5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional resource
This book does not much dwell on the details of Sarbanes-Oxley - the reader is assumed to have an understanding of the salient details - but, instead lays out a comprehensive action plan for complying with Section 404.

The author begins with three chapters covering the overall goals and objectives, roles and responsibilities, assessment issues, and an excellent chapter about internal control criteria. Each of these chapters ends in appendices that support the compliance initiative.

Milestones, covered in Chapters 3 through 7, are clearly defined with respect to what it will take, key issues, and appendices that provide examples, guidelines, checklists and other material that support compliance. I was impressed by the straightforward approach, the complete and clear identification of all issues - and especially so regarding IT, developing documentation, and testing the controls - and the fact that the control objectives were carefully mapped to the COSO Framework.

If you want a realistic view of the scope and complexity of Section 404 compliance this book will provide it. If you are an IT professional I strongly recommend visiting Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ASIN B00006BW74), which makes available a free 84-page document titled "IT Control Objectives for Sarbanes-Oxley". For more general information, there is a commercial site that provides news and updates on Sarbanes-Oxley issues (ASIN B0000AM23N), as well as the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (ASIN B00013Y80Y), which provides rule making information and a means to comment on proposed rules. Book Description

New best practices for the evolving business

Everyone knows that adopting accounting best practices can improve efficiency and reduce error rates in the accounting department, but less obvious are the benefits gained from better reporting of information to other parts of the company. More accurate data reported faster can play an integral role in both short- and long-term strategic planning. Accounting guru Steven Bragg explains how to leverage this and other opportunities in his authoritative Accounting Best Practices, Third Edition.

Bragg adds over sixty new best practices to his benchmark resource, concentrating primarily on the areas of:

  • Internal auditing
  • Accounts payable
  • Finance
  • Payroll

Bragg highlights the dos and don’ts of best practices implementation, and a new reference system renders the expansive collection of best practices readily accessible. Accounting and financial managers, internal and external auditors, and consultants will find Accounting Best Practices, Third Edition to be a peerless resource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A 10,000% return on the investment.
This book has the right idea of putting the main points in the tables for quick reference and the narrative for each point. In addition, I like the Ease, Duration and Cost of implementation of each best practice which gives me an idea for prioritization. Ordered more copies for the departments. Wish they had more books like these that give practical suggestions instead of theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable Resource
I found Accounting Best Practices a valuable resource for objectively evaluating my accounting department's business practices and procedures. Mr. Bragg has identified the specific tasks of each of the accounting departments's functions and has made suggestions for efficiencies. The author states the key factors in the successful implementation of the best practices in accounting.

Each chapter presents an exhibit of "Implementation Issues Best Practices" describing the implementation costs, ease and duration of each suggested practice change. This information allowed me to implement the easiest and least costly changes to my accounting department's procedures, thus gaining credibility with upper managment to support the changes involving addional resources.

As a Controller, Best Practices assisted me to focus on the value-added tasks of my department and identifying where my staff's efforts are best utilized to support the corporate objectives. My department has become more efficient, allowing for individual growth opportunities. I highly recommend this book for anyone managing an accounting department. A very concise book that is easy to read and use.

This explosive issue and its implications are fully explored in "Real Numbers." 5-0 out of 5 stars Transforming the Bean Counter...
The book's presentation makes a case for accurate and timely information that is easily understood and actionable. Whereby it is now time to take the benefits learned from implementing lean manufacturing on the shop floor into the office and remove the blinders of old traditional accounting systems. Doing so transforms the accountant from bean counter to a valued partner in the business.

Discussions include:

* a strong section on performance measurement - what the financial team should be measuring in place of current traditional accounting reports.

* how to streamline the process and bring about meaningful change

* a practical methodology for making the transition away from cost accounting - to go from micro accounting to macro accounting

* plain English management financial systems - what they are, why to use, benefits, and how to get them using the one day close method

* new concepts in budgeting (the lean budget) and capital planning whereby one looks at reduction in inventory and flexibility instead of per part cost

* lean acquisitions - what to do with all that new found cash

The final three chapters are my favorite where Jean and Orest take their boardroom management skills and depart wisdom to the reader. Here it is explained why the CEO and CFO must become active leaders, the benefits of breaking from tradition, and the twelve principles of lean accounting.

This is a must read book for everyone who wants to shed the role of bean counter or who has struggled with bean counters and their misunderstanding the accounting side of lean manufacturing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The authors provide some solid, invaluable advice
How can a manager gain a real picture of a company's performance? Real Numbers: Management Accounting In A Lean Organization helps managers understand management accounting practices, which often produce complex financial statements which have little to do with reality. Each of the authors is a CFO who probes management accounting systems and how simplicity and clarify can be restored to an organization's accounting system. The authors provide some solid, invaluable advice on tweaking accounting practices to get the most from facts and figures generated by accountants.

5-0 out of 5 stars Translation Key between Production and Accounting
Do you remember your favorite cheat sheet from language class? It was a book or a pamphlet or even a tightly scrawled crib sheet with key reminders on how to navigate the gap between your birth tongue and a whole new world. You carried it around with you to help find your way.
Jean and Ori have put together the best cheat sheet for people straddling the language gap between modern manufacturing and old school accounting. I can't recommend "Real Numbers" enough. Mine is already dog-eared. I carry it with me to international planning meetings to help me translate the smoke and mirrors that can fill the room.
"Real Numbers" is filled with concise, easy-to-understand chapters that assist any decision-maker in understanding the transition from bean counter to business partner. Every chapter has a value-adding how-to approach to overcome the major mental hurdles blocking lean enterprise: controlling wasteful transactions instead of eliminating them, supporting rear-view driving instead of agile leadership, covering every contingent instead of reporting accurately what is needed and when.
Most companies attempting lean transition run into the failure of business accounting to update its methods in stride with lean thinking. This book explains how accountants can see themselves in a new role bridging that gap. And seeing that new role with a shared accounting language is half the battle - won.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, lean makes it to finance
It is about time that someone wrote a book this stellar conveying the power of lean in financial accounting. Every company that is looking to become lean should read this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Numbers = Real Lean Applications
It touched on what we learned in Lean Accounting Training and will be an excellent resource to back up that training as we apply the principles in our own Lean journey. It gives real world examples of Lean Accounting applied in two companies that have truly embraced the Lean Enterprise: Lantech and Wiremold are both featured.

Book Description

The 5th edition of Managerial Accounting: Concepts and Empirical Evidence, by Dr. Lawrence A. Gordon (the Ernst & Young Alumni Professor of Managerial Accounting in the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland) and published by McGraw-Hill, is leading the way in showing the impact of the new information economy on managerial accounting. Although maintaining its grounding in economic concepts, this new edition of the book has explicitly integrated discussions on the Internet, e-commerce, enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, and Internet-based (often called dot-com) firms into such managerial accounting topics as profit planning, activity-based costing, pricing decisions and performance measures. For example, in the chapter on financial performance measures, the reader finds a discussion on how the traditional link between accounting earnings and market value needs to be reconsidered for Internet-based firms. In addition, relevant websites are provided on the inside of the back cover of the book.Furthermore, supplementary material is easily accessed and downloaded via the Internet. Like earlier editions, the fifth edition of the book is still intended to be a text with a "research flavor." As such, the book is primarily intended for a first-year MBA/MS course in managerial accounting. The book is also appropriate for a first course in managerial accounting for talented undergraduate students. By focusing on the book's more quantitative material (including Appendices), strategy/organizational change material, and the references to empirical studies, the book would be appropriate for a graduate level, as well as undergraduate level, advanced managerial accounting course. Earlier editions of the book have also been very successfully utilized in executive development programs and the new edition should be even more appropriate for such use due to its emphasis on the new information economy. For more information about this book, check out the author's home page at the University of Maryland (http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/accounting/lgordon/). ... Read more

Praise for The Firm of the Future

"In The Firm of the Future, Paul Dunn and Ron Baker create an intellectual challenge for firm leaders. They are truly two of the best critical thinkers today. Together they provide the reader with a wealth of thought-provoking ideas. This is an intellectual masterpiece."
–August J. Aquila, PhD
Managing Director, American Express Tax and Business Services
Coauthor, CPAs That Sell and CPA Firm Merger Strategies That Work

"Paul Dunn and Ron Baker have done it again. Living up to their reputation for challenging conventional wisdom, Dunn and Baker present a new paradigm for the professions to understand the dynamic forces at play in the professional practice of the twenty-first century. The Firm of the Future is a brilliant work that adds a new dimension to the old formula for success in a professional service firm. Dunn and Baker clearly lay out a new road map to help leaders understand the differences between leveraging people and leveraging knowledge; between billing for time and pricing for value; and between doing things right and doing the right things. This new paradigm for the firm of the future will help professionals more accurately plan and structure their firm in a way that acknowledges and capitalizes on today’s marketplace, technological opportunities, customer expectations, and human capital needs. Any practice leader who wants to ensure success for their organization should be compelled to read The Firm of the Future."

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for the professional service provider!
After reading this book, you'll need to place it alongside your desktop dictionary, Thesaruas and Ron's first book "The Professional's Guide to Value Pricing. This is how strong of an impact their message has made on me.

After reading the first two editions of Ron's book, I didn't think he would be able to improve much on the message of switching to Value Pricing. Boy, was I wrong! He and Paul Dunn have done an amazing job of getting the reader to think differently. As with the radical theme of trashing the timesheet in "The Professional's Guide to Value Pricing", they do a masterful job of convincing you why the old "Revenue Equation" must be replaced with the forward-thinking "Profit Equation". They go on to introduce other new topics not found amongst professional services firms such as developing your Intellectual, Structural and Social Capital, emphasizing effectiveness over efficiency and of course Value Pricing. As is typical of Ron's writing style, and complemented by Paul, their reasoning for making this paradigm shift is well supported and well reasoned.

I've been using practicing Value Pricing for about 5 1/2 years now and I can tell you that it works. In my own firm, I've slowly begun implementing some of their new concepts but with a new perception. I'm convinced these principles will work for me and they can for you as well.

After reading this book, you'll definitely want to keep it handy as a useful reference guide!

4-0 out of 5 stars Old Schoolers will cringe at some of the suggestions
This book champions many of the beliefs I've held for years at working at Big 4, regional, and small public accounting firms. Mainly, that time sheets, hourly rates, billable hours, etc. is a completely misguided and outdated manner to try to capture costs and price services.

I just resgined from a firm to start my own practice. While there, I was discussing this book with one of the firm's Partners. When I suggested the radical idea of no timesheets, he replied, "how will you know the people are working." As this book effectively points out and analyzes, firms just aren't hiring the right people!

The book does get a bit redundant at times, and does put forth some ideas that seem a bit crazy (such as 100% money back gaurantees in your engagement letters if the client doesn't like the service). However, I think that overall the book does make some very excellent points. Firms that are courageous enough to make changes based on ideas generated from this book may be the "firms of the future"

Finally, despite the title, this book is for CPAs and CPA firms. Lawyers and other service providers will not get as much out of it. For those starting firms, or for those looking for ideas to improve their current firms, this book should help.

5-0 out of 5 stars challenges the old paradigms
Paul Dunn & Ronald J Baker's new book "The Firm of the Future and the Future of the Firm" challenges the old paradigms of the professional firm and clearly shows the way forward.

Although aimed at the professional firm, the book is relevant to all service businesses.

If you attended Paul Dunn's seminars and read Ronald J Baker's books, then this will be a useful refresher. If you haven't - then oh boy what a ride! Let the journey begin.

In addition this book introduced to me the concept of Intellectual Capital, a framework that I'll certainly use in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars I hope my competion ignores this book!
Baker and Dunn certainly get it. This thouroughly researched and insightful book had me breaking out my highlighter, dog-earing pages, reading aloud to my wife. Firm of the Future got me fired up, and dreaming again.

Baker and Dunn occupy the same real estate on my bookshelf as George Gilder, Peter Druker,Walt Disney, Harvey MacKay, and Michael Gerber. Baker and Dunn apply the science of economics and the wisdom of GOOD BUSINESS SENSE to professional services in a way that could revolutionize the professional services industries in a dramatic fasion.

I apologize for the following trite blurb: "If there is one business book the professional must read, it's Firm of the Future" - but it is true. If you consider yourself "forward thinking" and want to regain joy from your professional service business, this is your book.

I sincerely hope that my competition avoids this book; or at best, reads it, forms a committee, and organizes a task force to look into the issues of "value billing." While my competition arrogantly holds thier client's hand, a quiet revolution will be occurring; and the customer will seek a better experience- with professionals who are forming the Firms of the Future.

I've read hundreds of business books, from the popular to the technical, economic theory, touchy-feely, to chainsaw management....This book got me excited about being a CPA again! valuable at a time when the profession is going through a credibility crisis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do clients want to buy hours?
Expanding on the principles discussed in Value Pricing, Ron Baker has teamed up with Paul Dunn to share their theories, insights and ideas on how professionals (in particular CPAs) view and price their services. The Firm of the Future is written around major themes and includes individual commentary from Ron and Paul.

Are you creating value for your clients and charging for the value you provide, or are you charging your clients based on the time you spend? If you are not thinking about the value you are creating for your clients, watch out! Every professional who reads this book will be thinking about the value they can add not only to their clients, but yours. What about fees? Do you think that you can match or beat my price? "Any firm can compete on price; it is truly a fool's game. In contrast, competing based on Total Quality Service, positive customer experiences, and transformations requires more thought, creativity and investment." This book could be your first investment in achieving Total Quality Service and differentiating yourself from the competition. ... Read more

As an MBA candidate who spends far too much time reading textbooks, I found Seven Keys a welcome change in my business reading. It's readable, well-organized, full of real-world examples, and it lets me quickly know how I can ready an organization for effective strategic account management. These authors clearly have busy people in mind. I read the chapters that were of particular interest and then I read the remainder. Time well-spent.

from this book that it's actually a key
account program in disguise.

Now we can use the authors' common-sense
guidance to focus on the customers who
truly have strategic potential, align our
entire company behind the initiative instead
of just the sales force, and set up an
account manager development program that
really works. Great job!

Book Description

"One of the ways companies are looking for competitive advantage in this frenetic [business] environment . . . is through the use of a tactical technique called shared services. . . . In this book, we bridge [the] chasm between the theory of how a shared services operation 'ought to' work and the practical issues involved in how to make it work, how to carry out a successful implementation of a shared service operation in your business.—from the Preface.

Gaining competitive advantage in today's fierce business environment requires focus throughout the company on value, as measured by quality, cost, speed, and service. In the quest for superior performance, a growing number of companies are now turning to shared services, a tactical technique by which corporations can organize financial and other transaction-oriented activities to reduce costs and provide better service to business unit partners. Written by four authorities, three PricewaterhouseCoopers consultants and the executive who has directed the shared service efforts at Lucent Technologies, this comprehensive resource—the first of its kind—examines shared services from the macro issues that compel senior management to embrace this approach through the design and implementation of a shared services environment that leads to increased customer and shareholder value.

Of all the tools available for gaining competitive advantage, why shared services? One of the principal reasons is that it creates, through consolidation of often disparate activities, more of a "one company" feel among business units. The benefits of this are twofold: one, it enables companies to show a consistent face to clients and customers, vendors and suppliers, shareholders and potential shareholders; two, it provides increased flexibility to all of the business' operations, allowing corporate leaders to maintain a global perspective while at the same time allowing business unit leaders to take strong, customer-focused actions.

Providing both a domestic and global view, Shared Services addresses the full spectrum of issues, including:

  • Assessing whether shared services is right for you—issues to consider, goals to be reached.
  • Getting started—building support, establishing an effective organization, instituting continuous communication.
  • Setting up the infrastructure—billing shared services to business units, dealing with tax and legal entity issues.
  • International challenges—complexity, time zone, legal issues, currency stability, and security.
  • Program and project management—structures, planning, execution, and control.

A groundbreaking book that examines a timely and important topic, Shared Services is an accessible and thorough guide to what could be a critical component in achieving long-term business success.

This comprehensive resource is the first to introduce, explain, and explore shared services, an innovative business strategy that involves centralizing various business units, including accounting and transactional operations, to reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction. Presenting a practical and easy-to-follow blueprint for the smooth and sound implementation of shared services in your organization, Shared Services: Adding Value to the Business Units covers all the fundamentals, from how to get started to proper management techniques. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A useful book
There isn't much around on this subject and so it was good to find a book that was reasonably comprehensive. Apart from the advertising for a large CA firm and the message as to the necessity for consultants (shared services is after all a product and a money spinner for them)I thought it was useful. ...
