This book does contain some definitions and explanation of health insurance conventions that may be helpful to many. For instance I found the explanation of what to expect from Medicare and the info on Medigap policies informative. Book Description

Historically, financial and insurance risks were separate subjects most often analyzed using qualitative methods. The development of quantitative methods based on stochastic analysis is an important achievement of modern financial mathematics, one that can naturally be extended and applied in actuarial mathematics. Risk Analysis in Finance and Insurance offers the first comprehensive and accessible introduction to the ideas, methods, and probabilistic models that have transformed risk management into a quantitative science and led to unified methods for analyzing insurance and finance risks. The author's approach is based on a methodology for estimating the present value of future payments given current financial, insurance, and other information, which leads to proper, practical definitions of the price of a financial contract, the premium for an insurance policy, and the reserve of an insurance company.Self-contained and full of exercises and worked examples, Risk Analysis in Finance and Insurance serves equally well as a text for courses in financial and actuarial mathematics and as a valuable reference for financial analysts and actuaries. Ancillary electronic materials will be available for download from the publisher's Web site. ... Read more

This comprehensive book presents a systematic and practically oriented approach to mathematical modeling in finance, particularly in the foreign exchange context. It describes all the relevant aspects of financial engineering, including derivative pricing, in detail. The book is self-contained, with the necessary mathematical, economic, and trading background carefully explained. In addition to the lucid treatment of the standard material, it describes many original results.

5-0 out of 5 stars State of the Art
I own pretty much all of the books on quantitative finance
and this one holds a cherished place on my bookshelf.
Anybody either working as a quant or with aspirations to become one should dust off some space on their bookshelf as well.
Anybody who does serious research in finance in either academia or industry already knows that it is somewhat rare for top researchers to pen books of any length. Time is at a premium and the payoff to publishing journal articles or to finishing off code is typically much greater than it is for writing books.

This is what distinguishes this book from its competitors.
The author is well known in financial circles as one of a handful of quants who is capable of meaningfully contributing new results to this fascinating field. The book contains many results which cannot be found elsewhere in the public domain.
Although the book title suggests that the results apply only to
foreign exchange, it is straightforward to adapt the results to

equities, commodities, and many other underlyings.

Wall Street is a very secretive place and it is not easy to get a glimpse of the kind of things that consume a quant's time.
I suspect that the only reason that this book was able to come to light is due to the acquisition of Banker's Trust, the author's former employer. Banker's was well known to be a fertile training ground for the best derivative minds and this book should prove to be a lasting legacy to that view.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to any quants library
Alexander Lipton Lifschitz has brought his extensive
experience and years of research in the most diverse areas
of applied mathematics as well as his experience
in the financial industry to bear in authoring this
very interesting book.

The range of this book is impressive.
Although the author chose to focus on currency
options, his book really is a treatise on
a wide spectrum of problems and methodologies
which any quant wishing to tackle the
sophisticated world of option pricing at a high level
must master.

The author demonstrates his mastery of
the arsenal of the classic applied mathematician,
asymptotic analysis, self-similarity, Laplace
and Fourier transform, and uses these to give an
incisive analysis of both standard topics
such as American options and more exotic topics
such as options on one currency with
barriers on the other currency, passport
options (for which he was a pioneer in developping
pricing tools) , asian options and much much more.

No, this is not as easy a read as Willmott's
books. Willmott's books were and remain
an important contribution with their
quick and intuitive explanation of a variety
of instruments. Lipton- Lifschitz's
book is more challenging and the reader will
have to pull up his sleeves on
occasions where the author, while dealing
with a case analogous to one just treated
says " the details are left to the reader".
But let's face it, if you work on Wall Street
or nearby, you'll have to tackle those details
alone at some point and Lipton-Lifschitz
gives you all you need to know to do
pull this off.

And. last but not least, let's not forget the price. At less than 50$ thisbook is a real bargain and for a first
printing, unusually free of typos or others
errors.

I highly recommend you buy this book now before the publisher
doubles the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book That Was Long Overdue
Most of the books on mathematical finance fall in one of the two domains. Some books are written for people who are new to the field and, as such, do not go deeply into the mathematical details that are crucial for implementing these methods in practice. The more advanced books are usually written by academic mathematicians and sometimes suffer from poor readability and lack of awareness of relevant problems. What many people are looking for is a detailed and readable description of how to apply the latest mathematical methods to solving the problems appearing in day-to-day work of derivatives desks. Such books are few and far between: that is why Alex Lipton's manuscript was so welcome.

As a quant in one of the Wall Street investment banks, I found this book a very valuable resource. Though written on a fairly high level, this book remains a readable and consistent exposition of latest methods of foreign exchange modeling. I particularly appreciated that the author does not skip steps in his derivations and gives out all those little practical details that are so important to people planning to use these methods in their work. The range of topics covered is fairly wide, with main emphasis on derivative pricing. I found the two chapters on path-dependent options to be particularly interesting and extensive. Some of the results included in the book came out of author's original work at Deutsche Bank. I also had an impression that some of his latest work was not included in the book, which is a pity.

All in all, an excellent book. Well worth the price. ... Read more

Book Description

The concept of risk is an outgrowth of our society's great concern about coping with the dangers of modern life. "The Perception of Risk" brings together the work of Paul Slovic, one of the world's leading analysts of risk, risk perception and risk management.

It examines the gap between the expert view of risk and public perceptions of it. Presented in chronological order, it allows the reader to see the evolution of such perceptions of risk over the years, from highlighting public misconceptions of risk to recent work that recognizes the importance of equity, trust, power and other value-laden issues underlying public concern.

New methods for assessing perceptions are described, as are implications for regulation and public policy. In a new departure, the perceptions of adolescents as well as adults, are examined.

In an excellent overview of the critical issues involved in risk perception, this volume examines issues such as: societal risk taking; decision making in mental health law; rating risks; facts versus fears; informing and educating the public about risk; perceived risks and the politics of nuclear waste; and perceived risk, trust and democracy.

Written by the expert in the field of risk studies, this eagerly awaited volume provides an essential guide to all those who have an interest in the public perception of risk including regulators, lawyers, policy makers and the business community as well as academics from the fields of public health and environment, economics, sociology and political science. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Risk book purchase without risk
How often have I wished I had the publications of particularly productive scientists bound together in one document. Despite modern IT-technique, which increases the availability of such publications, an appropriate book is still superior. Now there is such a book for those who are interested in risk from a psychological point of view. Its title is: "The Perception of Risk" and it contains 26 of the most important publications by Paul Slovic from the last 25 years. It starts with an introduction in which Paul summarizes and gives his perspectives on his papers.

No one who has come across the term risk perception can have missed Paul Slovic's name. As one of the leading scientists in the field of risk perception, Paul has covered large areas and tackled various problems in order to show how we view, react to, and handle situations and problems related to what we in common language call risk.

To call him one of the founders of the psychometric paradigm is too plain a characterization of the scientific contribution of Paul Slovic. The psychometric methodology is just the means he has used to study how human beings perceive, judge and make decisions about risk in various situations. He has introduced psychological aspects of risk into natural sciences, where risk earlier has been considered as a numerical and objectively assessable quantity. Now physicists, chemists, and even engineers realize that risk perception cannot be ignored and is influenced by many factors (e.g. voluntariness, familiarity, dread, equity) relating to risk and how risk is described. For those who want to make risk comparisons, inform people about risks or do anything else regarding risk, it is necessary to be familiar with risk perception.

With his great openness, Paul has been able to collaborate with scientists from many different areas, both scientifically and geographically. In this way he has improved and enriched his work with practical aspects in many domains, particularly radioactivity and use of chemicals. Therefore it possible for most scientists to find in this book interesting reading related to their own problems. The book only contains about an eighth (but a representative sample) of Paul's total scientific production. As the papers are ordered chronologically, it is easy to follow the development in time of different ideas and conclusions and to see how later studies derive from earlier ones in a logical way. Thus, in the two last chapters of the book, the ideas and views on risk are further expanded and offer exciting vistas for the future. In the same way as many of Paul's earlier ideas have been accepted and continued by later researchers, his recent views about "the affect heuristic" most certainly will be the subject for many future scientific publications.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read.
This is a must read for all law enforcement personnel, fire departments, emergency medical technicians and especially parents of children with autism. It is so important that communities use this resource to recognize the characteristics of persons with autism and strategies to help should they encounter a person with this neurological disorder. As a parent, this was a real eye- opener and made me realize how much work and education needs to take place in my own community. Thank you Mr. Debbaudt for this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Practical, and Very Important
Debbaudt does an excellent job on two fronts" First, explaining to law enforcment professionals how to identify and deal with autistic people, but also encouraging parents and caretakers to take responsibility for educating their loved ones on how to deal with the police in order to avoid tragedies. People with developmental disabilities are seven times more likely to interact with the police than people without disabilities. This is an important issue, and this book is an important contribution towards helping ameliorate a significant problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Law enforcement ignorance of autism endangers communitites
As a mother of a four year old autistic child, I'm plagued with the worries of "what will happen to my child when I'm gone." As such, we have set up our wills and our estates to take care of him. However, there are even more practical issues to worry about that Dennis Debbaudt brings to light in his book. People with develeopmental disorders are seven times more likely to come into contact with law enforcement than regular citizens. Our autistic children are socially impared, and the ignorance of this disorder is rampant among police ranks and other "first responders" to an emergency situation. Often "autistic traits" can be mistenterpreted as drug abuse, hositlity and beliegerence, dementia, or suspicious behavior that can appear as criminal intent. People with autism have been accidentally killed in crime situations, or have given false confessions to crimes they didn't commit largely due to police ignorance of this disorder.

This is a good primer for police and other first responders. It gives a good overview of why certain investigation techiques are not effecitve in dealing with autism. The second half of the book is directed at parents and caregivers - with good tips about informing local police of your child's condition, keeping your child safe at home, in school, and while traveling. There are also tips on spreading autism awareness to police and other first responders on a grassroots basis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced, unflinching examination of the health care system.
As a journalist, not a health service provider, Mr. Anders brings credibility to his examination of our current health care system. His matter-of-fact style and even-handed presentation of the abuses of the traditional, fee for service model, the positive strengths of managed care, and the responsibility of the consumer in building a workable system further enhance his credibility. In this broad review of health care, Mr. Anders points out that the initial goal of managed care was to secure high quality, affordable, efficient health care by making sure patients received the right treatment by the right provider at the right time. He credits HMO's with redirecting medical priorities to preventive care away from costly, late-stage care. Mr. Anders discusses how the well-intended but inappropriate application of traditional business practices accidently created powerful loopholes and incentives for abuse, in part, because consumers and purchasers were naive about the great potential for unethical profiteering by managed care. The organization of the book makes the complicated issues in health care more understandable. Complex issues are discussed in separate chapters organized by topic areas such as emergency care, medicare and mental health care. Mr. Anders combines factual technical information with evocative personal testimonies from patients, providers, managed care executives and others. Mr. Anders' bottom line is that truly sick, vulnerable or atypical patients are poorly served by for-profit managed care. While Mr. Anders mainly focuses on the dark side of managed care, a great strength of the book is that he does not leave the reader feeling hopelesss or overwhelmed. In his final two chapters, he addresses quality and gives specific suggestions for building a balanced, better system. This easy read is an indispensible resource for those interested in promoting a health care system characterized by compassion, competence, and cost-effectiveness. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst study guide of all time
I purchased the study guide plus CD Rom. Although I have never taken any licensing exam before, I was confident that with a little help, I would easily pass this test. After all, my IQ tested out at over 140, I have never failed any test throughout high school or college, and I have worked in related fields.

Foolish me.

First off, this "guide" was nearly impossible to get through. Read the other reviews, most say the same. There were glaring errors in the math, multiple instances of conflicting information, and completely wrong answers to exams.

I contacted Dearborn about this four weeks ago and still have not heard back.

I blew through the CD Rom exams with better than passing grades. When I took the actual series 3, there was little similarity between the CD exam and the real deal. In fact, the CD prepares you for a 70% or better overall score, while the real series 3 has two sections, each scored individually, with a 70% required on both sections.

Having not been prepared for this, I did get a passing grade on the combined average score, but failed one section individually.

Had I been prepared properly with a different product or class, I doubt this would have happened.

Result: No license, no job.

Thanks, Dearborn! You suck.

Please do not buy this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Crude but effective
This book will help you pass the test. I read the book once, took all the practice tests and got a 93% on the actual exam. If you study the material you will pass. Don't expect a literary masterpiece nor expect to be an expert in the futures industry and you won't be disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Training in house brokers with this is impossible
We are a commodities brokerage firm, liverpoolgroup.com, that trains in house brokers, and now other company's trainees, on passing the series 3. This book is impossible. It is not appropriate or conducive to any type of learning about futures and someone using this book may actually run afoul of compliance issues if they claim to have used this guide for learning.

If you are interested in better resources on learning how to pass the Series 3 don't hesitate to contact me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy something else if you can...
Buy this book at your own risk. I bought this in spite of the two reviews above and have regretted it. It may be enough to pass the test, but you will be extremely frustrated using it for you primary study guide.

Frustration #1: You read a few pages and take a quiz. The problem is the material you just read didn't cover the information! (This happens on about every mini quiz and especially on the sample exam tests.) You have to assume the answers to the exam are correct and use those questions to learn from.

Frustratin #2: Repeated questions in the same exam, quiz etc. Absolute stupidity! One exam of 120 questions had 4 or 5 repeats!

Frustration #3: On the Sample final exams, you get the answers and explanations given to you with a reference to the page number in the book where the material was covered. When you go to that page, You often find that the material was never there. I wasted time trying to find the information in the study material but finally gave up and assumed the answers and explanations to the questions were the only place where the material is covered.

I will probably pass the exam because I have a knowledge of the industry already, but if you are taking this without a vast array of experience already, Good Luck you will need it.

(If I fail the test, I'm think about sending Deerborn a bill for the book and also for the testing fees!!)

5-0 out of 5 stars bad, but all you need
What can I say? The book is bad, but that's all you need to pass the exam. There were so many mistakes in it. Many things were not explained clearly, some were wrong, and there were even two consecutive paragraphs in the text that were identical. In the same sample test the same problem appeared twice, and that happened at least three times. All you sense is stupidity. When I first read it I felt very uneasy. How could anyone pass with only such a sloppy book? The reason is the test is as stupid. There were even spelling mistakes in the test, with "that" instead of "than". Repetitive questions again and again, exactly the same taste as the book. There were about twenty questions exactly appeared in the book. Either the book and the test were from same people, or the book did a wonderful job to track the stupidity of the test. I found problem sets in the book helpful, though repetitive. The hotsheet is useful too. ... Read more

Book Description

Insurance companies routinely use an individual's medical history and family medical history in determining eligibility for life insurance; this is part of the process of medical underwriting. Insurers have also long used genetic information, often derived from family history, in underwriting. But rapid advances in gene identification and genetic testing are changing the way we look at genetic information. Should the results of genetic testing (which might identify a predisposition toward disease not related to medical history) be available to life insurance medical underwriters? Few if any life insurers currently require genetic testing, but there are no laws or regulations prohibiting its use. Genetics and Life Insurance examines the complex economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of genetic information in life insurance underwriting. The contributors are legal scholars, representatives of the life insurance industry (including an actuary and an insurance physician), a geneticist, a genetic counselor, a philosopher, and a consumer advocate. They explore all aspects of an issue that has only recently drawn the attention of policymakers and the public.

The book opens with a report on the results of a public opinion poll on genetics and life insurance. Succeeding chapters present the insurer perspective, a discussion of the economics of risk selection in life insurance, background information on the process of underwriting, a scientific analysis of genetic risks and mortality rates, a philosophical discussion of fairness and genetic underwriting, the viewpoints of consumers and genetics counselors, a comparison of different international policy approaches to the issue, and a legal analysis of antitrust implications when insurers collaborate in setting standards for medical underwriting. In the final chapter the editor addresses various policy options, examining the pros and cons of each one and assessing their political feasibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars An objective and fair look at long-term care insurance
This book offers realistic and objective advice regarding long-term care insurance. The author understands why so many of us procrastinate when it comes to buying a long-term care policy. He really helped me break through the "paralysis of analysis."

I imagine a few long-term care insurance agents won't like the book, because the author tells some war stories from his experience in helping consumers while working for a state insurance department. In fact, the author is a proponent of long-term care insurance and believes that most agents are extremely concerned about the welfare of their clients.

Because he's objective and doesn't work in the insurance industry, I trust his conclusion that long-term care insurance is a very important policy to have, as long as you buy it from someone who is looking out for your best interests. He also offers many ways to save money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Better than nothing, but not by much
This book is too long to provide such a brief overview of long-term care. The message of the book seems to be: you need long-term care insurance. That's it. There is little useful information on how to choose one policy over another and the attempts at financial planning advice would have been better left to someone else. Save the ten dollars. One will fare better with a free government publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Least You Need To Know About Long-Term Care Insurance
This is a great book! It succinctly tells what to look for in a long-term care insurance policy. I especially liked the chapter on important policy features. It's like having a checklist that explains what's important and what to look for.

There are other good books on this topic, but nothing so good at helping you shop for the right policy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Introduction to Long-Term Care
I was pleased to finally find a book that seemed an appropriate introduction to Long-Term Care Insurance. Although I discounted this book one star in its review (because the first chapter is SLOW reading and there are few graphs or diagrams), I must confess that the lack of charts might help the book seem less like a sales presentation and more like fatherly advice. Actually, this book is an excellent choice to provide for YOUR father if he needs a primer on Long-Term Care Insurance; it will make him feel confident when he starts looking at the many companies offering different products. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars An Informative book
If you know little on the subject of variable universal life you will enjoy this book otherwise this book would serve a more knowledgable person little value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of life insurance product (VUL)
This book provides an overview of variable universal life products in the US. It is designed as a continuing education textbook for financial planners and insurance brokers.

The language is simple to read and it provides exercises in each chapter. A review of different life insurance products is in the first chapter.

If you are interested in VULs because you are considering purchasing one, this is an outstanding book to get for the money. It describes how the polices work in a way that is much clearer than what is provided in a prospectus.

Unfortunately, the book does not make recommendations on companies or what premiums are at various companies. For that sort of advice, a book like "New Life Insurance Investment Advisor" by Ben Baldwin might be of interest. ... Read more
