2-0 out of 5 stars Good, yet not good enough.
This book gives plenty of background into international finance. Unfortunately, it has some big flaws, in my opinion. First, there are not enough calculation examples. Second, there are too few questions at the end of each chapter. In addition, you must go to the author's website for the solution. Once you get there, you will be surprised to find out that the author has only solved maybe two out of eight problems. That's annoying. I do not recommend this book. Take a class from another professor who uses a different text book.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a decent book...
I agree with the previous reviewer who mentioned the text was very disorganized. Much of the information provided is very redundant, hence the book could have been much shorter (and less expensive).

Synopsis: National cultures and laws affect accounting standards used by different countries. The book discusses the major differences of accounting in great detail. There is a push by the International Accounting Standards Board to harmonize accounting standards so that international financial statements will be more comparable. Will they succeed? Read this book and then decide for yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best in giving full information and food for thought
I have used the book while working on my Final Thesis. I found it very informative and at the same time it is not overwhelmed with extensive discussions not relating to the main topic. It is clear and logical.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs extensive editing and reorganization.
This text suffers from its haphazard organization and lack of clarity in presentation. Textual material could be simplified if presented in tabular form. Text also suffers from lack of precision in references to accompanying tables. Material and citations tend to be a hodgepodge of older and, in some cases, obsolete studies done by other academicians. ... Read more

Focused on real-life decision making in an international context, this text demystifies and simplifies multinational financial management in a clear, conceptual framework. The approach is to treat international financial management as a natural and logical extension of the principles and valuation framework provided by domestic corporate financial management to account for dimensions unique to international finance. All traditional areas of corporate finance are explored - working capital management, capital budgeting, cost of capital, and financial structure - from the perspective of a multinational corporation. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Can be confusing, major focus on economics
This textbook may not be a good choice for undergraduate students or for someone who does not have an intermediate or higher knowledge of finance. Wording in the chapters and in the end of chapter problems can be confusing. Statements are made and then not backed up with supporting information. The book spends a large amount of time on a macroeconomic view.

We adopted this book during the first semester of 1999 with excellent results. Our students were delighted with the practical approach, and the breadth of its contents. Book Description

The realities of mounting government debt, tax burdens, and an aging population raise serious concerns about the financial legacy confronting future generations. How great a fiscal burden will current policies leave to subsequent generations, and how might changes in those policies alter the intergenerational distribution of public welfare? Generational accounting has recently emerged as a robust new method of fiscal analysis and planning designed to assess the long-term sustainability of fiscal policy and to measure the extent of the financial load ultimately borne by present and future generations. A seminal contribution to public economics, generational accounting has already been adopted by 23 nations around the world.

Combining the latest and most extensive country-by-country generational analyses with a comprehensive review of generational accounting's innovative methodology, these papers are a consummate resource for economists, political scientists, and policy makers concerned with fiscal health and responsibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars continued improvment
I read Terry Neal's book "The Offshore Advantage" and enjoyed it quite a bit. However, it was a little short on "how" someone goes offshore but strong on "why". Thankfully his new book devotes a good deal of space to "how" and does it in a way that is easy to understandgiving gives pros and cons as well as jurisdictional information making it easier for a lay person to get started.

I would recommend this book to people wanting to learn what going offshore is all about. I think it is an excellent resource that will help people make an informed decision.

Congratulations to the author on an job well done.

The favorable review above of Larry Turpen must be seen in the light that Larry Turpen himself has just plead guilty to felony tax evasion.

The real crooks are those in The State who are stealing money from taxpayers via taxes (robbery) and inflation (thievery). I'd suggest that these crooks in the massive organized crime family known as the US Government are maliciously prosecuting T.L. Neal. I'd also note that an accusation does not mean someone is guilty, and that even if that is so, it is completely irrelevant to the advice given in this book (Dr. Atkins died of a heart-attack; that in no way impacts the debate on the health of his dietary plan). We should praise T.L. Neal for trying to help the victims of taxes and inflation. ... Read more

It summarizes each standard, providing a quick reference for managers and executives in the private and public sectors who may not have a strong background in accounting.

This gives the non-technical reader the tools to participate in discussions on the appropriateness or application of a standard in a given situation. The reader can also evaluate the effect that applying a given standard will have on the financial results and position of a division or an entire enterprise.

All of the accounting standards, issued by the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) are included in this book, as well as interpretations disseminated by the Standards Interpretations Committee (SIC) through 31 December 2000. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful introduction, but not for accounting professionals
As an IFRS auditor I use several IFRS publications (mainly from Big 4 audit firms). After browsing Wiley IAS 2004 at my local bookstore, I decided not to buy it because it is just not detailed enough in areas such as financial instruments, first-time adoption of IFRS and employee benefits. I prefer using more detailed, and more authoritative, IFRS publications such as International GAAP 2005 (available on

5-0 out of 5 stars American approach to IAS...
This book gives the full coverage of current IASs (at the end of 2002) and extensively discusses ongoing IASB projects which are expected to come in force in 2003.

The book gives somewhat different from the European/UK approach to IASs... for example, benchmark treatment is assumed by authors as "preferred". The other major source of IAS guidance - Butterworths Tolley's UK and International GAAP - specifically states that "although the terms 'benchmark' and 'allowed alternative' were retained, the IASC Board has made it clear that both treatments enjoy equal status. The fact that one approach is labelled 'benchmark' does not mean that it is the Board's preferred approach.".

All in all Wiley IAS 2003 is a must buy for all dealing with IASs. Due to lack of current US textbook in international accounting this book becomes more that a reference for a professional. It may also be useful source for accounting students and teachers wishing to better understand differences between US GAAP/IAS differences in treatments and approaches. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Handy Reference Book for MBA Level
This textbook is used in our MBA International Finance course (1 semester) and we basically covered about 80% of the materials in the class. The book is well organised and, most importantly, the notations are very clear which helps understanding the materials. Each chapter include a list of references so that students who need to do further research (e.g. for their projects) can start from there. There are also extensive references to the current developments in international finance arena including internet links. We used the Conceptual Questions and Problems at the end of each chapter for revision purpose as well. I do not find much numerical errors as other reviewers mentioned in 2nd edition. Overall I find it very well-written and was useful for my learning experience.

Unfortunately I had to buy the book and read all 600 pages of it. It was my textbook for one of my courses at uni. Book Description

It is a well-known fact that conventional commercial banks provide financial intermediation services on the basis of interest rates on assets and liabilities. However, since interest is prohibited in Islam, Islamic banks have developed several other modes through which savings are mobilized and passed on to entrepreneurs, none of which involve interest.

Islamic Banking and Finance discusses Islamic financial theory and practice, and focuses on the opportunities offered by Islamic finance as an alternative method of financial intermediation. Key features of profit-sharing (as opposed to debt-based) contracts are highlighted, and the ways in which they can facilitate improved efficiency and stability of a financial system are explored.

The authors illustrate that in addition to some 200 Islamic banks operating in Muslim as well as non-Muslim countries, some of the biggest multinational banks are now offering Islamic financial products.

This book will fascinate students, researchers and academics with a special interest in comparative banking, middle-eastern studies and international finance, and will also appeal to practitioners of banking and finance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars International Accounting
This book, written as a text for accounting/business students, provides an excellent overview of accounting standards around the world.Rather than providing a detailed listing of accounting standards for each country (best left for reference texts and online, easily updatable sources) the authors focus on the key features of accounting standards, disclosures and harmonization efforts worldwide.

This book provides an excellent, basic primer in international accounting. It is easily read by anyone with a basic understanding of business and finance and/or accounting. The authors provide numerous examples of international financial reporting, taken from actual financial statements and annual reports.

Book Description

The functioning of the global economy depends very much on the quality and quantity of information provided by multinational corporations, not only to investors and taxing agencies but also to governmental policymakers. Underlying this is the concept of "disclosure adequacy." It refers to ways in which the quality of information that MNC's divulge about their economic transactions can be measured, and such information and its adequacy can vary widely from country to country. How this happens and why it should be so--what the nature of disclosure adequacy and its determinants--is the subject of Riahi-Belkaoui's latest Quorum book. Academics in finance and accounting will recognize quickly the beginnings of a "contingency theory of disclosure adequacy internationally," one that identifies various "relativisms and presents empirical evidence for their validity." Financial analysts and other investment professionals will gain useful ways to work with (and make sense of) foreign firms' annual reports, while public policy people will find insights to aid in the harmonization of accounting principles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Step-by-step guide from the master
This book set me up very nicely for a career in forex markets. Possibly the gentlest introduction to international finance, the book does not waste any time with implementation of the ideas, instead provides you with the requisite knowledge, and illustrative examples. I had the fortune of being taught the subject by the author (Dr. Eun), and so the book was fully utilized. However, other teachers would also find the book an ideal companion to course notes. In fact, the book is so well written, it seems like a tutorial. You cannot go wrong if you are using it for international finance courses. The book will also help you with preparation for the CFA charter examinations.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent textbook on international finance
This book has three major strengths compared to other textbooks in this field. #1: It is soundly based on FINANCE theories. Most other textbooks on international finance have more of an "international BUSINESS" taste. #2: It is more analytical than most others. #3: It is comprehensive yet very concise. This is a must-read in the field of international finance. It is particularly suitable for senior-level finance undergraduate and MBA students as well as finance professionals with an interest in investments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Eun is a genius.
