Book Description

Succeeding at Your Interview: A Practical Guide for Teachers uses an effective interactive format to present core information about interviewing for a teaching job, document a wide variety of interview processes, guide teacher candidates in developing strategies for interviewing, and increase their confidence in communicating their professional knowledge. In a spiral process, readers are asked to consider scenarios, respond to questions, contemplate the perspective offered by the authors, and modify their responses. The goal is to help teacher candidates develop and articulate a clear idea of their own professional knowledge and of the culture of the schools at which they are interviewing.

*Eleven detailed chapters and 5 interview scenarios engage the reader in continuous reflective practice in the multifaceted activities integral to interviewing--beginning with organizing the job search and proceeding through the entire interview process.

*The scenarios implicitly develop knowledge and the chapters explicitly detail the information.

*Specific interview situations engage readers in articulating their professional knowledge, linking theory and practice.

*"Keep in Mind" comments, Margin Notes, and Decision Trees provide opportunities to reflect on the issues and develop personal responses.

*Sample documents, formats, questions, and responses enhance understanding of evaluation processes.

*Graphic organizers at the beginning and end of each chapter provide visual representations of the concepts and concerns addressed in each chapter, assisting the reader in identifying chapters relevant to their current needs in the job search and in synthesizing, organizing, and reviewing the information contained in the chapter. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book will make you interview-savvy !
Beyond a "Must-Read"--this is a "Must-Do" personal coaching workbook. As a counselor in educational placement, I develop interview tip sheets, classroom seminars and conduct mock interviews for student teachers. This book does more. It walks you through sample interviews and shows you how to "work the questions." The authors clarify the interview process for inexperienced candidates, and provide the tools for anyone (even other-than-teacher job seekers) to interview with confidence and professionalism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Tool
"Succeeding at your interview" is a good resource for anyone entering the field of education. This book gives the reader a step by step guide for achieving a teaching position in the school of his or her choice. Expert guidance is provided on preparing an application, presenting yourself as a professional, and evaluating an interviewer's questions. In addition, the scenario sessions are an excellent tool to avoid being caught unprepared for an interview question. I plan on recommending this book to all of the teachers I know. This would be a great gift for a recent college graduate, or a seasoned professional who is changing career paths.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guidance From an Experienced Mentor
I have taught in a suburban New York school system for 35 years and have served on many interviewing teams. Review of questioning techniques and the interview scenarios can be a great help to teachers and administrators on these teams. But it is especially valuable to the prospective teacher who after reading and studying "Succeeding at Your Interview" will be prepared to face any setting or question posed at an interview. This ability means SUCCESS!

The prospective teacher will gain confidence by becoming familiar with the variety of interview formats. The 5 scenarios are-
1. An Initial School Based One to One Interview
2. An Initial Interview with a School Based Team
3. A District Based Interview with Several Principals
4. A School Based Interview with Role Playing
5. A School Based Interview with a Demonstration Lesson

Becoming familiar with the varied possibilities can prevent being caught off guard and will present a secure, confident candidate.
The reader is exposed to interviewers' questions and techniques in evaluating them. There are 7 issues that are usually discussed in interviews. These issues are reviewed with practice exercises. The questions covered are on the topics of-
1. Yourself
2. Learning Principles
3. Supporting Learning
4. Impressions of Teaching
5. Classroom Lessons
6. Personal Approaches
7. Your Questions

This book also provides guidance with gathering information about potential teaching positions, organizing the application process and suggested readings.

"Succeeding at Your Interview" is a most valuable tool for the prospective and experienced teacher before interviewing for a position as well as for the teacher on the team involved in the interviewing process. Get this book for success! ... Read more

Book Description

Building the Bridge As You Walk On It tells the personal stories of people who have embraced deep change and inspired author Robert Quinn to take his concept one step further and develop a new model of leadership—“the fundamental state of leadership.” The exploration of this transformative state is at the very heart of the book. Quinn shows how anyone can enter the fundamental state of leadership by engaging in the eight practices that center on the theme of ever-increasing integrity—reflective action, authentic engagement, appreciative inquiry, grounded vision, adaptive confidence, detached interdependence, responsible freedom, and tough love. After each chapter, Quinn challenges you to assess yourself with respect to each practice and to formulate a strategy for personal growth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Leading in Life
Reading this book caused my understanding, interest and excitement about self-management and self-motivation, and about leading and motivating others, to expand enormously - perhaps even to explode in a positive manner. After discovering the table of "Eight Polarities and Eight Creative States," I have referred to it repeatedly. All of us know that motivation of one's self or others may be ethereal and certainly is metastable. Dr. Quinn has carefully chosen the most pertinent terminology and thoroughly explained why and how we can move toward balance between the extremes of the Eight Polarities and thereby lengthen our stay within "the fundamental state of leadership." The examples shared are contagious - as is the fundamental state of leadership.

Dr. Quinn explains, "Teaching...the concept [is] not the key. The key [is] to challenge [others] and support them in choosing to enter the fundamental state of leadership" following one's own inherently contagious example. Excitement mushrooms from the possibility and understanding of how to choose to live in the fundamental state of leadership and consequentially to pervade positive, effective leadership influence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ordinary Individual, Extraordinary Leader
While this is the third book written by Quinn in a trilogy on the process of helping individuals and organizations to make deep change, I happened to read this one first. I then eagerly read his other two books.

It is human nature to find a comfort zone and then try our hardest to stay in that zone. We feel safe, secure, and in control in our comfort zone. Sometimes, however, we try so hard to stay in the zone that we exert more energy than it would take to change. So why not change? Change is difficult and necessitates giving up power. Prior to reading the book I felt it was almost admitting failure. Change can be especially difficult when we are acting in the role of leader, and trying to move a large group of individuals toward the fulfillment of a goal or vision. How, then, do we lead and manage change? How do we transform an organization?

Leadership is a state of being, which Quinn calls the "fundamental state of leadership". This is a state in which we are open to personal change, and consequently draw others to us by our change in behavior. In the book Quinn gives a detailed explanation of this new model of leaderhip and thoroughly examines the personal nature of change. He gives examples ordinary people who have led extraordinary change efforts. These stories motivate, they bring heroic efforts within reach of the ordinary individual.

Executive, middle manager, associate, student, father or mother - all will benefit from this book. ... Read more

Book Description

FROM THE NATIONAL BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF BRAND WARFARE

A genuine winner shows you how to stand out from the crowd

As CEO of John Hancock Financial Services and the bestselling author of Brand Warfare, David D'Alessandro knows plenty about breaking away from the pack. In Career Warfare, this ultimate insider tells the true story of how he learned the unwritten rules of corporate ladder climbing.

In his signature, outspoken style, D'Alessandro offers concrete advice on building a reputation that commands respect, coping with office politics, and surviving the less-than-sane aspects of any organization. He explains why only 20 percent of the people in a given corporation are truly valuable to the organization, demonstrates the right way to polish the boss's image and prevent the boss from tarnishing the reader's, and provides valuable lessons in the etiquette of reputation building.

Through engaging, often-hilarious stories drawn from his own dramatic climb to the top, David D'Alessandro speaks to success-oriented readers at every level and explains:

  • How to make people want to take a chance on them
  • How to gain and keep a great reputation
  • Why success will not proceed in a rational manner
  • Why hard work and accomplishment aren't enough
  • What character has to do with it

4-0 out of 5 stars great read
In this book, we meet the job candidate who washed her face with a
pancake, the account executive who sang opera for a president and
countless characters who are the masters of their own fate in the workplace.
The book is sprinkled with anecdotes and experiences amassed over a
30-year career by John Hancock's CEO David D'Alessandro. This book is
bursting with real-world examples of how to - and how not to - move up the
corporate ladder. I share D'Alessandro's view that every moment is
important as you build your own personal brand of success.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too general - nothing special
The book gives very general and common advice. Advice looks dress well etc is not the kind of advice people expect from such a book. May be the author was trying to write the book for a very wide and general audience. Decent book for someone in the initial phases of career. For experienced readers, "The 5 patterns of extraordinary careers" is a much better book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!
and examples about the skills necessary to realize their ambitions in various business cultures. Author David F. D'Alessandro is a marketing guru, and a skilled phrase maker and spin doctor. To his own surprise, he was offered a chair at the management table where the bottom line decisions get made on his way to becoming CEO of John Hancock Financial Services. In the framework of rules for personal branding and in the interest helping you play office politics successfully, D'Alessandro spins dozens of yarns that bring context and reality to a subject that is often speculated about by authors who have never really achieved the success their books describe. His advice is ruthlessly honest, pointed, witty, precise and ripe with polished anecdotes. For this reason we recommend this book to business persons anywhere on the corporate ladder who suspect their battle plan may be ready for a few new moves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Management Advice
David D'Alessandro provides excellent advice for managers of all levels who are looking to get ahead in the business world. His advice is very 'down to earth' and provided in a funny, yet very meaningful way. I would strongly advise that all business leaders read this and especially those just out of college trying to build their 'career brand'!

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read
I have over 100 books sitting around I've bought in the last few years. Only a few seem to be really great books.

This book is up there, depending on your career goals. I would say this is a must for anybody working in a large organization or corporate atmosphere. D'Alessandro provides a lot of foresight into things you might not recognize at the time they are taking place, because he's been there already.

If you don't like this book and you're not already an executive, then it's probably because this book doesn't apply to your career. If you don't deal with corporate politics, then this doesn't apply to your career "as much" either.

Now, if you want to understand why you might have a file cabinet of good feedback and accomplishments but keep getting passed up for promotions by people with little or no feedback then read this book.

Your career is more than how good you do, it's more than making your team or group look good too. Your career improvements come down to snap decisions and judgements in places you may never expect, and this book does a great job of explaining that.

Now, what I don't like is the political under tones of the book. I think those should have been left out. There are some obvious personal undertones in the book that I didn't like. I liked the book when it talked about career, but I could do without David's personal democratic agenda. One thing really sticks out with me; In one area of the book he witnessed an elderly lady asking somebody else if they thought she could afford some shoes for her Grandaughter. Instead of feeling compasionate, he says it made him realize that he's used to being around people with an IQ over 140. Give me a break. Although he is a CEO of John Hancock, some of his insecurities are very evident in this writing. Kudos to his career accomplishments, but even a CEO isn't perfect and it shows.

Overall, I give this book 4 stars based on the material relating to a career. I would give it 1 more star if this book was worth reading over and over again and was lacking the personal agenda evident toward the end of the book when David puts more emphasis on talking about himself rather than staying on topic. ... I know that Dr. Cullen knows what he is talking about, I know that this book is the standard to which other books on management are held, and it is almost always required reading, but this book is instant somnia. 4-0 out of 5 stars An Enticing and Useful Guide For All Aging Baby Boomers!
For anyone interested in how the rapid changes in our society have affected traditional ideas about retirement, this book provides a wonderful resource that not only questions a variety of traditional notions regarding aging and retirement, but also provides a plethora of thought-provoking considerations that help us to reconsider both the fact of growing older and the idea of retirement as they are currently viewed in this culture. Of course, the fact that I have already retired from one profession and am rapidly approaching the same conclusion with a brief secondary teaching career may make me the perfect candidate for such a book.

Yet I must admit that while I do not fully agree with many of the particulars that authors Marika and Howard Stone so enthusiastically espouse, I do find their overall message regarding the exciting possibilities for individual achievement and continuing contribution that such a life situation offers the retirement-eligible individual or couple. They embark from the substantial philosophical position carved out by former academic Theodore Roszak ("The Making of a Counterculture") in his absorbing tome, "America The Wise, The Longevity Revolution and the Wealth of Nations"(see my review), pointing out the facts associated with the new and burgeoning potential of the so-called baby boomer generation which is rapidly approaching retirement age with an incredible reserve of both financial and human resources at its disposal. Both Roszak and the Stones both argue for unleashing the human potential in a wave of creative activity, which is socially useful, and personally enriching.

What this book represents, then, is an eminently useful and immensely practical resource for people hoping to restructure their expectations, values, and personal experiences about what the retirement years are going to mean for them. Given the realities that traditional ideas about retirement are undergoing a revolution, the Stones provide the reader with an easy way through the maze toward a better understanding of what all the options are, as well as how to evaluate and assess these options and opportunities for a better and more fulfilling experience in the later years of life. And while the Stones find the mantra of life to be closely connected to work and expression through one's livelihood, they are wise enough to recognize other options for others, and encourage the reader to explore whatever seems valuable and worthwhile. This is a wonderful book, a delicious treat for those of us anxiously peering over the fence into the retirement years and wondering what to make of it all. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially for anyone over the age of 62
Motivational speaker Howard Stone and yoga teacher Marika Stone team up in Too Young To Retire: An Off-The-Road Map To The Rest Of Your Life to present readers with a down-to-earth instructional guide which is drawn from the authors own lives as a couple, their research, and several assorted case histories in order to present practical and effective alternatives to retirement -- including stimulating work and community service. From opportunities to earn money or participate in business, to volunteering one's time, to traveling for fun and profit, Too Young To Retire is an exciting and dynamic self-help instructional guide for charting new possibilities for the future and highly recommended reading -- especially for anyone over the age of 62 and not ready for the rocking chair/nursing home slide into oblivion.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money and Skip This One
Unless you are a far-left political idealist; "open-minded," as Mr. and Mrs. Stone say, their book offers little useful information for retirees.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Retire when you can Review?
"It is already clear the 21st Century will demand more of all of us, young or old. The gifts we are given ? longevity, better health, education and financial resources ? come with responsibility. After all, we have inherited and even helped create a world that needs our wisdom, experience, and compassion now."

I've always thought the idea of retiring to be a strange concept. Why would you just give up your entire life? Even if you gave up your job should there not be other interests you would pursue, perhaps even more aggressively than your previous job.

It has been said that a "hobby" is more the man than his "job." I jest not when I say reviewing can be quite a great job/hobby.

The authors explain how to awaken the inner activist or volunteer. Chapter 5 gives a list of 101 Opportunities you could pursue. I know for sure there is a need for professional people who can keep giving their talents to society. Some of the ideas include:

Relocation Specialist
Personal Coach
Home Tutor
Travel Writer
Yoga Teacher
Massage Therapist
Author
Executive chef
Cabaret Singer

You might be thinking, "Hey, those sound more fun than what I'm doing now!" I personally like the "author" and "massage therapist" idea.

The authors explain how life is uncharted territory. How we live in a culture preoccupied with wealth. Are we not living our lives to find our deepest purpose?

The Contents Include:

Money - The Prose of Life
It's Not Working
It Is Working - Volunteering Revisited
101 Opportunities for the Open-Minded
Toward Wellness
Radical Departures
Resources

After you read this book, you will wonder if retirement really represents the "good life."

Well if you take Chapter 7 into account and start traveling the world, this might be just the bliss your soul has been craving. I also "loved" the idea of becoming a care taker. Who would not want to go live in a beautiful location as a property manager?

This book is about living in the moment and seeing your new freedom as an excuse to do exactly what you love.

Creative and Wise!

4-0 out of 5 stars To retire or not to retire, that is the $ question
The couple that worte "Too Young to Retire" tried out the idea of a Sunbelt retirement in Palm Springs and ended up realizing that this was not the life they'd had in mind. Is retirement meant to be living at 70% of your income, completely at leisure in a warm climate, or do you want something more challenging, such as a new career?

The Stones give alternatives to the leisure life, including ideas for new types of jobs such as doula (childbirth coach), Navy contract teacher, and housecleaner.

The only vague part of the book is that it doesn't give a complete picture about health insurance; this can be quite a burden financially and fraught with dangers until you can qualify for Medicare. Even COBRA's (carry-over insurance from your employer) are expensive for family coverage and can be a significant part of your (now-reduced) retirement income unless you get another job that has benefits.

But I certainly support the Stones' assertion that retirement can be a lot more than golfing and bingo, and if you are of the same suspicion about your own leanings, this book may give you some sharp ideas about life alternatives to that Florida condo. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, Can't Stand You
The book is simply written, with very few if any difficult theories or ideas put forth. The theories presented should easily be understood by most any reader, as it mostly rehashes lessons taught to most people by their parents. That is pay attention to people and deal with them calmly and rationally. Brinkman and Kirschner do tend to fall into a lot of pop psychology, which I guess fits this type of book, but tended to annoy this reader.

From the very beginning the doctors failed to engage me, they did not give me a reason to care to use these strategies on very many people. Given their backgrounds in holistic healing and naturopathic medicine, it would seem logical that they would have informed us of the health benefits enjoyed by eliminating stressful people from our lives. Instead this reader found it difficult to relate to any of the proposed situations in anything more than a professional setting. Because of that, this book would make an excellent blueprint on how to manipulate people on your way up the ladder of success.

Each chapter was well organized, most beginning with a story that depicted that particular chapters theme. The authors then laid out a step-by-step guide to dealing with this type of difficult individual. It seems a bit naïve to think that one strategy will work for each of the personality types. Some may find it difficult to proceed with the given advice, and therefore it would have been nice to see some alternative strategies given. This would give the reader greater flexibility when dealing with his or her particular difficult person. Not only were the suggestions limited, often times they seemed quite simplistic, almost as though Brinkman and Kirschner believe that people are machines and simply by pushing the right buttons or saying the magic pop psychology phrase we can control anyone. Seldom does it work that way in real life. This tendency is clearly seen in the stories at the end of each chapter. Again Brinkman and Kirschner introduce us to some people in conflict. One character is a difficult person and the other employs the strategies spelled out by the authors. After the techniques are used, it is almost like magic that the difficult person begins to cooperate. Now this would be acceptable as a way to make your point, but often we are led to believe that each story is a recount of a real-life occurrence. So, unless the authors have found a real life magic bullet, they have lost a lot of credibility with this reader.

Another reason to look upon this book with suspicion is the fact that the authors apparently want us to believe that all of these ideas were somehow conceived, developed and born of their own brilliant minds. On only two occasions do the refer us to any other sources for the theories put forth in this book, and one of those is another book written by the same men. A book of this type should be able to direct us to other sources to back up the theories presented.

As stated earlier, this book is an excellent source for those who wish to manipulate co-workers and business associates, especially the first two-thirds of it. Towards the end though it does become a bit more personal and even more enjoyable to read. The last section of the book is certainly the freshest. Here we get some good advice on proper use and etiquette on the phone and using E-mail.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that really helps!
This is the finest book I've read on handling difficult people. As a training director for a large company, I've read many books on this subject, and trained interpersonal skills for years. This book is the CLEAREST, most practical book on the subject.

The ten types of difficult people are now in my vocabulary, and help me instantly size up a situation so I can handle it better. The authors detail practical steps to take with each style, making it easier to increase your confidence in difficult situations.

Most of all the authors encourage the reader to change his or her behavior, and the last chapter even offers the idea of the reader being a difficult person, in order to further reinforce the skills that this book teaches.

A real winner, and a book that has helped my career and my sanity.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent reference
I was actually required to read this book for a college leadership class. I found it to be an excellent resource and I would recommend this book to anyone. It has many implications dealing with leadership, but you do not need to be a leader to find this book helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Liberate Yourself from Jerks.
This book has an excellent premise: the only way to deal with difficult people is to change the way you respond to them. Think about it. Do any of us ever do what we want to do all the time? Of course not. How many New Year's resolutions have we broken? Well, if we can't control our own behavior for our own good, how can we control someone else's especially when that person's obnoxious ways satisfies some perverse need? Some books on interpersonal conflict recommend that the reader resort to planning biting comebacks or simply ignoring the offending party. Rick and Rick offer more positive and healthier solutions (such as being more empathetic without being a punching bag) that if implemented will help the reader stay sane when under attack and eventually learn to stay above the fray.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some sound advice and a variety of flaws
Dr. Rick Brinkman and Dr. Rick Kirschner are Naturopathic physicians who wrote the book, Dealing with People You Can't Stand, with good intentions of helping people identify and deal with the 10 most difficult behaviors.

Effective communication is key to successfully dealing with difficult behaviors. Good examples of effective communication are given in chapter 4. One communication technique is Blending. Dr. Rick & Dr. Rick state "Blending is any behavior by which you reduce the differences between you and another in order to meet them where they are and move to common ground."

Another strong point of this book are the illustrations of the Lens of Understanding. They are throughout the book and are very helpful. The Lens of Understanding illustrations help you to see the organizational framework. The illustrations are formatted to resemble the cross hairs of a scope on a rifle. They are an effective visual aide.

One of the weak areas are the typographical errors. There are several throughout the book. One example is on page xii. The period after the 2 is missing. Another typo is on page 118, in paragraph three. The word when is spelled ohen.

Another weak aspect is contradiction. For example in the Introduction Dr. Rick & Dr. Rick tell you that the difficult person will change. Their statement "While you can't change difficult people, you can communicate with them in such a way that they change themselves. It's a matter of knowing how to get through to them when they're behaving badly.", contradicts itself in several places throughout the book. The authors tell you that you better adjust your attitude. One example of this is on page 68. The heading is in bold lettering and states "You Better Adjust Your Attitude." They tell you to watch your emotions when dealing with a Tank.

On page 201, Dr. Rick & Dr. Rick give more contradicting advice. In the seventh ounce of prevention, they tell you to beware of multitasking when on the telephone. Then in the eighth
ounce of prevention they tell you to use your phone time to catch up on personal hygiene.

Errors and contradictions aside this book helped me to have a better insight to what makes some people tick.
This helps me communicate more effectively, thus taking some of the stress out of my life. ... Read more

Book Description

Women make up almost half of today's labor force, but in corporate America they don't share half of the power. Only four of the Fortune 500 company CEOs are women, and it's only been in the last few years that even half of the Fortune 500 companies have more than one female officer.

A major reason for this? Most women were never taught how to play the game of business.

Throughout her career in the supercompetitive, male-dominated media industry, Gail Evans, one of the country's most powerful executives, has met innumerable women who tell her that they feel lost in the workplace, almost as if they were playing a game without knowing the directions.

She tells them that's exactly the case: Business is indeed a game, and like any game, there are rules to playing well. For the most part, Gail has discovered, women don't know them.

Men know these rules because they wrote them, but women often feel shut out of the process because they don't know when to speak up, when to ask for responsibility, what to say at an interview, and a lot of other key moves that can make or break a career.

Now, in her book Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman, Gail Evans reveals the secrets to the playbook of success and teaches women at all levels of the organization--from assistant to vice president--how to play the game of business to their advantage.

Sharing with humor and candor her years of lessons from corporate life, Gail Evans gives readers practical tools for making the right decisions at work.Among the rules you will learn are:

• How to Keep Score at Work
• When to Take a Risk
• How to Deal with the Imposter Syndrome
• Ten Vocabulary Words That Mean Different Things to Men and Women
• Why Men Can be Ugly, and You Can't
• When to Quit Your Job

Evans is not saying that every woman has to play exactly by men's rules--not at all. Women bring many inherent traits to the workplace that can provide them with a potential advantage over men, such as a woman's ability to form relationships, or her intuition. But women do need to know the basic rules so that they can understand the full consequences of their every action and how it makes an impact on their career.

An honest and practical handbook that reveals important insights into relationships between men and women and work, Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman, is a must-read for every woman who wants to leverage her power in the workplace.

Could be subtitled; How Not To Shoot Yourself in the Foot. I'd like to join in with the positive reviews of this book. I'm a business school student and I read this book on the recommendation of a visiting female executive. I've since lent it out to my classmates and have watched it be passes around from woman to woman. We love it! Evans offers simple, easy to relate to examples of behavior women adopt in the workplace that can be "career limiting." She openly challenges the reader to see which of her observations fit and which don't to each woman's unique situation. A well balanced, honest set of suggestions and observations that will benefit any woman seeking to advance in her career.

5-0 out of 5 stars EVERY DAUGHTER SHOULD GIVE THIS BOOK TO HER MOTHER
If you are a woman and have ever needed a reason to stop taking everything everybody says or does personally, this book says it. This is the guidebook to business that baby-boomer-females-in-the-businessplace never had. Gail Evans has lived what she preaches and speaks in a language women can understand. I was shaking my head "yes" throughout the book, as I recognized my own situation and frustrations in workplace. I knew it had something to do with my gender, but other than pointing the finger of blame at all men, I could not pinpoint what was happening in this male-created domain. I guess I thought I was the only person (read woman) who couldn't figure out the rules for success in the workplace. I also needed to hear the words from a very successful woman who learned by doing. I learned that I can still be a woman, but succeed in the male-created, male-dominated business world, and not feel like an imposter...which is exactly what one of her chapters deals with. You don't have to be a sell-out, but quit taking everything so damn personal....this is business. This is not a book written by a man who thinks he knows what women are thinking. And, it is not a book written by a woman who is so well-connected, or glamorous and beautiful, that you would wonder how she could not be a success in the businessplace. This is a book written by "one of us", and concentrates on exactly why many women struggle so hard to succeed in her job, no matter what that job is. If you are a manager, or a clerk, or anything in between, this book will help you as a female. I am giving a copy of this book to every working woman that I know...with a few exceptions; those who have already figured out the rules. Now I know why they are so successful, and it has nothing to do with their luck and my unluckiness. I feel so much better and unburdened after reading this book. I am going to keep it at my bedside and use it as my affirmation support..."I will not personalize workplace issues...I will not.....".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
As a computer professional without a college degree, I found that I had learned some of the rules already by watching other men and then evaluating their responses to my behavior. I moved up the ladder by expecting more of myself and acting more like the men around me. The one thing I learned is if you want to be treated as an equal, you must ACT like an equal. Too many women whine and grouse about how they don't get what they think they deserve, when that is exactly what they are getting because while they're moving their lips, they're not DOING anything. My mother always told me that a closed mouth gathers no foot. Read the book, learn the basic rules, and then PRACTICE them whether you like it or not -- that is, if you really want to get ahead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome and inspirational book
It seems only logically that girls and boys are brought up differently throughout their lives but most women seem to forget this too easily. This books brings the reader step-by-step through the "whys" behind female actions in the professional or personal arenas. It is not wrong for a woman to act a certain way but knowing what drives this action and how it is looked upon by the public is a window into the professional soul of a majority of women. It may not give women step-by-step instructions on how to get into the CEO chair but it will help women evaluate on a more sincere level why they do certain things or act certain ways and how they can change these actions to work for them instead of against them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Raters with "how this relates to MY life" as the criteria:
In contrary to what a lot of negative response I've read on here, that had denoted the book's values due to the fact that it carries sexist qualities, shows no sympathy to a woman's choice of lifestyle, and that the book is not written for a generalized community in a last-generation point of view: This book is not meant to be a pat on your back to make you feel better about your womanhood. If you want that, there are soap opera magazines out there teaching you how to raise your children. There are also other great books out there that are targetted towards the younger generation.

Gail Evan did not once say "this book is targetted for everyone". She's talking to the women who wants to succeed in the business sense, in a man's style. It represents her insights from her long travel, and it is her belief from experience that these are the issues that held women back from achieving the status they want. This book is for the women out there who is willing to make a change in life so to reach to a higher level in the game. It's not for sulking women who wants to juggle the 12098723 priorities of family and friends before business. (In that case, the book for you is "the 7 habits of highly effective people) Women who decides to rate this book should first put themselves in a mindset that this is not Oprah. As the title reinforces Gail Evan's standpoint: PLAY LIKE A MAN. Most men who play in the field don't COMPLAIN that they want to stay home 8 hours a day for their children, and they don't relate themselves to their bar buddies' private life in every conversation.

The book simply gives you the unspoken jargons men made up and Gail's interpretation of the terms. It doesn't tell you "THIS, is the lifestyle that'll be your ULTIMATE LIFE-LOVING experience." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Coherent and Accessible
A friend of mine recommended this book as a solid introduction to graphic design. The author, Lisa Graham, covers the principles of design effectively and even throws in some unexpectedly funny explanations that really make the point. For example, the beginning of the Balance chapter is hilarious and made me realize that a page really can make a person feel weird, if it isn't designed using the design principles. Once I read that balance chapter, I realized that many of her illustrations also were surprisingly humerous, and reveals what must be a delightful sense of humor.

If you buy this book, keep in mind that the humor is used to support the points Graham makes, and is not the sole focus of the book. This is after all a design book and makes some serious and informative points.

Perhaps what is most effective about this book is the thorough explanations she gives on why a design works and why it doesn't work. This is a refreshing change from many other introductory design books that I looked at where the primary focus of the text seemed to be to show off pretty pictures. Pretty pictures are nice, but WHY do the designs work? WHY don't they work. Basics of Design tells you why, and in such a wonderfully understandable way that you remember, and easily apply what Graham teaches.

Good job Lisa. When are you going to write more books on graphic design? I'll be sure to keep an eye out for more of your work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Beginners
Having wasted much time looking through a number of other books supposedly covering the same subject, this book is a welcome relief.

This book covers in adequate detail the essentials and the basic principles of design, including emphasis, contrast, balance, alignment, repetition, flow, the use of images, color, typography, etc. It gives enough explanation with examples for one to get a good grounding on the subject, without getting too technical, keeping the book highly readable. A part of the book also focuses on specific design situations, including logos, flyers, newsletters, resumes, etc.

Perfect for anyone with no formal training in design, but would like to improve his/her understanding of design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful
I am a complete dunce at design (or at least I was). Whatever the optical equivalent to a "tin ear" is, I have it. In this book Ms. Graham gives step-by-step simple and yet logical and practical instruction on how to make one's designs both attractive and effective. Her writing style often made me feel as if I were being given advice by a "friend in the design business." I began using the principles that she teaches in my web pages and flyer designs before I was even half-way through the book. The improvements that I saw in my abilities were amazing.

This book has (the basics of) everything: typography, contrast, color, flow, emphasis, etc. Most of the books I had examined prior to finding this little gem were nothing more than over-sized "picture books" with writing in the margins, I couldn't bring myself to spend the money on so little information (but they sure were pretty). This book, on the other hand, is mostly text with small, well-selected illustrations, and at the end of every chapter the author gives several "case-studies" of the current topic and walks the reader through each one.

I cannot imagine a better book for someone new to design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand
This book makes it easy to understand typography and layout. The author gives the reader a good grounding in typography and the basic principles of design, making it easy to improve your own designs and pages. Her explanations makes it a lot easier to pick the right type to go with the image and the topic. My designs have improved after reading this book. ... Read more

Book Description

What is different about the careers of people like Lou Gerstner, the acclaimed, recently retired chairman and CEO of IBM? Or Senator Elizabeth Dole, Yahoo! COO Dan Rosensweig, and Tom Freston, chairman and CEO of MTV Networks?

Why did they ascend to the top and prosper—why did they have extraordinary careers—while others equally talented never reached their potential or aspirations?

Jim Citrin and Rick Smith of Spencer Stuart, the world’s most influential executive search firm, set out to explore this question. The result—based on in-depth, original research—is sure to be the most important and useful book for anyone seeking to crack the code of how to build a rewarding, personally satisfying career.

Like weather systems and financial markets, careers contain patterns. What Citrin and Smith found from their research and extensive experience is that people with extraordinary careers are guided by five straightforward patterns that can be harnessed and used by everyone. These individuals:

• Understand the value of you by translating their knowledge and experience into action, building their personal value over each phase of their career
• Practice benevolent leadership by not clawing their way to the top but by being carried there
• Solve the permission paradox, the dilemma of not being able to get a job without experience and not getting the experience without the job
• Differentiate using the 20/80 principle of performance by storming past their defined jobs to create breakthrough ideas and deliver unexpected impact
• Do not micromanage their careers, but macromanage them by gravitating toward the things they are best at and have a passion for, and working with people they like and respect

No one manages your career for you. But with Citrin and Smith as your guide, you’ll be able to understand—and act on—the root causes of success. And what better source for strategic career advice than Spencer Stuart, the firm that over the past ten years has conducted more than 60 percent of the searches for Fortune 1000 CEOs?

4-0 out of 5 stars Take Your Career and Make it Extraordinary! Read This Book!
The Five Patterns of Extraordinary Careers: The Guide for Achieving Success and Satisfaction by James M. Citrin and Richard A. Smith. This is a refreshing look at the Self-Help Career book genre. Job seekers, employers, and human resource professionals - in short, anyone that's interested in enriching their career - will benefit from this book.

THE FIVE PATTERNS OF EXTRAORDINARY CAREERS

1. Understand the Value of You. People with extraordinary careers understand how value is created in the workplace, and translate that knowledge into action, building their personal value over each phase of their careers.

2. Practice Benevolent Leadership. People with extraordinary careers do not claw their way to the top, they are carried there.

3. Overcome the Permission Paradox. People with extraordinary careers overcome one of the great Catch-22s of business: You can't get the job without experience and you can't get the experience without the job.

4. Differentiate Using the 20/80 Principle of Performance. People with extraordinary careers do their defined jobs exceptionally well but don't stop there. They storm past pre-determined objectives to create breakthrough ideas and deliver unexpected impact.

5. Find the Right Fit (Strengths, Passions & People). People with extraordinary careers make decisions with the long-term in mind. They willfully migrate toward positions that fit their natural strengths and passions and where they can work with people they like and respect.

The authors have developed a razor-sharp vocabulary that brings welcome dialogue about careers into the new age of business. The executives in this book are all focused on their career, this is one aspect of those with successful careers. The authors have proven that ignoring one's career can greatly supress chances at success.

Is it the best book I ever read? No, but it did help me to focus my attention on skills I was utilizing, just not to my best advantage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good concepts, tight presentation.
Mixes anecdotes with concepts to give examples of applicability.

4-0 out of 5 stars Take Hold of Your Career
I read a short article about "The 5 Patterns of Extraordinary Careers" on the Internet and decided it might be worth reading. Most of the career "guides" I had read up to this time were of the, 'choose your ideal career through completing a series of tests to identify your strengths' variety. But what intrigued me about this book was that rather than selecting the "right" career it was more about making the most of the career of you have. Still, Citrin and Smith do acknowledge the importance of being in a career that plays to your, "strengths, passions, and people" by making it one of the "patterns" of extraordinary careers; oddly, though, it is the last of the five rather the first. Perhaps one of my favorite quotes comes from this pattern, "...many people find, partway up the ascent, that their ladders were leaning against the wrong wall." Again, though, this book is more about what to do with the your career once you have found the "right" one. And therein lies perhaps the most important maxim of this book, successful careers are managed, sometimes unconsciously, rather than driven by fate or luck; a corollary is that opportunities are created and actively sought after rather than passively waited for. Even the authors acknowledge that these ideas aren't new. But the patterns represent a distillation of the interviews and surveys of extraordinary executives conducted across Industry boundaries and they, perhaps, are new, or are at least fresh.

The core of the book is chapters 2 - 6, one for each of the patterns: Understanding the Value of You, Practice Benevolent Leadership, Overcome the Permission Paradox, Differentiate Using the 20/80 Principle, and Find the Right Fit. Citrin and Smith go on to extend the patterns to extraordinary organizations in chapter 7. They use specific examples gleaned from their interviews to illustrate each of the patterns. And while these examples are certainly condensed, in order to fit within the scope of a single volume, they generally, if not specifically and in detail, prove the point. What is less clear though, are how technical careers fall into these patterns. All of the chosen examples are CEOs, COOs, CFOs, CTOs, CIOs, presidents, vice-presidents, and perhaps a Director or two. Though they try to generalize these success patterns you are still left with the impression that extraordinary careers are, at least in part, defined by having entered the executive ranks. I am sure that Citrin and Smith would disagree, but I am still struggling with how to apply these patterns to my rather technical career of Software Engineering without becoming a manager.

Overall this has been a valuable book - if for no other reason than that it has caused me to think about my career in concrete terms and how I can actively manage it rather than waiting for it to happen. The book isn't overly long and can be read in a week during your lunch breaks. Thinking about your career and how to apply the patterns is where the hard work begins.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book, but just doesn't quite stick
Richard Smith and James Citrin are executive search professionals (headhunters) from one of the top firms in the world. As customers of talent, they bring a unique viewpoint to career management. The treatment is more rigorous than one would expect from what could be a touchy feely book.

I read the book while contemplating what experiences are good for my career. It gives some key insights on careers, such as successful people don't push their way to success, they are carried by those around them. This highlights the need to help others succeed instead of keeping a self centered view of success.

While interesting, the reader is left without a lot of lasting depth. I finished the book about 2 months ago, but struggled to come up with key points from memory. If it were more impactful, perhaps I would have remembered them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Patterns of Extraordinary Careers by Citrin and Smith
This work describes a plethora of successful management
approaches/styles. The authors segment a career into the
promise phase, momentum in mid-career and harvest phase
at the height of a career. In addition, the need to build strong
management teams, motivate people and restructure organizations
is explained with appropriate examples. The authors describe
the importance of inventorying your skills so that opportunities
can be taken when they first appear. Big jobs go to men and
women who prove their abilities to outgrow smaller ones.
The importance of macromanaging careers is extolled rather than
the traditional micromanagement. The authors explain strategies
to penetrate top jobs without experience by learning to
make the complexities simple. They provide examples of
companies; such as , Cendian which have challenging jobs
in logistics outsourcing. Lastly, the authors provide a
definition of career success as:
o job freedom
o being well-regarded
o family happiness and contentment
o learning and challenge
o personal health

This book is a worthy addition to any personal library. ... Read more

Book Description

This little powerhouse of a book brings together a number of profound principles to explain the elusive link between the desire to do something and an accomplishment. A principle so startlingly simple, so infinitely powerful, that it will change the way people think about success and how to achieve it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different angle at making Law of Attract. more effective
Many of the reviewers who gave a low rating might have read the principles from a more limiting perspective, and I can see how that might happen. If most of the material that they had read before this one was based more on pragmatic everyday goal-setting advice, they may miss the metaphysical implications, which is totally understandable
After reading this book over three years ago, and then reading material on Quantum Physics, and its connection withour Mind, as well as the effects of thoughts and emotionalized focus on the actual physical manifestation of things, I think I got the message on the second read.

I loved not only Hernacki's personal story, but also the way he presented the concepts of how you can easily block the outpicturing of your goals by having a hesitant, or worse, attitude relating to taking steps toward the goal.
If I could sum up the reason why I mention in my listmania list why this is unusual among metaphysical books, it's in the way he instructs how to avoid projecting mental blockers into the Universe (which affect physical reality). These blockages are caused by you picturing in your mind possible painful steps you think you might have to take toward your objective, and then putting your foot down refusing to do that one possibly painful thing. The Law of Attraction is neutral, and pays attention to any hesitant energy.
If you emotionally agree to yourself that you are - body, mind, and soul - willing to do *anything*, you most likely won't have to do *most of the work* toward your goal. It's a paradox.
It's worth reading the book to elaborate for you what I'm summarizing here. He includes quotes by Emerson, and the really good quote by Goethe (Providence moves with you when you show boldness), to help support his points.

3-0 out of 5 stars Now You Know the Secret!
I'm not being completely snide when I say this book would probably be most interesting to those who get their financial advice from Suze Orman, their view of history from Joseph Campbell and their religious training from Deepak Chopra. For once, I'd like one of these people with the "answer to everything" to be more than a motivational speaker or writer (why not trying curing cancer?).I can't imagine why he hasn't shown up on a PBS special (or did I miss him?).On the plus side, he at least makes his book somewhat enjoyable and it's probably not a completely waste of time to read the book and find some inspiration.

2-0 out of 5 stars I knew that... Who doesn't know that?
I once read that the greatest secret to success is knowing what you want, know what it will cosy, and be willing to pay that price. I was given this book as a gift, from someone who purchased for 25 cents at a tag sale. Honestly, had I or anyone paid full price for this book, I would really be upset. As it was, 25 cents was just about a fare price.

After reading the book, I wonder if those positive reviews are because people really didn't know this common sense idea? Could it be that no one wants to admit they actually paid for a book that pretty much points out the obvious?

My hat is off to the author for coming up with such a creative title. I would think that anyone who is not happy with their current situation would jump at this book.

The real Ultimate Secret is that you already know this, and you haven't taken action and put it to use.

Hey, I could have had a V8...

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
I bought this "book" (I can't call it a real book, since it's more like a really long essay or self-help pamphlet) as a joke - I read the title and thought it might be entertaining and of course, I needed to know the secret!

It was hardly "life-transforming" for me - and in fact, made me kind of laugh. This big ultimate secret is as others state here - you must be willing to do whatever it takes to get what you want.Um, okay.I knew that already. That's pretty elementary, no?Yes, the difference between the "average" person and the wildly successful person isn't normally intelligence or knowledge - it isn't that the successful person was "luckier" or even necessarily had more opportunity.Plain & simple it's because the successful person has the knowledge, the opportunity and most importantly, the drive (i.e., the "ultimate secret") to succeed.

Perhaps I'm jaded, but I found this "book" to be kind of condescending and silly.Did it teach me anything new?Did it tell me how to find that drive that I might lack?Did it reveal some new philosophy about how to succeed in today's world?Did it tell me how to overcome the obstacles in my way of getting everything I want?Did it tell me *one thing* I didn't already know? No.

Did I shake my head and wonder aloud why I bought this & wasted my time reading it?Yes.

5-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLE BUT POWERFUL!
One of the simplist but most powerful books that i have ever read! We've all used this technique & seen it in use but few of us recognise it for what it is! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Truly a complete idiots guide
As the title states, this book is a complete idiots guide to anything sexual, from STDs to Tantra. As I view it this would rank at about the level of an advanced Jr. High Sex Ed course text book. It does have a few good hints and acknowledges the points I would have liked to learn more about; however provides no real substance. The author spends many chapters talking about safe sex, pregancy, and old age sexuality, rather than getting to what the title states "amazing sex". If you are looking for a book to spice up or to revitialize your sex life, choose another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sex book
If you are looking for a sex book that covers every topic really well and in detail, then this is the book. Other books that try to cover a lot of ground are not as good. Even the Dummy guide is not at all as good as this Idiot guide, and The Joy of Sex is bad compared with this book, too, because this book covers much more detailed information about all aspects of improving your sex life. This book is great by giving important details about sex, and it is funny at times, too, which sex should be. The pictures are sexy with out going too far. This is the best sex book to learn a lot and to get a more creative sex life. It would even make a good gift, because the title seems like a gag gift, but inside the contents are so great that anyone will learn from it and be grateful. If you want the best sex book get this.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD SEXY
Very good, sexy book. I gave it to a couple who was getting married. They thought it was a "joke gift" because of the title, but later thanked me tremendously and told me how helpful it was to their sex life!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very well done!!!!
I will keep this short.

This is a good book. It goes into detail about "almost" everything about sex.

Here is a list of things she goes into in the book in good detail.

Female problems
Male problems
positons
male and female "private part" sizes
dating
birth control
seduction
four play
toys

These are just a few of the things she goes over. It is a good book. Get it.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Idiot no longer!
Definitely fun! I enjoyed this book immensely and learned a lot! If you've got questions or need ideas look no farther as this book seems to cover all bases. It is written with humour and common-sense, and is definitely a keeper at the top of my list. I would recommend it to both men and women. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource on Career Management.
An excellent text on Career Management. It is well referenced and an extensive number of case and experiential studies. The text focuses on four key areas in career management : (a) career management as a process; (b) a developmental approach to career management; (c) additional demands on career management and (d) career management for the individual can be assisted by the organisation. This book is ideal for everyone who needs to deal with careers. The first part addresses the concerns of the individual who wants to learn about career management as a process as well as trainers/facilitators, etc who are helping others to learn about the career management process. The send part is ideally suited to coaches and counselors who may be guiding individuals with their careers. The third part is vital for anyone you wants to understand the consequences of the 'turbulence' impacting careers and strategies to adopt. This section addresses concerns like work-life balance, work stress, lifestyle issues, entrepreneurial careers, etc. The fourth part is ideal for human resources practitioners and consultants who assist organisations in the planning, development and management of careers of their employees. Learning exercises help users of the text practice career management skills, too. An invaluable investment not just for corporate and public library but those actively engaged in the career management industry. It is more than a universit
