Book Description

To achieve success in today's business climate you must do more than provide high quality low cost products to customers when and how they want them. Customers and suppliers require fully integrated information - throughout the supply chain or value chain. You must integrate your organization so completely that executive decisions are implemented effortlessly.Competitive pressures often cause a reduction in prices, in spite of continually rising costs. A decrease in prices paired with increased costs quickly eliminates any profitability and threatens your company's ability to survive. This book shows you how you can reduce costs through the elimination of waste caused by poor communication and coordination throughout a company as well as between the company, its suppliers, and its customers. The author explains Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in non-technical terms, describing how an ERP system can fully integrate all functions in your manufacturing organization. He demonstrates the system's capability to increase efficiency and profitability - and to delight the customer - as well as its current deficiencies. In addition to his thorough coverage of ERP, the author introduces Total Enterprise Integration (TEI), the process of integrating all the information required to fully support a manufacturing company. TEI represents a logical extension of complete information integration throughout a manufacturing enterprise and into the supply chain. This new concept shows you how the intelligent use of work flow allows responsibility to go to the most appropriate front-line decision makers while maintaining proper budgetary and operational controls. The power of TEI is in the integration of communication across the entire manufacturing company, and out through the supply chain to customers and suppliers. Enterprise Resource Planning and Beyond: Integrating Your Entire Organization focuses on what a fully integrated system can do for you.Features ... Read more

As the title sounds, the author explained very well about the integration issues that companies who are aiming to become World Class Manufacturing companies status should look into. I stongly suggest those professionals who are being involved in the ERP business to read this book. Flow chart diagrams represent the best way to describe the integration processes among functional areas. ... Read more

Book Description

When the economy was booming and dot-coms were flying high, venture capitalists were admired as impresarios of innovation. Then the market tanked, start-ups fizzled, and those same deal-makers were rebuked as predators out for a quick score. So which portrayal is accurate? Where is this much-hyped industry heading? And what will it mean for the future of innovation in the global economy?

In this definitive book, industry experts Paul Gompers and Josh Lerner provide the first cool-headed explanation of the venture capital industry and the role it plays in our economy. They underscore that, regardless of the economic conditions, innovation is incredibly difficult to finance, take to market, and translate into value. While venture capital has evolved to address these problems-the industry has fueled innovation, economic growth, and wealth creation for decades-features of the venture industry have left it vulnerable to boom-and-bust cycles. In the near future, say the authors, the industry must transform dramatically, with important implications for industry players and the entrepreneurs and organizations they serve.

Drawing from compelling research and industry "war stories," Gompers and Lerner present a series of practical frameworks for understanding the relationships among venture capital, innovation, and entrepreneurial success. They demystify how the venture capital world operates, and outline the opportunities and obstacles faced by all players in this evolving arena. They explore:

· The problems entrepreneurs encounter in securing financing, and how the venture capital model can help innovators to resolve them

· How venture capitalists can effectively pursue promising opportunities while building a sustainable franchise

· How corporations, nonprofits, and government institutions can harness the power-and avoid the pitfalls-of the venture capital model when applying it in their own sectors

Whether the industry is enjoying an incredible growth spurt or weathering an economic slowdown, readers will find this book an immensely practical guide to leveraging the venture capital model to turn innovation into value.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Legacy of Planned Barrenhood
George Grant has blown the lid off of the myth of compassion known as Planned Parenthood. They dismember babies. I am not even going to try to be eloquent-Dr. Grant has handled that quite well, thank you!

If you thought that PP was an organization in the business of helping women, you should read this book. (The footnotes themselves are a book)

If you are pro-life and already are leery of PP, you should read this book-they are much worse than you ever dreamed.

No supporter of PP can read this book with an open mind and still claim that PP is what they portray themselves to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every American should read this book.
With meticulous scholarship, Grant exposes the racist, elitist, unscientific and subversive policies of Planned Parenthood and the free ride they have received from the American government, media and academia. The details in any one chapter would be a devestating indictment, taken together they show a horrifying pattern of Orwellian activity. The chapter on abortion-related medical studies (and Planned Parenthood's suppression of them) alone has probably saved lives. This is required reading for every parent, person of color, school official and especially for anyone who works with Planned Parenthood or sees them as a benevolent or merely misguided organization. Keep in mind that this will not be light reading (a bazillion footnotes) and it will shock and anger you, but it will be an informative and eye-opening page-turner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book and a Must Read!
I read this book in three days, it was a page-turner, very informative, well researched and well written. Dr. Grant dedicated ONE chapter of the book to the founder of Planned Parenthood, but you can read more about her in: "Killer Angel: A Short Biography of Planned Parenthood's Founder, Margaret Sanger" by George Grant. Grand Illusions is factual, and I can't imagine how anyone can argue that point. All you have to do is look at the end notes. There are hundreds of them, including many of Planned Parenthood's own publications. Grand Illusions is written with a Christian worldview and understandably this will not go well with many. If you have your children in the public school system, then you need to read this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Better books on the subject exist, but not bad
I found this book very helpful in my research of the legacy of abortion, but I have found more helpful books. This book contained lots of information, but could definately have been presented with out all the flowery words and catchy phrases. I would recomend Intended Consequences by Donald Critchlow

1-0 out of 5 stars Flawed and hystetrical
In the rush to point fingers at Planned Parenthood for being influenced by the sentiment of the time in which it was trying to shape public policy, Grant resorts to emotionally laden vocabulary and fails to distingush the organization was hardly alone in it's ambiguty towards race and ethnicity prior to the civil rights movement.

While it was encouraging Blacks and Hispanics to limit their families, the organization well into the 1960's, was encouraging white middle class familes "Let us help you plan your next child" and openly infered that they wanted clients to have large families. Decriminalization of birth control and relegalization of Abortion broadened the organization's mission and the women of color health movement pioneered a multifaced class-concious lens through which to work.

Ironically, the standard of measurement blindly advocated in this book would also require public schools and accomodations to be under attack with the same venom, because they also had several policies now recognized as elitist.

Disagree with Sanger if you must, but don't run around confusing the current organization with earlier operations. ... Read more

Book Description

In an era of increased global competition, of takeovers, downsizing, restructuring, and even outright failure, managing intelligent organizational change is the most difficult challenge facing business. Kanter, Stein, and Jick present here a comprehensive overview and an authoritative model for how to and, in some cases how not to, institute change in organizations.

Building upon their "Big Three" model of change, the authors focus on internal and external forces that set events in motion; the major kinds of change that correspond to external and internal change pressures; and the principal tasks involved in managing the change process. Several "portraits" of companies undergoing different types of change, coupled with the authors' own expert analyses, prove that no one person or group can make change "happen" alone. Instead, the authors assert that it is the delicate balance among key players that makes organizational change a success.

The authors analyze the forces for change by examining Banc One, Apple Computer, and Lehman Brothers, among others, to illustrate environmental and cyclical change as businesses grow. Then they turn to forms of change, drawing on the Western-Delta merger, strategy change at Bell Atlantic, and takeover turmoil at Lucky Stores, to show how companies change their structures and cultures. The section on execution of change shows "change masters," to use Kanter's own famous term, at work at Motorola, General Electric, and other leading firms, as well as the difficulties of implementing change at General Motors and Microswitch.

Fundamental organizational change, they argue, is exemplified by identity change, involving much more than the transfer of tangible assets. Managing the feelings, fears, and hopes of people must be the central strategy during such transitions. In this essential volume for managers and analysts of change, Kanter, Stein, and Jick offer powerful insights, practical new directions for action, prospects for the future of deliberate organizational change, and advice on where to begin the change process, and when: NOW! ... Book Description

Today, the projected image of a city may play a greater role than its reality in shaping the views of visitors, investors, and, even, residents. High pressure marketing and sales techniques are frequently used to help troubled cities in their transition to post-industrial centers of tourism, culture and reinvestment. Yet for all the slick professionalism, none of this is new.
Selling Places details the successive waves ofhow places have been sold and marketed as attractive locations for resorts, residential areas, and cultural and business centers over the past 150 years. Stephen V. Ward uses original research and richly illustrated examples of promotional ads to show that the processes of promoting places started in the American West, with airy promises of fertility and prosperity, and currently continues with the staging of major spectacles including the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and Sydney in 2000.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge Economy to Care Economy: the probable future
Ian Pearson and Michael Lyons are corporate "futurists": their job is to scout technological and social trends and make sure that their companies skate to where the puck is going to be. In Business 2010 they are attempting to objectively determine what the business landscape will realistically look like through the end of this decade.

There's no blue sky sci-fi here: the predictions, whether you agree with them or not, are all hard-headed business. The authors claim 85% accuracy from their previous predictions and confidently expect the same in this book. As they say:

"...predicting technological capabilities over the next ten years is relatively straightforward. What is difficult is predicting which capabilities will be exploited and how..."

What makes the book so interesting and valuable is that the authors "show their working". Starting with a brief description of technological trends already in play, such as biomimetics, increased bandwidth, WiFi and artificial intelligence, they plot the network of interactions with social and economic trends to estimate the probable future. Business 2010 may be aimed at corporate leaders and entrepreneurs, but if Pearson and Lyons are close to correct, there won't be many people whose lives don't drastically change before the end of the decade.

We are already seeing the leading edge of some of the changes that the authors detail: the automation of most administrative and call-centre type jobs and the geographic dispersal of many knowledge workers, often to their homes. But Pearson and Lyons look further into the future and see the "de-skilling" of many professions, such as medicine, law and management. All these tasks can be done more cheaply and reliably by software. "Personal care" workers may thrive, but those of us who aren't in the tiny minority of highly sought-after creative geniuses, can expect a continuing and stressful cycle of redundancy and retraining.

Who are the institutional losers? The authors see a hollowing out of power, a movement towards purely local organizations on the one hand and global entities on the other. National governments will become increasingly irrelevant as bits flow across country borders. Corporations will also lose out to smaller "virtual companies" and "virtual co-operatives of workers", electronically created organizations with no geographically identifiable location that are quickly formed and eliminated as needed. Only mines and factories will change more slowly:

"...General Motors is more likely to survive another 20 years than Microsoft..."

Substantive debate about the future of the "jobs economy" in industrialized nations and about international governance has hardly started. Pearson and Lyons have made an excellent start towards a more thoughtful and less politicized dialog. ... Read more

Get ready, investors: the graying of America, the resurgence of Japan, global warming, and six other major trends will jar the world's stock markets in the next century. "Because the changing world continually buffets the markets, we cannot blindly throw money into stocks, into mutual funds, or into a bank account," warns leading economist Todd G. Buchholz in Market Shock. Instead, investors must be prepared to capitalize on opportunities as they unfold, says Buchholz, also the author of the bestsellerNew Ideas from Dead Economists. For instance, with the aging of baby boomers, savvy investors should begin moving into health-care and pharmaceutical stocks. And with the prospect of global warming, investors should consider insurance companies that are avoiding coverage of homes in low-lying coastal regions. The other six economic and social trends: a boom in minority populations; the biotechnology and information revolutions; China's growing importance in the global economy; a possible jump in crime; the potential failure of European unity; and the rising fees and slumping performance of mutual funds.

Buchholz begins each chapter with a futuristic gloom-and-doom scenario and a fictional news flash. Without naming particular companies, he then describes the sorts of investments likely to flourish during those events. Market Shock can help people sidestep some investing minefields and possibly profit from some major trends that could transform the world's economies. --Dan Ring ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Light Reading
The terms "Upheavals" and "Market Shock" should not be used to describe the subject matter in this book since it consists entirely of slow, gradual changes in demographics. These changes are only discussed in the most general of terms. There is not one chart or graph in this book. The lack of a timeline makes it impossible to do any serious financial planning. Most of these changes will not have a major effect on the U.S. economy until after most of us are dead and buried.

Unfortunately, the financial advice in this book is very limited, consisting mainly of common sense items, such as, "Learn to broil a trout." The useful information in each chapter can be summed up in one sentence: Chapter 1: Americans are aging. They will need health care and retirement homes. Chapter 2: Science is cool, but make sure that a lot of people will pay for it before investing. Chapter 3: Mutual fund fees are too high. (Also contains the crazy theory that all funds will collapse when people figure out they are not FDIC insured.) Chapter 4: One day, white people will be the minority in America. Chapter 5: The Japanese are getting older, too. Chapter 6: Europe needs Euro-denominated junk bonds. Chapter 7:China has a tough row to hoe. Chapter 8: The crime rate will rise. Chapter 9: There's that global warming thing.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical trivia. On the one hand, I read every page in this book. On the other hand, I don't expect to ever make a dime off of anything that I learned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can you believe, an economics page turner!
We all see the changes that are taking place around us (such as the graying of America). This book takes those changes and puts them into perspective with actionable information. I kept slapping my forehead and saying, "I know this, why didn't I see where it leads?" Buchholz makes sense out of our everyday observations and puts them into economic context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and prophetic told with humor and intelligence
A rare book on the economy that is actually interesting and fun to read. Buchholz has taken a very clever approach to making his point (with mini-novellas) that are both insightful and well researched. And humourous. Raises some serious concerns about the not too distant future that we should all be looking at as we contemplate our next investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent purchase for novice investor.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hmm
I'm an avid trader using Elliott Wave as my primary basis of market forecasting possibilities and trade off a specific Wave setup. This book is compilation of Elliott's old subscription based newsletters that teach and predict the market in his time.Commentary is by Prechter who adds some comments and clarifications at the end of each news letter. While Elliott is nearly a godlike status in my mind , I found this book is pointless for trading and learning purposes.Among the many letters and Prechter's annoying hindsight commentaries , you will find bits and pieces of the Wave based principles.I have found most of the useful information to be very basic Elliott wave, which can be found in Chapter 1 of most any modern Elliott Wave book.I also did not follow on many of the wave counts, which break many of the well known modern rules. This is understandable as EW was still in its infancy at the time of writing.Overall, this book has little or no value to a trader. ... Book Description

There are thousands of mergers every year and some estimates say that two-thirds of them either fail or fall far short of expectations. How can executives keep their merger from becoming a head-on collision? In The Human Side of M&A, Dennis Carey and Dayton Ogden argue that most failed mergers looked good on paper--they made financial and strategic sense--but the highly important human element was neglected or overlooked. In particular, corporate cultures often clash and wreck any chance that the firms will work harmoniously together. The authors, who have worked with many companies in the process of merging, draw on their unique experience to show how to address the human side of a merger, revealing pitfalls to avoid and ways to minimize risk. They describe how to assess the quality of the people to determine who are the best in both firms. They argue that the CEOs need to create a new vision for the combined firm (one that differs from the vision of the original firms). And they stress that it is vitally important to move quickly once the merger is approved so that the firms can hit the ground running on the first official day of operating as a combined company. The book concludes with a rigorous statistical appendix that analyzes some of the most successful mergers of the past ten years, validating the book's underlying theme and conclusions. The numbers of mergers vary from year to year, but the strategy of putting two firms with complementary strategic strengths together will continue into the foreseeable future. This book will help ensure the success of those ventures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for starting up an e-company
Having been through the wringer, and witnessed several friends try to do the same, I feel that this book covers the necessary steps for starting, and continuing, a successful e-company. Having a good checklist is essential, doing it with a good sense of humor is always a plus. The interviews brought the material to life where normal examples would have been boring. Nicely done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Basic How-to-get-started book
This is not one of those dry books where you are immediately lost after the first page. This is an excellent resource for beginners like myself, who are thinking about starting a dot com and don't have the foggiest idea about how to go about it. Ms. Eglash has researched the sites and subject for you, giving you a head start on the process. There is also some practical advise from real people who have been there already. I look forward to a follow-up book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book for those contemplating a dot com business.
I was looking for a book that wouldn't intimidate me. This book gave me the guidelines and structure I needed to get going on the process without overwhelming me with useless details. I found what I needed in a quick and consise manner. This book presents the basics in a user friendly way. Where else would I find interviews with such a variety of experts like Guy Kawasaki? I highly recommend this book to those of you who want to create a successful dot com business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fund that internet Idea. This is a must have!
Being in the tech industry any successful person is tempted to start their own company. I bought this book because I wanted to know what it takes to start my own Internet business. Coming up with an idea was the easy part. Selling it to people and getting it funded isn't. It's hard to know where to even start. This "How to Write a .com Business Plan" book provided exactly the information that I needed. The advice from successful entrepreneurs was especially useful. I now have a much better understanding of the process and what I need to do. If you have a good idea but don't know how to take it to the next level this book is a must have! ... Read more

Book Description

Why Decisions Fail critiques 15 infamously bad decisions that became public debacles. Including the Firestone tire recall and Quaker’s failed acquisition of Snapple, the author examines how these mistakes could have been avoided and explains how any organization’s decision-making process can be improved to prevent such failures. Author Paul Nutt began by looking at 400 decisions made by top managers involving such topics as products and services, pricing and markets, personnel policy, technology acquisition, and strategic reorganization. Analyzing how each decision was made, he determined that two out of three decisions were based on failure-prone or questionable tactics. He identifies these key errors and suggests alternatives that have proven successful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Avoid Debacles
If we can accept Microsoft's statistic that more than 74 percent of the projects undertaken by business are behind schedule or result in failure, costing more than $74 billion a year, then this book is a bargain.

Ohio State University Professor Paul C. Nutt, who has spent more than 20 years studying how decision are made, says failures can be traced to three blunders and seven traps. Avoiding the blunders and the traps they set will cut one's failure rate significantly.

The blunders to avoid:
• Failure-Prone Practices
• Premature Commitments
• Wrong-Headed Investments.

These blunders lead unsuspecting managers into seven ensnaring traps:
• Failure to Reconcile Claims
• Failure to Manage the Forces Created by a Decision
• Ambiguous Directions
• Limited Search with No Innovation
• Misuse of Evaluation
• Avoidance of Ethic Questions
• Failure to Learn.

Sounds simple; yet anyone who has participated in a project recognizes these blunders and traps. In fact, most of us could supply the author with reams of case studies to add to the ones he uses to illustrate his points.

This is a great book and should be read by project managers and corporate managers alike. Microsoft's number may seem high, but there is no doubt we participate in too many projects that spiral behind schedule and over-budget. Good decision making techniques can only help improve our results. ... Read more
