Book Description

Millions of people around the world are involved in direct selling. There are 12 million in the United States alone!Almost 74 percent of direct sellers are women.

An estimated 46 million people in the world are involved in direct selling, according to the Direct Selling Association. In less than ten years this number is expected to grow to an unbelievable 200 million! With more people looking for careers that offer independence, flexibility, and tremendous income potential, this book offers a one-stop source of nuts-and-bolts advice, insights, and practical sales skills.

Build It Big: 101 Insider Secrets from Top Direct Selling Experts addresses the three most popular models of direct selling:
* network marketing (e.g., Amway)
* party planning (e.g., Pampered Chef)
* person-to-person(e.g., Guardian Life Insurance)

The training that many of these companies offer is limited and typically covers only product features and benefits, basic sales techniques, recruitment, and order processing.

Through extensive research, the Direct Selling Women's Alliance (DSWA) has identified four crucial "life skills" that often are neglected or omitted from a company's training and support program:

* Financial and tax guidance.
* Coaching and leadership skills development.
* Business management and technology training.
* Daily success practices and implementation.

Build It Big unveils the methods and approaches in developing these skills that, DSWA believes, are the true linchpins of growth and long-term sales stability. The disciplined approach and real-life insights from some of the most successful and talented people in the direct selling business will have broad appeal to rookies and veterans alike, especially for people who are opting for direct selling for part-time work, extra income, and the autonomy it offers. ... To listen to its proponents, network (or multilevel) marketing is the greatest thing since sliced bread: top performers earn $1 million a month, reside in alluring places like Aspen and Kauai, and still find quality time to happily raise children and lovingly cement spousal relationships. Contending that those who fail to make it that far are ill prepared for the initial challenges they face, Mark Yarnell and Rene Reid Yarnell--married network marketers who are among the industry's leaders, as well as members of a University of Illinois faculty that teaches the only college-certified course on the subject in the U.S.--have written Your First Year in Network Marketing: Overcome Your Fears, Experience Success, and Achieve Your Dreams! to convey both advice and inspiration to newcomers. Peppered with personal anecdotes that bring their recommendations to life, the two offer logical strategies for overcoming rookie obstacles and kick starting a career. Individual chapters explore issues such as battling rejection, avoiding depression, handling prospects, supervising recruits, and managing time. Each concludes with a comprehensive summary, but save it for later reference and don't skip the preceding narrative, or you risk missing the book's considerable motivational component. --Howard Rothman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you like this book, you'll love Rene's newest release
Doug Weed was right - this is the bible of network marketing for new networkers. It has really been a helpful support to me and so many others I know. I have read and reread it several times and feel it essential for first year networkers.

But if you like this book, you'll love Rene's newest book for your prospects. It is called The New Entrepreneurs: Making a Living - Making a Life in Network Marketing. It does all the work for you to help anyone looking at network marketing overcome their resistance and seriously consider the industry without prejudice. Check it out. It's a book you'll find hard not to read in one sitting. And, although it is a business book, the stories are from the heart. I highly recommend The New Entrepreneurs as a means of building your network marketing business and Your First Year in Network Marketing once you've joined as a training tool. This will spare you the grief by teaching you what to do and, as important, what not to do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but a bit too generic
I hate to be the only person to NOT give this book 5 stars, but I don't think it deserves it.
The Yarnell's (now divorced) are probably the most successful spousal team in network marketing, and reading their lessons is important to each of us. Some of the gems in the book revolve around the distributor, as they become more successful, to remember that network marketing is a *simple* business, and should be presented *simply* less you alienate your prospects who would think - "I can't do that."
And the sections on the pitfalls and negatives that come your way your first year are great reminders of what you went through, or what to expect.

My problem is that the book, to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, is far too generic. They recommend against hotel meeting room presentations; well, my company isn't set up for this. They recommend against the uplines doing the work for their frontlines. Great advice we all need to heed, but my business is run almost 100% over the internet, that's just not applicable.

A good, good book I wish I'd read 13 years ago (it wasn't out then, of course), but which I feel is too vanilla. Regardless, I still recommend it to my downline when they join.

5-0 out of 5 stars Network Marketing is the wave of the future
There is no doubt that home based businesses are exploding and network marketing is right at the top of that explosion. Network Marketing has gained acceptance and respectablity. It is the best low risk, low cost high return business available today.

Mark Yarnell shows how to earn a high income in this business. My only complaint is the title, it is not just for newbies or your first year. As a veteran in this industry, I found some things I never knew before and was reminded of some things I forgot.

Great book by Mr. Yarnell.

5-0 out of 5 stars MLM Works!
This book is Excellent. The people that don't believe that Network Marketing will work have set in their mind "limiting beliefs", like the (Wayne) gentleman who gave this book 1 star. Most likely he didn't read the book.

Think and Grow Rich: "You become what you think about," Remember it!

People all over the world have made Network Marketing their "home". It's the best way to earn a living, while giving you the most freedom. This book is a great source of information and it will help any beginner to succeed. There is of course work involved, but join a company that has a great up-line, working w/ the best and getting the best training and support and you will achieve extra-ordinary results.

The reason why most people fail in MLM companies is because of the lack of training. If you got a J.O.B and the boss said; "Okay there is your desk, get to work" and provided no training, how long would you stay there?

I would recommend working for a nutrition company. Why? For three reasons: 1) because you will earn a great amount of money. 2) You will improve your health and 3) you will help others improve their lives. Some of my customers would say, "Those are expensive vitamins" and I would say, compared to what? Heart disease, Strokes, Cancer, or Diabetes? I would say you are getting a bargain.

All vitamins are not created equal. If you trust the regular store to your nutritional needs. I would consider going to the Veterinarian for your health care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Information fro the informed
Excellent book for the new network marketer, Yarnell speaks from experience. Pay special attention to the detailed steps the authors recommend to avoid the pitfalls encountered in your first year, especially chapters on rejection and depression.
I could'nt imagine going through my first year without this book as a guide, EXCELLENT! ... Read more

Book Description

What does it really take to succeed in business today? In A New Brand World, Scott Bedbury, who helped make Nike and Starbucks two of the most successful brands of recent years, explains this often mysterious process by setting out the principles that helped these companies become leaders in their respective industries. With illuminating anecdotes from his own in-the-trenches experiences and dozens of case studies of other winning-and failed-branding efforts (including Harley-Davidson, Guinness, The Gap, and Disney), Bedbury offers practical, battle-tested advice for keeping any business at the top of its game. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars BRANDING, FOR EXECUTIVES. READ IT FOR THE CASE STUDIES.
It is difficult to review a book that one has enjoyed reading and then say that it was not up to the mark (in terms, of course, of only my expectations.)

No doubt that Scott Bedbury's work is a fast paced read, his writing is lucid and quite frequently quotably light-hearted. There is a lot of material here for people in larger corporations or even general marketing folks. And where Bedbury truly shines is in the case studies he presents in the 8 chapters.

But if, like me, you set off on this book looking for some newfangled insights into the world of branding, then this is not the book for you. The title claims to proffer "8 principles". Let's face it, at the end of the day, principles are not that hard to create and this becomes quite painfully clear when you reach the end of this book and wonder if you have learnt anything new.

But I am being unfairly critical. From his style, it seems an approachable business book was precisely what Bedbury's intended?

As a comprehensive introduction to the field of branding, I'd still recommend "Strategic Brand Asset Management" by Keller. For a discussion of some innovative yet reasonable forms of brand creation, especially on a shoestring, I'd usually point to a PR related book, or perhaps the rapier wit "60-minutes Brand Strategist."

But as a gentle introduction for executives in to the nebulous world of branding, or as a non-technical business book for business folk in general who place less emphasis on a structured analytical framework and are more interested in a soft springboard into the field, then "Emotional Branding" and this book from Bedbury are pretty near the top of my list of recommendations.

Very accessible and insightful stuff, if you aren't expecting a summary of last decade's JCR.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Genius Strikes Again
Scott Bedbury, the architect of building the Nike and Starbucks brands, invites us into the inner sanctum of building statement brands. For someone who loves both business biographies as well as strategy, I found this book as entertaining as I did informative and useful. It is no wonder to me why Scott was able to navigate two distinct brands to a lasting impression in America. As someone who is building my own brand (TotallySoccer), I found that Scott is right on: you must have the vision and the imagination as well as the ability to execute. A great and entertaining read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting information, but it gets old
This book was interesting and had some good information in it, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to read a book on Starbucks and Nike. I found myself dreading another story about how wonderful Starbucks or Nike are, and how great a manager the author was. It really starts to get old.

The principles are good, but you can read about most of them in any college marketing textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shows how brands are of financial importance to businesses.
There is no shortage of books on this subject and I've probably read three-quarters of them. This one comes closest to cracking the code. In fact, the author uses that exact word in describing how marketers must go about cracking a brand's genetic code.

While some may find the heavy reliance on Bedbury's experiences at Nike and Starbucks limiting, I think they're quite instructive. Mainly because while one of these brands, Nike, was created largely using traditional mass media, the other achieved its preeminence doing exactly the opposite.
In either case, Bedbury does a great job of defining what a brand is, why it is of such financial importance to a business, how to go about discovering its genetic code, and how to maximize a brand's value and ubiquity. And he does it in a very readable fashion. Definitely something anyone who places any stock in branding will want to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Comments destroy his argument
Scott has some great experience to relate but while they are a small part of the book, his diatribes against Microsoft and its nascent branding efforts in 1994 undermine his arguments and make me question his credibility.

His bias is clear. Microsoft parted ways with Scott Bedbury's favorite ad agency, Weiden & Kennedy, with whom Scott spent untold millions of dollars -- perhaps hundreds of millions -- as a Nike exec, convincing urban American youth that his shoes built with child labor at poverty wages were worth hundreds of dollars.

Bedbury says that W&K "resigned" Microsoft but my understanding was that Microsoft didn't like W&K's work.. nor did the consumers watching it. Contrary to Bedbury's comments, Microsoft's campaigns were not watched over by clueless engineers but by a career Procter & Gamble man, Bob Herbold.

Bob and P&G are not fools when it comes to advertising, handing over cash to glitzy agencies and fawning over their results. He followed each campaign with rigorous testing. The W&K ads tested poorly with consumers and really looked cold and impersonal. As I recall, they looked a lot like... tiresome Nike ads. Perhaps W&K is a one-trick pony or maybe they're just more comfortable selling shoes.

Bedbury suggests that Microsoft is the laughing stock of the advertising world and "couldn't buy" good advertising if it wanted to.

Really? Visit the latest Interbrand brand rankings at BusinessWeek's site ( August 4 edition) to view the top 10 most valuable brands. Microsoft is #2 behind Coca Cola (and would have beaten Coke had it not been for antitrust issues eroding the brand value). Curiously, I don't see Nike or Scott's Starbucks anywhere on the top ten list. Nike is in the 30s, and Starbucks almost at the bottom of the top 100.

Clearly Microsoft has figured out how to build a brand without spending all their money on television advertising or employing small children. Perhaps that's threatening to ravenous advertising agencies and execs like Bedbury who spent so much of the shareholder's money on television advertising aimed at kids who have very little money to spend. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Started Right With Multi-Level Marketing.
Initially, I was excited about the material that I requested next day delivery! This material is certainly a great start or beginning for anyone new to MLM or wants to build a serious organization of like minded individuals.

MLM or Network Marketing will one day earn the respect that it deserves as more professional networkers multiply within the industry.Independence within the industry brings many without integrity giving the industry a bad name.

Folks, it is imperative to personalize your MLM business.Meaning do not rely solely upon the corporate replicated websites and other related materials to do the job for you.You must truly take an sincere interest in both the customers and your recruits. What will you personally do for them?

What kind of support will you personally provide for your recruits or prospects?Internet technology is great, but the personal relationships will always be what truly networking is all about. If the Internet technology was the only solution then the mlm companies would do all of the marketing themselves without the thousands of network marketers or distubors or independent reps, right?

Phil offers a great start for those interested in entering an exciting profession, thats right, "Profession"It will becomes the best profession one day as more professionals enter.I am just getting started and will become one of the greatest network marketers of all time because of my sincere desire to help others succeed and willingness to work hard!Work is not a dirty word especially when work is fun! 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny
I have paid hundreds of dollars to attend trainings and courses that were not nearly as good as this tape set. It comes with a great workbook to track your progress and develop the principles needed for success in MLM. I also love Dr. Rubino's book,"Secrets of Building a Million Dollar NWM Organization From a Guy Who's Been There Done That and Shows You How to Do It Too." Very thorough and enlightening.

Book Description

Internet Marketing:Integrating Online and Offline Strategies asserts that while the Internet is a transformational innovation, pure Internet firms do not represent the future of the Internet, as failures in recent history attest. This text builds upon the fact that the future of the Internet lies in the activities of organizations large and small--in all market spaces--that use the Internet to improve service to customers and increase organizational productivity. Many powerful e-marketers predate the Internet, have strong brand identities, and use the Internet wisely to broaden the set of options, across the marketing and logistics mix that they can offer to their customers, suppliers, and partners. The underlying paradigm in the text visualizes the Internet as a significant new channel for communications and transactions that needs to be integrated into enterprise marketing strategies. In this process, businesses are transformed from isolated entities into extended enterprises-organizations whose boundaries have become permeable, admitting both suppliers and customers into many parts of the corporate information repository and requiring their participation in many aspects of daily operations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Theorical and Practical
This book, containing plenty of cases in accordance with each topic in every chapter, gives readers hand-on perception on how the theory exists within the business world. I especially love chapter 8:"Channel Power", which specifies 5 powers a manufacturer or distributor may owns and how to deploy them properly in different situation or period. While you read, the book keeps you thinking about your own business and desiring to apply these breakthrough knowledge tomorrow, great!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-own resource for channel and supply-chain strategy
It's been said that experience is inevitable, but learning is not. The latest and greatest edition of the classic MBA textbook "Marketing Channels" offers distribution and marketing executives a chance to remedy that situation.

Anne and Erin, professors at the Kellogg School and INSEAD respectively, are the two lead authors. So be forewarned -- this is an academic textbook. It's challenging, rigorous, and thought provoking.

The sixth edition is organized around a comprehensive framework for channel strategy. Each chapter walks through a different element of the framework. This approach integrates a wide range of material while making it easy to sample just the strategic topics that are relevant to your business.

Here are a few of my favorite sections in this book:

- Chapter 3 describes a methodology for segmenting customers in a channel. (Namely, focus on how end-user customers buy and what value they seek from their channel. Don't simply measure which products they buy or who they are.)

- Chapters 7 and 10 present frameworks to analyze two common channel strategy decisions - Should we sell direct or use distributors? How many distributors should we authorize?

- Chapter 11 is a wonderful and practical synthesis of Erin's 20+ years of research on creating effective and profitable strategic alliances in distribution.

- Chapter 14 demonstrates how their channel strategy framework applies to electronic channels. (There are many excellent e-commerce examples throughout the book.)

- Chapter 15 provides a great overview of the fundamental issues facing the wholesale distribution channel. It's a dramatic improvement over previous editions of this book.

The book is also chock-full of detailed case studies and examples from a wide range of industries, both domestic and international.

Marketing Channels is a must-own for anyone who thinks strategically about marketing channels and supply chains. As both a channel strategy consultant and one of Erin's former students, I can personally vouch for the validity of their insights into channel strategy. You will not be disappointed by the quality and rigor of thinking in this book.

The book also has its own website , although there is not very much content on the site yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on marketing channel behavior.
In a business world that is constantly changing, it is absolutely critical to understand the function and behavior of marketing channels -- that is, the roles that manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers play in the channel of distribution. The businesses that understand these tenets will be able to adapt to changes in the marketplace, and those who do not, will ultimately fail.

This is the 5th edition of the original book that developed the theories that explain the structure and behavior of marketing channels. There is still nothing better. For those who understand the significance of channels, it provides a clear roadmap for the analysis of changes. For those who do not, it will explain channel member behavior and illuminate recent successes due to channel management (Walmart, Dell Computer), so that you can understand how the lessons can be applied to your business.

I recommend this book to all business managers, not just to read once, but to keep in your office and refer to often through the years in order to navigate the high seas of channel change. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on designing a channel program
It's an easy, quick read and sticks to all the pertinent information without adding unnecessary complexities. The author speaks from experience of the ins and outs of designing and managing the channel. He is able to cover strategy, tactics and theory as well as get down to the nitty gritty personal relationships and politics of being a "channel master".

If you are designing a channel program, this books is an excellent place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know about distribution channels !
This book is a rare example on how it is easy to teach the concepts, show practical examples, and summarize everything in 250 pages without relying on unnecessary phrases and words that just repeat the same idea again and again and increase the size of the book to 1000 pages. The author provides detailed explanations on the structure and functioning of distribution channels and depicts a way to effectively build a succesful channel from scratch. He goes beyond the basic concepts to show additional and important information on antitrust laws and international distribution and competition.

I would recommend reading this book and keeping it as one of your reference books to consult whenever you're up to consider changes in the distribution system that arise because of competitive pressures, changes in customer behavior, or new product launches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the begining marketer!
This book is perfect for the person who does not even know where to start. It takes you through each stage of distribution, and how to evaluate what is best for your situation. An excellent buy when you need REAL answers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know and More
Brilliant! I've been involved with industrial distribution for well over twenty years. Rolnicki has proven there is still much to be learned, considered and applied. Must reading for anyone that has anything to do with any channel of distribution.

3-0 out of 5 stars Moderately Helpful
This book has the advantage of being one of the few on CS2000+ to cover the .NET API and use .NET (C#) code examples, although it was mostly a conceptual, somewhat disjointed coverage of commerce topics and not the programming reference I'd hoped. It would have been more helpful to have seen a programming case study rather than little code "vignettes" that were shown in isolation, e.g., gift processing. One thing that surprised me was the lack of coverage of the .NET API for getting order information after it is saved in the system (see the BCL entry for "PurchaseOrder" in MS Help Docs). That said, this book was the primary reference for my porting a classic ASP 3.0 Commerce Site to CS2002...

I guess you got to have this book since it's the only(?) book available on the topic.
I'm moving faster with trying out Retail2002 solution site with Wrox 'Professional Commerce Server 2000" book.
Feeling like giving it a one star, but that wouldn't be fair since I haven't look through the whole book...

3-0 out of 5 stars Probably the Best
I purchased this book because it appeared to be the best on Commerce Server 2002 available at the time (September 2003). Unfortunately, reading what was not a re-hash of well-known concepts didn't leave me, an experienced developer, much smarter. For example, the chapter on integrating CS2002 with Content Manager Server 2002 could have been a real "how to" & "tips n' tricks" boon. Instead it merely described the basics available form MSDN.

Were's WROX when you need them? :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CS2002 book for developers
This is one of the best books I've read on any of the Microsoft servers. Unlike a lot of books, it focuses on how to develop a site using CS2002, instead of focusing on the features of the platform. The examples in the book apply to both B2C and B2B, so I'd recommend it for any development effort with CS. I found the C# and ASP.NET code samples very useful and have already used a lot of the code in sites I am working on. And it's a relief to find a Commerce Server book that doesn't spend all its time on the solution sites - this one has a little intro to them, but then gets right into developing a custom site, including creating administrative interfaces from scratch or by customizing the BizDesk. One caution - the book doesn't have a lot on installing or administering Commerce Server, but I think the help file works fine for that. Buy this book when you're ready to go beyond the simple install of the Retail site and start writing code.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice/comprehensive guide to e-commerce apps
This book is a great "one-stop shop" for how to use Commerce Server 2002.

I don't usually like MS Press books, but this one really stood out. The book contains recipes for building e-commerce applications of various sizes and considerations, especially when coupled with the Commerce Server help file (a must have). I was able to use this book on the job.

It also explains what the Commerce Server is good for as well as some of its shortcomings (e.g., the book suggests building standalone Customer Service pages for bigger web sites as opposed to using the BizDesk). The book covers areas that many books neglect even to mention: gathering business and technical requirements, software and hardware caching, data migration from
the legacy systems, integration with BizDesk, Content Management Server, and other 3rd party systems and deployment.

If you are planning to just skim through the book, the "Note" sections contain useful advice and gotcha's.

I highly recommended this book!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest, no double-talk, simple, duplicatable techniques
Dr. Joe Rubino's book "...BEEN THERE DONE THAT" really shows that he HAS been there, done that! He is believable, and you can quickly see that his success comes from a "hands on experience". INTEGRITY, TESTED AND PROVEN KNOWLEDGE, SOLID and above all HONEST business practices and methods spill from every page. This simple, easy reading book is a favorite of mine and is presented to members of my organization who are serious about building a financial empire. It teaches leaders in the industry how to partner in the success of others. A true leader isn't a "Monday morning Quarterback"...Dr. Rubino teaches you how to get IN the game and WIN! Devouring this book taught me how to create my business goals and visions and then to PLAY FULL OUT with successful momentum!

5-0 out of 5 stars No hype! Pure wisdom!
If you are seeking a book of simple, duplicatable methods to build a solid organization and income that will outlast your grandchildren, this is the one! It contiues to be used as a resource material for success! It is a favorite gift that I give to others.
Dr. Rubino's integrity and true contribution to this industry pours from every page!
This book really opened my eyes at what I was currently doing in my single daily actions. If read with the intention of applying these business building principles, you too will see where the "missings" in your business may lie, work to change them, and can experience the same thing I did...GREAT SUCCESS!

5-0 out of 5 stars It made all the difference in my MLM business
"Been There Done That" is responsible for my network marketing success. It showed me how to correct all the things I was doing wrong and assisted me in creating a personal development plan combined with a specific effective action plan. The listening chapters alone are worth many times the cost of the book. I particularly benefitted from the clear advice on how to "listen through objections" as opposed to answering them. I also purchased Dr. Rubino's tape set "10-Weeks to Network Marketing Success" which is equally awesome and goes way beyond the book. It's like taking a 10 week course with Dr. Rubino. If you want a solid foundation toward success in MLM, buy this book and the tape set as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book written on how to succeed in MLM
No hype, just sound information on how to build a huge organization. Highly recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced, no secrets.
This is a brief (as in thin), dumbed-down paperback that is mostly about prospecting. I'd say it's for the person who's never read anything about sales before, but only if you have a very limited attention span. Otherwise, there are far better books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very impressive
Firstly, I have to admit I'm a friend of the primary author David James, but I think they did a great job. Some of the negative reviews have been unfair. A book like this can't possibly be all things to all people. It doesn't cover HR, Payroll, or the core Manufacturing modules - that's why it's the "Oracle Financials Handbook", not the "Oracle Applications Handbook". It's definitely not a reference book or technical manual - you get those from Oracle Corporation anyway. What this book does do, is give an excellent background to real-world implementation of the Financials modules at a functional level. It's great for beginners and the more advanced, but I would defy even the gurus to read it and say they haven't learned from it.

I actually tried to talk David out of the whole endeavour almost three years ago, not because I didn't think he was qualified, but because I didn't think it was possible to write such a book covering all the Financials modules. I think he'd admit he underestimated just how much work it would be. That's one reason why a book like this hasn't been written before - there is just so much information to cover, unless you resort to wholesale cutting and pasting from the manuals and other people's papers.

I think the book is very impressive. I know David's skills, and I know how hard he worked to put everything together, and update it as the product evolved. I would recommend it to anyone working on a Financials implementation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Might be ok but...
I bought this book because I was trying to teach myself enough to become a Financials Developer. This still MIGHT be the right book for me. However, this is not a step by step guide to the installation. In addition, the book assumes some familiarity with accounting systems.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's not a handbook, just an brief overview
We should appreciate that this is the first book published on market talking about Oracle Financials. However, this is the book that contains only general introduction. It doesn't have any detail information either for functional users or technical persons. As an Oracle Financial developer with many years of experience, I don't get any useful information out of it. May be it's good for somebody who don't know Oracle Financials at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading Once
I must appreciate the efforts of David and Graham to come out with such a book. Those who are used to read Oracle Apps Help and other documentation may not find some thing appealing. The authors have tried to mix functional concepts and some technical info with practical Do's and Don'ts. So may be they are not able to satisfy both to the fullest. This obviously is not possible in single book (in first edition too). Still I would expect the authors to include more of Tips that are not documented and extend the content to include manufacturing, HR and CRM to meants meant for Oracle Applications. This book is definitely worth reading once for all levels of professionals !

2-0 out of 5 stars Needed a case study approach for Ora Fin. A long way to go.
Oracle Financials implementation is not a trivial task. It is a major cost for any organizations' IT department. This books tries to break the ice on Oracle Finacials compiled information. It is the only book that exists in the field of Oracle Financials. The enormity of this tasks makes it impossible to club all the knowledge one would expect from a handbook. However, it does try to be insightful for ar modules as opposed to explanation of other modules. It is the courage of the authors to delve on such an elusive topic that deserves a special mention. What we need for an implementation is case studies with very particular code specific to that situation. I guess for each module in Oracle finacials one could write a book and that is what is required. Or if we try to slice and dice it from different perspective. Let us assume we try to categorize it from Industry line perspective. One for Energy kind of industry, one for production kind of industry, and so on the classification will become endless what is required is the process identification in a business ( for instance invoicing, billing) and then trying to explain the best practices and implementation for that process. The purpose of this book is introduction to Financials and a brief outlook at each module and project management. I think we need a module-detailed book with processes implementation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wave of the future--The New Professionals
If you are contemplating getting into a MLM company, are sitting on the fence and need just a little bit of convincing, read The New Professionals by James King and Charles Robinson.

A lot of myths and misconceptions abound in this industry, these two gentlemen offer the facts. Network marketing is growing by leaps and bounds and The New Professionals explains why.

4-0 out of 5 stars The network is King . . .
The New Professional makes clear the evolution of multilevel and direct marketing. Like many folks, I had a pretty dim view of the overly aggressive sales tactics and misleading meeting agendas that I ran into with many of the earlier direct marketing efforts. Now I see that things have changed for the better - much better! Inventory is not in your home, it's not in someone else's garage, it is at the distributor and easily obtained through the internet. Supply chain management is superb in these new companies.

For example, King and Robinson provide statistics to show why direct marketing is a robust and very efficient model for introducing some products into the market place. And, they show why the type of person involved in network marketing today is truly a professional: "Of key interest, the research found 'successful (direct and network marketing) sales people have a communication style or social style that encourages the building of relationships with their customers . . . The most successful sales leaders have a combination of relationship and task orientation' (in their communication styles)."

Network Marketing and multilevel marketing are synonymous terms. They are defined by a business model which pays commissions on multiple levels of the sales organization. Network Marketing/Selling differs from Direct Selling in that Network Marketing:

1. Focuses on relationships rather than on closing the sale or booking an order
2. Focuses on information sharing
3. Independent business owner (IBO)
4. Commissions on multiple levels of sales (not just retail of the IBO)

The role of the network marketing channel is to accelerate the movement of products using the most efficient distribution technique: word-of-mouth communication.

This is an excellent book to bring you up to date on the network marketing phenominon and to understand the new business models (yes, there are many).

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for New and Current Network Marketers
If your considering Network Marketing as a career move then this should be your first text book for learning what you need to know first about the business. I have also attended Dr. Charles King's Networking Marketing Certification course at the University of Illinois @ Chicago with equal enthusiasm. If you take anything from this review, understand that this book was written by a Harvard Grad and tenured Professor at UIC who spent much time researching the business. It is a great book that is required reading especially if you're new to the business of Network Marketing.
Last of all, don't listen to fools who scoff at this book or the Industry, unless of course you wish to remain a slave to your employer and retire a slave to the Governments program.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst books I have ever read
This book seems to be a commissioned marketing book for network marketing. It reads like a sales brochure and contained very little information that was of value to me. It seems likely that it was funded by a bunch of MLM companies, including Prepaid legal, Excel and Herbalife, among others.

Don't believe the other customer reviews, and don't waste your money on this book. There must be better books out there than this one.

I am also shocked at the number of people who endorse this book on the back cover. I wonder how many of them actually read it.

One of the worst books I have ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Century, New Biz World, New Money
If you are one of the many that are trying to keep up with the ever changing face of the business world, you need to read this book. In the last five years, I have personally experienced more changes and more growth in my own business life that in all the other 25 years put together. The bottom line is that things are rapidly changing - and we have two choices - embrace the changes and learn to use them to our advantage - or resist the changes and get left behind. While multi-level marketing is not new and not all multi-level companies are created equal, the industry is certainly emerging as one that offers some of the best opportunities for people to get started as independent business owners with a relatively small investment, especially for those who might never have had any other way to achieve financial independence. For some time now, I have had first hand knowledge of the money that can be earned by the small business owner, many of whom were not college educated and were not your straight A, honor roll student. There are countless thousands that have invested heavily in higher educations to obtain skills to get "good paying jobs" that will never come near the income levels working as an employee that can be achieved as an independent business owner. If you have looked down your noise in times past at "multi-level marketing", take another look!! After all, it wasn't but a few years back that most of us had never even heard of the internet, much less used it in every day life!! ... Read more

Book Description

In The Referral of a Lifetime, author Tim Templeton frames a powerful plan for cultivating clients and customers in a fable about businesswoman Susie McCumber, who feels increasingly like a failure. A friend refers her to the mysterious Mr. Highground, who introduces her to four successful people. They show her how they transformed their businesses and their lives by determining how others view them and how they view themselves as both human beings and businesspeople. Each of the four represents a "type" in this schema - from the "relational/business" type who puts the relationship first but thinks strategically when the talk turns to business, to the "business/business" type, who avoids relationships unless they work to a business advantage. Templeton shows how understanding one's type allows one to showcase strengths while improving weak areas in this simple, easy-to-use guide to success in business and in life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for business people who value relationships
What a fantastic book and easy read! I recommend this book at each of my seminars with financial planners who want to grow, value relationships, realize that it's not about working to death and want to have more fun as they build their success.
It's one of my top 10 books ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars Implementation made easy
To whom it may concern: Recently, I attended a 1 hour presentation in San Diego, California put on by Tim Templeton providing an overview of his book "The Referral of a LifeTime". The presentation generated a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for me, which led me to read the book two days later in entirety. I have a very successful financial planning practice, 18 years of experience and an income well into the 6 digit level. I mention this not only to give you an overview of who I am but to also let you know that I am convince that if we employ the strategies discussed in the book we will generate a bunch of referred business, leading to us helping a large number of individuals and leading of course to much higher compensation for our services. We primarily deal with high income earning individuals and business owners (typical client makes well above $500,000) and with people who have large estates. The book was not only well written, easy to read and hard to put down but provided a simplified system for implementation. To many people who author books of this nature do not provide an easy to implement system, hence, too many readers never actual apply what they have learned. I liken the appendix to an easy to follow outline that provides plenty of substance. Mr. Templeton is to be commended for his insight. We will take our business to the next level through implementation and that will start with us purchasing 8 copies for our staff to read, highlight and summarize for idea shring in our regular staff meetings. Michael Manning of Hamilton, Manning & Associates, LLC

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Read for Beginner, Refresher for Veteran
I perform sales consulting and training, and am a big believer that building your business through repeats and referrals is the key to success. Therefore, I was already in agreement with the purpose of the book before I began reading. However, I am always searching for new angles to convey these core sales principles to proteges. This book made an impact on the way I may deliver this message in the future.

The author doesn't try bore the reader with idealistic philosphy, or impress academia with research and statistics. The book is written in easy-to-read, easy-to-follow reality, using worldly examples by a main "character" to teach. The "250-by-250" rule explained is worth its weight in gold.

This book is a must-read for those in their first two years in sales, and a terrific resource for veterans who need to refresher, or a new outlook, on the principles of referrals.Well written!

5-0 out of 5 stars The end of cold calls, the beginning of consistent referrals
We're always looking for a system for everything. Plan the work, then work the plan. If you don't know where you're going, any road will do. If you fail to plan, you should plan to fail. It's all true. So how come we are so bad at following a system?

We have to believe it will work, not hope it will. Systems are usually simple, but rarely easy. That's the catch. We know what we should do, but we give up before it has a chance to work.

The best time to try something new and innovative is when the status quo isn't working. What have you got to lose? Move past the things that are holding you back.

Like many people, I hate cold calling. Those who are good at handling rejection can make a go of it. To them, it's a numbers game. Make 100 calls, schedule 5 meetings, close 1 sale. Zig Ziglar is a popular cold-calling sales guru.

If cold calling makes you cringe and dread the day's work, this book was written for you. Tim Templeton provides a systematic approach that anyone can implement. It will work if you have the following criteria.

1) You want to work with the gifts and personality you already have, rather than changing who you are for conducting business.

2) You are willing to dedicate yourself to the process for a specific amount of time - no more, no less.

You'll see some results almost immediately, but you'll need about 10 weeks to fully implement the system. You'll see breakthrough, sustainable results in about four months. That may seem like a lot of time to invest, but when you can jump-start your career so dramatically, it isn't really a lot to go through. And you aren't working the system all day every day. If you can invest two hours a day, you can change your life.

Here's how it works.

1) Discover what type of personality you are and decide to use it for the greatest benefit

2) Build a list of 250 people who know you, and use technology to manage it

3) Offer your assistance to people, and help them whenever you can

4) Connect with them consistently, personally, and systematically (The book will show you how easy it is)

5) Let them know how you work, and how they can refer people to you, who are in need of your services

The key is to NOT ask for a sale until you have built up personal credibility with a contact. That's where the systematic, personal, consistent communication works its magic. In the end, clients and prospects will often call you, or at least welcome your call with open arms. What could be better than that?

That's all I'll give up. Buy the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun read filled with excellent information
Tim Templeton's has written a book that is simply a "must buy", a story that is a "must read", and a system that is a "must implement". The information is clearly described and explained in a very easy to read story. It could be the thing that turns your business around using resources you already have but are probably not utilizing!

I am a business owner, and as such am constantly on the prowl for ways to make my life easier, more efficient, and of course, more profitable! Having read hundreds of books on marketing and business development, I quickly recognized this book as one of the best. Here's some of the reasons why:
-It's fun and easy to read (most business books take a while to sort through let alone complete).
-The system is self-evident and easy to understand. You will wish you read this book the day you starting doing business!
-You already have (or can very readily attain) all of the resources you'll need to implement the system.
-It really just makes sense, and anyone can do it!

Do yourself a favor and buy this book today. Then get busy using the system. It's that simple. So get to it!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for B2B Salespeople too!
This book is well worth the cover price. It will make you think about every single word you put on your marketing material. I encourage sales professionals to read it too. Reason: So many of the Salespeople I consult with are responsible to write their own letters and are sending numerous emails to clients. The more you can understand the art of persuasion and word power, the better your sales!

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong in hands on advice, low in hype
One of the few business books I have not regreted buying. Will give it to my marketing communications manager, fair and events manager, etc to read the respective sections. The part about "lazy" copywriting is especially amusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Business-to-Business Direct Marketing
Get the jump on the competition! Guaranteed! This book is a proven way to boost the sales and increase the bottom line of any business! I have the track record to prove it.In the summer of 2000, it helped me close deals with three b-to-b clients. It also, after reading it five times in two months, enabled me to increase the sales and visibility of three other clients. And I did it all within the space of about five months. In no uncertain terms, the book helped me to increase the response rate to a number of direct marketing campaigns for myself and both service and produt oriented businesses. In this hefty volume, Bly explains the differences between consumer and b-to-b marketing. He shows the relation between "features" and "benefits" in copy as well as the effective use of technical info to sell various products in catalogs, ads, brochures and direct mail.Bly is the preeminent authority on b-to-b marketing who successfully writes for some of the largest businesses in the United States. His wealth of knowledge shines through.Besides showing you how to sell through direct marketing, he explains in detail how to measure and track your results. He gives tips on testing and explains what you should do before, during and after a campaign. His information on technical writing and selling technical products is especially useful, given the fact that he is an engineer. If you are serious about starting or improving a b-to-b direct marketing campaign, and you want details about the vital tools and mechanics of marketing, this is the book you should have.Be sure to get it before your competition does.

5-0 out of 5 stars BtB Marketing covers more topics than expected
This book was a good buy. It covers all areas and medium where you can get in touch with potential customers (ads, mail, flyer, catalogs, sales brochures etc.). Mr. Bly always emphasizes the importance of including direct contact information. The book is full of useful hints, checklists, and examples of successful direct marketing measures.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Will Get You Results!
Many business people setting up shop these days desire to market their products and services to a variety of prospective customers, whether broad-based or targeting a specific audience, according to the sales objectives they plan to accomplish. Often overlooked as potential customers are fellow business people who are very much like themselves.

Robert Bly has written Business To Business Direct Marketing to offer a serious look at targeting other businesses. Special attention is needed to target fellow business people. Business-to-business and business-to-consumer marketing requires two very different approaches. Bly points out that businesses must buy a variety of merchandise to keep their businesses operating and producing, whereas consumers are not obliged to buy anything and everything that hits the marketplace shelves. This is a key point for us to remember!

A perfect example of business-to-business marketing can be seen in the promotional incentive item industry. Thousands of companies and individual distributors sell those rubbery squeezable tension toys that come in hundreds of shapes, sizes, and colors. There is a tension toy for any company that wants to promote itself and someone has to make and sell these items! Anyone who attends tradeshows and job fairs can count the number of companies handing out those colored balls, sharks, animals, bananas, trucks, cellphones, and computers with company contact information stamped on them. I've got many of them adorning my office to remind me of the companies I do business with (or would like to!).

Bly provides a wealth of workable solutions to effectively market businesses through traditional and hi-tech methods such direct mail advertising, polished correspondence, brochures, newsletters, press releases, speaking engagements, multimedia presentations, telemarketing, and the Internet. All of these require talent and commitment. Bly will help prepare you to face these challenges!

This is a heavy hitting book - definitely not for beginners. This book is recommended for companies and business consultants who have already established themselves in the marketplace who want to promote themselves as truly professional. This is top-notch advice from someone who knows his business. Do you know how to effectively market your business? This book will get you results! ... Read more

When I first ordered Direct Marketing it sat untouched on my desk for several weeks. At two inches thick (I measured it), I was dreading another boring tome that took a thousand words to say what could have been covered in ten. When I finally cracked the cover, I was pleasantly surprised.

Not only is Direct Marketing devoid of fluff, every word is packed with the insight of a gentleman who has obviously earned his knowledge from the school of hard knocks. As I continued to read the fourth edition of Direct Marketing I found that it is more than a book on direct mail, it's an essential read on marketing in general:

* Nash makes it easy to understand the importance and mechanics of marketing measurement and metrics.

* While emphasizing the accountability and predictability of direct marketing, Nash does not discount general marketing knowledge.

* Nash makes planning practical and concise. The chapter on marketing plans is the best coverage of the topic that I've seen.

* The Internet and other interactive vehicles are fully embraced.

In short, if you're a marketing professional, buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive, complete, timeless
Mr. Nash, I love this book. I say "love" instead of "loved" because it's not a book you read once. It has become a valuable resource for our company. Thank you.
