5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well-Written, Clear Guide for Executive Resumes
This book clearly, quickly, and concisely, takes you through how to develop an executive resume and cover letter. It outlines the purpose of various resume elements, and explains why the elements of an executive resume are different than the resume format you learned when you graduated from college.

Well over half of this 300+ page book is sample resumes, and they are really outstanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ FOR SENIOR EXECS/FUTURE EXECS/MGRS/PROFESSIONALS
As a somewhat cynical New Yorker jaded by the mediocrity of most career and job search books, I was pleasantly surprised at the excellence of William Montag's CareerJournal.com Resume Guide for $100,000+ Executive Jobs. The book was deservedly named "Editor's Choice" for September 2002 through December 2002 by the Editor in Chief and General Manager of CareerJournal from The Wall Street Journal. The book, done in partnership with The Wall Street Journal, is based on Mr. Montag's firsthand experience as a professional writer and outplacement counselor to the 50 real-life clients featured in the book. I particularly like the fact that each of the sample resume/letter packages featured throughout the book represents a real-life client that Mr. Montag has served and helped over the past decades. Unlike the majority of career books that include sample resumes and letters written by people other than the author, each and every letter/resume package in this book was originally researched and prepared by Mr. Montag himself. The bottom line is that I followed the book because every recommended step in this text was personally market-tested and proven by the author himself. He backs up every word with firsthand case history experience. The power packaging in Part I of the book is followed by quality chapters featuring the author's reality-based Expansionist Theory--an on target formula for executing an aggressive job search--and the 24/7 Online Job Search Directory featuring the best of the best career and job search Web sites on the Internet. The author also delineates a step-by-step process for registering with CareerJournal.com, the Wall Street Journal's official career Web site. Add this book to your library today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent For What It's Designed To Do
THE MANAGER'S BOOK OF QUESTIONS is an invaluable resource for developing an in-depth, probing but fair, job interview. It provides questions in a variety of categories designed to assist the employer/manager/supervisor to identify the most qualified applicant and the "best fit" for the position. Questions are organized into sections for the purpose of determining a variety of employee characteristics and attributes. For example, some of the sections help identify motivation, the applicant's concept of teamwork, their ability to handle stress, and to think quickly. Other questions explore background, past work history, and salary expectations.

I recently was given a very short timeline to interview applicants for three different positions without having any previous questions available. I used THE MANAGER'S BOOK OF QUESTIONS as the basis for interviews for each of the three positions. There was enough variety in the questions so each interview was customized to fit the needs of each position. It gave me confidence to ask professional and relevant questions and some of the interviewees even commented about how tough but fair the questions were.

After using THE MANAGER'S BOOK OF QUESTIONS and experiencing success first-hand, I highly recommend it for anyone serious about conducting quality job interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars When it's your turn to ask the questions
If you liked the Manager's Book of Questions, you might want to check out a sequel: 201 Best Questions to Ask on Your Interview. At some point in the interview, the interviewer will ask you if you have any questions. If you don't, you may as well kiss the job goodbye. Interviewers these days evaluate you as much by the questions you ask as the answers you give. So this book provides some of the proven questions that you can ask to show that you are rady to add value to the company from Day One.

2-0 out of 5 stars A simple guideline book!
I was dispointed for this book. A lot of interview questions, but only very few analysis.I don't recommend this book to anyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars It is only a general guidebook for manager!
This is a very simple guidebook for manager. Only very few simple analysis you can expect to study. I don't recommend this book to anybody.

5-0 out of 5 stars For me this is a great resource!
Here is the one that convinced me that I would like this book. It's from Chapter 7 ("Can you take the heat?") on page 84.

"Q. When you've had a really GOOD day at work and you go home and kick back and you feel satisfied, what was it about that day that made you feel really good?

"Q.When you have had a really BAD day at work and you go home and feel upset, what was it about that day that made you feel really upset?

"A. In answer to the first question, technical people will offer as a reason for a really good day the solution of a really juicy technical problem. A bad day for them is often when they had to deal with other people. This is important information, because the jobs I'm staffing are people jobs. These are very effective questions in distinguishing candidates who may be great technicians but who would be uncomfortable dealing with people to the extend the job requires."

This is an excellent book. I have read a number of other articles and books on interviewing, and I have come across many of the questions in the book, in one form or another. As far as I am concerned, that validates the content of the questions.

The background, however, (the "answers," if you will) is somewhat scant. I didnt feel like I needed it. But I wonder if this were my first book whether or not I would have liked it as much. The author explains the lack of "answers" in the Introduction and his explanation is acceptable.

So here it is, 751 great questions you can pick from! ... Read more

It is easy and fun to do, but more importantly the content can really probe into who you are and what you can be! The book deals with positive aspects of our character and properly places the negative or dark side in its proper perspective. I enjoyed each chapter, especially for example, the first chapter which deals with writing our own epitaph.( She truly has a funny bone!) As you continue on this adventure, you will find that each chapter helps you deal with the large wall that you keep blaming is in the way. There are truly no walls when you finish this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Compelling And Focused Job-Search/Interview Tool
The majority of career books advise you to send out dozens of resumes, take a passive role, and then practice hundreds of "tough questions" to win the job in the interview. Few books have ever discussed the real objectives of the hiring equation: Can an applicant do the actual job? How can this be determined during the interviewing process? What is the best way for a candidate to demonstrate that they can do the actual job? Mr. Corcodilos has solved the equation with his focused and enlightening advice.

Most of the techniques in this book are unconventional. But as the author stresses, being different works in the ruthless hiring game. The author forces you to examine yourself, focus your search, and concentrate on only a few jobs and companies. His most compelling advice is to do the job in the interview itself. Most of us have never been taught the importance of this simple yet powerful technique. "Do the job in the interview." It is the mantra of this book.

It is rare for a headhunter to share the secrets of his success. But the author strongly believes in his philosophy, and graciously shares it with us. After reading this book, your perspective of the hiring process will be altered drastically. That alone might be the most salient feature of this tremendous work.

The subjects discussed in this book will make you a more attractive candidate, along with a better interviewer. You will learn how to target your job search, and to focus on what you do best: your work. Regardless of which side of the desk you find yourself, this book should be required reading. As an applicant, you will learn strategies to make you stand out from the crowd. As an employer, you will learn to make more informed hiring decisions, and to reduce the chance of a costly mistake. This book is a powerful tool.

Thank you for the opportunity to review this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you want a COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE in your next interview?
Nick Corcodilos, the author of 'Ask the Headhunter', has taken job hunting to the next level!

Maybe I'm totally naive when it comes to job hunting (well, at least not anymore), but this book changed my entire mindset on the conventional methods of seeking employment. To cut directly to the chase....

THE NEGATIVES:

* Some of his writings get really redundant. He's trying to drive home a point, but too excessive.

* His method could leave you spending weeks if not months preparing and researching information just for one company; Especially, if you are changing careers or a recent college graduate seeking employment in an industry you're totally unfamiliar with.

THE POSITIVES:

* Easy to read. I like that!

* Will this book help you get the job you are seeking? - Without reservation nor hesitation, if you follow the method Nick has outlined, your probability of success is greatly enhanced. The real question is 'how could you not?' (beware of personnel jockeys)

* The 'added-value' to this book where the others leave off is simply the difference between SHOW & TELL in your 3rd grade elementary class (showing was always more interesting, huh?) Where the other books will TELL you how to get the job, Nick will SHOW you how to DEMONSTRATE your abilities to DO THE JOB in the interview.

Mark Fredricks

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!
This work reveals an extraordinary approach that shows us the simple ways to always stand out from the crowd.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Honest Book for Jobhunters
The book Ask the Headhunter by Nick Corcodilos can best be described as an honest book; it has done some plain speaking. It should be admired for novelty of style and for propagating proactive and revolutionary ideas in job hunting. It reflects originality of approach to job search; and is conceptualized on hard realities and not imagination and fantasy. It reinvents the concept of interview and explores how it can be used in securing the right jobs and hiring the right candidate. It exhorts job hunters to refrain from gimmicks or perfecting any meaningless interviewing skills. The reader gets provoked into re-examining the interview clichés and stick to responding to the exigencies of the job. The central message of the book should also be viewed as indirectly communicating the changing hiring practices that are being resorted to in the new corporate world. In nutshell, the book helps the jobseeker in many respects including: discovering the job that best suits her disposition, assessing the requirements of the employer, the "how" of taking control of the interview so as to compel the employer to hire her, bargaining the best possible deal, and appreciating issues related with these points of key focus.

In its efforts to focus on some plain speaking, the book contains a good bit of hard-hitting advice. It has succeeded remarkably well in exploding several myths about job hunting and in expounding a new approach to winning job offers. It has tremendous potential of becoming perhaps one of the finest job search books emphasizing ways to get jobs on merits. Of course, it may not be of much help in situations where suitability of job seekers is decided by incompetent or unmotivated and unprepared interviewers, and also where jobs are fixed and pre-decided on extraneous considerations no matter how talented, competent or fit the job-seeker is. Such practices can be seen even in some private sector organizations where the hirers fear talent and innovate ways of finding pretexts for rejecting them so as to hide their own weaknesses and incompetence. Candidates seeking jobs with such employers may therefore need standard how-to books on perfecting the traditional interview skills, along with mastering effective ways of lobbying to get jobs. But as organizations move towards greater degree of transparency and sense of professionalism in a real sense in their working including hiring practices, they will be guided more and more by considerations of merit and purposiveness. Job seekers and employers whose considerations are delivering their best and employing the most suitable will benefit immensely by following the prescriptions and messages contained in this book. It is also interesting to note that the author's website (asktheheadhunter.com) permits access through free membership, and provides a "free sample" of the Ask The Headhunter concepts

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicky Knows The Score
Got to hand it to you, Nicky baby! When it comes to the REAL WORLD, You know the score! All these negative reviews are from people who have their heads buried in the sand.

To you readers out there, let me put it bluntly. You can go on doing what you've been doing, sending out thousands of resumes with no results, or you can do the HARD WORK that Nicky tells you to do. If you're not willing to do that, don't blame Nicky if you get bupkis in return.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Resource
A very good resource for these crazy times of frequent job changes. Kate Wendleton is right on the money when she states that most people will have up to fifteen jobs and five careers in their working lives.

Many of the exercises are quite helpful. The seven stories analysis can tune one in on some hidden talents. The Special Interests List can certainly clue one in and where a person can direct his or her job search. Satisfiers/Disasitifers, 40 Year Vision, and Ideal Scene Worksheets if nothing else can put a frustrated job seeker in a good mood and re-invigorate some badly needed focus.

The sections on job targeting are indeed helpful. This sections works with geographic issues as well as industry and job function matters as well. Company attributes and personal attributes are a detailed level are discussed quite well here.

The research sections and internet listings cap off a wonderful resource for anyone in the midst of a career change. Kate Wendleton even sells her services in an appropriate way without an excessive amount of hype. I will most certainly read through Wendleton's other books, Interviewing And Salary Negotiation as well as Getting Interviews. Kate is most certainly in tune with todays ever changing employment market.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
The mantra has been repeated so often that it's become a cliché: Worker loyalty has disappeared, making every job temporary. Author Kate Wendleton repeats the obvious facts about the increasingly transient work force, but goes beyond the apparent as she supplies inventive ways to approach your career decisions. Her most intriguing suggestion is that you should use a "Seven Stories Approach" to develop your "Forty-Year Vision." The stories help you discover what you're really passionate about so you can build a long-term vision to guide you meaningfully through your career. While the book is repetitious at times, it offers useful examples of job hunters who used Wendleton's tactics to improve their careers. We [...] recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a fresh approach to career change, and to human resource professionals who want to know how applicants are (or should be) thinking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Can take you from a frozen standstill to a heavy jog in 1 wk
So many great exercises and techniques to help people focus and find what they want to do. Once focused, there are helpful guides to getting interviews, writing resumes, turning interviews into offers, and then negotiating the offers. Above all, however, it really helped to lay out long term goals. My next step doesn't have to be the "dream job", it just needs to get me closer to my long term goals. Frankly, I am not prepared for my long term goals yet - but at least now I have them! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good and unusual ideas
It's painful how quickly career books can become out of date. Switching Careers was published in 2001, but contains such howlers as:

"Anywhere in the high-tech sector looks like a good bet."

As a mind-expanding exercise, the book does an excellent job. It examines the reasons behind career-switching, suggests some fields that many of us might never have thought of (such as the clergy), and gives meaningful facts and statistics.

Just make sure to do an up-to-date reality check before taking the plunge. There is irony in the fact that many of the people purchasing this book will be looking for alternatives to exactly the field that Robert Otterbourg calls a 'good bet'.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm in this book!
I am profiled in this book. It was a pleasure to work with the author, Mr, Otterbourg. He did a very thorough job! I am truly honored to be among the many career changers in this book. People can make a change and achieve their goals in life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Switching careers
Mr.Otterbourg has eloquently written a wonderful tool for all of us who contemplate a career change. It is a primer of practical advice, clearly outlining the challanges one faces in considering a particular career change, ranging from finances, time committment, impact on family and redefining established skills in a new profession. Each career move was illustrated by a profile of a person who actually succeeded in the change. These profiles offered inspiration and encouragement. My thanks to the author for writing such a valuable tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's never too late!
Robert Otterbourg helped me think realistically and practically about a career change. His advice allowed me to form reasonable expectations about what it would mean to change careers and to identify what was missing in my current work, how I could find that missing element and what was the cost of the change. The testimonies of the people he's interviewed covers a wide range of careers. Anyone interested in changing their field of work will be encouraged by "Switching Careers." ... Read more

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to find a new job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for considering this book
Greetings. My name is Todd Bermont, author of "10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search." I am honored that you are considering a purchase of my book. While this book may not yet have the reputation of other job-hunting books that have been on the market for 30+ years, in my humble opinion I think you will be delighted in your investment.

My original self-published book "10 Insider Secrets to Job Hunting Success" was in the top 1% of Amazon sales over the last two years. I am extremely grateful for readers such as you who supported my original book. Now, I am pleased to say that Career Press has given me this opportunity to provide you with a brand new book that is even better than the original book and even costs less!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a champion
Finally, there is a book that provides a step-by-step guide to getting a great job - fast! "10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search: Everything You Need to Get the Job You Want in 24 Hours - Or Less" is the first job-hunting book I have seen that covers everything that is essential from finding the right job to actually getting it and negotiating it at a top dollar.

Unlike the Parachute book that wastes tons of pages on starting your own business or the Knock'em Dead book that just focuses on the job interview, this book covers everything a job seeker would need. Also, the author shares one question in particular that you can ask at the beginning of the interview that will almost guarantee a great interview. Once I asked that question up front, I almost always got a job offer. It makes so much common sense, but until this book, I never thought to ask it before.

This book also shares many secrets I did not originally know like "don't send your resume to HR" and "an interviewer makes a decision in the first 90 seconds of an interview." I found the chapter on preparing for the interview especially helpful. Almost all, of the 65 sample interview questions, that, the book shows how to answer have come up at some point in my interviews.

Finally, with all of the negative headlines we see today about the war, economy, etc., it is refreshing to read a book that is so upbeat and puts you in such a positive frame of mind. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of getting a new job, just graduating, or anyone who is out-of-work and wants to get a great job - fast! ... Read more

The book contains over 130 quantitative questions collected from actual investment banking, investment management, and options trading job interviews. The interviewers use the same questions year after year and here they are! These questions come from all types of interviews (corporate finance, sales and trading, quantitative research, etc), but they are especially likely in quantitative capital markets job interviews. 5-0 out of 5 stars Really great prep for Finance interviews
6 stars, because it's helpful too. A really fun read, for me it was like a book of crosswords. This book is best suited for MBA's interviewing for top jobs, or undergrads interested in seeing what's expected of them after they get an MBA.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS E-book IS UNPRINTABLE
Don't purchase the e-book if you need to print out this book. AMAZON does not explicitly tell you that it is unprintable. It will be a nightmare to even communicate with the "refund and returns" department. They will repeatedly evade your questions and in the end will not refund you- very unethical. Get the paper version of this GREAT book otherwise AMAZON will rip you off. Why is it that Amazon has no telephone number when it comes to refunds and returns? A little shady...

5-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT interview for any analytic job before reading this!
This book is specifically targeted at those applying for highly-quantitative jobs on Wall Street, and any job seeker in that area would be nuts not to take advantage of the inside information Professor Crack reveals.

The reason I am writing this review, though, is that I believe the sample interview questions and advice are invaluable to anyone interviewing for any job that involves a lot of analysis.

I am not in the finance field, but rather in technology consulting. Having practiced with Heard on the Street, I found the "tough" interview questions I encountered to be downright easy, and I breezed through several rounds of interviews, landing the job I wanted at a major computer company best known by its three-letter acronym.

If you're headed to Wall Street, reading this book is a no-brainer. If you're headed anywhere else that involves numbers, logic or analysis of a non-financial nature, you'll still be glad you read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for PhD quant positions
This book is a good source of sample job interview questions for PhD quant positions. Other good and recommended resources for finance careers are the Vault Guide to the Top Finance Firms, the Vault Career Guide to Investment Banking, and the Vault Guide to Finance Interviews. Also try the harvard guide to finance careers.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good
This book is good for PhD level candidates, but in my opinion there is more and better objective information for MBA and associate level candidates on Finance and investment banking careers in the Vault Career Guide to Investment Banking and in the Vault Guide to Finance Interviews, which have the added benefit of being able to be purchased on vault.com and downloaded immediately. Good luck. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for AS adults who are mid-career.
This book is excellent and very useful for adults with AS or professionals who work with them. I did not find it very helpful, however, for young adults who are just beginning to enter work. This book would be much more useful for adults who are already employed or have been employed for extended periods. For those people, I believe this book is excellent, helpful, easy to work through, and well-written. But if you are looking for something to help an adolescent or young adult with AS, this may contain a few tips, but it probably won't be very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for those with Asperger's
If you are someone who is, or know someone who is, suffering from Asperger's and you want to develop (better) job skills this is the book for you. The author has Asperger's, as is obvious from the structure, detail, and methodical nature of the book. Lots of forms - LOTS of forms. The book is designed to help the Asperger's person, their family, or a professional prepare for finding the Asperger's person the right job, get them through the interpersonal issues involved in interviewing, and deal with the demands of the job. The personal experiences of the author help color his presentation of the material and help illustrate for the reader that these things can be accomplished and the Asperger's person can thrive in the work environment with the right preparation and planning. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Insights from the other side of the desk....
Too many salespersons (as well as those who supervise them) do not understand the importance of obtaining permission. Specifically, permission to provide information and thereby begin what then becomes a cultivation-solicitation process. So we continue to be inundated with postal and electronic mail we do not want. Telephone calls from persistent strangers invade our personal schedules. And so forth. Why not take the time to learn how best to approach us? How best to obtain our permission to proceed? All they have to do is ask. The same is true of those who recruit, interview, and hire job candidates.

This is one in a series of volumes in the Approved Series, each of which is written from the perspective of "the person on the other side of the desk,"in this instance who buys, interviews, hires, etc. What Schell has done is to interview more than 60 HR professionals to obtain the information which he then carefully organizes within seven Parts:

Effective Job Search Strategies
The HR-Approved Resume
The HR-Approved Cover Letter
HR-Approved Preparation
The HR-Approved Interview
HR-Approved Follow-Up
How to Annoy HR Professionals -- Guaranteed!

NOTE: This last Part all by itself is worth far more than the cost of this book. Reading the previous six Parts first, however, is necessary to derive maximum value.

When concluding his book, Schell shares "Some Final Thoughts" as well as additional information about HR contributors, himself, his research director, and the Approved Series. Those who wish to review -- at no cost, of course -- the full statistical data for all of his surveys are invited to visit the special readers' web page: www.approvedseries.com/readers/hrajir/index.htm. With his reader's permission, of course, Schell will provide periodic updates, special offers, and related information.

As is also true of each of the other volumes in the series, this one really does contain information and counsel of great value to those who sit on BOTH sides of the proverbial desk. That is to say, it will thoroughly prepare HR professionals and others (especially those who are relatively inexperienced) to be much more effective when recruiting, interviewing, and hiring. It can also thoroughly prepare job candidates who participate in that process. Hence the importance of the final Part, How to Annoy HR Professionals -- Guaranteed!

Those who share my high regard for Schell's book are urged to check out Paul Falcone's 96 Great Interview Questions to Ask Before You Hire, Lance A. Berger and Dorothy R. Berger's The Talent Management Handbook: Creating Organizational Excellence by Identifying, Developing, and Promoting Your Best People, Richard Luecke with Peter Cappelli's Harvard Business Review on Hiring and Keeping the Best People, and Bradford D.
