5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for a great interview
Whenever I am job hunting or campaigning for a promotion, I grab this book and brush up on my skills. The "Two-Minute Pitch" outlined in part two is the key to having a great interview. Only once have I gone into an interview without flipping through this book first and I really regretted it. A job seeker can probably have a good interview without reading this book, but he or she will have a GREAT interview after reading it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Like reading an advertisement
I bought this book along with three others that included tips on getting an interview, job offer, and then negotiating salary. This one was wordy and interspersed with advertisements for The Five O'Clock Club. It was also a bit heavy on worksheets and self-assessment tools. I found myself skipping over large sections at a time.

I give the book one star because it does have good tips on salary negotiation, but I think there are other books out there that "have it all," including the salary neg. tips. My personal fave is "60 seconds & You're Hired" by Robin Ryan. I've read it before a few job interviews and have felt prepared and confident. 5 O'clock Club, on the other hand, feels like a big homework assignment I just don't want to face.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - easily worth the money!
This book was obviously written by someone with good sense and a lot of experience in the subject.

It provides an effective, concise series of steps for getting and surviving interviews, getting offers, and negotiating the perks. Real-world cases demonstrate each of the steps and how to (and not to) execute them.

For job seekers and consultants alike, the author highlights the not-so-obvious fact that job descriptions are usually very flexible. By helping the hiring manager customize the role to fit your strengths and demonstrate your value, you can justify higher pay, yield a job you'll be happier with, and become more valuable than your competitors.

The chapters on salary negotiation are particularly good, especially sections on properly timing the salary negotiation (i.e., after you've shown the hiring manager the value of your particular skills) and handling objections during the process.

This book seems to be part of a series by the Five O'Clock Club. Their title on "Targeting the Job You Want" sounds like it might also be an excellent accompanyment, helping Job Seekers first define the kind of role they should be seeking. ... Read more

I used this book when I was job searching during my senior year of college. I read it cover to cover, and followed the author's advice. I was highly successful in my job search, landing my dream job. I was even complimented several times on my "very creative" cover letter. You can't go wrong with this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Letters are all the same and don't offer much variety
I think the letters in this book are just average, and they focus on me, me, me. There is nothing that helps the writer craft a letter to meet the needs of the employer. A good title, but this books misses the mark. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Approach to Customer Relationships
Schell's approach is unique in that he focuses almost entirely on the sales process (both cultivation and solicitation) from "the buyer's side of the desk." He organizes his material in a series of eight parts. In each, he offers specific tips which, for those with extensive sales experience and sustained success, may seem obvious. While many of his suggestions are obvious, such as organizing your prospect database or developing an Industry-Specific Positioning Statement (ISPS), the fact remains that his tips offer substantial value if only as reminders. Everyone in sales encounters a period of failure when they begin to question what they are doing wrong. Reviewing Schell's key points will reveal what they have taken for granted, ignored, neglected or bungled.

In addition, Schell includes dozens of comments from 228 buyers who agreed to 330 interviews and provided responses to 4,327 questions. In one of the most interesting chapters entitled, "How to annoy buyers-guaranteed," respondents warrant the guarantee. They confirm that the most successful salespeople know which questions to ask of both prospects and customers. They spend at least 80% of the time listening to the buyer's responses. He also includes a Planning Guide with each chapter using a "Permission-Based Model." This book is both a manual and a workbook, one whose material each reader should modify to accommodate her or his specific needs, interests, goals, and circumstances.

Here's a suggestion: Select ten to fifteen customers and schedule a meeting with each. Ask two questions. "What do you like best about doing business with me? and "What more can I do to be of greater service to you and to your company?" The responses may surprise you. You may also be surprised by how eager the buyers are to respond. Why? In all probability, they are seldom asked those two questions. What does that reveal about your own customer relationships? Of equal (if not greater) importance, what does that reveal about your competitors? If you now lack a decisive competitive advantage, a frank conversation with several of your customers may well identify one for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for paralegals of all experience levels
In my job as Career Development Coordinator for a major ABA-approved paralegal school, I frequently recommend this book to current students and graduates alike. I recommend it to new paralegals as a step-by-step guide to finding a job, and to experienced paralegals as a great tool for making sure that your job-search skills are as sharp as your legal skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatly improve your employment prospects: Use this resource
I loaned this book to a friend who had trouble finding decent paralegal employment. Within 7 days, she had 2 quality offers. I referred her to the chapters on networking, job searches, the interview, and salary negotiation strategies. I also included a separate salary survey. So the book paid immediate dividends for my friend. I also refer to the book frequently. I just completed paralegal school and still use the book for the resume and cover letter information. This book reads easily, cover all of the pertinent subjects, and is useful from the time a paralegal career and education are being considered, untilyour first year in your new job. Experienced paralegals should find all of the chapters relating to job hunting very useful and updated. However, I do have a problem, that is I don't have enough copies to loan to my friends. The book is only helpful when used, though. If you choose to let it collect dust, you will not receive the full benefits of all of the tested tips and advice.

The book also has a fascinating new poll/ranking of the 50 most prestigious management consulting firms to work for. Although I have experience in writing resumes andinterviewing, this book gives the readers detailed instructions on findingthe right job for them. I truly enjoyed the small section on self-exploration and networking. I never knew the process and protocol ofnetworking. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best all-around guide and fun to read
While this book is written from a British perspective, it is an excellent guide for anyone who wants to travel around the world on limited funds. The author relies on "been there done that" travelers to supply information and anecdotes from the road and I can vouch from experience that those nuggets show up in revised editions.

I bought this book before my first trip around the world and it led to my first English teaching job--in Istanbul, Turkey. (Griffith's Teaching English Abroad title is a good guide for the teaching path specifically). This is also a good book to read when deciding what you're NOT willing to do. Comparing some of these jobs to working another few months at home instead to save more money puts things in perspective.

Understand that this is a guide to short-term work opportunities, so it does focus on ways to make enough to get to the next destination. It's not an international career guide, but rather an inside scoop on where to get paid while you travel. It's an entertaining read and a good investment for shoestring travelers.

    Tim Leffel
    author, The World's Cheapest Destinations

5-0 out of 5 stars It lets you know what is possible
I was introduced to an early edition of this book by a couple of English blokes I lived with in Minneapolis in 1989. Above all, it made me realize that travelling around the world for a working class fellow was a realistic option. It gives a lot of specifics on how to find work in different parts of the world. I have seen no other book that comes close to providing the information that a working traveller needs. Being in its tenth edition shows that many others have found it valuable as well.

I spent a year working and travelling in Europe and Africa. Working your way around the world is a good way to educate yourself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for Europeans, not Americans
As an American student looking to find work in Europe, this book was absolutely no help to me at all. It is published in Great Britain, and probably 95% of the addresses she gives are in the UK. I found a couple of interesting ones in the U.S., but all the good ones were not American. Also, prices are in pounds, not dollars, which makes it difficult for an American to fully comprehend without a calculator and info on exchange rates. If you are British, this would probably be a great book for you!

Another thing which I found not very helpful is that the book is targeted to people who want to just want to hop from place to place, hence the title. It is geared for the vagabond worker, and assumes that these people will settle for whatever job it takes to stay travelling.

What really turned me off was that the book highly suggested hitchhiking as the primary mode of transportation, and spent a great deal of space discussing the beneftis of hitchhiking. Any other travel book strongly discourages this!

In a nutshell, if you are not British and you do not feel comfortable with hitchhiking, do not buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!!!
If you're interested in working while you travel this is thebook to read before you go! Although the book is written from theEuropean traveler's perspective, the latest edition does also give advice on how Americans can find jobs in the discussed regions. Particularly helpful are the author's specific recommendations of places to look (i.e. likely streets, areas, and companies). The one thing I appreciates about this book, is that it's realistic. She doesn't tell you that you're job search is going to be easy when it in all liklihood will not. When you're seriously planning to go abroad you don't want rhetoric, you want reality and that is what the author provides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than excellent
    This book changed my life.

It showed me one doesn't have to follow the route of college, then graduation, then job for life. I bought this book, then worked for three years in London, Spain, and Cairo in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I supported myself and even managed to save money.

While personally enriching, my experiences have impressed -- bar none -- every employer with whom I have interviewed over the past seven years.

Had I not taken time off, I'd be like many other adults who regret not taking advantage of their youth and lack of committments to explore the world and themselves.

If you have any desire to explore, do yourself a favor -- buy the book, then buy your plane ticket. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I use these techniques ALL the time!
I purchased the pdf version of this book online in 2000. It is not the complete version of the book this one is and has only 142 pages of text, but it may have been the wisest purchase I I've ever made! Unlike the last reviewer, I believe Proven Resumes is worth every single penny and much more!

I would like to note that I am in a career field that does, in fact, require a chronological resume, and yet I use the wonderful self-selling techniques Ms. Pontow shares on my own resumes consistently, and it has truly paid off, not only financially, but in my belief in my own abilities. In just the four years since applying this system, my income has increased by half, paying me back a thousand fold, yearly, of my initial purchase price!

I have also used Proven Resumes to help other people with their resumes, and MOST of them have used the skills-based format, and MOST of them have achieved their employment objectives with these resumes. For instance:

A part-time teacher aide with teaching credentials but no professional teaching experience is now a full-time kindergarten teacher. A grocery store cashier obtained a position as a paralegal secretary. Another grocery store cashier, who had worked at the same store for 20 years and had never written a resume before, is now happily settled in a full-time bank teller position. A veterinarian friend who was applying for a year-long leadership training project was rejected the first year she applied, but the second year, after I re-wrote her resume using Proven Resume techniques, she was accepted. Oh, yeah, and I helped my teenage son with his skills-based resume, and he is now working as a website technician / reporter... an incredibly amazing first job!

I would like to make one more plug: These techniques can be used for more than just job resumes. I write up a skills/project based "annual report," if you will, for my annual reviews, so that I can prove to my boss that my skills are growing, and I'm consistenly making the workplace better (You don't stop selling yourself just because you've landed a job). I've used the quantifying and qualifying techniques to write persuasive proposals. And I used a skills-based resume to apply for, and obtain, a position on a state-wide board of directors. It's not just about GETTING a job!

For just a few dollars more, this book has nearly twice as much information as the still-available-online version. It's a bargain!

1-0 out of 5 stars Be prepared to re-write
I purchased this book about a year ago to assist in a job search I was doing. Initially, I was very excited; I felt the strategies made sense and the results were positive changes in my resume.

Unfortunately, the recruiting industry may not be ready for this radical change in resume strategies. Nearly 100% of the people who responded to my resume submissions said "You have a great skill set, but I really need this resume re-done in a traditional, chronological style." Who knows how many never bothered to respond?

Some of the information in the book is valuable, especially the keyword mapping items, but it certainly is not worth the price tag.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Info for the Hiring Manager and Applicant Alike!
I am not aware of any other book that addresses the needs of the Oracle hiring manager and applicant alike. This book is packed with interview questions that help separate the wheat from the chaff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Oracle DBA Hiring Guide for IT Managers
This book is a great help to me as an IT manager that lacks knowledge of Oracle but routinely needs to hire Oracle DBAs. The questions and answers are particularly helpful in the interview process. Selecting technical professionals has always been difficult when I lack the familiarity with the technology to parse between the experienced applicants and those who simply throw around buzz words and catch phrases. Using this text I can grade the applicants and weed out the inexperienced ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars IT Manager
This is a valuable book for any IT hiring manager or for any dba not experienced as an interviewer. Mike Ault has put together a good approach and guide for a fair and balanced interview. All you'll need is some good candidates

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of paper
A long time ago I purchased a book by Mike Ault and inside there were the same questions he publised in this book - the problem is that a good portions of these questions are completely obsolete by now (like SQLnet v2 or utlbstat/ustat questions) while some answers are wrong (like myths about high hit ratios)!
This book should never be published (like almost all the rest of 'Rampant' books). Save your money and get Oracle Interview Questions from the net as these found in this book will not be asked on Oracle job iterviews.

1-0 out of 5 stars Two can play at the game
Does Mr Ault realize that this book would help Oracle DBA candidates get jobs too ?

    Picture this :

1 You have a hirer who knows next to nothing about Oracle and uses this book.
2 You have a candidate who also knows next to nothing about Oracle using the same book.
    3 An interview
    4 All questions answered correctly.
5 Bingo! You have a hiring!

Since there will always be more Oracle DBA candidates than hirers, I'll bet that Mr. Ault will make more money selling this book to Oracle DBA CANDIDATE customers than Oracle hirers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Creatively written--far more interesting & helpful than most
Now this is a book that kept me engaged! Dr. Brill has a writing style that captured my heart and mind--I have read a lot of books in the area of psychology, sport psychology & business (for academic, personal and professional reasons). This was a book I could really wrap my head around and apply immediately. The writing, structure and stories brought the strategies to life and helped me recognize their applicability to my own experiences. To be able to simplify a complex process and to know her tools are grounded in reliable and valid research make the book all the more powerful and usable.

Thank you Dr. Brill! Kudos to your major contribution to the areas of business, sport and life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The '3As' are EXCELLENT tools for coping!
I highly recommend 'The Winner's Way.' As a lay person with the absolute minimal knowledge of psychology, I found the concepts to be understandable, and I was immediately able to apply the easy principles as I recently sat on the witness stand facing a belligerent defense attorney who tried every trick to shake my resolve. The '3As' worked for me! They are a set of useful tools to be added to our arsenal for coping with those adverse situations in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living In The Zone
Until I read this life changing book by Pam Brill, I had thought getting "in the Zone", that best of all places to be, happened by luck alone. Discovering that there is a method to systematically get "in the Zone" is cause for elation! Pam Brill's research and real-world testing are reflected in the case studies that weave throughout the book and prove the effectiveness of her method. In today's world of living on alert, Pam offers a simple and effective strategy we can all use to live our business and personal lives purposefully and fully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pam's book is a helpful tool for everyone!
Pam's book provides diagnostic and motivational methods that are helpful for everyone, regardless of age or profession. As a school administrator, I find her methods applicable to both my team of teachers and to my students. Whether you're looking to make major personal or professional life changes or if you're feeling good, but want to be doing and feeling great, this book provides a valuable blueprint to help you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pam Brill's book is great !
Pam Brill's new book is a great addition to the available knowledge about being "in the zone."

Being "in the zone" brings increased performance in most any field. You know when you're in the zone... and when you are not. Many authors and teachers have described the wonders of being in the zone how how to get there. Some of the methods really work.

Being in the zone is an important tool for me. I use it in sports (golf), when solving problems, and when working to be in just the right mindset for teaching and facilitating. Another label for this physical/mental state is being "centered." I've had some good teachers.

Trouble is, sometimes it's hard to stay in the zone. More troubling, when it's not working for me, I don't know what's wrong, don't have any diagnostics, and it's hard to get back.

Pam has some great insights about the details of what "the zone" is... She takes it apart into three A's: attitude, awareness, and activation, their mutual interactions, and how all this can go wrong. She has diagnostics which lead to "if this.. then do this.." strategies for getting back in the zone when it drifts away.

I can highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to make "being in the zone" a more reliable tool, ready at hand, for work or play.

    -=- Richard Karash

p.s. I offer these disclosures: I am posting with my real name; my work is teaching and facilitating Organizational Learning (see works by Peter Senge, for example). I have bought Pam Brill's book, read it, and used it as I have described. I met Pam Brill socially, and we discovered our mutual interests. I have no financial connection in this matter. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great, practical advice
What this book does well is respond to specific scenarios, and then provide examples of resumes and cover letters.I previously considered cover letters to be pretty useless, but after reviewing this book I can see how a good one could make a difference. An HR friend of mine also stressed that a good letter can make a difference. I found the "power impact technique" to make perfect sense. Job hunting in today's market is all about selling yourself, and I think the suggestions in this book help do that. Those readers who were disappointed should remember that even if the "power impact technique" provides a formula approach, it is hard to deny that the sentences are attention getting....and getting someone to "take notice" and read further is the first step to the interview.

5-0 out of 5 stars HR manager says excellentresource; buy & use!
I am an HR Manager and I can highly recommend this book as the authority on cover letters. Not only do I recommend it to others, I just used it myself and dramatically improved my cover letters. The new boss who hired me stated he thought my cover letter was excellent and my resume really got his attention. I used both Ryan's books " Winning Cover Letters, and her other book "Winning Resumes". I give them my highest endorsement.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book helped me get the job!
I hate writing cover letters but the author outlined a formula that was easy to follow. After not getting any results I used this bookto create my winning cover letter (and I used herWinning Resume book too), and I got an interview for a great mid-level manager postion. I landed the job and they commented on how impressed they had been by my letter & resume. This author is a pro -- buy this book if you want real guidnace in landing a new or better job. If I can learn to write an effective cover letter, anyone can.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
Here's my cover letter for why it's not worth buying this book:

"6 months of resume and cover letter writing during my job search is the experience that I can bring to the position of Bad Book Writer."

Every example follows the same exact cookie-cutter recipe, starting with this type of sentence. Not only are the sample letters of poor quality, but there is no information of substance as to how to craft a letter that is unique to my situation and prospective employer. The Power Impact Technique is simple a 2-step process that follows the cookie-cutter recipe.

1-0 out of 5 stars this book sucks
i wonder how hard it is to write cover letters when you have the exact qualifications the job is looking for?well, if you want that question answered go pick up a copy of this book.the best has to be "chloe jones" on pgs 69-71.she's looking for a job as a grant administrator.it's amazing!her past job was exactly that - a grants admin.imagine how difficult it must have been to write that cover letter and resume!the book is full of examples like this, where the person has the exact qualifications for the job.ryan then uses the all powerful "impact technique", to craft a masterful cover letter.it's a little suspicious when every cover letter begins with "ten of banking experience", "fifteen years of human resources management", "twelve years of marketing skills", etc. there is hardly anything of substance in this book for people wanting to change careers, people with little work experience trying to break into a desired field, or anyone who does not have the exact job history and skill qualifications for the advertised position.save your money or else you'll spend "two hours of life wasted". ... Book Description

Interview books typically stress the need for establishing rapport with respondents and asking questions that don't influence the responses. Until now, no text has seriously explored who the subjects are behind interview participants.

Inside Interviewing showcases the fluctuating and diverse moral worlds put into place during interview research when gender, race, culture, age, and other subject positions are brought narratively to the foreground. It explores the communicative contexts of respondents' thoughts, feelings, and actions, and how meaning is not merely elicited by apt questioning nor transported through clear respondent replies, but actively and socially assembled in the interview encounter, along with changing understandings of what it means to be a particular subject.

    Topics explored include:

    • The varied roles that interview participants play, alerting readers to the theoretical dimensions of subjectivity, and how this awareness can affect the interview process
    • The interpretive challenges researchers face in analyzing data collected from interview respondents and their representational positions concerning the subject matter in question
    • Methods for describing lives that incorporate the representational sensibilities of both interviewees and interview researchers

Inside Interviewing explores the representational complexities that emerge when research participation is scrutinized, as well as the technical concerns and analytic options that derive from new lenses for viewing the interview process. These new lenses provide readers with theoretically informed direction for figuring how interview participants relate to each other, how to elicit interview data, and how to select alternative ways of representing interview material.

This volume is comprised of chapters from the Handbook of Interview Research (Gubrium and Holstein, SAGE, 2001). The companion volume, Postmodern Interviewing (SAGE, 2003), is also comprised of chapters from the Handbook.

    Book Description

A 192-page book, Real-Resumes for Teachers shows actual resumes and cover letters that helped real teachers, counselors, and administrators find new jobs and advance in their field. By tradition, teaching professionals use either a one-page resume or a lengthier curriculum vitae (CV) when they seek new positions or advance in their field, and this book provides insight into the most effective formats for the popular one-page resume as well as the lengthier CV. Real-Resumes for Teachers is designed to show the most effective formats which can be used by professionals in the teaching field to present their credentials and qualifications. The Table of Contents is designed to show individuals in varying roles in the teaching and education field. Resumes and CVs are shown of administrators, assistant principals, teachers in child care and social services environments, college teachers and professors, counselors and librarians, elementary school teachers, high school te! achers, as well as military science and ROTC instructors. There are resumes of teachers embarking on a second career in teaching, and there is even a section focusing on teachers changing careers from teaching to a new field. Since all resumes and cover letters were used by actual people in real job campaigns, each resume and its companion cover letter shown is a picture of a successful job hunt, and the theory behind the book is that a picture is worth a thousand words. Real-Resumes Series editor Anne McKinney has handpicked these resumes and cover letters based on her 20 years of experience in working with teachers.Other titles in the series being released in the year 2000 are: Real-Resumes for Career Changers, Real-Resumes for Students, Real-Resumes for Sales, and Real Essays for College & Grad School. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of help
I expect to graduate in May of this year and want to teach high school history. I have no professional experience in the teaching field, so I had no idea how to prepare a resume that would highlight my qualifications and experience that I gained from the office jobs I've held over the last 9 years. This books has several examples of resumes and cover letters from people just like myself. It has given me a lot of ideas.

I AM Chris Guin, and I can assure you that I did not provide the "editorial review" listed on this site. I am a former employee of Ms. McKinney, and while I enjoyed my time at PREP and feel that, in general, their resume and career books are of reasonably fair quality, not only do I resent their use of my name on a review that I never wrote, but I have to wonder -- in light of this fraudulent behavior -- how many of the other "reviews" of PREP's titles are equally fraudulent. Doesn't Amazon put ANY effort into verifying the content that is posted on this site?
