OWN YOUR OWN CORPORATION by GARRETT SUTTON
As a owner of various companies, I look for books that will provide insight on limiting liabilities while maximizing profits. The author has suceeded with this book because it's written with a straight forward approach that breaks down difficult corporate terms into terms that anyone can understand. This was achieved by showing examples of certain situations and unknown facts that can happen to any individual or company.

I really like how the book explains all aspects of different types of corporations to establish depending on each individuals goal to keep their company private or go public. At the same time, the book teaches you various ways to protect your personal assets from your business assets. Just this section alone will eventually save you thousands in personal asset protection.

Most importantly, I've read hundreds of books about corporations, asset protection, public or private, etc. with the majority being very boring with fancy terms that's hard to understand. This book was so enjoyable with simple terms and exciting case situations, I read the entire book without putting it down. I'm now re-reading it and underlining many facts that will be shared with my corporate paid professionals on various situations that my company needs to be protected against. I had no idea but thanks to your book, I do now.

Finally, This book is a "MUST" read for anyone starting a corporation and a "MANDATORY" read for any owner of an existing corporation.

Thanks to the author, Garrett Sutton, I'm now working smarter, counting more net profit and sleeping comfortably in my personally protected home.

Excellent book for those in the B-Quadrant (or want to be)
Having a business without being incorporated is like driving a car without insurance. I was confused about corporations, which kind and didn't want to go to a "expert" untill I understood how the process works. This book did just that.

Groovy Corporate Info
Easy to read. I formed a C corporation with Mr. Sutton's firm after reading this book. They took care of all that legal mumbo jumbo so I could focus on building my business.

I was trapped in big corporations for 20 years - this book helped me understand how to get started...and the "right way" to protect my assets as an entrepreneur.

I only have time to read 2-3 business books a year. I'm glad this was one of them.

Definitely NOT for the layperson
I learned nothing from the book. I was even more confused after I read it. There were no documents to show how to fill out any information. I don't recommend forming your own corporation by yourself. I wanted to take the easy way out, but realized I would've made a mistake. Instead, I took a seminar and I accomplished a lot more and got more than enough information to set one up. Of course, it costs a lot more to do so. However, it is the best alternative. Reading this book almost discouraged me from moving forward. I do recommend reading RICH DAD POOR DAD. It was an easy read,offered a great understanding of developing rich habits, but not very informative on real estate investing.

Good book by sutton, here are some more.
This book by Sutton is right in tune with the Rich Dad Series and stands head and shoulders above other books on the bookracks right now.

A handy handbook for ethical decision making
Excellent. A practical book written by academics. Many books on ethics are hard to read because of the intellectual gymnastics required. Those written by consultants and journalists are often of the cookbook type and artificial. This book is therefore not only usefulfor students but also for businessmen and consultants. This book focuses on decision making within a clearly defined framework with good definitions of the concepts used. It also includes a very good description of relevant laws in the USA. I did not realise that laws regulate so many ethical business issues. For example " The Federal Sentencing Guidelines for Organisations" provide a very good framework to any company that wants to act ethically. Business ethics as defined in the book does not include obeying the law, which I think is correct. Each chapter starts with a practical but imagined case. Many of the cases deal with breaking the law or not. For example "analyse the ethical implication of a woman having to decide whether to go to bed with her boss as that is the condition be puts on her being promoted". Or " what are the ethical implications of dumping toxic substances in the river if you can get away with it by bribing the inspector". One of the principles of the book is that it does not prescribe any solutions. I think that this is pushed too far in many of these cases. I see no point in analysing the ethical implications of breaking the law. My recommendation is to eliminate all of these cases or rewrite them. However, the 15 actual legal cases are useful. They show how difficult it can be to determine what is an ethical and what is a legal issue. The subject of moral philosophies is covered in 16 pages. The authors correctly state that it is impossible to deal with this subject in any depth. The risk with this chapter is that the simplifications made are so extreme that the reader may think he has understood the essence of this topic. That is however very far from reality. These criticisms should however not discourage potential buyers of the book. Overall it is very good.

An excellent graduate level textbook
I have used this text twice in the past as a text for a graduate level course in business ethics at a university in Southern California. I will be using it again this fall and winter. I find that it has a good discussion of theory salted with good real life examples. The long cases are a little dated now, three years after publication, but still are very illustrative. (Some still have "action" occurring even now in the real world.) Within each chapter are an "Ethical Dilemma" (short case) and "A Real-Life Situation" (two-to-three page case) that help to stimulate discussion and to employ principles learned so far in the text. Fresh Ideas on Sales
After reading The Wedge, and applying its principles to my sales presentations, I landed a rather large account that I know a competitor was also avidly pursuing. That alone makes the investment in this book worthwhile.
The Wedge focuses on taking business from your competition, by positioning yourself in a manner that distinguishes your business from your competitior. It is one of the first sales books that I ever read that focuses almost exclusively on the concept of taking business away from your competitors, as opposed to developing sales from independent leads. Given that almost every marketplace is static, with only so many entities available to buy your (or your competition's) product, thinking about and successfully executing methods that get your product before buyers who work with, or may be tempted by a competing product, not only makes sense, but is very wise sales strategy. And I can say - IT WORKS!

I was home-based 'clueless' until I read this book!
I've worked out of a home-based office for years, but didn't have a clue how many things I didn't know about running an efficient, cost-effective business until I read this book. It's a gem!

Not bad for a beginner
If you're completely clueless to running your own home-based business, this is a great beginner (hence the title "for Dummies"). I found the book to work best when you already have an idea for your business. As with similar books, it's great to have a general idea of what type of business you'd like to pursue before reading the book; it will help you better shape your idea.

The book did spend a lot of time talking about how to deal with family problems, creating a quiet workspace, setting work hours and how to get through a project when you have no desire. While some people might find this beneficial, it read like "filler" to me.

All in all, though, it's worth checking out.

Another must read small business book!
I love the books by Paul and Sarah Edwards. They were talking about small, home based businesses before anyone else and their books are thorough to say the least. This one covers everything from the legal to the financial aspects about starting and running a small home-based business.

Great Book!
I was a "travel agent" for GTI and just didn't get the support I needed and found the benefits non-existent. But I found out that I wanted to become a real travel agent. I bought both books from Amazon.com and found How to Start a Home Based Travel Agency the best book for anyone wanting to start a serious career selling travel. The other book is good if you want to join GTI or organizations like that. I didn't find many errors in it at all.

This is the book
While there are typos in the book, How to Start a Home Based Travel Agency is an excellent book that helped me make the transition from store front to home based. After 7 years as a retail travel agent, I was forced to go home-based. I looked at both this book and the other one (Home Based Travel Agent) and found this one to represent the information necessary to make the transition. Tom and Joanie Ogg are well known and respected in the travel business and their expertise goes without rival.

Do yourself a favor, this is the book to buy.

Poor Editing and Terrible Writing
I purchased this book and "Home-Based Travel Agent" by Monaghan. Tom Ogg's book is very, very poorly editted (tons of typos, bad grammar, etc.) It also has limited info about starting a Travel business. Most of the text is generic and would apply to starting ANY business--not specifically travel. I was disappointed with this purchase and returned the book. The other book bu Monaghan is much better.

Look again
I found this book completely unhelpfull and a waste of money. I know nothing about the travel industry and looked to this book as my introduction into it. I am more confused than ever and now have no intention of entertaining the idea of opening my own home-based agency. Thanks but no thanks.

Tons of insightful information, but very poorly edited.
I read through this book cover to cover to learn more about the travel and home based travel agency industry. The information contained within was extremely useful, and provided a terrific overview of the steps necessary to start you own business. Perhaps it made it seem a little too easy to become successful as a home based travel agent, but the ingredients were all there. This included setting up your business, creating a marketing plan, hooking up to the travel provider network, and training involved.

However, I am only giving this book 3 stars because the editing job for this book seemed non-existent. Lack of commas throughout, many typos, blank lines in the middle of paragraphs, grammatical errors, and other basic editing tasks were obviously not done. I can't imagine why this level of polish was left out. If you can ignore this then the book is well worth it for the knowledge gained.

I also wanted to note that the authors promote their own affiliated web sites a little too often throughout the text which wasn't necessary. A more unbiased set of Web links would have been more useful. ... Read more

Pretty basic. A disappointment
I bought Mr Windwalker's book after all the glowing reviews I read on Amazon and I just wanted to make some things clear. This book is great . . .if you are a beginner at the book selling business. If you dont know how to begin, then here's the book for you.
But if you are looking for a resource that covers online sites besides Amazon marketplace, then this books is a sad disappointment. I dont sell on Amazon (although I love shopping here) and Mr Windwalkers biased coverage of Amazon had me skipping huge chunks of the book. Ok Maybe he really feels that this is the most profitable place to sell but this book felt like a lightly veiled sales pitch! Amazon should give it free to everyone who joins Marketplace!
There is some good info here about online resources but there's nothing that you couldnt find yourself with a halfway decent knowledge of the web and search engines. And if you dont have that kind of knowledge you are going to need a lot more than this book to get you started selling books online. By the way. I really hated the promotion of the shipping supply stores. I was really surprised that instead of giving us envelope and box dimensions for items he suggests, the author chose to give us catalog item #'s from the store he uses! Not too subtle.
It would be nice if there was a book out there that did a good job of covering the Tax and records side of things. This book does skim over the topic but that is one area where I feel we sell-from-home booksellers are really in the dark.

Like Having Your Own Personal Coach
This book is a must read if you are contemplating selling used or new books on the Amazon.com Marketplace, or elsewhere. Mr. Windwalker has taken the basics of bookselling and compiled it into an easy to read manual, that is akin to having a personal coach by your side. The resources alone are worth the price of the book, but there is so much more. He clearly explains the steps required to be successful in the bookselling business, as well as the pitfalls to be avoided. Every facet of the business is covered, including important information on providing top notch customer service. I would recommend reading the book once for an overview, then reading a second time with highlighter in hand.

Save Yourself $25,000 Or More.
If you have your heart set on opening a bookstore of your own, read this book first. It will save you the $25,000 or more that you WILL lose in that bookstore. How? By showing you how to sell books and actually make money doing it. I know I've visited many a bookstore that have only hung around a few years until they went under. But now with Amazon these same bookstores are staying in business longer by doing what you should do, selling their books on Amazon. I just went into a small bookstore the other day and the owner said they sell 30% of their books on Amazon. From the looks of the empty store, I thought to myself that they should sell 100% of their books on Amazon. It would make them more money.

This book not only tells you why you should sell books on Amazon, it tells you which books you should sell, where to get those books and even how to sell them. There are no glossing over on the amount of work needed to make money doing this. I know after reading this any dream of making big money selling books online was pretty much beaten out of me. But that is what you want in an honest book; a no-holds-barred look at the work necessary to be successful.

hurting real booksellers
Books like this are a real travesty because they undercut real booksellers who own stores and are trying to make a living out of it. Those who sell online as a "hobby" are the worst because they do not have to worry about any profit margins, as long as they can re-sell a book for more than they paid for it it is a win for them. Anyone who had been selling books for a living would have spent enough time around them to have done the research and know all the things that are contained within this book. So, all I see this book doing is creating an avenue for people who won't take the time to understand books and book dealing to be able to sell books and steal business from hard working book dealing individuals. Don't read this book...and remember book selling is a PROFESSION not a hobby and shouldn't be taken lightly or trifled with. This is someone's life and deserves to be treated with respect.

This may be the best marketing book ever for home businesses
This is really a BIG book, packed with information from the first page. The book is easy to read and follow and it is written as if the authors had you and your business in mind. By sharing many examples of their marketing strategy, they show the extensive research that they put into this book. There is something in this book for every business owner, home-based or not, beginner or seasoned veteran.

Good for both small and large businesses!
This is a fabulous, information and action packed book with all the information you need to market and grow your business. You'll find the authors do not focus on theory but on action and give you a step-by-step marketing plan. Although this book was written a while ago it is still timely and relevant. Not to be missed!

What an Incredible Book
This is a most amazing resource for all self-employed people. The authors have credibility in that they are living the life they describe. Their research into the various methods of marketing used by small businesses is unique. They have interviewed loads of businesses to ensure that this work has real life application. Their resources listings at the end of each listing is also valuable. In addition to the exhaustive research, they write in a clear style and explain not only what to do but how to do it. It is refreshing that they advise people to flow with their natural styles. They also spell out clearly the pros and cons of each form of marketing. This book is bargain of the century. Its value far exceeds the price. Just look at the number of pages. Cut years off your learning curve and but this book.

Filled with PRACTICAL advice. Invaluable desktop reference.
For just a few dollars, you get hundreds of pages (almost 700) filled with valuable advice, tips, and information on how to do your own marketing. This is a comprehensive guide that is a must-have for small business owners. With minor exceptions, the material in this book isn't likely to change that much over time. I can't comment on the book's usefulness to big businesses.

The book is divided into 4 parts and 13 chapters - the first part deals with getting ready to be in demand and sought after, the second part is about creating a winning marketing message, the third part helps you choose tailor made marketing methods, and the last part is about growing big. My only wish is that there was a fifth part dedicated to using the web for marketing your business (this is addressed throughout the book but not in sufficient detail as this book was published in 1998).

The hundreds of tips and information are explained in a clear and a simple fashion that easily lead to actionable tasks. That's the best part about the book on top of the flow of topics. Considering how much material is packed into this book, it will take a long time to cover everything - probably a few months to a year. I have had this book for over a year and still not finished it. There are also lots of references to other helpful sources of related information.

If you own a small business, don't hesitate and just get this book. It will be one of the most valuable purchases, I am sure of it. Good luck with your endeavors!

If you own a business and you want ideas for marketing, this book is for you. There's something in it for the beginner and for the expert, and I don't think you could ever use all of the ideas it provides. I started putting some of the tips to use the day the book arrived (even before I had thoroughly read it--after just flipping through it a bit) and my business saw the results very quickly. The single most helpful book for new caterers
How to Start a Home-Based Catering Business is such an excellent book for newbies. It tells you everything you need to know to get started without burying you in too much information. I bought two other books before I found this one and this one is my favorite by far. I strongly recommend it to anyone who is interested in making extra income through catering. It is easy to read and Denise Vivaldo's voice is friendly and reassuring throughout. The recipes are easy and, more importantly, easy to adjust to your own needs. I tried one of the menus for my first big job (20 people...big for me!) and got rave reviews. I have to tell you that I emailed Mrs. Vivaldo to tell her how thrilled I was with the results and to thank her for writing her book...and she emailed me back and cheered me on!

An incredible value
I don't usually write reviews but a comment made in another review prompted me to write this. The issue of legality *IS* addressed in this book...most home-based caterers know that it is not legal to cook out of your home. In most states this is easily solved by cooking in your clients' home. Or, as is stated in Ms. Vivaldo's book, you rent appropriate kitchen space as needed. What a shame to pick on two words of the book when the content is so valuable to caterers of all levels. The quantity recipes that are new to this addition (which is why I bought this new addition even though I have the old one) are very easy and helpful. As a culinary professional I've read many, many, many books on this subject and I think this one is the best.

Very mis-leading
Let me start by saying that this book has some useful information if you know nothing about catering. My biggest complaint is that there is no such thing as a home based caterer. In nearly every state, town, and rural township in the country, it is illegal to run a catering business out of your house. Just keep that in mind when you buy this book.

Informative AND with quantity recipes!

GREAT NEW RECIPES
This 4th edition has 50 quantity recipes. This fact is understated on the cover...it should be highlighted because this is the reason to buy the new edition. I originally bought this book after I took a catering class from the author. I found the book full of useful advice but wasn't planning on buying the new edition until I saw on her website ... that the new edition included quantity recipes and menus for many types of parties. Valuable to read
E-commerce is a hot issue. This book gives us lots of marketing concepts and it is valuable for marketing students to read. Also, it is helpful for those who are interested in doing business in the Internet. For example, how to market your products and service effectively via the net.

Very difficult reading
Unless you come from a strong marketing background, this is not the book for you. It uses a large mix of marketing and hybrid Internet-ish marketing terms that are very hard to understand. I'm using this book for class as a requirement towards an E-commerce/Web Administration degree and this will definately be one of the books I sell back to the bookstore after this term is done.

One funny example the books gives is about domain names. They blame the downfall of Time Warners Pathfinder website on it's choice of a domain name .... Hello, what does Yahoo! have to do with a portal? What does amazon have to do with selling books? What does The Hun have to do with porn? Yet these sites are the biggest ones in their respective markets.

There are many websites (free I might add) that can teach you more about marketing on the internet than this book can in it's random dribbling incoherent format.

The best primer on running a business I've seen
This is a very comprehensive (and big!) book. It covers all the basic steps you need to know about starting and running a business, from business forms to accounting to buying insurance to employee issues to purchasing. No one subject is covered in great depth, of course, but reading the book gives you a VERY GOOD IDEA of what kind of work you're getting yourself into when you run a new, small business.

Not every chapter will be worthwhile (I pretty much skipped the chapter on how to select office equipment) but most chapters are worth a quick look, and many were worth in depth review. Of all the "basic overview" type books about starting and running a small business that I've plunked down money for, this one is the best, HANDS DOWN!

This book is a complete guide for budding entrepreneurs.
Stop the presses - This is the most comprehensive book I have seen for anyone who wants to start a business. I have seen a lot of books on starting a business and this the best one. After spending at least $125 on books, I wish I bought this one first and saved over $80. If you are afraid you might forget something, this book doesn¹t. All aspects of a business is covered. And what it does not completely explain, it gives you information as to where you can get it. Start Your Own Business is perfect for those who want to start a selling product or a retail store. It might be a little overkill for a service business, BUT the amount of resource information makes up for this. This is what Entrepreneur Magazine does for a living and it is well worth it. Buy this before you start!

The Scrapbooker's Guide to Business - What you need to know BEFORE you invest. A very helpful and straightforward book that discusses in full detail 9 different types of business plans and opportunities for making money doing something you love--scrapbooking. I also found this to be a good general business book that gives good insight in to developing business plans. There was also a lot of online references on where to get free information and sites to visit. This book gave me a whole new perspective on the industry and helped me redefine my goals as an independent scrapbook consultant who sells items on ebay (user name ktscrapbooklady). Outstanding!
Finally a making money at home book that is worth buying! This is an outstanding, easy read loaded with ideas for everyone. The 100 computer-based businesses listed each come complete with resources to follow up on in addition to what to expect in the area of salary. Paul and Sarah Edwards seem to really have a knack for communicating what so many of us are looking for. Of course the book contains all of the important money and business issues as well. I highly recommend this book as a "one-stop-shop" on the subject.

Well worth the money
This is a great book. As someone just begining to think about a home business, this book was very informative. I had had a general idea of what I might do, but this book helped clarify it and even gave it a name. It also gave me some other ideas to toss around. Beyond that however, the book was great in letting you know how to get started, some of the pitfalls to watch out for, and an overall sense of what it takes to start a home business. The only down side I found to the book was the constant references to other books by the same authors to get more detail information on any given topic. It was very frustrating when I didn't have the other books. But I guess their sales tactic worked since I bought two more of their books! I haven't read them yet, but because of this book I am looking forward to it.

It is a complete wast of money.
Even though this book was written a few years ago, there is absolutely nothing in it that could even possibly be helpful. Basically, they just give you a little synopsis of 100 different potential business, from catering, daycare, tutoring, etc ; Businesses that are going to cost you a lot more than you could ever make in profits. And most of the websites they give you(few and far between) and just about all of the newsgroups they give you are gone.

There are many books out there about how to make money at home with your computer, and just save yourself the time and most importantly, the money, and look somewhere else...

Full of great ideas!!
This was a great, informative book! If you are thinking of a home business, or already have one in action this is the book for you. I work from home, but what I got was added ideas that I can combine with my already existing business.

There are 100 ideas for computer based business. Each one has idea's and resources to help you get started. I found the explanation for each was very detailed and if you have any creativity what so ever you take it and go from the idea's listed.

As a licensed appraiser I was VERY impressed with this book.
My career has been real estate appraisals for over 17 years now and I can confidently say that I have read at least 50 books on the topic of how to appraise real estate. This book was very impressive in the content and the layout and how everything is explained by the author. If you are a beginner or have many years of experience appraising homes (like me), you will be very happy if you read this book. Everything from the basics of the business, to details on the Direct Sales Comparison Approach, the Cost Approach, and the Income Approach, to details on how to make money as a real estate appraiser in your own business, are all covered very well and explained clearly - for beginners or experienced real estate professionals.
There were many additional topics covered by this book that I have not found in other appraisal books that I have read. Some of these topics were aspects of the business that would take you many years to learn and come across, or at least I know that was my experience in this business. There is good, detailed information about the type of appraisal accounts you can get to earn money in this business.
If you are a non-appraiser just looking for a book with a great overall explanation of how to appraise your own home or condominium, then this is the book for you. You'll find the book is detailed and easy to read and understand. What you learn should save you thousands of dollars in headaches and time by not making the mistakes that the book will warn you about. It's always better to learn from experienced appraisers, like myself or a book like this, since they will help you prevent making many errors when you buy or sell your house. You cannot rely on your real estate agent or broker since I can tell you from many years of experience - they don't know anything about how to determine the value of a house or condo the way a professional appraiser can do it. Found this to be just what I was looking for.
Overall the book covers many aspects of real estate appraising and the business of appraisers. I bought the book since it was recommended to me by a friend who is an appraiser. The book first teaches some of the basics of the appraisal business and then goes into an abbreviated version of how to inspect a home. The inspection process and advice given is necessary since there are many aspects of a home that need to be evaluated to properly determine the market value as compared to other homes that have sold recently in that same neighborhood. I was not aware of how detailed an appraiser should be when he inspects the condition of a home to do a proper appraisal report. The information I learned was extremely useful to me for evaluating my own home.
The book led into the appraisal procedure and covered many topics dealing with single family home and condominium appraisals. The book does not cover appraisals based upon the income approach which refers to office buildings and commercial buildings. But that's fine with me because to appraise commercial properties and office buildings is not what I was looking for.
The appraisal process covered by the book is very thorough and the content walks you through the entire procedure step by step. The main aspect in the appraisal process of homes in how to get information from town hall and recent sales similar to the home or condo you are appraising. This I found was covered very well by the author.
The book walks you through how to compare all of the important and relevant aspects of a home or condo to recent sales of similar homes and condos, known as the sales comparison approach. The details discussed are realistic with no "fluff" involved and the author gets to the point with giving the reader real life examples that he has experienced.
The procedures covered for town hall were extremely helpful also. I never knew how important it is to be able to get all of the available public information and records on a home or condo before doing a proper appraisal. The book discusses many things to check during this process so you leave no stones unturned and don't get hit with any surprises later.
The book is written in a way that I found was easy to understand and enjoyable to read. I didn't want to be bored with technical details and this book was just what I was looking for since it wasn't too technical or boring. I have read other books on appraising that are very formal in their approach but they don't give you the real life examples that make the book interesting to read and informative in a way that is truly realistic about appraising.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in appraising homes and condominiums. If you are interested in appraising office buildings and commercial buildings then you will need a more technical (and boring) book. I'm happy with my purchase and hope my review is helpful to others.

Excellent book to learn from a pro and price your house.
This is a fantastic book to learn how to decide what the price and market value is for you house or condominium or rental property. There was a ton of great and helpful advice that was excellent and easy to read and learn from. Many appraiser books are too technical and written only for professional appraisers but this book is written in a way that anyone can benefit from. When I wanted to sell my house I knew that I should not rely on what a real estate broker tells me since they just want to earn a commission. So I decided to read up on how to decide what price to sell my house and was able to do that properly with what I learned in this book. Great book for anyone interested in real estate. Highly recommended if you want to maximize your real estate profits and have a top appraiser walk you through the process every step of the way.

I liked this book a lot. Very informative with good guidance
This was my choice for the book to teach me about real estate appraisals. Before my husband and I did a very expensive renovation and remodeling of our home, we wanted to find out what the sales price of the house could be if the work was done. Since we are not appraisers we wanted to learn what a real estate appraiser does and looks for to decide on what a house is worth in the market. This book told us everything that we wanted to know and a lot more. You do not have to be someone with years of experience to be able to understand how to appraise real estate with this book. We learned so much helpful advice and techniques that my husband and I realized the home remodeling and improvements we were planning to spend a fortune for, would have not been a good investment. This book showed us how to determine the value using a what-if scenario that professional appraisers use. We learned that only 70% of the money we were planning to spend would have been a good investment to increase the sales price of our home. The extra 30% would have been an over-improvement in the appraisal lingo which means that we would have been over-spending on the remodeling without getting the increased value and sales price for our home. When you are talking about a $115,000.00 remodeling and improvement job, then that 30% this book saved us is certainly something that my husband and I are very happy to have learned. This book was a great investment for us and has given us a phenomenal return on the purchase price in savings.
