5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Works: Creating Places Where People Love to Work
Why do employees in top performing organizations always seem to enjoy their work? In her second book Fun Works: Creating Places Where People Love to Work, Leslie Yerkes lays out 11 principles for creating a Fun/Work Fusion in the workplace. She then examines 11 companies, including Southwest Airlines and Harvard University Dining Services, that have successfully applied these principles to merge fun and work. Leslie offers the keys for unlocking each of the 11 principles for making companies happier and healthier. The book includes a Fun/Work Fusion Inventory of behaviors for measuring the extent to which fun has been allowed to enter any workplace. This easy to read book is loaded with nuggets of information designed to help any organization become a more enjoyable, productive and profitable place to work.

5-0 out of 5 stars a resource with built-in return on investment
Seldom do business success narratives warrant a permanent place on a manager's *and* an employee's shelf of resources. This exceptional book repays over and over again the initial investment. Yes, the narratives are inspiring. And, they are packed with all sorts of practical and powerful ideas about how success is supported by the human touch of enjoyment, innovative problem-solving, and the sustenance of people's rich natural capabilities.

What's really wonderful about the stories and advice found in Ms. Yerkes' delightful book is how it all just makes sense. It's not either top-down or bottom-up. Instead, this is a book about people working together. It becomes quite clear to the reader that one reason these companies are successful in conventional bottom-line terms is that they are also successful in top-line, human terms.

That's a radical idea! But there's no hyping of the latest management fashion here. FUN WORKS is a book of research that doesn't read like an academic exercise; a book of stories that doesn't read like self-promotion; and a book of recommendations that doesn't read like the latest commandments dictated on the consultant's way to the bank.

It's the kind of book a manager or employee can dip into long after the first read-through and find something valuable to test that very day.

If you're interested in success as a real human motive and fulfillment, you'll keep this book close at hand. It's radical because it's so darn sensible. As I did, you'll read it quickly because Ms. Yerkes is a terrific writer and she walks her talk, but you won't be filing it away!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow
Though people may say this stuff is full of "soft skills," this book is full of great, practical advice about making your workplace more "user friendly." I hope there are several more in the making, so that we can buy this type of book rather than the endless CEO-in-jail titles now being issued by greedy publishers. When will it end? I guess never, since those creeps will have lots of time behind bars to give us more apologies. I, for one, have had it with them and have told my broker to dump any stock with associations to creeps running WorldCom, ImClone, MarthaStewartLiving, Tyco, RJR Nabisco, Adelphia, ad nauseum. I urge you to do the same. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helped my son get a better job!
I love this book. I had read it myself and when my son lost his job, I gave it to him. He said it really helped him figure out how to use his contacts and do the kind of networking that paid off. Also, I love the way the book is laid out. It's easy to go through and pick out what is particularly relevant to you. Easy reading yet filled with solid information, the kind of help that does pay off. I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading For Those Who Wish to Stay Employed
As a career and life planning coach, I have refered hundreds of clients to the business books written by Baber and Waymon. Make Your Contacts Count is their latest book about building business relationships through strategic networking. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to stay employed and/or maximize his/her professional contributions.

The authors make the important point that building professional relationships can not be left to chance because the quality of our business relationships directly relates to employability, career advancement and overall professional success. The premise of the book is networking efforts must be ongoing and planned, but for many the thought of having to talk with strangers, pitch a product or service, or even answer the envitable "What do you do?" is difficult. This book anticipates people's fears and resistance and helps the reader to explore ways to comfortably begin to increase visability and impact inside and outside their organizations.

The layout of Make Your Contacts Count is engaging and interactive. It is easy to skim and bold faced "tips" highlight many pages. This is a "how-to" style reference book that will stand the test of time, buy it as an investment in your future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get in Contact with Your Future
This book's a "keeper." It's so good, I use it for prizes in my classes--in Marketing, in Teaching Adults, in Information Technology, and in Organization Development/Human Resources. As we change with the business environment this century, people--contacts--are our primary resources, support systems, and the source of much of the value with which we transact.

In Marketing, it crowns the experience I call "The Nifty Business Card Contest" (it's fitting). In Teaching Adults, it conveys the basic skills that should be included in a broad variety of today's--and tomorrow's--learning experiences and in "double loop" learning activities that bring the learner to truly capitalize on experience. In Information Technology, it helps readers extend and make useful their human networks--a skill not much taught in IT courses. Finally, in Organization Development, it provides a big dose of strategies, skills, approaches and techniques that are so important in organizations and for people undergoing change.

Waymon and Baber have obviously recollected their experiences well--and translated them into thoroughly useful words of guidance for readers wanting to begin or to vastly improve their networking activities. They provide examples of what to say in stressful or uncomfortable situations, how to handle a received business card and "trigger" a request for your own, and how to organize and follow up occasions where you meet people.

Perhaps the most useful information relates to how to preplan for situations in which you are to meet people--how to select and to craft your agenda and to work for its fulfillment in the people you meet. It is obvious that the greatest talents in communication and perceptivity are at play here--and those of us whose idea of networking is "Hi! I'll call you sometime" will be greatly appreciative both of the depth this book brings to the process and of the practical guidance and checklists it provides.

It is a credit to the craft of writing the authors have mastered that you can read this book from front to back, back to front, or skip around with equal pleasure and a high degree of derived value. Readers who pick this book up will almost certainly be better networkers when they put it down, whether they read a sentence, a paragraph, a chapter or the entire book. This review would be longer, but I have to go meet a few people now. ... Read more

Unless you're really clueless in the area of social skills, or maybe if you're just really young and haven't lived long enough to learn skills us older folk take for granted, this book would be a waste of your time.I'm amazed intelligent people like Matt Lauer actually have a need for a strategist. For the rest of us, its unlikely you're going to read much of anything that you dont already know.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Positive Reinforcement
This is an exceptionally well-organized and clear book. Superficially, it might seem like "only" a suggestion to compliment others more often. However, what distinguishes it from self-help books that emphasize willpower and attitude is the reliance on the teachings of B.F.Skinner's radical behaviorism.

This is one of the best and few books on applying behaviorism to everyday living that I've aware of. You can read Skinner (e.g. "Science and Human Behavior" or his 3-part autobiography) to understand the scientific foundation of his approach and to get a few ideas how you can manage yourself better, but I have found it difficult to work out just how to apply the lessons of behaviorism in daily life. Advancements have been made in applications to such areas as autism and to education, but these require highly trained behavior analysts.

What Daniels has done is work out and carefully explain a straight-forward way in which anyone can apply behaviorism. His advice seems entirely consistent with Skinner, including the avoidance of punishment. Key basics of behaviorism are made simple by Daniels, who has the clearest explanation of the key behaviorist term "contingency" that I've found.

If he didn't so carefully explain how he arrives at this advice, it might seem simplistic. Just compliment? But significantly more than that, for he identifies a number of rules that must hold to effectively positive reinforce others. And because it doesn't require too many rules, it seems quite manageable. I haven't tried it much yet, but I mean to start doing so soon. I hope to succeed because I'll have the scientific power of behaviorism, the laws of nature and the apparent wisdom of Daniels supporting me and keeping it simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing out the best in others is a worthy endeavor
I don't see why anyone should settle for second best. I read anything and everything on how to be my best and bring out the best in others. I really like the author's perspective of confronting habits. So much of our activity is automatic, based on old coping mechanisms.

This author recognizes that we do have the power to help others be their best and that self-limiting habits need to be conquered. The reader is given a series of steps to take to overcome these habits. Try them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegantly Simple Book that says so much...
This wonderful book puts into layperson's terms the scientific lessons of Behavior Analysis. A must read for anyone who comes into contact with other human beings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the right path in helping yourself!
What a refreshing book! It's not pop psychology, but a book that actually tells you the steps in how to change your behavior and other people's behavior for the better. This scientifically based book is written in layman's terms. Applying the principles of this book DO produce results. There are no secrets, no mystries, but proven scientific information simple for anyone to understand. Our behaviors happen because of consequences, not the other way around. These concepts are taught at University level courses and can be proven. Try something that is proven rather than pop psychology! This book is well worth it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Repackaged Ancient Wisdom
There is an abundance of self-help books on the market. Some have been around for a long time, reissued on a regular basis. Others are new, but deliver the same wisdom in a new package.

Brian Tracy is internationally known for his work as a motivational speaker and sales trainer. He has earned the respect of his colleagues because of his ability to translate the ancient wisdom and obvious truths into forms that help his customers build better lives for themselves. His speeches, seminars, books, tapes, training packages, and more have enabled thousands and thousands of people to improve their lot in life.

This book delivers that proven wisdom-and some thought-provoking ideas-in a short-burst format. Readers will find a lot of old material here-seasoned material handed down through the ages. Before you discount it, remember that we all forget that advice-no matter how simple or obvious-that we don't review frequently. A spin through this book will stimulate some old memories that may inspire you to do something new and different to make some changes in your life.

Don't expect the lightning bolt of dramatically new material. It's not here...and you probably don't need it. You still have plenty of room to grow from application of the advice you've heard before but haven't acted on.

This is the kind of book that makes great reading for the airplane or the bathroom. Short explanations-easy to read a little, then put the book down to pick up again later. Why not put it on your bedside table to read-and think about-one piece of wisdom as you drift off to sleep.

There are exercises in the book to guide you in some applications, but you can create these practice sessions on your own. Accept this book as a compilation of well-known stories, advice, and inspirational vignettes and apply the content in your own life. Reading Brian Tracy's latest will not change your life. Applying what you read, however, could have a profound effect.

My rating is based on this book providing a good collection of nuggets of wisdom, not on any expectation that the book would be something new and different. If you feel you could benefit from a good dose of the insight that's helped thousands of people through the ages, this book will meet that need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reminder, Powerful Motivator
In recent years, Tracy has written a series of self-help and
motivational books based on his life-time of helping
individuals and businesses to achieve goals and improve
results. In my opinion, this is the best of the group. (One
of his earlier books, "Create Your Own Future," is also
excellent.)

The central theme is that over time, "we usually get what we
think about most." While many things factor into our success,
one of the most critical is the accuracy and power of our

thinking. In general, if we think clearly, we tend to get
better results. If we are optimistic, creative, determined,
resourceful and strategic in our thinking, we will achieve
more and better results than if we are negative, fuzzy and
confused. That seems obvious.

But too often, we forget the obvious. We allow our thinking
to focus on daily annoyances, or petty distractions, or the
latest fad. We get confused by the news, or lose our
confidence when we are criticized or experience a temporary
set-back.

Here are two key points from the book:

A) If we don't take charge of our thinking, other people and
events surely will.

Every day, advertisers spend a fortune to focus our attention
on their products. News organizations are determined to get
us to think about the latest disaster, tax increase or virus.
People around us want us to focus on THEM and THEIR problems,
rather than our own goals and priorities.

B) Your future will reflect your dominant thoughts.

Your energy level, your self-discipline and self-confidence,
your ambition and your optimism are the raw materials with
which you will build your future, and your thoughts,
attitudes and expectations largely determine your daily
actions.

And here's a suggestion of my own: Once is not enough! Most
of us have read a motivational or self-help book in the past.
We've listened to audio programs and we "know this stuff."
That's great! But it's not enough! We are bombarded with

thousands and thousands of negative messages every day.

To stay positive and motivated, to stay focused and
optimistic and ambitious, make sure you add at least a few
minutes of positive reminders to the mix - every single day!
Read every day! Listen to tapes, every day!

This is not a profound book, and there is little that is
truly "new" in it. (Oh, how we love anything that is "new and
improved!") It is merely a wonderful book that you should
read and re-read every year or so, in regular rotation with a
handful of other favorites. Buy, read and enjoy this book.

You may find it at your local bookstore, or you can get it at
Amazon. This is NOT a book to borrow from the library, skim
quickly and return. This is a book to read, and read again.
If you are serious about your future, this is one of the
books you should own and read over the years until it is dog-
eared and falls apart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can you really change your life by changing your thinking?
The late great Earl Nightengale was famous for saying "You become what you think about." In the bible it says; "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." So how important is thinking? It determines your outcome. Change your thinking and you will change your life and let Brian Tracy show you how.

Great book. MAybe his best.

1-0 out of 5 stars Same old stuff with a new wrapper
I've read a few of Brian Tracy's books and if you read one, you read them all. He seems to use the same techniques over and over again and just re-names his book. I guess when you have 87 books and audio programs on Amazon alone your bound to repeat yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another amazing book by Brian
Brian never ceases to amaze me with his collections. If you have never read a Brian Tracy book, you are missing out. I have read a lot of books from speakers and authors like Brian, but none have the abililty to deliver the impactful content like Brian. He gets rid of the fluff and tells you exactly what you need to do. Since reading Change Your Thinking...I have already come up with several ideas that have turned my business and life around. Thanks Brian- i wish i could find a way to thank you! YOu are a life saver! ... Read more

Book Description

THE SPIRITUALITY OF SUCCESS
Getting Rich With Integrity

"I hated myself and dreaded what I represented and had become. What a loser. But the path takes time to develop. Don't judge a person by the moment they're in - their life isn't over. I don't feel sympathy or the need to judge others. It's our destination that counts. One of the best things, for me, was to become an addict. At the time I was in it I was in Hell, but who I am today is partially based on being who I was. Out of the process, I became this new person. Would you rather attain success and skip the process of the pain, sure, but if you like the result now, you can't deny the path. There are reasons why we go through what we do." - Vincent Roazzi

Vincent Roazzi is not your everyday success story. Before he started accumulating a net worth in the millions and gaining a reputation as a top-notch sales trainer, he grew up in Brooklyn as a car-stealing gang member. He was a product of his environment in the rough and tough Fort Greene section. He went to school, but never got better than a C in an English course. His dead-end beginning goes from bad to worse, with a once-in-a lifetime shot at redemption.

After spending ten years to build up several family-owned businesses and not believing there was anything left to conquer, he self -destructed. At age 32 he was a cokehead. But it took a few years to catch up to him. He was a burned out gambler. His marriage (and five kids) was on the rocks. He eventually lost his business, went broke, and went on welfare. By age 36 he entered rehab, or else, as he puts it, "I would have utilized the only other option left to me -- to take my life."

His recovery odyssey would take him to a construction company where he enjoyed the refuge of manual labor. He was able to turn the corner when hitting 40, going back to a life of sales by working for Cornerstone. He rose up the ladder quickly, becoming their Executive Vice President. But it's Roazzi's candid reflection on his fall and rise that make his new book, THE SPIRTUALITY OF SUCCESS, a rather uniquely appreciated volume on what it truly takes to be successful in life and in business.

THE SPIRITUALITY OF SUCCESS is broken into 35 small chapters that are intended to be absorbed one chapter per day, so by month's end you will have absorbed the universal laws of success. He demonstrates how success is a science and details his ideas with proven examples. He dispels many popular myths or misconceptions about achieving and redefines what success is all about from a spiritual and scientific approach. "The main theme," says Roazzi, "explores why authentic personal financial freedom is more a result of who you are than what you do. This leads to the realization that success is not a condition of life, but a state of mind, a state of being."

Roazzi exposes the truths and fallacies of today's popular success formulas, highlighting the scientific principles behind many achievement techniques, such as visualization, focus, and positive thinking. The book is sprinkled with his one-line nuggets of wisdom, such as:

·People are so busy trying to create reality that reality passes them by.
·You can change your life, and its outcome; by changing what you "know." Unfortunately, many people go through life never questioning what they think they know.
·Those who are successful see things differently. They create their own reality.
·Success is only possible through other people. You cannot be successful by yourself.
·As you perceive, so shall you achieve.

"Once you know who you are as a person and no longer feel you have to prove anything to anyone - or be a victim of the conditioning society imposes upon you - once that is taken care of, then you can discover who you are," advises Roazzi. "I get great pleasure in helping people now and it just so happens I have the gift to do that. If I deny who and why I am, then I experience a different reality. It's i ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Integrity is the Key word in this Title
I have read many personal development books on the subject of Success and this one sums it all up for you. Vinny is an excellent author who has taken the time to make this book an enjoyable read. The chapters are short and too the point and he gets the message home. So far this book has changed my life for the better. Reading it gave me the courage to make some drastic changes in my life and I am forever indebted to him.

5-0 out of 5 stars rich and integrity in the same title? is it possible?
I didn't know what to think when i picked up this book. i was intrigued by the title of it. i found that the most difficult part of finding success in my career is how to balance a spiritual life with a lucrative life. Vincent uses the basic laws of the universe to explain the science of success. Some of the principles are drawn from the avedic traditions and others are modern ideas about business and money. the two come together to analyze how success works in the modern day business world. He also incorporates newtonian principles and a little physics lesson to further his points scientifically. I've read many success books and this one goes beyond any of them, into the realm of the spiritual and scientific worlds. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in why people become successful as well as anyone who is interested in bringing their spiritual ideals into the business of making money. buy it, it's worth more than its cover price.

5-0 out of 5 stars a life-changer!
I'm very selective about what I read and not easily impressed. When I heard Vinny on NPR I knew I had to buy this book. I have recommended it numerous times already as one of the most important and helpful books I have ever read. This book shows how to be a successful person - not just businessman. It's principles are simple and timeless - and what is particularly great - really gleaned from what the author learned in recovery (a 12-step program). A reviewer said it was a good book, but without much practical help. That couldn't be further from the truth. This book was worth a $1000. seminar. It guided me and motivated me, and truly saved me when everything in my life was changing - including work. Thank you Vinny! You're da man!

5-0 out of 5 stars More than chicken soup for the soul
To say that Spirituality of Success is chicken soup for the soul would be too cliche`, yet that's exactly what it is. If you're willing to be brutally honest with yourself, I'd recommend Roazzi's book because it can make an improvement in your life as it did in mine. All my friends to whom I've recommended it have thanked me. One of the encouraging things I learned from reading this book is that if you're one of those people who have always felt like the "odd man/woman out", take heart. We're the ones who are right! The rest of the world is screwed up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Investment I Could Have Made
A few months ago I turned 20 years old. I really began to examine my life under a microscope, and I was pleased. As a child I always pictured myself being alot further in life then I was. I could not figure out what was preventing me from accomplishing the success I seek. I thought I was doing everything right, building and expanding my business, going to college full time, investing, going to personal and business development seminars and much more. No matter how hard I worked, I still felt as if my accomplishments were minimal.
I finally came across one of my best investment opportunities, and of all things it was a book. It was the smallest and best investment I ever made. Within my first night of reading "Spirituality of Success" I realized what I was doing wrong. After all of my efforts I over looked a simple key element, the formula for success. Author Vincent Roazzi sums up this formula in an exceptional, up-lifting manner... I spent on this book it thought me everything I was missing in business, life and myself. What you will get out of this book is priceless. Learn how to make better decisions, increase efficiency and most of all learn the formula to success. ... Read more

Focal Point is author and motivational speaker Brian Tracy's latest guide to professional and personal development. Combining the basic principles of career success and life balance he has advocated in the past with anecdotes for inspiration, the book proposes a unified approach to simultaneously achieving improvement at work and at home. The crux is finding the "focal point" in all pertinent areas--business, family, finances, health--and then launching a seven-step "personal strategic plan" that "helps you identify exactly what is most important to you ... identify what you need to do to achieve your most important goals (and) determine the steps you have to take to get from wherever you are to wherever you want to go." Tracy shows quite explicitly how to incorporate the specific phases of the process, including Values, Vision, Goals, Knowledge and Skills, Habits, Daily Activities, and Actions, into a drive for long-term growth and overall advancement. Not all who follow Tracy's program will find their incomes doubled and work hours pared while their personal relationships blossom, of course, but anyone who applies it diligently should see definite improvement. --Howard Rothman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tracy's Magnum Opus
This is undoubtably Brian Tracy's best work to date, his magnum opus. In this great book, Brian Tracy shows you how to concentrate (focus) on what is most important and achieve your goals.

With so many things to do, how do you determine where to concentrate your efforts? Brian explains how.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but not as outstanding as some of his other work
This is the second Brian Tracy book I ever read. The first one is "Victory! Applying the proven principles of military strategy to achieve greater success in your business and personal life". I love that coz it's clever use of real war stories did help me much to remember the lessons/principles Tracy wanna teach. Dont know whether that made me expect too much or what. Though this book also carries sound theories about how focusing or concentrating your mind and effort can improve myself in different arenas of life, I just forgot them real fast. I got to refer to it always, making use of the suggested steps or questions under various circumstances. You can say that's characteristic of a good "how to" book. I did expect more and better from the same brilliant speaker/author.

In short, a good book but there are better work from Tracy, like the one I mentioned above.

p.s. I like the following exercise in pg 128 very much.

Sit down with your loved ones and ask them these four questions.
1. Is there anything I am doing today that you would like me to do more of?
2. Is there anything I am doing that you would like me to do less of?
3. Is there anything I am not doing that you would like me to start doing from now on?
4. Is there anything I am doing that you would like me to stop doing?

5-0 out of 5 stars Brian Tracy's best work to date
I have many of Brian Tracy's books and audio programs. And while everything Tracy does is excellent, Focal Point, is in my opinion, his best work. It is Brian Tracy's magnum opus---Focal Point has had the greatest impact in my personal and professional life. I Focal Point, Tracy shows you to identify what your focal point is in each area of your life and then asks you to direct all of your energies with laser like focus. Focus is like a laser beam. Just like a laser beam can cut through steel when properly focused and directed, focus as descibed in Focal Point can help you cut throughbarriers that have been holding you back to achieving your goals.I have a lot of books that I have read and given away. I keep all of Brian Tracy's book and Focal Point is one that I refer to again and again.Good, no, excellent work Mr. Tracy!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on focus that I have ever read!
Brian Tracy is one of this country's leading authorities on personal and professional growth, and he proves that in Focal Point. Here Tracy gives you a real plan for clarifying what matters in your life then maximizing your potential in those important areas. If you are not a high achiever, this work will help you become one. If you are a high achiever, the book will undoubtedly give you very practical tools for kicking it up a notch.Amacon you've got a winner in this one. Congratulations to all involved in this project!

5-0 out of 5 stars Important System
I read this book almost a year ago and I am happy to say that I am still using many parts of Mr. Tracy's system for productivity.

Although the reading was sometimes a little "dry" I gave this book 5 stars because it is a very comprehensive manual for effective achievement. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Invaluable Tool
My first interaction with this text was in 2000 attending Prof. Northcraft's class at the University of Illinois. This was easily the most influential class I experienced as a graduate student, thus I am obviously a little biased as a reviewer. However, now as a member of "Corporate America" I have recently revisited it, and have found the knowledge contained within to be indespensible to my current work. In a very easy-to-read and concise manner Prof. Northcraft gets to the heart of what one needs to succeed in negotiation. The discussion takes you beyond broad-brush theory and focuses on some concrete strategies that can elevate your skill as a negotiator.

My only complaint is the title. This book can help the reader with much more than negotiating a jucier bonus. Anyone looking to improve their negotiation skill for any purpose can learn plenty from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Content & Practical Advice
Great Book! An easy to read book that provides very practical advice for negotiating compensation. Instead of relying on the same old stuff, this book provides information that was proven to be effective. It also incorporates the feedback of an advisory panel of recruiters who deal with these issues everyday. The common misconceptions and pitfalls information was very valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for all seeking new jobs!
This is a must-read for anyone looking for a job or seeking to make the money they deserve in the job they already have. Northcraft and Pinkley are smart, down-to-earth negotiators who show you how you can do your best to negotiate the best salary you can get. Those out of work will gain strength and self-pride from this book, despite their situation -- perhaps the most important help the book offers, in the end!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Know The Professor
I know Prof. Northcraft, and I took his course here at University of Illinois. It was WELL WORTH it, as much as the book was too!

I respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer that claimed the book was written by academics with "no negotiating experience." Prof. Northcraft has completed negotiation processes for many small to large corporations, including Disney and many others.

The book is concise, yet practical. The book makes great headway in setting the reader on a pathway to becoming a good negotiator, as much as, if not better than a speech communication book makes a person a good communicator. The reader has to apply and practice the concepts for the skills to become most effective.

A must buy for college grads!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply useful
As a professor in a business school, I am often asked for negotiating advice from students. This book will make my life easier as I will keep a couple of copies on the shelf and direct the students to invest in their own copy. The strength of this book is that it is well written, easy to read, and distills a lot of what we know about negotiations down to easy to follow steps. The authors should be commended for writing a book that is simply useful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Biggs-A Winner!
I've read Dick Biggs' other books, heard him talk, and witnessed the positive change and growth in people from the mentoring program he developed. BURN BRIGHTLY WITHOUT BURNING OUT is his best work. If you like Stephen Covey, Norman Vincent Peale, John Maxwell or Ken Blanchard, this book should appeal to you because it packs powerful but simple ideas of living a better life.

The author uses good illustrative examples in his twenty short and compact chapters that serve as stepping stones in a stairway to happiness and fulfillment in your life. Its messages have solid moral foundations, The book's subtitle, Balancing the Work You Need with the Life You Lead, is a theme carried throughout this fine work, with appeal for adult readers of all ages.

I've given copies of this book to a niece working towards a medical degree, a retired senior military officer friend starting a new executive career and a brother rebuilding his life, in addition to my three grown children.

The book is an easy read, however, its worthy of highlighting and reading again for reinforcement and to pick up additional insights. The book covers a lot of ground in less than 150 short pages and lives up to its title. It's a winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK FOR LIFE
They say in five years, you will become the average of the books you have read and the people you have associated with. For two-and-a-half years, I've had the privelege of associating with Dick Biggs as a professional speaker--and now I've been able to read his book. Both have become indispensible resources for me.

Dick is respected among professional speakers for being a man who walks his talk. Reading his latest book, BURN BRIGHTLY WITHOUT BURNING OUT, is almost as good as knowing the man--it will provide very practical assistance if you want to achieve great things in your professional life while building balance into your personal life.

Are you a reader? Then you'll really enjoy this book. Are you working on developing the reading habit? Then this book will get you hooked. If Amazon allowed a SIX-star review, this one would get SEVEN!

5-0 out of 5 stars Leadership Text/
Dick Biggs' book has something for all of us, from leaders in our military, to industry, and our society. Every parent should have this book because it lays out what is important in life, read relationships, and how to achieve same. We are the leaders of our children, and Dick makes very stronge leadership points. This book is divided into twenty contrasts of life, twenty short chapters loaded with idea, thoughts, and recomendations that we need to study and commit upon. The first chapter, Image and Integrity, is the perfect start. Without integrity we don't amount to much, but too many of us today are only concerned with image. In this chapter, "grit" is found in the word integrity. This book is small, 5 X 7.5 inches, and the chapters are 4 to six pages that makes for handy reading. Read a chapter with your morning coffee, while waiting for the rest of the members to arrive at a meeting, and at other times when you have ten minutes for good thoughs about where you are going. Most importantly, if you take this work seriously, you can determine who you really are and how others know you. We all need to think about Richard Biggs' words, they will help us and our society. This is a great gift for those people you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Life Changing
A friend chose this book and left it at my house. I ran out of books for the moment and picked it up thinking it was another one of those...
How absolutely overwhelmed I was at my age (73) to learn so much in so few pages. Much of what he has said to help guide people to a fuller, richer life, I had already learned and applied, but none of us have ever reached the point we can't learn or see something a bit differently.

My life changed drastically when health dictated this master workaholic was ordered to shut down her thriving business overnight or else...For 2 years I have been under recontruction to learn to be at peace in every situation. I can see, however, how to start over again now that my health is back and the doors are slowly opening to be useful again to myself and the Lord but this time I am going to keep this book right along with my Bible so I will put into practice the principles Richard K. Biggs has put forth. For whatever years I have left I intend to do it right and be a blessing to all I meet because of these excellent guidelines.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Burning Brightly without Burning Out"
"Burning Brightly without Burning Out" is a breath of fresh air to those pressed by the demands of life. Besides being easy to read, the content is straightforward and potent. With so many voices calling for our attention, it's wonderful to have some basic principles by which to evaluate our commitments. Bigg's solid foundation gives his life direction and purpose. Instead of trying to do it "all" half-heartedly, Biggs has discovered the secret of doing a few priorities well. Thanks for the lessons well-learned! ... Read more

If you want to be lucky, throw away that lottery ticket. How to Make Luck by Marc Myers lets you in on seven secrets of successful and lucky people, from former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and the Today Show's Matt Lauer to money manager James O'Shaughnessy and poker champion Barbara Enright. Myers believes that people make their own luck. "The people we think of as lucky behave in ways that are so special and seductive that nearly everyone they meet feels compelled to offer them great opportunities. And it is this wealth of opportunities that allows them to continuously improve their good luck," he writes. Luck, advises Myers, means mastering one or two of these lucky behaviors: Make life look easy, but don't rub it in; make yourself appealing; be as curious as a child; improve the lives of other people; let power brokers own a piece of you; don't burn your bridges. The book includes chapters on each of these secrets as well as interviews with successful people and tips for limiting bad luck. Myers is a fortunate person himself, having risen quickly at the New York Times, Adweek and elsewhere. He is now editor of two national consumer newsletters, Bottom Line/Personal and Moneysworth. The book could be a lucky charm for anyone looking to get ahead, in business and in life. --Dan Ring ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A practical and useful book
This book is great. The title can be a little misleading. The book is about behaviors you can adopt to influence things to go the way you want them to. It's not a new age hocus pocus book. It is a real world street smart book on a variety of ways to influence people and situations to go well for you. There are a lot of suggestions on improving your luck in addition to the seven main methods that the author lists in the table of contents. Some of it is commonsense, but sometimes we need a reminder. Some of the advice is immeadiately applicable. Get this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars What Luck?
Labor Under Correct Knowledge (LUCK) the book dispels myths and is very well written. You will be very luck to have read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book since How to Win Friends $ Influence People!
There are a lot of self-help books out there, and many of them just saying the same boring thing. This book, however, is really smart and practical. It should rank up there with Napolean Hill and Dale Carnegie as a classic book on creating success. I felt his strategies were very realistic, made a lot of sense, and are doable! Easy to read and very enjoyable. I'd definitely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of great street smarts in this book
There are lots and lots of self-help books dealing with salesmanship, business success and the like but this is the best because Marc seems to be able to interact with numerous successful people and looks for ways that people can increase their odds for success instead of blaming things that they feel they cannot control.

Way too many books are from the psychological point of view and lack real-world focus. This book is written from the success businessman's point of view and contains immense real world focus. That is very refreshing if you know what I mean! I plan to review this book twice a month for its meaning and look forward to the next book. Hopefully, this book will be on tape or maybe Marc Myers will speak a seminar in the Bay Area sometime.

Get it and you will not regret it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Luck doesn't just happen--you make it happen
It's easy to credit the success of others to luck--just happening to be at the right place at the right time. Not so, says author Marc Myers. Successful people make their own luck, the author says, and he cites case studies to prove his point. What we see as luck is usually the product of lots of hard work, and a willing to take some chances. (I personally know how hard at least one of his subjects worked--which, to me, proves the author's thesis). Certainly worth reading for anyone who wants some clues on what "luck" is all about--and about how the harder you work, the luckier you are apt to be. ... Read more

Book Description

Humans are creatures of habit. We continue to do things the same way because we are comfortable in our habits and don’t consider that there are other possibilities.I’m Stuck, You’re Stuckoffers a self-discovery tool that has helped more than 30 million people understand why they do the things they do, and how to do them differently. This tool is DiSC and it takes less than five minutes to complete, but offers lessons in human relations you can use for a lifetime.

While most business self-help books are based on the theories or experiences of one person, I’m Stuck, You’re Stuck is based on DiSC, a time-tested self-assessment program developed by Inscape Publishing nearly 25 years ago and backed by their ongoing behavioral research.DiSC has been successfully used by over 30 million people in the global workforce. But it’s not a “one size fits all” training solution, or another inspirational, feel-good formula. DiSC is a hands-on, practical approach to discovering and capitalizing on individual differences.DiSC puts the responsibility for understanding and managing our behavior on the individual. This is the first time Inscape’s DiSC assessment has been available outside the training and development market. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Seems to Be Far Afield from true DISC Unified Theory
While a complete well-grounded book for the public on the DISC dimensions of behavior is critically needed, Mr. Ritchey seems to have attempted to create an entirely new DISC self-assessment tool that is not based on the original framework of Marston, Jung, Cleaver, Hendrickson, and certainly not Geier who developed the DISC profile Ritchey purportedly has used for years. A publication for the masses who have been exposed to DISC behavior concepts, assessments, profiles, "tests", and tools is sorely needed. This book adds not to clarity, but to the confusion of the users of DISC tools for personal and professional growth. DISC conceptually is a strong assessment in today's marketplace. Used correctly a DISC Profile will create "miracles." Not only is the book gravely inaccurate and misleading in places (specifically the history section), it provides "tests" for the public that are invalid, unreliable, and inaccurate. I was very disappointed in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding explanation of DiSC® Theory
This book brings DiSC to life, and makes it understandable. It contains a detailed description of the various behavioral style combinations that are possible, and does a good job of explaining them in simple language, without much of the technical jargon that can sometimes accompany assessment tools.

The book includes a DiSC assessment tool, which is somewhat different than what is available commercially, but seemed accurate when I compared my results vs. other versions.

I've used DiSC® with several clients of mine. We usually spend class time explaining DiSC® and the theories behind it. This book could be easily used as pre-work to save class time during any training or consulting intervention involving behaviors, conflict, communication, team-building, management or leadership development.

I found this book light reading with virtually every sentence applicable to the real world. If you are an HRD, Training, Business or Personal Coach or Consulting Professional, you need this book in your toolkit!

I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars About Zig Ziglar
Before i start, id just like to mention that most of zig ziglars audios are very similar, they all have the same message, i heard Zig ziglar live in June, and i knew exactly what he was going to say, It seems to me that, zig has not changed his material over the many years he has been at the top, this audio recording is ok, but if you really want a good book, or audio by Zig Ziglar ' Over the Top is the one to buy, they all talk about motivation, and as zig says, you have to get rid of that stinkin thinkin, you have to become a meaningful specific. You only need ONE SUCCESS AUDIO, DONT FORGET ZIG IS A SALES MAN, SO DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY, TO BE SUCCESSFUL YOU HAVE TO HAVE A POSITVE ATTIDUDE, COMMITMENT, AND DONT WASTE TIME AS TIME IS OUR BEST RESOURCE. ANOTHER THING, JIM ROHN IS VERY GOOD I HIGHLY RECOMEND HIM

Book Description

Those who succeed in business do so by knowing how to adapt and change along with the changing landscape of corporate life.

As you probably already know, business has evolved past the cutthroat tactics that once ruled the day.The kinder and gentler business world of today brings manners, ethics, and corporate responsibility into the workplace. The current problem is knowing how to survive and thrive in this new climate.

This book goes where no book has gone before—it links business success directly to good manners.Mary Mitchell knows and shows that what is best for any business situation is that all parties are treated with respect. This isn’t as easy to pull off as it sounds since we are all connected 24/7.It’s hard to know where the business day ends (or if it even does).Likewise business gatherings have moved from formal dining to all types of social situations from buffets to lunch at the gym after a game of handball. This means that we must be on our best behavior for every type of business situation (in and out of the office) while maintaining a professional sensibility.

With a copy of Class Acts as your guide, you will develop the mindset for civility in the workplace along with the mechanics to carry it through by learning:

· Personal accountability
· The value of forgiving, apologizing, and telling the truth
· Meeting conduct (both as an attendee and the leader)
· How to celebrate special occasions in a multicultural workplace
· Maintaining humanity in cyberspace
· That visualization and meditation enhance focus and civility
· Ways of disagreeing without being disagreeable
· That good relationships lead to good business which leads to success

Mary Mitchell is president of The Mitchell Organization, a Philadelphia-based training and consulting firm.Client service, business and personal etiquette, presentation and negotiation skills programs are custom designed and provided for top national and international corporations and professional organizations. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not only for Businessmen
Mary Mitchell has written a stunningly clear, well thought-out, and concise book. Her background in etiquette, coupled with years of work in the field of corporate governance place her in the unique position of being able to match business accountability with manners at a time when both assets are sadly on the decline. Not only are her points well taken, but the book is well-written and entertaining. The suggestions and advice contained in this book are indispensable for just about anybody interacting with anyone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect gift
Mary Mitchell's Class Acts is filled with good information, overlaid with a gentle philosophy, and is a good read to boot. It's the only etiquette book I've read cover to cover. It makes a perfect gift -- a lovely compliment to colleagues, clients and friends who are indeed class acts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Establishing of a good and profitable business climate
Class Acts by business etiquette authority and consultant Mary Mitchell is a straightforward, "reader friendly" guide to using good manners, etiquette, and positive relationships to improve business efficiency, profitability, and the lowering of daily stress levels while on the job. From the importance of accountability, forgiveness, and trustworthiness; to improving communication skills; to handling disagreement in the most effective manner (always disagree in private if possible, and carefully watch one's tone of voice while disapproving); to coping with the challenges of cyberspace; to knowing better than to pursue a workplace romance (or if one must, to pursue it with caution and close awareness of the other party's feelings), Class Acts emphasizes that it is the creation of good and enduring relationships which, in the end, are fundamental to the establishing of a good and profitable business climate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Class Acts -- A Boardroom to Bedroom Must Read
Class Acts is an essential book for today's personal and professional environment. The strength of the book comes from it's applicability to one's life lived in a 24/7 world. The lines between professional acts and personal acts are less clearly defined as one realizes that a "whole life" standard to behavior is the only way to conduct oneself. It is precisely this understanding of all "actions" and their impact on daily life, both on the individual and organizational level, that makes this book a boardroom to bedroom must read.

As the CEO of ULiveandLearn, an educational company, we have been involved in developing programs that offer training and continuing education programs. Often, the benchmark programs are the ones that ignite support across a broad group of users, from corporate managers to educators to community-based organizations.

We are looking forward to helping bring Class Acts live through programs that integrate the essentials of the book with case studies and programs for corporations and organizations.

The opportunity to create and sustain an environment of good manners, good relationships and good business benefits us all. Mary Mitchell clearly understands the power of her message and it's long reaching effects on everyone who cares enough to be a Class Act.

5-0 out of 5 stars Long Overdue!
At last, someone who "gets it!" Mary Mitchell eloquently makes the case that respectful, ethical, balanced business conduct is not simply "do-gooder" window-dressing but an issue that strikes deep at the bottom line -- via the relationships created with employees, employers, customers, vendors, colleagues and, oh yes, investors. Take THAT, Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossing, Adelphia, and all the rest! This should be required reading for everyone in business. ... Read more
