I especially like the list of questions right at the start for use as a quick index when filling out employment questionnaires. Strong responses to such questions as what aspects of your current job do you like best, or least, are quickly found with a discussion of the reasoning behind the answers. This book is concise and to the point, and well worth the price even if you don't expect to need it in the near future, if just for the self-confidence and self-examination opportunity it gives you. I highly recommend it. Joe Buchberger

Almost all of the questions that you're terrified of being asked in an interview are here. The book tells you how to respond to these questions gracefully and gives sample responses from people that got hired. If you are willing to spend a few hours and prepare answers to these questions diligently, your chances of getting a job should improve dramatically.
This book is a wonderful resource once you get the interview. This leaves us with the question, "How do you get an interview?" Simple, know the type of job you want and pursue it, if you do not know what type of job you want you may want to read the classic, "How to find your dream job and make it a reality." By Jason McClure. Read this book, and practice for your job interviews and you will be successful in your job hunt.
EVERYBODY knows you're not suppossed to dis a past employer, right? I've known that for years, and I just did it last week. I knew when I was doing it, that it was wrong; but I couldn't dig my way into a more positive response. In fact, that's why I bought the book. Fry takes you around those stumbling blocks with a variety of approaches, even with regard to keeping a flow in the facts that you are putting forth. Of course, you have to do the work. As with every manual, it isn't a novel, it's behavior, and practice, not how well, (again, in my case,) you `understand' it. You can't go wrong with the material here. It's sound, it's been tested and it's completely common sensical- it just doesn't come by osmosis. Do it, it helps. Good luck. ... Read more

Wow! What a great book! I have landed a fantastic pharmaceutical sales job with one of the top five companies thanks to the Insider's Guide and the coaching I received from Jane and staff at Principle Publications. I couldn't have made it through the tough interviews without the guide. All of the questions and answers about how to handle the physicians who turn you down during a sales call, to why they should hire you over someone with sales experience, to how to "sell the product", etc. were all covered in detail in the book with examples! This "saved" me during my interviews, especially during the last and most difficult interview. I feel like I was asked most of the 78 questions and answers covered by the book during my five interviews. Without my career comparison document and sales binder that I prepared by using the Insider's Guide I am certain that I could not have passed the interviews. Jane deserves a medal for this writing this book! I choose this book because it is the #1 selling book in its class on Amazon.com. There's a reason why it's #1...it's the best book on the market!...
I was surprised that the pharmaceutical company who hired me would ask so many questions that relate directly to what a pharmaceutical sales representative does, but they did just that. When I read all the questions and answers in the "Insider's Guide..." I thought that surely no one could be expected to know this much information about the pharmaceutical sales industry, but they do expect you to know the information. Fortunately for me, I was prepared! The Insider's Guide was by far the most comprehensive guide that I purchased and contained the most relevant information for passing the interviews. To all of the aspiring pharmaceutical sales reps, my advice is to purchase this guide and then follow Jane's instructions to the letter. Even if you have a degree in English like me, you too could beat out the competition and win the pharmaceutical sales position! Elizabeth Morehouse
The book is very well written, professionally edited, and reflects the author's credibility. It is easy to see why this book is being utilized by college and university sales and marketing professors for their sales and marketing courses and special sales classes. ... Read more

What's the most important thing I can do to help within the first 90 days of my employment? After I heard this question, I thought, wow! What a great question to ask. My father had apparently spoken with you a few days before my interview and had relayed this question to me from you to ask (say that 3 times fast). I had learned from my father that you had actually written books on the topic of interviews and questions to ask, so I immediately ran to the store to pick up a copy. I picked up a copy of your book on a Tuesday late evening and had read it from front to back 3 times before my interview on Thursday morning. I am strongly convinced that your book got me an offer! Thank you. I have been on many interviews throughout my short time in the workforce and had never felt as comfortable as I did in my last interview after reading your book. I was amazed to hear hiring managers and human resource representatives respond to the questions I asked them. Their responses were nearly identical to the responses you stated in your book. Again, thank you for a great book and the job offer. I may have been able to pull it off without reading your book, but I'm convinced (especially in today's market) that your questions placed me at the top of the pile.
On my flight to the interview, I reviewed this book and found a number of questions that I wanted to keep on hand for the "right time" - and I jotted them down - along with others that were more specific to the position, product, and industry, then organized them according to categories - product, company, job, etc. During the interview, I asked a number of them, and almost each time I asked a question, the hiring executive paused, and then said something like "that's an excellent question" and then went into a thoughtful and valuable response. His answers to these questions gave me a tremendous insight into the company that I might not have gotten without asking the questions. At the same time, my questions demonstrated my level of interest in the position, the company, and his opinions. They showed that I was prepared, thoughtful, and intelligent. I asked questions like: What are the three top priorities for the person in this position in the next 90 days? and What are the key characteristics you're looking for in the person who you select for this position? I am certain that the interviewer thought more of me for asking thoughtful questions - even though I think he liked me before I asked them. This is a quick and easy book to read, and an easy book to use. The ideas that it includes - in addition to the questions it offers - are not "rocket science", but they are offered and described in ways that can be easily adapted to the situation you're in. The "tips" on interviewing are also quite useful in general. This book has already proven helpful and valuable and I will refer to it before any job interview I have in the future. While there are many books on interviewing and job hunting, this one is a quick study, easy to read, and most importantly, very useful. I highly recommend it to anyone interviewing for any level position.
My mom, who is a temporary staffing recruiter, picked your book "201 Best Questions to ask on your interview" for me, and read this book, taking notes as I went along. I had about 4 days to prepare for this interview, and felt pressured. But seeing some of the "Questions NOT to ask", I cracked a smile, and felt better. When I went to the interview, I felt very comfortable with the situation, knowing that by reading your book, I now knew what to do, and what not to do. The interview lasted an hour and a half, in which the interviewer and I sat and chatted about non-interview items. Today, I wrote the interviewer to ask if a decision had been reached, and was shocked to receive a phone call from him, offering me the position. I almost fell out of my chair. In the end, I thank two people. God, as my heavenly father, guiding me through this interview, and you, for helping me out with the hard parts of the interviewing process to which I probably would not have received this position without. To me, seeing success after the first interview from reading your book, it paid for itself, seeing the smile on my face when I heard the answer. I will recommend it to friends and family. Once again, thank you so much!

Where do managers usually come from? Promotions. Usually, what is one of their first tasks? Fill the position they just vacated. Where in this process were they taught how to interview? They then ask themselves "What questions did they ask me?" Generally, the Human Resource Department will give them written guidelines about the personal questions that may not be asked, but do not teach them how to conduct effective interviews. Why not? In smaller companies, the Human Resource Manager themselves may not conduct effective interviews because their previous position did not require that training, and they are "too busy" in their current position to be trained. This leaves it up to you, the hiring manager. "Interviewing and Selecting High Performers" by Richard Beatty provides you with an excellent foundation to prepare for an interview. He demonstrates why people are an organization's most important resource (People control all of the resources). He provides you with an exercise to demonstrate the cost of a poor hire - should scare you into becoming a manager who selects high performers. Mr. Beatty walks you through structuring the interview, provides you with 500 or so behaviorally based questions (However, I would shy away from the personal questions), and suggests a structured interview. His structured interview requires a lot of work. However, at the end, you and your interviewing team will be able to give each candidate a numerical grade. The managers that I have taught to use this system swear by it. Personally, I guarantee that if you ever hire someone who received a "34" on their interview because "my gut told me this is a good person", after being disappointed with their performance, you will never do it again. I would suggest that you also read "Topgrading" by Bradford Smart and then blend the two processes together. Selecting high performers is one of a manager's most important jobs. Congratulations on searching to find a way to be more effective. www.recruiterguy.com

It tells you all the "why's" behind the standard interview questions like "where do you want to be in 5 years?", and red flags to look for in candidates. Reading it also helped me know what to say when I was being interviewed!
If you are a hiring manager, this will help you to have a template to ask great job related questions. For those organizations who like to have structured interviews, this can be used to pick and choose questions for various managers to help compile a great profile from the interview process. Structuring allows you not to repeat the same questions and shows the candidates that you are careful in your selection process and are interested in getting the best. If you are a recruiter, manager or even a job seeker wondering what may be asked in an interview, this is a great tool to have in your library.

In the bulk of this book, the author covers what he feels are common programming related interview questions. Almost all of the examples are in C, except for a few oddballs (one is done in Perl, which doesn't exactly lend itself to clarity). I don't understand why the author chose C. He states it is the "language of choice" for interviewers. Most universities are making their grads think OO these days. While they may have a few projects in C, the majority of their experience is going to be in C++ or Java, or C# in the near future. If a new grad is going to interview, and they state that they aren't that great with C but they know C++ or Java really well (which is probably true for most new-grads), I would be very, very surprised if this was an issue. What if it was an issue? As a new grad, would you want to work somewhere where your interviewers could only think in C? Regardless, the common feature here is OO. The book misses the boat on this point. I have been working in the Java space for quite some time and the non-OO examples were hard for me to follow, and I found myself not wanting to follow them because they seemed inelegant. I would have preferred to see them in (OO) pseudo code. The rest of this book covers interviewing tactics, a few logic puzzles, and a small section on resume writing. The sections on interviewing tactics and resume writing assumed a very low experience level and seemed more like they were written for high-school grads than for college grads let alone experienced software developers. The puzzle section was fun.
If you are looking for a programming job, please do some research to find what technology might be useful to them.

The salary tips are great, as is the section on questions to ask the interviewer. On my last interview, my now-boss kept saying how impressed she was with my "intelligent questions." Overall, this book is easy to read, interesting and helpful. It's a keeper.
The interview questions that Robin poses are ones that I have heard over and over again in interviews. I like the fact that she doesn't include "the top 1001 interview questions", and includes the ones which you are most likely to hear (in an order you would be likely to hear them as well). Some of Robin's answers to these questions were great - particularly the questions which are geared towards getting you to bad mouth a former boss and/or co-worker. I'm always very uncomfortable with those types of questions, and while the answers presented in the book are admittedly ways of making you appear aloof to the heart of the question... they do help you side-step a situation where you might otherwise be forced into speaking poorly of others, which isn't something you want to do during an interview. Having said that, there were some questions to which Robin's answers made me laugh out loud. You might score some points for creativity with a prospective boss though if you take all of her suggestions! :D Anyway, these days a lot of people in charge of hiring get into all of that "warm and fuzzy" stuff, and they might actually like an answer like the one below... "One of my faults is that I loose track of time and work late... blah blah blah" ha... I love it. The 60 second sell, the 5 point agenda... both are very good tips. This aspect of the book is actually based on a common public relations strategy where you keep repeating your key points and incorporate them into every answer you give and every sentence that comes out of your mouth. Overall, this book will help you prepare for an interview and will most likely keep you from being caught off-guard by some of the tricky interview questions you are bound to be asked. Whether or not you use the examples in the book is almost secondary to just knowing what questions to expect. Everything else in the book is solid and helpful, again it helps you prepare which is the key to a good interview.
I've been on many interviews over the years and failed miserably on some due to a lack of foresight and preparation. I really needed a book like this because there was so much that I was overlooking and now I can see exactly where I went wrong. I will study this book and prepare for my interviews accordingly. I would like to point out that the questions in the book and answers are not to be taken literally. Don't answer all interview questions by memorizing the answers given in this book. Use them only as guidelines to make up variations of the same questions and consider the suggested answers and use your best judgement.
This might be a great book if you're looking to get hired by a company that's looking for robotic worker bees -- the kind of place where a modicum of creativity is a grave liability instead of an asset. Job seekers who value their humanity and dignity should look elsewhere for advice. As should those who appreciate the English language. As a writer, Ryan is as dull as a door knob, and I was driven to distraction by her continued use of the verb 'to question' (which implies doubt) when what she means is the perfectly neutral 'to ASK a question', or 'to inquire.' ... I must admit that I had inside information to how helpful this book would be before I purchased it. I had the honor of taking a class taught by Dr. Pollock the semester before my student teaching experience. I had enjoyed his class and had learned a great deal, so I bought "Teacher Interviews" in the hope that the book would be just as enjoyable and enlightening about the interview process. I am pleased to say that I was hired into a phenomenal district within the first 3 weeks of my job search. Actually, I had a choice, as two districts offered me positions on the very same day. I truly feel I owe this in part to Dr. Pollock's words of wisdom, sample questions, and tips. I read the book cover to cover about a month before I began sending out resumes and I referred back to certain key parts before each interview I went on. Finally, I can say that I've had the privilege of having a professor who wrote a book that I will actually keep on my shelf. ... Read more
