The call for increased creativity in the workplace brings with it a concomitantchallenge: how will the world of cool professionalism stand up to the inevitable heat and volatility that accompanies people's emotional and spiritual lives?Itis problematic to assume, poet David Whyte explains, that you can ask people to createand also to behave. The Heart Aroused explores these and related issues in aninspiring, grounded, thought-provoking way, and is the best nonverse book by a poetsince Robert Bly's IronJohn. Interwoven with carefully selected poems to illustrate Whyte's points,The Heart Aroused is necessary reading for any professional who secretly harborsa poet's soul. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A gentle finger on the pulse of the corporate worker's heart
Amazing insight into the human soul and how the corporate workplace has evolved to stifle personal identity, creativity, and the joy associated with work. More than that, Whyte skillfully and poetically provides the philosophical framework for reuniting the worker with the workplace. Using references from great literature, parables, poetry and prose, and drawing from the great diversity of humanity, Whyte opens a path by which we can regain the joy of working creatively. A book to read, and read again, just to learn how to grow spiritually and remain human at work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry and Transformation
David Whyte, in The Heart Aroused: Poetry and the Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America, writes that "If there is one common experience of complexity in the workplace, it would be the experience of feeling lost... in the difficulty of a situation or in our very arrogance or nervousness over a problem." Whyte was encouraged as a resource to business by Peter Block--a trainer, organization consultant, and author of The Empowered Manager--because the powerful images available in poetry can be liberating in the workplace.

As a lover of poetry, I was delighted when a client gave me tickets for one of Whyte's workshops a few years ago. One of the poems that Whyte recited for us (and cites in his book) is a teaching tale in the Native American tradition by David Wagoner. It was a thrilling personal experience to hear in Whyte's resounding and dramatic voice Wagoner's response to the question, "What do I do when I am lost in the forest?" (shown in part below):

Stand still, the trees ahead / and bushes beside you / are not lost... / Stand still, the forest / knows where you are. / You must let it find you.

Observing Whyte's impact on others in the group (many of them business people) also gave me the courage to use poetry in my development work with business executives, focusing on the symbolic aspects of people's (and organizations') growth potential. David Whyte has done us all a service in demonstrating how powerful poetry can be in "arousing our hearts," in enabling significant personal transformation. I highly recommend his tapes and books of poetry, as well as The Heart Aroused.

5-0 out of 5 stars In My Mind: A Classic
This book is already on the way to becoming a well known classic now but I first encountered it in a very private and personal way at a crucial time in my life when it first appeared a few years ago. I felt very thankful then that someone had been able to speak to the hidden qualities of my work life and set me on more of a courageous path as a result. Having just reread it I realize now why it had such a profound effect on me: The Heart Aroused really does speak to a person whatever threshold of life they might find themselves on. A hearty recommendation then to anyone wondering about the hopes raised by the title, it more than fullfils its promise.

5-0 out of 5 stars "What profit a man...."
Frankly, I found this to be an especially demanding book even when reading it for a second time. Whyte requires of his reader a rigorous as well as truthful self-exploration, and in ways and to an extent few other authors do. As is so often true in other dimensions of human experience, the benefits derived from reading his book are almost wholly dependent upon how much is personally invested in it. As Whyte explains, he wrote this book "hoping it would be read in two ways. First, as a good story about the difficulties and dramas of preserving the soul at work -- in short, a page-turner; second, as a book that could be studied, contemplated, and discussed with others." More than 50 years ago, Mortimer Adler affirmed the value of reading the "great books" because they stimulate and enrich what he called "a conversation across the centuries." I think this is what Whyte has in mind when providing, in the book's final section (a "User's Guide"), a number of thoughts for reflection and discussion as well as for self-questioning. For example: "What is my heart's desire in life? What are some of the particularities of the way I like to live? What are the essential qualities that give me a sense of belonging? How can work be a good servant to my essential nature instead of a taskmaster?" As I now reflect on this book after a second reading, I think its greatest value lies not only in the truth of what Whyte expresses so eloquently but also in what his assertions and questions require his readers to consider as they seek spiritual fulfillment in their own lives. Those who my high regard for this book are urged to read Whyte's other books, especially Crossing the Unknown: Work as a Pilgrimage of Identity and Fire in the Earth; also, to check out David Maister's Practice What You Preach and Tim Sanders' Love Is the Killer App as well as Eliyahu M. Goldratt's The Goal, Critical Acclaim, and It's Not Luck.

2-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't get through it...just too boring
I tried to hang with this book as long as possible, but finally gave up. The writing is murky, laden with obscure metaphors, and quite a chore to get through. I had high hopes for this book, since I am an English major who is equally interested in corporate life and poetry. But I finally lost patience with the author's pretentious, pointless prose. Two stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insight on reaching your full potential
The Instant Millionaire - A Tale Of Wisdom And Wealth, by Mark Fisher

Simply put, 15 chapters of mystery, theory, and psychology. If this doesn't open your mind to a new reality and perspective on your financial self-worth, I don't think anything will.

Mr. Fisher writes this fable in the same style and format of bedtime stories that you listened to as a kid. The author is in fact a self-made millionaire that implemented this process himself in his own life.

This story is based on Mark Fishers experience when he met an old man who passed on his secret to success to Mark. The bottom line is that financial prosperity and a life well-lived are goals we can all achieve if we understand and practice the principles of success.

I highly recommend this book, and suggest you read it to your spouse or children at bed time, as it is an adult fable to be remembered.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book!
An easy to read guide to improving your life. Your philosophy in life needs to be practical and that's where this book helps.

Forget philosophy books that you can barely understand let alone implement into your life!

"Every day in every way..." will do more for your state of mind than a year on anti-depressants. "Be still then and know that I am God" is not clearly explained in the book (ie, its purpose) but presumably it leads to calmness, reassurance and 'detachment'.

I'm still waiting to see long-term life-changing benefits from this book. However, I've had some brushes with intuition, some improved moods and so on. An interesting experiment to do on oneself.

Self-suggestion exercises are well worth doing. This book's comments regarding words being "omnipotent" is a truism most people are unaware of. A real nugget of truth.

Reading this book is a good idea. You'll probably read it repeatedly, in fact, like most of us have done after buying it. Then there are Mark Fisher's other books, no doubt all just as easy and enjoyable to read.

I could add more comments but I'm out of time. Overall, this book is helpful but I think we'll all need long-term perseverance to see our Think Big goals to come to fruition. Hang in there!

4-0 out of 5 stars The secrets of acquiring true wealth.
A friend lent me THE INSTANT MILLIONAIRE, a short allegory
by self-made millionaire Mark Fisher . . . she said it had made
a profound impression on both her and the person who gave it to
her, so naturally I wanted to see what it had to offer me.

The story involves a dissatisfied young man who meets an old
millionaire who reveals to him the secrets of acquiring not just
material abundance, but also true wealth . . . it only took me
about two hours to read the 131 pages.

And in doing so, I kept thinking that the material was not
particularly new (for example, it reminded me of the Napoleon
Hill classic, THINK AND GROW RICH--among others) . . . but
that said, I still got value out of this book and would recommend
it to anybody seeking help in goal-setting.

It will help you determine what is or at least should be important in your life, then show you the way to obtain it . . . money, of course, can be one such objective . . . however, I also kept thinking that it can be applicable toward making career
choices, improving relationships, etc.

Furthermore, in reviewing my notes, I realize that there were
several memorable passages . . . among them:

But I'll give you the key to happiness. With this key you will be able to know beyond a shadow of a doubt at any time of your life if you are happy, if you are doing what it takes to make you happy. Ask yourself this: If I were to die tonight, could I tell myself at the instant of my death that I had accomplished everything I had set out to do that day?

The secret of happiness, therefore, is to live as if each day
was your last. And to live each day to the fullest by doing what you want to do. What you would do if your hours were numbered. Because, realistically, they are. We always seem to realize this when there's little time left. Then it's too late. So you must be courageous enough to act immediately. Live with this thought in mind: I refuse to die without having had the courage to do what I wanted to do. I don't want to die with the appalling thought that society tricked me, that it got the better of me and annihilated my dreams. You must not die with the dreadful felling that your fears were greater than your dreams and that you never discovered what you really enjoy. You must know how to dare.

But to find out whether your job really pleases you,
ask yourself this question: If I had a million dollars in the bank, right at this moment, would I continue doing the same job? Obviously, if your answer is no, you don't like it enough. Tell me, how many people would continue in the same occupation if they suddenly became millionaires? They are few and far between. And those who would answer yes to this question are generally already millionaires. Most of the millionaires I know refuse to retire. They go on working very late in life. I'd even go so far as to say that all millionaires, at least all self-made millionaires, made their fortunes precisely because they loved their work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time - Trite Message: "Believe in Yourself"
There's nothing in this book that isn't already in a bazillion other books. I listened to the audio book, and over 2 hours later, the only significant message to be peeled from the slow-moving, over-dramatized story was simply : set goals for yourself, and believe in your ability to achieve them. That's got to be the most common advice in every self-help, wealth-building, and children's book out there. Sure, it's good advice, but do we need yet another book to tell us that? There was absolutely no tangible, ready-to-apply financial advice in the book. In the end, the old millionaire simply gives the young, struggling, wealth-seeking man $25,000 to start his own endeavor. So it would seem that the way to become an "instant millionaire" is to simply ask an existing millionaire for money. If you really want to become a millionaire, don't expect this book to help.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reincarnation Hogwash
Overall I found this book to be a fun read. There are several difficulties however. First, it indirectly promulgates the idea that to become a millionaire one must take all sorts of great risks. In reality before a risk is undertaken it should be understood at some level. Most people that become millionaires understand the necessity for this. Taking unfettered risk is the fastest way to lose everything. Second, it is essentially Think and Grow Rich tranlated into fable format thereby suffering from the same flaws. Third, it is apparently unable to avoid the reincarnation belief trap. This book is not similar to The Richest Man in Babyon. George Clason's book contains extremely good advice for anyone without the mumbo jumbo and without recommending excessive risk. The Instant Millionaire sounds good but is really not in the same class. There is a certain inspirational element to it however and it is a clever enjoyable read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
This book was so much more than one would think by looking at the cover. It doesn't look like much, but as they say, don't judge a book by it's cover, because this little book is packed with a step by step plan for making improvements in whatever area of life you would like. One couldn't help but make positive change following the guidelines in this book. There is no fluff to wade through. The authors have pulled together information from a multitude of sources and made one concise, straight forward resource.I just finished reading it, and can't wait to start putting it to good use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, sound, inspiring.
This book is a great read and it does what it says. It helps you to see things in perspective and make real, positive change. The steps are easy to understand and practical but it also seems to be well researched and backed up with sound psychological theory. I would also recommend it to anyone working as a business or life coach as I think it explains the fundamentals very well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A moving and uplifting book that gets you hooked!
This is an excellent book for the workplace. It is nice and refreshing to read if you are feeling down about work. I've begun to retell the stories at my workplace and everyone loves the stories. This is great reading for a coffee break.

5-0 out of 5 stars First few tastes are delicious. Any more and it gets bland.
The Chicken Soup series is always a pleaser, but seriously, I've gotten so many of them as gifts etc. Do I really need to read 303 wonderful stories? I'm almost getting numb to them. One book is plenty. Every one seems to offer quality soups and plenty of recognizable people to add credit to the story. I recommend any of the books, but don't recommend going crazy and buying anymore than one or two. The material/message just gets a little repetitive after a while.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very sentimental but still worthwhile
This tape was my first experience of the Chicken Soup series. I had heard of Mark Victor Hansen from the One Minute Millionaire book.
The first thing that struck me was how awfully - there's only one way to put this - American the tape is. Beneath the slightly patronising (perhaps only to non-American ears) delivery the stories are indeed worthwhile even though some suffer from being over-sentimental.
Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice, Inspiring little book
Nice, inspiring little book. I work for an elected official who is a tyrant. I wish I'd seen this book 3 yrs ago! But, fortunately, it's cheered me up enough to get through the next 2 months as he was just defeated in his bid for re-election. (Yippeee!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put this book down

"Masterful. A blueprint for leading from the faith."—John E. Renesch, editor of Leadership in a New Era
For a growing number of corporate leaders, religion and business do mix—powerfully and effectively. Faith in the boardrooms is changing the face of some of today's most successful companies. Over the course of two years, author Perry Pascarella explored this trend through interviews with 47 Christian executives who approach leadership—and business—as a moral calling of the highest order. The result is a business book that is both practical and profound.
In Christ-Centered Leadership, top Christian business leaders show you how such biblical principles as servant leadership and the Golden Rule can turn your workplace into an environment that nurtures extraordinary success based on timeless values. You'll learn how to instill within the members of your team a deeper respect for one another and a renewed appreciation for their roles in a successful enterprise. You'll see how you can achieve success on a multitude of levels by simply heeding the values of your soul. 1-0 out of 5 stars Overly wordy, minimally encouraging
The author states that the purpose is to encourage the readers by showing what current, high-level, Christian leaders are doing (p. xii). However, there is much more about his own thoughts than on what others are doing. And his thoughts are so boringly basic. In fact, I found it very hard to stay awake while reading this book. I am presuming that someone reading this has a (relatively) clear view of Christ in that it's the first word of the title. If you can't figure out on your own that Christ would value people, then read this book. Otherwise, move on to something more helpful, inspiring, or convicting.

4-0 out of 5 stars refreshingly positive view of business
Mr. Pascarella is able, in this book to let the working man and woman know that there are people setting atop large corporations who not only live their lives according to sound, ethical principles, but also conduct business according to the Golden Rule. The book is written in an interesting and easily understood format. Thank you Perry for the reasearch and the work... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, REALLY COMPREHENSIVE Book!
The most important thing to know about this book is that it is REALLY COMPREHENSIVE. Not only does it cover everything you hope it does, but it also covers it from BOTH the perspectives of lower-level employees, and higher-up employees.

I bought this book after finding out that working hard, and STAYING OUT of office politics was getting me NOWHERE, AND HURTING MY CAREER. Especially since I work in an organization where it seems that office politics is all that many employees are thinking about! The book discusses the ineveitability of office politics, and gives you an extensive test to find out how "political" you are yourself. The results surprised me in that I was not quite the "dolt" I had previously presumed myself to be!

Once you have examined your own potential at office politics, the book tells you every possible strategy to get on your boss's good side, and every possible strategy to gain the support of lower-ranking people, as well. One example they gave that I would NEVER have thought of is to pay careful attention to whether your boss prefers written, or oral, communication. I never paid attention to that before-I was giving my boss written memos, because written information is more comfortable for ME, when he prefers to hear things ORALLY.

The book then goes on to describe techniques to grab power in an organization, how to use political information, devious political tactics, political blunders, outwitting difficult people, bouncing back from career adversity, surviving a corporate takeover, and defending yourself against unfair politics. It discusses ALL of these topics from the perspectives of lower-level,mid-level, and upper-level positions. So no matter if you work in the mail room, in the executive suite, or anywhere in between, this book is for YOU. One of the best, most comprehensive books I've recently read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Self Improvement?
Working hard, keeping your nose clean and the promotions will come and you will be successful. NOT. The book is filled with REAL LIFE EXAMPLES of why working hard doesn't always work. This is the best book on the market today if you want to protect what you have and earn what you deserve. The book will also help those who want to move ahead and steer clear of the traps and potholes. Very easy to read and apply.

5-0 out of 5 stars The careers bible
This book is a bible for those who want to boost a career. Life is too short to learn from all mistakes. So this books helps you do prevent mistakes and leads to insight how to use the best office politics without losing your self-respect.

It's full of clear real-life situations to make office-politics-rules understandable. I should have had this book when a started my career after the University. It would have saved me time, being fired and frustration.

Iv'e recommended this book to all my brothers and my best-friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I first must admit I haven't finished it (I almost never finish a business book...) but anytime I've been reading a page I found some really useful advice !

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!

Richard A. Moran has distilled the businessplace into a collection of 355 aphorisms that run the range from the often-overlooked ("Don't get drunk at the company holiday party") to the potentially career-saving ("When you get the entrepreneurial urge, go visit someone who's started a business--it may cure you"). He knows his stuff--he's the National Director of Organization Change Practice for Price Waterhouse and has been featured on CNN and NPR. This collection of wisdom nuggets is packed with chuckles and perfect for Dilbert-lovers. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Never Write a Memo You'll Regret
This book merits a few stars, because its collection of aphorisms is "half-good" and "half-right". However, Moran's witty comments can shock the reader as much as amuse. Frequent references to the "little people" on the factory floor and the admonition to "be nice to receptionists" remind us that the author is part of an old-style middle-managerial clique, adept in the ways of kissing up to his superiors but possibly rather abusive to underlings. Also, the advice to be "open" to new technology and trends gives this book a terribly "dated" feel for something going all the way back to 1994.

5-0 out of 5 stars A profound little book
Because of its size and layout, this looks like a novelty item---a "101 Uses for A Dead Cat" type of book---but it is a profound distillation of wisdom culled from experience in the business world.

It is indeed a good gift for graduates, but since they have little or no work experience they won't get a lot of the aphorisms. As one reviewer noted, the longer you live, the more sense these pithy sayings are likely to make.

Practical, real-world advice contained in the book includes: - Never take a newspaper to the bathroom - Never tell a colleague he looks tired - When you're waiting for someone in a reception area, stand up rather than sitting - Keep track of how you spend your time; someone is bound to ask to you account for it. - Never in your life utter the phrase, "It's not my job."

Sometimes it's difficult to explain why these statements are true, but if you've been around for awhile you know that they are. Buy several copies of the book, one for yourself and a couple as gifts. At $8.00 a pop, it's cheap wisdom you can apply every day of your working life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective Job Socialization Advice
People have intelligences that can be measured in many different ways, including those used for school work, artistry, communications, and social skills. A lot of very bright people in academic and technical subjects are very weak on the social skills side. This book is a great resource for anyone who wants to improve in this area of social skills.

Moran says that he came up with these aphorisms to capture simple organizational truths that everyone should know and some do not. I counted 361 of them.

Some of the better ones that struck me include urging fewer policies and procedures; career planning being an oxymoron because most opportunities are unexpected; not using technical language too much in conversation; testing your understanding of an assignment by asking why it is to be done before starting; admitting that you don't know when you don't know; always bringing a potential solution with every problem you take to your boss; and that being in the right place at the right time is more often the result of preparation than of accidents.

If you want to know the ropes, are new to the work place, are unsure what to do with your colleagues, or know someone who fits this description, this is the best simple book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, read this every 6 months
I've had this for about a year now, and applied several of them. Just re-read it yesterday (only takes 30 minutes) and learnt new stuff. It seems that as I grow, I learn new things from this book. Some which I didn't get a year ago, I do now. Read it every 6 months - the book won't have changed but you will.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep it handy!
There are several books that remind you in telegraph-form of everyday business truths. I read Moran's book a few years ago and still remember and live by many of his maxims. I seem to have lost the book, so I am re-ordering it to keep it by my desk, quote it and even take it to meetings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on leadership and personal growth!
I was very concerned, whether "Emotional Intelligence" can be descibed with words. Especially, when many authors tend to praise themselves and how important their subject is. However, this book is as good as it gets! Even chapters like "Intuitive Flow" are concrete and easy to understand. Furthermore, many examples and citations are taken from bussiness cases and really help to connect the topic with your working life.

Actually, I even bougth a second copy to give it to interested collegues.

3-0 out of 5 stars the value is in the test
I read the translation of this book in september 1997. The thing I like about the book is the test (EQ map) - in fact, I recommend buying the book for taking the test. The book itself isn't that great, especially the link between the test and the rest of the book is ratther weak (to say the least). A more extensive review can be found on my website, 7EQ.com. Conclusion: if you want to test your EQ, buy this book. If you want to develop it, look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Practical Management Book I have ever read
Robert Cooper's book is heads above all the other enmotional intelligence books on the market. The others empahasize to much theory. This author is heavy on practical proven approaches that are based on people be authentic with one another and working together. Granted this book may not be for those who don't have the guts to push themelves to grow to heights not even mentioned in typical management theories. Honesty, putting the customer first, being genuinine, etc... have all but become extinct today. Robert Cooper's book issue's a challenge to all of us. To be the best means competing against your own standards so you can best serve your customers first and making a profit helps you do that better. Bravo Dr. Cooper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotions are a good thing....
Reading through this book, I found myself repeatedly saying, "yes, that's exactly how I feel", or "ha! that's the way things ought to be.". This book clearly indicates what is wrong with the work culture of today. It also explains why, despite making good money, people still feel unsatisfied or incomplete. It gives you a good understanding of how to be a more complete and honest person/employee/manager. A must read for all those who are caught up in today's "intellectual and rationality first" work culture. A must read for all those who feel they are doing good, challenging, rewarding work and yet feel an immense sense of emptiness/hopelessness. Damn good book.....!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book can dramatically enhance your life and work.
I was unfamiliar with Robert Cooper prior to his giving a keynote speech at the national conference of a real estate company with which I worked until recently. I was so impressed with the level of genuine feeling that came through in his presentation that I immediately ordered a copy of Executive EQ. Working a self-imposed seven day week almost constantly, I didn't have opportunity to actually read Mr. Cooper's book until I was recently fired after I buckled under the pressure.

This time off has been a real blessing and a time of reflection, reevaluation and education, and Executive EQ has been a great help with all three. The book opened my eyes to things I'd never considered, including the absolute need for what Mr. Cooper describes as "applied integrity" as a basis for emotional intelligence. The author also spends a good deal of time discussing finding one's unique potential and purpose, and how best to work with others and get the most out of them as well as yourself. The book is chalked full of how-tos for those of us that have never thought in this way before. For me personally, it helped me understand how I'd arrived at such dramatic failure in my striving for self-centered success.

More than anything, I feel like Executive EQ is a welcome departure from traditional books on motivation or success, in that this book lays the groundwork for being genuinely emotionally intelligent as a basis for success, rather than stopping short by giving pointers on the appropriate thing to say in given situations. After reading through Executive EQ the first time and taking notes, I intend to read through again and thoroughly analyze myself in Robert Cooper's mirror. I recommend this book as one of the all-time best uses of my time and money, and encourage all of my friends to read it. ... Read more

Book Description

Since the publication of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow in 1990, the notion of "flow"—the state of optimal experience in which one loses oneself in a task or activity—has become a household word. It has been endorsed by political leaders such as President Bill Clinton and Prime Minister Tony Blair, as well as sports coaches, business leaders, and the Wall Street Journal, which listed it as one of six books "every well-stocked business library should have." With Good Business, Csikszentmihalyi applies the proven principles of Flow to the business world, revealing the specific values that have served visionary leaders who have succeeded in running businesses that are both successful and humane. Good Business is a key text for managers and for anyone seeking to find meaning, enrichment, and satisfaction on the job. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just a great business book
The premise of the book is that our jobs are a primary component in our life and that when we are happy in our work we are the most productive and of the most value to our business.

Mihaly reviews the concept of "flow" from his earlier studies which is a state where we fully utilize our skills and capabilities and how we are able to reach that state and what inhibits us from reaching it. We also learn about our own development stages and how we improve through the combination of

realizing our uniqueness and by valuing human relationships.

This book teaches us about good leadership qualities and how we (being led) can find satisfaction in our work.
Organizational leaders must clarify the goals of a business and ensure it is well communicated.
Three levers are available to managers to enable flow and create a great organization: make the environment attractive and comfortable; imbuing jobs with meaning and value; and by rewarding individuals who find satisfaction in their work.
Flow presents opportunity (such as finding more satisfaction) and challenge (as in the case of changing a job that sucks the life out of people).

Innovation is seen as repeatable through flow - but certain practices must be met such as: stay away from micro managing people; let people know the problems that need to be solved; and how to set and achieve performance goals (prioritizing tasks throughout a company has the effect of ensuring a company
won't meet its goals).

An outline of the conditions for flow:
1) Clear goals - you know your tasks and have the appropriate skill
2) Immediate feedback - you understand the effect of your efforts
3) Balance opportunity with capacity - you always learn to seek opportunity
4) Concentration - don't over think (remember the old 'Inner Tennis' books?)
5) The present is what matters - you exist in the 'now'
6) Control is no problem - you become immersed in the work
7) Time is altered - you 'slip through the cracks in time'
8) Loss of ego - you focus on giving not taking or defending

This book is a quick first read and will inspire thought, take the opportunity to read it.
It is more than a great business book - it is also a book about life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge!
Take a look at the scandal-filled headlines, or just read a Dilbert comic strip about cubicle culture, and the message is clear: the business world is cutthroat, unethical and no fun. But here comes psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi with a contrarian message. Work should be fun, and companies should care about something aside from the bottom line. Using examples such as clothing maker Patagonia and investment pioneer Sir John Templeton, Csikszentmihalyi makes a convincing case that profits must come after meaning. Patagonia, for instance, lets workers take surf breaks, and Templeton became a model of full engagement. We suggest this book to any manager seeking a better way to do things, and to any employee hankering for deeper job satisfaction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for business leaders
A brilliant work taking the author's concept of FLOW and applying it specifically to work and business. The approach may have been taken previously ... though never so well or so clearly. There are practical, concrete matters addressed as well as the overall psychology of FLOW. It quickly becomes clear why some employees stagnate in their work, even though they may be highly skilled. There is much that business owners, managers and leaders can take away to enhance their own lives, the lives of their employees and of society on the whole. And the not-so-surprising outcome of these endeavors is greater success for individuals and for the business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Work Makes You Happy
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is the Hungarian-born writer of the bestseller Flow. This professor of Psychology and Education at the University of Chicago has been studying this concept of Flow for many years and has written several interesting books, among which Flow (1990) and Finding Flow (1997). Now he has written a new book: Good Business. It turns out to be just the book I hoped he would write: a book about Flow and work.

=WORK CAN CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR WELL-BEING!=
Although many people view work primarily negatively, it can actually contribute importantly to your well-being, more so than gaining more and more possessions. And because work is so important, it is vital that managers and employees create conditions in which good work can happen. But what is good work? It is enjoying doing your best while at the same time contributing to something beyond yourself. Csikszentmihalyi explains how this can be achieved through two processes: 1) experiencing flow and 2) growth toward complexity. What precisely do these two things mean?

1. Experiencing Flow
In situations of flow, tasks demand the full involvement of the person. In these situations there is a perfect balance between the challenge of the task and the skills of the person. The so-called 'flow channel' represents optimal experience, where both challenges and skills lie above the average level. More challenge than skill leads to arousal, anxiety, or worry. More skill than challenge leads to control, relaxation, or boredom. Flow depends on eight conditions: 1) goals are clear, 2) feedback is immediate, 3) a balance between opportunity and capacity, 4) concentration deepens, 5) the present is what matters, 6) control is no problem, 7) the sense of time is altered, 8) the loss of ego.

2. Growth Toward Complexity
People flourish when in their activities there is a trajectory of growth that results in the development of increasing emotional, cognitive and social complexity. With complexity two processes happen at once: a) DIFFERENTIATION: realizing that we are unique individuals, responsible for our own survival and well being, b) INTEGRATION: the realization that however unique we are, we are also part of a larger whole.

Conclusion: Regularly experiencing flow plus growing toward complexity are the ingredients of good work. But what about the 'happy' part? How can it be that pleasurable activities, products and relaxation are less important for happiness than the hard work of flow and complexity?

=PLEASURE VERSUS ENJOYMENT =
Csikszentmihalyi contrasts pleasure with enjoyment. He explains pleasure is nice but also conservative and leading to equilibrium while enjoyment is like happiness in action leading to greater skills. Enjoyment leads to a "triumph over the forces of entropy" and is like building psychological capital. Too bad that our materialistic and marketing-dominated culture emphasizes the importance of pleasure over enjoyment, since enjoyment is far more likely to lead to long term happiness!

=WHAT CAN MANAGERS AND EMPLOYEES DO? =
Managers and employees can do quite a lot to advance conditions of flow and complexity. The book does not provide a simple list but the reader will probably get many ideas.
As a manager I could take the eight conditions of flow and the two aspects of complexity and use them to rethink work and the way I interact with my employees. Doing that I would recognize I need to (among other things) create attractive working conditions (with clear goals, feedback, etc), provide a good degree of control to stimulate the development of employees and build an organization with a long term purpose people can relate to. Another I could do is start a one-on-one or group dialogue with employees about these flow and complexity principles in order to improve work.

Employees also can do a lot. As an employee I could do certain things to improve my objective work conditions. I could ask for clearer goals, and more specific and timely feedback. I could negotiate with my manager to get more autonomy and more flexibility in time schedules. Further, I could change the way I look at and what I expect from work. If I indeed believe that the hard work of flow and complexity indeed improves the quality of my life ...... I could resist the temptation to cut corners (doing my work with as little effort as possible) and instead pay attention more closely to the complexity of my tasks. In terms of my career development I could think about what kind of products I really believe in and what kind of company I truly would like to be part of.

=CONCLUSION =
The book contains a great framework, is well written and contains good examples. The one I liked best is the anecdote about the brother of the author, Moricz. It was not until his eighties that Moricz took up the hobby of the collection and study of crystals. Moricz describes a flow experience he had when looking at one of his crystals.
"I was looking at this thing just yesterday," he said, smiling. "It was nine in the morning when I put it under the microscope. Outside it was sunny, just like today. I kept turning the rock around, looking at all the fissures, the intrusions, the dozen or more different crystal formations inside and around...then I looked up, and thought that a storm must be coming, because it had gotten so dark...the I realized that it was not overcast, but the sun had been setting - it was past seven in the evening."

I think this is a wonderful book. I would, however, have liked the book even more if it had been still a bit more practical. Still, I recommend this book highly for anyone searching for ways to improve work and careers. I think Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (who seems to be a great example of his own theory) has something to offer of great value for them.

Coert Visser, m-cc.nl

5-0 out of 5 stars Hits the nail squarely on the head!
As usual, Mihaly is insightful in articulating the true elements of happiness, this time in the context of work and modern business. He applies over a quarter of a century of solid research into "flow," this time indicating how leaders can use these ideas in the workplace. Heartily recommended! ... Read more

Book Description

From Dagwood to Dilbert, the past fifty years haven't seen much evolution in our attitudes toward work. Too many of us still believe that our work selves and our real selves, our professional and personal lives, are separate entities. This book is about how that concept is slowly, but surely, changing. It is about why it is changing. And, most important, it is about why it must change. C. Michael Thompson takes a compelling look at the connection between our inner lives and our work lives and shows how the development of the individual spirit can trigger not just personal fulfillment, but much-needed organizational change.

2-0 out of 5 stars A good start, but finishes weak
I had high expectations of this book but was let down. The author starts on the right foot but loses momentum. I got to the middle of the book and felt that the only way to live a congruent life is to leave my job and become a monk! His tone and attitude toward work are VERY negative. The author is also very "preachy". He is pretentious and writes in "holier that thou" language. Awakening Corporate Soul is much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid prose for life the congruent life
C. Michael Thompson does an excellent job with a challenging subject. A challenging book to read because you have to really think through the issues, ideas and concept presented. Very timely book, given the issues of business, life and how to balance the competing demands. Well thought out concepts, good use of example and appropriate use of concepts. I have had this on my bedside and travel bag for the past year, and I am still digesting all the wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Catalyst for Change
I had the great fortune of meeting Michael Thompson at a Leadership course I was attending, and after spending several hours with him, I realized he had a message to deliver to me and to others. I picked up his book, The Congruent Life, and after reading it and re-reading it, I was able to start to make sense of my place in life. Reading this book has been a catalyst for change in my life.
For the masses out there looking for meaning in their work, for those feeling disconnected and lost, Michael Thompson has crafted a resource that will not only help you find your way, but will help you understand why you were lost to begin with. He not only points you in the right direction, but gives you the map and compass.
The Congruent Life is the single best resource I have come accross addressing spirituality, the meaning of work, developmental theory, and personal growth.
The Congruent Life sits on my desktop, right next to M. Scott Peck's The Road Less Traveled. Do yourself a favor, and pick it up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bold Book
In this bold book, courageously written by an author who has tasted business success and found it bland, we are challenged to rethink the values we have been taught since preschool-that "success" is measured in quantitative terms, that "happiness" is having the most toys, and that "making it" in business means you have to sacrifice all other aspects of your life-especially the spiritual aspect. He quickly points out that "spiritual" and "religious" are not the same thing. Then he makes a strong case for the idea that, to be an effective leader of an organization, one must be a "deeply spiritual" person. Instead of seeing how fast we can fly around the light bulb, we must consider the value of solitude, of reflection, of self-knowledge, of acknowledging that the world does not revolve around us. Instead, we can live the congruent life only when we connect with a power beyond our own. He makes it clear that all of the world's great religions-Judaism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism, call for this connection. Being spiritually connected does not guarantee business success. Spiritual connection guarantees that, whether or not you are "successful", your life will be richer, more satisfying, more congruent-and the lives of those around you will be enriched as well. You will be a true leader-a servant leader.

A master motivator who guided Notre Dame to the 1988 national college football championship, Lou Holtz knows how to win big on and off the gridiron. For business leaders, for recent college graduates struggling on their first job, or for just about anyone who wants to get ahead, Holtz devises a game plan for success: dream, believe, and achieve. "Write down everything you hope to achieve in life," Holtz writes. "Then make sure you do something every day to realize one of your dreams. You are going to encounter adversity but you will also ... take big, satisfying bites out of life."

Holtz believes that people are capable of achieving just about anything if they learn to tap into the unrelenting powers inside themselves. He illustrates his points by drawing from moments in his rags-to-riches career as one of America's best college football coaches. Holtz's formula is simple: He calls it "WIN" or "What's Important Now." Holtz writes that if he can do it, anyone can. Despite being raised poor in a beat Ohio river town, later devastated by his parents' divorce, Holtz ended up with the best college football job in the country. Clearly, Holtz can get into the end zone. Follow his advice, and maybe you will, too. --Dan Ring ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one you just can't put down!!
I am a guy who doesn't read as much as I should but I couldn't put this book down. His stories are very motivating and delightful. I have begun to use the Coaches ideas in my professional and personal life. I have established a WIN attitude and I can't stop writing goals for myself. Thank You Coach for your words and enlightening approach to life. I am a big fan of Notre Dame and you but I guess I'll have to stock up on my Gamecocks gear now ! Good Luck and God Bless Lou Holtz and his family.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational, happy, easy read
Gone from Notre Dame now, Lou Holtz remains one of my favorite people of all time. His priorities are straight; Faith, Family, and Career. His book, "Winning Every Day," reads as if he was talking to you across the room. It's filled with all his favorite stories of growing into the person he is today. Lou gives us his "can't miss" formula to success. One of my goals (I have written out) is to meet him and shake his hand. I WILL do that someday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch life and success manual
Wonderful, realistic lessons about life and winning. Several memorable and hilarious jokes, a lot of valuable advice. Two jokes come immediately to mind--the one about Holtz's non-request upon leaving Notre Dame, and the one about the fire truck with bad brakes. There are many others. This book really speaks to people where they are, and because it is modern, is probably more valuable than some of the classics like Think and Grow Rich, etc. Besides, coaches just have a special way of telling it like it is. A winner.

Lou Holtz has written a motivational book based on his coaching experiences. He has taken the lessons he has learned coaching athletes and applied them to everyday living. Coach Holtz will show you how to apply his ten rules for living to your life. He will show you how to become a winner and lead a successful life. I found Winning Every Day to be an interesting book. I believe I can apply his rules to my own life to be a better person. The examples he uses to make a point are interesting. Some examples are funny, some are sad. This is a good read.

Book Description

What would you be willing to do for the rest of your life . . . ?

It's a question most of us consider only hypothetically-opting instead to "do what we have to do" to earn a living. But in the critically acclaimed bestseller The Monk and the Riddle, entrepreneurial sage Randy Komisar asks us to answer it for real. The book's timeless advice-to make work pay not just in cash, but in experience, satisfaction, and joy-will be embraced by anyone who wants success to come not just from what they do, but from who they are. At once a fictional tale of Komisar's encounters with a would-be entrepreneur and a personal account of how Komisar found meaning not in work's rewards but in work itself, the book illustrates what's wrong with the mainstream thinking that we should sacrifice our lives to make a living.Described by Fortune.com as "part personal essay, part fictional narrative and part meditation on the nature of work and life," The Monk and the Riddle is essential reading on the art of creating a life while making a living.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful ... but incomplete.
The insights offered in this book go beyond merely "educating" a silicon valley entrepreneur as suggested by the hardcover title. I like the paperback title better - "The Art of Creating a Life While Making a Living".

The book explains the difference between oft-confused words: passion & drive, management & leadership, risk & uncertainty, comfort & fulfillment, the deferred life plan & the whole life plan. These differences are explained with the example of a business plan that is progessively improved from the initial "Better-Faster-Cheaper" look to a "Brave New World" look.

The book is well-written and easy to read. Those who have read "The Goal" will find a similar organization of ideas in this book. After flipping through the last page, I found myself thinking about the best answers to many questions looming in my mind. These are all good signs about the book!

However, in continuously driving the idea of getting out of complacency and into a 'brave new world', the book did not provide insights on how one may balance the two. Komisar speaks from personal experience in the book and recalls the turning point of his life when he decided that he wouldn't be a lawyer by profession any more. He says that a lot of what he did upto that point was living "The Deferred Life Plan" (do what you have to do now, do what you want to do later). The reader is left with the impression that Komisar even viewed his Harvard education in this light. But would he have been where he is today if he hadn't got an education from Harvard? The progression of events in our life is a related one. Your past actions definitely impact the future. His Harvard education led him to a good job at a law firm where he added to his network of contacts.

In this context, Komisar failed to address the issue that we all *have* to do certain things in our lives. Not everything can be what we *want* to do - e.g., is it wise to pursue a 'brave new world' idea when you're 13 years old? Or if you're old enough, but do not have enough savings to sustain yourself through failure? Maybe, maybe not. There is always a goal we have to accomplish (pay off our debts, take care of our obligations) before we can do what we *want* to do. It is upto each person to realize for themselves that they're living "The Deferred Life Plan" when they truly don't *have* to, anymore. Only then will it make sense (and be more fulfilling) to switch to "The Whole Life Plan". The book would have been complete if Komisar had provided his insights about how one might attempt to balance the two points of view.

That's the only reason I cut out 1 star from my rating.

Bottom line: Get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A pinch of philosophy and a cup full of practical advice
There is no better way to learn than by story telling. In the tradition of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainence, Komisar and Lineback deploy an absorbing narriative to explore a complex topic. The parable explores all the ins and outs of raising capital for a tech start up.

I have been reading and editing business plans for several years, and I will make this book required reading for anyone I work with in the future. There is a discussion of the importance of defining the targeted market for a business plan that is the best I have ever read.

At the same time, the book offers a fine philosophical inquiry about the ultimate purpose behind each business plan. The authors draw a distincution between being driven and being passionate that is very valuable. We are driven to objectives, which may or may not be important in themselves. On the other hand, we are pasisonate about things that matter deeply. Ultimately, the lesson here is that passion should fuel our business objectives.

1-0 out of 5 stars Badly written, Boring & Little (or no) value
Randy tries to present an old concept in an old way. There are tons of books that tell you to do what you feel passionate about, how to succeed in investing and how to love life.

Randy fails miserably in delivering his story that is a mix of all of the above.

With less than 200 pages and big font, there's not much space to say in the book.

Randy, get a lesson on collecting thoughts before you write a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Perspective
Could you be happier in your work? In your life?

Reading this book provides an opportunity to step back from the day to day muck and gain perspective on both life and career. Althought the book takes place in and around Silicon Valley, it provides a means of reflection for anybody no matter where they live or the size of their employer.

An extremely worthwhile read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Took a while to get into, but captured me afterwards
This book by Silicon Valley legend Randy Komisar, beginning with its title, took me a while to get into, I have to admit. I was way into it (page 60+ or so) and still wondering what the big deal about it was. This is the reason why I give it four stars: it takes a while to hook you. But if you stick to it, Komisar has a wealth of experience to share with you, from his first days in the East Coast, litigating, all through his experiences with tech giants such as WebTV, Tivo and Apple.

The main idea presented by Komisar is that you don't need to postpone your life's dream for later, by playing it safe and engaging in what he calls the Deferred Life Plan. To convey this idea, he presents the reader with the process through which he takes Lenny (an entrepreneur at heart, driven by money, who comes to him for advice) in his pursuit to push his Business Plan for Funerals.com into the attention span of some Silicon Valley VC that Komisar knows. Initially a great idea conceived as a community-building scheme, leveraging the Web to assist those in grief due to the loss of a loved one, Funerals.com had evolved into a very basic money-making scheme that didn't have much of a spark to it, tied to the sale of cheaper caskets by leveraging the efficiencies that the Web can bring about.

In the end, if you take away the Silicon Valley specifics, Komisar's point remains not just valid, but a healthy proposition to lead life driven from within, by passion for what you do and pride rooted in leaving a legacy behind you, instead of ambition and short-term gratification. Highly recommended reading for those who are searching for their mission in life, as well as those who are considering pursuing the entrepreneurial path in their lives. ... Read more

Most people come to know of Warren Buffett through his ability to generate wealth. However, as Janet Lowe reveals in her book, Warren Buffett Speaks, Buffett is more than a money-making machine. 5-0 out of 5 stars If you like Warren Buffett, you'll love this book!
I'm a big fan of Warren Buffett already, but I have to say this is one of my favorite books of recent years. It's quite an easy read and very well written. Authored by someone who also appears to be a big fan of Warren Buffett. The book is well laid out, with sections on a number of topics. It imparts a variety of Mr. Buffett's business and investing wit & wisdom through quotes and interesting stories relating to both his personal and investing life. Not only may this book help you become a better investor, but it may also help you become a better person as well. Highly recommended, whether you invest in stocks or not.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good effort in collecting Warren's quotes in his life.
A good introductory into the life of Warren Buffett. Though it was too generalized for me. The price was a bit steep too. It's a relaxed, easy to read book. Overall, you could learn from some of the quotes in the book. Not bad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Random thoughts¿
This books should be called "The random thoughts of a rich old man." It appears to me someone followed Mr. Buffet around and wrote down what ever he said then thought "how do I present this is a book?, oh how about a random collection of dis-jointed thoughts! yea that's it!!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A must read for any investor
The ugly front page had deterred me from buying this book. Fortunately, I still bought it with the strong recommendation of a trader friend. Otherwise, I would have regretted for omitting such an excellent read.

In short, this short book is a concise but wise collection of what Buffett spoke about life, work, running a business, investing blah blah blah. It easily convinces me why Buffetts is the most successful investor (he's the richest guy) in history. Things are always easier said than done, but Buffett proved that he had done what he spoke. I had read many books about Buffett and value investing. I think this is b
