5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FOR CONTINUOUS PROCESS IMPROVEMENTS
This book is the best in the market so far for accounting process improvements. The author did a great job in outlining the traditional and revised accounting procedures. Lots of opportunities available to streamline the work process and enhance the information flow. There are lots of useful flowcharts and tables that you can apply to your company right away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book - It could make your career
I wish this book existed during the turbulent 80's and early 90's. Outmoded accounting system's, corporate reorganizations, high employee turnover, pressure to do more, faster with fewer resources. As a Controller, most of my biggest headaches involved the amount of time required to close the books. The original closing schedule was 10 days into the new period. Then it was 8 days. Then 5, then 4 days.

I can't even guess at the time I could have saved had I known the techniques the author demonstrates in Just-In-Time Accounting.

This is not your usual accounting tome, based on statistics and theory. This is real stuff. Built out of scar tissue, experience and real world solutions. They are not necessarily easy solutions but lasting solutions worth the effort to implement.

The content deals with streamlining some basic areas:

Cash - How to speed up the process but still keep control. Some very interesting ideas about corporate credit cards, using your bank and lock boxes to save time and money.

Sales & Accounts Receivable - Some good ideas about redundant approvals, and minimizing paper.

Inventory - With hundreds of physical inventories under my belt I can vouch for the absolutely necessity of doing what the author recommends. This area was one of my great bugaboo's. Nothing affects the balance sheet like an inventory error. This involves bills of material, suppliers, production records, and computer system's. This is a whole world in itself but the problem(s) and solutions are concisely described here. Get your inventory under control and the rest is cake.

Accounts Payable - Good stuff that took me a long time to discover on my own.

Cost Accounting - Mostly about why you need it and how it allows you to spot P&L problems before the month ends. This is one of the critical areas to review since it is necessary for faster closes. Get the major variances identified early in the month instead of wasting time digging it up 4 or 5 weeks after the events occurred. One comment I have is the need for weekly staff meetings to review what happened last week, how will it affect this week and what is being done about it. These meeting will point out problem areas for the controller to preempt delusional variance explanations after monthend.

Payroll - Many good ideas that work. I have used the barcode system's.

The Budget - You probably know about these already but there are some time-saving techniques to minimize constant re-casting and interations.

EDI - I'm not too familiar with this.

The Quick Close - It can be done. This tells you how and I can vouch for the soundness of the concept. I actually set a corporate-wide benchmark of 1-1/2 days using these techniques. In my view that is the real payoff since it is the realization and payoff of all the other hard work. Gives you more time to do yet another iteration of the budget.

Some of the examples apply to huge corporations but most of the principles are universal. I really can't find fault in this book. It tells the controller, in the real world, how to get your system(s) sorted out. I have seen many "instant pudding" or fad of the month cause real damage if it didn't really work. There is no downside to these techniques. This is motherhood and apple pie. You can't go wrong trying.

Book Description

Improve business efficiency, eliminate day-to-day mishaps, and prepare for the worst–with effective disaster contingency planning

Working in lower Manhattan on September 11th, 2001, Donna Childs became keenly aware of the need for small businesses to develop disaster contingency plans and grateful that her own business had implemented such plans and would remain financially sound. Now, with the assistance of IT consultant Stefan Dietrich, she draws upon her unique experience to present proven guidelines for small and midsize businesses to effectively prepare for catastrophes in Contingency Planning and Disaster Recovery: A Small Business Guide.

Childs and Dietrich take small business owners through every stage of disaster planning, from preparation to response to recovery. Specific issues addressed include:

  • What to do if the main office location is not accessible
  • Getting the business up and running again
  • Contacting third parties
  • Handling insurance claims
  • Adequate insurance for property, business interruption losses, and workers’ compensation
  • Rebuilding an IT infrastructure

Successful planning not only can limit the damage of an unforeseen disaster but also can minimize daily mishaps–such as the mistaken deletion of files–and increase a business’s overall efficiency. Contingency Planning and Disaster Recovery is the only contingency guide that small business owners need to ensure their company’s continued success. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes it can happen to you!
A superbly practical and comprehensive guide - cogent and succinct but thorough. Having just gone through an office disaster similar to worked examples and real life situations presented in the book, incurring tens of thousands of dollars of damages and subsequent insurance claims, I can highly recommend this book as a must read for prevention purposes and a user-friendly guide for when it happens to you. I never thought I would need it, and was so grateful to have a copy on hand to reassure my decision-making in working through all the clean-up afterwards. It is an excellent resource not only for small businesses, but also for any office situation - non-profits, community groups, churches, synagogues etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book provides excellent discussion of measures and ROI
This is the second Essentials book I purchased in the series and I can't rave enough about them. In my management position in one of the top financial industries, I need to understand what is going on but I don't need the technical details so many other books get into. These book provide great coverage on important topics -- they really help be to understand. I heard about and had a slight grasp on the use of ROI and other measures from my work, but I didn't really understand it until I read this book. Larkins provides an overview of the issues, a discussion of inbound and outbound transactions, and a discussion of major areas of concern in international taxation. The book also provides numerous tax planning and tax policy perspectives. International Applications of U.S. Income Tax Law is unique from other books in this area because it contains numerous examples, marginal tax rate analysis when applicable, and links to empirical studies involving issues in international taxation. The indispensable guide to detecting and solving financial crime in the office

Low-level financial crimes are a fact of life in the modern workplace. Individually these crimes are rarely significant enough to warrant the hiring of professional investigators, but if left unchecked, small crimes add up to big losses. In companies without dedicated fraud investigators, detecting and solving low-level crimes generally falls to managers and internal auditors. Financial Crime Investigation and Control offers tips, tools, and techniques to help professionals who lack investigative experience stem the tide of small financial crimes before it becomes a tsunami.

Inside you’ll find expert guidance on investigating and uncovering common types of fraud, including:

  • Credit card fraud
  • Consumer fraud
  • Kickbacks
  • Bid rigging
  • Inflated invoices
  • Inventory theft
  • Theft of cash
  • Travel and subsistence claims
  • Check fraud
  • ID fraud
  • Ghost employees
  • Misappropriation schemes
  • Computer-related crime
  • Financial statement fraud

5-0 out of 5 stars Applicable to more than auditors & compliance professionals
This is one of the few books about auditing and compliance that is written for general business managers instead of auditors. To be sure, the material represents an excellent training tool for auditors and compliance specialists who need to develop a company-wide awareness program as one tier in a comprehensive initiative. However, the main message in the book, and the approach it presents, is based on the fact that the responsibility for deterring fraud extends well beyond auditing and compliance.Indeed, the most effective deterrent is an aware management and workforce that is vigilant at all levels.

Three objectives of this book are:(1) serve as a primer on financial fraud, its impact on organizations and common exposures, and (2), give mangers who may not be trained in auditing guidance and techniques to investigate fraud if they find themselves tasked with doing so (a particularly common occurrence in small-to-medium businesses), (3) provide a comprehensive framework for detecting, investigating and dealing with fraud.

The full range of topics are covered and are presented without the professional auditing and compliance jargon, which makes it easy for general business professionals to understand.I like the way the authors addressed ethics, and especially like the chapter on whistleblowing (see "Merrill Lynch: The Cost Could Be Fatal" by Keith A. Schooley for a realistic view of how tricky this can be for all parties). In addition, I thought that the integrated approach that defines clearly articulated policies and procedures, and roles and responsibilities for all stakeholders is a critical success factor to making it all work. The reason is, like security, fraud control requires a defense in depth that depends on no single element of that defense.I also found the two appendices (A-Forensic Statement Analysis and B-An Introduction to Data Mining as a Fraud Risk Management Tool) invaluable.

For whom will this book be most useful?Managers, regardless of functional area or specialty, will gain insights into causes and steps to prevent fraud. It will also provide basic tools for investigating suspected fraud.

Professional auditors or compliance specialists will find a viable approach to developing and implementing a company-wide initiative that will significantly reduce fraud.

Corporate and IT security specialists will find a wealth of material that will support their own detection, investigation and action procedures, especially for the IT security specialist who is trained in forensics. ... Read more

Book Description

Praise for Designing Strategic Cost Systems

"One of the key principles I learned in my years as an auditor (both internal and external) was to ‘let the numbers speak to you.’ Through a practical and accessible approach, Lianabel Oliver confirms this idea and then takes it further. She challenges us to make sure that these numbers are presented in language that can be understood by the operating management and that the numbers truly reflect the cost components of our products and services. Oliver then gives us a structured method for developing that understandable language so that the numbers may, in fact, be adequately communicated, allowing us to make informed management decisions. This book is a must-read for those who want to clearly let the numbers speak to their senior management."
–Angel Torres, CPA, President and CEO
Bacardi Corporation, Puerto Rico

"The author highlights the need for the strategic integration of all aspects of the business from the cost perspective. The concepts presented in this book can be readily applied to manufacturing, service, or any other economic sector. I highly recommend this book as a valuable tool for the evaluation, control, and measurement of an organization regardless of its size or years in business."
–Manuel Cidre, Chairman
Puerto Rico Manufacturers Association

"Oliver’s work is an excellent resource for cost management practitioners committed to the design of strategic cost systems that deliver value-added cost data to decision makers. The author provides the reader with valuable insight into both internal and external manifestations of dysfunctional systems and the remedial steps requisite to the development of effective system redesigns that can be successfully deployed for competitive advantage."

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Tool For Cost Accounting Instructors!!
"I am an undergraduate accounting professor, and I recommend this book as a complement to your cost accounting text book. It is my experience that most undergraduate students lack working experience that would help them link the "concepts" in the text books with the "real world." I found that it is very difficult for students to visualize the following: how costs flow through a service or manufacturing company; how those costs are captured in a company¹s cost accounting systems; and what are the sources of the data, where do the numbers used in the calculations of the costs of products or services come from? This book helps them to "see" the flow of the data. Chapter 5, How to Calculate Costs, wraps up the concepts of direct material, direct labor and overhead, and enables the students to become aware of how costs are calculated in a simple and systematic way. Even though this book is easy to read and to understand, I recommend it for students beyond their second year of college. It is written in a practical way, and, while I was reading it, I felt that I was there working in the company.

I think that this book is a necessary tool in cost accounting

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for business professionals!
This book is outstanding because it describes the reality that many organizations are facing with their cost systems and provides the tools necessary to overcome them. The information is presented in a way that is simple, easy to understand and actionable by the reader. It also provides access to a supporting website where simulations, models, exercises, and key terms can be used by readers to adapt the concepts presented to their particular organizations.

This book is a must for those business professionals that are involved in the planning, design, or re-design of their organization's cost system. It provides a step-by-step approach from the detection of an obsolete cost system to the performance measurement after the system is implemented. It also describes the common errors that should be avoided in order to have a successful system implementation.

As highlighted by the author: "A cost system should not be focused on analyzing the past, but in making the critical link among operational measures, resource utilization and cost in order to impact the future". Without a doubt this book will significantly contribute to the knowledge base and expertise of any organization that uses it as a reference to evaluate the effectiveness of their cost system as a decision-making tool. ... The Seventh Edition features new and revised chapters on e-business, inventory valuation, accounting best practices, business planning, strategic planning, and tax planning. All technology chapters have been brought up to date as well.

It is very good book if you are a controller of small to mid-size firm. However, some chapters (e.g. client-server) are written by outside consultants, which are not flowing consistently with other chapters of the book. Overall the book is a good overview of a controller position. ... Read more

"Although capacity management is a fundamental concern, it–like many other fundamentals–is often scanted. In fact, there’s little that’s more important to most companies than their ability to manage their capacity, which is simply the ability to do work.Essentials of Capacity Management does a great job of giving a quick, yet thorough, overview of the many considerations involved."
–Barry J. Brinker, Editor, Guide to Cost Management (John Wiley & Sons)

"This book does an excellent job of relating processes to capacity.Managers and executives will better understand that managing the effectiveness and efficiency of processes reduces the amount of capacity required, thus providing an opportunity to reduce costs while improving process quality and reducing process time.It shows the relationship of capacity to demand on downstream processes. It shows that process flexibility reduces required capacity."

Book Description

Soon every business will be Internet enabled and we'll all start dropping the "e" in "e-business." Everything we do is being affected: product creation, customer fulfillment, logistics, planning and, of course, finance. - Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CFO, Nokia
Among CFOs, there's a universal belief that either you can embrace the Internet, or be victimized by it. This is prompting finance functions to examine how they will transform themselves over time. CFOs have to address the short, intermediate, and longer term impact of the Internet on their companies. - Tom Meredith, Managing Director, Dell Ventures and former CFO, Dell Computer Corporation

Undoubtedly e-commerce will have a significant impact on the finance function. Increasing shareholder value in this market means growing the value of your intangibles; at P&G;that includes R&D,;marketing and people. - Clayton Daley, CFO, Procter and Gamble

The Internet will not wait - it's a cultural, not geographical, phenomenon. It requires substantial investment up front to gain scale fast. The opportunity will not last forever. We have to be represented in as many places, with as many products, as quickly as possible... We think our biggest challenge is one of execution in the face of insurmountable opportunity. - Warren Jenson, CFO, Amazon.com

CFOs of leading-edge companies in every industry are transforming themselves into eCFOs -- harnessing the power of the Internet to move beyond ERP, "blow up" their budget processes, apply new valuation techniques, and build new businesses. As traditional accounting functions change or disappear, redefining finance's agenda in an e-business world takes on a new urgency. Each chapter of eCFO: Sustaining Value in the New Corporation is introduced by a leading CFO. They, and the authors at PricewaterhouseCoopers, provide an invaluable guide to leveraging e-businees, offering strategies, tools, action plans and insight.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is this a joke?
Having actually been a CFO, I was excited to learn how I might improve on how I do things, challenge any old thinking I had picked up, etc. However, this book says nothing new. In fact, it says almost nothing at all.

PwC has assembled a collection of jargon and case studies that are so high-level as to be of no use. I give it one star instead of zero because the eCFO checklists at the end of each chapter are, in fact, useful in terms of giving you some things to think about -- but you don't need to buy the whole book just for that. Check it out at the library -- better yet, just make photocopies of the checklists.

Is this book also an indication of what you get by hiring PwC consultants?

1-0 out of 5 stars Anything about nothing & nothing about anything!
For a real CFO, this one is actually too heavy to read through. As for the practician, although graced with beautiful charts and diagrams, it ain't provide any real beef, either. It is a sample of "anything about nothing and nothing about anything". Vague!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
The gang at PricewaterhouseCoopers discusses the chief financial officer's role in the changing corporate landscape. The eCFO is no longer only involved with financial management, but must become an internal venture capitalist, opportunity seeker and risk taker who works closely with the CEO to anticipate trends, recommend new enterprises and manage company investments as a portfolio of financial ventures. The authors draw on in-depth interviews with leading CFOs, case studies, independent research and analysis of the latest best practices. Though charts, bullets and boxes impart a textbook flavor, and the trend material is a little familiar, the book is generally solid and informative. We from getAbstract suggest it to CFOs and CEOs who need that "e" awareness, or to any manager who is trying to drag the boss into the 21st century, or even the 20th.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
As its predecessor, CFO: The Architect of the Corporation's Future, eCFO continues PwC's collection of financial masterpieces.

eCFO provides a major turnaround in the finance function for the
21st century. The new CFO profile will demand a series of capabilities in order to lead companies through the e-world. Technical skills no longer suffice; CFOs are to be great visionaries and good communicators/motivators in their new leadership role.

For example, the new finance function has to take into account that budgets no longer work. They inhibit growth and creativity. I particularly liked a comment that said that budgets are an exercise of how small a company wants to be. Instead, the authors suggest using rolling forecasts as an alternative to foster creativity and at the same time control risks/costs.

I highly recommend this book. This is the third book I buy from PwC's finance team: CFO, eCFO and In Search of Shareholder Value.

5-0 out of 5 stars e is for expanding
Although it contains more than its fair share of populist concepts and views it does provide an excellent insight into the expanding role of the CEO. Particularly useful were the comments of leading CEO's at some of the worlds most dynamic companies. ... Read more
