Did you ever have a great boss? Everyone should have one, but not enough people do. If you're a boss, or hope to become one, or have a less-than-great boss, then this is the book that could change your career-and your life.

In times like these, being a great boss can be harder than ever. If you want surprising and useful advice on how to handle the tough stuff -- from having to fire a long-time employee to being a new boss with a demoralized team -- the stories, observations, and advice contained in this gem of a book will set your feet in the right direction. And if you just want advice on living up to the legend who preceded you in the job, or even ways to emulate someone who was a great boss to you, Jeffrey Fox has gathered anecdotes from some of the mightiest and most respected bosses in America. The bestselling author who brought you How to Become CEO and How to Become a Rainmaker knows the territory about which he speaks.

Fox is the master of the counterintuitive angle. For every boss who has implied "I know what's best, that's why I'm the boss," Fox counsels, "Listen to Phonies, Fools, and Frauds" and "Don't Check Expense Accounts." His stories from bosses who have cared equally for employees' lives and the bottom line will inspire you to see that profit counts, but so do camaraderie, motivation, and a great place to work.

In a time of considerable corporate downsizing, it's more important than ever for bosses to surround themselves with motivated employees. Jeffrey Fox's newest volume will have a place on the shelves of top brass everywhere who want to remain leaders of their pack. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of useful ideas for any work setting
Recently, I read HOW TO BECOME A RAINMAKER: THE RULES
FOR GETTING AND KEEPING CUSTOMERS AND CLIENTS by
Jeffrey J. Fox . . . it was one of the best business books that I have come across in a long time.

So when I came across an earlier book by Fox--HOW TO BECOME
A GREAT BOSS: THE RULES FOR GETTING AND KEEPING THE
BEST EMPLOYEES--I just had to get hold of it . . . and I did, getting the chance to listen to the taped version . . . I'm glad I did, too; it's another winner!

Fox presents nothing brilliantly new, but he writes in a clear and readable fashion . . . in doing so, he presents lots of ideas that you can immediately apply to almost any management
situation . . . he also makes it clear that management involves
just about anything that we do, and a result, we should perhaps
think of many folks as "managers" that might not ordinarily
fit into that category (I'm thinking parents here, for example).

In particular, I liked his following "Great Boss Simple Success
Formula":
1. Only hire top-notch, excellent people.
2. Put the right people in the right job. Weed out the wrong people.
3. Tell the people what needs to be done.
4. Tell the people why it is needed.
5. Leave the job up to the people you've chosen to do it.
6. Train the people.
7. Listen to the people.
8. Remove frustration and barriers that fetter the people.
9. Inspect progress.
10. Say "Thank you" publicly and privately.

4-0 out of 5 stars Advice with attitude
Jeff Fox writes his chapters short and sweet, just how I like them. No drawn out, boring examples, just "in your face" advice that you should know.

The draw back to this book is that it's mostly things I've read elsewhere. The advantage is that Fox says it more succinctly than others, so for the time-challenged, that is a nice perk.

If you've already read dozens of books on management, you may not need to pick this up. If you're a new boss or having trouble with employees, this is probably a worthwhile read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the least bit helpful
I normally don't write reviews but I just read this book and I couldn't believe how much of a waste of money it was. Here's the book in a nutshell- Hire good employees and fire bad ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and right on target
Simple and right on target. This book gives great tips and suggestions for improving your supervisorial skills. Written in short, thoughtful, digestable chapters, this book is a must have for anyone who supervises others and want to be better at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Puts things into perspective
"How to Become a Great Boss" is simple to read and allows you to formalize what you might already know. Many of the ideas/suggestions are instinctual characteristics of a good manager that Fox puts into words for all to understand.

Very straight-forward tips. When finished reading the short chapters you get the message and have an idea on how to apply in real life.

One of the best books I have read since becoming a Manager. Cuts through the BS and gives you direct advice. ... Read more

Book Description

From the former F-15 fighter pilot and CEO of one of
Inc.'s 500 fastest-growing companies: a
hard-hitting primer on performance excellence
in the workplace -- military style

According to former U.S. Air Force pilot-turned-management guru James D. Murphy, businesses need to take a lesson from the American military's fighter pilots. While F-15s, F-16s, and F/A-18s are the ultimate aerial combat machines, they are entirely dependent on the men and women who fly and maintain them. At Mach 2, the instrument panel is screaming out information, the horizon is a blur, the wingman is occupied, the pilot's busy, the jet is hanging on the edge -- and yet fighter pilots routinely handle the stress. It's not much different in today's fast-paced, unforgiving world of business. One slipup and the company is bankrupt before the employees know what hit them.

What works on the squadron level for F-15 pilots will also work for your marketing team, sales force, or research and development group. By analyzing the work environment and attacking its centers of gravity in parallel, you'll begin to utilize the Plan-Brief-Execute-Debrief-Win cycle that makes up Flawless Execution. The result will make a rapid impact on your business's future success. Developed over the course of nearly fifty years, the rigorous practice of Flawless Execution has helped U.S. fighter squadrons reduce their mistake rate, cut casualties and losses of equipment, and rack up an envious victory record. Through Afterburner's multimedia seminars conducted by "Murph" and his fellow pilots-turned-businesspeople, businesses have benefited by adopting the techniques, systems and strategies of America's Top Guns. Now, with Flawless Execution, you can too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pray this guy is never your competitor
Frank, practical advice with a no nonsense approach...just like you'd expect from guys that operate in a space where coming in second isn't an option.

This is a no BS look at how to improve any organization's ability to kick the competition's butt. You won't find "theoretical" discussions from a group of "academics." No charts and graphs. No fancy formulas. Just dozens of ideas that anyone with a desire to improve can implement. The "debrief" section and advice Murph provides has literally changed the way we operate in our company.

Read it...and you'll understand why the USAF is the best in the world. More importantly, you'll see how their training methods can make you better.I couldn't recommend it more highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Business Book I've Read!!!!
Just finished Business School and I think Flawless Execution should have been required reading! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and will make sure it is a part of every organization I work with in the future. ... Read more

Book Description

Author of the Business Week million-copy bestseller, 1001 Ways to Reward Employees, Bob Nelson is the motivational specialist who helps businesses stay competitive by teaching them how to inspire their employees to excel. Now joined by Dr. Dean Spitzer, senior consultant and performance improvement expert for IBM, Nelson distills the knowledge, experience, and ideas gained from working with thousands of organizations into a hands-on, practical fieldbook.

Beginning with the basics of motivation, including the decline of traditional incentives and the trend toward empowered employees, the book lays the groundwork for developing and managing a rewards or recognition program in any work situation: how to recognize an individual or a group; how to develop a low-cost recognition program; how to sell it to upper management, prevent and fix common problems, and assess its effectiveness. There are planning worksheets, templates for different purposes-improving morale, improving attendance, increasing retention-plus perforated reference cards for immediate guidance, and 101 new low-cost/no-cost recognition ideas. Running through the margins are Nelson's answers to the questions most frequently asked since the publication of 1001 Ways to Reward Employees. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a treasure!
Motivation of employees through rewards and recognition is critically important for organizational success. This topic is vital for supervisors, managers, executives, human resource professionals, business owners...the list goes on. Your power in this essential part of business is based on how much you know about what works, what doesn't work, and why. The more examples you can glean about what others are doing, the stronger you will be.

Nelson and Spitzer are internationally known experts in rewards and recognition. They both know their topic extremely well, and that high level of expertise comes out in this book. Readers familiar with the field will think they already have the answers if they have previous books written by these authors. Guess again!

This book is packed with information, insights, tips, ideas, case studies-you name it. Have you ever packed a suitcase so full that it was almost impossible to close it? That's the experience you'll have with this field book. You'll wonder how these gurus ever got this much stuff packed in between those two covers. Just a few pages of reading and you'll already be on information overload!

There are so many features in this publication, I'll probably not be able to name them all. (Do you hear enthusiasm in my review?) Case studies. End of chapter summaries. Good table of contents. Vignettes describing positive-and negative-experiences. Over 40 no-cost ideas. Worksheets. Resources. Training designs. Reminder cards. Comprehensive index. On and on and on. There are at least four separate books in these pages, all jammed into one tremendous resource.

Bob Nelson's "1001 Ways to Reward Employees" has sold over a million copies. This book is even more of a value...especially at the surprisingly modest price. There is no question that this volume will have an impact on readers and the organizations they serve. Even just modest application of the knowledge found in this tool chest will return many more times the investment of the purchase and the time to read all that the authors share.

Highly recommended. ... Read more

Book Description

The classic motivational parable (over 500,000 copies sold worldwide) that shows you how to make your own opportunities in life, updated for the modern reader by bestselling business author Alan Axelrod

Ever since its first printing by William Randolph Hearst in 1921, The Go-Getter has inspired employees and entrepreneurs to take initiative, increase their productivity, and excel against the odds. Now, more than half a million copies later, Alan Axelrod, bestselling author of Patton on Leadership and Elizabeth I, CEO, updates the tale to address today's most pressing work issues.

In The Go-Getter, Bill Peck, a war veteran, persuades Cappy Ricks, the influential founder of the Rick's Logging & Lumbering Company, to let him prove himself by selling skunk wood in odd lengths-a job that everyone knows can only lead to failure. When Peck goes on to beat his quota, Rick hands Peck the ultimate opportunity and the ultimate test: the quest for an elusive blue vase. Drawing on such classic values as honesty, determination, passion, and responsibility, Peck overcomes nearly insurmountable obstacles to find the vase and launch hia career as a successful manager.

In a time when jobs are tight and managers are too busy for mentoring, how can you maintain positive energy, take control of your career, and prepare yourself to ace the tests that come your way? By applying the timeless lessons in this compulsively readable parable, employees at all levels can learn to rekindle the go-getter in themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great selection for anyone who needs a "jump start" in life.
I give this book a '10' because it is short, in a story format, and has surpassed the test of time. Many "motivational" books are long; too long for someone who is busy and needs information to the point. I read this book in an hour and really felt like I was involved with the main character.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Shall Be Done
This book is a must read for businessmen, educators, coaches, and anyone who feels like they are in need of a lift! The parable in this book is a great motivator. In today's world where most everyone is trying to find the easy way out and pass the buck, this book teaches you to be on the lookout for what may seem like a dubious task, but in actuality is a "blue vase" test! I read this book in about two hours, easy reading! Should be required in all schools.

4-0 out of 5 stars Be a Go Getter at all costs?
The one good thing I learned from this book is that to be successful you have to live with the motto "it shall be done".

While the author thinks this is a great motto to live by, I question if this is really a good motto for someone to live by.

For example if you want to make 10 sales each day, and you work 14 hours a day to make it happen every day for years on end - thereby forgetting about your family and relationships, you may have attained wealth, but you will not have a balanced life.

Ok. You get my point. It's good to be a go-getter, but you need a balance too.

I highly recommend you read Cheryl Richardson's book, Take Time For Your Life, together with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Motivational Audio Book
A great little book that is a sort of "pick me up." I borrowed the book from the library on audio CD. It is a short little book, so even an unabridged audio was not very long. The Go Getter is a fanciful parable about the payoff of being a hard worker and being determined to get things done. The story is simple, direct, and motivational. It raises the listener's spirits without preaching. It was great fun and appropriate for any audience. The reader spoke clearly and with a feeling appropriate to the material. It was very comfortable listening.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must for every personal library
ever failed to complete a task or project? did you have a good excuse? i am sure that you did... first, for yourself. then for others. when you are ready to stop making excuses and start achieving results, buy this book. if i could only have ten books on my bookcase, this would be one of them! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A little treasure trove for you!
This book sits by my computer and helps get me going when I'm not in the mood to do my work or write my next newsletter article. The book focuses on success quotes, but it's much more than that. A very nice addition to the junior wealth-builder's bookshelf.
In addition, I get Tom's free email newsletter every Monday Morning and it's quite a pick me up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick Bursts of Motivation!
Perfect for quick bursts of motivation and inspiration. Everyone can use a quick pick me up throughout the day. This is the perfect book for that quick bust of inspiration. It's loaded from page to page with powerful quotes... Josh Hinds - GetMotivation.com

Not everybody is self-motivated and often times we don't have the time to read an entire book in one sitting. Tom Vilord's 1001 Motivational Quotes for Success is perfect for those times where you need a few quick "shots in the arm". What is most impressive is his collection of quotes from some of the greatest writers, philosopers and business titans. Even Tom Vilord himself has quite a few original quotes you can benefit from. 4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant but not enough "behind the scenes" Survivor stories
When I saw this book at my local library I couldn't resist picking it as I'm a big fan of both Survivor and the Apprentice, and I was hoping for the definitive "behind the scenes" stories of both those shows. I also was interested in Mark Burnett's personal story, as I'm an immigrant myself (from Belgium), coming over around the same time as Burnett.

"Jump In!" starts off, strangely, with Mark's arrival in the US in 1982. He skips the first 22 years of his life entirely, making a casual reference to having been a paratrooper in the British army (and apparently having fought in the Falkland Islands war). The first chapters are the best, as Mark tells how he started of as a nanny (!), then went on to sell T-shirts on Venice Beach (very profitably), and eventually got involved in expedition-racing, first as a participant, later as a producer (the "Eco-Challenge" races). The best insider story on the Survivor series is that Survivor 4: Arabia was all set to be filmed in Jordan when 9/11 happened, and the decision was made (out of safety concerns) to alter location with a mere 8 weeks before the shooting of Survivor 4 was scheduled to start (and no delay was possible as CBS already had sold the advertizing for the show)... wow! While Burnett goes into the details of the logistical nightmares encountered in the Survivor series, don't expect a lot of insights on what happened on the show itself. Boston Rob and Rupert, probably the most important "characters" on the Survivor series, get mentioned once or twice.

The book's release was timed to coincide with the debut of the Contender, which Burnett describes in details on how the show came about, and which he felt confident would be a huge hit. It's now 4 months and we know that the Contender was a miss (and not renewed by NBC for next year). But don't feel bad for Burnett, an Apprentice-like show with Martha Stewart will start in September. Meanwhile, this book is pleasant, and coulda shoulda been the ultimate insider's account of Survivor, but itsn't. Mark, the tribe has spoken!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!
I really enjoyed this book! I'm a big fan of "The Apprentice" and always wanted to know more about Mark Burnett based on his success with different shows, so I started to read this book in the store and had to buy it!There are many interesting behind the scenes stories, but I found it inspiring for his life and negotiation advice.I vacation in L.A. for a few weeks each summer and I always joked about selling T-shirts on Venice Beach.Well, Mark successfully did it while I just joked about it.His confidence really helps him to jump in and makes things work. This book has given me good advice on how I should "jump in" more instead of over-analzying ideas.Another wonderful aspect of this book is the love of his parents and children that comes through. It's so good to hear someone talk about their great parents instead of hearing complaints.Mark really does love his family and I enjoyed reading about it.I started watching "the Contender" because of this book and I love it.I only watched the first season of "Survivor" but now that I enjoyed his book so much, I'm planning on watching it too.I highly recommend "Jumping In".It is a very enjoyable and inspiring book!!Don't over-analyze, jump in and buy it!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Starts great, then gets boring
Much like the Donald Trump book, this book starts off with some cool advice and an inspirational origins story, but about halfway through becomes a laundry list of accomplishments. If interested, just read the first few chapters at the bookstore, and save yourself the cash. Sorry, Mark, but you have plenty of money, so don't hold this against me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Burnett, who he is and how he came to be!
Let's get one thing straight: this book is not about Survivor, The Apprentice, The Contender, or any of the other shows that Burnett has produced. Sure, he does mention them - as they helped to build his career - but not from the same point of view as some other reviewers perhaps expected. Thus, don't expect to learn about the inter-cast relationships on such shows. You will be disappointed if you buy this book with that intention.

This is a book about taking chances and attaining greatness. Period. Burnett came to the U.S. in the early 80s with NOTHING. However, over the following twenty years, he would become a dominant force in television and alter its landscape dramatically - perhaps more so than anyone else has done in the past 100 or so years.

That is the point of this book: how he went from a virtual NOBODY to a SOMEBODY. It's not very heavy on the business side, though chances are that you will learn something new if you read it with that intent. What it IS full of is how he took chance after chance after chance. The title alone should tell you this.

I will say that he does praise his business partners, such as Martha Stewart, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Donald Trump, etc. But what did you expect? However, you shouldn't let that aspect of the book to keep you from getting his message: Jump In! : Even if you don't know how to swim!

2-0 out of 5 stars All title, little substance
No doubt Mr.Burnett has achieved great success. But pay closer attention to his "credible reviews" on this book. They praise the man,not the book.
I bought Trump:Art of the Deal,at a garage sale for a buck.
Similar content.Famous author.Great real life stories. But like too many autobiographical self help business books, too much bragging, annd too little substance.
We know what you've done,Mr.Burnett, tell us exactly how you did it.
Bet his next book has an equally cutesy title.

Book Description

For more than two decades, Dr. John Hoover has written books on leadership, creativity, and organizational performance, extolling the virtues of flattened organizations, collaborative leadership, and shared responsibility. His clients welcomed him, praised him...yet (he felt) completely ignored his advice! This book contains the confession of a recovering "I-Boss" (Idiot Boss). After decades of writing and consulting, Dr. John finally realized that the vast majority of people he kept trying to "energize," "motivate," and "enlighten" were, well, idiots. Also he was an idiot for trying to change them. Instead, he has decided to enlighten you, who actually have to continue working for difficult and demanding bosses. You cannot change them. You cannot challenge them. Yet, you can survive them, even thrive under them, if you learn how to deal with them using this book. It offers hope for the spirit and strategy for the mind to help you deal with your work place situation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
John Hoover, an organizational leadership consultant, discusses how to deal with an "Idiot Boss" - or I-Boss - who does stupid things. Hoover distinguishes idiots from other tricky bosses, including those who think they are God, or who are paranoid, sadistic or Machiavellian. He leaves the reader with a couple of issues. First, you'll think no good, caring bosses still exist. Second, he doesn't tell you clearly where to set boundaries or when enough is finally enough. He often advocates appeasing bad bosses, although his other counsel on how to deal with them has some effective pointers. To his credit, Hoover is very candid about how he has learned from experience, including his mistakes. He offers personal examples from his experiences at Disney and elsewhere, and tries to write in a light-hearted or whimsical vein. We found the book strongest when it is strategic and weakest when it tries to be funny, given that with bad bosses you only laugh to keep from crying.

USA TODAY/March 2004:
"Anyone who has to work should read How to Work for an Idiot."

Wall Street Journal/March 2004
"Dr. Hoover recommends admitting that you are 'powerless' over the jerks in your life. Otherwise, 'harboring all that resentment is like drinking a cup of poison and waiting for the jerk to die'."

New York Times/January 2004:
"There is no question that 'How to Work for an Idiot: How to Survive and Thrive Without Killing Your Boss' is a subversive book. People will pick it up expecting a tasty blend of commiseration and advice. They will put it down thinking, to paraphrase the famous line from the cartoon character Pogo, "We have met the idiot, and he is us."

Weekend TODAY SHOW/Campbell Brown/January 2004
"'How to Work for an Idiot' contains a lot of humor, with plenty of good information as well."

FOX NEWS/Neil Cavuto/January 2004:
"Dr. John's 'How to Work for an Idiot' is very funny stuff, with some stinging jabs in there."

The Miami Herald/January 2004:
"As amusing as his vignettes may be, the proffered advice is pretty sound and includes solid steps for coping and surviving a daily dose of determined and authoritative stupidity without committing any capital crimes. Hoover closes with a bibliography that includes three of the author's own books, so maybe he's not as much of an idiot as he claims to be."

Dallas Morning News January/2004:
"[Dr. John Hoover] is creating a New Year's buzz with his just published 'How to Work for an Idiot'."

Bloomberg Television/December 2003:
"If you have the unhappy experience of working for someone you think is a real jerk, Dr. John Hoover says there is hope."

Bloomberg Radio Network/December 2003:
"Dr. John's book about working for idiots is so cleverly disguised; you might think you're reading Norman Vincent Peale."

CNNfn/December 2003:
"...an irreverent and realistic look at what people must deal with every day at work."

Philadelphia Daily Local/December 2003:
"Hoover, a self-acknowledged idiot boss himself in recovery, says American workers should stop whining about their clueless bosses and learn to make the most of it."

Minneapolis Star Tribune/December 2003:
"There's more than humor in this fresh look at the perennial problem of incompetent leadership at work."

Orlando Sentinel/December 2003:
"Idiot bosses are so common, writes John Hoover, that he shortens the term to I-Bosses in How to Work for an Idiot."

5-0 out of 5 stars More than words
This is an excellent book. Having suffered for four years from an idiot, sadist, masochist, and all the other categories that Dr. Hoover describes, I found it of excellent encouragment to have read the book. With funny real (or unreal) stories, the author goes through different bosses' personalities and how to approach them. I've tried a few things for a few days and I've felt marvellous, when long before I would have felt miserable. Even if some of the things Dr. Hoover says are things we already know, it was great that someone reminded me what the true nature of boss-employee relationships are all about.

2-0 out of 5 stars Funny but no meat
We've become used to catchy titles for books. And for obvious reasons, they sell more books. But catchy or humorous titles usually are just that...titles. In the case of this book, the humor doesn't end with the title. It is in fact an entire book of humor. Upon completion of it, I felt like I had just spent a night at the Improv, rather than learning about a serious business issue. Now don't get me wrong, it is an enjoyable book to read and at some parts I found myself laughing quite often. However, I was looking for some serious knowledge to go along with the chuckles. This book simply does not deliver that. Throughout the book, the author makes conscious (or possibly unconscious)choices to divert the topic towards humor rather than dive deeper into the serious aspects of what an employee is do when they work for a terrible boss. In short, he "chickens out" when real dialogue is necessary.
If you're looking for a book to make you laugh, or something light-hearted for a Sunday afternoon read, this is it. If however, you work for an "idiot-boss" and need some serious guidance and direction, skip this book altogether. It will be of no use to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author's Comment
This book summarizes current, practical knowledge about what it means to be an effective leader. Leadership implies three major thrusts: strategic thinking (leadership for what?), relationship building (leading whom?) and designing an action context (organizational design issues) all discussed in the text. Further, the book asserts that leaders who target Level Three (core values, assumptions, beliefs, and expectations or VABEs) can be more effective and powerful than those who, traditionally, target Level One (focus on behavior) and Level Two (conscious thinking). The book also introduces the notion of INFOCRACIES, or organizations that are increasingly being redesigned by the information systems within them and presents a framework for thinking about developing deeper influence. As the author, clearly I'm biased, AND I've found that this approach has worked very well with many clients and executive education programs. The book was intended as a dense summary for executive education audiences in short, week long seminars. If you have suggestions, I'm eager to hear. ... Read more

Blink is about the first two seconds of looking--the decisive glance that knows in an instant. Gladwell, the best-selling author of The Tipping Point, campaigns for snap judgments and mind reading with a gift for translating research into splendid storytelling. Building his case with scenes from a marriage, heart attack triage, speed dating, choking on the golf course, selling cars, and military maneuvers, he persuades readers to think small and focus on the meaning of "thin slices" of behavior. The key is to rely on our "adaptive unconscious"--a 24/7 mental valet--that provides us with instant and sophisticated information to warn of danger, read a stranger, or react to a new idea.

Gladwell includes caveats about leaping to conclusions: marketers can manipulate our first impressions, high arousal moments make us "mind blind," focusing on the wrong cue leaves us vulnerable to "the Warren Harding Effect" (i.e., voting for a handsome but hapless president). In a provocative chapter that exposes the "dark side of blink," he illuminates the failure of rapid cognition in the tragic stakeout and murder of Amadou Diallo in the Bronx. He underlines studies about autism, facial reading and cardio uptick to urge training that enhances high-stakes decision-making.In this brilliant, cage-rattling book, one can only wish for a thicker slice of Gladwell's ideas about what Blink Camp might look like.--Barbara Mackoff ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasurable to look, touch, and read
Malcolm Gladwell has a very easy writing style that makes for a good read. Throughout the book he discusses the fenomenon of "blink" decisions made without thinking, based on "thin slice of information". These decisions often prove to be much better ones than the ones made after long analysis and considering all pro's and con's. The book is filled with a lot of interesting stories that makes it read like a novel.

I cannot argue whether Gloadwell's theory is right or wrong, but one thing is certain: my decision to buy this book was based on a first good impression and the decision was good. I like "Blink" a lot and intend to keep it. The other purchasing decision that was based on a "thin slice of information" was to get "Can We Live 150 Years?" by M. Tombak. I was again right - it is another great book, although I do not like its cover. By the way, "Blink" has a great, elegant cover. Pleasurable to look and to touch... Only four stars, because I hardly ever give 5 stars. Tombak's book 4.5 stars (bad cover).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting book
I really liked this book.Read the whole thing at a bookstore.Fascinating look at how we humans make up our minds much quicker and with much less data than we think we do.I believe Gladwell is bringing us closer to the truth about how humans really make decision.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories, but standing on others' shoulders
I really enjoyed this book.Gladwell is a wonderful researcher and communicator. However, if I did not have the context of William Duggan's works--namely, "Napolean's Glance" and "The Art Of What Works: How Success Really Happens"--I would not have appreciated Gladwell's contribution in this field of expert intuition.

Duggan is a professor of strategy and also a consultant to, um,consumers of strategic thinking working in the U.S. government. It seems that some of the less satisfied reviewers of "Blink" would appreciate the supplementary information from Duggan's work.

1-0 out of 5 stars .........I Found Myself Thinking Why I Bought This Book.
I am Surprised for two things with this book.

1)Title reads power of thinking without thinking which is not at all congruent with its content.

2)What made this book a Bestseller ?

I felt Like sleeping while reading this book.

So do youself a favour.Buy this book only if you have insomnia, if not then look for something else.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept to combine with Moral thought...
Blink reminded me of what Bruce Lee had said: "Master the lessons in this book and then throw it away." He meant that once you have it down, his fighting style is automatic; you no longer have to think about it, and the structure of thought is no different.

Another book is relevant here; Moral Armor. Blink discusses cognitive action in slices; a better mind works with manageable slices while a slower mind attempts to work with too much information. Moral Armor describes the moral pattern of thought, which isolates its essential elements and makes decisions efficiently with an additional facet: complete moral certainty.

In Blink, it is said that those at the top make decisions with much less information than one would suppose, but I'm inclined to think that like Bruce Lee, they have mastered their realm so completely that they can strike fast, precisely due to that prior foundation of experience.

Perfect action in thought is based on Aristotelian logic, which is algebraic. Lethargic thought such as Blink's thick slices is evidence of a mind that cannot tell the difference between what is essential or inessential in any given context; such a person lacks a clear standard of value. In Moral Armor, that standard is shown to be life itself, where any speed of mind will reach the same end if only the way is known.

I like both concepts. To know what is right and how to get there, I'd love to get there in a Blink!

There are more high-salaried women in the workforce today than ever before, yet most females remain seriously underpaid when compared to their male counterparts. Motivational speaker and financial journalist Barbara Stanny decided to find out why by identifying the differences between those who draw the big bucks and those who don't. In Secrets of Six-Figure Women she reveals what makes the leading edge tick, as well as how others can use the information to boost their own paychecks and self-esteem. "For far too many women, financial limits have become a fact of life. The thought of making more is like climbing Mount Everest, a colossal, if not impossible task," writes Stanny. "That's exactly how I used to feel." By examining scores of top moneymakers, along with dozens of those earning below their potentials, Stanny discovered what works and what doesn't. After analyzing the subsequent lessons (i.e., you actually can boost your income without selling out, the requisite traits to do so can be developed by virtually anyone, money really can't buy happiness), she proposes specific strategies for maximizing their impact (intend from the start to succeed, stretch yourself, manage any payoff with care). Stanny professes throughout that she desires to offer "insight, hope and guidance to any of you who aspire to earn more." With this surprisingly practical and ultimately inspirational guidebook, she delivers. --Howard Rothman ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Even for Women Who Are Already Doing Very Well, Thank You
Reviewed by Carolyn Howard-Johnson, Award-winning author

This review is the most whole hearted endorsement of any non fiction book I have reviewed this year. This book is so sorely needed, even by most women who are already doing very well, thank you. It is also because it is well written. Barbara is the bestselling author of Prince Charming Isn't Coming and she knows what she is talking about. She has been there, done that . All you'll need to do is read one chapter, "Raising the Bar," and you'll have enough information (if you choose to listen to the advice) worth a whole lot more than the price of one little book!

This is a book about strategy. How many women do you know who actually have a strategy?

(Carolyn Howard-Johnson's first novel, This is the Place, has won eight awards. Her newly released Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remember has won three. Her new book of poetry, Skyscapes: A Woman's View, is looking for a home.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book on successful women that has depth!
If you are a woman (though I think this book would help men as well) and want to earn more, this book will provide the information you need. In fact, the author, with the knowledge she gained from writing this book, dramatically increased her own income. So many books that profess to help you earn more are just fluff. This book has depth. Of course you need to follow the advice given, but the author handholds your way there. I found much advice that I can immediately implement. One of the best career/business books I've read and I've read many!

4-0 out of 5 stars The secret is how you use your internal resources
This book is written in a very upbeat and casual style and very liberally sprinkled with quotes from a fairly large selection of the hundreds of women interviewed. It is easy to read and very thought provoking. While many of the ideas and strategies seem like common sense, a few of the strategies are ideas that women (and mean) can benefit from employing no matter what their career and salary level. I enjoyed this book and gained a lot of insight.

One of the strategies called "The Trap" that especially caught my eye was given the motto "bite off more than you can chew, but not so much you choke," This idea involved stretching yourself but not too thin and also emphasized that some women can be too hard on themselves, extremely impatient or overly meticulous. This dealt with taking some risk and possibly get in over your head and not realizing you need to cut yourself some slack and instead pushing even harder until you snap. The author used many interviewees comments and experiences as well as her known to clearly illustrate both the danger and the handling of "The Trap".

The bottom line of these strategies is that it is not what type of career you pick (all different fields from musicians and artists to CEO were represented), what company you work for (or not),what your education or your background is, but how you use your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual strengths and improve them by following the laid out strategies that will determine whether you can be a "six-figure woman" or man.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strategies for using ALL your strengths to move ahead

5-0 out of 5 stars Attitude really IS Everything
There's a wealth of information for women in this guide to increasing your income.

Barbara Stanny begins by explaining why so many women are low earners. (She illustrates her point well with interviews.) She then goes on to give seven strategies for overcoming the fear, lethargy, self-sabotage, and false beliefs that keep women stuck in low earning situations.

Perhaps the most important lesson in this book is that a woman's ATTITUDE about her right and ability to earn more money is what will make the difference in her financial life.

Eye-opening reading, with great practical strategies. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Motivating!
Imagine sitting down next to nine highly successful individuals and listening to them talk about how they achieved success.

How much would you pay for something like that? How much would you pay to get a copy of the transcripts? Well my friend this book is exactly that--the transcripts of successful people telling you how they achieved success. And how you can also reach success and get similar results by using them as a role model.

My favorite interview was the one with Jack Canfield. Jack's humble and generous style really impressed me. He is my motivational role model.

Getting this book for only $15.95 is a joke! Why? Because Mike is a great interviewer, and he really gets these guys talking about HOW they achieved success. If you take only one idea from this book and really run with it, you WILL greatly improve your life! I found many, many great ideas in this book. I am sure you will too.

Mike has tremendous enthusiasm for achieving success. You can hear clips of him doing his motivational/success radio show on mikelitman.com. I highly recommend you go check them out. When I need a boost of motivation I listen to them, because hearing Mike is MOTIVATING!

5-0 out of 5 stars " Should Be Required Reading In All High Schools "
My library contains 900 plus books that I depend upon for every facet of my marketing business. Included are such success magnates as Andrew Carneige, Napolean Hill, Anthony Robbins, Jay Abraham, Dan Kennedy and many more.
Yet I have created a new category of gems that I depend upon for the 21st century type obstacles and opportunities. The book that leads the way is " CONVERSATIONS WITH MILLIONAIRES."
This gem by Mike Litman & Jason Oman has been read 3+ times in a 2 month period, and due to the fact that I realize how complacent I`ve become in certain forms of my business thinking. This book has shaken me out of this place of less than model performance, and has given me a new fire that I`ll continue to harbour for a good long time.
I`ve known many of the Entrepreneurs in the book contents, and am still in awe, when I reflect upon the "Mike Litman Trend" that I believe will be here right along with the greats for many years to come.
I have 2 copies for myself and have bought and given away as presents 4 more. Needless to say, I have alot of very grateful friends who now love "CONVERSATIONS WITH MILLIONAIRES."
I ONLY HAVE ONE REGRET, that I`ve not yet seen the press release, that indicates there is another Mike Litman book coming out soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy for Content not Award winning writing....
To put it effectively yet succinctly, I recommend this book more for the core content as opposed to the Nobel, Pulitzer, etc. manner of prose.

The worth of this book can be found in its ability to condense the major success strategies of a number of well known individuals all in one book. Not only does it give useful, practical and actionable information, it also gives interesting biographical details as well. I have come to believe that understanding the mental workings of successful people and their history--not just what others say about them--is a critical factor in duplicating success. As one sage aptly stated, "Experience is the most expensive teacher". In my analysis of successful people the world over, one thing is certain: they study the success of others and duplicate the strategies that work, augmenting them when necessary.

Bill Gates reputedly reads approx. 120 books a year on various subjects (as an example).

One of the most thought-provoking powerful ideas I got from this book is something that a mentor of Jim Rohn told him early in his career "become a millionaire (or billionaire) for what it makes of you to achieve it".

There is a very strong moral/spiritual theme running through this book as well. Essentially it demonstrates that it is possible to acquire wealth in a manner than doesn't make one suffer in other areas of one's life such as health, peace of mind, love/relationships or true expression (doing what you really love to do). This is perhaps the biggest plus of the books.

I bought and read a copy of this book for myself and purchased another for a friend as well in order to complete the circle of giving and receiving (which according to those profiled in the book is a, if not THE, major factor in overall success).

Lastly, I noticed that this book was self-published by the authors which says alot about their own business acumen. They cut out the middle man (a big publishing house) and the fact that they were able to promote this book and have it do so well is more evidence that this book is worth owning.

2-0 out of 5 stars Repeat Information
Not much effort in writing this book! The writer, Mike Littman, simply transcribed conversations he has had with other self-help millionaires on his radio shows. Nine millionaires are interviewed: Jim Rohn, Mark Victor Hanson, Wally Amos, Jack Canfield, Robert Allen, Sharon Lechter, Michael Gerber, Jim McCann, and Jay Conrad Levinson. Most are promoting their own self-help books and products. For example:

Page 208 (Jay Conrad Levinson)
"I did a course called, Guerrilla Marketing for the New Millennium and its available from the same place you talked about before, Aesop.com. Thats the first placed I'd go. I say that because I wrote it for people who don't know anything about marketing but want to use marketing to grow a business. Or, they have a business and they want to make it bigger and cut down the amount of money that they are investing in marketing. All of the things that I'm saying, naturally, are in my books Guerilla Marketing.
The course that I gave called, Guerilla Marketing for the New Millennium, is up to the state of the moment. It's up to state of what marketing is doing right now."

In my opinion, the book was written with the sole purpose of making money both for the author and for the interviewees. Don't buy it! The same information can be found in greater detail in other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really, really great book
This book is great because you get to learn about the different philosophies of millionaires -- where as if you buy an individual book from one author, you only learn one way.

It's like getting 9 books in one, only better because you get a snap shot of each millionaire's method of success.

A wonderful read, I learned something new in every chapter! ... Read more

The author of 24 books on maximizing personal and leadership potential, John C. Maxwell believes "the difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure." In Failing Forward, he offers inspirational advice for turning the difficulties that inevitably arise in life into stepping stones that help you reach the top. Noting that star performers are often those who aggressively push forward after encountering adversity, Maxwell shows how a variety of well-known and not-so-well-known people have forged ahead despite obstacles that could have derailed them. They include: Mary Kay Ash, who founded her cosmetics firm against enormous odds when the direct-sales company she toiled in for 25 years resisted her continued corporate climb; Truett Cathy, who lost two brothers (and business partners) in an airplane crash and experienced his own serious medical problems before establishing the Chick-fil-A fast-food chain; Greg Horn, who reopened his Kentucky grocery store just 21 days after it suffered $1 million in flood damage; and Beck Weathers, who lost his nose, half of one arm, and the fingers on his other in the infamous 1996 Into Thin Air Mt. Everest tragedy, but now takes a positive message of survival and conquest to audiences around the world. --Howard Rothman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You don't have to afraid of failure anymore
Many of us dislike failures and mistakes. We will try to avoid them because we are afraid to be labeled as losers. However, this book tells us there is no perfectionist on earth, as long as you are human being, you would make mistakes. Those mistakes will guide you the way to success if you are to learn from them. The difference between average and achieving people is their perception and response to failure.

This books provide us with 15 steps to failing forward. You are going to overcome adversity and maximize your potential if you follow these steps.

Moreover, Maxwell gives readers a lot of real life experience examples to demonstrate how successful people response to adversity and handle it.

This book is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well structured book of encouragement
I have read a few of John Maxwell's books about leadership and found them all to be insightful. In fact, he is usually one of the first authors I recommend to anyone looking for a book about leadership. I particularly enjoyed this book because it brings a somewhat different perspective to failure - a practical one.

We all have heard the cliches about "staying the course", and "not giving up", but this book adds layers of details about failure that you will probably not find in other books. Maxwell goes step-by-step into the numerous facets that can determine the differenc between success and failure. Having finished the book, I am more inspired to get busy, and make things happen - even if it means failing forward a few times.

Also, I especially liked the fact that John Maxwell includes numerous stories about those who have failed (usually numerous times) before achieving their goals. The stories help illustrate the points he makes throughout the book, and prove that it takes determination, effort, hard work, and sacrifice to get through the obstacles that you will face while chasing your dreams.

I highly recomend this book to anyone interested in learning practical strategies for achieving your goals and dreams. The exercises at the end of each chapter will help put Maxwell's concepts into action for your own life. Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Failure is Your Stepping Stone to Success!
John C. Maxwell brings a gift to all who have ever felt like a "failure" by the extraordinary examples of some of the greatest people that have achieved outstanding success, only to attribute that to their prior so-called "failures."
This book will help you USE the lessons you can learn from your experience. One of the most important aspects of this book is to NOT PERSONALIZE the experience, and take it into the core of your being, The KEY is to take "you" out of the failure, and look at it as another outward experience that will teach you much. It is most often that our deepest struggles are the very foundations for our greatest growths and triumphs. This book sets a model of clean ethics, taking responsibility, being PASSIONATE about what you are doing, because without passion, you might as well just stop - because passion is the driving force behind every success.
If you have been through the mill, and want to really be inspired about your experiences from some of the greatest people who have brought inspiration to others, then this book will give that to you. An excellent book for turning failure into genuine success. 10 Stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Failure is never final
This was is my first book by Maxwell, but it won't be my last. Maxwell mixes scriptures along with success principles and tells us that failure is never final. It's not how many times you fall, it's how many times you get back up and how much you learn from it.

Some people have called this a hookie-pookie superficial feel good book. I strongly disagree, except that I can do more by feeling good than by feeling lousy.

Maxwell is excellent. His words will inspire you but more than that, his words, when followed will instruct you as well.

Outstanding book. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important nook about an important life issue
John Maxwell does a marvellous job of helping people to work through failure and move on. I am 53 years old and was recently laid off by an employer who told me that I was the best employee he had. I felt betrayed and would wake up every morning thinking of ways to get even (even though I knew I wouldn't act on them.) I was really hurt and couldn't get over it. A friend of mine suggested I read two books. The first one she recommended was this one and it really helped me to put things into perspective. Instead of moping around the house, I started looking through the papers and making calls to get job interviews. Yes, it got me going! The other book my friend recommended was Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self which helped me to understand that every situation (even a a situation I don't like) is an opportunity to be my best, and it showed me how to make the most of any situation. With books like these in the world, we never have to be stuck and we can really make the most of our lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend
The truths in this book seem so obvious when you read it, yet it's the opposite of what's been taught and praciticed for so many years. Don't waste time trying to perfect what you don't do well, you'll never make a weakness into a strength. Find out what you do well and become so good at it that what you don't do well won't matter. Unfortunately, I recognized all too well all of the clues that indicate operating in a weakness rather than a strength. The good news is that I can stop trying to perfect my weaknesses and start enjoying my strengths. A must read for managers, coaches, career counselors and especially young people trying to figure out what it is they want to do with their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide for success
Donald Clifton and Paula Nelson tap an important principle: Focus on strength and manage weakness. They offer a step by step process to identify personal and corporate strengths and discuss how doing more of what you do well launches you into super achievement mode. This is a quick and excellent read for anyone interested in personal or business success.

Another book that takes a more analytical approach to the principles outlined in this book is "The 80/20 Principle" by Richard Koch. Reading both books together will convince you beyond any doubt that there is power and purpose to the success foundations found in these pages.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Soar" Bores
A coemployee recommended this book, because quite frankly, I am a heavy-handed manager who sqaushes my employees' strengths like cockroaches, while demanding they get better at what they are incompentent at. As simple as it is, I have always thought "The Little Engine That Could" taught the essence of success. Now, after reading "Soar With Your Strengths", I'm sure 'Little Engine' teaches the essence of success. Yeah, let's just blame everyone else for what we stink at and make ourselves feel better by only doing the couple things we're good at. This does happen to be real life, and the losers will be the commune hippies who toke doob and tell each other just how strong they are. Well, you weaklings just keep on talking to yourself in the mirror, as the rest of the world passes you by.

3-0 out of 5 stars An early effort on Strengths-based organizations...
Donald O. Clifton is more recently the co-author of "Now Discover your Strengths." Soar with your strengths is obviously an earlier version of that book without the web-based testing or defined "themes". "Soar" has the stories and suggestions behind the data found in "Now Discover". Nothing new here, but the stories may help those who struggle with the concepts in "Now Discover". I particularly liked the rabbit story at the beginning (which I empathized with) and the suggestions at the end of the book about imagining your goals and dreams.

Again, nothing new here, but some really nice illustrations of material found in other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humanistic
This book has revolutionized my coaching practice and career counseling. The authors' theory of concentrating on your strengths and what you were meant to do makes perfect sense, now that they've said it. It's one of those books where you'll read it and say, "I knew that!" An obvious no-brainer for the young adult starting a career, I've found it exceptionally helpful for people in mid-life transition. Yes, it would've been good to have read it earlier, but at mid-life you've discovered through experience what does and doesn't work for you. This motivates change, and the changes you'll make after having read this, can be drastic. I find many mid-life clients unsatisfied with their work, yet unsure what to do about it, because they've come to know only their weaknesses. They yearn to do what they love, but aren't sure how to shape that. This book and the StrengthFinder (tm) profile jump-start the quest. I call this "humanistic," because once you know your strengths and are living them (and this applies to personal life as well as professional life), you soar. It's "deeply soul-satisfying," "a relief," and "the best thing I ever did," to quote some of my clients. ... Read more

This truly the ultimate goals program. I have tried many other gaols type programs, nothing has worked as well as the advice herein by Brian Tracy.

1-0 out of 5 stars This review is for the audiobook
Most of the content is great, albeit Mr. Tracy seems to have a hyper-ambition about how much money one earns. Unfortunately, I had a hard time listening to Mr. Tracy's delivery of the material; it is very monotone and dry. If he could add some humor and excitement into his delivery, listening to the audiobook would be a much more pleasurable experience.

I think most people underestimate the value of goals. Most people know about goals, but how many people actually have written goals?

In this book, Brian Tracy offers a powerful program on how to set and reach your goals and in record time. ...
