelance writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great perspective, but not the whole picture
I love this book. Well-written, fun to read. However, I was hoping for more nuts-and-bolts coverage of the "official" side of freelancing--i.e. tax advice, the best way to legally structure the biz, etc. If you're not careful, you as a freelance writer can get hammered pretty hard on taxes. If you're looking for something that will help with the transition from having an interest in a writing business to actually having a (legitimate) writing business, you'll come up short with this book.

One reviewer mentioned that Bowerman was in a different financial landscape from the one we're in today, which is definitely valid. However, one of the excellent points he does make is that you can succeed no matter what the economic climate, and that you shouldn't stress over vague notions of "the economy". I find myself going back to this book again and again simply for the fact that it's a fantastic pep talk for anyone looking to take the big leap.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Regurgitation of Bly's stuff
This book was mainly a dumbed down, regurgitation of Bob Bly's "Secrets of a Freelance Writer" and other books. I guess if you're insecure about your writing abilities, or don't have a clue where to start (which Bly can help with too) this book might help, because the author comes across as a regular guy and etc. but there is nothing of substance here that you won't find in Bly's book. Maybe a LOT more of the author's day, the author's thoughts, etc. etc. Bly is more professional and detailed about the business, HOW to write copy, what you can reasonably expect to earn and much much more. Go right to the source of this information and buy "Secrets".

5-0 out of 5 stars The Well-Fed Writer Helps Float Your Boat
What I like most about this book, other than the wonderfully fresh and casual tone, is that it helps readers decide if they want to be a freelance commercial writer, not just if they can be. Lots of people can write well. (Lots more can't.) Of those people that write well, some have a creative flair well suited to commercial writing, and some don't. Of those that have the flair, some are cut out to be freelance writers and some aren't. By describing what you can expect to write, the types of people you will be working with, the challenges you will face, and a typical "day in the life" of a freelance commercial writer, this book gives you a pretty good idea of whether this career is for you, and whether you are for it.

The author weaves personal stories into practical, effective, and specific ideas on how to organize, market, and motivate yourself. Nearly every aspect of the business is covered. You still need the right abilities, aptitude, and attitude, but if you've got all that, reading this book can definitely help get your boat out of dry dock, into the water, and floating. How far you sail is up to you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Who IS this guy?
I was interested in buying this book (it looked the part on first glance -- that's why I gave it three stars), but wanted more information about the author first. So I "Googled" him. The first entry I came across in "Google Groups" was a spam site with a "get rich quick"-type post from a Peter Bowerman. His address seemed to be the same as that of the publisher of "The Well-Fed Writer."

If this is the same person, it sure diminished his credibility with me.

Perhaps Mr. Bowerman would care to respond? ... Read more

This truly the ultimate goals program. I have tried many other gaols type programs, nothing has worked as well as the advice herein by Brian Tracy.

1-0 out of 5 stars This review is for the audiobook
Most of the content is great, albeit Mr. Tracy seems to have a hyper-ambition about how much money one earns. Unfortunately, I had a hard time listening to Mr. Tracy's delivery of the material; it is very monotone and dry. If he could add some humor and excitement into his delivery, listening to the audiobook would be a much more pleasurable experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Maybe 4.5 - Worth the Read
Overall this is an outstanding little read. The book is a useful tool for those who are already questioners but who could hone their skills, and especially for those who plod through life without having yet developed the knack for learning, and persuading, and encouraging, and directing, and inspiring, through questions.

Very minor quibbles only. First, the author seems not to know what a leading question is. To a lawyer, a leading question can be the most explosive tool to reveal weak positions and to challenge the credibility of underlying conconlusions. Leeds does mention what she describes as leading questions, and in fact properly describes a leading question by definition. Then, however, she not only goes on to provide examples of questions which are not truly leading in the courtroom sense, she fails to develop the use of the technique into her otherwise thorough consideratin on the power of questioning. That's truly a large oversight; major decisions are made, and altered, every day in courtrooms through a skillful cross examination. This tool is invaluable in challenging lives generally, and although confrontational in style, can and should be used in the appropriate non-courtroom setting for the same purpose. In fairness to Leeds, entire books have been written on the topic of leading questions in cross examination, and there's no way she could have done it justice here as only part of the overall subject. But given the amazing persuasive ability of the mechanism, I was surprised it did not get fair play.

The other minor quibble might be deemed unfair, but here goes. Something big is missing. Whatever one thinks of Jesus, it cannot be seriously doubted that he forever changed the world. More has been written about him than any other person in history, and more has happened in the world in his name (good and bad) than in any other. Key to his ministry was the perfectly timed question. Yet, in all the examples given, he is not mentioned, depite numerous cites to rabbis and other religious personalities. Not to knock the Jewish perspective of the book, it would have done the subject of questioning more justice, I think, had there been the best examples imaginable included in the book among so many others. He asked such persuasive questions as "What does it profit if a man gains the whole world and loses his soul?" and "Why do you call me 'Lord' but do not do the things that I say?" And perhaps most quoted, "Who is without sin among you? Let him cast the first stone." I'm not sure how these life changing and history altering questions could be overlooked, even if one does not recognize Jesus as the Christ.

Now again, let's not lose sight of the rating. The book is a good, concise, persuasive and encouraging book for the use ofquestioning in a wide variety of useful motivations. I give it a near perfect score, despite these minor shortcomings. To be clear, what I have pointed as shortcomings are really just things that might be added to the book to perhaps add even more value to a volume that packs a good punch.

I would put this on anyone's must-read list. After you read it you will be better equipped to question your own direction in life, to gather information in a more organized and thoughtful way, to be more deliberate and effective in meaningful dialogue, and to become motivational to others. Use the suggestions and become more thoughtful, as well as to lead those in your circle also to become more thoughtful.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a helpful book!!!
I am a college senior job hunting right now and decided to get this book to improve my communication skills. I'm only through about half of this book and already love it. It has so much great information about improving communication. I have actually started using some of the information in the book...asking a lot more questions than I used to, and I have seen excellent results!

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch
I saw Dorothy Leeds at a book talk and was so impressed that I had to buy her book. I am very impressed at the breadth of occupations and life situations to which her writing applies. It is very practical information that almost anyone can use. I am in the field of education, and it will certainly help me to ask better questions as a teacher. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and helpful
This book is easy to read and full of great examples. I've started asking better questions already and I've noticed my job performance getting better. My wife read the book, too, and I think our marriage will benefit more and more as we communicate better -- all because of asking good questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey MOM, WHAT? WHEN? is Dinner?
GOOGOO Gogga! This book is great for teaching people in general to ask WHY? The problem with many institutions is the shunning of questions and replying with "that is just the way it is!" This book spurs one on to ask till you reach the meat of the situation that one encounters in this uncertain world. Why am I here? What is my objective? Great questions to spur individuals to a higher level of learning: synthesis or ownership of knowledge. This book helps people to stop "going with the flow of ordinary life." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Kickass Book
Wow. Be A Kickass Assistant is my new bible. This book offered a zillion tools to help me be a better assistant. I loved reading about The White House, and even though my boss isn't as cool as George, we've already discussed several things from the book that we're going to implement. My favorite thing about the book was that it gave me a new outlook on my job and about myself. Thanks, Heather Beckel.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun read, even for non-assitants
This book is written to help you become a better assistant, and it succeeds very well at that. Heather Beckel's suggestions on how to be a better assistant are also useful for anyone who works in an office - her guidelines on computer use, keeping on schedule, and communication were helpful to me.
But, more importantly, the book is an entertaining read for anyone! Beckel has worked in some very interesting places, with some famous and powerful people. She has some great stories to tell that complement her suggestions for the workplace. The book is written in a conversational style that makes it easy to read in "small bites." I enjoyed it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Elementary
The writer has great writing style and all, but it's really for the newcomers in the world of professional administration.

I was impressed by the title of the book. My style of reading? I read the cover, backcover, contents and introduction. Then, I briefly scanned the book. I like the presentation. What's really lacking is the content when I really dig into it. I had the expectation that it's for the 'take-your-career-to-the-next-level' readers (seasoned office professionals), but it's not.

The information provided, particularly the "Appendix" is very USA but the concepts and principles are very relevant. Having worked and still do, in large American corporations, I find it easy relating to the book.

Having said all that, it still makes a GREAT book for everyone who is NEW and ASPIRES to be the BEST admin you could ever be - A KICKASS ASSISTANT. Happy reading!

2-0 out of 5 stars Okay
I bought the e book which was nice because I got it the same day but no nice since I can not print it or copy it for notes. This book is very good for new assistants. I would have liked to have read more ideas than hear all the stories. It was an okay book I probably would not recommend it. I was pulled in by the strong title.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is KICKASS!!!
This is not your typical secretarial manual. There is nothing dry, staid, or boring here. This book is for folks who want to go places, and don't want to get stuck in the "Admin" trap. I loved it, and will continue to reference it for my current job. I will even refer to it when I have my own assistant in the future. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point
The sample tests were good to use to review, but the book did not contain any tutorials on how to do the "engineering"-type aeronautical questions. It does give you the correct answers, but no real help if you're starting from zero on these sections. Overall, the book is better than using nothing, but I would search the web for help on some of the electrical mazes and such if you are not familiar with those items. Also, when practicing, keep yourself strictly within the time limits - the biggest problem when taking the test (for me) was the time limit.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you did well on the SAT's, then don't buy this book!
Some test preparation books are great. They provide you with ample practice problems, but most importantly they provide you with critical test taking strategies. This book provides plenty of practice problems, but you don't need to buy a book for that! Just use your old high school text books! All the test basically compramises of is math and english and if you did well on the SAT, then you know you're already proficient in those areas. All you need is touch up work and this book won't help with that. The reason I bought this book was to learn the strategies behind the test. Unfortunately, this book contains very little of that. In my opinion, the sample test prep book that your service should provide for free is good enough.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
When I got this book, I thought that I would help me prepare for the AFOQT as best as possible. Thank goodness I thought about getting the SAT book as well. The only things this book showed was the type of questions that you may have on the test, along with the answers. For the math portion, it
