Book Description

"When can I afford to retire?"

"Will my money last long enough?"

"How can I enjoy my retirement to the fullest?"

Not long ago, retirement was simple. You'd spend thirty or forty years at the same company, get your gold watch, and collect your pension and savings bank giveaways for the duration of your years left on earth. No longer. The classic notion of retirement has been replaced with a newer, healthier concept that reflects the longer lifespans, more active lifestyles, and exciting "creative aging" options that seniors enjoy today. Along with these new choices come new responsibilities, as people in their fifties join the "sandwich generation" who must simultaneously care for their children, their parents, and themselves.

So how can you ensure that your retirement is as comfortable as possible? How can you make sure your money will last at least as long as you do? How can you, in short, be set for life?

In Set for Life, financial expert Bambi Holzer provides the answers. This practical, thoughtful book-the only guide specifically for individuals age fifty-plus-shows you how to assess your needs, manage your investments, cope with taxes and insurance, stay ahead of inflation, prepare your estate, and develop realistic financial goals, no matter what your situation or how financially savvy you are.

In plain, simple language, Set for Life walks you through the various parts of your financial life and explains how to pull them together to build a clear, achievable plan for a satisfying future. As you read through the book, you will:

  • Examine where you stand today-how much you have, how much you know, and how prepared you are
  • Explore how and where you want to live-second careers, volunteer jobs, travel, and the kind of home setting you'd prefer
  • Figure out how much it will cost you to live-understand inflation, add up your future expenses, and create a spending plan
  • Learn how to fill your retirement bucket-discover your best strategies for saving and investing, how to get the most out of Social Security and your IRA, and how to tap the equity in your home
  • Arrange your affairs-how to integrate family and finances, alternative living arrangements to consider when living at home isn't working anymore, and how to cope with change

Set for Life is more than simply a financial planning guide-because life after fifty is no longer simple. Written by a woman who helps people like you every day, this book is as full of encouragement and insight as useful information. It will help you clarify your own vision of your retirement and bring it to fruition. Most of all, it will give you confidence that you can take control of your financial life, and secure the future you hope for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for career exploration class
I first read this book about 5 years ago, drawn to it because of the appreciation of the investment prowess of the Author. I have long been a shareholder of the Templeton Funds. When I agreed to teach a class of 8th graders a "Career Exploration" class I knew this would be a 1st rate text. The class read the book over a period of weeks as we reviewed the book each class period. Each of them was then required to write a review. Each student gleaned different messages from the book. All spoke highly of it. It is my belief that it will continue to speak to them as they shape their careers and their lives. Personally, I can think of no better gift for a young adult, or for a foreward thinking adolescent, than this book

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear description of the virtuos life.
This book provides the reader with a clear description of the personal characteristics, attitudes, and behaviors that lead to a fulfilled life. Both of the authors relate these time proven principals with actual examples from Mr. Templeton's own experience in life. Area's covered include: Learning, Giving, Working, Happiness, Attitude, Investing in Life, Understanding, Loving, Humility, and other areas that lead to happiness in one's life. On a personal note, i am 28 yrs. old and am very grateful to have had the opportunity to have been exposed to this type of wisdom. This book makes a great gift, especially to those souls still searching for meaning, joy, and peace in their life on earth. ... Read more

Book Description

So what do you do with the money you've saved? When it comes to retirement savings, the message you always hear is "save, save, save." Investment advice is "grow, grow, grow." But what happens when you reach that day when it is time to write your own retirement paycheck? Where do you start? How do you turn your savings into income? Do you know which resources to tap first? In light of the recent tax law changes, how can you be tax smart about your retirement income? And where can you turn for simple, clear advice about the complex IRS rules and regulations that you must follow when withdrawing from your savings?

Most of us don't know what to do when faced with all these questions. Cracking Your Retirement Nest Egg takes the entire spectrum of advice for the period leading up to and into retirement, distills it into the 25 most important things one needs to know to begin retirement on solid financial ground, and presents the investment guidance of some of the top planners in the country.

If you are one of the millions of baby boomers hitting 50, 55, and beyond, and have to make these important decisions, you need to consult this book before cracking your retirement nest egg. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Right On Retirement
Geez, I find Tut's review inappropriate. My copy had an errata sheet with a correction for the error that is cited, which is more than I can say for some of the other books I've read on retirement. The book is readable, comprehensive and not too technical. I foundanswers to a lot of my questions. I particularly liked that I could find the information I needed without reading the whole book. Malaspina seems to know enough about her audience to have anticipated the key issues and organized them from the most basic to the most arcane. My advice: If you are within 5 years of retirement, this book should be on your "must read" list.

1-0 out of 5 stars First thing I read was wrong
I just received this book and thumbing through it read Ohapter 14 on Social Security. On page 141 she that at age 62 you lose $1 in benefits for every $2 in earnings above $11,500 - which is correct. But then she goes on to saying "You can't get around these reductions in benefits by supplementing your Social Security income with withdrawals from your other savings or retirement plans. CAPITAL GAINS, dividends, interest income, and any other withdrawals from your retirement plans or accounts count as income and you fail the test if you push past $11,500 or $30,000 regardless of source."

This seemed wrong to me so I went to the Social Security web site. The SSA says (answer ID 277): "Nonwork sources of income, such as: inheritance payments, pensions, income from investments, IRA distributions, interest, or other sources do not count as wages for the earnings test."

What other errors are there in this book? I don't trust it after 30 minutes of reading, certaintly not to help with my retirement decisions. At least I only lost the cost of the book

5-0 out of 5 stars Retirement advice you can actually understand
I stumbled across this book browsing in my local bookstore and I couldn't believe my eyes. It laid out everything you need to know to retire. It is extremely well-organized and well-written. I gave a copy to my financial advisor and told him I finally understood all the stuff he was trying to explain to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enter the maze....
This has to be one of the most boring topics in the field of financial advice. The proliferation of retirement savings plans, the maze of regulations, exceptions, and judgement calls that have to be considered by the average retiree is almost numbing. It's boring in the abstract. But it gets your attention when it's your money and future in the balance. Bascially simple rules for accumulating retirement wealth and accessing it continue to evolve like a patchwork quilt. Malaspina is relentless in her efforts to cover the topic and we are the beneficiaries. Chapter 21 treats the issue of company stock held in a retirement plan and how it can receive tax advantaged treatment. Malaspina does an even-handed job of explaining the risks and discusses whether it makes sense to take advantage of this often overlooked opportunity. Information "For Women Only" and non-spousal partners (Chapters 22,23)is dealt with briefly, but it also very useful. One important retiree misconception that does not appear in this book: Many otherwise sophisticated investors facing annual required mandatory minimum withdrawals from their IRA's at 70 1/2 don't realize that assets do not always have to be sold to comply. Many investment assets can be moved 'as they are' into a non-IRA account at market value thus avoiding unnecessary sales charges and the loss of a worthy investment. ... Read more

Book Description

A hands-on guide for the serious investor, distilling the insights of top professional money managers into easy-to-follow advice for investing in this lucrative, but high-risk, market segment. Filled with tips and strategies for investing in small caps, which have returned--as a group--an average of 20% a year since 1975 compared with around 15% for large caps. For 75 years, no investment has consistently produced higher long-term returns than stocks of small companies. They haven't done this without risk, though --for every small stock that climbs 200 percent, there are a good number that go nowhere, and the group as a whole is subject to wide price swings. How do you reap the benefits without running the risk? The best money managers know how. And in this book, they share their knowledge with you. If you do your homework, invest for the long term, and diversify, small-cap stocks will boost your returns and stabilize them by complementing the performance of other investments, such as large-cap stocks and bonds. Anyone with more than 10 years to retirement should consider small caps. Anyone with 15 or more should make them a significant part of their portfolios. Here's hands-on advice from the experts on researching small companies, finding the ones most likely to succeed, incorporating them in your portfolio, and caring for your investments. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Investing In Small-Cap Stocks
Hated the book ! The book overstates the obvious and is written on a first grade level. If you know nothing about stocks than maybe this book is for you. The book was a waste of time and money for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good pocket guide
This is a nicely organized guide geared for the beginner to intermediate level investor. It is clearly written and gives most of the more solid and less risky principles of investment. The most important contribution this book gives is that it clearly shows how to evaluate the profitability of a company in detail. Whatever kind of investor you are, if you don't know how to do this then scratch the word investing and use gambling to describe your stock market strategy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Profound and practical!
After reading "Your Money or Your Life," I was primed for delving into this book. It has changed my life! While I loved YMOYL, this book revealled practical means of achieving simplicity and happiness. The honesty of the authors was amazing in today's world of plastic-like people trying to "get ahead." Plus, the change is truly my thinking, so everyday changes will manifest as a result. In fact, I made two changes today (thanks to the book) in an effort to slow down life to make it more meaningful. However, I now need advice on how to get a "financially proficient" husband to understand simplicity when he doesn't have time to read! (He's caught in the catch-22 of the American Dream). Basically, this book makes sense and made a lasting impact on me. I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Get your life elsewhere !!!
This book is a far way from helpful. The authors have done an O.K. job in transformming their lives. But they seemed to have trouble giving the reader some ideas on how to achive it. They gave about a dozen examples of how people achive "F.I.", but no new ideas. (we've read this before when it was titled "Your Money or Your Life) Anyone who has read "YM or Y L" should consider themselves done with the subject. Blix and Heitmiller give off some sort of cockyness about the lives they lead. Maybe someday we will all get there. Thanks for listening.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book, shows that you still can have a decent life
I really enjoyed this book. It deals with two middle class people who lived a typical american lifestyle. they had high paying high stress jobs, a beautiful home and lots of toys. They decided to trade in the overconsumption lifestyle for a more fullfilling and more simple life without a paycheck and stress from employment. If you are looking for how to get by on $600 a month, this book will disappoint you (see other reviews below). The authors live on $3000/month which may seem outrageous if your current standard of living is half of that. Their lifestyle includes more than the basic necessities such as food and shelter to stay alive. They go on vacations and trips, have hobbies, own an economy car, go out for dinner occasionally, live in a normal house in a decent neighborhood, read the newspaper etc.. Their life is simplified but still includes most comforts and some luxeries of today's society. Living more simply does not mean deprivation to them, but removing clutter (especially "stuff") from their lives and focus on what they enjoy in life and have TIME. The book goes into detail on what kind of life they lead, standard of living etc. and detailed financial balance of their $3000/month budget. I would only not recommend reading this book if you plan to lead a complete bare bone life or if you are in a very low income segment. The only criticism I have is that they do not think inflation is an issue. Although that may be the case for some basic food items and electronics, I think the ever increasing healthcare premiums will skyrocket as you get older.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for breaking away from consumer culture
If you are interested in simple living, this book is a must (together with its companion volume, "Your Money Or Your Life"). It gives the personal and human side of the process of breaking away from the high-paced consumer culture. Interviews with others going through the process show how many different paths people are taking. At first I thought a quick skim through this book would be enough, but I've found myself coming back to it again and again in the last two years. The few negative reviews below don't seem to have much to do with the book, which is pleasant and unpretentious.

3-0 out of 5 stars good book but too yuppy for a poor artist like me
I loved YMOYL and hoped this book would be as good. While I did learn a few things, I wished they had spent more time talking about others and less time talking about themselves. They were typical rich yuppie types with more money and stuff than they knew what to do with. The poor things have $9,000 a year in IRA interest alone besides the number of other investments they had. Not to knock having money, but I'm a starving artist type that had never bought into the yuppie dream. I would have liked to maybe hear about someone like me or more about people with lots of debts that need ways to get out from under them. (thankfully, I have no debts). :) It just seemed like they needed two books, one for the yuppies with lots of money, who suddenly become socially aware and want to divest themselves of their things, and one book for people who are naturally frugal, or poor, or in debt. If you're in the last category, this book won't appeal to you as much. ... Read more

Don't Die Broke: How to Turn Your Retirement Savings into Lasting Income, by personal-finance writer and financial-education specialist Margaret A. Malaspina, offers a fresh take on one of today's hottest money matters by outlining ways to tap most effectively into the retirement nest egg that you're currently nurturing. While most such guides concentrate on actually amassing those future fiscal resources in the first place, Malaspina shows instead how to maximize what you're (hopefully) already building so you'll (hopefully) always have what you need. "Most people find themselves making decisions about retirement plan distributions with little guidance," she writes. "Few people understand the consequences of their choices--or, indeed, what choices they have." In clear, highly focused chapters, she offers solid suggestions for creating a lasting retirement income, lowering potential taxes, and building an estate worth passing along. --Howard Rothman ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the subtitle
The subtitle is "Taking Money out of your IRA, 401(k), or other savings plan-- and creating lasting retirement income, but there's precious little useful how-to here. There's basically one chapter (9) that deals with the details of setting up a withdrawal plan and the advice boils down to "go find an investment advisor". Most of the book is spent explaining 401ks, IRAs, workplace plans, etc.

It's my own fault, though. Next time I'll read the TOC before buying!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!
Many rules and regulations govern pension plans. The technicalities are complicated and change constantly. People can make irrevocable errors doing something as simple as moving assets from one plan to another. Margaret A. Malaspina cuts through retirement plan red tape and explains the jargon. She shows you how to get to your money after you have worked hard to save it. This book demystifies your options and clarifies the consequences of your choices. The author makes reading about taxes relatively painless. We at getAbstract recommend this book to anyone planning retirement, switching retirement plans, or withdrawing retirement funds. However, because of its discussion of United States tax law, it is not useful to those in other countries.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical, step-by-step, effective approach
In Don't Die Broke, Margaret Malaspina offers a careful, practical, step-by-step, effective approach to ensuring proper and profitable management of money. Here is a wealth of useful advice and counsel on making money last, avoiding the need to spend retirement years worrying about financial security. The reader will learn how to turn assets into income; create a monthly paycheck from savings, stocks, and other financial resources; avoid making irreversible mistakes with retirement savings; understand a company's retirement plans, individual retirement accounts (such as the new Roth IRAs); transfer wealth to heirs; and minimize taxes on retirement savings. Don't Die Broke is "must" reading for anyone seeking relief from financial stress in their retirement and eventually being able to leave something to loved ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a lifeline...highly recommend it
Like so many of my friends, my husband's and my focus has been all about reaching some magic number that would say, ok,now it's safe to retire without going broke... We gave not a thought to how we'd manage the moneyafterwards. But then we began to hear rumors ... you must do this, youcan't do that, and panic set in. Finally, after reading Ms. Malaspina'sbook, we understand what's really going on (better than we did aftertalking to our accountant!). I've given this book to friends and even acousin who was 69-1/2 and didn't have a clue about the need to startdrawing on certain retirement savings. This book should be required readingfor anyone over 50. Thanks, Bloomberg Press!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Treatise On A Very Complicated Topic
Margaret Malaspina has done an incredible service to the taxpaying world in her book. As a Certified Public Accountant, I can attest to fact that dealing with the Internal Revenue Service Code is an extremely difficultprocess. She has consistently dealt with this complicated and veryconfusing subject and de-mystified it in a way that heretofore has neverbeen done. As more and more assets of American citizens are finding theirway into retirement accounts, the timing of this book is perfect. Whatmight appear to be some type of simple election or investment decision canbackfire in terms of significant additional taxes. She attempts andsucceeds in identifying these problems and proposing appropriate solutions. I have read it thoroughly and have recommended it to my clients andfriends. ... Read more

Book Description

First-rate advice for the 115 million families who will start inheriting $10 trillion this year. The Inheritor's Handbook is a wise and practical guide-remarkable for its jargon-free solutions to sophisticated family-wealth issues and its relentless focus on the beneficiary's point of view, a view absent from most books on estate planning. This book delivers proven advice from experts and heirs, with real-life examples that dramatize dozens of problems and urgent decisions that accompany inheritances-both large and small. The Inheritor's Handbook is packed with tips on managing an inheritance, philanthropy, privacy, inheritors' support groups, and organizations that help heirs conserve wealth wisely for later generations. It will help anyone with "expectations," modest or exceptional, avoid potential pitfalls such as being unprepared for his or her own incapacity; seeing a lifetime of savings go to the government; or initiating battles that aren't worth winning-financially or emotionally. This is the one book to cover virtually every aspect of inheritance, from the potential impact of taxes to the emotional issues at stake. Includes scenarios and opening lines for approaching parents, siblings, executors, and trustees. How to minimize estate and inheritance taxes with wills, trusts, life insurance, and lesser-known planning devices. How to choose and work with (and, if necessary, challenge and fire) lawyers, therapists, accountants, insurance agents, stockbrokers, financial planners, and investment advisers. Includes: Solutions to "post-mortem estate planning" dilemmas; The rights of heirs, and etiquette on how to assert those rights effectively; How to obtain and assemble vital documents; Strategies for minimizing friction among fellow beneficiaries; Sidebars, checklists, glossary, index, resources. Dan Rottenberg has covered the subject of wealth for 25 years. Formerly executive editor of Philadelphia magazine and Chicago reporter for The Wall Street Journal, he has been an editorial page columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer since 1978. Rottenberg has written more than 300 articles for such magazines as Town & Country, Reader's Digest, The New York Times Magazine, and Forbes. 1-0 out of 5 stars Might be so basic it's not worth your time
If you're looking for solid guidance as an executer or fiduciary, go elsewhere. "How to Settle and Estate" is the better choice. The handbook gives a scant 7 pages of practical advice on what to do if/when someone close has died. Things like: Contact the funeral director, determine your parent's wishes concerning the funeral, ascertain whether your parents have already paid for their funeral, notify friends, locate the original copy of the will - - you get the idea. I was very disappointed especially given the glowing reviews provided by others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare find.
Most books on estates and trusts are simply clueless in dealing with anything except for numbers and laws, as seen from the perspective of someone setting up a trust.

This book views the subject as a set of human issues, from the perspective of a trust beneficiary.

Though there are no other books on this subject matter to compare this one with, I thought that it did the job well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good presentation of "Plus's & Negatives" of alternatives
This book is very well written and organized without being "over legal." My recently deceased Father, who was an attorney speciallizing in Estate Law, always down-played Trusts (although he set one up for himself.) From this writing, I now see why they are not for everyone. I plan to purchase a copy for each of my siblings, as our Mother ages, to keep us on the same "wavelength."

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book!
As a potential beneficiary, I found this to be a very helpful and very readable primer on estate planning, the legal issues, and the emotional fallout that can occur as a result of inheritances. The advice given is all good. The appendices and lists of other contacts are very good. I was disappointed, however, that the author did not include any discussion on: the importance of titling of assets to aid in the estate planning; and how election of beneficiaries for insurance policies, retirement accounts, trusts, and financial accounts can affect the estate plan.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for all people who may inheret someday.
This book is well-written and is split into sections for persons who may inheret, persons who's loved ones have died, and persons who have already inhereted. It discusses how to approach parents to determine what plans they have made, and what to do if they do not want to discuss their plans. It explains what a person should do in setting up "his" own estate, and discussing it with children. It lists a large number of resources (support groups, financial, philanthropic, and psychological advisors, and extensive printed materials). If you plan to leave money to anyone, or any entity, this is a good book to read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars FINANCIAL FITNESS
I listened to the audio-casette version of this book, which was short and sweet. The author who is the narrator of the book completely involves you in the management routine, that he prescribes, weather it be finances or time. The part that I like is that you have to chart down your financial and time management routines and while you are doing that you become your own critic.Author helps you with simple techniques, that you can start practising the same day with immediate gratification. The well planned excercises don't over burden you with excessive details. Another plus point is that for every problem there are multiple solutions. Authors good sense of humor made it an enjoyable experience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a systematic and logical approach for finanical pro
Mark Matson provides a systematic and logical approach for the financial professional in his audio tape series Mind over Money. He finds a way to prudently streamline the rigorous investment process while not pushing a product. Mind over Money provides good solid information and time proven techniques that allow the financial professional to do what's right for their company and MORE importantly what's right for their clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a clear useful tool not just a product being hyped.
I found Mind over Money to be a useful tool to developing my company. When I first bought it I thought it might be more hype trying to sell financial help. But clearly Mark Matson is interested in sharing the recipe he has used to develop a hughely successful financial firm. He has diagnosed methods to get on the same team as technology. Until now I always seemed to be the enemy of, and intimidated by, new technology. Now I understand how to use it to my advantage and even my profit. Its great to be a technolgoy teammate! I recommend to any veteran in the financial field to listen to this tape series. Matson points out the "cycles" (what I call the "same old rut") I was trapped in and because of listening to it I have escaped some of my old ruts and moved into more porfitable areas. Thanks Amazon.com and Mind over Money for a fresh clear look at the all to often merky and confusing financial world.
