3-0 out of 5 stars A good starting point
This book is primarily a "directory" on how to measure and then improve equipment maintenance management. Mr Wireman describes the basic methods of maintenance with chapters on the pros and cons of preventative maintenance, RCM, TPM and computerised maintenance managing software. It then describes the performance measures that can be used to effectively manage maintenance. This is a very good book for engineers wanting to improve the maintenance function, but if you are after a handbook on how to set up a PM, RCM or TPM program then this isn't the book you want. ... Book Description

Hardbound. This book consists of a selected subset of papers presented at the International Symposium of Linked Employer-Employee Data, held in Washington DC, in May 1998 - to address the creation and analysis of such matched data in an environment that safeguards respondent confidentiality. The conference brought together a wide range of social scientists and statisticians from more than 20 countries.

Three broad themes are highlighted:(1) The analysis of linked employer-employee data. The basic finding of this and the next section is that the firm matters a good deal in explaining the differences in earnings, productivity, and work experiences of individual workers. Linked data allow the researcher to disentangle the firm effects from the worker effects.(2) Econometric issues involved with the analysis of such data.Creating and analyzing employer-employee matched data sets presents a number of new econometric problems ... Book Description

"Long-term commitment to new learning and new philosophy is required of any management that seeks transformation. The timid and the fainthearted, and the people that expect quick results, are doomed to disappointment."

According to W. Edwards Deming, American companies require nothing less than a transformation of management style and of governmental relations with industry. In Out of the Crisis, originally published in 1986, Deming offers a theory of management based on his famous 14 Points for Management. Management's failure to plan for the future, he claims, brings about loss of market, which brings about loss of jobs. Management must be judged not only by the quarterly dividend, but by innovative plans to stay in business, protect investment, ensure future dividends, and provide more jobs through improved product and service. In simple, direct language, he explains the principles of management transformation and how to apply them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book about quality control
When I first saw this book a few years ago at a friend's house I never imagined that I would enjoy reading it. However, somehow my opinion changed recently while I was looking for a good book about manufacturing quality control. This book agrees with all that I believed to be true based on my limited manufacturing experience--the plant worker is very rarely to blame for quality problems, rather problems are usually the result of system issues.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and couldn't put it down. It is a great overview of quality control methods and control charts. I also have Mary Walton's "The Deming Management Method", but I would strongly recommend to just read Deming's masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deming, the Root Cause of Quality Improvement
Having "seen the light" as spoken by Deming, I highly recommend this book and Deming's "The New Economics" to anybody interested in not only quality and business, but anybody working. If you aren't in a position having the power to change your workplace, be prepared to bite your lip when conventional management is used.
When you look at Six Sigma you can see much of Dr. Demings work and thoughts being used, thus one persons short review that Dr. Deming is the real father of Six Sigma. Six Sigma brings more of the cost savings aspect to process improvement which appeals to conventional business.
While people can look at Japan and say they are down now and Dr. Deming is wrong, there are plenty of Japanese companies that follow Dr. Deming's teachings still that are clobbering the competition. Toyota, the 2nd largest auto manufacturer in the world now (yes, ahead of Ford by most accounts) uses his teachings.
Don't just read the words, understand what is being said and learn from Dr. Deming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where Quality Begins
I first became aware of Dr. Deming through the Deming Management method. He affected so much change in Japan and was not known here in the USA. The chief reason for his lack of success here was probably that eliminating fear, one of his 14 points, has never really been a management method of American Management. Today people fear losing jobs, his method of quality was to lead to more jobs and more quality utilizing American pride in work. I do think his method had an impact, look at companies like Xerox, and others who continually improved, yet, our economy is so short sighted, we never seem to get past the view of everything this Quarter...we need to have a broader perspective. I find my coworkers in America to be very hard working people who have pride in what they do and accomplish. If only we would remember the red beads, we would get quality if we provide quality material. Demings last seminar was held in Pasadena, I wanted to go to that, yet I hesitated and well, had to learn from a friend second hand. This is a must buy for anyone who will manage people, engineers and corporations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
It's a shame Deming was only listened to after American Industry humiliated itself in the international markets. It's a bigger shame that they forget their mistakes after realizing them for a while.

Deming is unquestionably one of the most original and brilliant thinkers of last century. This book WILL cause you to change your thinking about your job.

You don't have to be a statistician to understand this book either, b/c the crux of it has to do with a philosophy, and a very intelligent one at that, much more than math.

I liked this book so much, that I purchased a rather expensive autorgraphed version on an auction site, becuase it's really a masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars A quality classic
This is a classic in the world of quality assurance. It is fair to call Deming the father, godfather, grandfather and preacher of the quality movement. This book, written in 1986 after he achieved international fame for helping improve quality in Japan, captures the spirit and ideas that spawned a revolution.

The book captures many of the key points in Deming's philosophy:
1) Creating metrics based approaches to management, without falling into a quota system.
2) Differentiating between problems caused by the system and problems outside of the system.
3) Focusing on both doing things correctly, and identifying the right tasks to approach.
4) Introducing a Plan, Do, Check, Act cycle of continuous improvement.

If you look at this list, the book presents a blueprint for many of the so called management revolutions of the subsequent 15 years: Excellence, Re-engineering, Process Management, Systems Thinking. This book really is both a trend setter as well as highly important body of theory. The theory is relevant today, as many management problems today can be addressed by his 14 points of management. (Example: A reliance on inspection is bad - build quality into the process. This is highly relevant to software construction today.)

So are there any knocks?
1) You're left with many imperatives, but sometimes without positive prescriptions. For example: If you don't do annual performance reviews, what do you replace it with to determine who gets promoted?
2) The book can be dry and hard to follow. Sometimes it is written as notes pieced together.
3) Many of the companies that Deming held up as models have fallen on tougher times. It seems that today Quality alone is not enough.

Having said this, it should be required reading for any manager. The theory is good, and the book should spark your thinking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
Di Pilla's book is an excellent reference for anyone truly interested in addressing slip/fall concerns. This book presents a scientific description of slip resistance measurement, methods for ensuring accurate and repeatable quantification of slip resistance, and recommendations for maintaining slip-resistant workplaces. I highly recommend this text for anyone serious about controlling slip/fall hazards. The illustrations and photos are excellent and the text is clear and direct. If your work requires the investigation, correction, or litigation of slip/fall accidents, this book belongs on your reference shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, trustworthy information, an important book!
Di Pilla covers the full spectrum of slip and fall prevention, including theory, standards, testing, and design considerations. This book, along with Turnbow's "Slip and fall practice", represent the most comprehensive and honest treatment of the topic. Beware some other books on this topic that are put forth by those with hidden agendas. The area of slip resistance measurement in particular is fraught with controversy, and relying on a simple web search will return as much inaccurate and misleading information it does anything of any use. If your work or study involves the prevention of slips and falls, this book is an absloute necessity.

5-0 out of 5 stars "THE" Definitive Text
A superior reference. Written clearly and concisely, it provides practical guidance in all aspects of slip and fall prevention, investigation, and mitigation. Well organized and structured. Thorough discussions of physical and operational controls to minimize the likelihood of a fall for workers and the public.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous book. A great reference.
Burton-Jones' account of the knowledge based economy is the best I have found. I've nearly finished my PhD and have read many books! Most books by academics while good for my thesis yield few useful insights for practice. Unfortunately books written by practitioners are mostly useless. They are too light weight to add any value at all (not just for me, my consulting friends tell me the same thing!). This book strikes a great middle-road. Burton-Jones is a practitioner but he seems to have read everything academics have read! It's original, well researched, well written, and carefully argued enough to be very useful for my research and teaching while still practical enough be a great reference for managers. I particularly liked Burton-Jones' Knowledge Supply Model, his Knowledge Growth Model of the firm, and his clear 'Implications' sections concluding his chapters. It's a great book. If you want an introduction to the knowledge economy it is perfect. If you are serious about the knowledge economy or knowledge management, it should be on your bookshelf (or your desk). If you teach knowledge management or economics (particularly in grad school/MBA), get it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
This book falls squarely into the apocalyptic tradition of business literature. It preaches the end of the world, and exhorts readers to repent and prepare for a new world unlike anything they have known. Burton-Jones has absorbed, organized and presented a mass of data to support his message. The data themselves are worth the price of the book, because they provide ample raw material from which to draw one's own conclusions about the validity of the author's thesis. He has trademarked certain key phrases in the book, and the frequent appearance of the superscript "TM" is a helpful reminder to the reader to remember that this book is at least in part a sales pitch for a consultancy practice. But it is nonetheless important to read this book because while Burton-Jones may be wrong about some things, he is clearly right that a big global economic change is underway, and he sets forth in clear, if colorless, prose a reasonably plausible explanation of what it is and why it is happening. We [...] recommend the book to owners, managers, individuals, students, teachers, and policy-makers.

Book Description

We live in a technological world, exposed to many risks and errors and the fear of death. Know the Risk shows us how we can learn from the many errors and tragic accidents which have plagued our developing technological world.

This breakthrough volume presents a new concept and theory that shows how errors can and should be analyzed so that learning and experience are accounted for. The authors show that, by using a universal learning curve, errors can be tracked and managed so that they are reduced to the smallest number possible.

The authors have devoted a number of years to gathering data, analyzing theories relating to error reduction, design improvement, management of errors and assignment of cause. The analyzed data relates to millions of errors. They find a common thread between all technology-related accidents and link all of these errors (from the headline stories to the everyday accidents). They challenge the reader to take a different look at the stream of threats, risks, dangers, statistics and errors by presenting a new perspective.

The book makes use of detailed illustrations and explores many headline accidents which highlight human weaknesses in harnessing and exploiting the technology we have developed; from the Titanic to Chernobyl, Bhopal to Concorde, the Mary Rose to the Paddington rail crash and examine errors over which we have little or no control. By analyzing the vast data society has collected, the authors show how the famous accidents and our everyday risks are related.

The authors prove the strength of their observations by comparing their findings to the recorded history of tragedies, disasters, accidents and incidents in chemical, airline, shipping, rail, automobile, nuclear, medical, industrial and manufacturing technologies. They also address the management of Quality and losses in production, the search for zero defects and the avoidance of personal risk and danger.

Stresses the importance of a learning environment for safety improvement

Places both quality and safety management in the same learning context

Learn how to track and manage errors to reduce as quickly as possible

5-0 out of 5 stars Management should wake up and read this book-now!
I have just finished this book and it is excellent! This is not just another book on Lean. This is an indictment of executives, managers and concrete heads in organizations that aspire to mediocrity.

These authors have obviously been in the trenches and understand what most of us go through as we try to implement this process. There is great advice and hard-hitting commentary on why companies are failing to get the full benefits of Lean. Check out the Lean Math Chapter where Offshore Outsourcing is compared to a Lean alternative.

Executives and managers have a huge responsibility and they are not (from what I exerience) living up to it. The authors explain why engagement is critical as well as commitment. Management should read this book and then ask themselves a lot of tough questions. Also, the whole discussion on education and institutionalization is right on the money.

This book shows why you need to change and how to do it. It focuses on the whole Enterprise and not just Manufacturing and explains why Lean is not a new fad and why it will not go away.

You are going Lean or you are not going anywhere, and this book shows why you need to do it before you are forced into it by your customers or your competition.

I hope these guys write another book. This is a breath of fresh Lean air. ... Read more

Book Description

Having successfully "reinvented the factory" in his previous books, Roy Harmon extends his discussion of productivity from the factory to twenty-first-century warehouse and logistics channels. Harmon illustrates real-life applications of important warehousing improvements in over 50 companies throughout the world and presents state-of-the-art warehouse designs for high-quality, lightning-fast, low-cost customer service.

Harmon describes superior operations in a variety of environments -- including retail warehousing and logistics, service parts warehousing and distribution, manufacturing material and component storage, and industrial products - that can lead to 80 to 90 percent improvements in a company's capital and inventory investments and operating expenses. To be competitive in the twenty-first century, Harmon argues, companies must create new, small "focused warehouses" that will decrease bureaucracy and increase the authority of managers and work-teams to ensure successful operations. Modern "clusters" of suppliers' facilities in regional market areas will virtually eliminate the thousands of miles products and components travel from raw material source locations through production, into the hands of their customers. Such radical changes, asserts Harmon, will reduce the size and quantity of trucks on highways and increase the volume of more economical rail and water transport of raw materials.

Truly superior warehousing, Harmon argues, entails maximum utilization of all logistics assets, such as manpower, facilities, and equipment: multifunctional warehouseman teams with complete responsibility for an area of the warehouse including receiving, stocking, packing, and shipping; ;modular warehousing designs for fast, nondisruptive additions during peak season; and increased hours and days during which expensive equipment is utilized by adding night and weekend shifts.

Harmon introduces other strategies such as cross-docking -- a procedure used to transfer receipts on SLS Sears Logistics Services' inbound supplier trucks to its outbound trucks -- and semi-automated picking -- a storage and retrieval system used by Yamaha Motor Company in Japan that continuously challenges every aspect of the physical warehouse, its methods and procedures, and its management to create visions of their "warehouse of the future" today. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference but outdated
My instructor at college who is on the Board of NAPM made this the class text. The book is obsolete from its discussion of technology in purchasing but otherwise is good. It emphasizes qualitative methods and is very soft on quantitative analysis of practical business problems. There is a shortage of case studies but overall this is a good book.Being useful to take the NAPM exam, NAPM has expanded some definitions in the book that are not commonly held in other college courses. For example, my instructor docked me 10 points on a question asking for the 4 elements of a contract, which are different from what commercial law and the UCC dictate. NAPM has redefined some terms so be wary.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average, not great
At over $100 this is an expensive book. It has some good information, being useful for Modules 1& 2 of the National Association of Purchasing Managers (NAPM) exams but is quite repetitive in its jargon. Much of what is discussed is generally known by anyone with any significant work experience. More calculations and hard data might be helpful. The book itself is of rugged construction and well made and of convenient size for portable reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thankyou MR. DOBLER
This book is very useful for our purchasing mamagers

5-0 out of 5 stars The core Purchasing text that must be on your shelf.
This is the textbook that every Purchasing professional must have on the shelf. It is written by the gurus in the field that helped to define the profession and set standards by developing the professional certification requirements.

The book establishes common language to describe Purchasing core processes that are applicable across industry and organizational lines. Because of the common language it establishes it can be really helpfull for someone who has been in a single industry or organization for some time that wants to transition to another industry but only knows the terms from their previos field.

For example someone involved in government procurement wishing to transition to the private sector might find the book usefull. Furthermore, it is written in the same language as appears on the NAPM APP and CPM examinations.

I have used the book both in a Purchasing Masters Degree Program at St Marys College in California and also in a Purchasing Certificate Program offered by the University of Phoenix and the material and cases are always well received by the students. The cases in particular are good and provide a common ground for people who have used the book.

There are some other books out there and new gurus are emerging but for now this is still the best.

Book Description

Plant engineers are responsible for a wide range of industrial activities, and may work in any industry. This means that breadth of knowledge required by such professionals is so wide that previous books addressing plant engineering have either been limited to only certain subjects or cursory in their treatment of topics. The Plant Engineering Handbook offers comprehensive coverage of an enormous range of subjects which are of vital interest to the plant engineer and anyone connected with industrial operations or maintenance.

This handbook is packed with indispensable information, from defining just what a Plant Engineer actually does, through selection of a suitable site for a factory and provision of basic facilities (including boilers, electrical systems, water, HVAC systems, pumping systems and floors and finishes) to issues such as lubrication, corrosion, energy conservation, maintenance and materials handling as well as environmental considerations, insurance matters and financial concerns. One of the major features of this volume is its comprehensive treatment of the maintenance management function;in addition to chapters which outline the operation of the various plant equipment there is specialist advice on how to get the most out of that equipment and its operators. This will enable the reader to reap the rewards of more efficient operations, more effective employee contributions and in turn more profitable performance from the plant and the business to which it contributes.

The Editor, Keith Mobley and the team of expert contributors, have practiced at the highest levels in leading corporations across the USA, Europe and the rest of the world.
Produced in association with Plant Engineering magazine, this book will be a source of information for plant engineers in any industry worldwide.

Book Description

This guide to taking your enterprise lean focuses on the steps that management and workers must collectively adopt to transform any organization into a lean operation. While everyone agrees that reducing waste in a factory is a good thing, one must first learn how to recognize bottlenecks, poorly designed workstations, workflow disruptions, and other roadblocks to productivity: then, clear, decisive steps to remove these and all other forms of waste from the factory must be taken. In Implementing Lean Manufacturing Techniques: Making Your System Lean and Living With It, Julian Page draws on experience gained in a wide range of manufacturing environments to provide modern lean alternatives to traditional factory methods. His techniques are fully detailed, practical, workable, durable, and proven in real-life applications, and they are accompanied by step-by-step implementation and evaluation guidelines. Most importantly, the author shows that actions are not enough, the workforce must be taught to accept lean, not have it forced upon them. Examples are provided where necessary, and useful tips and words of caution help guide the reader through sequential steps to becoming lean. ... Read more
