2-0 out of 5 stars unimpressive
i realize the book says for dummies in the title BUT first off some of the things the book states about dreamweaver are not true and are not possible - i didnt open the cd because from reading the book you knew most of the cd was demos which you would have to take off of your computer in a month anyway - the only information i got from this book was basic business start up legal information - it kept referring to information i am looking for but it states it is not covered in this book but the small business internet for dummies - after reading this book cover to cover though i am very hesitant to purchase another book by this author - the information i need is probably just referenced to and really in a third book anyway - overall i was very unimpressed by this book

only buy this book if you are BRAND NEW to the internet - like you just got online for the first time last week and think maybe making money online might be for you THIS BOOK IS FOR BEGINNING BEGINNERS ONLY

5-0 out of 5 stars Starting An Online Business For Dummies
This book is truly incredible. I cannot even absorb all of the information in it! This is a MUST HAVE for ANYONE even thinking about starting an on line business. This is such an easy read and you can go on line and check out all the different web sites he has listed in the book. There is more information in this book than I ever thought possible. It is EXTREMELY helpful and written very well. It is the kind of book that you keep on your desk to constantly look up things. This is the best investment I have made in a long time. = )

5-0 out of 5 stars a reader
this is a very good book for beginer and other as well. step by step, easy to follow, important notices, great advices and more.

1-0 out of 5 stars O.K. for Beginners
Like most of the Dummies books, this book is designed for the complete beginners, i.e. people who have absolutely no business and Web experience.

The book gives such advices as hiring a technical consultant, writing a business plan, manage your finance, etc. Wow :-()

It's better to buy several books that focus on different areas of the business. Get one for business plan, one for web marketing, one for negotiation, one for legal guide, one for accounting, etc. There are many good software programs out there that do all these now too. All of them would be better than a dummies book like this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I could've asked for!
I am so happy that I chose this book out of all of the others available. It is so easy to understand & packed with information that all of us starting an online business needs. I am one to fold page corners of pages that have info that is very important to me. You should see how many there are!! It is an excellent resource of info & I am very grateful to have found it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Reader Beware -- More Relgion than Good Information
Frankly, I'd like my money back from the author or Amazon. Had I known that I was purchasiing over 15 pages of the author's religious thinking out of a 168-page book, I would not havebothered. While 'Notary Signing Agent' is a 'self-published' book and the author, therefore, has the right to put forth her religious beliefs, she or Amazon should note a disclaimer for the buyer -- that they are buying an informational and religious book. I like my information without religious packaging. Has Caveat Emptor no place in the modern busines world?
I e-mailed the author to inform her of my thoughts on 'using' the consumer. Three months later, no anwser.
As to the substance of the book, I think any serious business person would recognize 'fill' when they see it. For example, pages 104 to 115 cover 'How to Set Up A Title Company'. Really this has 'nada' to do with notary signing. Fill, is fill. You know it when you see it; but to pay for it is another matter.
In sum, the book is (1) 'switch and bait' for the consumer -- you buy a book on becoming a notary signing agent and you get warnings on the "The Existence and Location of Hell" and quotations from the Bible on "Admit You Are A Sinner"
(2) poorly written (see the author's Model Letters --e.g, page 100). I'd advise people not to send these poorly written letters out to serious business people
(3)narrow -- e.g., significant mention is made of only one national notary association -- there is little on the plethora of other notary associations which the newcomer notary might want to learn about.
I'd like my money back and an apology.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for notary info, but the religious stuff is useless!
The content of the book with respect to the notary subject is moderately helpful. It has some good hints and tips.I was surprised that the book has to include basic concepts such as, "be kind to your customers."I bought this book in digital format not realizing that the security settings would not let me print more than 10 pages a week.I was very disappointed because I prefer to highlight things, write notes in margins as I study a text.I would have bought the hard copy if I had known about this security setting.

The main thing that bothers me about this book is all of the Christian references. There is a Christian quote at the beginning of each section. These quotes didn't help me since I am not into religion, so I ignored them. The end of the book contains a section titled "Victoria Ring's Statement of Faith".This section is completely irrelevant to the book's subject and it just made me MAD!!!How dare the author state, "The only way to escape Hell is to admit you are a sinner and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ to save you...".The author is being completely selfish and rude to assert her personal beliefs about religion in a book that has nothing to do with religion. It really PISSES ME OFF when religious freaks use any opportunity to assert their arrogance and tell the world that their views/beliefs/perspective is the only correct view! This infers that the rest of the world is wrong...what about Hinduism and Buddhism - or those people who are Atheists???Including this religious section was very unprofessional and a waste of my time!

5-0 out of 5 stars The ABC's of Loan Signing
This is the "definitive" book on this topic.I have been a Realtor and a Loan Officer in the past and I had heard of Loan Signing Agents but this book fleshes out the profession and gives a greater understanding of what's involved.I have seen and read other books on loan signing but they were for people already in the business. This book opens the door and gives you and introduction to the business and a working knowledge of the business.

When you finish this book you are ready to begin working. It should be called the "ABC's of Loan Signing" or the "Quick Start Loan Signing Guide!"

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I Ever Read for Notary Signing Agents!
I recently purchased "How to Start, Operate and Market a Freelance Notary Signing Agent Business".I have to tell you that I am a Realtor, Licensed Title Agent , Instructor at PACE Institute and Certified Paralegal in the State of Pennsylvania, and I think this book is GREAT!It not only explains the loan documents, which by the way, when I'm attending settlements where some attorneys are present, they let me run the show.I have been doing this for quite some time, and I just wanted to let you know what a valuable reference book this is for someone new in the business. ... Book Description

This authoritative and thorough guide includes everything that made previous editions of Enterprise JavaBeans the singlemust-havebook for EJB developers: the author's solid grasp on the complexities of EJBs coupled with his succinct, easy-to-follow style; hundreds of clear, practical examples; adept coverage the key concepts EJBs ; and diagrams to illustrate the concepts presented. The fourth edition also includes everything you need to get up to speed quickly on the changes wrought by EJB version 2.1, an architecture overview, information on resource management and primary services, design strategies, and XML deployment descriptors. In this edition, we're adding an EJB workbook for JBoss 4.0.The workbook shows how to deploy all of the examples on the JBoss 4.0 application server. It addresses an important problem with EJB: deploying the software on a server can be extremely difficult.JBoss is an open source project that has become the most widely used J2EE application server.Author Richard Monson-Haefel provides just what you need to know to harness the complexity of EJBs: practical, precise, usable examples--large enough to test key concepts but still small enough to be comprehensible--taken apart and explained in the detail you need to deploy those principles in other situations. If you work with EJBs--or want to--this book will earn a favored spot on your bookshelf. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for jumping in
All you need to jump in, for more details go for 'Special Edition Using Enterprise JavaBeans 2.0', rare case when O'Reilly's book is not a head above the rest. 'Special edition' is deepier and a better choice for advanced programmers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for new and intermediate EJB developers
This book is aim at Java developers wishing to learn the fundamentals of Enterprise Javabeans.
Knowledge of Java and JDBC is assumed.

If you ask to any EJB developer which are the best books about EJB, many will respond with two;
Mastering EJB (Ed Roman) and this one. Mastering EJB also covered JDBC, RMI and other topics.
The 1st and 2nd editions of Enterprise Javabeans (Richard Monson-Haefel, Orielly) focus specifically on
understanding and using EJB. Both are very good and worth reading.

The book is made up of 17 chapters, covering the all basics, intermediate topics and some advanced.
The first chapter introduces distributed object architectures and component models.
This chapter gives the reader an understanding of RMI and CORBA, the technologies that EJB was originally built on.

Chapters 2 and 3 present the EJB architecture and the main services provided by the architecture.
These chapters are very important to read because they cover essentially what is an EJB,
the advantages of EJB and a few differences between EJB 1.1 and EJB 2.0.
If you have read either of the previous two editions, you will like the EJB 2.0 specifics
(e.g. Message Driven Beans) introduced in these chapters. A TravelAgent EJB is used as an example through out chapters 2 and 3.

Chapter 4 gives the reader their first introduction to EJB source code.
We recommend you download the workbook and source code examples (...)
Currently only Web Logic 6.1 and Web Sphere 4.0 versions are available.

Chapter 5 present Session and Entity beans with a quick overview of JNDI and Java RMI-IIOP.
The chapter focuses on the Remote and Local (EJB 2.0) client APIs.
The author also shows how to redesign an EJB to use a Local Interface instead of a Remote interface.
What we really like are the code snippets used to demonstrate the theory.
Chapters 6 and 7 go into detail about Entity Beans (CMP 2.0).
Chapter 8 covers EJB QL, similar to SQL but designed to work with the abstract persistence schema of EJB 2.0 Entity Beans.
Again, there are lots of code examples and helpful class diagrams.
Chapter 9 provides a useful guide to differences between CMP in EJB 1.1 and EJB 2.0.
Chapter 10 and 11 describe BMP and Entity-Container contracts (primary key class).
These are explained quite clearly considering these are not simple topics.
Chapter 12 focuses on explaining Stateless and Stateful Session Beans.

Chapter 13 presents Message-Driven Beans. After an overview of JMS, a ReservationProcessor EJB is described.
This chapter shows sending messages between client and message bean.
Chapter 14 covers transactions with some example EJB code.

In chapter 15, the author gives some design strategies that should be followed.
These include passing objects by value and implementing a common interface.
Chapter 16 is all about XML deployment descriptors. The last chapter (17) gives an idea of what to expect in future releases.

There has been alot added to this book since the previous editions. We recommend this book to all developers that would like
to learn about EJB step by step. It would have been nice to have more EJB Design Patterns, however, there is enough in this book
to keep most developers happy. Go buy it now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Coverage of a Large Subject
I started out knowing very little about EJB's when I picked up this book. I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed!

The first three chapters give a 10,000 foot view about the role of EJB's in J2EE. Bean lifecycles are covered, container interaction, deploytment processes, etc. is all covered in a general and friendly manner. A little bit of code is presented to illustrate key points and help you start thinking about how to write code.

The chapters following really drill down into the guts of entity, session (state and stateless), and message driven EJBs. Simple code examples are presented and taken apart, with detailed explanation about why certain things are the way they are, and how things work. Outstanding theory here! You get down into the nitty gritty about deployment descriptors, state diagrams, the works.

There are also nice reference Appendices providing state transition diagrams, API references, etc.

What impressed me most about this book is the author's careful distinction between EJB 1.1 and EJB2.0 specifications, including code samples of each, and the raw level of detail about how beans work.

The bad part about this book is it assumes you know a lot of other fundamental technologies such as XML, JNDI, and JMS. I highly recommend you have references available on these technologies during reading if you're trying to learn the big picture at the same time. People who are really into code examples and not theory may also be a little disappointed by the simplicity of the examples given.

All in all a great buy!

1-0 out of 5 stars Horribly Writen, useless information
I buy discount software books whenever I can, and I picked this up for 8 or 9 bucks somewhere. Man, what a waste. I learned more about EJB from SUN's website and from reading on the internet. The examples were useless, and the chapters were disjointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars great!!!
This book was my first exposure to EJB/J2EE and I have found it to be very helpfull. I have read it from cover to cover and I am about to use the knowledge I obtained to rewrite our existing thick client to a JBoss client/server.

I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I was a "travel agent" for GTI and just didn't get the support I needed and found the benefits non-existent. But I found out that I wanted to become a real travel agent. I bought both books from Amazon.com and found How to Start a Home Based Travel Agency the best book for anyone wanting to start a serious career selling travel. The other book is good if you want to join GTI or organizations like that. I didn't find many errors in it at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book
While there are typos in the book, How to Start a Home Based Travel Agency is an excellent book that helped me make the transition from store front to home based. After 7 years as a retail travel agent, I was forced to go home-based. I looked at both this book and the other one (Home Based Travel Agent) and found this one to represent the information necessary to make the transition. Tom and Joanie Ogg are well known and respected in the travel business and their expertise goes without rival.

Do yourself a favor, this is the book to buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Editing and Terrible Writing
I purchased this book and "Home-Based Travel Agent" by Monaghan. Tom Ogg's book is very, very poorly editted (tons of typos, bad grammar, etc.) It also has limited info about starting a Travel business. Most of the text is generic and would apply to starting ANY business--not specifically travel. I was disappointed with this purchase and returned the book. The other book bu Monaghan is much better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Look again
I found this book completely unhelpfull and a waste of money. I know nothing about the travel industry and looked to this book as my introduction into it. I am more confused than ever and now have no intention of entertaining the idea of opening my own home-based agency. Thanks but no thanks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tons of insightful information, but very poorly edited.
I read through this book cover to cover to learn more about the travel and home based travel agency industry. The information contained within was extremely useful, and provided a terrific overview of the steps necessary to start you own business. Perhaps it made it seem a little too easy to become successful as a home based travel agent, but the ingredients were all there. This included setting up your business, creating a marketing plan, hooking up to the travel provider network, and training involved.

However, I am only giving this book 3 stars because the editing job for this book seemed non-existent. Lack of commas throughout, many typos, blank lines in the middle of paragraphs, grammatical errors, and other basic editing tasks were obviously not done. I can't imagine why this level of polish was left out. If you can ignore this then the book is well worth it for the knowledge gained.

I also wanted to note that the authors promote their own affiliated web sites a little too often throughout the text which wasn't necessary. A more unbiased set of Web links would have been more useful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How To Sell Big-Time On Ebay
This is the book that provides needed information if you wish to sell on eBay as a business. This book gives you specific business models of real people who are making money on eBay. This book gives you a true and real sense of what it is like to make money on eBay, perhaps as a full-time millionaire seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
In my plight to learn more about making money on eBay, I'd purchased several books on the subject. This was the best one out of the four that I had bought. It gives specific business models of real people making money on eBay instead of listings of what to do/not to do or theories like in other eBay books. This book gives you a real sense in exactly what needs to be done if you want to become a Million-Dollar Power Seller on eBay.The rest of the "get rich on eBay" books pale in comparison! If you want to make money on eBay, this book is a MUST HAVE, MUST READ!

4-0 out of 5 stars Ebay Millionaire by Joyner
This book will assist you in crafting optimal strategies for making money on Ebay. For instance, the author describes how old inventory items can sell for big profits. There are strategies to drop ship directly from manufacturers without ever handling the merchandise. The drop ship directly from the manufacturer to the
customer obviates the necessity for carrying inventory and incurring large storage costs. Customarily, the manufacturer
sends out the order under your name so that your customers
believe that they are buying from you.

Auction feedback is an invaluable tool for Ebay sellers. Perhaps,
the best source of permanent customers is the group you have sold
to already. People who have bought from you are the best source of future sales because they are familiar with the quality product delivered and the particulars of the selling experience. This book is not a cure-all; however, it will assist you in maximizing the Ebay selling experience. My experience in selling tells me that it is to your advantage to answer customer questions on a timely basis and to deliver a product on time
and in good condition. This work also covers masse selling to
large groups of customers. It is a solid value for the price
charged. There is a word of advice. The million doesn't come over
a single night. Much work is required to start up the operation,
identify/service customers and manage the enterprise. Ebay
selling ( as any selling) requires constant attention and
nurturing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well-written look at eBay excellence
Ever wondered how to get rich by selling on eBay? Well, this book is filled with real-life business success stories of people who literally have made millions selling on eBay.

You may not join them after reading this book, but you can get some valuable online selling advice, even if you just use eBay to clean out your closet.

The book is divided into separate vignettes, each focusing on a different Titanium PowerSeller. These are well-researched and are interesting stories of risk and reward, even for readers who don't know how to turn on a computer. I'd definitely recommend "The eBay Millionaire."

Here is the bestselling guide that created a new game plan for marketing in high-tech industries. Crossing the Chasm has become the bible for bringing cutting-edge products to progressively larger markets. It's essential reading for anyone with a stake in the world's most exciting marketplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Valuable Now Than Ever Before
Crossing the Chasm (1991) and Inside the Tornado (1995) should be read in combination. Having just re-read both, I consider them even more valuable now than when they were first published. Chasm "is unabashedly about and for marketing within high-tech enterprises." It was written for the entire high tech community "to open up the marketing decision making during this [crossing] period so that everyone on the management team can participate in the marketing process." In Chasm, Moore isolates and then corrects what he describes as a "fundamental flaw in the prevailing high-tech marketing model": the notion that rapid mainstream growth could follow continuously on the heels of early market success.

In his subsequent book, Inside the Tornado, Moore's use of the "tornado" metaphor correctly suggests that turbulence of unprecedented magnitude has occurred within the global marketplace which the WWW and the Internet have created. Moreover, such turbulence is certain to intensify. Which companies will survive? Why? I have only one (minor) quarrel with the way these two books have been promoted. True, they provide great insights into marketing within the high technology industry. However, in my opinion, all e-commerce (especially B2B and, even more importantly, B2B2C) will be centrally involved in that industry. Moreover, the marketing strategies suggested are relevant to virtually (no pun intended) any organization -- regardless of size or nature -- which seeks to create or increase demand for what it sells...whatever that may be. I consider both books "must reading." Those who share my high regard for one or both are strongly urged to read Moore's more recent business classic, Living on the Fault Line.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic in business analysis
This book works best when read in combination with Inside the Tornado. These two books have also been updated and integrated into Moore's latest, Living on the Fault Line. Crossing the Chasm, like the other books, is about and for marketing within high-tech enterprises. Moore's view is that high tech products require marketing strategies that differ from those in other industries. The "chasm" is the gap between sales to technically literate buyers and mainstream buyers. Moore's book provides well thought out strategies for bridging this gap. Moore disputes the prevailing view that rapid mainstream growth can follow continuously from early market success. Quite different strategies are needed and Moore provides them, illustrated by examples of companies and products that have successfully crossed the chasm. This is well worth reading, though if you read only one book by Moore, make it his latest, Living on the Fault Line.

4-0 out of 5 stars a high tech business classic
Let's face it -- 80% of business books are pure garbage.

This is one of the gems. One that should sit on your office bookshelf.

Moore came up with an interesting take on how high tech businesses must move from early adopters to the mainstream and the challenges involved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, even if you think you already understand
Long established as a classic, the drawing depicting the different classes of customers and their adoption rates are commonly used in the industry. I personally thought I already understood it, just from osmosis. However, reading the book taught me more about the characteristics of those customers, how you gain penetration into their markets, and most importantly how you manage a team and produce a product into those markets.

There are also lessons in there about establishing a beachhead and how to choose your target customer that dovetail nicely into some more modern work around persona identification in software development and the need to identify just one target persona for your application at a time. This is a great marketing book -- even if some of the specific company examples are somewhat dated -- whose concepts readily translate into not only management but directly into product development and vision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really changed my life about technical sales
There are some rare books that create revelations, and in my professional career, this is one of them. Now it is obvious why I often failed to connect with "Pragmatists" and other customers, who didn't seem to get it like the other "Visionaries" and "Technofiles" I had little trouble selling to.

I was the one who didn't get it!

In addition, marketing and sales books can be such dull tomes, but Moore's professional experience and accesible manner makes for an interesting read. His "lingo" has been picked up but many professionals, to the point where you need to read Moore just to be up to date. But the good news is, you will be much more effective in technical sales and marketing after reading this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Brewing Up a Business is an entertaining, enlightening first-person account of author Sam Calagione's nontraditional success as an entrepreneur. Starting out with a home brewing kit cobbled together from used kegs, Calagione turned his entrepreneurial dream into a reality. Relying on unique brews, lots of loving technique, and hard work, Calagione built Dogfish Head Craft Beer into America's fastest growing brewery. Without the benefit of an advertising budget, Dogfish went from a tiny operation in Delaware to one of the country's most popular craft breweries, distributed in 29 states and four countries. As revenues grow at lightning speed-an increase of 105 percent in 2003-Dogfish's success is the result of dreaming big, working hard, and thinking unconventionally. With real lessons on entrepreneurship and success from a real entrepreneur, as well as practical ideas on nontraditional marketing, this is a business story that will open readers' eyes to the unquantifiable benefits of thinking differently. ... Book Description

This book helps experienced Java developers to build high-value mobile applications that take advantage of enterprise IT infrastructures. It also helps developers to add mobility features to existing enterprise solutions. It does not repeat the same basic J2ME/MIDP API tutorial covered by many other books.

After a comprehensive analysis of the landscape and trends of the J2ME platform, the book uses the source code of several award-winning, real world applications to illustrate the design, architecture and best practices of end-to-end smart mobile solutions. The comparison of competing application paradigms could prove invaluable to architects.

Then the book focuses on four most important enterprise application areas: Converged messaging (email, IM, mobile P2P as well as enterprise messaging middleware); data management (mobile and backend relational databases), ubiquitous integration (mobile Web services) and advanced security (J2ME cryptography). The book covers more than 30 commercial and open source tools from over 10 leading vendors (including IBM, Oracle, Sun, Sybase, Enhydra and much more). The detailed analysis help developers to choose the right tools. Over 300 code listings from sample applications (available for download from the book web site) are used to illustrate the application designs, coding techniques and third-party tool usages. This is a must-have book for enterprise mobile developers and architects. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great survey of mobile technologies
I go to Java Users Groups (yes, I'm struggling to get in touch with my inner geek) once every two or three months. Sometimes there's an engaging speaker, but most of the time the fellow up front looks like he's just swallowed a hot pepper, speaks like he has a permanent stutter, and answers questions like I'm speaking Greek. (I'm not making fun; I had a hard time when I was in front of a JUG too.) Regardless of the quality of the speaker, I gain something just by watching the presentation--he points out interesting technologies and usually has a list of resources at the end that I can use for further research.

I think Michael Yuan would be a great speaker at a JUG, as he seems to have a masterful understanding of Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME). However, the true value of his book, Enterprise J2ME, was in its introduction of new ideas and concepts, and the extensive resource listings. This book is a survey of the current state of the art in mobile java technology. Whatever your topic is, except for gaming development, you'll find some coverage here. Securing information on the device or network, XML parsing strategies, messaging architectures, and data synchronization issues are all some of the topics that Yuan covers.

My favorite chapter was Chapter 7, 'End to End Best Practices.' Here, Yuan covers some of the things he's learned in developing his own enterprise applications, and offers some solutions to five issues that differ between the J2ME world and the worlds familiar to most Java developers: J2EE and J2SE. He offers capsule solutions to the issues of "limited device hardware, slow unreliable networks, pervasive devices, ubiquitous integration [and] the impatient user." Later in the book, he explores various architectures to expand on some of these capsules.

However, the strength of this book, exposing the reader to a number of different mobile technologies, is also its weakness. JUG speakers very rarely dive into a technology to the point that I feel comfortable using it without additional research; I usually have to go home, download whatever package was presented, and play with it a bit to get a real feel for its usefulness. This book was much the same. Some of the chapters, like chapters 12 and 13, where issues with databases on mobile devices (CDC devices, not CLDC devices) weren't applicable to my kind of development, but you can hardly fault Yuan for that. Some of the later chapters felt like a series of 'hello world' applications for various vendors. This is especially true of chapter 12, and also of chapter 20, which is a collection of recipes for encryption on the device.

Additionally, I feel like some of the points he raised in Chapter 7 are never fully dealt with. An example of this is section 7.3.3, "Optimize for many devices." The project I'm on is struggling with this right now, but I had trouble finding any further advice on this important topic beyond this one paragraph section. However, these small issues don't take away from the overall usefulness of the book--if you are developing enterprise software, you'll learn enough from this book to make its purchase worthwhile.

However, I wouldn't buy the book if you're trying to learn J2ME. Yuan gives a small tutorial on basic J2ME development in Appendix A, but you really need an entire book to learn the various packages, processes and UI concerns of J2ME, whether or not you have previously programmed in Java. Additionally, if you're trying to program a standalone game, this book isn't going to have a lot to offer you, since Yuan doesn't spend a lot of time focused on UI concerns and phone compatibility issues. Some of the best practices about limited hardware may be worth reading, and if it's a networked game, however, you may gain from his discussions in Chapter 6, "Advanced HTTP Techniques." In general though, I'm not sure there's enough to make it worth a game developer's while.

I bought this book because I'm working on a networked J2ME application, and it stands alone in its discussion of the complex architectural issues that such applications face. It covers more than that, and isn't perfect, but it is well worth the money, should you be facing the kind of problems I am. Indeed, I wish I had had this book months ago, as I'm sure it would have improved the my current application.

4-0 out of 5 stars Advanced J2ME
Unlike many J2ME books that focus on CLDC/MIDP, this book also covers CDC/Personal Profile and J2ME support for high-end (32Mb+) PDA devices. I've been using IBM's pervasive tools to develop Java for PocketPC. In this book, Michael Yuan has answered questions I've had about IBM's SMF that IBM consultants could not answer.

As of December, 2003, the content in this book appears to be all up-to-date. Mobile computing is a fast changing world and having a current reference is very valuable to me.

One topic that Yuan has omitted: SWT. I develop rich GUI applications for PocketPC devices where AWT and SWT are the only two choices for UI components. I'm not a big fan of SWT, but given the choice I usually pick SWT over AWT simply because the SWT pallet is much richer than AWT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for experienced J2ME developers
Review
Michael Yuan has done a great job on writing a book that goes well beyond the basics. While the concept of developing mobile applications with Java has seen much hype over the years, the actual software has yet to hit the critical mass. Yuan goes beyond the basics to take the developer to the next level of mobile development.

The book assumes more than beginning level J2ME knowledge. If you've never dealt with J2ME, you'll need to start with a book such as Wireless J2ME Platform Programming by Vartan Piroumian. This will give you the foundation you need in order to tackle the concepts here.

The layout of the book is well done for combining both conceptual and practical knowledge. The author starts out with a brief discussion of the subject, such as why best practices are necessary when developing for a mobile platform. The end of each chapter lists a number of additional resources (both books and web sites) that provide additional information on the subject. In between those two feature is plenty of practical knowledge, along with actual code you can use to implement the type of application being discussed. If you already have the prerequisite background in J2ME development, you'll get a lot out of this book.

Summary
For those who are tasked with building J2ME software, this is a book you need to read. There is plenty of solid material, both concepts and actual code, to take you to the next level of mobile application development.

4-0 out of 5 stars Emphasis of J2ME is shifting to the server
The substance of this book bodes well for the future of J2ME. As you may known, there have been several books on J2ME published in the last year. Like "Java Development on PDAs" by Wilding-McBride. For the most part, these have been aimed at someone completely new to J2ME development. They have tended to focus on the client side, because this is more tangible and easier to explain.

Here Yuan shifts the focus to the server side. He does have screen shots of some client UIs and related code. But the bulk of the discussion moves to server related issues, like how can you sync to a database, or how to send SMS messages in a network. You can consider the book to be focused on connectivity. Not at the lowest level of network connections, but at a higher conceptual level of hooking to existing applications.

In part, this is because UI capabilities are much more limited compared to those on a full Java desktop or even a laptop. But it is mostly because the bigger value is in building logic on the server.

Sound familiar? Mainstream java traced this route from applet development in 1996 to, a few years later, J2EE/XML on the server, when people realised that is where java is best suited. In about half the time, J2ME is walking down the same path. Yuan does not suggest this, but the impression I got from the book is that in a few more years, if J2ME is running on a server that is not as resource constained as its clients, then it may be replaced by J2EE. It seems that if server side J2ME is to prosper, it may be only on very physically limited servers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toolbox for the mobile architect
"Enterprise J2ME" is a toolbox for mobile Java developers involved in developing enterprise-scale applications. A lot of focus is given on available alternatives (both general approaches and product offerings, open source and commercial) for handling the problem of spotty and low-bandwidth connectivity, and on technologies for communicating between the mobile client and enterprise systems. Furthermore, plenty of sample code is available illustrating these techniques in the form of several full-blown sample applications downloadable from the companion website.

The book has packed a lot of coverage into less than 500 pages. This inevitably means that many subjects are bypassed rather quickly, referring to sample code for details. Fortunately, Yuan has found a reasonable balance and managed to include sufficient detail in those subjects that interest me the most (networking, on-device databases, XML and web services, and security). I would say that this book is best used as a reference for a mobile application architect wondering what her choices are. On the other hand, the focus on particular products -- proprietary APIs may render some sections of the book outdated once standardization becomes reality in those areas (which Yuan explicitly and repeatedly predicts).

All in all, "Enterprise J2ME" is a comprehensive resource for enterprise Java developers having to deal with the new world of smart clients and packs a whole bunch of valuable information and tips for actual implementation. ... Read more

Vague, vague and vague. Did I mention there's few specifics in this book? Certainly not worth $80.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its helpful!
That first review, dont worry about it. This book is helpful your not going to find any prices in this book on purpose, because prices on things change so much. If thats all your concerned about than this book isnt for you. This book is extreamly helpful and lots of information on how other breweries did it. It also includes a sample business plan. This is well worth the money!

2-0 out of 5 stars Brewery Planning
This book lacked specific details on opening a small brewery. Now that I rexamine the title it states it is only a guide, and I found it to be a cursory overview at best. I wanted a book with start-up costs, equipiment costs and the like. Also costs for bulk malt and yeasts would be helful. I wanted to get a feel for costs I was not thinking about. Better coverage of state specific wholeseller/retail laws would be important. Coverage of state alcohol laws and the process of obtaining permits would be benificial. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars More than I had hoped for.
An in-depth look into what it takes to open your own brewery or brewpub. Much more than I had dreamed of, and well worth the 60-odd bucks. It is put together like a text-book, broken into the various chapters/steps in opening. Not a good book for those who want light reading about brewing. I would only recommend it to those who are in or WANT to be in the brewing business. Top Notch. ... Read more
