From the author: Mutual funds enable small, less experienced investors to hold diversified portfolios of stocks and bonds at relatively low costs. Though the mutual fund market is competitive in many ways, fees can vary substantially for what are essentially identical products. This may be due to bundling of services, but it may also reflect some confusion on the part of less experienced investors, which inhibits comparative shopping among funds. Suggested reforms for improved fee disclosure seek to make fees more transparent for less informed investors and should improve competitive discipline among funds.

From the supplier: Banks need to make every attempt to tell mutual fund customers that their investments are not protected by deposit insurance. Most customers do not read the prospectus during the sales stage, which makes it important for the sales representative to inform the customer of their investment liability. Some banks have taken out advertisements in their local paper to let customers know the risks of investing in mutual funds.

From the supplier: Amutual fund marketing strategy that not only considers the short-term income needs of customers but also factors their long-term investment needs is bound to succeed. Such a strategy should make bank depositors aware of potential financial hurdles in the future and educate them on how to address these difficulties. Under this marketing program, bank employees are not supposed to immediately offer mutual funds as an investment instrument for bank depositors. Instead, they should help customers study their long-range financial standing in order to determine what investment is appropriate. If mutual funds are found to meet the investment needs of customers, only then should a mutual fund pitch be made. This comprehensive marketing strategy, incorporating investment advice for the long-term financial needs of customers, makes banks more competitive in the mutual funds arena.

From the supplier: People who invest in mutual funds through banks are as knowledgeable about their investment risk as people who purchase the funds through other entities, according to a survey of 2,000 mutual fund investors. The Securities and Exchange Commission and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, which jointly commissioned the survey, said the findings are surprising because bank customers are less educated and wealthy than people who invest in mutual funds outside of banks.

From the supplier: Regulations prevent banks from using aggressive marketing campaigns to sell mutual funds. Banks are not allowed to sponsor, underwrite or distribute mutual funds, but they are allowed to serve as advisors for proprietary funds and to make funds available through alternative channels. Customer referrals and existing customers are the main sources of mutual fund revenue for banks. Investment representatives have more success by informing customers about products than by selling mutual funds aggressively.
