Book Description

"Might very well be the IRS's worst nightmare . . . If there's a tax break allowed out there, it's in here."New York Daily News

Includes all the latest changes to the 2001 tax code

Publishers Weekly called it "a can't miss title." The New York Daily News praised it for "pushing the envelope" and taking "a consumerist approach that's helpful during all the other months before next April." Best of all, more than half a million people have consulted How to Pay Zero Taxes for solid guidance on paying less to the IRS.

Fully updated with all the latest tax changes, this annual guide delivers more tax-saving tips than any other guide. It outlines the easiest, most practical strategies consumers can use to lower their taxes this year, next year, and beyondby focusing on hundreds of legal ways to preserve pretax income and profit. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the average person
This book does not provide what the title indicates. Was very disappointed as I had expected this book would divulge some little known info for tax breaks. Unless you own a business or have tons and tons of money invested I would pass this by.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated
I was very disappointed to find that even though "2002" was part of the title, nothing in this book was current. I strongly recommend Taxes for Dummies. Don't waste your money on this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't answer the questions I had
I read this book at Borders Bookstore. While the book is helpful for those who fill out forms and want a general understanding of the new tax codes, it like many books of its type don't deal with the constitutional principles of taxation. Otto Skinner who wrote The Best Kept Secret is the only one I've seen who does this. So, this book is good to a certain extent, but the reader is no where closer to getting beyond the confusion about direct and indirect taxes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lack of depth
I purchased and read this book. I felt it was too full of generalizations as I was expecting more specific examples. So I next visited the IRS website to read the real stuff. Now the real pain started - I found could read most of the book(excluding the "Dick & Jane" examples) on the IRS website FOR FREE!

5-0 out of 5 stars EYEOPENING!! Packed with tax-saving wisdom
This is the second year in my life I file my taxes (it's the second year I've worked in the US), so until I read this book (actually I skimmed through it, to be honest...) I wasn't too familiarized with the many ways in which you can save money on taxes. And only skimming through it I could make a list of at least twenty items I didn't know I could deduct from my taxes.

The book is written for the nineteenth year in a row by the same author who runs a column about the topic on MoneyCentral.com, so you might know him from there, but that's not all, really. It walks you through all sorts of scenarios, from the typical individual to the business owner, so that you can profit from all possible deductions that apply to your case. In fact I realized that I could be saving a ton more money as a business-owner!!

Finally, he covers some stories about the IRS (some horror ones, in general) but also wisely goes into detail as to why things are the way they are inside the Internal Revenue Service. Even scarier than the possibility of an audit, seemed the level of prehistoric technology they are using to process tax filings... Anyway, the central point is: for the moneyit'll cost you it's worth every penny, and will pay for itself hundreds of times. Buy it! ... Read more

This treatise is a good resource for estate planning practitioners.Henkel wisely covers a very wide range of topics and provides a decent amount of planning advice. This is not a book for a layperson as the amount of estate planning knowledge taught in law school is covered in about 6 (out of 55) chapters. The rest of the treatise is advanced material.Note that Henkel updates this treatise at least annually. ... Book Description

Many years ago I heard the old cliché, “The only thing we can be assured of in this life are death and taxes”.With this bit of wisdom, I decided to become a tax consultant. If for no other reason, it appeared to offer steady employment.

I have been doing taxes for over 40 years and it seems when April 15th of each year passes, I know less about tax returns today than when I first started. Not only have the tax laws changed, but also those silly tax returns get more and more complicated.

This book is inspired by the many experiences of my clients, friends and relatives.Throughout the book, we will be telling little stories about some “screw up” experienced by poor taxpayers over the years.

I am not going to bore you with a bunch of tax laws, as I’m sure you wouldn’t understand them, (I sure don’t), and I don’t want this book to be prescribed as good sleeping material.Taxes are a very important part of our everyday life and to have good financial planning, some understanding of taxes is imperative. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Largely business valuation, with typos
Nearly half this book is devoted to valuation of businesses for divorce purposes. If you or your spouse don't own a business, you may be better off with a different guide to divorce finance and taxes. Why spend money on book you'll only use half of?

This book is clearly designed for accountants and tax attorneys. While a layperson might find some of the checklists and so on helpful, there is also a lot of verbiage about sections of the tax code, and terminology a layperson would need to look up in the glossary. (Extra star for having a glossary, though!) I think there is a limit to how much a topic like this can be "simplified" --- it is irreducibly complex.

I was dismayed to see the number of editing errors in the book, especially given the high list price. Some of them are merely annoying, such as missing words or wrong word forms that make a sentence ungrammatical. However, some errors affect the content. In one paragraph about retirement plans, the first sentence was about "defined contribution plans"; the next sentence also started with "defined contribution plans" when it should have said "defined benefit plans". Someone who didn't already know better could be led astray by this error.

My advice: be forewarned that this book is highly technical, and buy it used unless you are a divorce professional who can write off the expense.

My rating: 3 stars, plus an extra star for the glossary

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative
This book was very direct and practical. I found the easy-to-follow tools, checklists, work programs, flow charts, forms to be very helpful. This book makes me feel much more confident to help my clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Clear, Coverage
As a financial consultant with many clients who are going through or just been through a divorce, it is extremely important to have a reference book that provides complete information on all of the complex issues relating to this subject. This book does all of this and more. Not only do I intend to keep a copy in my office for reference, but I think this book provides such good information in easy to understand language that I intend to recommend it to my clients too. An excellent resource. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Rambling, confusing
I found this book confusing. I understand the subject matter is complex, but the topic was complicated by a rambling style, lack of specific examples and too many quotes from the tax code. I admit I made it through only two chapters -- then I decided I needed to look for another book to help prepare for an overseas assignment. The book needs tighter editing to eliminate repetition, a Frequently Asked Questions section and realitic scenarios. ... Read more
