5-0 out of 5 stars A REAL SALES BIBLE
Selling Made Simple is a MUST read (and re-read) for all serious sales people (new and old). As a salesman of 18 years I can say with confidence that Steven Sullivan's book hits on all 8 cylinders. Like the great teacher Steven Sullivan is, he breaks down each of the steps of selling into its simplest form allowing the reader to quickly digest the neccessary skills (which we all can learn) and build upon. The other key he stresses which seems obvious (but most salespeople don't do)is to actively listen to our prospects and customers. WOW!! Seems simple enough right? But how many times have we all come across salespeople who only focus on what they want to sell us vs. what we want and need? Many a salesperson could use a copy of this book. Great Salespeople never stop trying to learn how to improve and if thier is one thing that this book will do for you (if you take the time) is allow you to analyze your strengths and weakness' and develop an systematic approach to continual improvement. Finally, he stresses the importance of under promising and over performing for our customers. That does not mean we should all underachieve. All the GREAT ones learn this and outsell thier competitors by never promising something that can't deliver and furthermore something which is in excess of what the customer expected. The fundamentals Steve talks about in his book really are simple. It's having the discipline to do them everday that seperates Outstanding Sales people from Average salespeople. So take the first step and buy the book. Then read it again at least once a month for a year. Practice makes PERFECT! Repetition is a salespersons best friend....... See you at the TOP!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars What?!?!?!
QUOTE:
-------------------------------------------------------------
"Reviewer: A reader from Seoul Korea
I am a sales trainer and consultant and most of my clients are big multi-national corporations. I believe this is one of the worst sales know-how books I have read in a long time. There is no coherant sales processes or concepts in this book. Just whole bunch of war stories and random tips. The content was so disorganized, I stopped reading it about half-way through."

-------------------------------------------------------------

How absurd!!! I can understand why this individual wouldn't want to remain anonyms. I have been involved in business deals / Selling cycles with Korean professionals and I will concede that their way of doing business is different. That may be as to why he can't comprehend Steve's methods but I will say this...

I had a very productive relationship with those said Korean professionals and I "operate" with the mindset that Steve talks about in his book(s) so the proof is in the pudding... It works!

Additionally: He spelled coherent wrong which is somewhat apropos, I think...

5-0 out of 5 stars Rangers Lead The Way!
I've read more than one of Steve's books (to say the least) and for real good reason. He has take a tried an true method of leadership, work ethic and just plain "Get'n it done" attitude that Rangers have perfected over the a course of time that is longer than the existence of this country and applied it to the world of sales. The US Army Rangers have streamlined their tactics to an almost automatic perfection. Steve has become incredibly successful by implemented this tried and true method to the sales profession. His willingness to share this with others is incredible! I feel energized every time I read his work. (Yes, I've read some his books more than once!) You really have to read his work, it's written in form that all may be able to grasp it. I've read many, many books in this filed and most of them have a similar message. What Steve has done is not only has he brought a new message to the table but he has put his message in a text that truly ANYONE can embrace. I STRONGLY recommend this book to everyone.

He is proof to the US Army Rangers Motto:

RANGERS LEAD THE WAY!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Sales Book I Keep On My Desk!
Steve Sullivans book Selling Made Simple is quite simply the best book on selling I have ever read. I have a Four Year Marketing/Communications Degree and have been in sales and sales management for fourteen years. I earn my living every month by following the golden rule and positively accelerating my customers. (Read the book you will understand)!

I have read many books and none have so clearly and simply gotten to the heart of what it takes to succeed in selling.

Selling Made Simple is easy to read and not a chore as some books on the subject are. It is written for real people not college courses and if you understand that meeting a customers needs just gets you on the playing field you are ready to excel in selling by reading this book. It's the one book I hope no one I compete against reads!

Everyone sells even if their job is not selling and I recommend
that this book is useful for anyone who has to convince anyone their course of action is best.

What really makes this book shine is that it tells the truth that to succeed long term you better care about your customers. (and not mimic the ethics of some recent CEO's). Steve's book should be handed out to every business student. It would raise the value of their degree at least 100%!

Steve Sullivan is a former Airborne Ranger (My second choice in professions but sales managers sleep more and get shot at less),
an Entrepreneurial Success, a Salesman, and a Teacher.

If you want to sell read this book it's that simple. Then have the faith to stand up and do whats right. Your customers will see
the difference.

I just have to say to Steve sullivan thank you for making it easier to get up and do my job each day and for reminding me why I'm here!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply said, It Makes $ense!
I am a business consultant who has spent many years in the selling process.I have read tons of books on the subject and most of them say the same things.None of them taught me anything about motivational acceleration.I've been employing Mr. Sullivan teachings since then and our clients appreciate our thoughtfulness.More importantly, they reward us for it.Everyone of the Arromand, Inc family will be recieve a copy of this book and you should to. ... Book Description

Competitiveness becomes a growing concern for developing countries as they liberalize their economies and open up to global trade, investment and technology flows. They fear that liberalization by itself may not, in the presence of market and institutional deficiencies, lead to the optimal allocation of resources. In particular, it may lead to the realization of static rather than dynamic comparative advantages - a threat to sustained growth in a world of rapid technical change. This book draws together recent contributions by Sanjaya Lall - a leading authority on international investment, technology and industrial policy - on competitiveness and its major determinants. It draws upon his wide experience of competitiveness analysis in Asian and African countries and his recent work on technology and skills. It contains his most important published material as well as previously unpublished articles, and will be of interest to students, researchers and policy analysts interested in industrial development, technology and human resources. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Learn When to Push and When to Pull
This is a tremendously helpful and eminently practical book. I was especially impressed by the concept of "push-pull energy", the idea that there are two very different ways of influencing people and that you need to know when and how to use each one, or when to combine them. (Basically, push energy is assertive and pull energy is inclusive, i.e. pulling people in). It's a subtle concept but the exercises throughout the book show you how to use it to design a very sophisticated and effective influence strategy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy and practical guide to writing quickly & efficient
Very easy and practical guide to writing quickly & efficiently! I bought this book because I am tired of writing everything in longhand and I'm not a very fast typist. I am currently writing a book and am tired of getting hand cramps from so much writing. This book teaches a system of writing that is understandable & easy to learn. It has you write words the way they sound, and leaves out most of the vowels. Example: i wl cu u n - kr. Translation: I will see you in the car. I have heard bad reviews on how hard short hand is to learn because of all the symbols. Quickhand is a life saver! Buy the book. Even if you just use a few examples in writing it saves a lot of time and space when transcribing your ideas to paper. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete and easy to use
I've used this book for years, and I think it's terrific. Why? Four reasons: First, the information about grammar and usage is so mainstream, so consistent with the majority of other important references (The Chicago Manual of Style, for one). Second, it is accurate and reliable. Third, the outstanding index makes it wonderfully easy to use; you can look something up, in everyday terms, and readily find a reference. Fourth, the rules are short and the examples clear; once you've found the rule you need, you can read it, grasp it, and 30 seconds later be on your way.

As a full-time trainer of writers and editors, I have used this book with everyone from grammar-challenged support staff to highly educated professional editors. With some classes, I've also used the optional worksheets (sold separately). I can't recommend Gregg highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for all writers.
I have had a current copy of The Gregg Reference Manual for over 10 years. It was a required purchase for a business correspondence course in college. It is an excellent source for any aspect of writing. It covers proper use of grammer, punctuation, spelling, editing, letter writing--you name it. Whenever I'm in doubt about ANYTHING I need to write, I use this book, and can always find the answer. The manual is very well organized into sections and numbered paragraphs. Examples are used for clarity, as well as examples of what not to do. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars All arguments stop here
I am an independent corporate trainer who teaches people to write better at work. When my students ask me for my advice about good books to guide them as they write at work, this is the reference book I recommend.

I also tell them several other things about the book. First, this is not just some handbook that secretaries can use to look up how to format a letter. It is an authoritative reference for all aspects of writing English. It should be next to the dictionary and thesaurus on the shelf of everyone who needs to write at work, from clerks to executives. Second, if your boss or anyone else argues with you about any rule of writing, you only have to point to the relevant entry in this book. All arguments stop there. Third, the size of the book is deceptive. It uses small font and thin paper. With normal font and paper, it would be the size of two or three large dictionaries. That's how much useful stuff is packed in this book.

It takes a while to get used to how the information in the book is formatted, but it is well worth the effort. All entries in the index include page numbers as well as topic numbers, which they call "rules." The book is logically structured around these rules, and it makes related topics easy to find.

I rated this book 5 stars because I think it is superior in all categories for a reference book: comprehensive content, abundant examples, thorough index, authoritative author, and reasonable price.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good everyday reference tool, but...
This manual is a great tool with easy to locate information and a wealth of information; it is not, however, the end-all of writing. It is a good business writing manual, but to an English student and editor, it falls rather short. For example, Sabin's advice on generic pronouns and gender may suit a business proposal with "his or hers" and "he or she" littering the page, but in the humanities, this is becoming less and less acceptable. Items such as this seem unimportant only until you need them.

The GRM is a fine grammar manual if needed only for occasional use casually and in business situations, but for intense scrutiny, it wouldn't be my first choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best!
This manual is absolutely the best reference for writing. It is incredibly easy to find needed information, which ranks it above other, more scholarly manuals of style. I have used one version or another of this manual for years now, and it still comes through when I need it. ... Read more

If the title of this book sounds about as silly as a headline from Mademoiselle or Cosmopolitan, rest assured: author Gretchen Craft Rubin has highbrow credentials. An adjunct professor at Yale University and former editor in chief of The Yale Law Journal, she was also a clerk for the U.S. Supreme Court under Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and served as counsel to Federal Communications Commission chairman Reed Hundt. The book's references are highbrow, too, with Rubin quoting and alluding to everyone from Machiavelli and Sun Tzu to Plutarch, Shakespeare, and Edith Wharton.

That said, the book is still rather, well, silly, albeit more fun and dishy than the average book on getting ahead. It's sort of what you'd expect if People magazine or US Weekly were to put out career guides. Here we learn all sorts of traits that mark the powerful (Ronald Reagan reinstated much of the pomp of the presidency after it was clear the public hadn't gone for President Carter's "common man" approach); the rich (Christina Onassis had her 10-seater airplane fly between France and New York once a week to ship her 100 bottles of Diet Coke, which wasn't available in France); the very famous (Madonna's bodyguards forbad the staff of a hotel where she was staying to speak her name, talk to, or so much as directly look at her); and the sexy (Marilyn Monroe was reputed to have cut a quarter-inch off the heel of one shoe to achieve her legendary "wiggling" walk).

Unfortunately, the book is more effective in relating these anecdotes--what people have done once they've achieved power, wealth, fame, or sexiness (which, of course, involves varying amounts of the prior three characteristics, depending on whom one is trying to attract), or what we, humble readers, might do ourselves once we arrive--than it is in telling us how to get there ourselves. It's a bit like a title it even mentions once, the early 1980s hit The Official Preppy Handbook. That little item also purported to be a how-to, but its delineation of a clearly inbred, elitist lifestyle was meant to be laughed at as much as it was to be taken seriously. Not that you won't learn anything here--far from it: Power Money Fame Sex is astute on every page. It's simply that the thing appears designed to entertain more than to actually edify poor slobs like the rest of us. --Timothy Murphy ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars HUMOROUS BOOK - tons of fun to read
I bought this book after stumbling across it in the sociology section at Borders. I flipped through it and found some humorous and insightful comments and decided to buy it to lighten up my reading, as I primarily read Peter Drucker, other management books and some philosophy. I thought the book would be some light-hearted humor and I wasn't disappointed!

The author, Gretchen Craft Rubin, is an extremely witty woman. While her background is law the book has tons of comments from famous historical figures such as Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, Plutarch, Shakespeare, and Edith Wharton.

The book is segmented, as expected, into the 4 sections described in the title (POWER MONEY FAME SEX).

Each section provides some unique insight into human behavior, some examples in recent history and tons of witty comments from historical figures

Here are just some of the examples but, just so you know, the book is not in quotation form.

"People believe, and research proves, that high-status men attract more women easily than low-status men."

"The sex that accompanies your success is a nice perk for all your hard work - a pleasant, convenient way to demonstrate the status you've achieved."

"They envy the pleasures they imagine you've won. Perception drives reality, and your status swells accordingly. "

Playboy Donald Trump "When we walk into a restaurant, I watch grown men weep." He was watching other men's reaction to his date, not his date herself.

Jack Kennedy reported "once I get a woman, I'm not interested in carrying on, for the most part." He was pursuing conquests, not relationships.

LBJ "Goddamn it, I had more women by accident than he ever had by design." - he maintained a nookie room" in the capital for his illicit liaisons

"The more money, fame and power you have the more easily you can have casual sex."

Anyways, I can go on and on about the book but I will not. BUY THE BOOK, enjoy it as it is fairly easy reading and, at 270 pages well worth the price of the insights and humor delivered.

2-0 out of 5 stars sad, cold, without a soul
I found this book very cold: maybe that was exactly the desired effect, very much a la Machiavelli.
The seemingly infinite list of tricks and tactics to acquire fame, power, money and sex left me with a bitter aftertaste: I was probably expecting something different from this book, something a little deeper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Weird but true
Parody or self-help book? Well, B&N believes the latter: they really do have it shelved in the "self-improvement" section. Maybe the library scientists working there know more than I do. Regardless, the author is an extremely polished writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulously in Your Face
Gretchen writes with a wonderful "in your face style" that I found refreshing. The title of the book is not only an author's "Keyword Dream" but the book answers the how to questions implied in each of those words. This is not fluff reading. If you are easily offended by the way the world really is out there, read another book. If you want to see life in the fast lane, here it is. This book is a winner. Kevin Hogan, ...

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Bob Rubin Feel Frottaged?
This book's exploration of power and money is pretty derivative. What makes it interesting is the author's insight regarding our society's obssession with fame and sex, and how these can be exploited to amplify the effects of power and money. This is new ground, and poses good questions. However, given the author's background, this novelty wears thin quickly as the reader realizes that this is meant as much as a work in earnest as a satire. We must assume that the primary purpose of this book is to stimulate controversy - and therefore fame - for the author. In order for this to be acceptable from a Yale Law Review editor-in-chief, we are asked to have a sense of humor. But doesn't it seem wasteful that this is the best use of a very talented person's time? One wonders whether father-in-law Bob Rubin feels frottaged. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Project Management by Nancy Mingus
This is a well written, very thorough book on an important topic. Project management can be dry (as my students will attest), but the clear writing, numerous examples, various kinds of sidebars, and case studies, make it interesting. The sidebars include FYI's, "Just a minute" advice, cautions, time savers, and "go to" cross references. The book is well organized, carefully covering the basics then moving through starting a project, developing, executing, controlling, and closing it out. It includes chapters on project management software, and she even includes a section on celebrating the end of a project with pizza and wings. Talk about being thorough!
The book was written primarily for self-education (the title is "Teach Yourself" ...), but it would serve equally well as the textbook in a project management course, or as a supplement in a systems analysis course.
Personally, I do not care for the "24 hour" idea, with the topics indicated by Hour 1, Hour 2, etc., but that artifact can be ignored. ... Read more

Management models - love them or hate them, they're at the heart of management thinking and practice. They have two main purposes: to provide a framework for improving business performance; and to confuse the uninitiated with buzzwords and acronyms.

Key Management Models takes the reader through each of the essential management tools in a clear, structured and practical way. It provides comprehensive coverage of the main tools, and of the models developed by the Gods of management thinking: Belbin, Handy, Kotter and Mintzberg.

    Book Description

Research has proven that technical skills, professional training, and knowledge account for only fifteen percent of the reason a person acquires a job and succeeds in it. Eighty-five percent of the reason someone gets a job, keeps it, and moves ahead depends on people skills-the ability to deal with others effectively. In Top Performance, Zig Ziglar tells readers how to get the most out of themselves and others by developing people management skills. He reveals the qualities of good leadership-knowing how to channel people's energies and stimulate their desire to excel. In this essential guide, Ziglar also identifies the key factors to effective people management, provides specific solutions for overcoming and correcting poor management practices, and shares tried-and-true applications of people management principles that help readers move theory into the "real world" of everyday life. Rich with anecdotes and vivid illustrations, Top Performance provides specialized instruction for improving relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates. It is thoroughly revised from the original 1986 publication and includes updated stories and case studies for today's readers who want to achieve maximum effectiveness in any profession. ... This book reminds me of my most important asset; the people on my team. In the middle of the book are Management Gems. The Gems include formula for Top Managers, Leadership Myths, as well as steps for performance oriented mangagement. These Gems are must reads daily. Thanks for making something so tough, easier to apply.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Zig's fault
Ziglar's audio tapes are typically great; real fine work. This one however should be avoided for two reasons though. One, at least half of the info is already presented on one of his other audio books. Two, the manufacturer did a horrible job with the editing of the tape. This is the first Ziglar tape I've seen that is badly edited. It seems to be a cut and splice job from about 6 or 7 different seminars put into one and the volume needs to be readjusted for each different splice. It is painful and disappointing to listen to. Avoid this lemon and go with one of his other audio tapes.
