Dr. Quinn explains, "Teaching...the concept [is] not the key. The key [is] to challenge [others] and support them in choosing to enter the fundamental state of leadership" following one's own inherently contagious example. Excitement mushrooms from the possibility and understanding of how to choose to live in the fundamental state of leadership and consequentially to pervade positive, effective leadership influence.
It is human nature to find a comfort zone and then try our hardest to stay in that zone. We feel safe, secure, and in control in our comfort zone. Sometimes, however, we try so hard to stay in the zone that we exert more energy than it would take to change. So why not change? Change is difficult and necessitates giving up power. Prior to reading the book I felt it was almost admitting failure. Change can be especially difficult when we are acting in the role of leader, and trying to move a large group of individuals toward the fulfillment of a goal or vision. How, then, do we lead and manage change? How do we transform an organization? Leadership is a state of being, which Quinn calls the "fundamental state of leadership". This is a state in which we are open to personal change, and consequently draw others to us by our change in behavior. In the book Quinn gives a detailed explanation of this new model of leaderhip and thoroughly examines the personal nature of change. He gives examples ordinary people who have led extraordinary change efforts. These stories motivate, they bring heroic efforts within reach of the ordinary individual. Executive, middle manager, associate, student, father or mother - all will benefit from this book. ... Read more

Book Description A genuine winner shows you how to stand out from the crowd As CEO of John Hancock Financial Services and the bestselling author of Brand Warfare, David D'Alessandro knows plenty about breaking away from the pack. In Career Warfare, this ultimate insider tells the true story of how he learned the unwritten rules of corporate ladder climbing. In his signature, outspoken style, D'Alessandro offers concrete advice on building a reputation that commands respect, coping with office politics, and surviving the less-than-sane aspects of any organization. He explains why only 20 percent of the people in a given corporation are truly valuable to the organization, demonstrates the right way to polish the boss's image and prevent the boss from tarnishing the reader's, and provides valuable lessons in the etiquette of reputation building. Through engaging, often-hilarious stories drawn from his own dramatic climb to the top, David D'Alessandro speaks to success-oriented readers at every level and explains: Reviews (23)
This book is up there, depending on your career goals. I would say this is a must for anybody working in a large organization or corporate atmosphere. D'Alessandro provides a lot of foresight into things you might not recognize at the time they are taking place, because he's been there already. If you don't like this book and you're not already an executive, then it's probably because this book doesn't apply to your career. If you don't deal with corporate politics, then this doesn't apply to your career "as much" either. Now, if you want to understand why you might have a file cabinet of good feedback and accomplishments but keep getting passed up for promotions by people with little or no feedback then read this book. Your career is more than how good you do, it's more than making your team or group look good too. Your career improvements come down to snap decisions and judgements in places you may never expect, and this book does a great job of explaining that. Now, what I don't like is the political under tones of the book. I think those should have been left out. There are some obvious personal undertones in the book that I didn't like. I liked the book when it talked about career, but I could do without David's personal democratic agenda. One thing really sticks out with me; In one area of the book he witnessed an elderly lady asking somebody else if they thought she could afford some shoes for her Grandaughter. Instead of feeling compasionate, he says it made him realize that he's used to being around people with an IQ over 140. Give me a break. Although he is a CEO of John Hancock, some of his insecurities are very evident in this writing. Kudos to his career accomplishments, but even a CEO isn't perfect and it shows. Overall, I give this book 4 stars based on the material relating to a career. I would give it 1 more star if this book was worth reading over and over again and was lacking the personal agenda evident toward the end of the book when David puts more emphasis on talking about himself rather than staying on topic. ... Reviews (11)
Yet I must admit that while I do not fully agree with many of the particulars that authors Marika and Howard Stone so enthusiastically espouse, I do find their overall message regarding the exciting possibilities for individual achievement and continuing contribution that such a life situation offers the retirement-eligible individual or couple. They embark from the substantial philosophical position carved out by former academic Theodore Roszak ("The Making of a Counterculture") in his absorbing tome, "America The Wise, The Longevity Revolution and the Wealth of Nations"(see my review), pointing out the facts associated with the new and burgeoning potential of the so-called baby boomer generation which is rapidly approaching retirement age with an incredible reserve of both financial and human resources at its disposal. Both Roszak and the Stones both argue for unleashing the human potential in a wave of creative activity, which is socially useful, and personally enriching. What this book represents, then, is an eminently useful and immensely practical resource for people hoping to restructure their expectations, values, and personal experiences about what the retirement years are going to mean for them. Given the realities that traditional ideas about retirement are undergoing a revolution, the Stones provide the reader with an easy way through the maze toward a better understanding of what all the options are, as well as how to evaluate and assess these options and opportunities for a better and more fulfilling experience in the later years of life. And while the Stones find the mantra of life to be closely connected to work and expression through one's livelihood, they are wise enough to recognize other options for others, and encourage the reader to explore whatever seems valuable and worthwhile. This is a wonderful book, a delicious treat for those of us anxiously peering over the fence into the retirement years and wondering what to make of it all. Enjoy!
I've always thought the idea of retiring to be a strange concept. Why would you just give up your entire life? Even if you gave up your job should there not be other interests you would pursue, perhaps even more aggressively than your previous job. It has been said that a "hobby" is more the man than his "job." I jest not when I say reviewing can be quite a great job/hobby. The authors explain how to awaken the inner activist or volunteer. Chapter 5 gives a list of 101 Opportunities you could pursue. I know for sure there is a need for professional people who can keep giving their talents to society. Some of the ideas include: Relocation Specialist You might be thinking, "Hey, those sound more fun than what I'm doing now!" I personally like the "author" and "massage therapist" idea. The authors explain how life is uncharted territory. How we live in a culture preoccupied with wealth. Are we not living our lives to find our deepest purpose? The Contents Include: Money - The Prose of Life After you read this book, you will wonder if retirement really represents the "good life." Well if you take Chapter 7 into account and start traveling the world, this might be just the bliss your soul has been craving. I also "loved" the idea of becoming a care taker. Who would not want to go live in a beautiful location as a property manager? This book is about living in the moment and seeing your new freedom as an excuse to do exactly what you love. Creative and Wise!
The Stones give alternatives to the leisure life, including ideas for new types of jobs such as doula (childbirth coach), Navy contract teacher, and housecleaner. The only vague part of the book is that it doesn't give a complete picture about health insurance; this can be quite a burden financially and fraught with dangers until you can qualify for Medicare. Even COBRA's (carry-over insurance from your employer) are expensive for family coverage and can be a significant part of your (now-reduced) retirement income unless you get another job that has benefits. But I certainly support the Stones' assertion that retirement can be a lot more than golfing and bingo, and if you are of the same suspicion about your own leanings, this book may give you some sharp ideas about life alternatives to that Florida condo. ... Book Description The international bestseller--more than 500,000 copies sold! With their 1994 international bestseller, Dealing with People You Can't Stand, Drs. Rick Brinkman and Rick Kirschner armed a civility-starved world with no-nonsense strategies for dealing with difficult people with tact and skill. Since then, cell phones, the Internet, voice mail, and other technological wonders designed to bring people closer together have only made it that much harder to avoid "people you can't stand;" even worse, they've also created exciting new ways for annoying people to realize their talent for being pains in the butt. Updated and revised for the digital age, this new edition of Brinkman and Kirschner's bestselling guide shows readers how to successfully combat the whiners, grenades, tanks, snipers, close-talkers, pedants, and other rude, crude, and inconsiderate people who can ruin your day at work, in stores, on the street, in restaurants, at the movies, in waiting rooms, by fax, phone, and E-mail, and in cyberspace. Reviews (20)
From the very beginning the doctors failed to engage me, they did not give me a reason to care to use these strategies on very many people. Given their backgrounds in holistic healing and naturopathic medicine, it would seem logical that they would have informed us of the health benefits enjoyed by eliminating stressful people from our lives. Instead this reader found it difficult to relate to any of the proposed situations in anything more than a professional setting. Because of that, this book would make an excellent blueprint on how to manipulate people on your way up the ladder of success. Each chapter was well organized, most beginning with a story that depicted that particular chapters theme. The authors then laid out a step-by-step guide to dealing with this type of difficult individual. It seems a bit naïve to think that one strategy will work for each of the personality types. Some may find it difficult to proceed with the given advice, and therefore it would have been nice to see some alternative strategies given. This would give the reader greater flexibility when dealing with his or her particular difficult person. Not only were the suggestions limited, often times they seemed quite simplistic, almost as though Brinkman and Kirschner believe that people are machines and simply by pushing the right buttons or saying the magic pop psychology phrase we can control anyone. Seldom does it work that way in real life. This tendency is clearly seen in the stories at the end of each chapter. Again Brinkman and Kirschner introduce us to some people in conflict. One character is a difficult person and the other employs the strategies spelled out by the authors. After the techniques are used, it is almost like magic that the difficult person begins to cooperate. Now this would be acceptable as a way to make your point, but often we are led to believe that each story is a recount of a real-life occurrence. So, unless the authors have found a real life magic bullet, they have lost a lot of credibility with this reader. As stated earlier, this book is an excellent source for those who wish to manipulate co-workers and business associates, especially the first two-thirds of it. Towards the end though it does become a bit more personal and even more enjoyable to read. The last section of the book is certainly the freshest. Here we get some good advice on proper use and etiquette on the phone and using E-mail.
The ten types of difficult people are now in my vocabulary, and help me instantly size up a situation so I can handle it better. The authors detail practical steps to take with each style, making it easier to increase your confidence in difficult situations. Most of all the authors encourage the reader to change his or her behavior, and the last chapter even offers the idea of the reader being a difficult person, in order to further reinforce the skills that this book teaches. A real winner, and a book that has helped my career and my sanity.
Another strong point of this book are the illustrations of the Lens of Understanding. They are throughout the book and are very helpful. The Lens of Understanding illustrations help you to see the organizational framework. The illustrations are formatted to resemble the cross hairs of a scope on a rifle. They are an effective visual aide. One of the weak areas are the typographical errors. There are several throughout the book. One example is on page xii. The period after the 2 is missing. Another typo is on page 118, in paragraph three. The word when is spelled ohen. Another weak aspect is contradiction. For example in the Introduction Dr. Rick & Dr. Rick tell you that the difficult person will change. Their statement "While you can't change difficult people, you can communicate with them in such a way that they change themselves. It's a matter of knowing how to get through to them when they're behaving badly.", contradicts itself in several places throughout the book. The authors tell you that you better adjust your attitude. One example of this is on page 68. The heading is in bold lettering and states "You Better Adjust Your Attitude." They tell you to watch your emotions when dealing with a Tank. On page 201, Dr. Rick & Dr. Rick give more contradicting advice. In the seventh ounce of prevention, they tell you to beware of multitasking when on the telephone. Then in the eighth

Gail Evan did not once say "this book is targetted for everyone". She's talking to the women who wants to succeed in the business sense, in a man's style. It represents her insights from her long travel, and it is her belief from experience that these are the issues that held women back from achieving the status they want. This book is for the women out there who is willing to make a change in life so to reach to a higher level in the game. It's not for sulking women who wants to juggle the 12098723 priorities of family and friends before business. (In that case, the book for you is "the 7 habits of highly effective people) Women who decides to rate this book should first put themselves in a mindset that this is not Oprah. As the title reinforces Gail Evan's standpoint: PLAY LIKE A MAN. Most men who play in the field don't COMPLAIN that they want to stay home 8 hours a day for their children, and they don't relate themselves to their bar buddies' private life in every conversation. The book simply gives you the unspoken jargons men made up and Gail's interpretation of the terms. It doesn't tell you "THIS, is the lifestyle that'll be your ULTIMATE LIFE-LOVING experience." ... If you buy this book, keep in mind that the humor is used to support the points Graham makes, and is not the sole focus of the book. This is after all a design book and makes some serious and informative points. Perhaps what is most effective about this book is the thorough explanations she gives on why a design works and why it doesn't work. This is a refreshing change from many other introductory design books that I looked at where the primary focus of the text seemed to be to show off pretty pictures. Pretty pictures are nice, but WHY do the designs work? WHY don't they work. Basics of Design tells you why, and in such a wonderfully understandable way that you remember, and easily apply what Graham teaches. Good job Lisa. When are you going to write more books on graphic design? I'll be sure to keep an eye out for more of your work!
This book covers in adequate detail the essentials and the basic principles of design, including emphasis, contrast, balance, alignment, repetition, flow, the use of images, color, typography, etc. It gives enough explanation with examples for one to get a good grounding on the subject, without getting too technical, keeping the book highly readable. A part of the book also focuses on specific design situations, including logos, flyers, newsletters, resumes, etc. Perfect for anyone with no formal training in design, but would like to improve his/her understanding of design.
This book has (the basics of) everything: typography, contrast, color, flow, emphasis, etc. Most of the books I had examined prior to finding this little gem were nothing more than over-sized "picture books" with writing in the margins, I couldn't bring myself to spend the money on so little information (but they sure were pretty). This book, on the other hand, is mostly text with small, well-selected illustrations, and at the end of every chapter the author gives several "case-studies" of the current topic and walks the reader through each one. I cannot imagine a better book for someone new to design.

THE FIVE PATTERNS OF EXTRAORDINARY CAREERS 1. Understand the Value of You. People with extraordinary careers understand how value is created in the workplace, and translate that knowledge into action, building their personal value over each phase of their careers. 2. Practice Benevolent Leadership. People with extraordinary careers do not claw their way to the top, they are carried there. 3. Overcome the Permission Paradox. People with extraordinary careers overcome one of the great Catch-22s of business: You can't get the job without experience and you can't get the experience without the job. 4. Differentiate Using the 20/80 Principle of Performance. People with extraordinary careers do their defined jobs exceptionally well but don't stop there. They storm past pre-determined objectives to create breakthrough ideas and deliver unexpected impact. 5. Find the Right Fit (Strengths, Passions & People). People with extraordinary careers make decisions with the long-term in mind. They willfully migrate toward positions that fit their natural strengths and passions and where they can work with people they like and respect. The authors have developed a razor-sharp vocabulary that brings welcome dialogue about careers into the new age of business. The executives in this book are all focused on their career, this is one aspect of those with successful careers. The authors have proven that ignoring one's career can greatly supress chances at success. Is it the best book I ever read? No, but it did help me to focus my attention on skills I was utilizing, just not to my best advantage.
The core of the book is chapters 2 - 6, one for each of the patterns: Understanding the Value of You, Practice Benevolent Leadership, Overcome the Permission Paradox, Differentiate Using the 20/80 Principle, and Find the Right Fit. Citrin and Smith go on to extend the patterns to extraordinary organizations in chapter 7. They use specific examples gleaned from their interviews to illustrate each of the patterns. And while these examples are certainly condensed, in order to fit within the scope of a single volume, they generally, if not specifically and in detail, prove the point. What is less clear though, are how technical careers fall into these patterns. All of the chosen examples are CEOs, COOs, CFOs, CTOs, CIOs, presidents, vice-presidents, and perhaps a Director or two. Though they try to generalize these success patterns you are still left with the impression that extraordinary careers are, at least in part, defined by having entered the executive ranks. I am sure that Citrin and Smith would disagree, but I am still struggling with how to apply these patterns to my rather technical career of Software Engineering without becoming a manager. Overall this has been a valuable book - if for no other reason than that it has caused me to think about my career in concrete terms and how I can actively manage it rather than waiting for it to happen. The book isn't overly long and can be read in a week during your lunch breaks. Thinking about your career and how to apply the patterns is where the hard work begins.
I read the book while contemplating what experiences are good for my career. It gives some key insights on careers, such as successful people don't push their way to success, they are carried by those around them. This highlights the need to help others succeed instead of keeping a self centered view of success. While interesting, the reader is left without a lot of lasting depth. I finished the book about 2 months ago, but struggled to come up with key points from memory. If it were more impactful, perhaps I would have remembered them.
This book is a worthy addition to any personal library. ... Read more

After reading the book, I wonder if those positive reviews are because people really didn't know this common sense idea? Could it be that no one wants to admit they actually paid for a book that pretty much points out the obvious? My hat is off to the author for coming up with such a creative title. I would think that anyone who is not happy with their current situation would jump at this book. The real Ultimate Secret is that you already know this, and you haven't taken action and put it to use. Hey, I could have had a V8...
It was hardly "life-transforming" for me - and in fact, made me kind of laugh. This big ultimate secret is as others state here - you must be willing to do whatever it takes to get what you want.Um, okay.I knew that already. That's pretty elementary, no?Yes, the difference between the "average" person and the wildly successful person isn't normally intelligence or knowledge - it isn't that the successful person was "luckier" or even necessarily had more opportunity.Plain & simple it's because the successful person has the knowledge, the opportunity and most importantly, the drive (i.e., the "ultimate secret") to succeed. Perhaps I'm jaded, but I found this "book" to be kind of condescending and silly.Did it teach me anything new?Did it tell me how to find that drive that I might lack?Did it reveal some new philosophy about how to succeed in today's world?Did it tell me how to overcome the obstacles in my way of getting everything I want?Did it tell me *one thing* I didn't already know? No. Did I shake my head and wonder aloud why I bought this & wasted my time reading it?Yes.
