Book Description Reviews (3)
I give the book one star because it does have good tips on salary negotiation, but I think there are other books out there that "have it all," including the salary neg. tips. My personal fave is "60 seconds & You're Hired" by Robin Ryan. I've read it before a few job interviews and have felt prepared and confident. 5 O'clock Club, on the other hand, feels like a big homework assignment I just don't want to face.
It provides an effective, concise series of steps for getting and surviving interviews, getting offers, and negotiating the perks. Real-world cases demonstrate each of the steps and how to (and not to) execute them. For job seekers and consultants alike, the author highlights the not-so-obvious fact that job descriptions are usually very flexible. By helping the hiring manager customize the role to fit your strengths and demonstrate your value, you can justify higher pay, yield a job you'll be happier with, and become more valuable than your competitors. The chapters on salary negotiation are particularly good, especially sections on properly timing the salary negotiation (i.e., after you've shown the hiring manager the value of your particular skills) and handling objections during the process. This book seems to be part of a series by the Five O'Clock Club. Their title on "Targeting the Job You Want" sounds like it might also be an excellent accompanyment, helping Job Seekers first define the kind of role they should be seeking. ... Read more

Book Description Ever wondered which selling approaches really work?Of course you have. But if youre like many salespeople youve never considered the obvious: asking the buyer what he or she wants.Buyer-Approved Selling - the inaugural title in the Approved Series of business books - does it for you. Like the rest of the Approved Series, Buyer-Approved Selling is research based. The Marketshare Research Institute team asked purchasing professionals from 228 companies across America what gets them to buy - and what makes them (silently) say "No way."The results, documented in no-nonsense, bite-sized practical tips, read like a "sales trip" through the buyers mind.Start living these tips now. After all, who better to tell you how to sell than the very people you sell to? Buyer-Approved Selling: read today
use tomorrow. Reviews (1)
In addition, Schell includes dozens of comments from 228 buyers who agreed to 330 interviews and provided responses to 4,327 questions. In one of the most interesting chapters entitled, "How to annoy buyers-guaranteed," respondents warrant the guarantee. They confirm that the most successful salespeople know which questions to ask of both prospects and customers. They spend at least 80% of the time listening to the buyer's responses. He also includes a Planning Guide with each chapter using a "Permission-Based Model." This book is both a manual and a workbook, one whose material each reader should modify to accommodate her or his specific needs, interests, goals, and circumstances. Here's a suggestion: Select ten to fifteen customers and schedule a meeting with each. Ask two questions. "What do you like best about doing business with me? and "What more can I do to be of greater service to you and to your company?" The responses may surprise you. You may also be surprised by how eager the buyers are to respond. Why? In all probability, they are seldom asked those two questions. What does that reveal about your own customer relationships? Of equal (if not greater) importance, what does that reveal about your competitors? If you now lack a decisive competitive advantage, a frank conversation with several of your customers may well identify one for you. ... Read more

Although I have experience in writing resumes andinterviewing, this book gives the readers detailed instructions on findingthe right job for them. I truly enjoyed the small section on self-exploration and networking. I never knew the process and protocol ofnetworking. The authors' advocate stringently on this needed part of thejob hunting process. After reading that chapter, I was impressed, eager, and informed. Sanborn and Lederman gives the readers tools, such as tradeorganization addresses, directories, web sites, and a step by step processto finding and getting the right job. The authors specialize in the NewYork area, thus they provide updated and specified information that onlytrue New Yorkers would have. They share with the reader testimonial-likeexperiences. They help you throw away job hunting myths. Overall, theyprovide the neccessary links, and inside information to motivate the jobseeker to have success in the hectic and chaotic atmosphere of New Yorkcity. ... Read more

I bought this book before my first trip around the world and it led to my first English teaching job--in Istanbul, Turkey. (Griffith's Teaching English Abroad title is a good guide for the teaching path specifically). This is also a good book to read when deciding what you're NOT willing to do. Comparing some of these jobs to working another few months at home instead to save more money puts things in perspective. Understand that this is a guide to short-term work opportunities, so it does focus on ways to make enough to get to the next destination. It's not an international career guide, but rather an inside scoop on where to get paid while you travel. It's an entertaining read and a good investment for shoestring travelers. Tim Leffel
I spent a year working and travelling in Europe and Africa. Working your way around the world is a good way to educate yourself.
Another thing which I found not very helpful is that the book is targeted to people who want to just want to hop from place to place, hence the title. It is geared for the vagabond worker, and assumes that these people will settle for whatever job it takes to stay travelling. What really turned me off was that the book highly suggested hitchhiking as the primary mode of transportation, and spent a great deal of space discussing the beneftis of hitchhiking. Any other travel book strongly discourages this! In a nutshell, if you are not British and you do not feel comfortable with hitchhiking, do not buy this book!
It showed me one doesn't have to follow the route of college, then graduation, then job for life. I bought this book, then worked for three years in London, Spain, and Cairo in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I supported myself and even managed to save money. While personally enriching, my experiences have impressed -- bar none -- every employer with whom I have interviewed over the past seven years. Had I not taken time off, I'd be like many other adults who regret not taking advantage of their youth and lack of committments to explore the world and themselves. If you have any desire to explore, do yourself a favor -- buy the book, then buy your plane ticket. ... Read more

I would like to note that I am in a career field that does, in fact, require a chronological resume, and yet I use the wonderful self-selling techniques Ms. Pontow shares on my own resumes consistently, and it has truly paid off, not only financially, but in my belief in my own abilities. In just the four years since applying this system, my income has increased by half, paying me back a thousand fold, yearly, of my initial purchase price! I have also used Proven Resumes to help other people with their resumes, and MOST of them have used the skills-based format, and MOST of them have achieved their employment objectives with these resumes. For instance: A part-time teacher aide with teaching credentials but no professional teaching experience is now a full-time kindergarten teacher. A grocery store cashier obtained a position as a paralegal secretary. Another grocery store cashier, who had worked at the same store for 20 years and had never written a resume before, is now happily settled in a full-time bank teller position. A veterinarian friend who was applying for a year-long leadership training project was rejected the first year she applied, but the second year, after I re-wrote her resume using Proven Resume techniques, she was accepted. Oh, yeah, and I helped my teenage son with his skills-based resume, and he is now working as a website technician / reporter... an incredibly amazing first job! I would like to make one more plug: These techniques can be used for more than just job resumes. I write up a skills/project based "annual report," if you will, for my annual reviews, so that I can prove to my boss that my skills are growing, and I'm consistenly making the workplace better (You don't stop selling yourself just because you've landed a job). I've used the quantifying and qualifying techniques to write persuasive proposals. And I used a skills-based resume to apply for, and obtain, a position on a state-wide board of directors. It's not just about GETTING a job! For just a few dollars more, this book has nearly twice as much information as the still-available-online version. It's a bargain!
Unfortunately, the recruiting industry may not be ready for this radical change in resume strategies. Nearly 100% of the people who responded to my resume submissions said "You have a great skill set, but I really need this resume re-done in a traditional, chronological style." Who knows how many never bothered to respond? Some of the information in the book is valuable, especially the keyword mapping items, but it certainly is not worth the price tag.

Thank you Dr. Brill! Kudos to your major contribution to the areas of business, sport and life. Andrea Wieland, M.B.A, Ph.D.
Being "in the zone" brings increased performance in most any field. You know when you're in the zone... and when you are not. Many authors and teachers have described the wonders of being in the zone how how to get there. Some of the methods really work. Being in the zone is an important tool for me. I use it in sports (golf), when solving problems, and when working to be in just the right mindset for teaching and facilitating. Another label for this physical/mental state is being "centered." I've had some good teachers. Trouble is, sometimes it's hard to stay in the zone. More troubling, when it's not working for me, I don't know what's wrong, don't have any diagnostics, and it's hard to get back. Pam has some great insights about the details of what "the zone" is... She takes it apart into three A's: attitude, awareness, and activation, their mutual interactions, and how all this can go wrong. She has diagnostics which lead to "if this.. then do this.." strategies for getting back in the zone when it drifts away. I can highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to make "being in the zone" a more reliable tool, ready at hand, for work or play. -=- Richard Karash

Book Description Interview books typically stress the need for establishing rapport with respondents and asking questions that don't influence the responses. Until now, no text has seriously explored who the subjects are behind interview participants. Inside Interviewing showcases the fluctuating and diverse moral worlds put into place during interview research when gender, race, culture, age, and other subject positions are brought narratively to the foreground. It explores the communicative contexts of respondents' thoughts, feelings, and actions, and how meaning is not merely elicited by apt questioning nor transported through clear respondent replies, but actively and socially assembled in the interview encounter, along with changing understandings of what it means to be a particular subject. Topics explored include: Inside Interviewing explores the representational complexities that emerge when research participation is scrutinized, as well as the technical concerns and analytic options that derive from new lenses for viewing the interview process. These new lenses provide readers with theoretically informed direction for figuring how interview participants relate to each other, how to elicit interview data, and how to select alternative ways of representing interview material. This volume is comprised of chapters from the Handbook of Interview Research (Gubrium and Holstein, SAGE, 2001). The companion volume, Postmodern Interviewing (SAGE, 2003), is also comprised of chapters from the Handbook.
