Book Description

This is the first comprehensive introduction to the concepts, theories, and applications of pricing and revenue optimization. From the initial success of "yield management" in the commercial airline industry down to more recent successes of markdown management and dynamic pricing, the application of mathematical analysis to optimize pricing has become increasingly important across many different industries. But, since pricing and revenue optimization has involved the use of sophisticated mathematical techniques, the topic has remained largely inaccessible to students and the typical manager.

With methods proven in the MBA courses taught by the author at Columbia and Stanford Business Schools, this book presents the basic concepts of pricing and revenue optimization in a form accessible to MBA students, MS students, and advanced undergraduates. In addition, managers will find the practical approach to the issue of pricing and revene optimization invaluable. ... Book Description

Over the past thirty-five years, a tremendous body of boththeoretical and empirical research has been established on the`science of transportation'. The Handbook of TransportationScience has collected and synthesized this research into asystematic treatment of this field covering its fundamental concepts, methods, and principles. The purpose of this handbook is to definetransportation as a scientific discipline that transcendstransportation technology and methods. Whether by car, truck, airplane- or by a mode of transportation that has not yet beenconceived - transportation obeys fundamental properties. Thescience of transportation defines these properties, and demonstrateshow our knowledge of one mode of transportation can be used to explainthe behavior of another. Transportation scientists are motivated by the desire to explainspatial interactions that result in movement of people or objects fromplace to place. Its methodologies draw from physics, operationsresearch, probability and control theory. It is fundamentally aquantitative discipline, relying on mathematical models andoptimization algorithms to explain the phenomena of transportation. The fourteen chapters in the handbook are written by the leadingresearchers in transportation science in an effort to define andcategorize for the first time the scientific nature and state of theart of the field. As such, it is directed to the broader researchcommunity, transportation practitioners, and future transportationscientists. ... Read more

Book Description

Discrete-event simulation consists of a collection of techniques that when applied to a discrete-event dynamical system, generates sequences called sample paths that characterize its behavior. The collection includes modeling concepts for abstracting the essential features of a system, using specially designed software for converting these relationships into computer executable code capable of generating the requisite sample-path data; outlining procedures for converting these data into estimates of systems performances; and then illustrating methods for assessing how well these estimates approximate true, but unknown system behavior. This book is intended for upper level undergraduate and graduate students in operations research and management science, mathematics, industrial engineering, computer science, and business and features extensive exercises throughout. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must have reference!
This handbook consists of 10 contributed chapters from various leaders in the field of stochastic programming. The first eight chapters are on fundamental theoretical aspects of stochastic programming, including modeling paradigms, decomposition algorithms, stability issues, andsampling approximations. In depth coverage of linear and integer recourse models as well as chance-constrained models is provided. The final two chapters are on applications of stochastic programming in the transportation and energy sectors.

Stochastic programming is a rapidly evolving field, and this handbook serves as an up-to-date reference for fundamental theoretical developments. The material is accessible with graduate level background in analysis, probability and optimization. Each chapter provides a thorough description of the basic results in the corresponding area. Detailed and rigorous proofs are provided with ample intuition and references. The completeness and rigor of the material makes it particularly attractive as a graduate text book as well as a researcher's reference.

I believe this book will serve as a basic reference for stochastic programming for many years to come, and I recommend it to anyone interested in the theory of stochastic programming.

This text is developed and written for an intermediate/advanced course in Operations Management or Manufacturing Planning and Control. This course will be found in the better undergraduate programs in the MBA curriculum as an elective, or in Industrial or manufacturing engineering departments. The text will compete indirectly with MRP based books such as Vollmann et al, Fogarty/Hoffman, or McLeavey/Narasimhan in most cases because of the business emphasis, but may also appeal to Nahmias and/orHopp/Spearman adopters. The CMM text covers all aspects of modern manufacturing management with emphasis on the recent strategic approaches such as JIT and TQM and within a style and level of rigor appropriate for business students ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Actually, Just About Any Process of Production
Although the subtitle correctly suggests that this book offers "a guide to state-of-the art of manufacturing", I was surprised and pleased to discover that almost all of the material is also directly relevant to processes that do not involve manufacturing but do involve production. Of new and better ideas, for example. Also, how to refine and then integrate the best of those ideas within and throughout an organization. Although it may not have been the primary purpose of the authors, this book has wide and deep application to almost any process in need of improved cycle time, first pass yield, and on-time delivery.

Moody has carefully selected and brilliantly organized a series of essays by a diversity of experts. Her objective is quite specific: to provide many approaches to the basic question of how to compete more successfully. Each section is preceded by an overview. The book is carefully organized so that each chapter stands alone. It remains for each reader to draw correlations -- between and among individual essays -- which are most relevant to the reader's specific needs and interests. When read in its entirety, the book's presentation of manufacturing strategy proceeds from theory and analysis of company and industry through formulation of appropriate competitive strategy to the tactics required to execute that strategy." The essays are organized within five parts: Historical Perspective, The Strategic Manufacturing Planning Process, New Strategies, Management Focus, and Dynamics of Change.

Who will derive the greatest benefit from this book? Certainly, any decision-maker who is involved at any level of the manufacturing process but also, not to belabor the point, decision-makers in non-manufacturing organizations with the same objective: to compete more successfully by establishing and then sustaining constant and rigorous process] improvement. I wholly agree with Ciampa's caveats: "Don't believe that yesterday's answers will work on today's questions....Don't believe that people who have done things one way for years will change their behavior easily if at all....Don't believe you can do it all yourself....Don't believe that you can anticipate everything or that you don't need any game plan at all....Don't believe the old adage,'If it ain't broke, don't fix it!' which flies in the face of every principle of preventive maintenance." He concludes, "The wise leader is always looking for opportunities to make things better before they break. The cost of repairing a broken organization is enormous compared to the fine-tuning and constructive change required to keep it sharp." Moody and her associates are to be commended for providing, in a single volume, an abundance of valuable information in combination with wisdom of unique practicality.

Book Description

Hardbound. Supply Chain Management (SCM) has been a very visible and influential research topic in the field of operations research (OR) over the course of the last decade of the 20th century. The problems and experiences that emerged from business practices have stimulated many researchers to contribute to a deeper understanding about underlying phenomena and causal relationships. SCM has also served as an important application area for OR methods and techniques.

This handbook contains chapters covering a broad range of SCM issues written by leading experts in the field. The work is intended for researchers, students, engineers, economists and managers involved in SCM.

After the Introduction to SCM in Chapter 1 the Volume is divided into 3 parts.

Part I deals with Supply Chain Design. In Chapter 2, the optimal location of warehouses and factories is discussed as well as some tactical problems related to pricing and integrated production, inve ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Looking beyond the factory fence
Mr. Coburn may cause you to challenge the approach that you take in understanding your business. He forces you to look from the outside inward rather than looking outward which is generally the path of least resistance. Surprise your customers and competitors are also living in this space. We will begin to see things differently from this vantage point, and that is a key part of the message in this book. Our ability to utilize the knowledge that exists in this competitive world will facilitate the improvements inside of our business. The advantage for the winners in the future will be to capture this mass of data, transform it into knowledge and/or wisdom and move this activity into one of your routine business process. Not such an easy task to create in a cost cutting world, but you can't afford "not to."

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really about technical intelligence
The title of this book is somewhat misleading. It is a concise and relatively informative discussion of technology strategy and tactics, rather than technical intelligence. It does contain a good overview of the different sources of technical intelligence, but very little useful material on intelligence analysis. A number of case briefs of are included, but they are weakened by the author's choice not to include company identities in the briefs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good writing style
I am in my first semester of an MBA program. The required text for my OR/MS class (An Introduction to Management Science, 10th ed., by Anderson, Sweeney, Williams) left something to be desired. I work with the SAS programming language, and happened to be discussing the SAS/OR product with a SAS technical support rep. He recommended this Winston text. I think it explains concepts much better than my Anderson text and has helped me a lot in my OR/MS class.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Deterministic to Stochastic
This is one of the excellent industrial engineering books. From deterministic and simple linear programming to stochastic systems such as queueing models or dynamic programming, you may read and "learn" lots of things about OR. However, for stochastic cases you will need extra help for its matematics. But if you want to learn something about industrial engineering or something related with it, that is the book you must buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for undergraduate engineering students
I have used this book for five years in my Operation Research classes. Its emphasis is in the mathematical modeling. The explanations are complete and clean. But, the exercises are the best part: a lot of examples and modeling exercises. A very good book for engineering students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great text by Dr. Winston
A wonderful compendium of Ops algorythms. It has everything from linear programming to queing theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good for beginners in OR
You might have realized that the world is viewed by some scientists as a linear space. This book will justify this believe for you. I have completed my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Statistics without a little knowledge about Optimization. Fortunately, I came across this book. This book has played a big role by creating for me a career in Operations Research. It contains many industrial problems to demonstrate the usefulness of the subject. It replaces the instructor by its good explanatory texts. With this book, you are guaranteed to have a break through in the area of Operations research. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed analysis on its distribution system
Enjoy reading this book. Using various information systems (including satellite tracking) to monitor the store performance is vital to its success. With 6875 stores in Japan and 47 stores in Hawaii, 1997 sales 1.6 billion yen ($13 million USD), 7-eleven's business is quite impressive. I was able to get hot coffee and danish, 6:30 a.m. at 7-eleven Tokyo last week, for 360 yen ($3.00 USD). McDonald, and all other stores were closed. The book would have been better if it covers its competitors, Lawson and others, in more depth. It is a useful reference book for my Global E-Commerce course, Spring 2003 semester. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars beware - old version
The newest version of Arena is 5.0 . This book teaches based on the version 3.0.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simulation (with Arena) explained
This book is a good introduction to the field of discrete event simulation and the simulation language Arena in special. The first chapter of the book about the history of simulation the generic use of it and some future use. The second chapter handles basic concepts of simulation as content of a simulation model, events and randomness. In the rest of the book the discrete event simulation language Arena is explained as a sort of tutorial, using easy to understand practical examples. Although I reckon myself as a simulation expert I still use this book regular, thanks to the appendixes in which technical stuff as probability, statistics and distributions is explained, focused on the use in Arena, but also applicable for other simulation languages.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful and practical tool for operations simulation
Arena is a powerful, user-friendly tool that is capable of handling a wide range of problems in business. I've found it particularly applicable to problems in telecommunications. Queueing theory is nice, but it seldom applies to many of our real-world problems. Simulations do, and Arena is one of the best. The text, examples, and exercises provide an interesting and information way to jump start you to productive simulations. Don't come here for sound simulation theory, though. This is for the practical user, but not for the student of operations research.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for novice, ok for concept, buy it if you use Arena
I think System Modeling should ship this book with their software (I don't know, just use Arena in school and never bought it yet). This book is self-explaination. Tutorial is great. Easy to walk-through or jump to each chapter if you want to. If you are "or" will be using Arena, get this book. You won't regret it. Don't forget to check another book of Kelton. That book will take you to more detail of what simulation is.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is very accessible to the novice in simulation.
This book when compared with others on the subject of simulation, thrusts this very powerful tool into the hands of the user. It's conversational tone provides the reader a soothing and non threathing challenge. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
Why does technology often fail to deliver promised benefits? The editors of this book propose a novel answer: More often than not, technology failings are not failures in technology at all, but are instead the result of botched interactions among individuals within organizations. Therefore, why not recruit social scientists to analyze information technology problems? That's exactly what the editors did, to our simultaneous benefit and great distress. The benefit: The book whittles down more than 150 published reports into the eight sections presented here. Each section provides an innovative look at the complex relationship between the technological and the social. And now the distress: This is a heavy read, thickly and academically written. We can't recall ever reading a business primer that requires you to have some familiarity with the likes of Foucault and Derrida plus a vague grasp of the Deconstructionist movement. We recommend this book to a selective audience that is curious about groundbreaking academic research in technology, and is up for a serious challenge of comprehension. ... Read more
