4-0 out of 5 stars Charming self-help guide for personal improvement.
Tom Gegax has written an easy-to-read book that covers new ground for those of us in the business world. Ever had a series of events that made you believe life might not be worth living? Read about Tom's experiences and learn from the health-sustaining and life-giving techniques he discovered in turning things around for himself, his loved ones and for his company. I wonder what kind of world we'd live in if there were more executive "coaches" at the helms of America's corporations.

Mr. Gegax is hardly alone in dealing with these kinds of struggles. But his is a unique voice in discussing and transforming life's difficulties into opportunities. A "must read" for fast pacers whose lives have suddenly encountered what appear to be too many bumps in the road. Way to go, Tom!

5-0 out of 5 stars Life changing
I was drawn to Gegax' book by the glowing enticements of Publisher's Weekly, articles in the New York Times, Fast Company, and a piece that aired on CNBC. After having the pleasure of experiencing his book I was charmed by his ideas. He has a whole new way of looking at and integrating life and work in our modern society. It is beautiful that there is discussion in the book on "Determining Your Mission". Gegax has shared his own story. After determining his life's mission, he has turned his life into one filled with love, and joy. The timing of his book coming into my awareness is perfect for me with the coming of the year 2000. I plan to implement Gegax' "Seven Take Action Steps to Manifest Your Mission" for the new year. It is comforting to know that there is a formula that can act as a quide to help me make my life more fully enriched.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid
This is an interesting book for someone who is just starting on a personal improvement plan. The best part about it is that Gegax's approach is holistic - he really has a strong understanding of the connection between the mind, body and spirit. The writing style is smooth and the book is easy to read. The concepts all make sense and he gives a clear plan for readers to follow in applying his steps. The parts I found most useful were the first two sections, on personal mission statements and action planning. After that, I found the book was at turns too simplistic and too far out there for me.

The caution I would give people in reading this book is two-fold. First, Gegax writes in a very autobiographical style. I learned more about him and his personal trials and tribulations than I wanted to; I'm the type of reader who prefers more theory and fewer examples. Secondly, as someone who has already read Stephen Covey and a host of other self-help/health authors, I found that alot of what Gegax had to say was old news to me.

This isn't a bad self help book to have. Some people will really value having a book that encompasses physical, emotional and mental health, and the connection between them, in one volume. If you don't mind the oversimplifications that can result in trying to bring such a range of material together, and you're interested in these sorts of issues, you may find the book of value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Planning your work, and working your plan
I heard Tom speak at a business conference in Santa Fe recently and found his ideas very compelling. The book focuses on how to put those ideas into action, and I view it to be an excellent guide for organizing how I think about work, family, friends, emotional & spritual health, etc. As a 48 year old CEO, I have discovered you can help an pld dog pick a new path.

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile read on the Mission Statement alone
I thought the core of the book for me was in the first 2 chapters, where the author expressed the importance of a personal mission statement, writing about his own example as well. After that, I found the book a bit repetitious.

Nevertheless, the mission statement section was a worthwhile read alone, if only to stress the importance of having one for your own personal life. Just like many corporations are starting to have a mission statement, individuals should have a life mission statement. Once this mission statement is determined and articulated, your actions and choices in life can be measured against it. Part of your journey though is to think about and determine your mission statement, a journey/process of self-determination which only you can undergo. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I bought it flowers for Secretaries Day !!
We are a small firm, and I am a licensed professional who types his own correspondence, contracts for clients, transmittals, etc.. Because the styles and forms of business letters have changed since I was in college, I decided I needed a good reference to help me with the tricky stuff that comes along occassionally.

This book did the job. Whether I need to know how to address a letter to an elected official, or pressure someone to pay an invoice, the Secretarial Handbook covers it. From punctuation to collation, this is the best single office reference I have ever used.

If you do your own administrative tasks, buy one for yourself for National Secretaries (Administrative Professionals) Day.

Due to reorganizing of our agency I found myself doing more secretarial tasks than I was accustomed to. Ordered this book and I find the answer to how to do, and the best way to do anything I need to know. Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable For International Negotiations, Too
As a consultant in International and Cross-Cultural Management, I found this book particularly valuable. That's because it not only is a great and comprehensive compendium on effective negotiating (as others already pointed out), but it also covers techniques negotiators may be less likely to find used in the US but are likely to run into when abroad. Examples are extreme openings, time pressure, large negotiation teams, and so on. This makes the book very valuable in preparing for overseas negotiation, for instance in Asia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
Charles Craver is the Leroy S. Merrifield Research Professor of Law at George Washington University (Washington, D.C.) where he teaches negotiating. Through his work at the Law School and in workshops throughout the world, Professor Craver estimates that he has taught negotiating skills to some 60,000 attorneys and businesspersons.
The Intelligent Negotiator is a book that fulfills the promise of its title. Craver provides the reader with the techniques and skills to become a true master of the craft.
Unquestionably, The Intelligent Negotiator will prove invaluable for the beginning negotiator and a solid source for refining the skills of the more experienced practitioner. Refreshingly, in a field in which so much has been written and is often unacknowledged, Craver credits and draws upon the research and findings of its authors. Additionally, although he has a preferred approach to negotiations, the author provides a fundamental negotiating skills book that does not rest upon the adoption of a singular negotiating style.
"Don't even try to adopt just one negotiating style or philosophy," Craver tells his reader in the first sentence of his work, "for there is no single approach that can effectively govern all bargaining transactions" (p.3). The intelligent negotiator, in Professor Craver's view, is a person who is comfortable working within a suite of negotiating styles. The reader who understands that premise is on the way to wisdom.
The experienced negotiator knows that no matter what the hopes, not every negotiation expands the pie. Negotiators come in all stripes and are driven by differing motives. Success in negotiations requires that its participants understand and adapt easily to the reality of functioning with an arena encompassing widely disparate styles.
Craver notes three major approaches that the intelligent negotiator must master. The first of these is the Competitive-Adversarial. This is the stuff of win/lose negotiations, the zero sum game in which the pie is presumed to be fixed and one participant wins more if the other loses more. The second he defines as the Cooperative-Problem-Solving approach. In this style, the parties seek to expand the pie through engaging in a joint creative enterprise and thereby enable the participants to realize a win/win outcome. The intelligent negotiator recognizes that this second style has inherent rewards and significant risks of exploitation depending upon the true commitments of the parties at the bargaining table to the cooperative negotiating style.
Both styles remain predominant in negotiating and Craver introduces the reader to some of the research on the effectiveness of practitioners of these two dominant negotiating styles. It is interesting research.
Craver cites a study of the negotiating styles of practicing attorneys conducted by Professor Gerald Williams of Brigham Young University some twenty years ago that may surprise many readers. According to Professor Williams' research, most practicing lawyers do not use an adversarial style in their negotiations. Two thirds of the attorneys, as viewed by their colleagues, used a cooperative approach and only twenty-five percent of the lawyers were seen as practitioners of an adversarial style of negotiations (p.10).
More importantly, peer assessment concluded that cooperative negotiators fared far better than adversarial attorneys in the negotiating arena. Fifty-nine percent of the cooperative style negotiators were viewed as effective negotiators and only a miniscule 3 percent were considered ineffective. Only 25 percent of the adversarial style negotiators were deemed effective by their peers and a staggering 33 percent were judged to be ineffective. A more recent study reported last year by Professor Andrea Kupfer Schneider, found over half of adversarial style negotiators were considered ineffective by their peers (p.10).
There is much that the negotiator can draw from these findings, not the least of which is that the intelligent negotiator must be able to adapt and operate successfully in an arena of diverse approaches. Reliance on a singular style, as Professor Craver well illustrates is a recipe for disaster.
Given this, Craver offers a third style as the best primary style for the intelligent negotiator. The Innovator approach, as the author calls his preferred style, is a hybrid of both of the preeminent negotiating approaches. Its hallmarks are beginning with principled offers, matching one's counterpart on how much and what is disclosed, relying on objective criteria and recognizing that the primary goal of the negotiator is to obtain beneficial results for themselves and secondarily for the opponent.
The core of the book, however, is far from a discourse on a singular approach, but rather the teaching of the underlying fundamental skills and techniques that every negotiator regardless of their approach requires to succeed in practicing the art. The book, therefore, is an intelligent negotiator's guide to the practice of negotiations.
Craver explores the process thoroughly and leads his reader through the tough issues confronting every negotiator with concise and well-reasoned advice. The author shows the reader the importance of setting high goals, even increasing them before negotiations begin. He gives the reader solid advice on how to construct an opening offer and coaches the negotiator on its critical impact on the psychology and course of the negotiations to follow. The reader learns how an opening offer operates as an anchor, its role in bracketing the negotiating settlement range and its use in framing the other party's perception of gain and loss in the potential agreement. If these concepts are not clear to you, they are clearly explained in Craver's work.
There is far more in this volume. You will find strategies for multiple item negotiations, techniques for handling absurd positions, some careful advice on reading body language and a host of topics that the intelligent negotiator must know. You will find it a valuable negotiating skills guide of value for any style of negotiations.
To complete his work, the author turns his attention to some of the more special types of negotiating situations that all readers encounter. You will find some insightful advice in his concluding sections on negotiating employment agreements, automobile purchases and real estate bargaining.
Highly recommended.
John Baker, Ph.D.
Editor, The Negotiator Magazine

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and well presented
This book is excellent because it is well organized and maps out the negotiation process. Instead of just giving tips about various tactics, this book gives the reader a roadmap, which makes preparation for negotiation much easier. In my opinion, this book is second only to G. Richard Shell's, "Bargaining for Advantage." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Prisma's Swedish-English Dictionary-A Great Investment
The first time I saw this book was when I decided to buy it,being that there is a great lack of useful Swedish Dictionaries published in the English language. However, when I received this dictionary it well out-did itself. Not only does it have a section on Swedish pronunciation, noun endings, and other grammatical features at the beginning, it gives numerous phrases and other helpful words associated with most every word you look up. Beware, that if you think this book is Swedish-English, English-Swedish (as I mistakingly did), you're in for a surprise. However, if you do decide to buy the complement edition to this book-the English-Swedish version-you are once again in for a treat, as it presents the same quality as this book, only for English-Swedish translations.

This really was a great investment, and I urge anyone interested in the Swedish language to pick this (as well as the companion volume) up, along with either Routledge's Comprehensive Swedish Grammar (if you're really serious), Routledge's Essential Swedish Grammar (if you're just interested or need a small review)in addition to a good Swedish course (Colloquial Swedish-with the cassettes of course-is a good beginner's course). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars a pretty good buy
I found many exercises in this book to be useful. Most of them require no props and can be adapted to any environment. I work with school and college students and have used the exercises in my workshops with good results. The games are categorised and presented very well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average
Some of the activities are very good, however, you have to really look for them. Most of them are not very good or old and too familiar. However, the presentation is very good and the book has an easy reference at the begining that you can use to pinpoint the activities that are suitable for different topics.

1-0 out of 5 stars Much less than I expected
I was very disappointed with this one. In the introduction, the author reminds us that any games or activities must be relevant to the subject. Unfortunately, I saw very few activities that I could use as-is in my workshops. They would take too much time of a two-hour workshop for little return, or seemed to have little point at all. I saw a few I could adapt to the content of my parent and/or teacher early childhood workshops.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is awful!
My organization purchased this book in hopes of finding some teambuilding exercises that could be used at a conference for 60 insurance claims professionals. What we found was A book filled with games and exercises designed for elementary school children or scouts on a camping trip. If we used any of these games/exercises, we would have had tomatoes thrown at us!

2-0 out of 5 stars Guilty of errors its authors accuses businesses of makingn
The collection of articles from 1991 to 1996 primarily focuses on differently seeing in manufacturing. They have missed a major discontinuity, and used the fatal strategy in a time of change - listening to the HRB customer's needs, the Hardware industries, with no prescience of E-commerce or Web as vehicles for innovation. Harvard B School, like Sears, had missed the change

5-0 out of 5 stars Great anthology of important ideas in strategy
John Seely Brown has done us a big favor: he weeded through the business literature, picked a few authors that really help us "see differently," found works that describe their ideas in tight little packages, and put it all in one book. JSB's own framing comments are also valuable.

Selected highlights: Brian Arthur on increasing returns, Gary Hamel's Strategy as Revolution, Morris and Ferguson on the power of platforms, Brandenburger and Nalebuff on Game Theory for strategy, sections on competitive advantage and managing innovation.

I'm having my interaction design students read this, to add to their palette of points of view. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and inspiring
This book shares inspiring lessons for people in all fields who are interested in rediscovering how to think out-of-the-box and to learn and live more completely. The real focus is on finding our sense of wonder, curiosity, and playfulness and putting them to work in our companies and organizations. The author does a simple but powerful job of presenting a set of talents we all had naturally as children and teaching us how to get them back after years of school and work have literally sucked them out of us.And, he gives clear and concrete examples of organizations that are tapping these talents successfully and great exercises to get leaders and employees at all levels started. This book has inspired me to be more creative in my job and in all other aspects of my life. This book really ROCKS!A definite winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons from the Sandbox
This is a truly inspiring book on creativity. Thank God it is not a rehash of all the other books on bringing innovation into the work world. It doesn't offer insipid phrases like, "out-of-the-box thinking," or, "doing more with less." Nor does it contain those warn out "gimmicks" like the connect the nine dots with four straight lines routine. What it does offer, is wisdom -- our own!

Dr. Gregerman's prose, metaphors, and humor inspires us to rediscover and apply our wisdom in creativity in solving our thorniest organizational challenges. He takes us through the minds and spirit of young children in helping us understand and remember how minds that are not encumbered by past experience forge new possibilities through imagination.

As I was reading Lessons from the Sandbox, I was constantly reminded of the importance of (unencumbered) imagination, a critical rule for Albert Einstein. Einstein wrote, "Imagination is more important than knowledge. To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination." In Dr. Gregerman's mind, adults have created "boxes" through the filters they have acquired through both experience and their current surroundings. Children are not encumbered with these filters, and thus we can learn from their outlook on how the world works. It has been said that children enter schools as question marks and wonder, and leave as periods and right answer machines. Lessons from the Sandbox clearly underscore this insight.

Dr. Gregerman has organized his book using thirteen "gifts" of childhood to re-ignite the creative sprit for people in the business world. These lessons range from the gifts of focus, urgency, wonder, questioning, and participation.

I have read many business books on creativity, and none have sparked my imagination as Lessons from the Sandbox. It has brought me laughter, recaptured the lessons I learned from my own childhood, and I have profited from the ideas I have already generated as a result of this gem of a book. - Bob Bookman, President, Team Productivity Programs, Inc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost your creativity? You will find it here!
Alan Gregerman has struck a forgotten place, way back in childhood, whenwe used to have a lot of fun with whatever we did. In his book, Lessonsform the Sandbox, he reminds us of what is important in life and work;tapping into our least used resource, our creative mind. He also reminds usthat, tragically, we begin to loose our creativity when we are very young, bombarded with structure and other peoples ideas of what is important, likefollowing all the rules . What can companies learn from the heads of smallchildren?Plenty!Lessons from the Sandbox is a wonderful ride throughthe new world of business and an absolute gold mine of fresh ideas andstraightforward wisdom about what it takes to create a greater sense ofenergy and excitement for customers, employees, and partners. This is oneof the few business books I've read that not only challenges you to usemore of your brain, but delivers practical guidance for improving theperformance of your people and your balance sheet.Pick any chapter and beprepared to laugh, smile, dream a little, and even re-live your ownchildhood. Then roll up your sleeves and get to work putting his greatideas to the test.Want to learn how to focus, come up with better ideas, asking the right questions, or be more enthusiastic? It's all here andimpossible to put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lesson for Everyone
This book takes a refreshing look at life, redefining the mundaneness of business-as-usual. Many of us have forgotten the power of imagination and curiosity we have as children. This book helps working adults usesimplicity as a starting point in their own work. Not only is it okay toask simple questions such as "how?" or "why?", buthealthy. The overlap between parenthood and business inspiresrejuvenating energy if we take the time to look at the gifts of childhoodas Dr. Gregerman does.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful primer
Alan Gregerman has a wonderful way of reminding us of the valuable lessons we learned long ago. With clear words and poignant examples, he underscores how we can draw on our early hertage of wonder, enthusiasm, participation, and other traits to be more successful --- and happier ---in business and our personal lives.Lessons from the Sandbox is well worththe read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent instructional reference
Loud and Clear is an outstanding resource for producing an effective presentation. The emphasis on audience analysis, which is so often overlooked, is excellent and will lead you to focus on the things that matter for your presentation. I especially liked the exercises suggested by the authors. Do them; you will learn more about your style of communication and your ability to connect with audiences than you had ever imagined. This book is probably most effective for newer presenters who need a foundation in the building blocks of assembling an effective presentation. But, it will also be instructional and valuable to check the effectiveness of more experienced presenters. Overall Loud and Clear is a concise, well-written recipe for effective presentations ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening - Empowering!
I found this book to be extremely powerful in it's message. It's no-nonsense approach goes straight to the heart of the matter. He tells it like it is, keeping within the confines of the spiritual laws that govern our lives. This is a golden nugget I am passing on to others, hoping it's as helpful to them as it was to me. If after reading this book you find you don't like it (it made you feel uncomfortable in some way?) then perhaps it's because it's message has stirred up some residue that needs to be dealt with. This book's message is about changing and streamlining the most precious commodity we have - our own lives! It's about taking stock of what we're doing and how we're doing it and why, then showing you how to stop doing what's not working and get on with life. I was definitely blessed by reading this book. Thank you, TD Jakes. (I would love to do a Spanish translation for my Spanish speaking friends in South America who can't read English.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Written with the wisdom of King Solomon
This book is absolutely excellent! It is the best book, next to the Bible, that I have ever read. Bishop Jakes honestly wrote this book like he was King Solomon. It is filled with wisdom- both practical and spiritual. If you love wisdom like I do, you will love this book. I wish I could pour this book on everyone that I come in contact with. I have a two-year old and a three-year old, and I am going to require that they read it when they get older, not only because I am homeschooling them, but because I want them to be as informed about life as possible. Its content reveals truth that is applicable to every facet of life. It talks about relationships/associations, making wise decisions, knowing yourself... It is a book for people of purpose. Don't just take my word for it; read it for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars MAXIMIZE THE MOMENT
ON THE SHELF NEXT TO THE BIBLE. EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK. IT'S GREAT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerfully Motivational!
This excellent book stirs one on to productive activity for God. The issue address is that of the quality of one's life. Jakes writes, "...the question isn't how long we live but how well we live. What matters are the moments we live life to the fullest." That theme is eloquently explored throughout the remainder of the book. Essentially maintaining a high level of quality in life relates to making the right choices consistently. "Choosing which to respond to and which to ignore help you to maximize your life," Jakes points out.

Adequately eliminating some things is one wise decision that can be made. We're encouraged to cut off things that aren't working in our lives. Like other writers in this genre, the author believes God created each of us uniquely for specific purposes to be accomplished in our lives during our time on earth.

A creative discussion of desire is developed. He equates it with intensity or passion, noting "intensity focuses on how badly we want it while objectives focus on the specificity of what we want." He couples relationship development with passion for goal attainment and advises not to partner with people who lack passion for the vision. Diversity in relationships add depth that would otherwise be missing. Healthy relationships result when strengths are exchanged he tells us.

His section on the necessity of rest is particularly refreshing. Not only is it essential to proper health, but it enables one to enjoy the journey.

This wonderful book is so full, so rich, so delightful that a review can't capture the fullness of the inspiration it brings. This is the type of reading successful people do. I had heard the author speak on TV on several occasions. In reading this book I saw a depth to him that oral delivery can't portray. He writes in such a way that you KNOW he's a reader. Buy this book! You'll have a richer life if you apply its teachings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Start
I must say I not only enjoyed reading this book, but I learned a lot, as well. Bishop Jakes takes you for a journey within yourself and your life to help you get the most out of every moment. His practical and doable advice on decision making, maximizing relationships, letting go of past hurts, and so much more can be a service to anyone. If you want to make a change in your life, but don't know where to start, pick up this book. ... Read more

Book Description

On-the-Job Training (OJT) is the single most used training method in organizations today. But it is also the most misused—because very few of those doing OJT are ever trained how to do it. In Hands-On Training, Gary Sisson draws on thirty-five years of training experience to lay out a simple, systematic approach to OJT that can be understood and applied by anyone in any organization—managers, line or staff supervisors, employees, and both internal and external human resource and training professionals. Using the acronym "HOT POPPER" to help readers remember the parts of the process, Hands-On Training outlines six easy steps:o P—Prepare for training o O—Open the session o P—Present the subject o P—Practice the skills o E—Evaluate the performance o R—Review the subject Each of the steps includes techniques that allow the trainer to apply the system to virtually any job or skill. Hands-On Training presents a universal training method that needs little, if any, modification to fit different jobs. Its emphasis on structured OJT—one of the few types of training that is theoretically sound and at the same time may be fully integrated into the workplace—makes it ideal for training people in applied skills, such as manual or sensory skills, procedure following, and problem solving.Truly low-cost and high-return, Hands-On Training is perfect in low-budget situations where an organization lacks funds to develop a more formalized training system. It requires very few resources and doesn’t require special developmental efforts. ... Read more
