Managerial Accounting, 9th edition
This is an outstanding book, which covers complex topics on a very friendly manner. Maybe for some readers this book may seem hard to understand, so I strongly recommend everybody to think over the necessity of studying managerial accounting. For me as a person who works with internal finance and who makes prompt decisions upon raw timely data, the book was a relief. It covers such immensely important topics as break-even, leverage, cost behavior and structure, and so forth. One suggestion, do not learn everything by heart, it's useless. You never learn everything in managerial accounting. Use the book as a reference for your everyday needs. Good luck.

good accounting book
not a big fan of accounting, but i must admit, this is a really good textbook. anytime i got lost in my classes or lecture, this book explains things in a very clear and organized way to help you better understand. the problems are long but extremely helpful in getting a handle on the methods. the real world examples they use in the text also adds to whatever concept you're learning. i couldn't imagine a better managerial accounting book at the moment. so 5 stars. yup. i'm so glad i'm done with this course...

Not for the novice
What I do not understand about these accounting textbooks is that they give all this wonderful case studies and examples, but when it comes to mba exam times we are faced with far more difficult questions that require prompt and correct answers. This book is so long winded and goes on about topics that are irrelevant. Hope this is not part of your MBA course, We need examples with solutions applicable to examination guidelines...

DO NOT BUY THIS!
Studying economy at a Swedish university i was forced to buy this book for the course in management accounting. This is the worst buy i have ever done. First of all i read the three first chapters and couldn't let myself be tortured any longer so i dropped the course. It is ultimately the most boring peace of litterature i have ever seen and it's filled with useless junk. There's one row of valuable information on every two pages. I can't believe these 110-year old senile authors are allowed to write books at all. I am now studying for the same course by reviewing old exams, and boy is that easy compared to reading that brick.

Very decent book
I read and reread, this is very good in presenting concepts and illustrating through examples. Very interesting exercises. I am keeping this book for future reference. It could use some reorgnization of chapters. Seem like authors were not sure what concepts to present in what chapter as all of them were overlayed, perhaps justified in attempting to present the concept in understandble way

Start as a novice, end as an 'expert'
'The difference between profit and loss is the difference between costs and turnover' was a saying of my professor. But this book shows that there are lots of different calculations of those profits and loss. This book learns the reader step by step new ways to calculate the turnover and the costs, budgets, planning and presenting of the figures everyone is waiting for. Thanks to the exercises the basic calculations can be practiced and the cases present a first brief introduction what is going on in the real world, focusing on a special topic, but without removing the students freedom.

A standard text for cost accounting
If you are looking for a single volume "bible" on cost accounting, this is likely the best book in print today to fit that bill. It is comprehensive in scope yet has many strengths to ease comprehension and aid readability.

The topics are grouped in six main sections each with several chapters on that topic. Since it is unlikely that you will read this reference / text book left to right as you would a novel this organization helps in finding what you are looking for and focusing on the area(s) of interest.

There are many helpful illustrations and a good use of color as well as chapter summaries and all the exercises you could ever hope for.

A very excellent feature is the use of application problems that take you step-by-step through building an Excel spreadsheet. This is tremendously useful.

The web support is also a good help as well as the streaming video vignettes.

I honestly find this topic very interesting and the 11th edition of this book to be a very valuable resource.

Good definitions, bad examples.
I find this book very difficult to understand. Too often, there are formulas written right into sentences, and not in any special order. I would much prefer that the definition for a particular term is given in a sentence, then have the formula off to the right, or in the middle of the page, separated from the definition. This book gives very good definitions of terms, but very poor examples of the exercises that are given in the back of the chapters for review. In the chapter, there is maybe one type of problem, yet in the back of the chapter, 10 different problems too different from the given example.

In graduate school, I utilized this text. In addition, the work
was helpful in preparing for and passing the Uniform CPA Exam.
There is good coverage of cost-volume analysis, equivalent
units, margin analysis and other important topics for qualifying
examinations i.e. CPA Exam. The tables and graphical
presentations are helpful as are the problem sets. This work is
for the serious student in accounting.The course requires some
serious study, particularly in the area of process costing.

the best costing book
I've studied cost accounting for 2 years in Hong Kong. The first year I used a really bad text book named 'Costing', I hated studying Costing. However after using the 'Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis (10 Edition)', I become interested in Costing and Management Accounting. And deceide to have CMA exam in future. THIS BOOK IS REALLY GOOD ONE.

A Big Dose of Managerial Accounting
This book is very good for teaching you managerial accounting. I used this book in college and found it to actually be of use, unlike a lot of college textbooks. You could read the chapter and be able to do the exercises at the end of the chapter.

I mean, you know the types of books where they have questions and it's literally impossible to deduce how to answer the questions from the chapter. This book is not like that. It teaches you how to prepare specialized documents for internal business usage. Need a textbook for Management Accounting? Here is one!!!!!
A very nice and neat accounting textbook! This book explains basic accounting concepts clearly, which helps me to master basic concepts of accounting with ease and simplicity. I had a great time to read this book, and it makes learning accounting as interesting as it can be. The introduction and summary of each chapter also help me to understand a big picture of management accounting as well as small details. The treatment of management accounting is thorough and highly advanced with many detailed examples in reality.
The reason that I recommend this book is extending basic concepts with real-world examples which apples underlying concepts of management accounting. This book shows how accounting is used and analyzed in actual case situations. Especially I noticed that the authors are experts at the Balanced Scorecard. The Balanced Scorecard chapter presents the most important concept and examples in a very organized manner. This book also encompasses important new topics in management accounting such as activity-based cost systems, JIT, target costing, pricing and product planning, performance measurement systems, and budgets.
I heard some textbooks too much focus on questions of calculating cost and deriving quantitative solutions. Unlike those textbooks which only teach mechanical procedures without understanding underlying factors, this textbook provides insightful knowledge about how management accounting information facilitates decision- making through various analysis tools.

Too expensive, Junk and waste of Money
I cant believe Professionals cant explain topics in a easy words. Trying to use grandma stories and without explaining where numbers come its impossible to understand.

1) explanations are not good at all very confusing if you are a beginner.
2) Examples are like grandma tale and will make you sleepy.
3) dull and boring.
4) the authors need to put them self in the students shoes rather than assuming they are teaching a CPA.
I would recommend Schaums Series or barrons series for learning, Its easy and also easy on your wallet...compared to this...

Just awful ! Invest in a good supplemental book/study guide
My gosh, I have never read such a poorly written book! Wasn't there an editor at Prentice Hall to have, at least, reviewed this book prior of it going out to print? The poor grammar usage, the garble & ambiguity of explaing the concepts; it truly lacks direction...where are the solutions to the problem exercises?

I consider myself a strong avid reader, but I have found myself re-reading a page or two before pressing on.

If this is a required textbook for your accounting class, I highly suggest investing in a good supplemental study guide to aid you with this book. Good luck!!

I'm afraid this text just doesn't cut it!!
I've just completed my managerial accounting course with an "A" grade DESPITE having been assigned this text. These authors, like many accounting authors, don't know how to use language to convey the concepts they're attempting to get across. (Does that mean they're "numbers people" who can't use language correctly to develop ideas?? Perhaps!!!) Even more so, the way they choose to conceptually develop managerial accounting theory is somewhat farcical. If you've been assigned this text from your instructor, RUN OUT NOW AND INVESTIGATE OTHER MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING TEXTS TO USE IN CONJUCTION WITH IT. (Try "Managerial Accounting" Weygandt, Kieso and Kimmel) The problem with "Management Accounting" is that it has little precision in describing the main issues of managerial accounting and wants to be an Operations Management text or Management text rather than an authentic Managerial Accounting text. As students, let's vote with our wallets and tell these accounting authors to get a 2nd degree in English so that they can actually convey to us the ideas they're attempting to convey!!! Tell your professor he/she needs to wake up and change texts! The book was written for people who really don't want to actually learn Managerial Accounting theory, but want to pretend to have learned it. It can't describe the critical concepts in enough detail for you to get a good grip on the material - and it's conceptual development of the theory is confusing. Switch it!

I would not recommend this book to anyone who has not have any prior Managerial Accounting classes or sufficient work experience in this area. The way the topics are presented in the book requires familiarity with a number of related concepts in order to gain full understanding. Additionally, there is a number of instances in which concepts are introduced in a given chapter, but not explained until a later one, which makes it really confusing for those exposed to Managerial Accounting for the first time. ... Readable and informative starting point
I've read a number of books and literally thousands of web pages of information about Sarbanes-Oxley, and have to rank this book as the best starting point for stakeholders who are peripherally involved in compliance. The reasons are:

(1) It's readable! This is not a dry, boring tome, but a highly readable summary of Sarbanes-Oxley, what it is (and isn't), and realistic examples and anecdotes to reinforce the material.
(2) It covers a surprisingly lot of ground for a book aimed at a non-practitioner audience. The Control Smart Framework, detailed advice on identifying threats and vulnerabilities, and how to protect yourself are invaluable to anyone directly or indirectly involved in Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.

In addition to the rich information and clear explanations of key elements of Sarbanes-Oxley I like the appendices, which also provide useful information - especially appendices B (Key Performance Indicator Reporting), C (Examples of Key Performance Indicators) and D (Control Activities).

This book will quickly get you up-to-speed about Sarbanes-Oxley and its ramifications, and will do so relatively painlessly compared to other books on the basics of the Act.

If you're looking for a more in-depth book, especially one that addresses the scope and complexity of Section 404 compliance, I highly recommend "How to Comply with Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404: Assessing the Effectiveness of Internal Control (ISBN 0471653667). Informative and Enjoyable Reading
Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOA) is probably the single most important law affecting corporate governance and financial disclosure since the US securities laws of the early 1930s.
This book describes in a practical and concise manner the complexity of Sarbanes-Oxley Act for non-financial managers and directors, and gives a pathway model to develop an efficient control environment of businesses. I found very useful and straightforward to implement the Control Smart approach to help obliterate vulnerabilities and develop a strong defense against corporate fraud.
I think that this book is a valuable, must read guide for both, financial and non-financial managers. I would also recommend it as reference manual for management training programs as well as business schools.

Smooth reading and very informative!
I found the book to be smooth reading and very informative. The book provides detailed examples of internal control issues from actual companies. I have a newfound understanding of these issues now, because of the level of detail and the varied perspectives provided in by the author. I would recommend this book to anyone in a managerial position concerned with internal controls in their organization.

An unusually relevant and perceptive guide
The title to this book, while timely, doesn't really do the content justice, for the book is more than just a guide to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act - it addresses a range of corporate risk management issues to relevent to middle level managers up through board members. Scott Green manages to strike a good balance between discussions of strategic issues and of practical implementation considerations in the areas of control and fraud prevention mechanisms. It also contains some of the more insightful assessments I've seen of "what went wrong" at some of the more notable corporate failures of recent times. The book is written in a highly readable fashion and I'd recommend it to any manager, company advisor, or board member looking to get a better handle on considerations related to Sarbanes-Oxley and the topic of internal controls in general.

This book is highly accessible and the concepts easy to understand, with many real-life examples to help the reader focus. Everything you need to know in finance - superb!
I found this book very complete and comprehensive as a reference source. It covers the strategic and operational perspectives of the finance function. This is one of the best "CFO" books, together with "CFO Architect" and "CFO Handbook". A little bit overpriced - I would have put it in the US$60 range. Reading this book is like taking an advanced course in preparing yourself for the CFO career. It is very didactic and straightforward. A recommendation for the author: in a future edition, you might consider expanding on the topics of international finance, value based management and corporate restructurings. ... Read more

I have found this book to be a okay for college classes
The book does a alright job of teaching students how to learn accounting.It lacks answers to which could definitly help students. The book's main advantage is that it has many real life examples that help students relateto accounting.

Well laid out, not a strain to follow or learn from.
This book was real easy to pick up the accounting basics that the authors presented. The text is broken up with graphic presentations and real world examples which makes it easy on the eyes and the brain. At the end of everychapter is illustrative problems, discussion questions, multiple choice,exercises and chapter problems. When you've completed a chapter you reallyfeel you know the material. Plus there are tons of internet stuff. Worththe money and cheaper than the other accounting book I was forced to buy.

good college textbook, should be cut to 900 pages
Good if you have lots of time to kill, because it has some pages devoted to useless information such as the stupid poem on page 1022 that hasnothing to do with accounting. It appears the authors placed lots of"real world" trivia that is boring and useless. Entire page of964 talks about the reason why Coca-Cola will not do business with Lakersbecause they signed Pepsi spokeman Shaq O'Neill, it has nothing to do withthe subject butthe extra pages makes you think you got something for thehigh priced book. If you absolutely need this book, go borrow it from yourpublic library and save your money.The book manuscript was NEVER approvedby a CPA or business owner but a long list of college instructors. This was my class textbook
Don't be deceived by the many colorful photos and illustrations used throughout this textbook - it is not an elementary "Dummies Guide to Cost Accounting" primer.

I found Jiambalvo's book clearly communicated all of the relevant accounting topics one would expect to learn in an MBA level managerial accounting course. The accounting examples in the book are interesting, nicely explained, and the chapter progression does a good job of incrementally building on previous lessons.

The CD that comes with the book is surprisingly well-done. It is well-produced and provides very good supplementary support to each chapter in the book.

It would have been nice though if the CD would have included electronic versions of the cases. There were many times I spent an extra ten minutes or so simply retyping in spreadsheets from the book that could have been done for the reader.

AN OUTSTANDING BOOK ON MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING
I am teaching Management Accounting to the students of MBA and professional bodies for the last 21 years and have critically studied some of the best available text books on the subject. This book is very well written and covers the major topics.It is an outstanding book particularly for beginners and MBA students for a one semister course.The author has proovided good illustrations and a variety of exercises and problems at the end of chapter. However those who wish to specialise in Managerial Accounting need additional readings. I adopted this book for MBA students since its 1st edition was published.At present I have adopted the 5th edition which has been revised in line with the changing environment.Majority of the students have very much appreciated this book because it is easy to understand.I have observed that some students of professional bodies are also referring to this book for reference purpose.

Finest Managerial Accounting Text I've Read!
This text is very valuable in that it doesn't require the student to needlessly crunch numbers in order to get an understanding of the concepts.The author cleverly presents the information in such a way that by doingshort exercises the reader gains insight as to the underlying processesinvolved in creating managerial/cost accounting systems.This is far morevaluable than following the rote-memorization technique that mostmanagerial accounting texts utilize.Also, the inclusion of the newer,more analytical, techniques of structuring costing systems was particularlyhelpful.
