5-0 out of 5 stars Packed With Great Information
As a psychologist who works with lawyers, I have found this book to be an invaluable resource for my clients. It addresses the full range of issues that confront someone questioning whether to leave a legal career altogether or to switch to a different legal environment. No book should give clients the "answer" to their dilemma, and this one does not pretend to. I have found it extremely helpful in how it poses important questions to consider, offers wise advice, and provides in-depth help with resources and information. My clients have found it reassuring, encouraging and informative. It's an inexpensive resource that every lawyer or law student considering a shift in career direction should review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for anyone interested in a law career.
I found this to be an excellent book which contains a wealth of information and references, excellent resources and lists of relevant Web sites, books, organizations & other sources for career guidance, job placement & assistance. I've been a lawyer for 20 years. I'd been trying to work through self-assessment in the traditional way together with others who are not lawyers, and was making some progress, but somehow not getting as much out of it as I would have liked. Then I discovered Hindi Greenberg's book - and the whole self-assessment process came alive for me! I felt like Hindi had written the book for ME. I really connected with it, and began recommending it to colleagues & others in the profession. I've just purchased a second copy to send to my niece who is considering going to law school. The book is up-to-date and well researched - concise, stays on point, is easy to read, & is not cumbersome - a great tool for lawyers pondering what to do next with their careers or how to improve satisfaction within the practice of law, or for people considering law school or entering law as a profession. This book is a career management guide geared particularly toward lawyers, either seasoned lawyers wanting to explore options for a second or different career or different area of emphasis, or new lawyers just starting out and wondering what direction they would like to pursue within a legal career. The book is complete, takes a thorough look at the entire career development process, recommends that you start with self-assessment to discover your personal skills, values, interests, and personality traits so that you are equipped to choose an area or specialty within the law that most fits with your personal preferences, temperament and skills. Then it shows you how to conduct self-assessment and guides you through the complete self-assessment process by providing a comprehensive set of exercises to help you discover your interests, assess your skills, think through the changes you want to make and to set about achieving those changes in your career. It provides MORE than other general books regarding traditional career management because it is directed specifically toward lawyers and people considering a legal career. This book is for anyone who wants to manage, or take charge of, their legal career, and it provides excellent guidance in self-assessment to lawyers and non-lawyers, alike. I highly recommend this book to anyone considering a legal career, and to lawyers considering a career change.

1-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive Rehash
This is a book like the dozens of other career change ones out there - you can find this information in publications from years ago, and with much better advice. No new information, and would only help lawyers who would lack the imagination to think of "legal publishing" or "in-house counsel" as career options. Truly unhelpul.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource That WIll Make You Think
When I picked up this book I knew that I had always had an interest in law, but was unsure if I wanted to work for a law firm. Before going to law school I wanted an idea of exactly what my options might be after school.

This book helped me a lot. I have not made a final decision, but I am definitely closer than when I picked up the book. The two most helpful sections to me were the assessment exercises that helped me think about what skills I have and the last 2 sections on actual jobs available.

If you just want someone to tell you what job is right for you then don't choose this book. If you want/need to think about yourself, your life, your skills, and what you want your job and your life to be then this book is a tool that will help you on your journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book can be a LIFECHANGER!
I read 'The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook,' and found Ms. Greenberg's ideas and advice extremely useful. I found the self-assessment exercises, which most of us lawyers try to avoid, extremely helpful in clarifying why my previous work was unsatisfying and in what direction I needed to move in order to find work that would better fit my needs. The job ideas, extensive resource listings, and insightful comments by Ms. Greenberg also greatly benefited me in deciding upon my next career incarnation. The final assist was when I consulted individually with Ms. Greenberg. She gave me creative guidance, solid advice and wonderful support to pursue my current work. ... She is an insightful, generous human being. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and missleading
Working through this book on a skin care course was very frustrating. The medical terms used were inaccurate and often contradictory.

Althought the basic skin care isues were dealt with efficiently the anatomy and physiology references were not consistent with current medical text books.

This publisher has many better books. Avoid this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great text!
This book is very thorough, up-to-date, and informative. I found it easy to read and follow, and the contents pages are very well-labeled, making it easy to find the desired information quickly. I would highly recommend this text to anyone looking to learn new skills or brush up on old skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars So you want to learn about skin care, eh?
I also used this book as a text in Aesthetics School - and at the time, I didn't appreciate it as much as now - when I'm working in the field. I find myself going back and reviewing what I may have missed the first time.
This book has got it all!
- How to Portray a Professional Image (you'd be amazed how many don't know this! yikes...=0) )
- A History of Skin Care and Cosmetics
- Bacteriology
- Sterilization & Disinfection for salon safety
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Disorders of the Skin & Special Procedures
- Ingredient & Product Analysis
- Nutrition & Health of the Skin
- Client Consultation & Skin Analysis
- Massage Techniques
- and more....

I have the '99 version and found that it has helpful and effective to answer most questions that I may have had.
Sure, there are a few errors that can easily be modified - but they are not worth missing this book over!
Very Comprehensive and easy to tackle. I recommend!

3-0 out of 5 stars update the book
This textbook is practically the only standard textbook that can be utilized by students preparing to become estheticians. However, the book needs to be brought up to current standards. Do not just print a new edition without updating the information, this stifles the profession!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I resently went to school to study esthetics, and now a lisenced esthetician. I found this text easy to read, extremely informative, and very up to date. I advise anyone who is interested in skin to buy this text. You will not read it and throw it away or put it to the side, you will always want to review it in years to come. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice on starting a pet sitting business
Patti Moran gives a complete overview of everything a potential pet sitter needs to consider before starting a business. I was particularly impressed with her comments regarding form of business (i.e., sole proprietorship, corporation, etc), tax considerations, and insurance, because other books about starting a pet sitting business gloss over or fail to cover these topics. Given the disasters which could occur if a business isn't properly insured or hasn't complied with tax laws, this advice is invaluable. My only complaint is that there are an awful lot of references to Patti Moran's new business; she is now engaged in supplying pet sitters with a variety of products, and she constantly refers prospective pet sitters to her catalog and excludes other sources of information and supplies. (However, her catalog does have a great variety of items.) By the way, that isn't Patti on the cover of the book -- I would have liked to see her on its jacket. In sum, you must read this book if you want to start a professional pet sitting business; it will eliminate a lot of the headaches and will point you toward valuable resources.

2-0 out of 5 stars too much like a business textbook
I felt that Patti Moran spent too much time talking about personnel issues rather than the day to day issues of a sole proprieter business. You could find most of the information contained in her book in any generic business text. I would have liked to hear more of the personal experiences of pet sitters, the best and worst parts of their jobs, what to expect, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes right on, sometimes just silly
I have had some experience with walking/sitting for some time with an established agency and recently branched out on my own. I bought an earlier version of this book, so that was my mistake. I recommend getting the 1997 revised edition, as the 2nd one is not at all geared for today's computer literate individual. No type of e-mail, website or even detailed computer database info is addressed, which is understandable given the date of revised publication (1991). At that time, home computer use was in its infancy, unlike today, where owning a home computer is as common as having a television.

On the whole this book provided some very valuable information, even for someone with previous professional experience like me. However, there were some points that were just common sense...such as a rambling paragraph about dealing with a toilet overflowing (due to litter disposal). I enjoyed the business suggestions much more that the home repair tips!

I DO think this is a valuble tool for a starting-off sitter. Worthwhile, but a bit "cutsey". But take some of the filler with a grain of salt- and also, skip the numerous plugs for Moran's product line. I suggest that you call for info from others in your area and obtain their business forms so that you can base your info on real competitors, instead of shelling out for forms you'll use only as a general model.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but...
Good, but the author assumes that you know and seek out other literature on how to start a small business. So if you have no experience with starting a business, and you want to do this type of business, you will need to seek out other books that cover general small business topics like writing a business plan, researching your market, etc. I suggest "How To Start Your Own Business: The Only Start-Up Book You'll Ever Need" by Rieva Lesonksy. I don't know if her title is absolutely true, but it's definitely a good, comprehensive start.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but general information
I bought this book with high expectations, since Patti is billed as the "guru" of pet sitting. The information provided in the book is extensive, but it seems to me that the book is actually an advertisement for the products Patti Moran sells on her website. I thought for the price of the book, we should expect at least one business form to start our business! If you want to buy those, the catalog is free! Overall, the book helps you decide if pet sitting is really for you, and how to go about setting up the business (insurance, bonding, office practices, etc). If that's all you expect from this book, you won't be disappointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jeffrey Rattiner's book hits the mark
When I started out as an independent financial planner almost 8 years ago there was little on the market in terms of well written, content-rich references on financial planning. I recently came across Jeffrey Rattiner's "getting started" book for financial planners. First, I wish I had this book 8 years ago. It would have saved me time and mistakes when I got started. The second point to make is that Rattiner's book, especially the sections on managing client relationships and marketing, is thorough and practical. For example, as Rattiner points out there are important psychological issues at play (denial, guilt, avoidance, etc.) between planner and client that affect the relationship. These issues need to be recognized and managed to forge a productive, long-term association. The section on marketing is also right on target. While Rattiner's advice largely focuses on the new planner, I found his range of marketing strategies to be a good reminder of the broad approach the financial planner needs to take to get the best ROI on marketing spending. Overall, Rattiner is very successful in presenting the various challenges and solutions the new(and experienced)planner needs to address. "Getting Started as a Financial Planner" is money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for any aspiring financial planner
I find the book Getting Started as a Financial Planner by Jeffrey Rattiner as a very valuable source of information for anyone who wants to enter the financial planning career. Rattiner gives an excellent overview of financial planning. He delineates the dos and the donts of the business and provides important tips and insights regarding how to develop a business infrastructure, how to market the practice and how to communicate with the client. He informs the reader about legal issues involved in the practice and about resources and the training needed to become a financial professional. I like the easy style of Mr. Rattiner's writing, the in-depth nature of his chapters and the use of examples and worksheets throughout his book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book !!
I read many business books and when I find one worthwhile I type a summary a page or two long and file it categorically. Not only was this book worthy of a writeup for my personal files but I couldn't get my "summary" under 7 pages. I am a CPA and MBA who was considering starting a personal financial planning practice at some point in the future. That point in the future will probably be much sooner than anticipated after reading this book. It is very insightful and has been instrumental in the business plan I have been working on for a PFP practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Organizational book for a new financial planner
This book has provided me with a lot of useful information in starting a new Financial Planning Practice. The only drawback to this book is that it was written before significant tax law changes took place in 2001. If a new edition came out with that information, it would be excellent!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the Novice Planner
I am looking to establish my own financial planning firm, so I searched for material to read so that the process would be easier. Rattiner authored another book that I read so I was familiar with his energy and commitment to the profession. "Getting Started as a Financial Planner" was a good book. I will recommend it to my CFP classmates at NYU. ... Read more

Book Description

“Jane L. Swanson and Nadya A. Fouad have written a book about career counseling that is user friendly, especially for counselors engaged in helping women and men make wise career choices. . . .The book is unique in that it links five major career development and choice theories to a particular person, Leslie. This case study approach is used throughout the book and provides an integrative thread that illustrates how similar the various theories are, and yet how they differ in important and useful ways.” -Helen S.Farmer, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign“Being able to see how career theories are brought to life through actual cases is such a contribution to the field. Jane L. Swanson and Nadya A. Fouad do a masterful job of bringing theory to life through the lived stories of actual career clients. I very much appreciated the book’s format, the examples, the discussion question, and the richly developed case examples.” -Mary J. Heppner, University of Missouri, Columbia“I especially liked the way this book is organized . . . focusing on the use of career theories and assessment instruments in relationship to a single case. Using this strategy, students will be able to see very easily how both career theories and assessment measures are relevant in practical counseling situations. This book will be an excellent text or supplementary text in courses on vocational psychology and career development and career counseling.” -Nancy E. Betz, The Ohio State UniversityJane L. Swanson and Nadya A. Fouad wrote Career Theory and Practice to provide readers with hands-on examples of how to apply career development theories to career counseling clients. The authors tie together theory and practice in an effective and entertaining manner throughout the book. Woven through the chapters is the presentation of“Leslie,” a fictitious client, actually the composite portrait of several past clients. As each chapter focuses on a different career development theory and presents specific cases, the authors enhance the practical slant of their work by applying the theories discussed to “Leslie.”This book is intended for students in graduate level career or vocational psychology or career practicum courses as well as counseling practitioners needing additional resources to strengthen their services or expand their focus. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A ticket to a top MBA program!
To cut a long story short, this book is your ticket to a top MBA program. It contains everything you need to know in order to apply a winning strategy.

There are a lot of books over there that claim to be complete guides. Their most apparent drawback is exactly that they try to be "complete" guides. They pack information that you can actually find in the school's website or irrelevant information that you'll probably never need. The problem however is that time is rarely in abundance when you struggle with MBA application preparation. What you need is concise information in order to craft a winning app. Nothing less and nothing more. This book sets itself apart in providing exactly this sort of advice. A general strategy guide (the "game plan") that can be applied to almost all b-schools and a couple of pages for each top-30 school that are MORE than helpful in crafting tailor-made information for each school (showing "fit"). In case you need extra info, there's always the Internet, where you can search. You don't need the school's brochures repeated in a book. Not only you don't need them, but you also don't want them. Since they are so similar anyway, you only want the DIFFERENTIATION factors between the schools.

There are many points about this book that make it stand out. It covers the whole application process, all types of essays, it provides sample essays WITH EXPLANATIONS for the key points that are shown. Since I haven't read ALL books out there, I cannot argue that these are unique characteristics. What is unique (apart from the cut-the-b*shit-and-show-where-the-actual-game-is philosophy) is that the authors of the book are available for questions! They maintain a very interesting thread at BusinessWeek forums where they offer free consulting services thus extending the book's usefulness. Besides, they maintain a very interesting website (mbagameplan.com) with up-to-date information about b-schools (deadlines, etc.) and a free essay-advice service. What else could you ask?

To sum up, this book is the first and probably the last one you'll ever need (along with an Internet connection) in order to successfully apply to a top business school. Along with the website and BW-forums thread, it puts competition in shame in terms of total usefulness. In terms of usefulness per page, there simply isn't any competition!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good complement to Montauk's book
This is a comprehensive guide for getting into the top business schools. It contains a number of pointers not usually found in other books that cover business schools and it assists you in devising your business school application strategy. I used this book along with Montauk's tome and I was admitted to Wharton and Tuck, waitlisted at Yale and Stanford. This book is a good complement to the Montauk volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best around for top-school applicants
While Richard Montauk's book may be more comprehensive, it is at times basic and not really suited for remarkable applicants aiming at the top b-schools.

Enter Shrum & Bouknight's superb guide - very focused and intelligent, and highly effective in showing the reader exactly how to build her strategy and position herself successfully for the top schools. The extra tools and complementary features in their website are great added features.

A great read too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the bunch
I looked at almost every book on getting into a top MBA program, and have bought at least 4 or 5. Out of all of those I found this book to be the most helpful by far. I found the essay writing advice to be more accessible and easier to apply than others, I thought their analysis of the particular problems faced by different types of candidates was useful, and I thought their insights into the admissions process were valuable. Other books have more school-specific information, but for the general stuff there is no book that is better.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works!!
I can tell you from experience: This book works! I have been admitted to Haas and Stanford for the Class of 2006, thanks in large part to this book. Before I bought the book I had no idea of how involved the application process is. I definitely underestimated how structured my application needed to be. But this book was the "kick in the pants" that I needed to realize that one needs more than a high GMAT score.

Probably the most valuable part for me was the section on recommendations. Give yourself PLENTY of time to get those taken care of, and expect to go through some re-writes with your recommender. When your recommenders don't appreciate how important this stuff is, you need to give them a ton of guidance. This section alone made the book worth it.

I can't compare this to other books since this is the only one that I bought (in addition to the Official GMAT Guide), but I can say without a doubt that it works! ... Read more

The "Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH)" has been compiled every two years by the U.S. Department of Labor since the 1940s. This is a quality reprint with only one difference—it's much less expensive!

One reason for the "OOH's" continued popularity is that there is excellent labor market information throughout the book, plus extensive indexes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beating the competition
That's what it's all about especially now that the i-banking field has contracted so much. Still, getting the grades, the right recommendations, landing the right internships, going out for a bunch of different extracurricular activities and then finally preparing as much as possible for the interviews are all key to getting the job you want. At least that's what i've found. I used this guide as part of the preparation process, having been recommended it by a college counselor. Best advice I ever got. Good stuff. Very thorough. I've received exactly the offer I wanted. All my work and research has paid off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough preparation
This guide provided excellent preparation material. It covered everything from the pre-interview cocktail session to the follow-up after the interview. The information provided in the guide was clear and easy to follow, so that flipping through for review of specific information was a breeze. My copy is all dog-eared from nervously flipping throught it again and again during my plane ride to perform my interviews. But my nervousness proved unfounded. When I felt stuck during the interviews, I just thought back to what I had read in the guide, and everything went smoothly. I even got to choose among a few of the firms I was really interested in. I recommend this to anyone who wants to be an analyst on Wall Street, but feels like they need a little help getting through the interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and helpful.
This guide is so compact that you can quickly get up to speed on I-Banking interviews in one night, if you had to. It truly covers only the essentials, without the clutter and filler that clogs other similar guides. If you can only afford one and you need a crash course, this is the one to go for.

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
This report was disappointing. A more useful report on IBanking interviews is the Vault.com 2002 Guide to Finance Interviews or the Harvard guide to finance careers.

Sure, some people enter preschool knowing what they want to be when they grow up. But most of us aren't so lucky, and we don't get much help. Some parents say things like, "It's your life, you decide." Other parents go to the other extreme, expecting you to follow in their footsteps. In high school, you take a career test, but many high school students laugh at their test results: the utterly useless, "You could pursue a wide range of careers."

This revised edition of Cool Careers For Dummies provides insight into landing a job for anyone who doesn't know where to look, doesn't have time to look, or doesn't want to suffer through a long back-to-school stint. It's designed for people of all walks of life to uncover rewarding, viable careers or get in on the ground floor of the next Big Things. What's more, this guide even offers tips to make even a humdrum job much better.

Clearly organized by specific topic areas, you can easily find the topics that appeal to you. You'll uncover information like

  • Finding the right career for you, whether you've never had a career before or want to dump your old career for a new and improved one
  • Getting smart about choosing, and making the most of, a career
  • Landing the job you want even if the thought of networking gives you the creeps and you don't have a 500-name Rolodex
  • Customizing your career to make any job better by tailoring it to your strengths and using wise approaches to your boss and co-workers

And, you'll find a fast yet substantive introduction to more than 500 good careers, including many unlikely suspects!

Despite taking career tests, plowing through fat career guides, and spending hours of reflecting, many people end up falling into their careers more by chance than by choice. Not a good way to ensure career happiness. There is a better way. Read all about it, in Cool Careers For Dummies. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A treasure chest of great ideas on how to choose a career.
This book gives you inside information on hundreds of careers, presented in an informative yet fun way. It shows you clever ways to learn more about a career. It shows you an easier way to write a great resume. It shows you how to use the Internet to land a job. It even shows you ways to get motivated to do your job search. I've never written a book review before but this book is very, very good!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book did change my life in more ways than one.
I first looked through the books' 404 pages and found many more options than I had thought. Then I answered the "20 most revealing questions" and learned useful information about whom I am. What makes the book really great is that it goes beyond insight - it helped me develop a step-by-step plan towards achieving my dreams. I did end up with a cool career. Who can ask for anything more?

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
Far too many of the suggested careers in this book are long shots, at best. Nemko makes it sound like if you're willing to get the necessary education or put some effort into getting some expreience, you can move into any of the niche areas he recommends in his book. If only that were true. Too many of his recommendations have long ago been discovered, or are simply areas in which your odds of being selected, even if you are a Harvard grad with impeccable credentials, are about the same as winning a state lottery.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad....But Not Great
I was somewhat disappointed with this book. Although it was organized very well, had a nice index, which made it easy to find things, and was written in a simple, right-to-the-point, easy to read way, the book was a little innacurate when it came to some job descriptions. For example there are many jobs which 5 years ago may not have required a college degree but due to the ultra-competitive world we live in now, they may now require a college degree. This was overlooked on a few of the careers listed. Take for instance becoming a foreign language/interpreting. This has become a highly competitive sought after job and the minimum requirement is not only being fluent in another language but to also have at least a Bachelor's Degree. Having lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, I know how cut throat the job market is so I was hoping that the author of this book was more aware of things like that. Even careers like becoming a police officer has changed quite a bit. Now many police departments require police recruits to have a college degrees, which was definitely NOT the case 5 or 10 years ago. But overall this book was fairly good. I recommend it just as long as you are aware that there may be a few flaws. I also think it depends on where you live. If you are from a super competitive urbanized part of the United States, like the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, or New York, remember that the standard for getting a decent jobs is completely different than anywhere else in the country. In fact I'm hoping oneday a book called "Cool Careers for People Living in California" will be published! Lol!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great summaries of various career opportunities!
I have been seriously considering changing my career at times and just happened to stumble upon Marty Nemko's website just the other day. I was impressed with many of the articles I read on his website and was eventually led to this book. The next day, I picked up this book at a local bookstore (I wanted it so bad, I couldn't wait to receive it from an online order!) I glanced through a number of books on interviewing, resume writing, cover letters, and so on, and found many excellent books focused specifically on those topics.

However, what really led me to purchase this book was Chapter 2 - "The Cool Careers Yellow Pages". The pages are yellow and obviously stand out purposely from the rest of the book. I have thoroughly read through these "yellow" pages more than half a dozen times (in one night), comparing different career options. I also read through the sections on cover letters and resumes, but they were a little too superficial. However, that's understandable as this is NOT a book about writing effective cover letters and resumes, and I was fine with that. It's not what I expected.

What I did expect from this book was to garner some important and key information about different career options, and that's exactly what I got. Chapter 2 makes this entire book worthwhile. I personally have never seen another book that categorizes and subcategorizes careers like this one. I found it a little difficult to find certain careers because I wasn't exactly sure how they would be categorized, but nevertheless, the categories are helpful. If you're a people person, this type of categorizing is what you need; if you're a numbers person -- the same. If you like a mix of both, the category is there. After reviewing all of the summary job types listed here, I now have a much better idea of "where I want to go" with my career. Many of the career listings point to very useful and helpful websites as well, which can give you more in-depth information.

If you're looking for a book about writing resumes or cover letters, this is NOT the book; again, it's too superficial for that purpose. If you're looking for a career (e.g., new college grad) or a career change or are looking to re-enter the workforce after being absent for some time, this IS the book you need to get started. Once you've narrowed down some career options, you can explore the Internet for much more detailed information. This book really helps narrow things down quite a bit - at least it did for me. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for Covey fans!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic.
This book is amazing. Reading it has helped me put together a fantastic CV and confidently gear up for a new year of job searching. Although it's a tad light on the interview process itself, it does a terrific job of exploring every aspect of the academic career in science-including the potential potholes. It also has a large chunk of information about what to expect once you land that tenure-track job--including how to *get* tenure. I'll be referring to it for years. This book has well over 400 pages and it's worth every cent (despite the quite large price tag). I highly recommend it to any academic at any stage pre-tenure.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not say anything new
The book is designed as a guide for graduate students, post-docs, and non-tenured faculty looking for careers in academic science and engineering.

The book has four parts: the first gives an exposition of the world of academia, the second discusses preparation for academic careers for graduate students and post-docs, the third discusses strategies for looking for and applying to academic positions, and the fourth discusses life as junior faculty and the tenure application process.

While the book is well-written and well-organized, it does not provide any helpful information or insight. All information in the book should be well-known to any graduate student or post-doc who is even slightly serious about a career in academic science and engineering.

For example, every graduate student and post-doc should know full well that teaching experience and grant-writing skills are indispensable when applying for an academic position. Every non-tenured faculty should know what tenure is all about and what is necessary in order to achieve it. The book discusses these issues as if these are helpful pointers for success in academia.

The book provides advice on how to write teaching portfolios, how to handle campus tours, how to negotiate salaries, etc. However, there are many excellent books and websites discussing these issues in greater detail. This book is thus superfluous and unnecessary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative

5-0 out of 5 stars Breezy read with great personal stories
I didn't know about this book until I heard the NPR interview with the author. He sounded like an interesting guy, so I gave it a try. It's definitely worth a read for people like me who are looking for a little meaning in their careers!

The book is different from other career manuals in a couple basic ways. The main thing is its focus on leaders' formative experiences. The author does a great job telling stories about what CEOs and Nobel Prize winners, etc were like when they were younger. We see not just their great successes, but also their early failures. My personal favorite was a story about Brad Anderson, the CEO of Best Buy. He apparently took his first job selling stereos just so that he could listen to music at work, and he almost got fired! Hearing about that kind of thing gives me inspiration in my own life. I'm in my mid thirties trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up, and it was very interesting to see how many big shot leaders didn't figure out their own paths until later.

A second key difference in "Nobodies to Somebodies" is that it covers 14 lessons that the author drew from his interviews, but the tone is not stuffy or academic. Most career books bore me, but this one kept me engaged with story after story about the 100 leaders interviewed. By the time I finished reading, I felt like I knew a couple of these people myself. I am planning to use the appendix and find some other books on these people, because they really seemed fascinating.

2-0 out of 5 stars Old Boys Club
Wonderful topic, I'd really like to read this, but....

Looking at the list of interviewes (on the book's website), it is MOSTLY ALL MALE (90%).Most occupation groups have only one token female in among the old boys.I find this absolutely astounding in this day and age.

This limitation is partially understandable with the Fortune 500 CEOs and Noble prize winners, but is this really necessary when it comes to bestsellers/pulitzer prize winners?Or government leaders (we have plenty of female senators & representatives, cabinet members, etc.)Or emmy/grammy/oscar award winners? These groups have plenty of females, so why were interviews limited to mostly male? In the same way that the group of authors was drawn from award winners OR bestsellers, the group of scientists could have been defined to include other prominent scientists besides Nobel prize winners, of which there are many females.

The only group that was evenly split female/male was heads of non-profits.

It would be really interesting to see how young adult women who later became leaders conducted their early adulthood and dealt with issues that men can pass over.Does the author really find excluding females except for a few tokens acceptible or appropriate?Or is the message that females can't be leaders (except for non-profits)?

I would rather leave this book unrated, because this is really a note about the book content, but Amazon requires a rating. So I'm giving it two stars for having a retrograde attitude about who tomorrow's leaders are going to be.From what I've heard, the writing that is there is very interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nobodies to Somebodies by Peter Han
This work has practical strategies on how to succeed in building
businesses. His focus is to transition the reader from the
practical everyday needs to pay current expenses to conquering the
world later. The author asks us to focus on a larger mission or
goal first. He describes strategies to "trail blaze". There are
times when the "random walk" brings us to a successful outcome.
The book cautions us when to stay in a business and when to go.
There are times when a career change can be positive. Failure can
bring on the conditions precedent for us to consider why we failed and develop strategies for success. The author provides a valuable treatise on the practical aspects of pursuing business
at virtually every level. The acquisition is well worth the price
if you implement some of the strategies enunciated.

4-0 out of 5 stars was helpfull !!!!!
would recommend this book to everyone.I found it helpful.read this book before you read "case in point" by Marc P.Cosentino.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for non-MBAs
I'm not an MBA and found it confusing and overwhelming. They assume a certain level of knowledge and only offer cookie-cutter frameworks. I found the book Case in Point to be much clearer and more informative. It's Ivy Case Method makes thinking and structuring the cases much easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't do without it
I had a series with slightly less-than brilliant interviews with a couple of US consulting firms after completing my (part-time) MBA last year here (I am a liberal arts undergrad major form an European school). One of the intervievers referred me to the Vault site and this book particularly to help me correct my alleged "firehose" approach to business cases for... my next interviews. To my amazement, it worked. I gladly recommend it to anyone interested in getting into consulting.

5-0 out of 5 stars best case interview preparation in print
In my opinion, this Vault guide is the best guide available which prepares the reader to excel in a case interview. I suggest you at least flip throug it if you are serious about doing well during consulting firm interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent and essential guide
This guide contains numerous essential frameworks, case strategies, and actual case questions with model answers. There must have been more than 100 cases of various types in the guide. I highly recommend to anyone pursuing a consulting position, particularly with strategy consulting practice areas. ... Read more
