Simple, know the type of job you want and pursue it, if you do not know what type of job you want you may want to read the classic, "How to find your dream job and make it a reality." 3-0 out of 5 stars Good common sense negotiation tactics but...
I bought this book hoping that it would give me some indication of what kinds of things I could ask for when negotiating a new job. I am not at the level of an executive that could be offered stock options and signing bonuses. But I do want to look out for myself. This book provided information that I found to be basic common sense for negotiation that was good, but it did not answer questions I have about what kinds of different "benefits" I could ask for, such as, car phone, portable laptop, telecommuting, etc. Also, what does a written offer look like? Samples would have been great.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for those seeking their next position
You may not be able to use all of the advice, but I doubt that anyone can read this book and not find something that they hadn't considered before. A $10 investment that could reap $1000s in increased salary - great preparation for your next salary negotiation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its worth the money
I bought this book recently when I was changing my job. I was desperate to take the new job and would have taken the job even without negotiation. This book provided me the strategies to increase my salary by almost 10%. The book has several good examples ( that fit very well atleast to my situation ).

A must read even if you are not changing jobs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on negotiating
Excellent book - The author's approach is very logical and he clearly has the experience to validate his comments. He uses sound principles, excellent examples and memorable quotes. I would definately recommend this book - an excellent book which is hard to put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great read!
I actually took Prof. Miller for a course in negotiating and he was excellent. If you're not lucky enough to get to see him in person, read this book. He was on the management side and knows what they're thinking. If you incorporate some of these techniques in negotiating your next salary you will come out ahead. Also, most of these techniques can be applied to any negotiation. Read it, you will not be disappointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book a Technical Recruiter uses to write his own resume
I use this book when updating my own resume and when revising the resumes of others. I looked through a bunch of similar books and selected this one.

I'm ordering more copies. I gave my last one to my wife for an assistant who'd been helpful to her but was being laid off. Using this book, the woman revised her resume and got a new job at the same company making $10k/yr more - probably a 25-30% increase.

As a recruiter, I read thousands of resumes - most of them mediocre. That doesn't mean I'm good at writing my own resume. I use the book's check lists to make sure I'm not missing anything.

I regard a resume as the best piece of work an individual will ever do. It's amazing what you can tell about an individual by 'reading between the lines' of his (or her) resume. What would you do with a Quality Engineer's resume that contains errors? [Toss]! Get this book and use it . . . please.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resume basics
If you don't know where to start with your resume, this book is one of the resources you should consider before putting pen to paper. It covers all the areas of resume writing, with plenty of do's and don'ts. Resumes are important and set the tone of your job search. Robin Ryan shows how to make the most of your efforts. The 53 common mistakes were helpful and amusing. I enjoyed the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A book for high school kids
I bought this book hoping for a serious advice for a professional portfolio creating, but found a bunch of recommendations good for high school-freshmen on how to best present their non-professional expereinces... How a real professional's portfolio looks like - is still a question for me... It seems like a portflio created following these guidelines would make a seasoned professional, an employer, smile at "the kid's nice attempt".

5-0 out of 5 stars Top-Notch
Finally, a book that is perfect for both professionals and students! (See also the trade version) Williams and Hall take readers through the step-by-step creative process. Complete with materials and equipment lists, this book also provides templates on disk to help those who are less experienced with technology. This books makes a wonderful instrument as a college text.

Professionals and students alike will find that they are better prepared for that all-important interview just by going through the creative process. The authors take the reader through the process of developing a portfolio by leading the creator to think critically about their own philosophies, goals, and ideas. This mental exercise alone makes one better prepared to answer those "difficult" interview questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book- my secret little bible for job success
This book is the accumulation of common sense from a very accomplished businessman, Joel Weiss.

Essentially, this book is all the important advice they don't teach you in school.I graduated from Yale in 2003 --it was a great school, but they didn't teach me a jot about how to succeed in business. This book has become my little bible for doing the right thing on the job. Some advice is common sense, like 'show up on time.'But other things I never would have known, like 'ask to read their business plan.'(You should have seen my boss's eyes light up when I asked to read the plan...)

My favorite thing about this book is the format. Each chapter is only 5-6 pages long, and covers a specific piece of advice.Joel backs up every piece of advice with a story or two from his own experience, which really gives the book a human element. Each chapter ends with a few famous quotes to back up the main theme. This is a book to read, and re-read for advice. It sits by my bed, and I'll read a chapter or two to psych me up every once in a while.

This isn't some new 'job philosophy'--it is about 30 specific suggestions for doing well, getting promotions, and even creating new job positions within a company. It matters less and less where you went to school--people only really care about job performance.

I have to say that this would make the perfect graduation gift to anyone planning to get a job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Finally a book that explains how to make your way up the corporate ladder. Finally after 12 years in the "real world" after receiving my MBA a clear concise book that explains the do's and don'ts of corporate America. The anecdotes add a touch of humor and help in remembering the lessons.Socrates and Aristotle would be proud.Great Book I would recommend it to all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best Job Hunting Book
This classic how-to-book beats all of the other "find a job" books, hands down.

What makes this book so much better than others? The authors provide a very effective, logical and detailed guide to the job hunting process. If you follow this guide, you will get the job you want, simple as that.

"The Only Job Hunting Guide You'll Ever Need" masterfully covers resumes and their use as a selling tool, how to network, and the basics in contacting employers. The seven different methods for landing an interview will really help the job hunter to land that interview. Finally, the art of the interview reveals its mysteries. This chapter gives a step by step guide to answering the most common questions, and also shows how the job hunter needs to ask good questions, too.The interviewer may be as inexperienced and as nervous as you are with the interview process!

Be forewarned. This book is not a comprehensive guide for choosing a career, although it gives a good but brief synopsis for the indecisive.Probably the best advice they give along these lines is to take action. Then they show the job hunter just how to go land that job.

The book does not cover the recent revolution in Internet based job hunting. The publisher should put out another edition, advising which job site is best, and whether e-mail can substitute for snail mail for the job-hunter.The reader must be on their own for these issues, but the time tested rules of the pre-digital age still apply to the job hunt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great examples and in general, but lacks for specific needs.
I believe for general job seekers (i.e., people who already have jobs or have had experience) this book is very valuable and very comprehensive. However, as a college student ready to graduate, I would have liked to seemore examples of recent grads of postgraduate, postsecondary, and evensecondary institutions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for job seeker
As for a new graduate, I blew out my first several interviews. People keep telling me it's normal and that's how you learn the expereince. When asking their advice, they said you can't predict the question they're going to ask you, so just relax and try your best. Well...that's only half true and not help me too much to get the job. I am glad that I stopped lying to myself, finding excuses not to prepare interviews and bought this book. I bought five interview reference books and this is the best one among all. It helps you build up your confidence and really let you feel you're going to A's all the questions during the interview, which is true. It's the tool that helps you not only prepare the interview but also negotiate salary. (plus research organization) I followed all the steps and got the offer right away. (Amazing! too soon to believe) And also increased 3,000 more on my starting salary. (I know I can gain more according to the instruction in the book, but I am satisfied with the result since this is my first job.) This is the first time I write review for a book. To express the appreciation to the author, I do recommend all the job seeker, no matter you are new graduate or expereinced, to read this book. The book covers all aspects. Good luck!! (This is also important. =))

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're gonna read a book, read this one!
Everyone gets nervous at the thought of interviewing, so why not lesson the pain and be as prepared as possible. In fact, after reading Interview Power, I felt MUCH more confident and relaxed. This book gives you insight on the interviewing process, what interviewers are thinking, tons of sample questions to be prepared for, and also coaches you through identifying and selling your strengths effectively.

After reading this book, my interviewing skills improved so much I've been offered every job I've since interviewed for. I am always recommending this book to my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books for the money right here!
After graduating from a technical-level bachelor's degree program, I was under the impression that my "tough" interviewing days would be over! Ah! It even became worse...

This book provides excellent examples to some of the most toughest questions I've personallly ever been asked by a Recruiter, Headhunter, or Boss. You know, I've always thought the art of interviewing as something of a "game" that evil HR people play on their lowly subjects. If you really read this book, and apply Mr. Washington's principles, I think you'll definately come out way ahead of the pack. Now I am confident that I will be ahead of the pack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best guide to polish your interviewing
As a career counselor, my clients often ask me a lot of questions about interview techniques. This book answers all of them, from how to dress, how to act, how to respond to difficult questions, how to address gaps orother problems in your work history, and so much more. This is the bestguide I have come across for such information, and I consistently recommendit to my clients who want to cover all of their bases.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book to get your ready for job interview
A really good book that got you ready for an interview. I bought it mostly for the questions most asked in an interview, but it also gave you info on how to handle the various types of interview situations, how to ask formore money and how to sell yourself. Recommended reading for anyone who isgetting ready to find another job and dreads the interveiw. ... Read more

The dreaded job interview - having to attend one can be quite
draining. Most people experience one at least once in their
working life.It is part of the hiring cycle.

What a lot of job seekers lack is the skill set required to
sell themselves.An interview is a two-way street.It is an
exchange of information and ideas with the aim of impressing
each other.

This can be a daunting task from both sides of the table.
Both parties need to be aware of what is required from the
process, to achieve success. It is not easy to do this but
the aim of an interview is to obtain a successful outcome.

All people seeking employment can learn how to improve their
interview skills.Techniques are available that will help to
improve their prospects of getting jobs.Carole Martin's
book is an excellent source to guide people in the right
direction.

Full of valuable information, the book will add immense value
to a person's armory in the quest for a job.It is a book I
strongly recommend to every job seeker.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
Kate Wendleton, an authority on job searches and career development, discusses techniques for getting interviews once you focus on your target job market. After a brief overview of the job-hunting process, she explains how to obtain interviews by networking effectively and building relationships. She discusses how to do mailings, answer ads, use interviews productively, work with search firms, develop phone skills and create a well-organized campaign. The book suffers from some repetition among chapters and some overlap with Wendleton's Building a Great Resume, especially in the beginning of both books. Great Resume offers more information about assessing your career path than the present volume, a solid, basic book apparently geared to the relatively inexperienced job hunter seeking a novice to mid-level position. We from getAbstract recommend the book's well-organized strategic overview to most job seekers, with the caveat that high level executives and managers may already know much of the material.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good But Read Targeting Your Job Market First
Kate Wendleton displays a positive pro-active attitude in Getting Interviews for Job Hunters. She gives many positive tips. One should always look to target all available opportunities. In addition, one should expect that a good job search takes a lot of time.

She emphasizes the points of doing a good search.Always ask for referrals as that will keep many possibilities on the fire. You will know you are doing well when you hear some of the same names come up constantly in your search. This is a small world.

Like the section that sums up the types of Executive Search Firms.Good analysis of retainer firm vs. contingency.

The sample cover letters and thank you notes are a mixed bag though. Many of them are way too long.In the age of a tight job market that has the time to read a long winded cover letter.Madge Wrigley's letter in addition to being to long and winding (eight paragraphs, my goodness) also has too much of a chummy tone. Most bosses can be a little too suspicious of someone who gathers too much information on them and couples that with ramblings.I say write a short three to four paragraph letter and come right to the point.

Also the idea that someone could have 6-10 opportunities at one time thru networking seems pretty unlikely.Three to five seems possible but who knows.Maybe the down economy has me a bit pessimistic.

Anyway, there is certainly some good information here.None the less choose Kate's Targeting Your Job Market first as that has a better glossary and fun exercises as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tool to get your job search going
This book gives you the information you need to get started on aneffective job search.Kate Wendleton has done a great job.I recommendthis book.
